h e i g h t x // x5'10" (178 cm)

w e i g h t x // x123 lb (56 kg)

h a i r x // xKy's hair is dark, his bangs almost reaching his eyes. Depending on the lighting, his hair can either glow with a navy blue or brownish-auburn sheen. He does dye it occasionally, but definitely not very often.

e y e s x // xKyler's eyes are a deep brown, inherited from his Korean father.

o d d i t i e s x // xKy almost always wears earrings.

a p p e a r a n c e x // xSome call him handsome, but most would describe him as a true pretty-boy. Although the majority of the population can easily distinguish Kyler's gender, his features are rather soft and feminine. He is fit though, although his six-pack definitely isn't the most defined. His skin is porcelain and his build is almost dainty.

Kyler's clothing usually consists of the colors stark white, intense black, and a navy blue. He tends not to wear extremely bright colors like highlighter orange, but the color of his clothing still stands out in a crowd; the hues are far from muted. He has never been one for detailed clothing, and usually the design of his clothes are very simple.

s o c i a l x // x Kyler is a true extrovert; he has strong social skills and has never had a problem with being shy or reserved.

o b s e r v a n t x // x Ky has a tendency to pick up nearly everything; he believes that nothing is unimportant, a trait that gives him strong observational skills.

c h a r i s m a t i c x // x Ky isn't necessarily a seductive casanova or a charming businessman, but he has his own charisma which has made him popular and well-liked. Despite his lack of true empathy, Kyler gives off the feeling that he's able to relate to your problems and emotions, even if he can't.

b a s e b a l l x // x Kyler is the school's star baseball player. However, despite having the charm of a leader, he doesn't have the managements abilities, which is why a senior and the team's second-best player is the team captain, not Ky.

s h a l l o w x // x Usually, shallow is a trait reserved for people who judge others by their appearance and not their personality. For Kyler, it's a little different. He's a guy who hasn't been through much pain, and despite his friendliness and likability, Ky is lacking in emotional depth. He's like a one-dimensional fictional character; he's cheerful, he's curious, and he likes to have fun, but Kyler doesn't necessarily associate himself with the responsibilities the real world hands to him.

i m p r a c t i c a l x // x If anything, Kyler is really good and cranking out the ideas - but really bad at making them happen.

u n r e a l i s t i c x // x Kyler is a guy who has his head in the clouds and no one bothers to bring him back to the ground.

c h i l d i s h x // x Kyler isn't the most mature person you could find at school. He's rather childish and can be irresponsible.

xxxxxxxxxxxxx f e a r xx \ ˈ f i r \ x

n e e d l e s x // x In all honesty, Kyler doesn't have many deep, intense fears - most of them are the type of fear that makes your skin prickle, and Ky's fear of needles does exactly that.

p a i n x // x Sure, most people don't like pain. Kyler dreads it to the point of fear. He hasn't faced it much, in a physical, emotional, or mental sense, so it's safe to say that he doesn't have much experience with it.

f e a r x // x As Roosevelt once said, "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." Kyler doesn't think in a "fear limits you" mindset; he's just scared of being scared, which scares him (yes, it's complicated).

성 격; S E O N G - G Y E O G
xxxxxxxxxxx energetic xx amiable xx curious xx shallow x

Kyler is basically the embodiment of cheerfulness. He's incredibly energetic, which can be seen in his exuberant mannerisms and lively way of speaking. He isn't mellow in the slightest, and can seem like a bit much for some people. Kyler's lively nature can be seen as harsh, as he doesn't have a strong sense of gentleness. Ky's personality is like sunlight, but being too bright can be painful for the eyes.

Kyler doesn't have a mean bone in his body. To some, his personality can be a bit overbearing, but Ky has never been the cold or aloof type. He's quite friendly, and has been described among his sisters (privately, of course) as too nice and too trusting. Kyler would be that kid who'd welcome all the incoming new students just because. He never seems to have any ulterior motives.

Would Ky do crazy things just to satisfy his curiosity? Definitely. Kyler isn't very academically inclined, but he's a curious kid with a desire to know some of the strangest things. Ky would be on of those characters in a typical young adult novel who'd go out and try to "save the world" or do whatever the main characters do without stopping and questioning, "is this safe?" Kyler typically places his curiosity above his own wellbeing.

Ky doesn't fit the textbook definition of shallow, but you could definitely use that trait to describe him. While he doesn't judge people completely on their looks, wealth, and social status, he lacks in emotional depth. You want someone you can talk your feelings out with, someone who'll understand and be able to relate to you? On the surface, Ky might seem like the ideal person, but get to know him a bit better than just his image alone and you'll realize that he's not capable of being empathetic.

이 야 기; I Y A G I

It's safe to say that Ky has a nice life. Growing up with a loving, French mother, a kind-hearted Korean father, along with three sisters who always supported him, two older and one younger, Kyler doesn't know what it's like to suffer.

