| Personality |
Geoffrey, or rather “Sir Lawrence,” has a very inflated, perspective of himself. He believes that he is every lady’s knight in shining armor, the guy you call to settle some scores, the guy with “swag” and “cool” who’s got all the gigs, and the guy that is the most popular around town. In reality, he’s the one flocking to the girls. He plays with them, flirts with them, and gets them in the bed with him. It doesn’t matter if they’re in a relationship or even married! He’s still persistent, and comes back even after some slaps in the face or fists from the guys. He walks with pride when he’s the one that picks fights with others for no reason at all. His arrogance and persistence in asserting that he is right all of the time has earned him many beatings, scars, and blackouts.

Some call it narcissistic, while he calls it “privileged.” The reality is a mixture of sickness and desire. Geoffrey has what we would today call “schizoaffective disorder,” specifically the bipolar version, however at that time it wasn’t an exact term to describe him. A mixture of the delusions of schizophrenia and the manic episodes of bipolar disorder plague this fellow. Geoffrey believes he is “Sir Lawrence,” a privileged knight descended from a secret order, who’s task is to eliminate sickness, despair, and rotten individuals off the earth. He sometimes has episodes of fast speech ranting about all of his “accomplishments” which are either made up from his mind, told by imaginary people, or the names of victims he has killed. These range from gangsters on the street, the homeless, girls that rejected him, their boyfriends or husbands, suicidal people, anyone that fits in some way his prescribed killing criteria. It is this type of behaviour that had him captured by police and sent to the Asylum. There is however, one girl that he seems to act quite different about. He calls her Ada, and he supposedly sees her everywhere he goes, even in the Asylum. However, no one has seen Ada or knows of anyone named Ada. The question is whether Ada is another one of the “Sir Lawrence” hallucinations or whether she is a real girl. Supposedly this “Sir Lawrence” stuff started because she gave him that name.

Geoffrey takes his delusions as reality, and so he trains his body for future fights. He tends to work out whenever he is free either at a gym or by himself (he does this at the Asylum as well) and eat lots of meat for strength. Although he’s supposed to be a “knight” he eats more like a barbarian, shovelling chicken leg after handful of fries after piece of steak after broco—wait a minute! He NEVER eats vegetables. Those are for girls (and chumps!)! He will go crazy if he has to wait to embark on another adventure, so he bugs the orderlies and staff for him to go out, hollering, acting like a baby, throwing things in his room, anything to get attention so he can get out of his cell. People that have observed Geoffrey on his outings wonder who he’s talking to and why he’s calling them names like “ogre,” “milady” and other medieval words. Sometimes, he just utters gibberish. Supposedly he meets Ada in these adventures and saves her from the clutches of evil, but no one has seen Ada. She apparently writes letters to him and he had them hidden under his mattress, but some people think he wrote them himself due to the sloppy handwriting. He makes other people write letters back to her and sends them to an address which was found out to be an abandoned house. He also has a fear of loud booming noises, particularly thunder. Whenever he hears a loud noise such as thunder, Geoffrey panics and tries to fling objects wherever the sound is coming from. He would need to be tranquilized sometimes in order to get him to calm down.

❝Welcome to my life❞

| History |
Geoffrey John Lawrence was born June 17, 1942, the same year the Asylum had opened. He was given “John” as his middle name because his whole family has it as the middle name. If he was a girl, he would have gotten his mother’s middle name “Jean.” He is the son of Matthew John Lawrence and Hannah Jean Lawrence, two middle class owners of a small bookstore. Geoffrey lived above the bookstore as a child and would often come here to read the latest books that would arrive. He used to love to read anything from children’s adventure stories to adult literature. He even read nonfiction books of famous people and some history books, particularly the medieval era. Geoffrey was the leader of his friends in re-enacting some of the scenes from his favorite novels and stories. Together, he and his friends have flown to Never Land, defeated Grendel and his mother, were knights of King Arthur’s round table, and had shoot outs in the Wild West. It would have been nice to continue this way, however the Red Scare of Communism got in the way of his childhood. Supposedly the bookstore was selling illegal books that promoted Communism and the owners distributed pamphlets and hidden messages on the Communist Party. One day Geoffrey age eight was coming to the bookstore from school when he heard a loud BOOOOM coming from its direction. Someone had planted bombs trying to eradicate another “source of Communism,” killing Geoffrey’s parents. Ever since that day, Geoffrey can’t stand the sound of loud explosions, particularly thunder. It always made him cringe, cry and cower in fear. Geoffrey stopped his love of reading, his leadership in re-enacting his stories, and he became a loner. Teachers often wondered whether his parents really were “selling Communism” or whether it was just a grudge from an unknown person.

