Lucy twiddled her thumbs, squeezed her fingers, wrung her hands, and stared at her lap through the entire speech that the headmaster had given. It had been a hard enough time on Lucy when she first saw that list, all the bad, possible outcomes played out in her head for those people. They're going to be kidnapped. They're going to be tortured. They're going to be killed and their body sent to their parents' doorstep. They're going to be tied up; bruised, cut, and starved; then finished off and their mangled body sent as a message. Their family is going to grieve, then the families going to get kidnapped and have the same thing done to them. And what if it starts happening to people not on the list? These are the thoughts that had been swirling every waking hour since the list had gone up and kept her awake through the night. She had gone a full week without sleeping hardly at all. Her studies for the past week fluxed greatly, her homework improved as that's what she ended up doing all night while worrying, but in class she could hardly keep her eyes open.

Now this.

This stupid announcement that the missing boy, one of the ones on the list, is now unconscious.

What happened to him? Did they torture him? Did they tie him up? Was he there for days on end unable to move?

Dennis sat next to her, her only friend in Gryffindor. Her friends still weren't entirely sure how to handle Lucy when she got like this. They didn't tease her and for that she was grateful and why they were still friends, however they often just left her alone, unsure that they should do anything let alone what it should be. Dennis looked to her every now and then looking as if he wanted to say something, but then turning back to his food.

"You should try eating," Dennis said with his own mouth full, something else she'd been neglecting to do. He pushed a plate of eggs in front of her, something his mum had told him was eat eggs when your stomach is upset, it's protein and 'light', whatever that meant.

Lysander listened intently as headmaster Whitaker gave his speech. Nodding slightly as the headmaster spoke. Lysander was on edge obvious only to those that knew him well as he remained mostly calm this morning. He looked beside him at his doppelganger, his younger brother sitting wearily beside him. He wasn't quite sure what Lorcan was thinking about all these new safety precautions but Lysander was all too aware how necessary they were. He gave his brother a smug smile of sorts.

"See I told you I wasn't just being paranoid. Since the beginning of this whole list business Lysander had made it no secret how worried he was about the danger this could pose. It seemed obvious to him that it was some kind of hit list. He had already made sure that Lorcan was never out of his sights save for classes, and his prefect patrols. They were purebloods, and purebloods were disappearing, he wasn't quite sure what he would do if he lost his twin to whoever was behind these attacks. He had even been advising and in some cases outright demanding many of his housemate especially the younger Hufflepuffs travel in groups. He wouldn't be able to live with himself if any them were hurt like Argus Flint and Magdalene Bulstrode.

Despite all the precautions he was trying to take he still sighed slightly at the mention of the patrols being doubled, but resolved that it was likely for the best. When teh headmaster was finished and the food appeared he started to wonder who the third person in their group would be for the time being. They had plenty of friends in and out of their house so he decided it likely wouldn't matter.

The list was on everyones minds. It was easy to call it fake and brush it off like it was nothing. At least until two people from that list had gone missing. One had resurfaced in a coma and the other, still missing. Whoever sent the list was really taking people and doing something to them to send a message to Pure Bloods mostly. And Cullen found himself on that very dangerous list. It was concerning to say the least and he couldn't fathom why he would be on this list save for the fact that he was a Pure Blood. Sure his family had a history of Aurors so maybe the person doing this was a child of someone sent to Azkaban but that wouldn't explain the rest of the list. Whoever was doing this had a grudge against Pure Bloods so perhaps the person in question was a Half-blood or a muggle born witch or wizard. He could understand the anger and hate one could have against Pure Bloods, but not everyone that was a Pure Blood hated or looked down on the others. Well, now that he was being targeted simply because of his blood, he could understand that anger. That didn't make the list right and it boiled his blood. The person behind this list needed to be found and punished for hurting other students.

Cullen sighed to himself as he listened to the headmaster continue speaking. The patrols would be doubled and everyone needed to stay in groups of three at least. He wasn't too worried about that for himself. He had friends and he often was in the company of other students and other Prefects. He was more worried about the younger students. As a 6th year, he knew more about defending himself than the younger generation and he had a duty to protect them. Especially those that were on the list. Many of the names on the list were from Slytherin and Gryffindor. He let his blue-green eyes scan the tables as the students began to talk amongst each other. Most would have an easy time grouping up, but there would be those who didn't have a close network of friends. He would round those students up to make sure they got along and were protected.

The Ravenclaw Prefect glanced down when the food appeared. He wasn't all that hungry but he would have to eat if he wanted to keep his strength and mind sharp and ready for whatever happened next. He forced himself to grab an English muffin and buttered it, his mind elsewhere. Who could be doing this? It could be one of the professors. He glanced at the table in the front of the room but they were all engaged in conversation. But it could also be a student. He wasn't quite sure where to begin. He was going to have to watch those he came into contact with carefully. His first thought went to Ash since she was a trouble maker but that didn't make sense. She was on the list. He may just have to take her under his wing if she couldn't find a couple of people to group up with. She was a bit at odds with everyone, including her own house. Joy. She was the one that talked to snakes. Wonderful. He did not like snakes in the least.

