Samuel Lovecraft had been brought up on old sea tales his grandfather would churn out after every hardy sit-down family meal. His father certainly told enough tall tales of his own to keep Sam's imagination sharp, he also many quite a few stories to tell, being a professional scavenger and all.

When Sam was young he would often make up his own stories and tell them to father and Grandpoo, as he called him.

Bartholomew Lovecraft had lived an amazing life filled with outrageous adventures, "He has a great story for every hour of the day of a three day weekend," which was Bartholomew's son's favorite way of describing of his own father to those who didn't know him.

The wealth of personal experience was no doubt the result of his advanced age, after all the man had literally grown up with the country, being born in 1851. In 1810 his father had come to Oregon as a member of the Astor Expedition, sent by John Jacob Astor's Pacific Fur Company, and would ultimately found Fort Astoria as its primary fur-trading post in the Northwest, this was also the first permanent U.S. settlement on the Pacific coast and an extremely important post for American exploration of the continent.

Situated near the mouth of the Columbia River, Astoria was named after the John Jacob Astor, the Lovecraft family would settle near the Port of Astoria; roughly two miles from the Megler Bridge which connected Washington across the river. The most senior Lovecraft had worked for the Pacific Fur Company for over 30 years, Sam's grandfather had come to the company less then a year before its ultimate demise, though the company had been in decline for many years prior to its liquidation.

The 290-ton trading ship named the Tonquin was blown up in Clayoquot Sound when its efforts to trade were turned into an attack by Tla-o-qui-aht in revenge for an insult by the ship's captain. The sole surviving crew member, after the rest were killed, set fire to the ship's magazine in order to destroy the ship.

Many natives were killed, and only one crew member survived to tell the tale. That brave crew member was Sam's grandfather, and his remembrances of that event were fuel for many a bedtime story. Nothing puts a child to sleep faster then a tale of high adventure at sea.

Recently, Sam has had an itch to try and scavenge the wreckage for possible items of worth, though he seriously doubted that he would find anything beyond a few personal items belonging to the doomed crew members.

--------------------------------------------------------

Sam was frantic as he swam to the surface in a desperate attempt to board his boat, the Marion Rose. The thing from the hull was hideous, tentacled and alien to anything he had ever seen in Clayoquot sound, if only he had taken his fathers and grandfathers warnings seriously. Sam thought all those stories were simply the vivid imagination of two former seamen, he had no notion that such hideous abominations could actually be trolling these waters. His regret was short live as a pulpy pinkish tentacle wrapped itself around the ankle of his right leg, pulling him down to certain death.

""Hey sailor men and sailor women, its another beautiful fall day here in Astoria. So get out of bed and jump in the ocean why don't cha."" Came the voice of Howie "Powwow" Parson, morning DJ for KMGF radio.

"Jesus, what a dream......God I hate that guy!" Sam said as he struggled his way out of the utter comfort of the soft warm bed, his wife Anne had already arisen.

Wiping the crusty sleep from the corner of his eyes Sam finally got up and headed to the kitchen; he was thinking bacon and eggs, but what he got was a single cup of coffee that his wife left out for him before going off to work her half-day shift at the cannery.

His son Ryan was already on his way to school, leaving him home alone, Sam had an obligation to attend a meeting at Bumblebee that morning, though he rather be diving, it was the perfect day for it.

Grandpa was up in his bedroom, where he spend much of his time, even at 117 years old he remained sharp and alert.

After finishing his allotted cup of coffee Sam was on his way, reluctantly.

Who the hell wants to go to work at a tuna factory rather go diving for sunken treasure off Devil's reef, it wasn't just the fun of it, there was family history to consider. The ship at the bottom of Clayoquot sound was the same exact one that his grandfather had piloted back in the early 1800s.

Sam had heard many stories regarding his grandfathers life and experiences aboard the vessel, but he had never been told exactly what happened all those years ago.

"I fucking hate Bumblebee tuna." Sam thought to himself as he walked out to his brand new 1968 Vette.

