a character in “Escape to the Outside”, as played by Blueshadow

Description

Image
Name:Chris Baxter
Age:15
Gender:Male
Mutation/Abilities:Chris has been mutated with dog DNA since he was aboutfive years old. His senses are extremely heightened beyond that of any human. Due to being mutated with dog DNA at such a young age he also has the ability to transform into a dog at will, and in addition he also has more pronounced instincts often becoming downright bestial in dangerous situations. He has also been modified with enhanced strength and is much stronger than most guards and many of the other mutants.
Mutation Appearance: Chris' body has been highly effected by his mutation and the dog DNA is easily noticed in his appearance. His ears are pointed, very canine like, and are located at the top of his head. He also has a canine tail that he is unable to shift away. In addition the dog DNA has also affected his feet which now resemble paws more than feet, he only has four toes on each foot, small claws, and paw pads located on the soles of his feet. His ears, tail, and feet are all covered in thin black fur.
Description: Chris is a youthful looking boy with a strong build. He stands at 5’5 and is fairly well muscled for a boy his age. His hair is a light brown and is fairly long reaching midway down his back, though he’d like to cut it shorter he doesn’t have the means to do so. While for the most part his body is free of marks he has been in the lab for many years and has gained several scars over the years. The most prominent of which is a large jagged scar just below his neck. As a dog Chris is much smaller but is still quite large for a dog, and he is covered in jet black fur.
Personality: Despite all the torture Chris has been put through over the years he is an extremely optimistic person always thinking that everything will eventually change for the better. He is also severally loyal to anyone he considers a friend and will always be there for those he is close to. To his fellow mutants he is very friendly and outgoing a trait which has put him on good terms with many of the other mutants. However to his enemies, mainly anyone that works for the lab in any way, he is extremely guarded and defiant often giving off an air of fearlessness towards the guards despite all the torture he is regularly put through. His contempt towards the lab and his situation is blatantly obvious to both the guards and his fellow mutants. While he isn’t stupid Chris tends to act on emotions and instinct rather than logic and rational, so he often tends to rush into situations without thinking.
Strengths: In battle he is extremely animalistic and alert. He tends to use his enhanced strength and alertness to overwhelm his opponents with his sheer power. His enhanced senses and instincts also make him a skilled hunter and tracker.
Weaknesses:He is extremely reckless and tends to act without thinking, a trait which can easily be used against him.
Fears: He hates being alone for very long and being separated from other people and is absolutely terrified of being alone.
Writing Sample:The night was calm and serene. Chris couldn't sleep, not tonight at least, he was too excited. Tomorrow was his birthday, he’d be turning five tomorrow and his parents promised that tomorrow would be a big day for him. He could imagine it now. The day would start with a small gathering of friends and family, then cake and eventually he’d get to open his gifts! He couldn't contain his excitement, but soon his thoughts were cleanly shattered by a loud noise outside. Excitement turning into curiosity Chris walked over to the window and opened it slowly, he could hear voices coming from outside. He could not make out anything that was being said or even who the voices belonged to but his curiosity was peaked. Something was out front and he wanted to find out what! It would only be a quick look and it wasn't very far away, what harm could it do? With that Chris quickly hopped out the window, being careful not to make too much noise. He quickly and quietly made his way to whatever was making all this noise and when he got to the end of the street he finally saw it. It was a black van surrounded by several men, they appeared to be looking for something but they weren’t being particularly quiet about it. Suddenly Chris got a bad feeling about all this and he quietly tried to make his way back. Unfortunately he wasn’t all that quiet himself. In his hurry to leave Chris mistakenly stepped on a fallen twig alerting the men. They were on him in an instant and Chris immediately regretted his decision. As soon as they grabbed hold of him they threw Chris into the back of the van. Chris was terrified and it showed on his face, in an instant all he had known was taken from him, and he wasn't sure if he’d ever be back home.

So begins...

It seemed like a normal day outside, the sun rose as expected over the forest and a nearby city. Average people went about their business as usual, oblivious as to what was going on several miles outside of the designated hiking areas. Unbeknownst to them, individuals who ventured too far, who went missing from what should be fatal accidents, and even those who have never seen the outside world, are locked in their own personal hell of needles, white walls, bright lights, and pain. Only known as The Lab, this torturous facility experiments on living humans; the younger the better. Taking non-human DNA and splicing it into the human genome is what their scientists are most successful at. Then testing their abilities to the limits. Often only stopping when the mutant was close to death.
Funded by a select few of the government, this Lab has been able to remain functioning out of the public eye and even expand its business to several locations around the country. Workers of the Lab are sworn to absolute secrecy, are watched if they show signs of being disloyal, and are only relived of their posts because of old age or the complete inability to do their jobs. Most are there from the promise of money, not realizing in the beginning what the people actually were that they were hired to guard. Instead of prisoners they found children and young adults. Some seemed normal, until they were seen up close and showed their abnormal features of tails, animal-like ears, different colored skin, eyes, hair, even feathers and scales covering their skin. But once they accepted, they were not allowed to leave.
The higher-ups will do anything to keep their merchandise from being discovered. When malfunctions in the facility happen, enabling the bolder mutants to run away, they are hunted and brought back, dead or alive. But with cities becoming larger, more complex and hi-tech, it is much easier for mutants to hide and guards to get caught by authorities.

Dray
He was finally let out of the dark room. The door was opened and the guards grabbed his arms, and then proceeded to drag him to his cell. He let out a shuddering breath, he hated the dark room, a small cramped space with no light. He had no reason to be scared of that, yet every time he was faced with it, he couldn’t breathe and started to panic.
He was thrown carelessly into his cell and he stumbled, barely catching himself on the edge of his cot before he hit his head on the corner. What was deemed a bed was not that comfortable, and barely fit his body anymore. He eased himself down on the floor and started rubbing his leg muscles that were still cramped and sore. He almost wished he could go to the infirmary; the beds there were softest any of the mutants had felt. Though the healer ladies often said they weren’t the best.
He watched out the bars, observing the guards as they took their posts at random spots in the hallway. It kept his mind off his itchy clothing, the bland grey he saw everyday was a poor match against the bright colors that appeared on the mutants. Early on he realized it was only them because the scientists and guards all looked as bland as their clothing. He hoped he was given a new set of clothes soon, but pants would be best, his current ones were coming up to his ankles.