Geoffrey dropped out of school at fifteen years old. Not that it mattered. He was failing every subject that he did attend due to lack of motivation. Sometimes he didn’t even show up to class. He moved between different relatives and eventually foster parents because he was always a disgrace. Geoffrey either acted out, bullied younger relatives and siblings, or ran away from his homes. After the drop out he never went back to his foster home, instead opting for a life in the streets. It was here that his love of adventure came back to him, though in an uglier form. Geoffrey was becoming delusional, taking his imaginations as reality and believing he was a higher knight who had to bring judgment on who he thought was “lower” than what society wanted. Around the age of fifteen, Geoffrey began to become “Sir Lawrence” and killed people who fit his imagined criteria of the lower people: sickly, depressed, evil minded, and rotten. At first, police didn’t mind since they would find gangsters and some unwanted homeless dead, making their job easier. However, the public started to go into rage after middle class citizens were being killed as well under Sir Lawrence’s wrath. You see, Geoffrey did not just kill people who really were sick or rotten. He also had hallucinations that said innocent people were hiding their true colors, so he killed those people as well. He sometimes killed because he got overly angry at somebody for no reason. Geoffrey also flirted with many of the women in the town and killed the ones that did not comply to his wishes. He even murdered their boyfriends or husbands. Nothing satisfied Geoffrey’s mind. He needed to flirt, he needed to kill, and he needed to fill his imagined duty as a secret knight. The one who planted this idea was a girl named “Ada” whom he supposedly met in the streets. According to Geoffrey, Ada gave him the nickname “Sir Lawrence” and revealed to him his mission and his identity as a knight. It was Ada that opened his eyes and allowed him to seek the path of killing the lower people. When Geoffrey was finally caught by the police, through the use of a woman accomplish to seduce him over to her, he was sentenced to go to Breckenridge Asylum because he was clearly following an insane delusion from his head.

At the Asylum, Geoffrey played out his fantasies whenever he could with other people: other patients, orderlies, even the nurses—not that they really played along. Often times though, he acted out by himself, wandering off the asylum because “Ada” was calling him. Ada supposedly visited him in the Asylum until the doctors deemed Geoffrey too dangerous for visits. She supposedly sent letters afterwards which appeared mysteriously in Geoffrey’s room, either under the door, with the medicine, with the breakfast, or under his pillow. Other people assume Geoffrey had written them himself because the handwriting was unlike any girl’s and was sloppy. Geoffrey insisted that it was “Ada” and forced people to write letters back to her in an address that she had given him when he was still on the streets. That addressed was traced to an abandoned house and Geoffrey was informed about this, but he insisted that the letters be sent to that house. Therefore, they pretended to send the letters and tried to assure Geoffrey that they will make it in time. Geoffrey had also flirted with any woman that he encountered whether patient or nurse, and had several fights with other male patients that crushed on these women. Often there would be thunderstorms and the nurses had to quickly tranquilize or sedate Geoffrey before he went into panic. One day, a doctor had ordered Geoffrey to come into a mysterious room, saying that Ada was in trouble and that Geoffrey was the only one that could help. Poor Geoffrey hurriedly went through the door and never came out. Upon entering the room Geoffrey was knocked in the head and blacked out and when he regained consciousness he was bound to a chair. Supposedly, a girl with tattered clothes was in the room and that was Ada. Geoffrey watched Ada tortured by the doctor as an experiment of whether people like Geoffrey could understand “true remorse.” Ada was beaten multiple times with a large metal chair, tied to a metal table in the room, and slowly mutilated to preserve several parts of her body. Her eyes, ears, tongue, hair, arms, legs, private parts, lungs, and heart were slowly cut from her with a knife and placed into different containers which the doctor scattered about in the Asylum. After witnessing this event, Geoffrey was left to starve in the room, tortured and hungry, unable to move out of the room to go looking for the pieces of Ada. Geoffrey thus haunts the Asylum, desperately trying to look for the hidden containers around the Asylum to piece together what he believes is real: Ada. He fears that his search is in vain, and that the scene that he witnessed in the room was all an illusion.