The blue sporty car peeled out of the driveway and soon Sam was on his way to the office, his earlier thoughts about his disdain for his current employment began to soften somewhat the closer he got to the Bumblebee tuna headquarters.

It wasn't such a bad job, Its not like he had his hands stuck in fish guts all day long, no, that sweet smelling duty was reserved for his wife-It made him chuckle every time he thought that.

Sam was driving toward the offices along Fleet Street and Dozen Ave. Around Main St Sam saw the young Lily drive passed him going in the opposite direction, he had known her all her life, just like Sam, she grew up and had spent her entire life in Astoria, nearly every citizen in Astoria has some kind of ancestral link to the small town. Several minutes after spotting the VW Sam had arrived at company headquarters.

Lily grinned and waved cheerfully at everyone she passed. That was just the kind of town they lived in. She even waved at Sam when she passed him. He'd been like an older brother to her ever since she could remember. When she got to the school, there were a few other teachers milling around, but for the most part, it was quiet. She headed toward her classroom and began to set up for the day.

The school day went easily, as it almost always did. Lily loved her job and her students usually loved her just as much. But she was excited when the school day was over. She changed out of her work clothes and into beach-proper attire then headed out to meet her friends at their usual rocky spot. She was the first one to arrive, and she slipped into her wetsuit, eyeing the waves that lapped up on the rocks as she thought about diving in for a swim without her friends.

Growing up, Lily's parents had always warned her against swimming by herself, especially at her favorite spot, there by the rocks. But she knew her friends would be along soon, so she went for it, leaping into the cold water.

Sam wanted so badly to blow off the meeting, but it was important for him to be there, he was senior exec after all, but by the time he pulled his blue Vette up to the building he had a feeling that the meeting had been postponed. Sam saw several executives standing outside the building, it was strange in that the people standing there were some of the most dedicated execs the company had, they bled tuna oil, as Sam would often say.

Sure enough, before he could exit the vehicle one of these people came up to the driver side window and announced that the meeting had indeed been canceled, the vice president of Bumblebee Tuna had died the night before-"Heart attack it seems."

It was sad, yes, but that wasn't the first thing that came to Sam's mind. After the bearer of the bad news had told Sam the unpleasant news he rejoined the other execs and Sam immediately pulled out of the parking lot and was off.

Luckily Sam had his diving gear packed tightly in the limited space of Vette's trunk and so he was able to head directly for Dark Point beach, arriving there only ten minutes after Lily had jumped into the water.

Clearly both Lily and Sam had totally ignored all the horror stories concerning Devil's Reef, she had chosen to swim the waters and Sam often began his underwater adventures off the shores of Dark Point.

Arriving at the beach a few minutes later Sam started dragging his gear down to the beach, as he was bringing the first few pieces of his total setup down to the edge of the water he noticed someone swimming, examining the individual for but a few seconds before getting back to his business.

Lily bobbed around in the water for a while, even diving down beneath the waves with her goggles on so she could see what there was to find below. Every once in a while she'd find some interesting stuff, old coins, abandoned toys. She never dove very far, for she was more the snorkeling type, if anything. But she loved the water and she loved the chances she had to be in it.

The water was a bit choppier than usual, but that didn't scare Lily. She been swimming out there during storms before… not the best idea at all. She knew the dangers, for when she was about 19, she had gone for a swim in that very same spot just before a storm came in, and she'd gotten caught off-guard by a rather large wave that had thrown her against the sharp rocks. Luckily, she'd been with friends and they had gotten her out quickly enough to get her help.

She popped back up, examining an interesting shell, when she noticed movement on the beach. She wondered if her friends had arrived yet and decided to relax on the beach instead of come out to the rocks that jutted out into the water. Holding the shell she'd found in her hand, she swam toward the shore, letting the waves carry her in when she could. She eyed the equipment as she made her way up to the sand, then finally spotted Sam as he carried more stuff over.

"Oh, hey Sam! Getting ready for a dive? What're you after today?" she asked, giving him a smile as he walked toward her.