Of course, it's a good thing that his life was always happy. But Ky never learned the concept of true, emotional pain. Anything that was about to stab him in the heart, his siblings protected him from. His family wasn't rich, but Kyler was, and still is, spoiled. Not in the sense of getting everything he wanted, but in the sense of always being allowed to keep his ignorance of the world's cruelty. His eldest sister, Margaux (a French name; pronounced Margo), 7 years his senior, was always the one with power and influence over people - whether it was authority or her own peers. Anything seriously bad that happened to Kyler - or anything bad that was going to happen to Kyler - was always prevented by his big sis.

For instance, when Kyler was fourteen, almost fifteen, he got into serious trouble. Of course, he didn't know it; Margaux helped him keep his innocence. Ky had gotten his first boyfriend, and they were polar opposites - in the good way, of course. Or so Kyler had thought. His boyfriend, Dave, was tall, dark, and brooding - but he acted all sweet and kind to Ky in his own special way. Kyler thought their relationship was one of the best things that happened to him. But it was all an illusion.

Dave was a heterosexual. He had no feelings for Ky. But Dave was accused of being homosexual - or gay. Dave thought that was utterly disgusting. His father was a politician. Dave's father despised homosexuals. Dave's elder brother was bi, and was kicked out when he revealed the truth. Dave was threatened that his father was going to be told about his liking for males, however untrue the statement was. Dave was not going to let that happen.

So Dave listened to his accuser. His accuser - who happened to be his little sister, Patricia - was in deep trouble. Drug trouble. Dave was to hook up with Ky, and with a few other details, the drug business would be dumped on the innocent little boy (well, not so little).

Margaux stopped it. She sent Patricia and her brother to juvie.

Kyler's other elder sister, Vienne, was 3 years his senior. She helped too. She was clever; while the eldest Han used her influence over others to blackmail others, Vienne blackmailed her little brother's enemies by using her wit. Vienne saved Kyler so many times, and like Margaux, made sure he knew nothing about how many times his ass had to be saved by his big sisters.

Even Ky's littlest sister, Cassandra, or Cass for short, defended him from the cruelties of the world. She was four years younger than him, and currently only thirteen years old. But she was tough. While she was Kyler's little sister, both chronologically and physically - she was only 4'9" - she was supposedly a whole lot stronger than her big brother. She was the athletic one of the family, and was definitely on her way to the Olympics. She beat her big brother's rivals up - not the most ethical method, but very effective. Cass made less of an effort to hide her impact than her elder sisters.

But with all his siblings defending him constantly from the world, where would Kyler go in life? At seventeen, he's mainly oblivious, and a bouncing ball of giddiness. He never understood pain, or grief. While his sisters' efforts have kept him completely happy, they made him shallow. He doesn't understand, mainly because he doesn't know.

To the untrained eye, there was nothing particularly wrong with the world - well, besides the norm (because to be honest, there was always a problem in the world).

However, to the Aequus, and the Universe, the humans will definitely drive their entire race to extinction if they kept going at this rate.

Sure, the world had it's fair share of problems in the past. People starving. Rather feeble viruses killing thousands. But those problems were improved by science, technology. Those problems were simply little obstacles in humanity's climb to greatness. No path is ever completely smooth. The problems of the past were merely the inevitable in evolution.

Present-day problems, however, were much different. Starvation and war may have similar effects, but they are two very different things. Starvation is the lack of food, most likely humanity populating too quickly for their agriculture to catch up. War, however, is propelled solely by emotions taken to the extreme. There are many other problems in present-day Earth, and nearly all of have to do with emotions.

Therefore, the Aequus were in trouble.

Love had gotten out of hand. It was natural for one emotion to intermingle with others, but Love almost completely used the other emotions for her own. It threw the balance off for all the rest of the emotions, which was definitely not good. Happiness's process of neglecting her duties was more complex; it happened over a rather long period of time. She was mesmerized by the humans, who managed to remain free despite the Aequus controlling their emotions. Once her duty to her job had faltered, it was hard to bounce back from it. She kept neglecting her duties, slowly but surely. She had tried to go back to her previous self, when making the balance of happiness perfect came naturally to her, but it was like walking into quicksand; the deeper she went, the harder it was to come back out.

However, Sadness' situation, on the other hand, was a bit different. He committed to his duties, keeping the balance of sadness in the world intact. But as technology and science evolved on Earth, conflict did too. As World Wars kept coming and people kept dying, the overwhelming sadness in the world was enough to strain Sadness himself. He had changed, after World War II. He became insensitive, relentless, reckless. Instead of the sadness destroying him, he was destroying sadness.

If Anger walked the earth as a pure, mortal human, she would be described as...mentally disturbed, perhaps. She was a tad more unstable than the rest of the Aequus. She had become disappointed in the world's use of anger. The wars were so petty...the anger in them was wasteful. Anger was forced to start World War II by making the anger of the European countries at Hitler explode, allowing them to defend themselves. Anger didn't like that war. World domination...the cause was empty. So she helped ISIS, and it was safe to say that no one liked that.

Fear had let power overwhelm her. In humanity, fear was always powerful. Many times, fear was in control. Fear grew obsessed with that. She relished the feeling of the large doses of fear and anger flowing through the world (which Anger was not happy about), and soon enough, in her obsession, fear in the world grew out of control.

