The boom that sounded above them was the only warning Bettina got before a part of the ceiling caved it and Mortimus fell through before them. For the second time that day, Bettina found herself flinging herself and ‘Enry away from falling debris, and it was starting to make her grumpy. When she looked up, Mortimus was babbling, and there was vomit on the floor. It took her a moment to realize that it was the dragon’s.

“M-mortimus?!” Bettina choked out, greatly disturbed by the sight before her. She’s had more than her fair share of arguments with the dragon, and there were times when he infuriated her, but he had always been Mortimus, a hero that hovered like an unmovable pillar of strength. If something could reduce him to this, then it was some seriously bad mojo. The scream he admitted alone sounded like something was tearing his insides apart. Bettina was incapable of simply sitting back and watching the scene unfold, and ran to the dragon’s side as he continued to scream about doom and darkness. She was aware of others entering the room, but Bettina didn’t care to acknowledge them in that moment. ‘Enry however, replied in a panicked voice to Aquilla’s inquiry. “I don’t know! ‘E just fell!” The little cat looked close to tears as he watched Mortimus in his state.

“Hey. Mortimus! Hang on, you hear me you scaly overgrown lizard!” Bettina growled, her voiced rough with concern as she placed her hands on his face. Maybe if she tried pouring in some of her own magic, tried to cast a calming glamour

Those thoughts were cut off so suddenly by a great pulsing shock to her body, that she couldn’t even process that thought. She was thrown back with almost violent force, and hit the ground hard, though luckily she hadn’t broken anything. Her whole body felt tense, and Bettina felt shaky, like the magic she worked to keep dormant inside her had been rocked to its core by even the limited contact she’d had with the dark force that was tormenting Mortimus’s mind. It was then, after she’d managed to stand and brace herself against a wall, and under these circumstances that a rather prim and uppity looking Fae man came flying up, offering no help but plenty of judgmental and mistrustful looks. She never trusted fae on principle, but this guy had picked the wrong time to start something with her.

“Technically that’s still in question on my part, but as his high-handedness currently insists on not letting me leave, I’m gonna go with a yes.” Bettina bit out with a condescending smile that bore quite a bit of heat. She felt something shift inside of her, like there was somehow too much magic trying to rein loose than her body could contain, which fae in origin mean the fae man’s presence did nothing to help that. Bettina groaned in pain, trying to beat it down before looking back up at the fae in question. She needed to get him to leave before she started throwing glamour all over the place, which would undoubtedly bring up uncomfortable questions with a fae. The one thing King Lufgaw and Bettina agreed upon was the desire to keep her connection to the famous Rumplestiltskin under wraps. Reaction from Fae in particular were volatile and unpredictable, and she couldn’t handle an interrogation right now.

“So if you’re done asking stupid questions there sparkles, why don’t you try doing something useful, like getting him a doctor!” Bettina gritted out while practically white knuckling the corner of the wall.

Bettina heard rather than saw Mortimus regain consciousness, and she turned with a look of relief that halted when she saw the utterly un-Mortimus like smile plastered across his face. She watched in horror as the thing wearing Mortimus’s face called itself Vrael, and proceeded to rip off the arm of one of the fae guards who’d shown up in response to the commotion. Even as some of the blood splattered across her face, and he proceeded to eat the unfortunate fae, Bettina could do little more than stare.

“How do you-?!” Bettina barely managed to ask before Vrael explained how he could read Mortimus’s mind, and then reached out to her with his magic, ripping the impure taint from her body. The experience left her feeling so violated she thought she might hurl. It wasn’t until he began talking about Rumplestiltskin was she able to stop the shaking, and fear was replaced with anger. Anger she could work with.

“I highly doubt that.” Bettina hissed in a voice that dripped with venom. “Rumplestiltskin didn’t work for anyone but himself, and he sure as magic beans wasn’t catching flak from a bunch or psychopathic wannabe dragons! If you believe that, you’re an even bigger raging lunatic than you look!” Rumplestiltskin was a lot of things, but Bettina would never believe him a lackey, he had too big an ego to ever suffer that. These things obviously lied to try and hurt people she decided, especially after she heard what the monster said to Day.

When Vrael finally retreated from Mortimus, Bettina was practically a vibrating ball of rage. At Mortimus’s demand, she shot her eyes over to the fae captain. “You’re up sparkles.”