Sam was on his back down to the waterline when he heard the female swimmer call him by name, it was then that Sam realized who it was.

"Oh, Lily its you." Sam dropped the last few pieces of his gear.

"Oh, well. I thought Id take a swim out to the Marion Rose. I'm trying to get the society to raise the ship and if salvageable, display it as a great piece of Astoria history."

Sam started to adorn his diving gear; he would swim out a few hundreds yards to eventually reach the very edge of Devil's Reef, from there the sea bottom dropped off considerably, going from under one hundred feet to several.

From there Sam could dive and try and find the Marion Rose, unfortunately history has not recorded the exact position where the vessel had sank, no historian or funded expedition has ever sought to discover it, the only person who possesses that important bit of information is old man Lovecraft.

Sam had tried on several occasions to find the ship, each time he failed to locate it, but today his luck would change.

Lily plopped down in the sand next to his gear, yawning lightly. She draped her goggles across her knees and leaned back on her hands. "Oh, that would be fantastic," she said. "I wonder what you'll find!"

She looked at the shell she'd found once again then tossed it into the waves that lapped up onto the shore, letting out a sigh. "I was supposed to be meeting Kate and Helen, but I think they've forgotten about me." She gazed out over the water. "Anyway, careful out there, though. It's a bit choppy today."

Lily hopped up, wiping her hands off on her legs and put her hands on her hips. "Well, I'll let you get to it. I'm going to swim a bit longer before I head home. Might as well not waste a nice day!" She slid her goggles back on. "See you later, Sam," she called out as she headed back toward the water, wading in to her knees before diving into an oncoming wave.

Sam sank his body into the water and swam out to the ridge where Dark point beach met the deeper waters of Clayoquot sound, after reaching this point Sam sank down into the deep and murky water. The experienced diver took his time and reserved his energy for the plunge, for now he stuck close to the surface and made his way toward Devil's Reef, once Sam had reached the 25o foot mark he dove deeper and deeper into the Sound.

Sam had no idea how deep the waters were this far out, though he knew that the only way to find out was to dive deeper still, after awhile Sam realized that he would not be able to reach its depths, the Marion Rose no doubt lay on the bottom beyond his reach.

Sam realized that he would need assistance if he was ever going to reach the ship, the depth of the waters were far beyond the limitations of his gear and more importantly, it lay beyond the limits of what his body could withstand in pressure.

Sam dove to the absolute limit of what his body could withstand before making a break for the surface. Before making his ascent Sam cast one final glance into the deeper waters, that's when he spotted the ship, though it was too far away to make out much detail. Sam knew it would take more sophisticated gear then he currently had with him to get reach the Marion Rose.

Sam swam back to the surface and within an hour was back on the beach removing his gear.

By the time Sam emerged from the waters of Dark Point beach Lily had already packed up her car and left for home, she of course had no way of knowing how long Sam would be, he had to swim far, and then even further still underwater in order to get near the ship.

Once Sam was back on the beach and had removed his gear and stuffed it all into the trunk of his Vette Sam also left for home, that night he would call the Astoria historical society and tell them about his discovery.

Over the next few days the small town was in a buzz about the discovery of the ill-fated Marion Rose, the entire town would pull together for the festival which would take place a few days after the announcement.

The next day, the whole town was alight with excitement over Sam's discovery. Lily was just as excited of the rest of them, and proud of Sam as if he were a member of her own family. She quickly put together some projects for her students to do for the festival. They drew pictures and made up a banner that would be hung on one of the buildings downtown.

On the morning of the festival, Lily was up and out early, helping to set things up. Strings of lights were strung across the streets, flags waved in the light breeze, and people were out everywhere already, chatting. Lily climbed down off a ladder after wrapping a set of lights around one of the street lamps and walked to the little coffee shop on the corner. It was busy with townsfolk, so she got her coffee to go and walked back out to find an empty bench to sit on while she drank and enjoyed watching the decorations go up.

Like the rest of the townspeople, Lily couldn't wait to discover what kind of treasures there would be on the Marion Rose. She loved to dive along the shallower waters and find what she could; but she never had the guts to do a deeper dive before. She sat back against the bench and watch as people came and went, preparing for the festival.