Cullen did notice she was talking Rose Weasley, he believed. He wondered if she'd find a group after all. He hoped she didn't say anything nasty to ruin her chance at making new friends that would help her out in a bad spot. Yes, he'd wait until everyone had grouped up and see who was left and then take them under his wing. He figured that would be the best way to protect the most students. He took a bite of his food as he continued to scan the room.

Cullen watched as everyone started to form groups. He was surprised at how easily seemed to be creating groups. That was a good sign for them. He smile and even toyed with a spoon in his tea, something he liked to do manually. Even the trouble making slytherin girl had found a group to tag along with. Good for her. Not so good for Cullen it seemed. He had been so focused on everyone else that he found he didn't have anyone to group up with. Ooops. That hadn't happened before. Usually he had people to travel with. They were usually other Prefects but they had all already attached themselves to some of the younger students. He sat up and finished the tea in his cup before pushing his dishes away. It was time to think about who he was actually going to group with.

He happened to glance up and saw Lysander looking at him. A light blush tinged his cheeks. How long had been the other Prefect staring at him? He offered a little smile and waved back at the man. Lysander seemed to have quite a fan group, including him. The two of them were friends and they had often insinuated things but they had never actually taken any steps to make an official type of relationship. It did make things a bit exciting since they didn't know where they stood around each other. Were they just friends or were they actually an odd sort of couple? He did want an answer but he was... he was slightly afraid what that answer would be. Of course the flirting had just been a fleeting, passing, bit of fun. Was that all this was now? Cullen wasn't sure if that was true for him anymore. He straightened a little at his seat when he saw the man get up from his bench, still looking at him. But then... the group of girls he had been watching had approached the brothers and it looked like Lysander was going to go with them. He deflated a little but he didn't let it show on his face. It was better this way. They needed more protection than he did. He'd just... meet up with Lysander later.

Cullen got up from his seat and glance around and his eyes fell on Lucy. Oh. He hadn't noticed that she was still alone. Her friends were trying to get her to go somewhere but she had remained in her seat. He would hang out with her then. He was sure that they could pick up a few other individuals as well. He smiled as he approached Lucy. He gave a wave when she looked up and sat down beside her.

"Hey, Lucy," he called, "How is it going? You have any plans to go anywhere? I figured I'd partner up with you," he grinned and gave her a wink.

Ash spun slowly on her heel to face the younger girl directly, a bit surprised that she had spoken to her but not letting it show on her face. "You'd be surprised how low some people will stoop to save face," she said matter-of-factly, giving Cubert an off-hand thumbs up when he gave his name. (Wait, no, his name was Cullen. Cullen.) "And who says I don't know Golden Boy over here? He's a prefect, I'm the Dark Lord Rising, allegedly. We clash all the time."

She actually didn't think she'd spoken to him all that often, but the few times she could remember he'd been a bit cross with her, usually about how she'd chosen to deal with those who had dared cross the other members of her house.

"Slytherins don't get bullied," she replied, first keeping pace with the Ravenclaw prefect before falling back a step when she remembered the kid's shorter legs. The kid who she also realized hadn't yet introduced herself. "They were just praising me for my initiative in returning a lost book," she continued easily. "I would've gone with them to return the book myself, but like I said, I forgot to get something that doesn't exist. Namely the fees attached to it. Whoops."

"Speakin' of names, you've yet to give yours," She turns again to look at the fourth year, walking backwards as she speaks. Ash didn't feel the need to giver her own name, being fairly satisfied that these two already knew who she was, else they wouldn't have approached her.

"I told you, I found it," Ash replied curtly. "And no, it was about snakes. Magic snakes, basilisks, amphitheres, tsuchinoko, hoop snakes, Nidhogg. That kind of thing. It was mostly just conjecture on muggle mythology and how they might translate into legitimate magical creatures. The author claimed muggle mythology was the best route to finding magical serpents, since snakes in general tend to be shy and difficult to find if you don't know where to look. I mean, there was a basilisk within the Hogwarts plumbing system for literal centuries with no one knowing. It also talked about dragons for a bit, and how they might relate."

She coughed awkwardly and scratched the back of her head. She really hadn't intended to speak that much on the matter, but once she'd opened her mouth it had all come tumbling out in a rapid, barely decipherable mess. Luckily, their arrival at the Quidditch lockers was enough to distract from her slip.

She ignored Cullen's attempts at self-deprecation and hopped over to the lockers near the back corner, where she'd kept her broom the past couple of years before finally making the team. It had been a close thing, but it had been so, so satisfying when she finally managed to pull ahead of the usual rabble who applied each year. She'd never admit it, would keep it hidden deep down in the depths of her mind forever, but there had been some level of relief at finally being accepted into something since coming to Hogwarts. Yes, there was the Magical Creature's Club, but that was a small club, and they probably hadn't had the option of rejecting anyone at the time she'd joined.

Her old, splintery broom in hand, she did an about face and walked back toward the door. "Alright, who wants to see how flying's done?"
