Description

Name:Image
Dare James Phillips
Nickname:
Red
Age:
23
Sexuality:
Straight

Likes:
+Booze
+good food
+honest people
+small towns
+Guns

Dislikes:
-The government,
-Big Citys
-Work,
-His brother
-cats

ImageFears:
Cuts (ill explain later)
loneliness
claustrophobic

Hobbies:
Guns
Checkers
cooking

Strengths:
Red is rather muscular from years of work in the local lumber mill, a job that has taught him to make a fist as well as he can swing an ax. Aside from that he is rather mechanically minded, being able to fix most things from a car to most machines that hes familiar with. He also was raised around guns and has become a fairly decent shot over the years.

Flaws:
Red is only a few steps away from being considered the town drunk and on top of that he has a pack a day habit. Known to be relatively quick to anger (especially when drunk) Red has found himself in several fist fights over things ranging from serious to trivial. He also has become fairly in debt to a few shady people due to his less than stellar gambling career.

Image

Personality:
When sober Red is a somewhat quite individual and is normally rather kind hearted. On the rare nights he hasn't had a drink he regularly keeps to himself, but for the most part he can be found at a local bar or on the job for “Woodchuck Inc”, a local woodcutting business. However Red is also known to become rather outspoken after consuming a few drinks, openly commenting on anything he sees that he dislikes as loudly as he sees fit. Due to this hes been banned from a good number of bars.

History:
Dare was born and raised in Blue Hill Maine, living on the outskirts of town in the local trailer park known by the locals as “Red Rust Trailers”. Growing up with his father mother and younger brother Bill he never learned what a real family was. Between his fathers nightly alcoholic beatings and his mothers blatant neglect Dare was more then ready to move out by the time he turned 18(when he grew up he found out his mother had had bipolar disorder.). Ironically when he did finally grow up he never actually moved out of “Red Rust Trailers”, one of the poorer parts of town, but he made damn sure his trailer was as far away from his dysfunctional family as could be. Growing up his father had given him plenty of issues, ranging from a fear of the government to his nightly beatings as a child, but one good thing he did do for him was get him a job at the same company he had worked at all the years he “raised” Dare. The company was known as “woodchuck inc.”, a company that specialized in cutting down the large pine forests just south of town. The pay was more then decent and it was a steady job (as long as they didn't run out of trees to cut.) Sure, the work was demanding but Dare honestly didn't mind one bit, honestly there was something cathartic in swinging a large ax into trees day after day. To this day he still lives in Blue Hills, content to cut wood and drink the rest of his days away.

So begins...

What have we done?

In January, 2013, the Woods sister's were able to escape from The Lab, a secret government facility hidden in the middle of the Mojave Desert. The Lab is the only home they've ever known, and the scientists, the only 'parental' figures they've had. But while normal teenage girls were worrying about high school dances, acing that pop quiz, and trying to climb the ranks of popularity, these three girls were poked, prodded and being made to heighten their mental and physical abilities. The girls were kept in cages, treated like lab rats. One night, there had been a chemical leak in The Lab. All the scientists were ordered to evacuate, not having time to get the girls' out, they locked the cages and left, or so they thought.

One of the cages was not locked completely and the three girls were able to escape. With the scientists running around, trying to control the chemical leak, the girls easily slipped away. Getting out of the dessert was one of the hardest parts of their journey, there were many times the girls wanted to stop, and give up, but they kept going, helping each other to get through the desert. As soon as they escaped the desert, they found the closest town and tried to fit in. The government was too quick for them, their pictures were already all over the news. There were false reports, saying the girls were murderers and highly dangerous.

At first, it was difficult for the girls to fit in, not knowing anything about the real life or how to interact with others, the scientists were never ones to hold conversations. At first, they stuck out like soar thumbs, not able to stay in one place for longer than a few hours before someone would recognize them and they would have to use their powers to get away. The longer they were on the run, they slowly started to adapt, to become street smart. They did what ever was necessary to get by, robbing and stealing when they needed food or money. It didn't take long for them to commit their first murder. Now, the governments' claims may be true, but the girls only did it because they had no other choice.