The Aequus lost their sight of their duty. All five of the major emotions have earned themselves a place among humans. Their purpose is to teach a mortal the purpose of their emotion - perhaps, they are to teach themselves as well. The Aequus have forgotten their significance.

It's time for them to remember.

Chris tapped her foot on the wooden floor of the gym. She was bored. Apparently, she was fast at changing, and everybody else was dreadfully slow. Sure, there were a few students already out of the locker rooms, but about 95% of them were still doing their thing.

Chris was supposedly lucky, since her human, Isaac O'Cassedy, was in her gym class as well. She had a chance to scope things out, making it easier for her to fix him up, and leave this damned Earth.

Nothing against Earth...but high school was dull.

Apparently, Chris had just jinxed something by thinking that. There was a commotion near the boys' locker room, as Isaac entered the gym with a trail of bullies following him, jeering at him. He made no move to defend himself.

Chris' eyes narrowed. It was disappointing how weak he was. He was over a foot taller than her, for goodness sake! Apparently, the running trend here in human high schools was that the taller, bigger dudes were more intimidating. Of course, Chris - and Zoe, also known as Fear - were exceptions. But intimidating people was kind of their jobs.

"Aw, come on Cassie," the biggest one of the boys, obviously the ringleader. He shoved the blue-eyed boy (who was actually taller than him), making him bump into a girl, who jumped, shoving Isaac off of her. The boys chortled with laughter, but the girl as obviously not pleased. She scowled, shooting both Isaac at his bullies a withering glare, stomping away to her brunette friend, who was coming out of the girls' locker room. Chris decided to speak up. Sometimes her fellow emotions thought, since she was Anger, that'd she supported bullying, but that wasn't the case. Especially since the spectacle in front of her involved very, very little anger.

"Sod off," she said, almost in a bored tone. That definitely caught the bullies' attention. Some of them recognized her, and stepped to the background. The ringleader clearly wasn't intimidated, but then again, Chris wasn't acting very intimidating.

"Are you a British bitch or what?" he scoffed, rolling his eyes. What was ironic was that Chris actually was British - well, 80% British. Anger wouldn't know too much about Brits, she specialized in anger, but her human form was mainly British. Okay, sod off is probably a British term. Good to know.

"I am British, and I am a bitch - well, more of an ass than a bitch," Chris replied smartly, although her tone was light and almost mocking in a distinct way. "But you aren't in the position to say that about me. Please, do yourself a favor and stop being a baby looking to seem tough through pushing someone around. Really, it gives you a bad rep." Chris smiled in almost a friendly manner, if it weren't for that almost creepy gleam in her eye that appeared in times like this. "Just some friendly advice. If you want to get the girl - or guy, I don't assume people's sexualities - then you should back off before your face gets really messed up. Of course, you should also back off 'cause no one likes people like you, but you get the idea. Hopefully. Explaining this stuff really ruins the effect."

The ringleader of the group glared at her. Chris smiled back at him in almost a Cheshire-grin kind of way - except without the teeth. He scowled, but backed off. Chris turned back to Isaac. "I freak people out like that all the time," she said cheerily, before turning back to the assembling group of students.

if someone makes you so angry, take a deep breath, count to ten, and kill him immediately.

"Today we are starting our self-defense unit, which we will be doing for the next few weeks..." Coach Mohammad Hase - apparently his last name was German - droned on as Chris' attention started to fade. She had ADHD. You couldn't blame her.

"You will be pairing up," the coach continued, "choose your partners wisely. As we learn new skills, we will be practice fighting against each other. And by all means, you are not to harm anybody. This is self-defense, not swordfighting."

The ringleader of Isaac's bullies - Chris learned that his name was Rui Lynch - had a certain gleam in his eye as he stared at Isaac. The coach released the class to find their partners. Of course, Chris was going to choose Isaac - she had a damn job, after all - but Chris being Chris, she couldn't resist saying something to Rui.

"Have a crush on him?" Chris mentioned mildly, referring to Rui staring at Isaac in the "oh watch your back, Cassie" kind of way. Ha. Of course Rui didn't have a crush on Isaac, but Chris just loved getting on people's nerves sometimes.

The tall dark-haired boy whipped his head around. His eyes were smoldering. Chris flashed him an almost friendly version of a predatory smile. He was getting angry. Of course, Chris was going to like that. Despite her quick temper, she was usually the one who got others angry - it was her job, after all.

"Just a piece of friendly advice," Chris dropped her voice to a semi-whisper, "don't stare at the people you're crushing on. It's fine for most people, but for you...well, it makes you look like a stalker who's the son of Godzilla." With that sentence, Chris smiled cheerily, before sauntering off in Isaac's direction.

"'Sup, O'Cassedy," she said. "We're partners. But don't be concerned, I'm good at this thing."

"Je vais vous permettre de choisir votre partenaire," Mrs. Cécile Fabron, Kyler's French teacher, spoke in her usual manner. In Mrs. Fabron's class, she would usually say everything in French, point to someone random, and expect them to translate it. Of course, this was an advanced class, so the technique had a relatively high success rate. If someone didn't get it correct, Ms. Fabron would get someone else to correct them, and teach the student what they got wrong in the translation.