Chris stayed motionless as he was laying down in his bed. Despite all apperances he wasn't asleep though merely daydreaming. He thought of the outside, of his family, and of his old life. He dreamed of being free again to once more be with his family and finally see the outside again. This was a common occurrence for Chris nowadays. Despite the bleak conditions he was living in, with all the beatings and tortue that would often leave his body a beaten mess, Chris was a notorious optimist. He always beloved that someday he'd escape, eventually things had to get better right? It was the only thing that kept him sane in this place and he couldn't help but crack a smile at the idea of being free again,no matter how unlikely it really was.

In an instant he was pulled away from his daydreaming as the day began and the guards began to report to their posts. His ears perked up at the sound of them entering the cell block and began conversing with each other. Though these particular guards may not be the cruelest they were still guards, keeping all the mutants in their cages. Chris found his smile contorting into an angry sneer at the very sound of them.

Chris Sat by the bars of his cells making absolutely sure to keep an eye on the two guards, most of them couldn't be trusted and he liked to stay alert whenever they were about. Which was pretty much all the time. He listened to them talk carefully, and what he heard left him pleasantly surprised and a tad confused. As they spoke they seemed kinder, and gentler then most of the other guards and they even came to the defense of one of the other mutants! These two seemed to have the decency to treat the other mutants with something that resembled either common decency or pity. He couldn't quiet tell which though. These two were certainly unique as far as other guards went. Chris decided that he would still keep a cautious eye on them but he'd be sure to treat them with far more respect than the others.

Chris smiled and gave a sigh of relief when food was finally brought into the cells. He had smelt the food as soon as the guards had stepped foot into the cells. When they came to his cell and left the food he practically jumped at it! He was starving, though the slope that they were usually fed was far from appetizing, it was still food and they didn't get fed enough as it was so he made sure to enjoy what he had. As he was eating however more guards passed by his cell this time leading away two mutants. It must be time for the Games. He looked at the two who were meant to fight each other, Dray and Hawk. He didn't know much about Dray other than him being extremely quiet. Hawk however he had heard of and if what he heard was true than Dray would have a tough time ahead of him. Chris felt rather bad for both Dray and hawk though he was far more relieved that he wasn't chosen to fight in the next game. He looked at both the mutants as they passed with worried eyes, he hoped at least one of them would be okay, though that wasn't very likely. "Good luck." He made sure to speak soft enough that the gaurds wouldn't hear him but he was certain at least one of the other mutants would. Most of them had stronger hearing than normal humans and he was very aware that Hawk's hearing was extremely potent.

"Early Games today. Feel free to come and watch.” Max's stomach rolled. She had had the displeasure of baring witness to these brutal displays of combat study already. It made her sick. There had to be other ways to collect data, to study the predatory effectiveness of the mutants, right?

The poor pitiful souls that were hauled from their holding cells hardly protested, only mildly irritated it seemed. For these creatures, this never ended unless it ended in death. Their agony always eventually numbed and all the tortures became mundane. They started to laugh at their captors, which pushed the scientists and guards to invent new games to play with them, but the mutants never were impressed. Arguably the worst part of their existence had to be the boredom, the pain became so unreal, but the routine was always the same. Max believed that was the genius of the torture, the repetition of it. It must of been like waiting in line and every time they made it to the front, they got thrown to the back like a domino.

Max turned to Olek and grimaced. "I'm going to go...watch." She confessed, nerves rattled but maintaining her composure. "They might need an extra set of hands if any of these guy's try something...it can get pretty violent-they panic and-" She let her words trail off into implication, he knew the lengths some of these mutants might go to to try and escape, to avoid their inevitable death. Anyone would, human and mutant alike.

Kisa

There were things going on around her, and yet, Kisa could only think of food. She was drooling by the time they got to her cell, and... Finally! Unperturbed by the sight of dead fish, mixed in with... Leftover Mutant parts? She hesitated when she saw the human hand and what look looked to be the head of a mutated head of a bird. She was frozen only for a second, and yet, the battle in her head felt like it took forever. In the end, the hungry jaguar won.

She forcibly let go of her humanity, embracing the predator side of herself and threw herself at the pile of food. She tore it apart, scattering the fish in her cell, and ate the smaller fish whole, gulping them down. In not time at all, the fish--and the mutant parts-- was gone. She licked her lips, and her skin seemed to move like a ripple in the water and then her fur fell off in clumps and patches to reveal human skin. Her skull, shoulders and hips, cracking as if breaking. This was the part when she moaned in agony, feeling the pain of her skeleton changing, her bones breaking themselves apart to reattach at certain places, shrinking and twisting themselves to form her human skeleton. Her muscles either tearing or shrinking, both actions causing her to moan a bit louder. The transformation from Jaguar to Human, hurt more than it did to change from Human to Jaguar... and it always took longer.

When the transformation ended, Kisa was naked and cold. She didn't mind it, and she didn't care. It was something she got over along time ago, but still, without a fur coat she quickly changed into her clothes.

When that was done, she realized that she felt satisfied... for the moment... She growled at herself for deciding to go human, as she just noticed that Dray and Hawke were being taken to the arena for the Games. Being in her weakest form while the games were going on, was definitely NOT a comforting idea. Despite that, she stayed in her human form and continued her pacing.