They changed their appearances so they wouldn't stick out so much, and moved as far away from the Mojave Desert as possible, slowly making their way up to Maine where they came across a town called Blue Hill. Blue hill is a small town located on Blue Hill Bay, population a little more than two thousand. The girls, with what money they had left, bought a small house on the edge of town as well as a cheap run down car. The house, a dilapidated two story home with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, the shutters barely hanging on, paint peeling off the outside of the house, shingles missing from the roof. Their car, is an old beat up, black, 1986 Ford Taurus. They're going to have to adapt quickly to living in this small town, or run the risk of being arrested and sent back to The Lab.

Red sat at the local diner affectionately named “The Blue Hill”. The place wasn't much to look at, the building being a simple 80s era design with cheap carpet and worn out tables and chairs which only had a few matching sets. The staff was rather friendly, although extremely small in number, and seemed constantly busy as they ran two and from table to table trying to keep their guests happy.

Red came here regularly because the food was decent, the people kind, but most importantly of all, the drinks were cheap. Sitting alone atop an old metallic bar stool at the tiny bar on the right side of the room Red let out a deep sigh as he stared down into his glass of amber brown liquid. Another day another dollar and Red had been left pretty worn out from his labor intensive job and it didn't help matters that the man a few seats down from him was berating the bartender for her 'poor service.'

Finally noticing tears in the young girls eyes who'd been serving both he and the ass verbally attacking her Red couldn’t take it anymore, and the three glasses of whiskey he already consumed only fueled his anger. “Hey asshole! Leave the fuckin lady alone!” Red barked as he sprang from his stool, slamming his now empty glass on the wooden bar table. His voice was as rough as he looked and standing at his full height of 5'11 inches he glared angrily at the well dressed diner patron, his well toned muscles already flexing beneath his dirty red flannel shirt. He was ready to swing and judging by the look on the other mans face he knew it.

“Hey! Cut that crap out!” A large portly man in a white apron boomed in a deep voice as he ran over to the bar. “How many times do I gotta tell you to leave the other customers alone?! Am I gonna have to call the police again?”

Throwing his hands up in a 'I give' manner Red quickly retorted“Woah Big Tony lets not go overboard, I was just-” Before Red could finish he was cut off. “Yeah yeah your always 'just' doin somethin” He poked Red with a pudgy finger. “Now sit down and keep quite! Only reason I let you in here is cause your practically responsible for a quarter of the alchohol we sell.” After berating Red in front of the other diners the pudgy man known as 'Big Tony' began apologizing profusely to the man Red had come awfully close to attacking.

With a sigh Red sat back down and ordered another drink.

"Foooo-hooo-hooo-hooooood!"

She thanked Lynn for opening the door for her, getting onto her crutches and making her way into the restaurant. Her and the damned crutches -- no, her damned missing leg dragged them down and wasted time even when they were going to get a simple meal. She figured that they didn't mind, that they were used to it by now... But she refused to acknowledge herself as anything but a weight on her sisters. Making a final adjustment to make sure that her eyepatch was in place, she walked into the restaurant. Playfully swinging once more, she made her way to the table that Lillian had decided upon and took up an empty half of the booth, resting her leg up on it so that her back was pressed against the wall. Her crutches were under the table beside her. She could just barely see over the booth as well. With her menu in hand, she inspected it like she was reading some hardcore novel.

"I want the BLT club sandwich. And fries. And soda, too. Damn it feels good to be able to eat real food." She was excited and smiling like a doofus, but she spoke low. Statements like that cold arouse suspicion. She covered her face up with the menu as well until she closed it and set it on the table. "This feels good, you know? Just being out. Able to just... relax and eat?" Her small smile was big on her face and genuine as it could have possibly been.

Curiosity would tempt her to look around the diner before the waitress would even get to them. One man in particular sat by himself with a drink in his hand and a pretty impressive beard coming in. She thought he was pretty cool, just based on appearance. Grizzly and tough. However, what she said to her sisters was, "Hey. Look at that guy. He kind of looks like an axe murderer, doesn't he? Careful not to mess with him." She would giggle at her own joke whether they found it funny or not.

