Jodie and Riley Lois didn't like the idea. Infact, they to a hatred upon the idea of having to go to school with other; divergent they are. But they had no choice, did they? "It is for your own good," their father had said after what felt like hours of silence in the car. The suspense was killing him, but his children dared not say a word as Riley kept himself occupied with the dial on the radio, whilst Jodie leaned her head against the car window, watching as the scenery zipped by, a tableau of dark green fir trees dotted with snow, wispy strands of white fog, and heavy gray storm clouds up above. It was so warm in the car that the windows kept fogging up, and she began to draw little squiggles in the condensation. Lennix sighed heavily,"Ah, I remember my first day of school of high school as if it was just yesterday."
They ignored him. He continued, "It was August 27, 1979 when your dearest Grandmother Josephine had woken me up for school. 'You'll have a great time, meet new friends' And you wanna know what happened?" Silence. "I did. It was also the day that I had met your mother. Beautiful, she was. Simply beautiful. She told me she never had met a man of wits in her entire life until.." he trailed off as if talking about his wife amongst her disappearance was binding enough. "I understand that you two are mad, hell if not infuriated with me, but look of the bright side. You'll meet some friends, and before you know it you guys will like it here." Simultaneously, Jodie and Lois rolled their eyes.

Finding the school wasn't difficult, though neither of the Lois' had been there before. The school was, like most other things, just off the highway. It was not obvious that it was a school; only the sign, which declared it to be the Messalonskee High School, made Lennix stop. To Riley, it looked like a collection of matching houses, built with maroon-colored bricks. There were so many trees and shrubs she couldn't see its size at first. Where was the feel of the institution? She wondered nostalgically. Where were the chain-link fences, the metal detectors? Lennix parked in front of the first building, which had a small sign over the door reading Front Office. No one else was parked there, so he was sure it was off limits.
The three waited for the other to make the next move. Finally, Lennix said, "Have a good day at school, and watch your sister Riley."
"I will." Riley muttered incoherently without looking up from his old, beaten-up converse.
It was barely audible, yet Lennix felt a sudden urge of relief. At that, Lennix bid his 'farewell' before Jodie and Riley both stepped unwillingly out of the toasty cab and walked down a little stone path lined with dark hedges. Riley took a deep breath before opening the door.
Inside, it was brightly lit, and warmer than they'd hoped. The office was small; a little waiting area with padded folding chairs, orange-flecked commercial carpet, notices and awards cluttering the walls, a big clock ticking loudly. Plants grew everywhere in large plastic pots, as if there wasn't enough greenery outside. The room was cut in half by a long counter, cluttered with wire baskets full of papers and brightly colored flyers taped to its front. There were three desks behind the counter, one of which was manned by a large, red-haired woman wearing glasses. She looked up. "Can I help you two?"
Riley spoke, "I'm Riley Lois and this is my sister Jodie Lois," he informed her; his accent barely recognizable, and saw the immediate awareness light from the women's eyes as if she'd been expecting the Lois'.
"Of course," she said. She dug through a precariously stacked pile of documents on her desk till she found the ones she was looking for. "I have your schedules right here, and a map of the school." She bought several sheets to the counter to show Jodie and Riley.
She went through the classes with them, highlighting the best route to each on the map, and gave each of them a slip to have each teacher sign, which they were to bring back at the end of the day. The lady smiled and hoped, like Lennix, that they would like it there at Messalonskee. They both smiled back as convincingly as they could.
Jodie looked at the map outside, trying to memorize it now; hopefully she wouldn't have to walk around with it stuck in front of her nose all day. Then, stuffed everything in her bag, slung the strap over her shoulder, and sucked in a huge breath.
I can do this, she lied feebly to herself. No one was going to bite her. She tugged her jacket closer to her body as she walked beside her older brother to the sidewalk, crowed with teenagers. "My class is just this way," Riley said pointing to the Science Building. "I'll see you later, alright?" Then, he planted a kiss on his sister's head before leaving her alone.
Once Jodie got around the cafeteria, building three was easy to spot. A large black '3' was painted on a white square on the east corner. Jodie felt her breathing gradually creeping toward hyperventilation as she approached the door. She tried holding her breath as she followed two unisex heavy coats through the door...
Bella walked into school, the crowds bustling around her. She let out a deep sigh. Her jean jacket coming to her waist and her purple shirt tucked into her jean short skirt over her orange ripped jeans, which finally tucked into her high-tops. She looked down as she walked, despite her colorful and stylish look, she didn't really stand out to most people, she hated coming to school, the worst part was she only had one class with her only friend Royce. She kicked at the ground softly as she walked, her feet tapping along to a song she played in her head as she walked and arrived at her first class.
Royce tapped into school, headphones in his ears as he walked through the halls, another school day closer to graduation. He waved to a couple of students that he liked and went into his classroom, there was a face he didn't recognize there. He pulled at the strings of his hooded sweatshirt and shuffled his sneakered feet under his ripped jeans. The new girl was cute.