❝Theme Song❞

| A Beautiful Lie | 30 Seconds to Mars |

Lie awake in bed at night
And think about your life
Do you want to be different?
Try to let go of the truth
The battles of your youth
'Cause this is just a game

[Chorus:]
It's a beautiful lie
It's the perfect denial
Such a beautiful lie to believe in
So beautiful, beautiful it makes me

It's time to forget about the past
To wash away what happened last
Hide behind an empty face
Don't ask too much, just say
'Cause this is just a game

[Chorus]

(Oh Oh
The end of the world)

Everyone's looking at me
I'm running around in circles, baby
A quiet desperation's building higher
I've got to remember this is just a game

(So beautiful, beautiful
It's a beautiful lie
So beautiful, beautiful
It's a beautiful lie
So beautiful, beautiful...)

[Chorus]

BOOOOM!!!! the sky roared. Thunder crackled across the sky as Geoffrey lay on the rotten concrete floor of his prison in fetal position. He held his hands to his head as he rocked back and forth, alternating between ghastly shrieks of terror and unintelligible, fast-paced reassurances to himself. He wondered how long he would have to endure pain and confusion. The nurses would soon come to save him, no? They would always make the pain go away by injecting something that allowed him to sink into the dark abyss of nothingness where he sought refuge from his memories.

BOOOOOM!! the thunder growled to Geoffrey, causing him to hyperventilate from the force of his memories erupting in his mind. BOOOOM!!! took his parents away from him and for what reason? A tip from an unknown man that his parents were conducting illegal Communism practices. Surely the BOOM couldn’t have been aiming for his parents could it? His parents were not communists, and Geoffrey reassured himself of this fact, repeating this over and over. When the thunder roared again accusing his parents, Geoffrey defended his parents and shouted, “MY PARENTS ARE NOT COMMUNISTS!!” He was on the verge of crying but he didn’t want to let out any tears in fear that the nurses would come any minute now and treat him like a defenseless child. It was hard to contain his rage at the BOOM. All he wanted to do was act like a child, to let out his sorrows by crying hysterically, screaming his lungs out, and trashing the room. However, Geoffrey couldn’t do that. It would cause him to lose his honor as Sir Lawrence, and surely he must keep his honor.

After a quick flash of light and another roar from the dragon of the sky, Geoffrey couldn’t contain his emotions any longer. Tears flowed as he shouted once more at the dragon that killed his parents. “YOU’RE LYING!!! YOU’RE LYING!! YOU DON’T KNOW ANYTHING!!!” he kept yelling at the beast. No matter what he said, it wouldn’t listen. The dragon of the sky kept booming at the lost honor of Sir Lawrence, accusing him of being the liar with each grumble of its breath. He wondered why the nurses didn’t come yet? Did they forget about him? Or did they simply leave him to suffer on the floor?
“I didn’t leave you Sir Lawrence,” a gentle and familiar voice said softly to the fallen knight.

“Ada!?! Ada, is that you!?!”Geoffrey quickly sat up and looked around for the source of the voice. Behind him was an elegant young woman with curly blonde hair. She was dressed in a lacy, sky blue dress that hung down below her knees and was spread around her waist. Her feet were covered in navy blue boots with long laces that crisscrossed back and forth and were up to the middle of her calf. She was Ada, Geoffrey’s princess, whom he swore to protect. The one that had given him his title as Sir Lawrence.

“Ada, I’m sorry. I have lost my honor as a knight. I couldn’t control my emotions properly.”
“No need, Sir Lawrence. You have not lost any honor in my eyes.”

