Janinee first thought when she woke up that morning was "I might die today" then she though, she did cheat death once, why not try and do it again. She had come to trust her crew mates, and they did "little brother" her a bit, even if they at times weren't that nice to her, and had they known that fourteen year old Jamie really was nineteen year old Janinee, they probably would be as trustworthy. She got out of her hammock and threw on her large vest. She had made a thick leather belt that she had tied over her chest to make it more flat, and never took of her shirt or pants when she slept. Knowing that they were going to battle that day, she threw on large coat she'd had to cut off in most directions to make it fit. It made a faint clattering sounds, waking one of the men up. He looked at her "coins!" he declared. Jaininee shook her head "knives" she explained, displaying the impressive "armory" she had created inside the coat. All the knives was stolen, she had everything from hunting knives to butter knives, elleven in total. She moved them over to the west and leather ties around her ankles "gonna stab yerself at yer clothes" the man muttered, getting back to sleep.

Janie head upstairs to the top deck, awaiting orders for the day. Posing as a fourteen year old was one of the smarter things she could have done. I addition to not having to make her voice sound manly, she was often put to climb the masts and sails to repair knots, and she just loved it, getting up there. When she was done with the check up rounds, she found herself the right sailer to rapport to before helping out with the preparations. She was always triple checking her work, not because she was afraid of the pain of punishment, she had been beaten a number of times before, but because it could mean having her shirt removed if they decided to go for her back.

She was distracted in her work as a woman was dragged from underneath the boat. She went over to look at the comotion, her heart sank, thinking about what they were gonna do to the poor lady. As it turned out, hire her. She had a strong feeling she wouldn't be treated with the same luxury if ever exposed, but she had no intentions of that ever happening either.

Janie had been back at her chores for a while when a sudden noise spooked her, the whole crew rushed over to see what was going on and she quickly climbed the mast a few steps to get a better look. The sight that met her was puzzling, illogical, and there was offered no explanation before the command "to arms" was shouted. She ran over to the armory, getting there pretty early with her head start jumping from the mast, but was pushed out of the way by two bigger men before getting her weapons "welcome aboard miss" she grinned in her darkest voice as she stumbled when pushed, before running over to a pole, taking cover behind it and readying herself to fire.

The last thing she would be able to clearly remember, was the captain screaming "FIRE". Everything after that was a blur of smoke, splinters, people smashing into eachother, the loud sounds of canons and guns, and absolute chaos. When the smoke cleared and her ears stopped ringing, the Vacca had sank. She put her hands up in the air with a big grin, a little uncertain why she was so happy about contributing to killing people. She then noticed blood on shirt, but quickly reasoned that it wasn't her, and realised there were injuries on their side as well. She looked bewildered around, wondering weather she should start binding wounds or stay called to arms.

The Kaiser Max was rounding a starboard turn several hundred feet beyond the Italian battle line where the destroyed Vacca had once stood. The maneuver had been successful the ship had broken off from the arrow formation to take out the Vacca and clear a path for their strike on the flagship Persano. The formation headed by Albini had done their part in the conspiracy against its countries navy and so they were not obligated to take part in any further acts of treason, what they did next was not something that had been contracted.

Albini had commanded his fleet of seven semi-armored vessels to attack and destroy the Varese and would ultimately succeed in that endeavor, after that they would make their way to Porto Comisa, ending their limited involvement in the battle. The vessels Castel, Ancona, Di Bruno and the Palestro had engaged the Austrian fleet, which resulted in the loss of Kommodor von Petz, who was decapitated by artillery, suffering heavy shelling the Austrians lost the entire right arm of their secondary V formation.

In all the Austrians would lose six vessels, the remaining Italian ships were heavily armored and did much damaged against the larger Austrian fleet. The Austrians still outnumbered the Italians with more then 10 vessels, to the five ships still remaining in the Italian fleet, the flagship Persano still remaining elusive.

The heavily armored vessels Kaiser Max and Persano are poised for a head to head showdown.

