| Personality |
Geoffrey, or rather âSir Lawrence,â has a very inflated, perspective of himself. He believes that he is every ladyâs knight in shining armor, the guy you call to settle some scores, the guy with âswagâ and âcoolâ whoâs got all the gigs, and the guy that is the most popular around town. In reality, heâs the one flocking to the girls. He plays with them, flirts with them, and gets them in the bed with him. It doesnât matter if theyâre in a relationship or even married! Heâs still persistent, and comes back even after some slaps in the face or fists from the guys. He walks with pride when heâs the one that picks fights with others for no reason at all. His arrogance and persistence in asserting that he is right all of the time has earned him many beatings, scars, and blackouts.
Some call it narcissistic, while he calls it âprivileged.â The reality is a mixture of sickness and desire. Geoffrey has what we would today call âschizoaffective disorder,â specifically the bipolar version, however at that time it wasnât an exact term to describe him. A mixture of the delusions of schizophrenia and the manic episodes of bipolar disorder plague this fellow. Geoffrey believes he is âSir Lawrence,â a privileged knight descended from a secret order, whoâs task is to eliminate sickness, despair, and rotten individuals off the earth. He sometimes has episodes of fast speech ranting about all of his âaccomplishmentsâ which are either made up from his mind, told by imaginary people, or the names of victims he has killed. These range from gangsters on the street, the homeless, girls that rejected him, their boyfriends or husbands, suicidal people, anyone that fits in some way his prescribed killing criteria. It is this type of behaviour that had him captured by police and sent to the Asylum. There is however, one girl that he seems to act quite different about. He calls her Ada, and he supposedly sees her everywhere he goes, even in the Asylum. However, no one has seen Ada or knows of anyone named Ada. The question is whether Ada is another one of the âSir Lawrenceâ hallucinations or whether she is a real girl. Supposedly this âSir Lawrenceâ stuff started because she gave him that name.
Geoffrey takes his delusions as reality, and so he trains his body for future fights. He tends to work out whenever he is free either at a gym or by himself (he does this at the Asylum as well) and eat lots of meat for strength. Although heâs supposed to be a âknightâ he eats more like a barbarian, shovelling chicken leg after handful of fries after piece of steak after brocoâwait a minute! He NEVER eats vegetables. Those are for girls (and chumps!)! He will go crazy if he has to wait to embark on another adventure, so he bugs the orderlies and staff for him to go out, hollering, acting like a baby, throwing things in his room, anything to get attention so he can get out of his cell. People that have observed Geoffrey on his outings wonder who heâs talking to and why heâs calling them names like âogre,â âmiladyâ and other medieval words. Sometimes, he just utters gibberish. Supposedly he meets Ada in these adventures and saves her from the clutches of evil, but no one has seen Ada. She apparently writes letters to him and he had them hidden under his mattress, but some people think he wrote them himself due to the sloppy handwriting. He makes other people write letters back to her and sends them to an address which was found out to be an abandoned house. He also has a fear of loud booming noises, particularly thunder. Whenever he hears a loud noise such as thunder, Geoffrey panics and tries to fling objects wherever the sound is coming from. He would need to be tranquilized sometimes in order to get him to calm down.
| History |
Geoffrey John Lawrence was born June 17, 1942, the same year the Asylum had opened. He was given âJohnâ as his middle name because his whole family has it as the middle name. If he was a girl, he would have gotten his motherâs middle name âJean.â He is the son of Matthew John Lawrence and Hannah Jean Lawrence, two middle class owners of a small bookstore. Geoffrey lived above the bookstore as a child and would often come here to read the latest books that would arrive. He used to love to read anything from childrenâs adventure stories to adult literature. He even read nonfiction books of famous people and some history books, particularly the medieval era. Geoffrey was the leader of his friends in re-enacting some of the scenes from his favorite novels and stories. Together, he and his friends have flown to Never Land, defeated Grendel and his mother, were knights of King Arthurâs round table, and had shoot outs in the Wild West. It would have been nice to continue this way, however the Red Scare of Communism got in the way of his childhood. Supposedly the bookstore was selling illegal books that promoted Communism and the owners distributed pamphlets and hidden messages on the Communist Party. One day Geoffrey age eight was coming to the bookstore from school when he heard a loud BOOOOM coming from its direction. Someone had planted bombs trying to eradicate another âsource of Communism,â killing Geoffreyâs parents. Ever since that day, Geoffrey canât stand the sound of loud explosions, particularly thunder. It always made him cringe, cry and cower in fear. Geoffrey stopped his love of reading, his leadership in re-enacting his stories, and he became a loner. Teachers often wondered whether his parents really were âselling Communismâ or whether it was just a grudge from an unknown person.
