Faecleir

Faecleir

0 INK

The descendants of fairy tale notables must save their kingdom from an invading empire. This is continuing on where the original Grimm and Perrault tales leave off.

7,395 readers have visited Faecleir since daughterofdon created it.

Introduction

In the land of Faecleir, a handful of heroes and heroines overcame imprisonment, curses and rose above their station and became rulers: Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, the Marquis of Carabas, and the Miller's daughter. They enjoyed a golden age of rule. Now these legends and their spouses are aging, but their children, colloquially known as the ‘Ever After Children’ are rising to power and must face the vengeance of their parents’ oppressors.

Queen Briarose was the sleeping beauty of legend. She had two children with the crown prince of Spindewas, Prince Ruffdor. As in the Grimm tale, the prince’s mother was a full-blooded ogress, and she made attempts to eat Briarose and her children. The Ogre Queen was destroyed, and Ruffdor became King. However, the kingdom was not at peace. The Kalgrist Empire is nearest to Spindewas and trouble arose around the border. War was waged between King Ruffdor and Emperor Contalabutte. After eight years of conflict, the Empire has won. Ruffdor was slain and Contalabutte now rules Spindewas and has taken the legendary Briarose as his fourth wife. He has also hunted down anyone with ogre descent. He ousted Briaroses’ children, for they were a quarter ogre. This won him the approval of the Spindish people, for they were suspicious of ogre blood and the dubious legacy of the Ogre Queen.

Dayerin, Briarose’s son, has fled to Matakin, the kingdom of the Dwarves. He has sent messages to other Ever After children, hoping to form an alliance and to prevent the other kingdoms of Faecleir from being conquered.

The Kingdoms:

Spindewas : Land of the Sleeping Beauty, Queen Briarose, who slept in the Castle of the Thorn for 100 years. The kingdom was once lush, with ancient forests and old towns, but it has been left in ruins by war. Of all the kingdoms, it was most friendly with the Ogres.

Matakin : The smallest kingdom, and home of the Dwarves. The Hatchen is the great mountain where the Dwarf king and queen reside, and where dragons are raised. The land is mountainous and craggy.

Effledus: The King is known as Lufgaw, and he takes the form of a Beast, seen by few. This is the kingdom where humans are not welcome, and it is exclusively home to enchanted animals and fey folk. Though there are rumors that King Lufgaw has taken a human wife.

Towerlot: Rapunzel is Queen, married to the once-blind King Graemund. They have twin children. The tower where she was once imprisoned has been turned to a monument and is visited by her subjects. Towerlot is sparse and very rural.

Oglotta: The Ogre kingdom. The land is hot and humid and not at all pleasant for humans. Still, the Ogres have become more civilized over the years and have a culture that is beginning to blossom in their Capitol, Irfblast. The Ogres King and Queen are very rich, as Ogres are excellent at business.

Rumpleir: This is the poorest kingdom, and its chief industry is the growing of wheat. Their Queen Sarayn was once a peasant, a miller’s daughter in fact. Her father boasted that she could spin straw into gold. With the help of Rumplestiltkin, she was able to do so and married the King. She almost lost her firstborn, if the little man had not fallen through the floor.

Mewhaven: Ruled by King Storkfort. This king’s daughter is married to the influential Marquis of Carabas, and they live in a castle once inhabited by ogres. The kingdom is known for its population of intelligent talking cats, which are treated almost as an equal to humans.

Three winged shadows landed upon the choked soil outside of Castle Spindewas. The lead of the three winged creatures bowed his head to Contalabutte. With his croaky, aged voice Bujinnor the dragon - traitor adressed his master. "My lord, ive brought you the Darahurne. They seem eager to go. Shall i accompany you to their eyrie?" The armoured dragon asked. "Oh yeah, sure, the guys'll love a DRAGON coming to our hideout. You know, our mortal enemy? The creatures that sired individuals such as Meledim, Wurmen, Malagolos and......Mortimus? Those guys who performed such deeds as locking the elder race away from us? Who helped the empire to shove us out of our homeland? Who locked away our GOD? Yeah, theyll be over the godamn moon!" " Vrael muttered behind Bujinnor. Bujinnor pretended not to listen. He had heard it was better not to cross Vrael, it was said that Vrael was more sadistic than he and Contalabutte put together, plus Bujinnor could tell that the creature was gleefully insane. Bujinnor and his master had no time for such creatures. Bujinnor frowned and looked straight at his master, sending a message to his mind; "Mi'lord, i don't trust these two, honestly, i saw them in the Gnome slums before i picked 'em up. They were squashing gnome babies for a laugh! I highly recommend you let me come with you. I don't want to find out that you died. None of your children like me like you do. Id be a terrible advisor to them if one of them inherited the throne. Actually, come to think of it, youre the only person i know who likes me, so don't die. I'd have to go back to Matakin and Malagolos will have me killed. As i said, i want to come with you." Bujinnor cast a distrustful glance to Tael, who gave him a playful wave. He adored his master, he knew he was probably one of the few people who did, he wasn't going to lose his only 'friend' to the creatures who brought sorrow to his race for years on end. No, hed go with him, and pull any scum apart who made even an inch of a move on his master.