Geoffrey gazed at his angel, wiping away any leftover tears on his face. He slowly reached out his hand to his princess, hoping to kiss her hand from being restored honor from his young maiden. However, before he could reach out to her, a flash of lightning blinded the room and another “BOOM” grumbled from the sky. In an instant, Ada’s appearance changed from a beautiful maiden to a sickly woman in rags. Her feet were no longer adorned with shoes and her beautiful blonde hair was unkempt. Geoffrey quickly pulled his hand back, disgusted by the figure that stood in front of him and stared with eyes wide open at the changed Ada.

As the ragged Ada reached out to her knight, her eyes fell out of their sockets and rolled on the floor towards Geoffrey. He quickly moved back to a wall, cringing at the thought of fallen eyes touching him. Ada slowly walked towards Geoffrey with more of her body parts falling out of her: her tangled blonde hair fell in large clumps until her head was bald, her nose shriveled up and fell from her face, her ears detached themselves from the sides of her head, and her fingers separated themselves from her hands, one by one, with eerie cracking noises sounding at each disconnection. Geoffrey was frozen in place, terrorized by the ghastly creature before him.

“Wha
what do you want from me!??!” Geoffrey shouted at the creature.

“Sir Lawrence
I need you to find me
” Ada’s voice replied in ghastly whispers that seemed to be as close to Geoffrey’s ears despite the body being too far.

“What are you talking about?”

“I’ve fallen to pieces
the Doctor
he hid me away Sir Lawrence
hid me away so that you will suffer..”

“He hid you?? WHERE!?!?”

“Find me Sir Lawrence
it’s your duty as a knight to protect the princess
FIND MEEEEAAAHHH!!!!!!”

With that hair-raising scream, Ada’s mouth was wide open, leaving her tongue to swish and swish until it detached from her mouth and fell onto the floor, wriggling about. Geoffrey shuddered in fright as he observed the tongue moving like a wave and squirming on the floor until it suddenly decayed and withered away. When he looked up, Ada was gone, leaving Geoffrey to resort to the same fetal position again as another “BOOOM” roared around the room.

Geoffrey continued to stay in fetal position, cowering at the sound of several piano keys being hammered down abruptly.

“T-that must be Clari,” he thought. Geoffrey took a deep breath and tried to compose himself, filling his thoughts with less of Ada and more of the many antics he’d want to do with Clari.

“I could never get her to be my wench for a night. What a shame. She was quite charming herself.”

Thunder roared again and Geoffrey trembled at the sound and at the feel of a soft hand touching his back. “Hey- Ada?” a lady’s voice asked. It was the fair maiden Gwen. Geoffrey wondered why she would attempt to console him in his state of weakness and humiliation. He would often try to compete with her own friends that no one else saw. Perhaps they knew where Ada was and they have consulted with her. Geoffrey needed to take the chance to try and understand Ada’s strange request and horrifying state.

“I’m sure Ada’ll be fine,” Gwen maiden replied in a reassuring tone.

“Wendy Darling,” Geoffrey teased, referring her as the Wendy of the Peter Pan books, “I suspect those maggot pies of yours have something to do with my Ada.”

Geoffrey slowly brought himself up to crouch over Gwen and gently stroke her from her hair to her waist, trying to recover from the scene of him sprawled on the floor like a baby. A knight must redeem himself from his dishonor and so he must try and delight the fair maiden who decided to come for company.

“Don’t worry Wendy Darling. Peter may have abandoned you for Neverland’s lost boys and youth, but I will give you something better than magic.”

Geoffrey scrambled around the room until he found his cardboard sword and shield, Bogdan and Dragomir respectively. He stared into the sword, as though his own reflection was staring back at him, and tried to fix his hair so that it would be more presentable then it was a few minutes ago.

“Wendy Darling, I’ll give you an adventure better than Peter’s magic flight. We have a mystery to solve. A damsel in distress torn in different pieces of her body. Oh the horror of it all! And I need the help of another lady as yourself. After all, you have the help of your bawdy, reeky, pignuts that seem to be in the know yes?”