“KITTY!” Puss had barely made it through the door and into the hall with Rachelle before little Isabella was upon him, and the aging cat could do little more than laugh good naturedly and pat the little girl affectionately on the back.

“Yez yez, I saw zis. Where is zis lady?” Puss asked before Jude and Carlos came walking up with the woman in question. Now that she was up close, Puss recognized those features. The height, the face, the color of her eyes, Puss knew exactly who it was who stood before him. The princess of Spindlewas may not have recalled seeing him, but puss was always lurking in the shadows, keeping a watchful eye whenever they had visited Spindlewas, or when Ruffdor and his family visited Mewhaven.

Puss listened in silence as Princess Mornalee made her plea to him for his aid, and barely suppressed his lip from upturning in disgust when she made to offer him money like a common mercenary. The girl had much to learn. Once she had finished speaking, Puss gently disentangled himself from Isabelle and cleared his throat as he took a step out.

“Ze ozer kingdoms did no stand by and watch so much as weighed zier options Mademoiselle. Wars bring ruin and disease, and costs a fortune, and no ruler in zier right mind would choose to fight such a war against ze Empire unless ze country itself was threatened. Ze Emperor 'ates Ogres. It is easier to rationalize zat 'is 'atred and opportunity motivated him to kill Ruffdor, and zat 'e will not attack ozers, zan get involved with a potentially unnecessary war. If you wish to sway ozer kingdom to your cause, you will need to give specific reasons why zey should get involved. Ask yourself how zis will benefit zem before you speak. Zat advice I give you free.” Puss lectured as he adjusted his hat and began circling Mornalee.

“I am a very rich cat mademoiselle, and I have no need of your silver. If you wish to bargain such a price for aid, there are always mercenaries and wizards for hire on Dancleir. Go zere if you wish to peddle such a price.” His spine was stiff and his gaze haughty as he spoke, and he stopped his pacing once he was in front of her once more.

“To ‘ave a princess owe a debt to Mew’aven ‘owever, zat is a price I would work for.” Puss finished, his gaze softening with an arched brow.

“So it’s her then? She’s finally come?” Rachelle asked with a soft smile gracing her lips. Puss made a soft humming sound in agreement before turning his head to one of the guards.

“Philip, go retrieved our ozer guests, I believe zey will be very pleased to meet our newest arrival.” Puss commanded, and the guard dashed off to do the cat’s bidding.

Mornalee was devestated and a little bit furious. She had come a long way to search for the cat, and here he was, giving her a lecture about why the kingdoms never got involved. She didn't want to admit it to herself, but she knew everything he said was right. It was almost like suicide for another kingdom to get involved with the Kalgrist empire unless they were threatened. Just like what she had learned from the hunter who taught her the ways of the blade, you do not attack unless your enemy strikes first.

Mornalee looked down in shame as Puss in boots talked about her silver. She realized she was stupid to think that he was like a mercenary. It had never been like the cat to be greedy in the first place. Mornalee knew that offering the silver was like a slap in the face. She wanted to escape her body and run away, but she knew she had to accept her choices and face the consequence. With someone like her, Spindewas would never be freed from Contalabutte.

However, there was something that the cat said at the end of his lecture, something that sparked up Mornalee's hopes again.
“To ‘ave a princess owe a debt to Mew’aven ‘owever, zat is a price I would work for.” he said, his eyes softening. Mornalee was surprised that the cat would be so compassionate and offer her a second chance. She lifted her head and nodded at his words. "Yes" she silently muttered, a determined yet sorrowful look on her face. This time, she wouldn't let her oppurtunities pass by.

Although Mornalee looked at Puss in Boots's words as a chance for redemption, Jude was bewildered. He nudged his brother standing next to him, and whispered, "Did he just call Skylar of the Sword a princess?" Carlos, who couldn't care less, shrugged, and said, "I don't know. Maybe you just heard him wrong or something."

“So it’s her then? She’s finally come?” the lady next to the cat asked with a pretty smile. The cat nodded, and then asked a guard to retrieve other guests,
saying,"... I believe zey will be very pleased to meet our newest arrival.”
Mornalee looked down at the cat with sheer confusion. "Other guests?" she asked, "Who are they?"