Vrael stepped out from behind Bujinnor. "C'mon gramps, move aside, let me speak to the man. Mi'lord, you didnt whistle. You made everything really boring, we were gonna appear in ash and brimstone and everything. Oh well, we're here now, and if this big lug is coming along i suppose you can follow us on the way. I believe theres room for both you and little beauty there on his back, if your breathe in, that is. That won't be hard for Briarose, such a dainty little flower is she." Tael nudged her brother/lover and hissed under her breath so that no one could hear. "Behavvvveee loverrrr boooyyyyy!" She smiled. "Sheeee issss prettttyyy thouuuughhhhh."

Vrael strode towards Contalabutte and presented him with a saliva covered badge that had belonged to the Fae guard hed eaten on his little trip. "Had a little visit to Effledus a few hours ago. Youll find out how very soon, but you might like to know that Day is still there, but i have a feeling he won't be there long. I assure you well catch him. There a man on the job right now. Or should i say Darahurne. Not a stupid scout, mind, this guys like nightmare incarnate. His name is Nebuleir. Youre both very alike, or at least you WILL be, very soon." He said mysteriously. "Now, little flower." He said, turning to Briarose." Shall we departeth?"

Day was beginning to feel sick himself as Mortimus took a lifetime to empty his dragon-size stomach. He looked away, closed his eyes, but even the noise made his stomach turn.

Captain Tipst, also, was disturbed by the violence of Mortimus’ nausea. The mess in this hall made his head spin. He hated mess. But his little exchange with Bettina, at least, had taken his mind off of his filthy surroundings for a bit. Her upbringing--at least, only her first five years--was very interesting to hear about. Rumplestiltskin was a Fey hero in Tipst’s mind, he had been talked up a great deal in Eswern, the island of political prisoners. Of all fey, the Great Rumplestiltskin had exacted the most revenge on the human race.

“What a shame, lady human, that you could not have known him longer,” Tipst voiced, and his tone came out more earnest than the earlier things he had said to her. He chewed his lip, thinking of the fey blood splattered on her human girl face. And then Mortimus was asking him about the owner of said blood...

“That poor creature’s name was Tinholm,” Tipst answered soberly. “He had a small family, yes... a wife and two daughters... you can be certain I will tell everyone he will be avenged.” A new emotion took hold of Tipst... humiliation. He dreaded when news of this would disseminate, and everyone would wonder why Captain Tipst had done nothing to save Tinholm, his friend. To tell them that Vrael had been too fast and caught them all by surprise would just not be good enough, he feared.

When Mortimus left with Day, Tipst cast an eye about the hall and almost had a heart attack. Mess was not the word for it... it was a disaster.

“Time to assemble a clean-up crew,” Tipst sighed. Eth his pixie took a cue from that and zoomed away to start recruiting. He turned to follow, but stopped to speak again to Bettina and ‘Enry. “Tell me, human and Sir Feline, you both seem to know Mortimus. Does this sort of thing happen on a regular basis with him?”

---

Day followed Mortimus, stumbling a bit over his own feet. He still felt in control of his faculties, except for the whole walking thing. But he made it to the secluded spot where Mortimus led him.

“The pixie, of course, of course,” Day echoed. His tongue felt thick, his throat dry. He lifted the little creature up. It was a fuzzy glowing shape in his vision, swimming, distorted. “Stop dancing ‘round, okay, li’ pixie...? Stay put so we can hear your message...”

The pixie, tired of waiting clutched in the prince’s hands, launched into the message. It was in the voice of his mother, Briarose... speaking shakily and softly.

My dearest son,
I send you wishes from Spindewas. The Emperor has, in his compassion allowed me to send a message to you my son to tell you I am well. I find myself surrounded by new ladies in waiting, graciously provided by the Emperor. I have been allowed to remain in my rooms and the Emperor has brought his family and servants to live here with me. I do not lack for company.

Pause.

I hope this message finds you and your sister well. My heart is lightened at the thought of you both safe.

Pause.

Best wishes to you my son and please, let your sister know that I think of you both daily. Take care of each other.

Your mother,
Rose.

The pixie flitted away, her message complete. Dayerin took a faulty step backwards and crashed into a side table, the resulting clang of a candelabra matching the calamity he felt inside him.

“How does she know!? I’m not with Morn! How does Mom know? Oh, Morn!” he despaired incoherently, holding his head.

Aquila

Things are moving too quickly she thought, not for first time that day. The queen’s stomach was larger every time she saw her, a Darahurne had attacked the castle and now another had somehow possessed Mortimus and killed a guard. They had only just decided to fight in this war and they already had a casualty.

She had reflexively flown up when the dragon had snatched at its victim. The guard was dead before she could make a conscious reaction. She didn’t want to harm Mortimus, but she was ready to dive nonetheless; if the dragon made for anyone else she would go for the eyes. It probably wasn’t the best strategy, but they were the only body part she was certain she could pierce. Vrael made no more moves though, he was content to simply mock and threaten.