He said all of this, pacing back and forth with occasional looks to Gwen, acting boastful and arrogant with knightly gestures and exaggerated facial expressions. Finally he turned to Gwen, reaching his hand out to her smiling and asked, “Will you join me milady?”

______________________________________________________

“Wendy Darling,” Geoffrey teased after a few moments, and Gwen let herself smile- more of a smirk and a generous eye-roll, really, but still a smile at heart. Why she had ever told him of her nick-name biography she would never understand. “I suspect those maggot pies of yours have something to do with my Ada.”. Gwen's brow furrowed at the words and she ran them through what she was beginning to think of as "The Sir Lawrence filter" in her head. Maggot pies.... Zella and Joseph? Gwen reflexively looked back towards the entrance of the room, where their presence lay- in the back of her mind at least. She couldn't see them, but they were there, even if they weren't speaking at the moment. Most likely thinking up new methods of taunting, they were. Still, that was who Geoffrey seemed to be speaking about, so Gwen smiled at her accomplishment and went on through the rest of the sentence. He obviously thought Zella or Joseph had information about his precious Ada.

Geoffrey leaned up and did something odd, but oddly Sir Lawrence-like, running his hand over Gwen's hair and over her shoulders like he was trying to comfort her. Which was off, for Gwen at least, because he was the one in need of comfort. Must be something about his honor or knight hood that didn't allow him to be in distress around a wench. Gwendolyn smiled and took a deep breath, going along with him for the moment. He certainly was interesting, in any regard. Gave her imagination a workout that was for sure. Her imagination and her legs, if he chose to run again. Where he got his energy from was a mystery.

“Don’t worry Wendy Darling. Peter may have abandoned you for Neverland’s lost boys and youth, but I will give you something better than magic.”. Wendy held back a laugh, only allowing her mirth to pull the corners of her lips up instead. Sometimes Gwendolyn couldn't be sure what 'Sir Lawrence' saw when he looked at people. He would make a great stage actor. He could think anyone was anything- weather it was himself as a daring knight or Gwen as Wendy Darling. But she went along with it anyway, standing up watching him search the room for his cardboard toys with barely-contained amusement.

Geoffrey found his cardboard sword and shield and Gwen walked over to him, careful to avoid going too near the sword in case he swung it- she couldn't even imagine him thinking he truly gave her an injury of any kind. She would never hear the end of it! A knight harming an innocent- how unthinkable. Geoffrey held the sword up, broad side facing him. He looked into it like he could truly see himself, a gleaming reflection in the argent silver instead of simply looking at a piece of brown board. He even tried to fix his hair, but with no real reflection to go on all he managed to do, in Wendy's opinion, was messy it up more.

“Wendy Darling, I’ll give you an adventure better than Peter’s magic flight. We have a mystery to solve. A damsel in distress torn in different pieces of her body. Oh the horror of it all! And I need the help of another lady as yourself. After all, you have the help of your bawdy, reeky, pignuts that seem to be in the know yes?” Geoffrey said with all manner of knightly pageantry- pacing, facial expressions that could be seen from three miles away, all of the usual pomp and circumstance a visit to Sir Lawrence entailed. “Will you join me milady?” Geoffrey extended a hand to her with the words. Gwen thought his words over before speaking.

"Gwendolyn- adventure? Mystery..... girl torn to pieces, how horrid. Need your help because Zella and Joseph know all about Ada. Join me? Gwen was pleased with how quickly she deduced what he was saying and she nodded thoughtfully towards him. Best to play along, at least. Geoffrey was too far gone to risk anger now.

"Why of course, Sir Lawrence. I would much rather be on the side of a knight than behind his sword and I would never pass up such an acquisition. Especially an acquisition full of such danger and mystery," Gwen held back the laugh she wanted to let loose into the world and said the words with a believable straight face. She tried her best to see what Geoffrey saw, though her imagination wasn't as spectacular as it needed to be, but she managed. If she thought about it she could see the gleam of his sword and feel the tension of danger and mystery in the air, so it would suffice.