As the little pixie zoomed in with a bucket, Bettina closed her eyes for a moment and allowed herself a deep breath in and a long sign out as she slowly sunk to the floor with her back against the wall. Drained but restless was the best way she could describe how she was feeling at the moment and more than anything, she wanted a quiet corner and a nice large hit of beard, but that was as urge she hadn’t indulged in a long time. When she opened her eyes, it was to find the fae man from earlier hovering over her, and she raised a patronizing brow at him in question.

“Oh gee Sparkles, really, you think I’m charming? Now that’s down right flirtatious of you.” Bettina replied with mock enthusiasm and exaggerated eye lash fluttering as the fae began to sneer at her. Snobby little jerk could go take a hike, cause she wasn’t in the mood to talk about her “adoptive daddy” right now, and she knew quite well the name Rumplestiltskin was the only thing bringing the fae her way now. Once he’d delivered his little back handed compliment regarding the darahurne though, her eyes lost some of their fake light heartedness, and instead became more bitter.

“The darahurne are nothing but overgrown bullies with highly inflated egos. They like playing with people’s emotion and seeing your fear. You show a bully fear once, and they own you. So I learned a long time ago to spit in their faces instead. ” Bettina replied with a tight lipped smile as she rose from her position on the ground. “If you want to talk about Rumplestiltskin, find one of the other kids he snatched to interrogate. I was five when he kicked the bucket, so you guess how much I remember.” Bettina lied dismissively. Her eyes flickered over to Day when she heard the hiccup, and she inched a bit closer to his side in a silent show of support. Once Mortimus finished retching however, he began a spiel that was equal parts avoidance and dismissal. After everything they’d just witnessed in the last few minutes, after everything they’d heard, he STILL wouldn’t design himself to tell them what this connection of his was, or at least no one but Day. Not to mention he was acting as if barely anything had even happened! Mortimus had just been possessed by some evil twisted being, tried to psychologically mess with their heads, and killed a fae right in front of them. The blood that had splattered on her face hadn’t even dried yet, and he was cracking jokes!

“You got to be kidding me!” Bettina exclaimed in outrage. She’d left the first time out of both respect and anger, but enough was enough. Mortimus couldn’t just volunteer her for a war and then decide to keep her in the dark because she didn’t make the cut on the scale of importance to him. She was practically vibrating with the anger she felt, when Mortimus sent the mind message, and Bettina visibly reeled from the invasion. Perhaps because of the darahurne’s earlier violation into her mind, she found herself more alarmed by it than called for. Almost on reflex she tried to push back against the invading message. She hated it when people invaded her mind, however benignly as Mortimus was. Still she heard the message, and though she still didn’t think that was a good enough reason to brush them off, at least she now understood why Mortimus was so keen to talk to Day. The kid was drunker than a skunk by the looks of things, and she could smell the beard on him from where she stood, which made him less than lucid for any conversation Mortimus wanted to have with him, But Bettina was too frustrated to care anymore.

“Don’t flatter yourself.” Bettina replied dryly to Mortimus’s second message when it came, with a shake of her head. “One way or another, I heading back toward Mewhaven in the morning. If there’s anything you want me to pass along to Puss tell me before then.”

Aquila

Things are moving too quickly she thought, not for first time that day. The queen’s stomach was larger every time she saw her, a Darahurne had attacked the castle and now another had somehow possessed Mortimus and killed a guard. They had only just decided to fight in this war and they already had a casualty.

She had reflexively flown up when the dragon had snatched at its victim. The guard was dead before she could make a conscious reaction. She didn’t want to harm Mortimus, but she was ready to dive nonetheless; if the dragon made for anyone else she would go for the eyes. It probably wasn’t the best strategy, but they were the only body part she was certain she could pierce. Vrael made no more moves though, he was content to simply mock and threaten.

After Mortimus had vomited some more he made his apologizes to everyone and went off with the prince of Spindewas. The Mewhaven girl was all riled up over the dragon’s departure and Aquila was leaning that way herself. The dragon had yet to explain anything that had happened in the last few minutes. He said he would tell them soon, but with the way things were going any number of things might happen before “soon” came. Not to mention the fact that after what he had just done he could be considered a threat to anyone near him. Still, for all his silliness Mortimus was wise and caring. He wouldn’t just casually go off with Dayerin if he was worried about being possessed again. She said as much to Tipst when he voiced concern for the matter.