Olek:

"I'm going to go...watch. They might need an extra set of hands if any of these guy's try something...it can get pretty violent-they panic and-" After Bast got done speaking Olek paused for a few moments, his face giving nothing away. He simply nodded his head and continued standing in the same spot. "I'll cover here for you."He said in his low and booming voice. Bast had her reasons, Olek had no right to judge really. Having concern for a couple of people wasn't exactly a damning quality.

There really was no point for both of them to stay on watch. Olek usually got put on shifts by himself, mainly because he didn't play very nicely with others. He made a mental note to keep a close eye on the jaguar woman, Kisa. She was notoriously animalistic, being locked up and tortured one's whole life would do that to most. Should the woman get out of her cage, Olek wouldn't last long. The other mutants in this cell block didn't really bother him much. He always rested his hand on his sidearm whilst doing periodic scans of the the cell block. He'd occasionally leave his usual position to patrol across the whole cell block.

Most of the guards left to watch the bloodbath, so he made a point to be extra careful of the prisoners. It was a short patrol, as there were only three or so mutants remaining under Olek's care. He rarely ever talked to the prisoners, as it wasn't good for business. Becoming attached to any of these people would spell disaster for Olek. He couldn't but help to note how young two of the mutants in the cell block were. Chris, Edur, and Kisa were the last remaining. His combat boots continued to echo across the dead halls as he remained vigilant and on the move.

His mind eventually drifted to the early hours of the morning when he was reading his diagnostics report. He could feel his black heart sinking the more he thought about it. After a feel moments a rattling cough wracked Olek's body, the first for today. After a few moments he kept his patrol going, still feeling slightly sick whenever he heard the jeering guards from across the facility.

Edur watched the two unfortunate mutants being dragged away in pity. If the Games were pushed up this early, one, or both of them had done something to piss the higher ups off. And what ever it was, it must of been bad.

Still Edur couldn't help but sigh in relief with it not being her chosen. She wouldn't stand a chance against either Dray or Hawke in The Games. The two of them were older, stronger, and Edur hated bringing herself to harm another mutant.

Feeling sick Edur slid down the wall of her cell, unable to eat the food that was given to her. The excited yells coming from the guards watching the Games was loud and echoed in her ears. Instead Edur settled for watching the interesting guard stalk up and down the cell block. He stopped in a coughing fit which caused her ears to raise in surprised and slight concern but they lowered quickly when his pace continued sturdy as before.

Olek:

Olek rubbed his right wrist as the cheers echoed the halls. After a few moments he quickly let go as it wasn't helping his already aching joint. His right hand dove into his pocket after a few moments. He rubbed the folded piece of paper between his thumb and index finger. He gave the slighted hint of a sigh when his fingers brushed against the keys in his pocket. The the cells with lower security still used keys. Maximum security required key cards. Some cells had both, he glanced over at Edur's cell whilst he circled past it. He noted the fact that she hadn't touched her food. With his right hand still in his pocket he wrapped his hand around the keys. He pursed his lips together before slowly letting his fingers uncurl. As he did so a small voice spoke in his head. Is that how you want to remembered? The guy who locked kids in cages. He shook his head and pushed those thoughts away.

Confronting his own mortality had given rise to many troubled thoughts. With a paycheck as big as his, he figured the higher-ups wouldn't just let him go just because of a cough, they wouldn't let an asset go that could train future guards. Lord knew those were getting hard to come by these days. He calmly stopped outside of Edur's cell. In all of Olek's years within this facility he never really made small talk with prisoners. He calmly stared at the tiny child before him with unreadable eyes. After a few uncomfortable moments he finally spoke up. He knelt down next to Edur's cell just out of her reach. Whilst at eye level with her, he got a better look at her eyes with his. "You should eat." He said in a surprisingly gentle voice. Usually Olek's voice was rough, low, and menacing. Strangely enough Olek attempted to make his voice feel warm and encouraging. His pale complexion mixed with his other features made Olek a menacing man, he hoped it wouldn't work against him this time.

The cheering got louder which could only mean one thing, the Games had begun. Hawke and Dray fought for their lives and Edur couldn't help but wonder which of them would be lead back, or if they would even make it. Maybe the two of them would kill the other. Both were strong, it seemed possible. Or maybe they faced another foe, one too tough for them. Edur hoped not. If they survived this long, they deserved a chance to make it out of every Game they faced.

Distracted by the fear of neither mutant making it back Edur didn't notice the interesting man until he spoke. 'You should eat.' He said in a tone Edur didn't think possible of a man with his job. This was surprising. A guard speaking to a prisoner for something that didn't lead them to testing was new. But even more so Edur was shocked by the gentle, if a bit forced, voice that came from him.

She gazed at the food for a moment before picking up what seemed to be a mangled mouse. Even if she wasn't hungry, a guard gave a a vague suggestion, or order depending on how you saw it, and Edur knew better then to disobey. And she liked this interesting guard. He seemed slightly different despite his scary appearance.

Chris sat in his cell quietly full and content from his meal. However once he heard the cheers and chants grow louder he cringed slightly. He didn't want to think to much about Hawk and Dray, whether one of them would be lead back into their cells or if they'd die in the games. He pushed those thoughts to the back of his mind though, he had heard that both were fairly strong in thier own right, he was sure that at least one of them would survive.

He decided to just focus on the guard outside the cells and once again the guard surprised him. "You should eat." The guard spoke far gentler than his appearance would suggest. In all of his years stuck in this place he'd never heard a guard speak so kindly to a mutant. Perhaps this one actually cared for the people trapped in here?