The near-gaunt French teacher pointed at Desirae Toole, one of the popular students in school, to translate, a strand of mousy brown hair falling from her rather loose bun in the process. Desirae straightened up. The blonde, like Kyler, wasn't an especially good student. But like Ky, her best subject was French.

"I will allow you to choose your partner," Desirae translated. Ms. Fabron nodded sharply in approval, turning to the board. The brunette woman then explained how she wanted the partner project done; anything on French culture, from food to the military, it didn't matter. Each pair was to make a poster board on their findings, and everything had to be in French. A single thing in English, and points would be taken off.

"Votre choix de partenaire sera soit un coup de génie, soit votre chute!" Ms. Fabron shouted, slamming her ruler on the desk. Everybody jumped in their seats, and using the ruler, Ms. Fabron pointed towards Ky, making a whipping sound in the process. The student she almost whacked winced painfully.

"Um...your choice of partner will be either a stroke of genius or your fall!" Kyler translated, slightly startled by Ms. Fabron's...ruler work. The French teacher slammed her ruler on her desk once again. She leaned forward, eyes unnaturally wide, her head sticking out in Ky's direction. If this were a cartoon, Ms. Fabron's eyeballs would be popping out of her head.

"There is no 'um'!" she hissed sharply in French. "What you said was not grammatically correct!" With that, Ms. Fabron slammed her ruler on her table once again, turning around towards the whiteboard.

Yeah, she could be a bit kooky at times.

The whiteboard had a list of every single topic you could choose to do the project on - only one pair per project. "When you have successfully found a partner," Ms. Fabron finally said something in English, before switching back to French, "come to me with your topic request. French only." Ms. Fabron had drawled out the last part. "Begin!"

Kyler wasn't sure who to partner up with - despite his popularity, he wasn't especially good at academics, so people tended to avoid him. Now Ky just needed to find a partner who wouldn't reject him - or better yet, a partner who'd approach Kyler themselves.

French was the one subject Renan felt more than a little confident in. He was good with languages. Admittedly, Spanish or Japanese would have been better for him, but his human was doing French, therefore, Renan had to do French. The teacher was... more than a little eccentric, but she left Renan alone because he was good. He didn't have the same love for it as, say, algebra, but it wasn't bad. Sadness had to be universal; languages didn't matter. This project would be easy for him.

He smirked as his human- Kyler Han- was targeted by Madame Fabron. How fortunate that they had a teacher whose name sounded good in French. She snapped at him for using a filler word, which just made Renan roll his eyes. Like the French themselves never used "um." High school was a lot more fun than Renan had imagined. The teachers were colourful, individual people, which made the school day a lot more interesting. Sure, there was a hell of a lot of sadness in the students, but it was actually bearable, something that surprised Renan. Maybe he was becoming better at dealing with this.

When they were allowed to get to their feet, Renan looked over at Kyler. When the other boy wasn't moving, Renan got to his feet, sauntering over to his human. "Salut," he said smoothly, retrieving a nearby empty chair and sitting down across the table from his human. "Voulez-vous travailler avec moi?" Would you like to work with me? He watched the French teacher out of the corner of his eye. "Nous devons parler francais, non? Elle est.... fou." He added, shaking his head a little. We have to speak french, right? She's... crazy. Ms. Fabron shot a look in Renan's direction, and Renan just returned his best charming smile. "Donc, quel sujet voulez-vous faire?" He asked, turning fully to Kyler. So, what topic would you like to do?

Isaac nodded slightly towards Chris as the hazel-eyed brunette approached him. She narrowed her eyes. He was fidgeting with his shirt. Did he not want to partner up with her? Hey, Chris would be able to help his little self against Rui. But in the end, it didn't really matter if Isaac wanted to be around Chris or not. He was Chris' assigned human, and plus, Isaac's passive personality wouldn't put up much of an argument.

Oh, wait, Chris thought to herself. I'm supposed to fix that part of him.

"Hi there, Chris," Isaac muttered, the petite girl barely able to pick up his voice. At least he spoke to her. That was definitely a start. A disappointing start that made Chris want to gauge her eyeballs out, but it was a start.

Clearing his throat, Isaac added, "I, uh, took a year of Tae Kwan Do when I was seven... but as you can imagine, I'm not very good at this."

Chris was sure that she was visibly wincing. That just sounded so sad.

"No worries, Isaac," Chris said in her own twisted interpretation of a cheerful tone, reaching up and patting O'Cassedy's head. "As your partner, apparently, I'm supposed to help you learn as we struggle through this unit. Besides, Hase over there is going to give us lessons. He has to. He's the coach."

As if on cue, Coach Hase shouted, "Alright! Today, you and your partner will be training based on what you already know! We will start the actual self-defense lessons tomorrow, but today is going to consist of training simply on your previous knowledge." He paused, as if he wasn't eager to say what was next. "Today, you may also practice with other pairs, since we are not harnessing our skills on a particular technique. There is no need to stick with your partner on this one."