After Mortimus had vomited some more he made his apologizes to everyone and went off with the prince of Spindewas. The Mewhaven girl was all riled up over the dragon’s departure and Aquila was leaning that way herself. The dragon had yet to explain anything that had happened in the last few minutes. He said he would tell them soon, but with the way things were going any number of things might happen before “soon” came. Not to mention the fact that after what he had just done he could be considered a threat to anyone near him. Still, for all his silliness Mortimus was wise and caring. He wouldn’t just casually go off with Dayerin if he was worried about being possessed again. She said as much to Tipst when he voiced concern for the matter.

“Mortimus is very sentimental, Tipst. He wouldn’t stay so close to all these people if he thought that might happen again. Still, he owes us a proper explanation and I don’t think he should be allowed to stay in Effledus much longer. We may be in this battle now, but that doesn’t mean we’re ready to fight and these Darahurne seem drawn to him in particular.”

Queen Rapunzel released a surprised laugh when Sereya spoke of being pregnant for “a matter of hours.” Since Sereya also laughed, she assumed it was joke. Rapunzel had heard of a lot of odd things in her life, but a gestation of less than day was not one of them.

But Rapunzel had the feeling that Sereya was not kidding. She looked down at Sereya’s belly again and she could literally see the fabric stretch as the belly grew.

“It can not be...” she breathed, her eyes growing large. “Sereya, has someone put an enchantment on you?” Rapunzel knew that her friend had never really been normal, as her extraordinary beauty marked her as belonging to a league all her own. But having beast children that grew at this rate??

At that moment, a pixie whizzed towards them. It was Eth, Captain Tipst’s pixie wearing her leaf armor and helm. The pixie came to halt so she could best address King Lufgaw and Queen Sereya.

“Your Majesties,” the pixie said in her high-pitch trill of a voice. “A guard has been killed in the Eastern hall! A darahurne took control of Mortimus and devoured the guard! And Your Majesty, Mortimus is alone now with the Prince of Spindewas!”

Mortimus put his paw on his godson's shoulder.
"Be at Peace, things'll be ok. However, i do believe Briarose has been made to send a message. If we reply now then the Empire may know things that we'll regret later. Basically, its a nasty ol' trap, as hard as it is. However, there is a way to send a message to her without the Empire suspecting anything. First up though, i can tell how Bearded you are. It wont work if your all hazy. Hold on, this won't hurt at all."
Then he put his paw on Dayerin's face, lightly as to not squish him, and strained. A white wisp flew out of Dayerin's nose. It floated into the air and dissipated, completely harmless.
"There we go, you should be as right as rain now. Sorry about the suddenness of that." Mortimus said "Now, about the message, Mr or Mrs Pixie...."
"Lord Dragon, I'm a boy. My name is Wabbadackadingleruff" the small pixie squeaked, a bit shocked at being addressed in such a manner. Like a living being.
Mortimus chuckled "Lord? Wow, thats new. Call me Mortimus, or Proffessor Mortimus, or Mr Mortimus. Bettina's fond of calling me a big headed simpleton. Not really fond of that. Then again, i call her Miss Grumpy Face, sometimes, so i guess i deserve it after such a heinous insult to her pride. Also, what kind of name is that? Wabbadacka......whattle? Can we just call you Wabb, or Wabba, or Mr W? Mr W's kind of cool, has a ring to it."
"I don't like it." said the pixie
"Do I give a damn, Mr W? No i do not, Mr W. Ok, Mr W. I need you to clear your mind and be calm, Mr W. Can you do that, Mr W?" Mortimus asked, smiling.
"Yeah, you big headed simpleton, i can manage that." the pixie said, trying to keep a straight face. Then he let his mind go blank, and Mortimus pointed a claw at his head. The pixie screwed his eyes up as a sharp pain hit his brain, as if something had been searching for something within it and was now retrieving the thing. Suddenly a glowing blue ball floated out of the pixies tiny ear, twice the size of its head, and floated into Mortimus' outstretched paw.
"What is it?" asked the pixie.
"Its Briarose's essence, Mr W. Or a clone of it, anyway. Pixie magic, it never fails to astonish me. I extracted it from the message she gave you, Mr W. Now, next step. Hold still, Mr W. Mul' Tulvar turim!"
When Mortimus spoke those words of ancient power, the pixie glowed for a second.
"What just happened?" asked the pixie
"Well, lets just say you won't have to go back to the emperor, Mr W." Mortimus smiled. This Mr W joke wouldn't get old if he still found it funny.
"You mean....I'm......I'm free?" the pixie gasped.
"Yup, one hundred percent, fruit de doop, accurate, no artificial colours or preservatives, take these pills three times a day, give me all your money, scumbag free, Mr W. Go, frollick in the wilderness, go to your folk in the Effledusian forests and have a great life, Mr W."
"BY THE GODESS! THE NITWIT MADE ME FREE! NO MORE STUPID EMPEROR OR CAGES. I'M A WILD PIXIE NOW!!!" the pixie hollered at the top of his tiny voice. "Oh, thank you! THANK YOU mr Mortimus, sir, words cannot even begin to express what good you have done for me. I promise from now on to openly oppose the empire and those Darathings. I'll help whenever i can. Let it be known that Mortimus, big headed elder dragon of Matakin, has become Pixie friend. So says Wabbadackadingleruff, who shall now be known as Mr W!"
Then he flew away, weeping with joy.