Soon after he heard another voice this one coming from one of the other mutants though it was far less kind than the guards."Obedient, feeble and puny cub.Why do you obey him? Don't you think, that the White Coats could be tired of you... And that instead of putting in you the Games, they could just poison you and have a supposedly nice guard command you to eat it." Chris recognized the voice of this mutant. She seemed much more animalistic than some of the others and whenever he saw or heard her interacting with others she was often very mean and blunt. As if she aimed to hurt you with her words. "I wouldn't listen to her. If they wanted you dead I doubt they'd poison you. It isn't very entertaining for them after all. I'm sure the food's fine really." He spoke to Edur loudly so she could hear him and as kindly as possible. He thought he should speak up, after all Edur was a mutant and has been through a lot just like all the others. As a fellow mutant Chris thought he should try and help her at least a little bit. If the mutants didn't look out for each other who else would?

Max approached the melee with caution, it was irrelevant that she--along with all the other nonprisoners, scientists and guards alike--were safely advantaged up on the catwalk-like upper level, watching the bloodshed below. Her caution was not born out of fear of the transgenics battling it under her feet, but her 'comrades' filling in at her side. On her left stood a severe-looking woman with a pinched nose and jet black hair cut very close to the scalp. Her eyes were sharp and hard, filled with a pitiless intellect. There was no compassion, no mercy in that cold gaze. She was donned in a freshly pressed white labcoat and scrawled down notes on a clipboard, presumably taking some kind of tallied score.

To Max's right stood another guard. His light brown hair was short and neatly trimmed. His face was bland, neither plain nor handsome, but there was a hardness to his clear blue eyes that spoiled the illusion. This was no fresh-faced kid right out of college, for all that he looked the part. Life had hardened him already; worn away the soft edges until there was nothing left inside but his fanatical desire to prolong the suffering of others he saw as less human than he. He was dressed all in black. Black cargo pants, clingy black long-sleeved turtleneck, black Kevlar vest, black utility belt, black weapons-he bristled with weapons. Everything was black, right down to his belt buckle. Outwardly, he didn't look totally unlike Max herself....‘Commando Barbie and Assassin Ken,’ Max thought mockingly. ‘Set comes with body armor and assorted weapons. Army sold separately.’

“The animals will never go back on the leash,” The woman, the scientist, informed Assassin Ken confidently, obviously continuing a conversation Max had missed the beginning of. “They’ve broken their conditioning. They can no longer be controlled by their handlers. Therefore we cannot trust them. We have no choice now but to clean house.” He raised his M16A2 Rifle he had cradled between his hands. "Wouldn't this just be much easier?" He asked, finger itching to take the trigger. The scientist shook her head. "Perhaps, but nothing can be learned that way. Besides, do you not enjoy the games? I know you must, you've seen just about every one." His returning reply was a wicked and malicious grin. "The only problem with your games is you don't let the guards participate..." His gaze fell on Max in between them who kept her eyes trained forward. "What do you think, Rookie? Would you sign on to play the games? You're like part freak yourself, right?" She shrugged, faking a nonchalance she didn’t feel. She pulled her usual sardonic mask over her features like a blackout curtain and stiffened her spine, both figuratively and literally. She was a soldier; she would not flinch from a figurative firing squad. "I'd only play if they pitted me against you, but that wouldn't really be much of a challenge." He sneered as she turned heel and left the arena, she could stomach no more of the violent display nor the onlookers whooping and cheering, or simply looking down on the mutants with indifference.

Once out in the hall, she began to pace--her stalking looking decided catlike. She was going to Hell for sure. How could she allow for this to go on? A little voice inside her head took the bait and began to argue, playing devil's advocate. Allow? It's not like I'm in control here. There is nothing I can do to stop it. Her conscience battled back. Really, nothing? Are you sure or simply too scared to try? Max's jaw hardened with resolution. Ah Hell. She snapped. Max raced down the empty corridor, headless of the creatures looking on curiously from their cages. There was not another guard in sight, and that boded well for her plan. She banked a hard right and found herself in standing in front of a door that lead down into the bowls of this place, where the boiler room and generators hid. It was completely unguarded, which really if you thought about it, was rather cocky of them seeing that most of the cages were electronically locked and if they lost power, the cages would pop right open. Disastrous.

ImageMax swung open the door and peered inside to see a narrow spiral staircase that led down into pitch black. The stairwell was made of meshed metal so she could see through the steps to the floor below. She made her decent hastily, sure to pull the door closed behind her as she went, enveloping her in total darkness. It sure was a good thing she had night-vision, she thought idly as she found the bottom floor. Walls were lined with generators and back up generators in case a rolling power outage struck. She'd have to flip them all. The switches themselves were huge, not something pre-mutated Max probably could have tackled alone, but she was stronger now and she, one by one, systematically threw the heavy levers down, not giving herself anytime to think through the repercussions of her actions if she was caught or even what came next. Once finished, she envisioned the panic that must have been ensuing upstairs in the black, cages creaking open, mutants set loose. They'd figure out what went wrong soon enough, so she raised her gun and proceeded back up to face the music. It was time to make an escape.

Olek's eyes once again hardened when Kisa spoke up, trying to tell Edur of plots to poison her. His hands balled up into fists as he started stalking towards Kisa's cell whilst she threw a dead fish out of her cell. She started slamming against the bars, they groaned under her force as she yowled and snarled. Olek stood just within her reach, giving her an intense glare, almost daring her to hit him. Olek never spoke, he just gazed at Kisa with an intensity he himself hadn't thought possible. His balled up fists unclenched when Chris began to speak. "I wouldn't listen to her. If they wanted you dead I doubt they'd poison you. It isn't very entertaining for them after all. I'm sure the food's fine really."

Olek waltzed over to Chris' cell and gave him a nod of approval. He gave Kisa a feeling glance. Olek started to speak up until his chest was wracked by another coughing fit as he was walking back to Edur's cell. Olek wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, he looked at Edur, until the lights went out. He instantly ripped his gun out of it's holster, eerie red lights illuminated the halls. The electronic locks went out but the key locks in cell block A would hold. He made a split second decision. He reached into his pocket and pulled the jangling key ring out of his pocket. They can cure you, don't do this. A voice spoke in his head. He hesitated for a few moments. They might, anything seemed to be possible here. Olek's hands loosened around the key ring. He could just stand here. Do nothing. That's all he had to do to survive, to keep living. With fire in his eyes his right hand curled around the keys. We all gotta die someday. Olek conscience spoke up once more.