Chris shouted an "Oh, come on!" at the ceiling as Rui stormed over to her and Isaac, his pace quick but not rushed. It was the sort of entrance that would intimidate weak-willed individuals. Like O'Cassedy.

"Come on, Cassie," Rui almost snarled, but it wasn't quite loud enough for Coach Hase to hear the insulting nickname. "You know what's coming up." Rui cracked his knuckles for extra effect.

"Hey, hey, hey!" Chris stormed towards Rui at a similar pace as his. She jabbed her right pointer finger in his direction as he approached her. "You aren't obligated to punch O'Cassedy in the face! The only one allowed to attack him without his consent in me - 'cause I'm his partner." Rui growled quietly in apparent anger, glaring at Chris.

"Back off, shortie!" Rui snarled. "This is between me and Cassie. You? Stay out of it." Chris narrowed her eyes as she sent her infamous glare Rui's way.

"You better not bloody talk to me like that!"

"You two!" Coach Hase intercepted the coming argument. "If you have a problem, deal with it outside. Or better yet, the principal's office."

Rui and Chris ignored him. "What's your problem?" Rui shouted. "You're exactly like me, yet you choose to stick up for that pathetic little excuse of a person?" Chris seethed.

"Of course I'm not like you!" Chris snapped. "Come on, you're an idiot! Anyone who thinks they're like you has certainly been dropped on the head over ten times as a baby!"

"Mr. Lynch! Miss Beasley!" Coach Hase's voice interrupted the two's banter. "You have five seconds to end this, unless you want to go to the principal's office!" Chris was tempted to ignore the PE coach, but in the end, she wasn't here on earth to argue with Rui Lynch. She was here because apparently, teaching Isaac O'Cassedy the value of anger was supposed to also remind Anger of the significance of her role in the universe. This was an opportunity to get this back on track.

Chris took that opportunity in the strangest way. "Bye!" she said in her sing-song voice, storming back over to Isaac, who was probably unsettled by the entire spectacle. "Come on, O'Cassedy," she muttered just loudly enough for Isaac to hear. After she headed over to one of the far corners of the gym, she spun around, facing him. "You wanna learn how to kick the ass of a kid like him?" Chris waved her finger in Rui's general direction. "I can show you how to do it without laying a finger on him."

Chris crossed her arms, straightening her back as she gazed in a rather levelheaded manner up at Isaac. "Besides," she added, "it's not like I'm giving you a choice."

Ky's head jerked up as he spotted Renan Bittencourt sauntering over to him. Kyler usually didn't judge people, but what a strange surname. Despite that, the boy liked Renan - he found the older boy intriguing, in a sense.

"Salut," Renan said smoothly as he retrieved an empty chair, sitting down across from Kyler. "Voulez-vous travailler avec moi?" Would you like to work with me? Kyler translated in his mind. He smiled cheerfully. There was no reason to turn down Renan's offer.

"Bien sûr!" Kyler said. "Après tout, il n'y a aucune raison pour moi d'avoir quelque chose contre nous en un partenariat."

Renan glanced at Madame Fabron from the corner of his eye. "Nous devons parler francais, non?" he commented, before adding, "elle est...fou." Ms. Fabron shot a death glare in Renan's direction, the boy simply flashing a charming smile in return. Kyler stifled a laugh.

"Très vrai," Kyler spoke quietly enough so that his eccentric French teacher couldn't hear. "Mais hey, elle est...gentille."

"Donc, quel sujet voulez-vous faire?" Renan asked, turning to face Kyler. The boy shrugged.

"Je n'ai pas beaucoup de préférence," Ky admitted in a rather gregarious tone. "Il y a beaucoup de choix. Um...la nourriture est toujours intéressante. Peut-être des desserts? Ou si vous préférez du fromage ou du vin, l'un ou l'autre est bon." Kyler smiled cheerily at his partner.

"C'est vraiment à vous," Ky said, his amiable demeanor not shifting one bit. "Je ne suis pas le meilleur à l'école, donc le moins que je peux faire est de vous laisser choisir le sujet de notre projet."

Kyler seemed to want to do food. First of all, that sounded like it would be boring as all hell. And, more importantly, it wasn't going to provide him with any opportunities to work on his job. He had to show this kid the value of sadness. Renan may have been good with sadness, but even he couldn't make anyone upset over cheese. "Je pense que nous devrions étudier les guerres, les révolutions. Tous le monde va faire le nourriture et le vin. Que pensez-vous?" The wars and revolutions he could work with. People died. It was a lot easier to make people sad over them.

"Il y avait beaucoup de conflit dans l'histoire francais. Nous pouvons faire les guerres mondiales, ou la révolution francais... Il y a beaucoup de faire." He added. Kyler seemed pretty laid back, so Renan was confident he could convince the other boy to change his mind. "Si vous adorais faire le nourriture, nous pouvons, mais je pense que les guerres sont plus interessant, non?"