Lynn was the last to sit down, taking the time to inspect the dinner and all in it. Nothing made her radar go off, so she didn't feel like anything here would harm them. Finally she took a seat next to Lillian, and picked up the menu with a smile. All the food looked good, and she'd take anything. 'I think I'll settle with a nice salad. I'm not that hungry. Honestly she was picking this meal due to it being the cheapest. While they could afford three meals, Lynn wanted to save as much money as possible. Expecially if she would be buying Sam smokes.

She sighed and put the menu down. Her eyes wondered around the dinner as Sam spoke. She was brought to attention by the lone man, drinking. 'Hmm...he's intesting. I'll give him that. Lynn shook her head, and leaned against the seat. 'Well, best not to attract attention. Of an axe murder or not.' These last words were sent to Sam with a frown, although her eyes sparkled in amusement.

Lillian nodded her head at her sisters' choices of meals, continuing to look over the menu. "I'm going to have a cheese burger with onion rings. With Dr. Pepper to drink." She projected to her sisters. Lillian never spoke aloud unless she absolutely had to. From lack of use, her voice was a little raspy. It was just easier for her to communicate silently the way she did. When her Sam mentioned a guy, Lillian followed her line of sight curiously. She couldn't help but to giggle, a hand covering her mouth. "Yeah, he does." She agreed with Sam. A few moments later, the waitress came to take their orders. Lillian glanced at her sisters, hoping one of them would order for her so she wouldn't have to talk. She'd learnt from experience, that strangers freaked out when she projected her thoughts to them, and they were trying to blend in, not stick out.

"This for me, that for Lil..."

The waitress would come to their table conveniently just after they had all decided what they were eating. "Afternoon, girls." She began. Once she caught sight of Sam, her gaze quickly averted over to Lillian. "What can I get for you all today?"

Sam had noticed her gaze, how quickly it ran away from the girl. Rather than feel insulted, she would smile. "Well, hey there, beautiful." That smile was definitely playful. "I want a BLT sandwich, gimme some fries and a root beer with that too, will you, doll?" She wasn't afraid to call the waitress by names like that. It demanded her attention with the faux flirting, forced her to keep her eyes on Sam. The spotlight that Sam so loved was hers. "The two bombshells here will have a salad," she pointed at Lynn and then at Lillian, "And she'll have a cheeseburger with onion rings and a Dr. Pepper. And that'll be it, gorgeous. Thanks a bunch."

The waitress would get out of there and back to the kitchen ASAP, more than likely weirded out by a small crippled girl tossing compliments at her with the orders. Sam would snicker and turn to her sisters. "I guess she doesn't swing that way. What a shame." It was obvious she was being sarcastic and just enjoyed the attention she got. This was typical of Sam. Flirting with people who would turn their gaze away from her. She would only keep her smirk and check out the 'axe murderer' again, admiring his beard. It was pretty impressive. She liked it. "Think he's a lumberjack or something?"

Lynn smiled as Sam flirted with the waitress while ordering for them. Out of the three of them, Sam was most definitely the most comfortable talking to strangers. There was no way Lillian would, and Lynn's word were always followed with an untrusting look. She couldn't help it, but anyone but her two sisters she couldn't help but think they were spys for the lab.

As the waitress hurried away, obviously flustered by Sam's words, Lynn's gaze when back to the supposed 'axe murderer'. 'Maybe he's just a normal dude with a dashing beard? Or someone from the circus?' She covered her mouth to hide the giggles that treated to burst out. This was something nice. To sit and talk without fear of anyone attacking them, or looking at them in fear.

Lillian placed her hand over her mouth, trying not to laugh as Sam flirted with the waitress. The flustered look on the woman's face was priceless. Once the woman left and her sisters' looked once more at the strange man sitting at the bar, Lillian picked up a napkin and started to slowly tear it apart, keeping her hands busy. "Maybe one of us should see if they're hiring here?" She projected, not looking up from the shredded napkin that she continued to tear into smaller pieces, and smaller still until she couldn't tear them anymore. She knew she would have to get used to speaking aloud if they're going to be around regular people a lot, but she wasn't looking forward to it.

"Alright, alright, I got it..."