“Mortimus is very sentimental, Tipst. He wouldn’t stay so close to all these people if he thought that might happen again. Still, he owes us a proper explanation and I don’t think he should be allowed to stay in Effledus much longer. We may be in this battle now, but that doesn’t mean we’re ready to fight and these Darahurne seem drawn to him in particular.”

Sir Branen Stonewall of Spindlewas was so far quite frustrated by his stay in Mewhaven, and the lack of straight answers he had been given by the feline population in Carabas was a contributing factor. No one would tell him anything regarding Bettina of Mewhaven, not if they knew her, or if they knew where she was, or if she was even alive. Their refusal to answer the last question left the young knight with a particularly tight knot of anxiety in the pit of his stomach. Branen had no right to feel this way, he knew that, but the thought of the beautiful, sarcastically witty, and damaged girl he remembered being dead filled him with such a sense of overwhelming grief he could hardly stand it. She could rage at him when he found her, slap him even or call him names. He deserved that much, especially as he was seeking her out now for a favor he had no right to ask, but he simply prayed she would be alive to do those things.

In the end, it had been Snow’s tears after the twentieth cat had refused to tell them whether or not Bettina was alive that had given them their lead. An old woman with a kindly, though troubled, face had told them to seek out the legendary Puss in Boots. That task had been easy enough, though their welcome once they’d found the famous feline had not exactly been warm. It had not been until they’d been taken to meet a young blind woman, and she had announced that they would have a role to play in fighting the Empire, were they allowed in the palace, and they had been shut up there ever since. Puss had at least told them that Bettina was alive, and that she worked for him (which had come as a surprise to Branen, though he knew not why), but informed them they were not to refer to her by that name. That response had baffled Branen, but the infurating feline had not designed himself to answer any more of his questions, and Neither Bran, nor Snow had seen him since they had been ushered away to their guest quarters three days ago.

It therefore came as a bit of a shock to Branen when they were suddenly both summoned to the hall, and the young knight wasted no time getting himself ready whilst his sister practically vibrated with excitement. He could think of no other reason for them to be summoned besides Bettina, and Bran felt almost nervous as they made their way down to the main hall. The sight that greeted him however, was not the petite curvaceous woman with golden curls he had expected, but instead the tall athletic figure of a woman he had met only a handful of times, but was never likely to forget.

“Your highness!” Bran exclaimed in shock, quickly taking a knee in front of his princess to show her his fealty. Taking the cue from her brother, snow also made a polite curtsy with her head bowed.

“Might I present to you ‘ighness, Sir Branen Stonewall and Lady Snow Stonewall of Spindlewas. I do believe zey ‘ave been searching for you.” Puss introduced in a manner that came off as almost bored. His dislike of the young knight was fairly transparent, but just because he thought Bran was an uptight, overly moral cur who had no right to come seeking Bettina out now, did not mean the man did not have a value or purpose in this war. Princess Mornalee need all the loyal knights and fighters she could gather, and the ever moral Sir Branen came free.

“Your highness!”

Mornalee turned around to see a man with thick brown locks of hair approaching her. He was accompanied by a lady that had a similar resemblance to him. It was as though Morn knew who they were, but she had no memories of them. Puss's next words explained why she had such a feeling.

“Might I present to you ‘ighness, Sir Branen Stonewall and Lady Snow Stonewall of Spindlewas. I do believe zey ‘ave been searching for you.”

Spindewas. Her home country. More hope poured into Mornalee's heart. It was as if fate was on her side.
"Wait, wait, wait!!!" a voice boomed. It was Jude. "I don't understand....'your highness'? Skylar of the Sword is a knight, a vigilante. She does things for others who cannot do things for themselves. She is not a royal. She never has been. It makes no sense....everything. Everything that everyone has said is starting to make no sense. Things just aren't going in the right order. So either you all have claimed her to be someone else by mistake......or Skylar of the Sword is someone else. I ask you, Miss Skylar, just......who are you??"

Carlos tugged on Jude's shirt, but the 14 year-old stood his ground. Mornalee turned to face Jude. Her eyes were sympathetic. She sighed, and said,
"My dear child, I will explain everything later. For now, I must ask of you three to depart from the room. There are important matters i must discuss with Sir Branen and Lady Snow Stonewall."

The three children left the room quickly and quietly. Carlos and Issie fled to their rooms, while the determined Jude stayed by the door, peering his eye through the slight crack in the door.