Geoffrey dropped out of school at fifteen years old. Not that it mattered. He was failing every subject that he did attend due to lack of motivation. Sometimes he didnât even show up to class. He moved between different relatives and eventually foster parents because he was always a disgrace. Geoffrey either acted out, bullied younger relatives and siblings, or ran away from his homes. After the drop out he never went back to his foster home, instead opting for a life in the streets. It was here that his love of adventure came back to him, though in an uglier form. Geoffrey was becoming delusional, taking his imaginations as reality and believing he was a higher knight who had to bring judgment on who he thought was âlowerâ than what society wanted. Around the age of fifteen, Geoffrey began to become âSir Lawrenceâ and killed people who fit his imagined criteria of the lower people: sickly, depressed, evil minded, and rotten. At first, police didnât mind since they would find gangsters and some unwanted homeless dead, making their job easier. However, the public started to go into rage after middle class citizens were being killed as well under Sir Lawrenceâs wrath. You see, Geoffrey did not just kill people who really were sick or rotten. He also had hallucinations that said innocent people were hiding their true colors, so he killed those people as well. He sometimes killed because he got overly angry at somebody for no reason. Geoffrey also flirted with many of the women in the town and killed the ones that did not comply to his wishes. He even murdered their boyfriends or husbands. Nothing satisfied Geoffreyâs mind. He needed to flirt, he needed to kill, and he needed to fill his imagined duty as a secret knight. The one who planted this idea was a girl named âAdaâ whom he supposedly met in the streets. According to Geoffrey, Ada gave him the nickname âSir Lawrenceâ and revealed to him his mission and his identity as a knight. It was Ada that opened his eyes and allowed him to seek the path of killing the lower people. When Geoffrey was finally caught by the police, through the use of a woman accomplish to seduce him over to her, he was sentenced to go to Breckenridge Asylum because he was clearly following an insane delusion from his head.
At the Asylum, Geoffrey played out his fantasies whenever he could with other people: other patients, orderlies, even the nursesânot that they really played along. Often times though, he acted out by himself, wandering off the asylum because âAdaâ was calling him. Ada supposedly visited him in the Asylum until the doctors deemed Geoffrey too dangerous for visits. She supposedly sent letters afterwards which appeared mysteriously in Geoffreyâs room, either under the door, with the medicine, with the breakfast, or under his pillow. Other people assume Geoffrey had written them himself because the handwriting was unlike any girlâs and was sloppy. Geoffrey insisted that it was âAdaâ and forced people to write letters back to her in an address that she had given him when he was still on the streets. That addressed was traced to an abandoned house and Geoffrey was informed about this, but he insisted that the letters be sent to that house. Therefore, they pretended to send the letters and tried to assure Geoffrey that they will make it in time. Geoffrey had also flirted with any woman that he encountered whether patient or nurse, and had several fights with other male patients that crushed on these women. Often there would be thunderstorms and the nurses had to quickly tranquilize or sedate Geoffrey before he went into panic. One day, a doctor had ordered Geoffrey to come into a mysterious room, saying that Ada was in trouble and that Geoffrey was the only one that could help. Poor Geoffrey hurriedly went through the door and never came out. Upon entering the room Geoffrey was knocked in the head and blacked out and when he regained consciousness he was bound to a chair. Supposedly, a girl with tattered clothes was in the room and that was Ada. Geoffrey watched Ada tortured by the doctor as an experiment of whether people like Geoffrey could understand âtrue remorse.â Ada was beaten multiple times with a large metal chair, tied to a metal table in the room, and slowly mutilated to preserve several parts of her body. Her eyes, ears, tongue, hair, arms, legs, private parts, lungs, and heart were slowly cut from her with a knife and placed into different containers which the doctor scattered about in the Asylum. After witnessing this event, Geoffrey was left to starve in the room, tortured and hungry, unable to move out of the room to go looking for the pieces of Ada. Geoffrey thus haunts the Asylum, desperately trying to look for the hidden containers around the Asylum to piece together what he believes is real: Ada. He fears that his search is in vain, and that the scene that he witnessed in the room was all an illusion.

| A Beautiful Lie | 30 Seconds to Mars |
And think about your life
Do you want to be different?
Try to let go of the truth
The battles of your youth
'Cause this is just a game
[Chorus:]
It's a beautiful lie
It's the perfect denial
Such a beautiful lie to believe in
So beautiful, beautiful it makes me
It's time to forget about the past
To wash away what happened last
Hide behind an empty face
Don't ask too much, just say
'Cause this is just a game
[Chorus]
(Oh Oh
The end of the world)
Everyone's looking at me
I'm running around in circles, baby
A quiet desperation's building higher
I've got to remember this is just a game
(So beautiful, beautiful
It's a beautiful lie
So beautiful, beautiful
It's a beautiful lie
So beautiful, beautiful...)
[Chorus]