The pitter patter of feet filled the halls in the distance. Olek had no idea what was going on, but he had to utilize this opportunity. Olek wiped the sweat off of his feverish forehead. He looked down at Edur, then back to Chris. "This is how this is going to go down. If you three want to get out of here alive, do as I say." He barked the orders in a commanding voice. All of the kindness had disappeared. This was a serious situation, it called for a serious demeanor. He gave Edur a reassuring nod and unlocked her cell first. "Just stay behind me kiddo." He turned and looked Chris up and down, and unlocked his cell relatively quickly. "If we get separated, you're in charge." He spoke in a quick tone.

Olek stopped at Kisa's cell hesitating with his weapon. "Don't. Cause. Trouble." Olek's expression grew grave and dark. The idea of having a 600 pound Jaguar at his back proved to be very unsettling. He unlocked Kisa's cell and backed up, giving her a wide birth. He quickly went through the lay out of the building in his head. They would have to take the quickest way out. Opposite direction of the arena. They'd have to pass the sub basement, guards would be swarming towards the generators. If they hurried, they could slip past without notice. It would be a straight shot past the doors.

"Follow me, don't stop for anything." Olek advised as he started sprinting down one of the halls, he gave the occasional glance back with his hands firmly wrapped around his gun. If any guards were tailing them, they would meet a quick end They could make it, they had to make it. His ear piece crackled to life and multiple voices immediately began barking orders. Olek had all of the information he needed. He could avoid the deployments so long as he was careful. There goes my paycheck.

Edur dropped the mouse as if would lunge out at her and sent a panicky look to the guard. She didn't want to believe it, but these guard could do anything. Kisa began to shake the bars of her cell, yowling the whole time. Edur shakily stood, turning her head to watch Chris speak. "I wouldn't listen to her. If they wanted you dead I doubt they'd poison you. It isn't very entertaining for them after all. I'm sure the food's fine really." Comforted by his words she sent him a small smile and returned to watching the interesting guard.

He broke into a coughing fit outside her cell and Edur gripped the bar, pressing her face to them to get a better look. Soon he quieted down, and she opened her mouth to perhaps thank him or ask why he coughed so much when the lights went out. Her gripped tighten and she let out a tiny shocked whimper. Luckily Edur could see well in the darkness. The guard seemed to struggle in deciding something before gazing at her and Chris. "This is how this is going to go down. If you three want to get out of here alive, do as I say." She took a step back in shock as he unlocked her cell.

Edur walked shakily out, keeping close to the guard as he unlocked both Chris's and Kisa's cell. She didn't trust the woman. Not one bit. Edur stood slightly behind Chris as the woman was released, and took off at once as the guard left. She didn't want to get too far from him or even Chris and be left with Kisa.

Chris looked at Edur for a moment after he first spoke and saw the small smile she gave him. He blushed slightly and smiled back at her. He was glad he could comfort her somewhat but he also felt embarrassed for some reason. He then turned his gaze back onto the guard as he was suffering from another coughing fit. He seemed to be sick and to his surprise Chris found himself feeling a little worried for the guard. This one actually cared for the mutants and he would hate to see something happen to him.

When the lights went out Chris instictivly backed away from the cell bars. He was startled and wasn't excatly sure what was going on but whatever's going on could be dangerous. To his delight the hall became illuminated in red lights, when the guard looked back at him and began to speak."This is how this is going to go down. If you three want to get out of here alive, do as I say." Chris stared at the guard awestruck as he began to unlock Edur's cell.

When the guard started unlocking his cell he could barely contain his excitement his tail actually started wagging in sheer joy. When his cell was finally open and the guard proclaimed him to be in charge if they got separated he nodded excitedly and ran out of the cell as fast as he could. It was finally happening! He was out of that cell and he had a chance to be free, maybe even see the outside again! He quickly followed the guard down the hall keeping a close eye on Edur and the guard as he ran, he couldn't wait yo finally get out of here for good!

Hawke

Hawke relaxed only slightly as Dray nodded, getting rid of the giant's blood that smeared the dragon's snout. He'd been about to take off running again when he found himself on Dray's back. He pointed out clear pathways as the dragon ran, his own ears catching even the faintest of the guards' voices. As they got closer to the door, he became confused; the guard he had talked to earlier was headed toward them from another hall. He could hear the footsteps, too heavy for any of the mutants this way, but not quite so heavy as the other guards'. With him were at least two others, these mutants. He tapped on one of Dray's scales.

"Someone's coming. I think it's Guard Barrow. He's got others with him, not guards. Think he might be helping?" It seemed stupid to him for one of the guards, one of the two kinds of people here mutants desperately wanted to get away from, to be helping. Perhaps this was that mysterious "Oh Lord's" work once more. Or more likely mere coincidence.... Without waiting for the Dragon to answer, He called out, as quietly as he could while still being heard.

"'Hoy, Barrow!"

Aileen

"There we go... See? Good as new." Aileen smiled at the little girl she'd stumbled upon. The sweet kid had tripped and scraped her knee, not enough to bleed although a thin layer of skin had been shredded away and her jeans had ripped. That hadn't mattered to the girl though; she'd wailed like it was the end of the world. Aileen had taken her to a bench and gave it a quick "cleaning" with her bottle of water, making quick and easy work of the minor cut. She glanced around and found a woman hurrying toward them: the girl's mother. With a smile, she pointed her out to the girl, who took off running like nothing had happened. As they left, she retied her hair and picked up her bag. She was supposed to help out at a clinic today; if it weren't for her ability, she'd be in school like she'd first planned. But even the safest hospitals and med schools were dangerous. She had to tread carefully, couldn't reveal herself out right. That'd be too great a risk, she'd be too easy to find that way. With a longing sigh, she kept walking. You'll find a way to help soon. Grandmother did, you just have to be patient. She and Grandfather told you everything you needed to know. Why they did it so close to death, I don't know. Maybe to protect me...? If so... From what? She didn't understand what was so dangerous about using her ability, about helping people with it. It was just good she also knew "normal" methods....