Sam would nod at her sister and give a sarcastic sigh. "I'm the one with the people skills here, I guess. Go figure." And she would stick her tongue out playfully before fishing out her crutches and standing them up to get herself up. "I'll be back in a minute, girls. Probably before the food." With a grunt, she would set her left leg forward and moved over to the bar. She intentionally sat next to the bearded man and leaned her crutches up against the bar to her right before asking the barkeep for the manager. They would nod and make their way to the back. This was when she would take her time to talk to the man beside her. With a grin, she would turn to him and nudge his arm. "Hey, dude. Your beard is really cool. You been growing it out long?" Yeah, that was her topic of conversation. She didn't even know what it was about beards that she even liked. Maybe it was how tough he looked. Compared to him, she probably looked like a child. And her injuries did no efforts to hide themselves, beyond the eyepatch.

When Sam stood up from the booth a small amount of panic coursed through Lynn. It was stupid, the sane part of her mind told her. After all, she was just across the room. In her sight completely. But still, years of being poked and prodded made her on edge whenever her sisters were out of arms reach. Sighing she leaned back and pinched the bridge of her nose, a headache forming.

'Can't stay near us can she? Has to go talk to everyone she sees...' Lynn mumbled, moving to rest her head on the table. She didn't mean the words in a rude way, but still Lynn had to wonder, would it be so hard to stay low? All she wanted was to see her sisters safe, and happy.

'Hey Lilly, I need to ask. Do you think we can do this? Jobs and such? I'll take as many as I can to get money but I have no idea if anyone will want Sam. Don't tell her that by the way. And if you're uncomfortable with talking you don't have to get one.' Lynn turned her head so it was facing her youngest sister. It was rare for her to ask questions like this, but with Sam away she could spill her fears about this new life.

Lilly watched Sam as she walked across the room and sat down next to the guy they had been talking about moments before. She sighed quietly, turning her attention to Lynn as she spoke. She frowned slightly at her sister's worries. Lilly swallowed hard, opening her mouth as if to talk, but nothing came out. She swallowed once more and cleared her throat before trying again. "W-we don't have a choice." She said, her voice raspy from years of un-use. "We have to make it work." She added. Speaking out loud was strange for her, it'd been years since she's heard her own voice.

As Red finished his fifth drink he tried to ignore the glares he received every time he made eye contact with Big Tony who was now running the bar. At this point Red was feeling pretty light headed, and of course, was rather angry like always. Occasionally he'd eye the man he had yelled at earlier, toying with the idea of roughing him up in the parking lot.

Suddenly though out of the corner of his eye Red noticed the table of three girls behind him shooting giggles and glances his way, in his mind they were probably laughing at his unruly appearance or drunken demeanor. As his fist tightened around his glass in silent anger he did his best to ignore the group, his eyes transfixed on the glass of whiskey in his hand in an effort to take his mind off of his constant nagging anger. He was quickly brought back to reality however by the loud clatter of crutches on counter top.

Curiously he turned to look at the newcomer who was sitting next to him and he immediately recognized her as one of the girls from the table behind him, only he hadn't noticed in the quick glance he'd shot them earlier that the poor girl was missing several limbs and an eye. His face momentarily showed his surprise as he eyed her up and down, however he instantly returned to wearing his almost ever present scowl.

The way she had nudged him and blatantly asked a question that he could tell was honest curiosity and not small talk made him somewhat like her immediately, a fact he wouldn't admit to himself having long ago decided his disdain for most people. Having let out an open chuckle Red quickly downed the remainder of his drink before responding. "Ill tell you that if you tell me if you've ever thought about wearin a peg leg" He asked unafraid in his usual gruff voice, his slightly yellowish cigarette stained teeth grinning behind his beard the whole while. The entire time he waited for a response he stared at her, but not the kind of stare many people would give when faced with a person whose body was so broken, instead he stared at her like she was everyone else in the room-a completely normal person.

Lynn sat up as Lillian spoke, suprised that her sister even used her voice. Although it was a good suprise. If they would survive her she needed to start to speak, but Lynn never could work up the courage to sit her sister down and tell her. 'Lilly...That was good. You spoke. But hey, I don't want you being uncomfortable. I'd be happy to work for the three of us if all fails.' She put a hand on her sisters shoulder and smiled.

'And hey, maybe working at home is a thing? Don't people write books? Or uh, something else?' Lynn took her hand off and when back to leaning on the table. There would be a way to make this work. There had to be. Lynn would make sure of it.