"Well." Mortimus sighed "Thats my good deed of the day. I'm pixie friend now. What a curious moniker. Anyway, take this essence. Tap it twice, and speak into it, and the message will be sent straight to your mothers mind. You can use it as many times as you wish. Arent i a clever dragon?" He then handed Dayerin the ball of light, and turned towards the corridor.
"I need to tell you something. All of you. Its about my possession. I was going to just tell you but i changed my mind. Ill tell the others to come now."
Then he sent a mind message to Aquilla, Tipst, Oriana, Quinn Jinn, Bettina and 'Enry, telling them to come, but to not alert the king or the guards. This was serious business. The fate of Faecleir hanged in the balance.

Sir Branen Stonewall of Spindlewas was so far quite frustrated by his stay in Mewhaven, and the lack of straight answers he had been given by the feline population in Carabas was a contributing factor. No one would tell him anything regarding Bettina of Mewhaven, not if they knew her, or if they knew where she was, or if she was even alive. Their refusal to answer the last question left the young knight with a particularly tight knot of anxiety in the pit of his stomach. Branen had no right to feel this way, he knew that, but the thought of the beautiful, sarcastically witty, and damaged girl he remembered being dead filled him with such a sense of overwhelming grief he could hardly stand it. She could rage at him when he found her, slap him even or call him names. He deserved that much, especially as he was seeking her out now for a favor he had no right to ask, but he simply prayed she would be alive to do those things.

In the end, it had been Snow’s tears after the twentieth cat had refused to tell them whether or not Bettina was alive that had given them their lead. An old woman with a kindly, though troubled, face had told them to seek out the legendary Puss in Boots. That task had been easy enough, though their welcome once they’d found the famous feline had not exactly been warm. It had not been until they’d been taken to meet a young blind woman, and she had announced that they would have a role to play in fighting the Empire, were they allowed in the palace, and they had been shut up there ever since. Puss had at least told them that Bettina was alive, and that she worked for him (which had come as a surprise to Branen, though he knew not why), but informed them they were not to refer to her by that name. That response had baffled Branen, but the infurating feline had not designed himself to answer any more of his questions, and Neither Bran, nor Snow had seen him since they had been ushered away to their guest quarters three days ago.

It therefore came as a bit of a shock to Branen when they were suddenly both summoned to the hall, and the young knight wasted no time getting himself ready whilst his sister practically vibrated with excitement. He could think of no other reason for them to be summoned besides Bettina, and Bran felt almost nervous as they made their way down to the main hall. The sight that greeted him however, was not the petite curvaceous woman with golden curls he had expected, but instead the tall athletic figure of a woman he had met only a handful of times, but was never likely to forget.

“Your highness!” Bran exclaimed in shock, quickly taking a knee in front of his princess to show her his fealty. Taking the cue from her brother, snow also made a polite curtsy with her head bowed.

“Might I present to you ‘ighness, Sir Branen Stonewall and Lady Snow Stonewall of Spindlewas. I do believe zey ‘ave been searching for you.” Puss introduced in a manner that came off as almost bored. His dislike of the young knight was fairly transparent, but just because he thought Bran was an uptight, overly moral cur who had no right to come seeking Bettina out now, did not mean the man did not have a value or purpose in this war. Princess Mornalee need all the loyal knights and fighters she could gather, and the ever moral Sir Branen came free.

Contalabutte surveyed the courtyard outside of Castle Spindewas, pleased that it looked so miserable. The servants were stressed, unhappy, losing their hair and aging before his eyes. Even the prickly roses seem to wilt in despair. Briarose should be glad to leave her castle of 120 years for a bit.

He watched the dragons land, which was very much routine for him. Bujinnor, his dragon, was a familiar sight. Like Bujinnor, Contalabutte ignored Vrael’s spiteful muttering. He listened closely to the message from Bujinnor, delivered in the privacy of his mind. Contalabutte did not like servants that were repetitive about their messages, but Bujinnor was the exception. He appreciated his dragon and the adoration he showed.

‘You will be coming with us, Bujinnor. My trust in the Darahurne is lessening every moment I spend with them. But we can not forget their value as allies. We must humor them,’ Contalabutte returned a telepathic message to Bujinnor. He was not so skilled as the dragon in doing so, and so his mental speech was simple and halting.

After a bout of commentary, Vrael gave Contalabutte a slick and gooey badge. Contalabutte’s face torqued in disgust as he held the thing. It was worth an examination, though, as he saw that it was Fey-made and originated from Effledus’s royal palace.

“That is most interesting, Vrael, about your trip to Effledus. I look forward to finding out just what you mean,” the Emperor replied duly, handing the wet badge back to the Darahurne. When Vrael addressed Briarose, Contalabutte noticed that his wife stepped closer to him. He surmised that the Darahurne, ugly creatures that they were, must frighten her a bit.