Jodie took the slip up to the teacher, a tall, Asian woman whose desk had a nameplate identifying her as Mrs.Rita. She frowned at Jodie when she saw her name - not an encouraging response - and of course she flashed tomato red. "Miss Jodie Lois, am I correct?" Mrs.Rita said, pronouncing Jodie's name with a tad bit New Jersey accent. Jodie nodded quickly. Almost too quickly to the point where she seemed like a fish bobbing out of water.
Mrs. Rita didn't seem to notice. "Alrighty then," she signed the slip and handed back the note to Jodie. "You'll be seated in the fifth row in that empty desk on the right next across from Mr.Richards- ? Richards?"Jodie watched as the teacher snapped a ruler against her desk, startling every student around the room even the boy (Richards) who seemed to become droned in his music. He sat up with a jerk at the sound of the ruler, and obediently snatched the headphones from his ears.
"Thank you for joining us, Mr.Richards." Mrs.Rita said in a disparaging tone before sending Jodie to the empty desk without introducing her to the class. As she walked down the aisle her eyes suddenly met with the the boy that had been listening to music- though she regretted it- his eyes were not staring at her but through her. Those eyes, his eyes, dark brown and appeared to be lost in its own fantasy. His light brown hair was untidy, messy infact. He wasn't insanely gorgeous, but all in all he was worth looking at.
His face. His hair. Eyes. Lips. Everything. But that wasn't why Jodie couldn't stop herself from staring. She felt this weird connection toward him. As if she knew him. You know when you suddenly see someone and you have this eerie sensation telling you that you knew that person, but couldn't think of their name or where you had known them from? But you felt as if you were being drawn to them? That's how she felt with him. And she was sure he must've felt the same way otherwise his eyes would'nt have been fixed onto her so deeply. She looked away quickly, suddenly flushing before suddenly stumbling over a backpack in the walkway. She had to catch herself on the edge of a desk, and the girl sitting there and everyone who had caught the clumsy act snickered.
There was a strong impulse making way into Jodie's veins; however, she took a deep breath before setting her bag beside the desk and taking her seat. It was harder for her new classmates to stare at her during the lecture, but somehow, they managed. She kept her eyes down on the reading list the teacher had given her.
Afterwards, she tried to pay attention to the teacher, but somehow couldn't stop herself from peering off into space as the teacher droned on. She eyes followed each motivational poster lined along the wall, to the students obediently taking notes, and then she peeked over her shoulder at him until she realized he'd seen her before bringing her bringing her attention elsewhere.