She was so lost in thought, she smacked right into a pole.

Olek:

Olek trudged through the hall with his pistol forward and his rifle slung onto his back. Close quarters with an assault rifle generally wasn't a good idea unless you were approaching a long hall. Corners were perfect for one's sidearm. Once he was pressed up against the turn in the hall, he poked his head around the corner. "Hoy, Barrow!" a voice called to him further down the hall from around the corner. He picked the voice out as Hawke's. He was just about to turn the corner to give them the same speech he had given the three escapees behind himself. Before he could, he heard another very familiar voice. "You two, with me. We are getting the fuck out of this Hell hole. Exit's this way." Bast.

In a weird way, it didn't surprise him that she was pulling this stunt too. Olek tapped his pistol against the side of his head. He had to make the decision to trust her here and now. It was either going to end with all of them walking out, or one less flipped guard walking out. There simply was no scenario where there was an in-between. He cursed under his breath and prepared to leave the safety of his cover.

Olek put his sidearm into his holster, and proceeded to pull out his rifle. "If for whatever reason bullets start flying in these halls, get to the ground." Olek growled as he turned the corner with his rifle ready. "I'll cover your retreat. Head to Bast, and the other two people with her. I'll be right behind the three of you." Now on the other side of the corner, and within eyesight of Bast. He switched his radio to close proximity frequency, opening up a private channel with Bast's ear piece. "Not much time to explain, get the others out of the perimeter. You cover the front, I'll cover the back." He spoke quickly yet strangely in a calm tone at the same time.

The guard should be entering cell block A right about now. They'd be aware of the doors that were opened and would put two and two together rather quickly. He had his rifle ready, the first guard that showed up behind the group was going to have a bad day. Olek occasionally glanced back whilst back peddling behind the group.

Excitement coursed through Edur, although she couldn't help but feel a twinge of fear in the thought of escape. She was glad Chris and the guard were here, as she knew she would never attempt this herself. Bouncing on the balls of her feet she heard another voice, Hawke's she realized. The guard look ready to order them to join their little escapee group when another voice rang out. After a few seconds of pondering she recognized it as the woman guard.

The guard turned the corner, his larger weapon out. "If for whatever reason bullets start flying in these halls, get to the ground. I'll cover your retreat. Head to Bast, and the other two people with her. I'll be right behind the three of you." At those words all aspects of excitement flew from Edur and the fear grew. Her heart beating fast she grabbed Chris's arm, leaning into him.

"Chris..." She said in a tiny voice, taking small steps towards what could be freedom. "Are we gonna make it out?" Every few seconds she glance back at the guard, wondering if he'd have to shoot the other guys. And more importantly, why was he doing this. And did the woman guard wanna help them? It seemed so the way she took charge of Hawke and Dray. But it still didn't calm the fear in Edur's chest.

As they sped down the halls Chris couldn't hide his excitement! He had a large grin plastered on his face and his tail refused to stay still as it wagged from side to side, he just couldn't wait to leave. Though underneath his excitement stood a level of alertness. As much as he wanted to leave they were in a dangerous situation and despite all appearances Chris was ready just in case. He'd have to be if any of the other guards found them. He'd have to be if he wanted to protect Edur. Though the guard and Kisa seemed like they could handle themselves in danger Edur seemed to be more timid, and he wasn't sure how she'd handle any fights they might run into. As he ran he heard Hawk's voice and realized that he must have escaped hopefully with Dray. A wave of relief washed over him especially when the guard seemed to be ready to bring them into their little breakout attempt, until another voice spoke out. It must be the female guard.

As the guard turned the corner he had his larger weapon out and spoke."If for whatever reason bullets start flying in these halls, get to the ground. I'll cover your retreat. Head to Bast, and the other two people with her. I'll be right behind the three of you." When he spoke these words only served to make Chris even more alert but Edur started grabbing his arm and leaned into him as she began to speak. "Chris...Are we gonna make it out?" He looked back at her a little surprised
and slightly embarrassed. She hadn't spoken much and he wasn't really expecting to hear a word from her much less directed towards him."Um make it out? Y-yeah of course." He was rather nervous but he didn't want her mistaking it for uncertainty or doubt ,so he tried to speak confidently and assuredly."We have to make it out, but we need to keep moving. We've made it this far, we just need to go a little further. We're going to make it out, just stay close to me and move quickly and you'll be fine I promise." He started moving towards Bast as quickly as he could, all the while guiding Edur beside him as gently as possible, while still moving quickly.

"Not much time to explain, get the others out of the perimeter. You cover the front, I'll cover the back." Olek's voice resounded in her ear, calmly delving out commands, causing her blood to run cold--to turn into a thick syrupy slow molasses in her veins. It wasn't until she realized he was giving orders solely to her through private line of communication, and that he was aiding their escape, that she dared to breathe. A cat’s heart beat nearly twice as fast as a human's heart, at 110 to 140 beats a minute. Hers must have been doing double that.

"Affirmative, moving out." She replied with a voice steady enough to rival his own, veiling her consternation. Max feared the worst being told to take the lead where a mutant could opt to gnaw on her shoulder if it felt so inclined, or Olek could place a well-meant bullet right in the back of her head, and she'd of been powerless to stop him...but she had to trust they were all on the same side. In truth, it was probably for the best she was the head to the spear, leading them toward the exit. She could hear high-frequency sounds up to two octaves higher than most of her counterparts, and that came in handy when it was time to pick the safest route, go for the hall with the least howling mutants and screaming guards.