“You may address my wife as Empress Briarose,” Contalabutte snapped at Vrael. Then he cleared his throat and tenderly touched Briarose’s arm. “Bujinnor and I will keep them in line, my love.”

With that said, he gestured towards Bujinnor’s middle, where a team of servants awaited to help them aboard the elaborate saddle, which was built up with a canopy to provide shelter to the riders. It was similar in structure to a litter, except it was powered by a dragon and not humans. It was very secure as well, with armored walls like the dragon, and there could be seen inside the windows many silken cushions to recline on.

“Ladies first,” Contalabutte insisted to Briarose, handing her off to the servants to be lifted into the saddle. Another dragon was being boarded with Briarose’s ladies in waiting. The third was being loaded with their luggage.
---
Briarose wasn't even aware that she had stepped away from the Darahurne. Contalabutte's hand on her arm made her turn. Empress. The word sounded forgein to her ears. She was Princess and then Queen. It didn't matter what she thought, Contalabutte wanted an Empress and so he had taken another one.

She looked almost blankly to where he gestured. The dragon it seemed was her transportation to the mountains. This one seemed to be under Contalabutte's control. This one she knew for it had helped him win against her husband, it had helped Contalabutte kill him and take his kingdom. Now she was expected to ride on him. Her hand was passed to a servant's who began to help her into the structure on the dragon. Compliant, Briarose let both her husband and the servant move her as they would.

"I am sorry Ruffdor."

Briarose's eyes moved back to the darahurne. She watched them through the window as she manouvered her dress. It was tucked to one side and Briarose sat on the cushions.

It was warm and comfortable and in different circumstances she might have dozed off. Briarose was far too conscious of how small the space was, how close Contalabutte would be to her once he joined her inside.

Her eyes closed and the image of the pixie messenger in its cage came forth in her mind's eye. The thing sitting behind the bars, just as she sat now.

A shiver overtook her. The pixie, her message. Briarose had no way of knowing if and when Day would get the pixie or what his reaction might be.

"Mortimus protect them...please." She wished the dragon could hear her.

Her hand clenched as she heard what sounded like another person climbing into the litter with her. Briarose turned her head, her eyes looking towards a window. Under her she could feel a faint movement as the dragon shuffled his feet and took his breaths.

It was not at all like being on horse back or in a carriage but an odd mix of the two. Briarose blinked. "Must not sleep." She wondered if the tea she had drunk had more than herbs to stimulate her appetite in it. It wouldn't be the first time that the kitchen had tried to ensure her rest.

"Little flower..." She gagged a little. Briarose could still hear the darahurne's voice in her head.

--

As Briarose was settled into the litter, Contalabutte thought back on what Bujinnor had told him, speaking that he feared for his life. The Darahurne were not creatures worthy of trust, as powerful as they were. And Contalabutte knew that he would not feel secure unless he had his most trusted General along with him.

“Franste,” Contalabutte turned to his chief advisor. “Has General Alcide received my summons?”

“Yes, Emperor. I sent a message to him the moment you mentioned it,” Franste replied dutifully.

“Good. We will not leave without him,” Contalabutte said, throwing his lavish cape to the side with a flourish. He narrowed his eyes and stared at the horizon. He often thought of General Alcide, wondered about him. The man held the title of the Greatest Swordsman of the Empire--everyone spoke of how he was impossible to beat, how he wielded the sword of an ancient king. His name was always on someone’s lips. He was so good--too good. Contalabutte couldn’t help but wonder how Alcide would fare in a fight with the Darahurne.

“Your highness!”

Mornalee turned around to see a man with thick brown locks of hair approaching her. He was accompanied by a lady that had a similar resemblance to him. It was as though Morn knew who they were, but she had no memories of them. Puss's next words explained why she had such a feeling.

“Might I present to you ‘ighness, Sir Branen Stonewall and Lady Snow Stonewall of Spindlewas. I do believe zey ‘ave been searching for you.”

Spindewas. Her home country. More hope poured into Mornalee's heart. It was as if fate was on her side.
"Wait, wait, wait!!!" a voice boomed. It was Jude. "I don't understand....'your highness'? Skylar of the Sword is a knight, a vigilante. She does things for others who cannot do things for themselves. She is not a royal. She never has been. It makes no sense....everything. Everything that everyone has said is starting to make no sense. Things just aren't going in the right order. So either you all have claimed her to be someone else by mistake......or Skylar of the Sword is someone else. I ask you, Miss Skylar, just......who are you??"

Carlos tugged on Jude's shirt, but the 14 year-old stood his ground. Mornalee turned to face Jude. Her eyes were sympathetic. She sighed, and said,
"My dear child, I will explain everything later. For now, I must ask of you three to depart from the room. There are important matters i must discuss with Sir Branen and Lady Snow Stonewall."

The three children left the room quickly and quietly. Carlos and Issie fled to their rooms, while the determined Jude stayed by the door, peering his eye through the slight crack in the door.

"Now," Mornalee began to say, "It is a pleasure to meet you both. I am very interested in the reason why you both have been searching for me. Tell me, what is the purpose of your visit to the castle today?"