"Welcome back students," the teacher beamed as sluggish groans had been exchanged. "I hope you all had a fantastic winter break. We have a new student who'll be joining us today." Everyone within a three-radius turned toward Riley who sat there staring blankly at everyone.
"Tell the students a little about yourself. C'mon up here." he waved, urging Riley from his seat. Eyes followed him as he managed to pull himself down the aisle and in front of the class. He surely didn't like the attention. The way everyone stared at him as if he were a brand new device waiting to be promoted to the world, the way they whispered about him as he stood their, bewildered.
What were they whispering about?
"Tell us a little bit about yourself," the teacher folded his arms arms across his chest; waiting. But what was their to tell?
"Um, hi. My name's Riley. Riley Lois, came here from Liverpool, England, and uh..I'm a junior here at Messalonskee high," then he quickly added, "with my sister Jodie. She's a junior here.."
More silence. "I guess I just want to say that I'm enjoying my time here," lie. "And I can't wait to meet some of you guys." More lies.
At that, he excused himself back to his seat.
Royce was staring at the girl, beautiful? She was. Out of his league? Totally. But she seemed to be the type to think about things too much and put herself down. As she walked down the isle and tripped over some guy's backpack her face flushed red with the snickering and she hurried to her seat, like she was trying to keep from doing something, maybe she was an easy crier? Royce continuously glanced at her as he took his notes from the boring teacher. She would occasionally look at him too. It felt kinda awkward, like he should say something. But of course, he couldn't in class. He glanced up to make sure the teacher wasn't looking then scribbled down a quick note and tossed it onto her desk. Welcome to Messalonskee. Where are you from?
Bella made it to her seat and then looked up as the teacher introduced a new student. From England? Cool, she'd always wanted to travel. She wondered what it must be like for him, being in a completely new country with all these different things to learn. Must be fascinating. But he looked... dissatisfied... no... distant, that was a good word, like he didn't want to get near anyone. She watched him on his way back to her seat and she looked at him for a moment longer before looking back at the board.
Throughout the class she would glance at the new kid, Riley, and wonder about him. He caught her looking at him at one point but she just gave him a soft smile and turned her head away quickly, again not wanting to draw attention to herself.

Curious, she looked over shoulder at him; Richards eyeing her in salutation. It didn't take Jodie long to realize that the note had been from him. She looked away quickly for she hadn't realized how long she had been staring, then scribbled briskly (liverpool.) before sending it back toward him. When she turned to see if he had gotten it, Mrs. Rita looked up from the board and eyed Richards suspiciously. Course, she paid little if not, no attention to Jodie. She was the newbie of the school and clearly wasn't yet to be picked on.
"Richards? What can possibly be more-" she was interrupted by the sound of the bell. "Have a good day everyone and Richards, I want you focusing next time." She told him as everyone began shoving their notes in their bags. Jodie copied them. And soon she was out of her seat. Fluidly, she rose, her satchel flung over her shoulder, and she was out the door before anyone else was out of their seat.

But why couldn't he look away? Something about her was memorizing, especially her eyes. He began scrutinizing her simple movements, how she'd let her hair fall over her left shoulder, making a curtain to block out attention from the other students, how she was fidgety and often had looked down to fiddle her small, slender finger across the evenly, trimmed ends of her hair.
Everything she did seemed to have been done cautiously with grace. That is until the bell had rang, making him jump. He quickly replaced his belongings in his sack and headed out the door without looking back.
Royce smiled when she looked back at him when she got the note. When she wrote back to him he smiled and hid the note in his pocket when the teacher turned toward them. He shrugged at the teacher's scolding and watched as the girl hurriedly made her way out of the room. He hurried after her, throwing his bag onto his shoulder as he hurried out of the room but when he got to the hallway, he couldn't find her. Damn, she was fast. He made his way to his second period class which he shared with Bella.
Bella could feel eyes on her back, like the boy was staring at her, why? Why would he be staring at her? So she'd been caught glancing at him, but wasn't everyone taking sneak peeks of the attractive new guy? What did she do? Had she upset him somehow?
She spent the majority of class worrying about what she could have done to make the new guy stare at her and when class ended she hurriedly packed her bag and walked out of the room without looking up, eager to get to her next class with Royce.
When Bella made it into the next class, Royce was already seated and she sat down next to him silently. "So how was your winter break?" He asked.
Bella rolled her eyes at him. "You should know, we messaged practically every day." She chuckled softly as she brought out her pencil.