Rose had spent the entirety of the battle thus far running back and forth from the armory to the deck among the men, handing out supplies and making sure everyone had whatever they needed. She had had very little time to watch any of the action, busy running as she was. As simple as handing out supplies seemed, it was some of the hardest work Rose had ever done in her life. But she felt great doing it. It was nice to actually have a purpose for once. People needed her and she was only happy to oblige them.

There was tension in the air as the Kaiser Max came upon the Persano. Rose held her breath for a moment, watching as they neared the other ship.

"Move, seaman!" one of the men shouted as he pushed past her.

Rose jumped out of the way and quickly hurried back down to the armory where she wouldn't get herself into trouble, just as she had promised Nevel. As she headed back below the deck, she passed a boy who looked much too young to be in such a battle. She offered the boy a small smile, wondering how he'd gotten such a job, then waved and hurried on back to her own station.

Rose watched her brother communicate with the other captain, a sense of pride swelling in her chest. While she and the rest of the crew were panicking, he kept calm and negotiated with the other man. She watched as the five survivors considered the proposal, and let out a breath of relief when they agreed.

She carefully slid the sword back into her belt, her lips breaking into a a relieved smile. Nevel would have this ship up and running… somehow in no time. Of that she had no doubt. He was clearly a very able captain, and that day she adored him more than she ever had. She turned to the young boy who was at her side and gave him a light slap on the back before looking back to her brother.

"Put us to work, brother," she said softly, touching his arm. "We'll do whatever we must to get her working again."

Janie stepped backwards, backing into Rose as she saw men emerging from the shadows. She realised that they were alive, and scorned herself for believing that the dead could ever be more dangerous than living men

Things were exchanged in languages she didn't understand, before it seemed like they got to stay if the helped. As Rose slapped Janies back, she caughed loudly and stumbled forwards. She didn't hit her hard, but she seemed to be worse hurt than she first though.

As they got ordered to start clearing out debree, she went in line, going to the head of it. Seing all the dead was terriblie, and she was glad the was nothing in her stomach, it still twisted, but she was the smallest, and could get to a lot of things the bigger men following her couldn't. They were soon working as efficient as they could, her whole body was trembling, and everything felt heavier than it looked. She was used to strain and pain from her background, but it was still different, this wasn't the kind of pain where she could just close her eyes and bear it. She still, on many levels preferred this, she was in charged, and she was so covered in clothes she looked like a boy

An overwhelming sense of pride came over Nevel as he watched his sister snap into action, Rose had served as the inspiration for the other crew members to join in with removing the debris which barred the way to the lower decks.

In front positions within this assembly line of sailors was Rose and a young sailor that Nevel recognized as the former powder monkey for the Kaiser Max. He then remembered giving the order to his 1st mate to elevate the boy to the position of pole sitter, a logical decision, seeing as he was the lightest crew member and would be nimble enough to climb the length of each mast.

Nevel had never actually spoken to the young man, which was not all that uncommon for the captain of warship, whose crew was constantly shifting between engagements. But now, as Nevel stepped closer to the young saiolor a horrible realization bored its way into his mind. The youthful crewmen was in fact Janinee Lyontel, the offspring of his long dead brother and a common brothel wench. How could he have not known, how did anyone not know?

Nevel stood beside the first two members of the assembly line, both of whom were a relation of his, Nevel was about to speak the facts about the boy's origins, only to change his mind at the last moment. For now Nevel thought it best to keep the youths identity secret and to not inform Rose that the person just over her shoulder was a niece to them both.

Nevel had in fact kept Janinee's very existence a secret from his sister.

As far as Rose was concerned their brother had died many years ago and had never married nor fathered any children. All these concerns vanished however, as the sailors removed the last large fragment which had blocked their entry to the gun deck and levels below.

Nevel had everyone step aside as he ventured into the second level of the San Martino, what he had discovered was that a series of chambers had been created by giant steel slates from the Maria and Portogallo which had pierced the San Martino from above.