There was a lot of preparation that needed to be done if they were going to raise the Marion Rose tomorrow, there was much for Sam to do as well and so he had returned to his house, a three story home which stood just before Coven Wood.

The Lovecraft family residence was the only home built around this area, in fact there was some controversy way back when they had first dedicated to build their home in that area, it seems that the townsfolk didn't take it to well that they have constructed a house next the old woods, reputed to be haunted even back then. Frankly the old stories of secret sacrifice and the worship of ancient beings seemed silly and outrages, and the Lovecraft family had never put much stock in superstition.

Now back home Sam climbed the stairs to the second floor to check up on his grandfather, he would also tell him about the discovery and the plans to raise the Marion Rose in the morning.

The upstairs floor was dark and cold, as it would often get, particularity in his grandfathers room which faced the sea. The house stood far enough away from the water as to not suffer damage from the harsh winds that often blew across Dark Point beach, they were especially strong in the winter season when the seas became rough.

Walking down the long hallway to his grandfathers room still reminded him of when he was much younger, how it always felt as if he was some kind of adventurer journeying down a long and frightening passageway to seek wisdom from the old man of the sea, which is exactly what the young Sam would pretend whenever he visited his grandfathers room to hear yet another tall tale of the seven seas.

At 117 years old granddad would spend much of his time at rest in his room, though he would always be the first family member at the kitchen table for every meal.

"Gramps, you up." Sam said as he opened the creaking door of his grandfathers bedroom.

"I'm awake Samuel." Came the reply from old man Lovecraft who was sitting on the edge of his bed, starring out the window toward the ocean.

"Gramps, I found the Marion Rose, its jest off of Devil's reef."

Sam's grandfather remained silent unmoving. "We will try and raise it in the morning. Will you be at the festival to celebrate its discovery?"

At first Sam considered that his grandfather was simply uninterested in the discovery, as he hadn't said anything after being told of it. If Sam could have seen his grandfathers face he would have noticed the look of utter fear in his eyes.

"Mar....Marion Rose." The old man said in a stuttered whisper.

"Yes, your ship granddad, you piloted it back in 1810. It struck something and sank by the reef."

In a barely audible voice the old man whispered his reaction. "Struck......nothing."

Sam sensed that his grandfather wasn't much in the mood for conversation and so he excused himself. "Well gramps, I have to go back down stairs and make some phone calls." Sam turned to leave when his grandfather turned his head to face the back of Sam's light orange sweater.

"Samuel wait. There are no doubt some very interesting relics to be found aboard the Marion Rose, but promise me something."

Sam turned to face the old man.

"Yes sir."

Old man Lovecraft stood up by the side of his bed and then turned his entire body to the window, once more starring out at the sea.

"In the cargo hold, behind a break in the hull wall there is something that I need you to retrieve. Its a box, an iron box which is completely sealed, perhaps its contents have survived the harsh waters. If it did, I need you to remove whatever is inside and see to its destruction."

Sam's calls had been to confirm the rentals of the barges and floating cranes which would be needed to lift the Marion Rose from the depths of Clayoquot sound, after ending the long conversation with the local salvage yard Sam retired to his room for the rest of the night. There Sam would lay upon his bed unable to sleep, missing dinner, Sam's weary mind and body were finally subdued by want of sleep.

As Sam slept the heavily equipped floating platforms made their way to Devil's reef, by 5 O'clock that morning the flatbeds had reached their positions. Three hours later Sam was on the reef and was ready to take charge of the effort to raise the vessel. Sam had several divers at his disposal that day, these men would be the ones to make the heavy-chain connection between the sunken ship and the awaiting barges floating upon the waters surface.

These divers had more sophisticated equipment then Sam when he had first ventured into the ocean to discover the vessel, as a result they were able to go right up to the ship, allowing them to connect the cables. If Sam could have achieved this he would have noticed the rather peculiar pattern of damage, his opportunity to see this damage would come soon.