Kyler didn't seem like the worst person in the world to work with. But, in the end, he was a job. Renan wanted to get this over and done with, to just be able to go back to normality. Things had been messy since the wars, sure, but he could deal with it. If he could deal with being exiled to earth, he could surely keep his own emotions in check. And surely there was something to say about the fact that he was choosing to do a project on the very thing which had distressed him to such an extent. If it had messed him up so badly, surely it would disturb Kyler just as much.

"Thank-" Isaac cleared his throat, finally choosing to raise his voice. Chris supposed that her heroic rescue must have does something. Isaac tried again. "Thanks for that, by the way."

The blue-eyed brunette looked over his shoulder, glancing in an almost alarmed and defeated manner at the other boys in class. They were already wrestling each other, fighting like animals. Chris refrained from slamming her head against the wall. Isaac needed a shitload of help if he wanted to catch up with the others in the class. First, Chris would teach him how to not be a doormat. Then, she would teach him the prospect of anger.

That couldn't be too hard...right?

"I'm not sure I could... kick their asses like you say," Isaac mentioned.

"I didn't mean it literally," Chris interrupted. "Feel free to take it that way, though."

Isaac turned towards Chris, who set her unrelenting and stony stare on him. She knew she had the smallest human form amongst all the Aequus, but she and Fear were forces to be reckoned with. If it came down to it, Chris would literally attempt to force anger into Isaac's heart, mind, and soul. Of course, no one would be happy with that, but Anger was impatient.

"But I'll do my best," Isaac said suddenly, his voice low once again. "I'm sure anything you teach me will be better than anything Hase will say."

Chris raised an eyebrow as she looked towards the tall boy. "Thanks," she said in an almost suspicious manner - perhaps a bit awkwardly. "'Preciate it, kid."

"So, uh, what should I do first?" He asked, hoping he wasn't making a mistake, ready to be told to put his hands in a first or something.

Chris frowned. "Whoa, tiger," she interrupted. "Nuh uh. Not yet. You aren't ready for that stage." Chris took a deep breath before launching into her explanation. "Listen, kid, fighting skills alone won't help you at all. Just because you can defend yourself physically doesn't mean you'll actually be willing to do it. I can teach you how to punch and kick like a pro, but that won't necessarily give you the courage to stand up to Rui and his little followers." Chris looked Isaac in the eye. "Got that? Good."

Chris continued. "First, you need confidence. For the lack of a better term, stop being such a doormat. Before you can be able to physically defend yourself, you need to be mentally up for it too." Chris gave the guy an expectant look (which probably wasn't helping her with her task, but Chris had a peculiar soul). "If you're actually committed to braving the world as a confident and assertive person, then we can meet up after school or some other time for confidence-boosting lessons." Chris paused for a moment - she knew she was being quite upfront with this. "'Cause if you want me to be honest - which I will be regardless - to become confident and less passive...well, it's gonna take more than a couple weeks of self-defense lessons."

Chris sighed before continuing. "But...if you wanna start with the ass-kicking part, we can definitely do that," Chris stated. She never officially took any real martial arts form, but she did know what she was talking about.

"Je pense que nous devrions étudier les guerres, les révolutions," Kyler blinked, slightly surprised. The wars and revolutions were sensitive topics for some people. Then again, this was Renan Bittencourt. He could definitely take it. "Tous le monde va faire le nourriture et le vin. Que pensez-vous?"

Kyler supposed that wars and revolutions couldn't possibly be too bad...but in all honesty, they were depressing topics. Ky didn't like how uncomfortable the death count could make people. But if Renan wanted to do it, he supposed that he wouldn't really feel too bad about the effects of war.

"Il y avait beaucoup de conflit dans l'histoire francais," Renan continued. "Nous pouvons faire les guerres mondiales, ou la révolution francais... Il y a beaucoup de faire," the older boy added. Renan made a compelling case. "Si vous adorais faire le nourriture, nous pouvons," Ky's cheeks flushed slightly. It was embarrassing when Renan put it that way. "Mais je pense que les guerres sont plus interessant, non?"

Kyler thought for a moment before answering. "Bien sûr, nous pouvons étudier les guerres si vous le souhaitez!" he said brightly. "Vous avez raison, je suppose que le conflit est plus intéressant que la nourriture." Ky smiled cheerfully at his partner, getting up from his seat. "Je dirai à Madame Fabron notre choix de sujet!" Volunteering to approach Ms. Fabron about their topic choice was the nice thing to do, Kyler supposed.

The Korean boy carefully approached his brunette teacher, jumping back when she turned to him sharply. "Ah, monsieur Han," she muttered. Ky gave her a weak smile in response. Madame Fabron sighed impatiently. "Je suppose que vous êtes ici pour me dire votre choix de sujet?" She peered at Renan, who was behind Ky. "Le long de avec votre partenaire."

"Oui!" Kyler responded quickly. "Renan et moi souhaitons faire un projet sur les guerres et les révolutions françaises!"

Madame Fabron raised a thin, angled brow in genuine surprise. "Vraiment?" she muttered. "...d'accord."

Kyler cocked his head, truly confused. "Est-ce un problème?" he questioned, curious. Madame Fabron waved him off.