Having the Beard sucked out of him was the weirdest thing. It was uncomfortable, disconcerting, and Day strained against the dragon’s paw on his head. It felt like Mortimus stuck a feather up through his nose, tickled his brain, and then brought it back out again. Day coughed as the wisp escaped him and then covered his face with his hands and leaned over.

“Holy beanstalk, Mortimus! Agh!” Dayerin coughed. “That didn’t feel that great.” He rubbed his nose, hoping to make that ticklish, shivery feeling in his brain go away.

After that initial shock, though, Day felt the perks of coherence. Mortimus’ interference also seemed to take away some of his drunkenness. Though, witnessing the bizarre conversation between Mortimus and the pixie, he still felt like he was under the influence. When Mortimus conjured a glowing ball out of the pixie’s ear, Day shook his head. What was sobriety worth when what was going on was worthy of an Airy Moss hallucination?

When Mortimus said that the glowing ball was his mom’s essence, Day’s face froze, unsure if this was a joke. He watched, stunned, as the pixie was freed, swore loyalty to their cause, and then flitted away.

Day, feeling sober but disoriented, held the glowing blue ball in his hands. He stared at it, trying to come to terms with the fact that this could connect him directly to his mother. Relaying a message to a pixie was strange enough, but could he grasp talking to an abstract glowing orb, and having his communication be instantaneous and telepathic? The possibilities were vast and frightening... but also too promising not to experiment with. What if he could also talk to his sister in this way? If only she sent him a pixie...

“Okay, sure, thanks Mortimus,” he mumbled, transfixed by the orb and only partially hearing what Mortimus said.

The prince closed his eyes and pretended he was in the same room as his mother, that suddenly she was there. What would he say to her?

With his eyes closed, he was far more convinced that the orb was her essence. It felt like she was there. He could even smell her. It was such a comforting presence, that he moved near the wall and curled up with the ball. Its blue light illuminated his face. With his eyes still closed, he spoke close to it:

“Hey, Mom...” he began, tentatively. “Can you hear me? Don’t freak out... it’s Day.”

---

“Your reasoning is entirely sound, Lady Aquila,” Captain Tipst pronounced. He had been floating near Bettina and ‘Enry, but was pleased that Aquila was the first to answer. His wings drew him closer to her. She made him nervous, this wise, beautiful eagle-woman. He had pixies in his stomach, it felt like. But after this ordeal, he felt more at ease in addressing her.

“It is no wonder to me how my Lord King Lufgaw chose you as his greatest advisor, my Lady,” Tipst complimented whole-heartedly. “You’ve been unflappable during this situation. And your ideas on what to do with Mortimus... could not be improved. He is clearly a security risk to Effledus.”

He frowned again at the mess below them. “Of all days for this to happen, the Queen’s celebration!”

It was at that time that Tipst felt a ping in his head. There was a message, someone trying to impart something to him telepathically. It was rather rude to impose a message like that without prior consent, like an unsolicited call. But Tipst put down his mental guard in slightly annoyed curiosity, with a guess that it was Mortimus.

It was strange, suspicious, that Mortimus did not want the King brought to this briefing. ‘I think the King ought to know, Mortimus. He is the most important citizen of Effledus,’ Tipst returned a mental message. ‘But I shall come, and hear what you have to say.’ He turned to Aquila. “Were you contacted by Mortimus just now, as well?”

Despite the news brought by the pixie, Rapunzel was focused on Sereya. She remembered her own pregnancy, those years ago, and saw the waves of pain beginning to hit the young Queen. It was not wise to doubt when a pregnant woman announced that she was going into labor.

Rapunzel had a sense of disorganization as she looked about her. There was all this bustling and chaos in Effledus, what with the party and the Darahurne breach. She could not help but feel that the Queen was being overlooked. She decided to take charge. King Lufgaw may be at hand, but this was not his domain.

“Sereya, you don’t need your husband--you need a midwife,” Rapunzel told her. She wrapped her arm around the Queen to give her support. “Airna, dear, why don’t you come with us and support her other side?” She beckoned to her daughter. She also called out to some servant women who were carrying plates of food past.

“The Queen needs help! Show me to her birthing chamber!”

With this pronouncement, they were now flocked with attendants. Even if they had to half-carry Sereya, Rapunzel was determined to get her to a private and comfortable chamber. “Come along, Sereya. Walking will help. And try to slow your breathing...”

---

Liryamm, in the meantime, caught a familiar scent in his nose. It was briny, aquatic, pleasing like underwater flowers. It was also reminiscent of his mother’s sea cave... a place he would approach with caution.

Lir drew nearer to the scent, drifting away from the group. He could see beyond the hall into a walkway where Fey folk and enchanted animal folk ambled. These were the guests going to the dining hall, for the celebration.

The whiff of the ocean came from a figure that glinted in the magic fire-lit torches. Her skin was layered with fine iridescent scales. Her back was retreating, weaving among the others, and yet it appeared that she was walking... on two legs.