Rose was achingly sore by the time the majority of the debris had been cleared, but there was no time to rest. Not yet. She followed her brother down to the next level, her hand whipping up to her mouth and nose at the smell that was wafting up from below. How many dead men were down there? Were they all dead? Well, the had to be, of course. She wasn't sure how anyone could survive what had happened below with the steam engine.

She glanced backward to find the young lad behind her once more, apparently just as willing to give aid as Rose. She offered him a small smile, trying to life spirits even as the stench of death threatened to overwhelm them. He just seemed so young to be experiencing such horror. She let out a soft sigh and turned forward once more.

Rose reached out and touched the steel, frowning. "Now what?" she asked, looking to Nevel.

Nevel stood with his sister and their secret relation as the three starred at the steel obstacle which was embedded tightly into the bottom of the hull. They were fortunate that the metal hadn't pierced the hull completely.

"Well, We can't do much until we get some light down here so we can see what we're doing. There must be a chink in this armor plating somewhere, we just need to locate a breech between the steel fragment and the inner wall."

Nevel placed his hand on Rose' shoulder and told her to go back up and tell the men too make torches, so that they might have a source of light to work by. As she did this Nevel called the boy over to assist him in feeling along the surface of the steel panel for an opening.

"I know who you really are" Nevel whispered to the surprised sailor.

Janie's whole body ached and pained, her head was throbbing. She was happy about the sleep, but having her arms elevated and the rest of her body submerged in water had made the sleep very uncomfortable, and clearing a way to the steam engine didn't really help.

He followed Rose and the captain deeper into the chaimbers. She had smelled all other foul odour men could give off but death, and much closer, but this was by far the worse, and she was still extremely happy that she hadn't eaten, she'd end up sharing it all with the fish.

As the captain ordered Rose upstairs, Janie motioned to follow, but was instead called over to the captain. Even in all this terror, even through her tired indifference, a spark of unease flushed through her stomach, she always felt like that in a room alone with a man. As the captain said he knew who she was, her blood froze in her vains. She was a quick thinker, and a quicker liar, and quite the potent acress, so she grinned her best Jamie smile at the captain, sympatetic, Jamie probably thought the captain was tired or had hit his head "course cap'n, I'm Jamie Bucket, one of you men" she said with a shrug, glad to be passing as fourteen, ment she didn't have to alter her voice much, and the times she failed at it, it just sounded like a boy who was changing into a man's voice. She was not gonna give up on her act, he had no way of knowing, she had been extremely careful with undressing and dressing, no one had seen more of her skin than her hands and face after she took to being Jamie Bucket. She'd stuck with being a bastard, it made it more likely, the way she spoke and acted.

Nevel sensed that the person beside him, who at this point was obviously disguising themselves to hide their gender, wouldn't give up their deception easily.

"Okay then, since you refuse to own-up to the truth, I only ask that you not reveal your identity to Rose. I still have not forgiven my brother for what he did to our family all those years ago. And I rather you not taint what little family I have left."

By this time Rose was on her way back into the first chamber, bringing along with her a flaming torch and several other crew mates, one of them Italian. Sure enough as they brought more light into the dark chamber a gap was discovered in the sheet of iron, which had come from either the Portogallo or the Maria after they were destroyed by that monstrous Leviathan.

"We need something to use as a wedge, plus several long pipes or flattened pieces of iron. I want two men on levers, and Rose I need you with the wedge. We'll bend the plate and pull it to the right until there is sufficient spaces by which to gain passage into the next chamber. Hopefully this is the only one, but just in case we will bring our prying tools with us into the next section."

After giving his instructions Nevel took a torch from one of the men and squeezed it through the small gap, he then tossed the torch as far as he could, a difficult task as there wasn't sufficient room with which to achieve a proper casting of the burning stick.

Nevel used the light to see inside the next section, though the flames of the torch had only illuminated the smallest portion of the room.