"Non, non," she muttered. Ky nodded slowly, retreating back to his seat, still confused.

xxx"now i wish i was alone again,

Renan smiled as Kyler agreed to the topic. Perfect. Even Kyler couldn't be immune to the affects of war and of loss of life. And sure, it wouldn't necessarily be easy for Renan. He had witnessed those wars. He had dealt with the aftermath of that much loss. But if they had that much of an affect on an Aequus, even the bubbliest of humans couldn't be immune to it. Renan watched as Kyler went up to Madame Fabron. Even the teacher seemed to be surprised, which just made Renan's smile broaden. He quickly wiped the smile off of his face as Kyler turned back around to return to his seat. He looked confused.

"Donc, comment nous commencons? Ferez-vous l'histoire? Devrions-nous aller à la bibliothèque? Je ne sais pas beaucoup de l'histoire. Ou, voulez-vous regardons un film? Il y a beaucoup de films sur les guerres mondiales. C'est peut-être un bon endroit pour commencer? Facile pour faire, non?" He asked with a smile. Movies might be a good way to start. People who didn't get particularly emotional about their own lives could sometimes get emotional about movies, for reasons that Renan couldn't quite comprehend. Surely stories about real people were more upsetting than about fabricated stories, right? But Renan didn't quite understand humanity. He wasn't entirely sure he ever would.

It said a lot when even the teacher hadn't been expecting Kyler to do such a depressing topic. It also spoke volumes about the amount of work that Renan had to do. He wasn't particularly looking forward to it either; he had never wanted to end up here, had never wanted to end up having to do this job. All he'd ever wanted was eternal peace, but that wasn't going to happen any time soon. Not with this role that had been thrust upon him like this.

"Donc, comment nous commencons?" Renan asked with a smile when Kyler came back to his seat. "Ferez-vous l'histoire? Devrions-nous aller à la bibliothèque? Je ne sais pas beaucoup de l'histoire. Ou, voulez-vous regardons un film? Il y a beaucoup de films sur les guerres mondiales. C'est peut-être un bon endroit pour commencer? Facile pour faire, non?"

Kyler took a moment to process what Renan had said - yes, he was in Advanced French, but he still didn't know the language like the back of his hand. After all, that's why he was taking the class. Kyler couldn't figure out how it came so naturally to Renan.

Kyler beamed when Renan suggested watching a movie. "Sûr!" he responded to the suggestion brightly. "J'aime les films! Ce sera beaucoup plus amusant que de simples recherches anciennes." Kyler furrowed a brow. "Cependant, je n'ai jamais regardé un film sur guerre. Mes trois soeurs ont toujours insisté sur des choses joyeuses. Ma petite soeur, Cassandra, a déclaré que c'était leur travail de 'préserver mon innocence'." Kyler used air quotes around the last part. Yes, he was regarded as innocent by practically everybody he met, but Kyler didn't understand Cassandra's logic of preserving his innocence by watching cheerful stuff. Surely, he could take the movies with the blood, gore, guts, and stuff...

"Cependant," Kyler continued. "Je suppose que les guerres mondiales sont bien, mais la révolution française ne serait-elle pas meilleure? Bien sûr, si vous pensez que les guerres mondiales sont un meilleur sujet ..." Kyler trailed off. In all honesty, everybody did stuff on the World Wars, especially World War II (which was mainly centered around Hitler, not France.)

"De toute façon," Kyler said, blinking owlishly. "Devons-nous nous rencontrer après l'école? Nous pouvons aller à la bibliothèque pour obtenir un film. À moins, vous avez déjà un ou quelque chose."

xxx"now i wish i was alone again,

xxxcoffee, cigarette, goodbye."

Renan glanced at his watch and groaned. He needed to be leaving to go to meet Kyler, but... frankly, he had no clue of what he was going to do with this kid. Apparently he'd never watched a war movie before. Something about his family protecting his innocence. Which meant that Renan had a considerable way to go to get him to a decent appreciation of sadness. And doing that was going to be the hard part. Shoving his wallet and keys into his pocket, he left the house and started the walk into the library.

Doing so gave him time to think. War was a really good place to start. But he also didn't want to depress the hell out of Kyler, because that wasn't exactly fair, and also not exactly what he was supposed to do. How the hell was he supposed to do that? This kid had never even seen a war movie; how was he going to handle being shown that the world was, in fact, a terrible, messy place? How was he supposed to strike a balance between those two things?

Was this what Renan was supposed to learn? How to strike a balance between complete depression and... whatever the hell Kyler was? He knew that most people had that balance right, but... that had always been a subconscious control, something he hadn't realised he'd been doing. Whenever he took conscious control, the problems started. It was almost like Renan was never really in control.

Renan shook his head, turning up the music in his headphones. He couldn't afford to think like this. He couldn't afford to overthink this and ultimately end up ruining someone's life... again. He looked up and realised that he was pretty much outside the library, and so took out one headphone and scanned the people around, looking for Kyler.

{ female sixteen junior anger #F35E64 #40dec8 }

Chris watched Isaac as he reached for the menu on the table. Under the table, her foot tapped the air impatiently.