Then, she heard the man speak. She raised her head, and narrowed her eyes at him. Lynn was worried that Sam would do something to anger him, and by the glass held in his hand he was drinking the.same thing some lab workers drank. And it made them act strange.

"Okay. Yeah. He's cool."

Sam did not seem hurt by his question at all. In fact, her smirk only widened. Needless to say, she liked this guy. He didn't try and avert his eyes from her condition or try not to notice it. And he certainly wasn't feeling sorry for her either. "Oh, you know, I did think about that. But the doctors told me that I couldn't get the peg leg without the obligatory parrot and feathery hat. Though I've been working on my pirate talk just in case I ever change my mind." She winked her remaining eye before laughing with him.

"I'll be straight with you here, big guy. My sisters and I were over there talking about how much I like your beard. Are you gonna grow it out longer? Maybe get a lumberjack kind of look going on? I think it'd suit ya." She would nod to herself as if confirming her own thoughts. It was a sage-like nod as if it was some great truth revealed. Looking back at him, she would turn her smirk to a softer smile. "So really, how long you been workin' on that thing? I noticed a lot of bearded guys I've seen drink a lot, too. Does that actually help?" Her tone was serious, asking legitimate questions rather than sarcastic retorts.

'Lumberjack kind of look.' The phrase had made Red laugh out loud, the girl didn't know just how right she was. "Believe it or not I cut wood for a living, hell I'm a regular Paul Bunyon." Red joked as he pointed at the hat that sat atop his head, his finger pointing at the faded red words 'Wood Chuck Inc' stitched atop a little ax.

He found himself absent mindidly nodding along with her as she continued to speak. As he listened his right hand found its way inside the front pocket of his flannel shirt, a pack of Marlboro Reds quickly appearing in his hand. Quickly popping a cigarette into his mouth he proceeded to light the thing with a quick 'Flick" and a "Swish" of an old beat up zippo he had pulled from seemingly out of nowhere. After a particularly long drag off his newly lit cigarette he let the dull gray smoke spill from his mouth, the thick smell of tobacco filling the air around them. A quick skillful shake of his hand was all it took for two or three cigarettes to slightly protrude from the pack he still held in his hand, which he then wordlessly offered to Sam. He was clearly inviting her to a cigarette.

"In all honesty lady Ive lost track, probly been growin this thing a couple years atleast. Kinda just forget its there at this point. As for the alchohol helpin, hell, if that were the case I think I'd be so hairy id look like a damn werewolf at this point." He finally said in response to her question, taking another drag off his cigarette he quickly spoke up again. "So yall from around here?" He asked, nodding his head in the direction of her sisters. "I ask on account of havein not seen any of you around before, aint to big of a town, ya know?"

"He is a lumberjack. He has an axe... Man, it'd be so cool if he were an axe murderer."

Sam's eyes lit up at the sight of the offered cigarette. She practically looked like a child, yet here he was offering her a fix. "Where have you been all my life, big guy? My sisters hate it when I smoke." Happily taking the stick there, she would flick it in his direction as a type of salute before pulling out a simple black Bic lighter and igniting the cigarette. She, too, would take a long, slow drag and watch as the cigarette burned up at the tip a bit before blowing out the smoke in a thin stream. She felt insanely more relaxed now, and any of that soft lingering pain in her leg stub was easily ignored now that she had this to focus on.

When he asked about her sisters, she froze up for a second. "I... Yeah." Her tone dropped a bit as she began speaking. "Our parents recently died. In a car accident... They were driving me home from music class and it was pretty rainy and dark. The accident took my leg and my eye. My sisters decided they wanted to get away a bit, find a place to move on..." She had even built up a little waterwork as she told her false story. "We're originally from Connecticut. A few states down, y'know? They wanted to go some place. So I wouldn't be around to see places and blame myself for mom and dad's deaths..." She took a drag off her cigarette, blowing it in the direction of her sisters. "Sorry, big guy... I didn't mean to dump my life's story on you. Heart's still a little weak. It was just a year ago..." She was really hoping her sisters were paying attention to this little story she was making up.

She cleared her throat and pretended to sidetrack herself from her "sorrow." "Anyway. Um. Who is Paul Bunyon? Some famous woodcutter, I presume? Never heard of him before."