Janie's face darkened, she was not going to take this, being called a taint was not something she was interested in putting up with, but there was still no way he could know, she didn't even have any idea who her father was "listen sir, my mother was a hooker, she often fucked ten men a day, your brother or anyone else" Janie's face was hard, determined, there was a very good reason why she didn't trust men. She decided to stay on his good side "I can reassure you that I won't tell Rose that there's one in a houndred chance that I'm her nephiew" she rolled her eyes at him before leaving to help clear more debree, she was not gonna risk her life for a man who called her a taint.

The surviving crew of the Kaiser Max numbered under 20 men, five of whom had received significant injury and as a result where not able to perform any extraneous activities. Rose had ushered the men down into the gun deck, the five injured men were leading the rear.

These unfortunate sailors would be spared any further discomfort when an arrant wave came rushing over the rail, the men's legs were taken from beneath them as they were swept over the starboard side of the San Martino. The placement of their bodies during the onrush of water had served as a blockage, those who had already descended into the lower decks were spared injury.

These brave men had paid for the safety of their Conrad's with their lives. In an attempt to prevent more sea water from rushing into the gun deck several of the more fit sailors blocked the entryway with a large sheet of iron from one of the ships that were destroyed before the actual onset of the battle for Vis.

After making sure that the coverlets for the gun ports were also secure the ragtag group of exhausted sailors got some much needed rest.

Rose had been heartbroken to discover the five injured men missing from the group she had led into the second level of the ship. The entire day had been nothing but death and loss, for both sides, and now it was wearing heavily upon her shoulders. She had never thought such an adventure at her brother's side would turn out the way it had. While the men were blocking up any holes so the water could not get in, she moved carefully through the ship to where her brother was resting. She saw the young boy from earlier and offered him a small smile. He was doing well today. Rose wasn't so sure that if she'd been in this situation as a child so young that she'd have been as sturdy. Turning, she sank down next to her brother.

"I'm sorry I've put you in this position, Nevel, with me being here… But, I'm glad we're together through this. I would be frantic if I were at home. You're all I've got," she said quietly, giving her brother's arm a small hug.

Rose curled up at his side, yawning wide, and closed her eyes. She let out a soft sigh and relaxed, eventually drifting off into a troubled sleep. Her dreams were filled with sea monsters and guns, and of dead bodies and blood. All too soon, she was awakened by the movement of the other men getting up and preparing to get back to work at clearing the way to the third level. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes, her hand protesting at the sudden movement, then pushed herself up and stepped up to see what needed to be done.

Nevel caught a glimpse of the spark in Rose' eyes as she arose and got right to work, he was so very proud of his sister, she had really elevated herself to the task of being as good a sailor as was possible under the circumstances. For many years Nevel hadn't thought very much of her decisions and exploits, she seemed to shirk responsibilities commonly associated with what a woman of that era should be.

He now understood his sisters reasons for acting the way she had in the past, but it wasn't until that second when she popped up to lead the charge of clearing the debris which covered the entrance to the third deck, that he finally truly understood her. Nevel lightly chuckled to himself as he realized that his little sister was being more active in the preparations for restarting the generator then he was.

He quickly got up and walked over to where Rose and the other men were working and joined in on the fun.

After a few minutes of hard labor everyone working suddenly stopped as each of them simultaneously felt a presence coming toward them from behind. Frantically they turned, each with their own idea of what had creeped up behind them already in their minds.

Nevel's first consideration was that the ship was being invaded by pirates, still others had far stranger suspicions. None of the them expected to see what they did upon turning around.

The eerie supernatural fog had crept into the vessel through the smallest of cracks and crevices, wisps of mist suddenly surrounded three of the sailors just above their ankles.

Nevel and his crew were hardy, weather-worn sailors who had sailed upon many oceans to fight those rival countries who have challenged Austria and its claim of central European dominance. Even the most junior member had never experience even the slightest tinge of an unsettled stomach or sweated brow.