"Now," Mornalee began to say, "It is a pleasure to meet you both. I am very interested in the reason why you both have been searching for me. Tell me, what is the purpose of your visit to the castle today?"

Ainra cursed viciously in Dafarzian after Sereya passed out. Ainra lifted Sereya in her arms. Thanks the gods for all her strength training. "By the gods, She'd heavy." She said carring the woman to the birthing bed. "We need a healer! Now!" Ainra ordered in complete future Queen mode. She propped up Sereya's legs and checked. "The child's breached!" She told her mother. "I'm going to have to pull it out." She told her and removed her royal bracelets. A nursemaid approached them with a bowl of boiling water. Ainra didn't have time to sterilze her hands any other way. She dipped her hands in the hot water. "Gah!" She cringed but fought through the pain.

Nanji was flirting with one of the woman at the party when his hands and arms heated up. He supressed a scream. By ta gods, Ai What are you doing? He thought to her. When they were separated, they could send one another their thoughts.

Not now, Nanji, Find the king. Sereya has been rendered unconscious by the pregnancy. I'm about to pull the child out. Ainra told him as she slid her hands in and felt the child's feet. She moved her hands up and under the child and pulled it out. She smiled. "It's a girl." She said as the child wailed. That was a good sign. She looked again and noticed there was more. A hint of a smile played on her face as the fae captain showered her with compliments. It was a familiar scene, but one she had not experienced in quite a while. Then for a moment everyone was quiet, she heard Mortimus’ voice in her head and the silence around her made her assume that the others were hearing it too. Tipst’s question revealed that her assumption was right.

“Indeed I was. Curious that he should request we not alert anyone. I suppose we should hear what he has to say before we leap to strange conclusions though.” She started off in the direction Mortimus had gone, but rather than flying straight to him she waited for everyone else to come along with her.

Alcide was not brooding, he mentally assured himself. He was not a man prone to such lethargic moods, and never would be. Alcide was merely in deep thought as he mulled over the latest conversation he’d had with his friend. Alcide liked to know as much about his enemy as possibly before facing them, and he knew too little for his liking about these Durahurne creatures. Greylord had been of some help to him on this matter, but he still was not satisfied with those answers.

“Your Emperor is either foolish or desperate to be meddling with such dark creatures.” Greylord had warned. Alcide did not altogether disagree with that assessment, but he was not so quick to discredit the power that the durahurne presented. Dangerous or not, it was impossible to deny the effect they had on the war front, which was why Alcide was wary. He’d seen these creatures in action.

“Can they be killed?” He had asked, while Greylord gave a knowing smile.

“All things can be killed my friend” Greylord had replied. “Your sword can cut through anything, even the spawn of hell itself. I have made it so.” Alcide had been a little relieved by that, but he still wished he knew his enemy better.

“So where is my princess eh? If I’m going to die fighting these beasts, I’d like a taste of my reward first.” Alcide had jokingly gripped good naturedly towards his friend. In all honesty he wasn’t in a rush to be married just yet, and especially not to any of Contalabutte’s few daughters. None were particularly comely, and were such spoilt squawking things that they reminded him more of the loud colorful birds nobles in the south kept as pets than a woman who could stir his manhood. He was starting to believe he’d trapped himself into a bad deal on that particular wish, so his friend’s response was surprising.

“Soon my friend, you will have your princess. This war brings her closer and closer to you every day.” Greylord had replied with a smirk he only wore when self-satisfied. The response confused him though, as Contalabutte had no other daughters as far as he knew, so how was there a Kalgrist princess out of his reach that would satisfy his wish?

He did not dwell though, as he soon arrived at the castle via carpet, and announced himself to the men, who knew him instantly. He was quickly led then to the Emperor and the carriage, and Alcide made a quick bow to show his fealty to the smaller man. “You summoned me your eminence?”

Branen felt dumbstruck by his luck in finding his exiled sovereigns so quickly, and rose to attention when his princess addressed him. “I was looking for a friend your highness.” Bran admitted freely. “One I had met long ago who told me she lived here. I was hoping she might keep my young sister Snow safe for me whilst I searched for Prince Dayerin and yourself. A battlefield is no safe place for children.” He explained.

“Your highness, I was gone and unable to aid your father when the Kalgrist hoards descended upon our home, but I will never abandon his children or my home. I am yours to command, whatever your orders.” Branen vowed solemnly.

“Excellent.” Puss remarked dryly.