Lynn nodded, her sisters words making sense, although still she didn't like it. When Lilly took another napkin and began ripping the things to shreds again Lynn looked to Sam. Not only were she and the man getting along, but he offered her a smoke. She wrinkled her nose at this. Don't get up. Don't go over there. I swear Lindsay Hope Woods if you do... A groan escaped her lips as she again lost the mental battel to let her sisters branch out. Motioning for Lillian to stay she stood, and walked briskly to her sister and the man.

Stoping next to Sam she eyes the cigarette before gazing at the man. She knew her eyes were filled with distrust. 'Hello sir. Nice to meet you. I see you are getting along with Samantha well?' She smiled politely, although it was forced.

It was clear by the look on Reds face that he had completely believed Sams quickly fabricated story, shaking his head slightly trying to think of just what to say as he continued to smoke his cigarette all he could come up with was a simple. "Damn. Life's a bitch aint it?" The sentence had come off sounding extremely casual and yet oddly sincere, apparently Red wasn't a man of many words.

Her final sentence had caught him completely by surprise however and nearly caused him to fall out of his chair-or maybe it was all the alcohol. Regardless, who in the world didn't know who Paul Bunyon was? "Some famous woodcutter?" He asked, repeating her words in a mock tone clearly enjoying the conversation. "More like THE famous woodcutter. I mean-" He was unexpectantly cut off midsentence by another woman from the table who was now talking to him, he assumed it was one of the previously mentioned sisters. For some reason he didn't quite like the look he was receiving from her, whether it was judging or mistrustful he was pretty sure it was bad. The worst part of it all though was the fake smile plastered on her face, something Red had become an expert at seeing through. He returned her mistrustful gaze with a scowl of his own. "I guess you'd have to ask her." He said bluntly as he stared at her, a fresh cloud of gray smoke lingering between the two of them.

"And here comes the party pooper... I know she means well, but damn."

The very sound of her sister's voice would cause Sam's expression to drop to one of obvious annoyance. Luckily for her, she dropped her head until it went away. "Oh, would you look at that? One of my lovely sisters has come to introduce herself before I get the chance!" She laughs softly and leans over to wrap an arm around her sister's waist. "This here is Lynn. Real easy on the eyes, hm?" She winked at him almost sarcastically. Her head was hugged into Lynn's side to prohibit her from seeing the wink. Turning her head up to Lynn, she would nod and give her a smile. "Yes, we're getting along. Really well, actually. I had just told him about the car accident and how losing mom and dad brought us here... And guess what? He totally is a lumberjack. He's like a big teddy bear." She laughed and relinquished her hold of her sister in exchange for another drag on her cigarette. She flicked the ashy tip into an ashtray and sighed. "He was about to tell me who Paul Bunyon was. Before we were interrupted." She was subtly telling her sister to leave her be. She was enjoying the independence of talking to another without the leash and collar of her sisters.

The manager, Big Tony as he was called, would approach from behind the counter. "I hear you's was looking for me, little girl? Sam would look up to him with a smile.
"Actually, yes! My sister here was admiring your diner. She was looking about getting a job here. Perhaps you'd be willing to give her an interview?" She leans in closer to the big owner and whispers "She's a real busy body. Always doing something productive. And look at how gorgeous she is, eh? She's probably as pretty as that waitress serving us. Consider it, please. Sir." With that, she relaxed back on her stool and rolled her eyes at Red, obviously about her sister.

Lynn Woods

Lynn knew her sister was annoyed. She always waz when Lynn became a hovering mother hen figure. But that was something she couldn't help. Her sole purpose as the oldest was to keep her sisters safe. Sam wraps an arm around her waist, and says something that causes her to blush on cue. 'Easy on the eyes?' This was whispered, and Lynn was caught off guard until Sam sent her a smile.

She got the lie at once. 'Yes. Our parents. Mom and dad... Lynn gazed at the ground, hoping the sad look she put on looked real enough. Then, as Sam was hinting for her to leave, a large man who she assumed was the owner came up. He spoke to Sam who in turn made an attempt at getting her a job. And working here was something she didn't mind. It was better her here anyway. She didn't want her sisters working someplace that served the liquid the lumberjack man was drinking.