She felt totally encapsulated in the miserable deluges of a feral mindset. Escape escape escape--she repeated the mantra in her head until it turned rhythmic. Outwardly though, she slinked with movement's that were elegant, swift, simple, and purposeful--those of a predator. Her lean, seemingly fragile body was deceptively strong, like a reed that could not be broken. A pliant pillar that did not rattle with fright.

The narrow corridors were luridly illuminated by the intermittently placed caged red emergency lights, the shadows that shrouded every corner crept up on them like prowling wolves, threatening to swallow them whole with wicked and malicious grins upon their large maw's. For all Max knew, the Shadows really did hold wolves, well wolf mutant hybrids anyway. She shook off the errant thought with a flood of relief as their exit came into view. "Okay guys, we're-" She started before out of no where, a reptilian mutant dropped down on her from the ceiling where it was lying in wait for it's next hapless victim. They were no more than ten feet shy of the exit.

Dray
Image
Dray stayed in place as things were going on around them. Hawke had called out to Barrow. He didn't know if that was a good idea or not considering he was a guard known to put his job first despite being kind to mutants when he wanted. Although from the smell and sound, he had a few of the mutants with him that were in their hallway when they had left. They came around the corner and he counted four. There was Barrow, and the three mutants. They were headed towards them when the female showed up behind he and Hawke.
In a matter of moments and a few quick words their little group was herded along between the two guards. It made him uncomfortable since either of them could turn and shoot them all down. There was no telling what the guards planned. He had heard a few times when guards pretended to be nice and then got an entire group of mutants sent to harsh experiments when they got caught breaking rules. The new female seemed nicer than others he had met, but the male he was unsure about. He took the back and had easy access to taking them out one by one.
Despite those cautions running through his mind he followed Bast down the hallways. The red light was almost a foreshadowing of what was to come, like the perfect environment for anything, something, to go wrong. No sooner than when the exit door was in sight did a free mutant jump out and attack Bast. The reptile landed on her, flying out from the shadows. It could have come from one of the high secured cells or been let out by a guard in order to attack those in the area.
No matter the reason, in his current form, the animal part of Dray's mind took precedent. The sudden movement caught his attention and immediately he let out a loud growl. His muscles bunched up and he leaped towards the mutant that came from the shadows. It forced Bast to the ground before he got there. However, in a few quick moments he crashed his head into the other mutant's side, sending it crashing into the nearest wall. Without thinking about possible approaching guards he let out a roar at the reptile, body positioned over Bast protectively.

Olek

Olek continued to back pedal, staying a good distance away from the group. After a while he gave up on the idea of facing the rear constantly. He had to turn and run after the group to keep up due to their rapid pace. Bast was making good time, she circumnavigated many guard patrols in the process. Olek was heavily impressed, he would've commended her if their lives weren't involved in impending danger.

Soon enough they reached a t-intersection, with the exit in sight. Olek took position at the intersection. He'd wait for Bast to clear the exit before he followed. His eyes vigilantly scanned the hall that ran to his left and right. Olek heard commotion behind him, he quickly glanced over his shoulder to see Dray ripping a mutant off of Bast. He gave a quick nod, and turned back as a loud roar echoed from behind him presumably from Dray.

Almost as if in response to the fierce roar, three guards toting assault rifles came sprinting around the right corner of the right most hall way. Olek cursed under his breath and waited for them to reach a point of no return midway through the hall. "We've got company." Olek's voice rumbled to Bast via his radio. He switched his rifle to single fire, and poked half of his body around the corner in a standing firing position.

The kick from his gun was welcomed as the stock from his gun jumped ever so slightly into his left shoulder. He squeezed off two rounds that connected with the first guard. The first impacted his collar bone just above his bullet proof vest, and the second grazed his cheek. With guard number one dispatched the other two began raising their guns with lightning like reflexes. Olek set his sights on the second guard in almost a fraction of a second. He fired two more bullets, tearing into the guards throat. Olek swiveled his barrel towards guard number three. The guard managed to spray Olek's location with a few bullets. The most of the bullets went screaming over Olek's left shoulder. Loud snapping filled Olek's ears as each bullet hurtled past his position. One bullet made its way into Olek's vest, knocking the wind out of him, almost at the same time Olek fired a bullet that made its way through the enemy guard's helmet. Olek immediately grasped where the bullet made its mark.

Olek returned to the safety his original position and felt around on his chest for blood. Weezing ever so slightly, Olek pinpointed where the round had hit. It was located on the lower left part of his abdomen. Pain lanced across his side when he put slight pressure on the vest. Luckily for Olek, the bullet was still embedded in his vest without any signs of entry. The bullet burnt Olek's right thumb and pointer finger as he pried it off of his vest. He went through the motions, straining his ears to hear footsteps over the roaring and gunfire in the distance. The adrenaline blocked out the pain coursing through his abdomen, his vision tunneled on two guards that rounded the corner of the left hall way. Immediately, Olek raised his gun and once more poked half of his body into the line of fire. He squeezed off two more bullets for each guard. They fell quickly, and without so much as a peep. Olek let out a deep breath he had been holding in for a handful of moments. They were clear for now. They weren't out of the woods though. Not by a long shot.

With his ears still ringing and his head pounding, Olek leaned against the wall lightly coughing for a few moments. His good eye continued to scan the halls. The group was ten feet from the door. They'd be outside in a few moments. Olek figured he took out the group that was tasked with locking down the front entrance. He began to fall back with his gun still trained on the t-intersection. They would be out before any guards could reach his previous position.

When the woman guard had gone down, Edur let out a panicked squeak and clung tighter to Chris. The reptile mutant looked ready to rip her apart, and probably would of it Dray didn't tackle it, sending it across the room. He roared impressively loud and Edur had no time to be in awe of him before three guards came after them.