Liryamm was intrigued. Perhaps this Mer-smelling creature was like him, and had through some circumstances lost her fin. He passed a look back at his company. Nanji seemed to be unoccupied.

“You go to the party?” Lir asked him in halting Dafarzian.

Ainra nodded to her mother and helped her take Sereya to the birthing chamber. "Mama, She will need ta stand. I'm afriad t'a child has already begun ta breach." She told her mother, assessing the situation quickly. She mid-wifed many childern back in Dafarzian. Sometimes, she'd had to help when they had difficult pregnancy. She found that standing made the child come more easily. She knew she should probably find out what the murder was about, knowing her scatterbrained brother had completely forgotten about it but she needed to help Sereya.

Nanji just watched as his mother and sister helped Yaya into the birthing chamber. Nanji rubbed the back of his head, he wasn't sure what to do and then he noticed a beauitful creature walked pass him and Lir. Nanji smirked handsomely. " Who t'at be? She be goregous..." He swooned, nudging Lir and then heard Lir's broken Dafarzian. "Huh?" He said and then what he said resigstered. " Oh, Yea. Might as well. " He said and made his way in to the party. Began talking and mingling, Something he was always good at, dragging Lir along with him.

Sereya attempted to slow her breathing as she waddled and was slightly panting. Her stomache was cramping up horribly. "I dont know if I can make it to the chamber...its all the way across the castle...I need my husband with me, I can't have this baby without him please someone find him" She gasped and frowned when she heard that she was going to have to stand "I dont think I will be able to stand for it my legs feel like they are bout to give out. She bit her lip she didnt know that she was having triplets though it would explain why she was so huge, two girls and a boy did weigh alot.

Tears rolled down her cheeks as she looked at Ainra and Rapunzel "I'm so scared I've never done this before its ...its..." she suddenly passes out her body hurting and convulsing.

Ainra cursed viciously in Dafarzian after Sereya passed out. Ainra lifted Sereya in her arms. Thanks the gods for all her strength training. "By the gods, She'd heavy." She said carring the woman to the birthing bed. "We need a healer! Now!" Ainra ordered in complete future Queen mode. She propped up Sereya's legs and checked. "The child's breached!" She told her mother. "I'm going to have to pull it out." She told her and removed her royal bracelets. A nursemaid approached them with a bowl of boiling water. Ainra didn't have time to sterilze her hands any other way. She dipped her hands in the hot water. "Gah!" She cringed but fought through the pain.

Nanji was flirting with one of the woman at the party when his hands and arms heated up. He supressed a scream. By ta gods, Ai What are you doing? He thought to her. When they were separated, they could send one another their thoughts.

Not now, Nanji, Find the king. Sereya has been rendered unconscious by the pregnancy. I'm about to pull the child out. Ainra told him as she slid her hands in and felt the child's feet. She moved her hands up and under the child and pulled it out. She smiled. "It's a girl." She said as the child wailed. That was a good sign. She looked again and noticed there was more. Ainra's eyes widened. "Mama." She said as a nursemaid cleaned the baby girl. "There's more." She told her and prepared for more.

A hint of a smile played on her face as the fae captain showered her with compliments. It was a familiar scene, but one she had not experienced in quite a while. Then for a moment everyone was quiet, she heard Mortimus’ voice in her head and the silence around her made her assume that the others were hearing it too. Tipst’s question revealed that her assumption was right.

“Indeed I was. Curious that he should request we not alert anyone. I suppose we should hear what he has to say before we leap to strange conclusions though.” She started off in the direction Mortimus had gone, but rather than flying straight to him she waited for everyone else to come along with her.

Alcide was not brooding, he mentally assured himself. He was not a man prone to such lethargic moods, and never would be. Alcide was merely in deep thought as he mulled over the latest conversation he’d had with his friend. Alcide liked to know as much about his enemy as possibly before facing them, and he knew too little for his liking about these Durahurne creatures. Greylord had been of some help to him on this matter, but he still was not satisfied with those answers.

“Your Emperor is either foolish or desperate to be meddling with such dark creatures.” Greylord had warned. Alcide did not altogether disagree with that assessment, but he was not so quick to discredit the power that the durahurne presented. Dangerous or not, it was impossible to deny the effect they had on the war front, which was why Alcide was wary. He’d seen these creatures in action.

“Can they be killed?” He had asked, while Greylord gave a knowing smile.

“All things can be killed my friend” Greylord had replied. “Your sword can cut through anything, even the spawn of hell itself. I have made it so.” Alcide had been a little relieved by that, but he still wished he knew his enemy better.

“So where is my princess eh? If I’m going to die fighting these beasts, I’d like a taste of my reward first.” Alcide had jokingly gripped good naturedly towards his friend. In all honesty he wasn’t in a rush to be married just yet, and especially not to any of Contalabutte’s few daughters. None were particularly comely, and were such spoilt squawking things that they reminded him more of the loud colorful birds nobles in the south kept as pets than a woman who could stir his manhood. He was starting to believe he’d trapped himself into a bad deal on that particular wish, so his friend’s response was surprising.