"Can I have, uh...a banana bread and iced tea, please?" Isaac asked after a few moments of awkward silence. He closed the menu and set it back down on the table as the redheaded waitress nodded vigorously. She turned to Chris.

"Would you two like anything else?" she asked, clearly new enough to the job to feel eager about it, but definitely not green enough to not understand what to do.

"Nah, we're good," Chris answered for both her and Isaac in a rather languid manner. The waitress thought nothing about it, quickly striding towards the kitchen.

She's not one of the slow, let's-make-friends-with-our-customers types of employees, Chris thought to herself as she turned back to Isaac. Thank fuck, those types fucking piss me off.

"Thanks for the food," Isaac said softly, a small smile on his face. He clearly wasn't faking the gratitude. Chris shrugged nonchalantly.

"I brought you to a coffee shop," she stated dryly. "What else would I do?" Chris thought that much was obvious, although she wasn't going to refuse her human's gratitude.

There was a moment of awkward silence - contrary to popular belief, Anger was quite introverted and reserved, and wasn't too good of a conversationalist. ""So, uh, how long have you lived here in Gulfport?" Isaac was the one to break the ice, surprisingly.

"Definitely not as long as you," Chris stated the obvious. "I transferred schools this year though, so that's probably why you've never seen me. I came with my adopted sister, too," Chris barely refrained from cringing - she didn't hate Happiness at all, but sister was a bit much. "Bernadette Novak? You probably know her - she's clearly the sweetheart out of the two of us. People think we wouldn't get along that well, but I've survived with her since I was adopted thirteen years ago; we're cool."

Chris paused with her speaking when the redheaded waitress came back, an overly cheerful smile on her face. She set down the food gently. "One salted caramel hot chocolate and a slice of iced chocolate marble loaf cake for you," the waitress - her name tag said MARJO in big letters, which Chris recognized as Dutch - managed to say all that in one breath. Marjo turned to Isaac and set down his food. "And a slice of banana bread and one iced tea for you." Marjo turned to face both of them, a smile permanently plastered over her bright pink lips. "Enjoy your food!"

Chris nodded slightly, taking a long sip of her hot chocolate as the waitress went away. She took a bite of her cake. "I'm not sensitive about my history, so if you want to know something, ask away," she told Isaac. "But what about you? How's your family life? Have a nice time in elementary or not?" Chris tried to be direct without coming on too strong - Isaac's past might be a touchy subject for him. Chris wanted to get her information quickly and cleanly. She wasn't afraid to be brutal, but for this assignment, she had to tread lightly.

After French, Kyler and Renan had planned to meet each other at the library about an hour after school. This gave Kyler a chance to head home and check in with his parents and sisters before heading over to meet Renan.

"나는 집에있다!" Kyler called out his family's customary greeting as he opened his front door and headed into his house. One of his sisters, Vienne, gave him a practiced smile as he entered the kitchen. Vienne was a junior in Berkeley, and was currently majoring in business. She was on a one-week vacation, and was to head back to California in five days.

"How're you doing, Ky?" Vienne asked her brother as she poured a little cooking oil into her pan. "What's high school like nowadays?"

"School's okay," he responded cheerily. Vienne nodded absentmindedly as he spoke; outwardly, she was selectively mute and not one to go against the tide, but Kyler knew that his clever sister secretly kicked ass behind the scenes. "I have to be at the library in about an hour, though. I'm partnering up with Renan Bittencourt for French."

"Never heard of him," Vienne said bluntly, adding ingredients to her pan. Vienne was fluent in six languages - English, Korean, French, German, Russian, and Mandarin - along with being able to speak conversational Japanese and Arabic. Her choices in high school for her language course were quite limited.

"He's relatively new," Kyler explained, which basically meant that he didn't know Renan since kindergarten. "We're working on a project about a French war - we haven't decided which war yet, though."

Kyler caught Vienne furrowing her brows as she plated her concoction which turned out to be her and Kyler's afternoon snack. "French wars?" she asked in almost a suspicious manner. "That doesn't really seem like your speed."

Kyler shrugged. "I suggested food at first," he explained, which earned a slight eyeroll from Vienne. Kyler bit into his food. "But Renan wanted to do something about wars. It doesn't seem that bad. We're going to the library to get a movie."

Vienne paused, her food halfway to her mouth. "A movie," she repeated, as if she didn't quite believe it. "A war movie...as in blood? And conflict?"

"Sure, that's one way to put it."

Vienne swallowed a bite of her food. "Lovely," she forced through her teeth. She took a long sip of water. "You should get going, though. This Renan might not want to wait for you."

Kyler hopped off his chair, smiling brightly at his older yet slightly shorter sister. "Yeah, I probably should," he said, grabbing his stuff. "Bye, Vienne!"

Kyler left, oblivious to his elder sister rubbing her temples.

Image

Kyler caught sight of Renan rather quickly; he had only been waiting for about thirty seconds when he saw the older teen approach the library. Kyler waved once Renan's gaze settled on him.

"Do you have any ideas for what movie we should check out?" Kyler asked once Renan had approached him. "As you probably know, I'm kinda new to this."