The interesting guard looked ready for them, selecting his gun and taking aim the moment the three guards came round. He took one down easily, although Edur couldn't help but wrinkle her nose at the blood which came from the dead man. The remaning guards raised their guns, shooting out before one was dead on the ground. The interesting guard fired again, hitting the remaining man whilst letting out a pained gasp.

He returned round the corner and Edur could see him pry a bullet from his vest. He was clearly hurt but it didn't stop him from shooting two more unlucky guards that came by. After a few seconds Edur knew no more guards would come, at least for a little while. She released Chris's arm, wanting to step towards the guard but halted knowing no wasn't the time. Instead she turned back towards the door which was teasingly close. Out that door was freedom, was the outside.

Suddenly Edur felt very small. She had never seen the outside before as she was born here. All her knowledge of it came from listening in on chatty guards, or other mutant who had come from there. She wondered what it would be like. Would the people except them? Or would her fur scare them away. Edur didn't wanna scare people away. Nor did she want to be left alone. She honestly had no idea what to do once they got outside. Once again Edur stepped to Chris, wrapping around his arm for comfort.

Hawke glanced back briefly during Barrow's gunfight, moving backward toward the door. He looked up at Dray, then over at the door with a smile. He grabbed Bast's arm to help her up, cautious hope in his eyes. Some fear, and a warning as well. Don't give me reason to hurt you. The same warning was almost a plea as he watched the other mutants.

"If we don't move now we'll all get caught." He spoke to the mutants more than to Barrow, who kept his weapon toward the way they'd come. If Hawke could get to the door first, he could call up some of the forest locals with his gift. But he had to be in range; this far in all they'd get was confused. So instead he took a place between Barrow and the others. "Dray, keep up front with Guard Bast. We don't know if there's anyone waiting outside to force us back in." That was his one fear regarding this event: that they'd be captured before he could see the world again."If there are surprises, you being out first will be our best bet to tip things in our favor..." He hated that thought, but it was truth. They were probably expecting mostly the terrified and sneaky, not a giant dragon coming at them, outweighing them quite heavily.

Hoping the others could hold their own also, he backed up at Barrow's pace, keeping a few steps between them so he wasn't run over.

Kisa

"If there are surprises, you being out first will be our best bet to tip things in our favor..." Kisa had stayed silent and did not take part in any of the violence going on around her. Restraining the urge to shift into her Jaguar form was awfully stifling, discomforting, difficult, especially when she wanted to be in her strongest form. Despite that, she did her best to stay in her human form knowing that it would be a challenge to restrain herself once she went into a battle frenzy. It wouldn't be so hard to turn on her fellow mutants and forget Freedom was only a few feet away..

Kisa concentrated, and for the first in her life, fought back the red threatening to overtake her vision. Her hands started began to shake, and the red invaded, took her sight. Made her see red. Made her see prey and not people. She let out a tiny growl and grabbed her left forearm with her right hand, holding them to her stomach. Her own claws dug into her forearm, cutting into her flesh. Blood spilled, and she ignored the pain, a snarl ready to rip itself and the Jaguar in her, out. Control. Control. Control. Control. The mantra slipped into her head, as she felt the red subside a little.

Max hadn't a moment to react before the mutant was torn off of her and slung backward into a wall. The red haired boy, Dray, she believed he called himself, hovered over her protectively--the most terrifying sound Max had ever heard--erupting from in between his sharpened teeth. She laid there, still as a statue, momentarily forgetting her surroundings or to even breathe. This was not out of fear, but shock. She hadn't even time to vex herself over the fact she had failed to sense her attacker coming. Dray, who day in and day out had remained locked in a cell largely in part because of her had just selflessly fought to protect her instead of climbing over her still warm corpse to freedom. She wouldn't have blamed him if he had.

Coming to her senses, her head snapped over to Barrow, hoping he had just witnessed what she had; but he was preoccupied with his own battle, remorselessly emptying a round into their coworkers with no caveat. That harsh report echoed cacophonously within the confines of the hall way, nearly deafening her sensitive ears. Flickering fluorescent lights, red bulbs broken and shattered by gunfire, created a strobe effect that only added to the bizarre, nightmarish ambience of the hellish drama playing out.

Gavin-or was it Hawke now?-hauled her to her feet, already trying to assume a leadership role by giving out a new set of orders. She jerked her arm back away from him, feeling suddenly weak for having been taken down with such ease, needing the 'men folk' to come to her rescue. "I'm fine, I don't need your help." She spat like an ornery house cat in protest. "Lets get the fuck out of here." She didn't wait for Dray to take the lead of the line with her or for Barrow to rejoin the group, she was not letting herself be demoted or paired with a partner. She had too much pride.

She pulled the riffle off of her back and trained it forward, she didn't want any more surprises until they hit the tree line and her military issue M-16 had a scope that was preferred if they were going to be outside in the open. She kicked open the door, and lead the way, All around them a blistering hail of automatic weapons fire echoed, the relentless fusillade paired with mangled screams of those trying to escape. Max bared a set of fangs, exposing a mouthful of serrated canines and incisors, an atavistic hiss escaping her lips. Mutated bodies littered the lawn, surrounded by pools of clotting blood. Many of the human soldiers still clutched their formidable-looking guns in their lifeless hands. Chipped brick, bullet shells, and shattered glass added to all the clutter. It was that broken glass that crunched beneath the soles of Max's combat boots with a sound like the breaking of bones as she advanced onward.

ImageAround the compound was a high razor wire fence, more portentous than anything you'd see wrapping around a human prison. It was at that point that most of the mutants were being mowed down. They simply couldn't escape the bullets raining down from the guard towers long enough to clear the barrier. It was a reminder that in that hour, she could have found the tenacious dream of freedom smashed to pieces. "Shit. Dray, You can fly right? You think you could clear out a guard tower?"