Sam was constantly in contact with the divers below the surface, he would received an update on their progress every few minutes.

Two hours later the cables were finally connected to the Marion Rose in the bow and stern, having been threaded through large portions of the ship's hull that had been ripped away from the frame.

Sam's last communication with the divers was in regard to the completion of their task.

Sam was standing on one of the barges with the mayor of Astoria and the head of the historical society, along with their entourage of various country officials. Upon the beach there stood hundreds of onlookers, most were fellow residences of Astoria, though there were many out-of-townies who had come to witness the spectacle.

Within the crowd standing on Dark Point beach there were several men with loud speakers, who informed the gathering as to the progress of the raising of the Marion Rose.

Finally the time had come, the sudden sound of static from Sam's two-way radio, grabbed every ones attention, causing the mayor and several others to flinch in excitement and anticipation-Such was the exuberant mood of that moment.

"Okay mate, we're ready on this end." Came the sound of the head divers voice from out of the radio.

"Alright! Lets do this." Sam replied with an enthusiasm to equal the divers.

Lowering his radio and then turning to his left and then to his right, Sam called for the two cranes to begin a slow lifting motion. The operators of the massive cranes had to keep up an even pace as they raised the severely damaged vessel, any sudden jerk could split the vessel in two

Hearts pounded in chests of the spectators as they wished for success and for the poor Marion Rose to remain intact.

On the day that the Marion Rose was to be raised from her resting place on the ocean floor, Lily woke early to head out to the beach so she could get a good spot to watch from. She was there early enough to watch most of the preparations that were going on above water, smiling with pride as she watched Sam do his thing. His wife and son, of course, had come to watch as well, and Lily stood with them, chatting excitedly about what was about to happen.

The beach had filled up quickly, but the moment the cranes began to raise the cables to which the Marion Rose was attached, an excited hush fell over the crowd. The only sound was the movement of the cranes and the soft voices of news reporters as they spoke into cameras, keeping the viewers at home informed of what was happening.

Lily clasped her hands together and brought them to her lips, her eyes locked onto the water, waiting for the ship to breach the surface.

Even the excitement of this most unusual event had to give way to the laws of physics, the cranes were raising the Marion Rose, but due to the condition of the vessel they had to do their job slowly, as to prevent serious damage to the ship. This meant that the process would be painstakingly slow, and over the next few minutes the event had lost dozens of Astoria citizens, after a half hour of waiting the ship was nearing the breach.

After an intolerably long wait the Marion Rose was getting close to breaking the surface of the water, inch by inch it rose up until finally it broke the waters surrounding Devil's Reef. The crowd exploded into cheers and claps as the ship was raised out of Clayoquot sound and into the bright light of day, the Marion Rose had been liberated from its icy prison, and although it would take several more hours the Marion Rose would ultimately wind up safely secured on one of the barges.

The process was a tricky one, exactness was required in lowing and positioning the ship. Immense, thick straps used to ship cargo and industrial-sized equipment across seas were utilized, normally these straps were used to insure that the cargo was secure, but with the Marion Rose they were being used to insure that the ship remained in one piece.

The barge with the Marion Rose slowly drifted to the shore.

The crowd was a bit restless while they waited. Some people left and came back with food and coffee that they shared with the other residents of the little town. But at last, the Marion Rose had broken the surface and a soft gasp of awe came from the lips of the crowd as one.

Lily took a small step forward, watching as the barge began to make its way toward the shore with the fragile ship. Her eyes drifted over the vessel, taking in the details of it. Her heart thudded with excitement, just as everyone else in the crowd. The young woman wondered what it would have been like to be on that ship in its day.

"Amazing, isn't it?" Sam's wife asked, breaking her out of her thoughts.

Lily turned, grinning. "It is! And very fitting that Sam should find it. You must be so proud of him."

The other woman grinned and nodded, beaming at the younger woman. They both turned back to watch as the ship made its way toward dry land.