“Soon my friend, you will have your princess. This war brings her closer and closer to you every day.” Greylord had replied with a smirk he only wore when self-satisfied. The response confused him though, as Contalabutte had no other daughters as far as he knew, so how was there a Kalgrist princess out of his reach that would satisfy his wish?

He did not dwell though, as he soon arrived at the castle via carpet, and announced himself to the men, who knew him instantly. He was quickly led then to the Emperor and the carriage, and Alcide made a quick bow to show his fealty to the smaller man. “You summoned me your eminence?”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Branen felt dumbstruck by his luck in finding his exiled sovereigns so quickly, and rose to attention when his princess addressed him. “I was looking for a friend your highness.” Bran admitted freely. “One I had met long ago who told me she lived here. I was hoping she might keep my young sister Snow safe for me whilst I searched for Prince Dayerin and yourself. A battlefield is no safe place for children.” He explained.

“Your highness, I was gone and unable to aid your father when the Kalgrist hoards descended upon our home, but I will never abandon his children or my home. I am yours to command, whatever your orders.” Branen vowed solemnly.

“Excellent.” Puss remarked dryly.

"General Alicide! In the flesh! By the stars, I'm a big fan. As i am with anything so skilled at killing. Killing is an art form. Us killers are masters at showing it off. May i say that.....you'd make a good darahurne"

He smiled and walked towards the General, rearing up, showing his height, and struck Alicide with his claw

"Come on then, sword boy. Let us sparr. That old fart Bujinnor will take age to get ready, and i want to see those sword skills I've heard so much about. It'll make a good spectacle for the emperor and that stunner next to him, and guess what? I'm not gonna kill you. Yep, I'm showing restraint."

He bared his fangs and snarled "Give me all you've got."

Re: Faecleir

I am back in town again. I hope everyone had a good Christmas and has fun plans for New Year's.

Guess we are still on a hiatus. All good...I will keep waiting.

Re: Faecleir

Haven't heard from DoD in a while so I assume life has taken over. Happens of course. I can't do much till I get a response so...

Putting this here so everyone knows. I am heading out of town starting tomorrow night(providing I can make the nine hour drive after all the snow) I will have my laptop and internet while I am away but not sure how much time I will have to post.

I will check on things while I am away so as not to fall too far behind. I am back home on the 29th, able to post again regularly on the 30th.

Re: Faecleir

Yeah, I'm in the middle of the last three week final stretch with school guys. I try to check in everyday, but posting is going to be limited until after next week.

Re: Faecleir

As a head's up I think DoD and many others? might be busy with the end of semesters and such. I haven't heard from her in a while. Still here but like all the rest of my games I think life has taken the players away for the moment.

Re: Faecleir

Sorry for the bitch slap'n koh lol. Knew youd find it amusing, that's why i did it.

it IS vrael were talking about, after all. Plus it was an intended friendly broslap of spurning (ifbs)

Re: Faecleir

Yes I was wondering how Alcide was going to handle that little banter. Should be....interesting. lol

Re: Faecleir

Understood.

I'm currently trying to formulate a responce to Vrael bitch slapping Alcide out of the blue. haha

Re: Faecleir

Just a head's up Dod and I are working on a joint post since Day and Briar are in a conversation. Doesn't make sense to do a bunch of small posts.

Re: Faecleir

Sorry, I had a bit of Writer's Block but I'm back and ready to post. I still have very little idea about what's going on but I posted nonetheless XD

Re: Faecleir

I'm still here.....

Re: Faecleir

Hello? Is everyone caught up in school? Hope everyone is doing well!

Re: Faecleir

Yay! A sir Branen post!

Also, koh, would it be possible for you to make a character profile for 'Enry? I was just thinking that if he and Bettina are gonna split for a bit we might need one. just a suggestion

Re: Faecleir

ugh late, kinda boring post >< maybe I'll go for another one soon

Ooo, the preview looks great Malice!

And thanks for noticing Noonshine, I managed to get Tipst's profile up. It still won't let me give him an avatar though, turns out the avatar was what was giving me an error message.

I'm trying to think of how to post next for Rapunzel & gang... Going to write for Day as well, but tonight I worked on my joint post with Skulls.

I'm almost done with my drawing of Ainra. I'm gonna scan it for a better view when I'm finished but here's a preview.

Yay Daughter! Tipsts' profile is up!

Re: Faecleir

Glad you are back and okay Mega. I was in New Hampshire when as it was coming in, driving home to Canada and it was a doozy then. I know there were places hit way worse.

DoD I love the tension of Day holding the pixie messenger but not able just yet to hear the message due to the craziness around him. I am eagerly awaiting the results of Mortimus...possession and Bettina/Tipst little conversation. Really want her to call him sparkles again....sorry but that makes me giggle more than it should.

Re: Faecleir

Sorry I've been missing for a few days-- a bit preoccupied by the World Series victory, I was. :D

Koh, a history for Dancleir would be awesome, I had no plans for it. And Mega, you're absolutely welcome to Vasilisa.

The hurricane sounded absolutely crazy--I'm horrified of the photos and news coverage. I'm so sorry Mega! Here's hoping to a speedy recovery for all the East Coast folks.