These same sailors had suddenly come down with the most severe bout of sea sickness anyone had ever experienced, each crew member had clutched their stomachs and were now bent over in nauseous agony. At this point the fog which had dragged the three sailors into the dark had returned and was now totally surrounding Nevel, his sister and his remaining crew.

It was almost as if the fog had brought on their symptoms, the closer it came to them the more severe the nausea became. The crew had fallen to the floor in great anguish, several began to vomit violently, as Nevel looked up to see a fog which seemed to have sentience.

The mist had suddenly gathered into half a dozen individual smoky columns, the fog then condensed into human-like forms.

Nevel jumped into action as he saw one of the mist-beings choke and then push the now dead Italian sailor to the floor. No sooner had the spirit dispatched the beefy crew member, it set its sight on Rose. Nevel was certainly brave, acting to save his only sister from harm, but he was definitely no match for the mist-zombie.

"Rose!" Nevel screamed before attacking the supernatural being.

In a matter of seconds Nevel was sent flying against the hull, hitting the wooden wall with an audible thump, Nevel was momentarily knocked unconscious. Five sailors had just been wiped off the boat by a fierce wave, and now these "fog things" were about to kill several more.

It seems the elements have it out for these sailors.

"Rose! watch out!!" Nevel shouted as he came awake, the warning came from the fear that had accumulated in his mind as he slept, in a dream; which as with all dreams lasted but a brief second, Nevel saw his sister being attacked from behind.

Now that he was aware of his surroundings he saw his dream transform into reality as one of the mist-things came up to Rose. In a quick movement Nevel reared up and pushed Rose to the side and then in a single smooth motion dove towards the fog creature.

Nevel passed right through its veil and tumbled along the floor, getting up Nevel ran directly through the thing once more as he ran to Rose. Taking his sisters hand he lead her to the passage to the third deck, shouting to the remaining sailors to come with him.

Other sailors met their demise in that battle, the last of the Italians had been ripped to pieces by the ghosts, two of Oblust's men were also killed.

Captain Nevel Oblust, his sister and the remaining 4 crew members ran down to the third and last deck to safety, the zombie-ghosts did not follow them

-For now.

Rose faltered and fell to the side when her brother pushed her. She watched with wide eyes from where she lay on the floor as Nevel leapt through the misty form. She let out a soft breath when he simply fell through the creature then got up and ran toward her once more. She quickly scooped up her sword as her grabbed her hand and they ran together to the lower level.

The woman turned as they ran, noticing that there were only four crew members remaining. "So many dead…" she whispered sadly. Thankfully, the young boy was among the living. "Come! Hurry!" she told the boy, grabbing his small, thin hand and pulling him along behind her. He was far too young to be on a warship, let along going through the horrors they now faced. Rose had unconsciously decided to take the child under her wing. And she held a firm grip on both her brother's hand and the boy's as they slipped into the darkness of the lower level.

"What do we do now?" she whispered to Nevel. "There's nowhere else to go…" She didn't want to speak too loudly. She didn't want the others to feel the desperation that she felt, even though she was sure they already did. How could they not, in such a terrible, dire situation? Surely they were all just as terrified as she.

The plan remained the same, get to that blasted steam engine and get the god-damn thing to work. Nevel knew it was all pointless now, how could they defend themselves against ghosts and get the engine together at the same time.

It was important to Nevel to keep the last few members of the ill-fated Kaiser Max safe for little while longer, he had been the captain of that grand old lady for many years, the lest he could do was keep the spirit of his command alive.

There was no time for procrastinating, they had to get to the engine room, they were fortunate that the iron slates from the destroyed Italian vessels hadn't completely blocked the way.

Nevel wasn't much for facts concerning the unseen world and he had absolutely no idea of how to stop fog-zombies.

"Our only hope is to get that engine working."

More then anything Nevel had said this to give the others something to keep them busy and to pass the time before they were all ripped to shreds by the spirits.