All the hoopla of the event slowly faded, more and more of the onlookers left Dark Point beach, it seems the step of loading the Marion Rose onto a flatbed truck was far less impressive and exciting then an immense 18th century ship being raised from a watery grave. Sam had taken the second barge back to shore and was soon standing on the beach, Sam was determined to see the Marion Rose go through every stage of its rescue.

It was gone midnight when Sam finished the task of salvaging the old vessel, the Marion Rose would ultimately be placed in a special warehouse which had constructed specifically to store the ship, there it would remain until the Historical Society could complete the building which would permanently house the craft and serve as a museum.

That next day Sam went to the stockyard, he had been asked to do the initial search of the vessel, though raising the ship had been a satisfactory endeavor he still held out hope that something of interest would show up. Sam was mainly there to search the ship for the iron box that his grandfather mentioned in his story the other night. It was on the last level of the ship where Sam had discovered the iron box, it had been placed exactly where his grandfather had said.

Reaching into the hull wall Sam's fingers came into contact with something cold, abrasive and solid. Sam managed to slip another arm through the small opening to gain a better hold on the rusty object. Pulling the box from the dark hole Sam studied it for a few seconds before making his way out of the ship through one of the many holes in the hull.

Sam studied the box further as he walked toward the exit, stopping at the door before opening it he turned to take one final look at the ship, even then he could hardly believe that he had found the ship which he had been searching for these past 12 years. It was then that Sam noticed the odd pattern to the major point of damage, which consisted of a circular hole with five long gashes, one of which seemed to have caused more injury then the other four had.

A strange thought briefly crossed Sam's mind as he examined the damage, he realized it seemed preposterous but it looked as if something had literally grabbed the Marion Rose and pulled it down into the water.

Sam quickly dismissed it as a possible influence of the stories that his grandfather had told him regarding the so-called "Menace of Clayoquot sound."

Sam's nighttime visions were fortunately fleeting, no sooner had he begun to dream the sights and sounds of the dreary nightmare faded until Sam was finally awoken by the rays of the morning sun. Sam's first thought upon awaking was not the creepy dream-vision, but the rusty iron box sitting on the living room table.

Sam went straight for the box the second he was out of bed, bursting into the large, tastefully decorated room only to discovered that the box was gone, caught by surprise he turned toward the stairs. "Granddad!"

Within seconds Sam was at his grandfathers bedroom door, the impact of Sam's knuckles knocking on the heavy oak door caused it to open, creaking wide enough for him to gain access.

There he found the iron box sitting on a small table in front of his grandfathers bed, the box was open and empty with its contents in the hands of Sam's grandfather.

Old man Lovecraft was standing within the bright morning light that shined through the bedroom window, in his hands was what appeared to be an old film reel, he had it partially unwound and was examining the film using the sunlight to illuminate the frames and enable the old man to see what had been captured there.

"Phle'g-thon!"

The unsuspected pronunciation of this one word immediately caught Sam's interest, it sounded familiar to him, though he couldn't quite place where he had heard it before. Clearly, Sam's grandfather had something very important to tell him, the intensity of the mysterious word as it was spoken by old man Lovecraft had told Sam as much.

Now stepping fully into the room Sam would close the door behind him and wait for his grandfather to continue.

"Phle'g-thon is the god of change and transformation. It was supposed to have changed the world into what it is today, though not without opposition to these changes. The giant animal people, such as Spider, Ant, Fox, and Beaver, were the most vocal against Phle'g-thon's changes, and so as punishment it changed them into the normal animals we have today. Phle'g-thon was also said to have created the first people, made from dirt and an unknown ancient species of plant. The god was worshiped by the Nuu-chah-nulth, the Indigenous peoples of the pacific northwest coast of Canada. It was their belief and their retelling of the legend which fed and maintained the god, when the Nuu-chah-nulth were no-more the god was believed to have died, as its very existence depended upon their belief in it."

The retelling of the creatures history had taken its toll on old man Lovecraft, placing the film on the nightstand he walked over to his bed and laid down, completely exhausted. Sam stepped up to the stand and removed the reel of film, then as he turned to exit the room his grandfather grabbed Sam's right wrist.

"There is more....the part.....I pla.......y." Sam's grandfather was unable to get the words out, passing into unconsciousness before he could form a complete sentence.

Sam took the reel of film with him, as he walked out of the door Sam reached into the rusty iron box and removed the old camera, taking this second item with him Sam finally exited the room.

Some time later Sam could be seen sitting on the sand of Dark Point beach with the same film reel in his hands, studying it against the light of the sun.

After she'd had her breakfast, Lily left the little cafe, not in the mood to be around the small crowd of people that had gathered inside to chat all about the exciting news that was going on in their little town. She walked through the streets, hands tucked in her pockets, until she had walked right out toward the water. Her gaze on the ground in front of her, she was lost in thought and Lily hadn't even noticed where her feet had been taking her until her heels sank awkwardly into the sand and she stumbled, nearly falling.

The young woman slipped her shoes off and let them dangle off her fingers as she walked further onto the beach. Her gaze drifted out across the water, but her mind was elsewhere. She let out a sigh, her eyes finally falling on the lone form sitting on the beach. She turned, about to leave him to his silence, but something held her. She turned back and walked toward him.

"Sam?" she called out as she approached. "Everything alright? I thought you'd be out celebrating all weekend.." She smiled as she stepped up on his left side.

From the corner of his eye Sam saw a pair of dainty feet with red painted toenails step up beside him, looking up and to his left Sam discovered the young Lily Roman looking down at him, her inquiry had pulled him from the concentration which he had lavished on the task of examining the reel of film in his hands.

"Yeah, everything is fine Lily, thanks for asking. Let me ask you something." Sam handed Lily several frames of film to examine herself.

What had been captured on the film was pretty blurry, but it seemed to show something strange on the bottom of the sea.

Sam thought that it was simply a trick of shadow acting in connection with several crucial factors; which included the age of the film, and the conditions in which the film was shot, in this case deep in the ocean. Frankly, Sam couldn't figure out how the film could have been taken underwater in the first place, the camera used to make these shots was a BIOKAM 17.5mm introduced in the year 1800, and the first multi-frame camera (8 frames per turn of the crank).

Sam certainly had his own notions as to what the film had shown him, or at least what it seems to be showing. To Sam's rationalistic mind it looked like nothing more then a hole covered up by something round, some kind of metal covering.

On the other hand it was probably just an illusion of reflection, position, and perhaps one of those deep sea jelly fish that glow bright colors. That's all it could really be right?

One of those jelly things hiding beneath a rock formation which only appeared to be a round metallic disk covering an illuminated hole in the bottom of the ocean, yeah that's it.

Sam held off any further judgments until he heard Lily's thoughts on the matter.

Lily folded her legs in the most ladylike way she could, since she was wearing a dress, and plopped down in the sand next to Sam. She took the film that was handed to her and raised an eyebrow. "This looks… old. Did you find this on the Marion Rose?" she asked.

She held the film up toward the sunlight. "Wow, how has it survived this long? And what-"

She frowned, stealing a glance at Sam before looking back to the film. "I'm… not sure what this is. Some kind of angry sea monster?" she joked, letting out a light laugh, but the words brought back the memory of her own dreams from the night before and she shuddered a bit. "I don't know Sam.. A jellyfish or something? But I don't understand how this could be exposed under the water. Film this old…" She trailed off and lowered the film to look over at the man next to her. "What do you think it is?"

Sam had heard Lily's question though he did not see her turn to face him as she said it, he had his head bowed down as he starred at the sand before him. Staying in this position with his legs crossed beneath him on his knees, he replied.

"To tell you the truth Lil, I'm not sure what the hell that could be. Although, a sea monster seems unlikely, of course my granddad would swear otherwise." Sam finally turned his head to look at Lily.

"I was thinking of splicing all of the film together and exhibiting it at the museums grand opening, which I think won't be too far off. The mayor is set on having two crews working day and night on the new building. So, what do you think?"

Sam turned his back to stare at the sand once again as he awaited Lily's reply.
