Description

Basics
Name: Yen Daniel Dangtran
Gender: male
Age: 265
Race: ghoul
Ethnicity: Vietnamese-American
Eye Color: brown
Hair Color: n/a (used to be black)
Sexuality: straight

Physical Descriptions:
Weight: 120 lbs
Height: 4'11"
Body Type: smaller than normal, stronger than normal
Hair Style: N/A
Appearance: Yen is a short man who would be of average build if his height were anything like average. However, though his body is very proportional, he is very short. He, of course, looks like what he is - a ghoul, and so his skin is almost non-existent. You can't quite tell what he used to look like, but a quick examination of his face makes it clear that he is Asian of some sort. His brown eyes are unusually bright, and are his most prominent characteristic.
Scars: his left ear is missing
Clothing: Yen wears some very beat-up cargo pants that might have once been army green, a brown T-shirt with a reinforced leather jerkin sort of thing pulled over it, which looks like he made it out of spare parts, brass knuckles, a roving trader's hat with a black bandanna under it, fingerless gloves, really beat-up sneakers, and a belt on which he keeps his sheath knife, his 10 mm pistol, and his ammo (though he keeps some ammo on a bandolier).

Personality:
Yen is a mild kid with a strong sense of justice. However, he does have a very tough skin, and doesn't give a damn what you say. He does care what you think, however, in the way that he wants everyone to be happy. He wants to be excellent, and is very disappointed with himself and beats himself up if he fails at anything. Though he is from before the bombs dropped, he is still very youthful in his demeanor, but not naive. He tries to be optimistic, but has trouble with this since the world went to shit and so did his life. He can be very sarcastic if you catch him in a bad mood. He hates it when people mistreat women.

Weapons
10mm pistol and 36 rounds, sheath knife, sawed-off shotgun and 30 shells, brass knuckles, two balanced throwing knives, and a frag grenade.

History:
Pre-War
Yen was born in Pre-War America 18 years before the bombs dropped. He was in a good family and went to a private school. He was usually a good kid, but took great pleasure in hacking the school computers and messing with e-mails (making teachers look like they were cursing a blue streak at other teachers, etc.). He was also brilliant, and excelled in school. However, when the threat of nuclear holocaust loomed, his parents tried desperately to get into a Vault. They were told that there wasn't enough room for them. So they stayed in their house and waited for death bitterly. Then the bombs dropped.

Post-Apocalyptia
Yen was the only member of his family that survived. Unfortunately, he was horribly changed by the radiation and became a ghoul. He stayed in his ruined house for a year, but finally accepted what had happened to the world and moved on. He roamed the Wastes for years as just a random explorer. Then, in what he calls 27 P.A. (Post Apocalypse), he found the Raiders. He wreaked havoc with them, being their repair-man, slicer and hacker for 156 years. Whenever one tribe died out, he joined the next one with his new-earned prestige from the previous one. This is where he got his armor and weapons. This went on until he betrayed one tribe, hoarding some loot for himself. They threw him in the basement of some building in their base town and tortured him for fun for months. This is where he lost his left ear. Then he escaped and made his way to INSERT CITY HERE, where they patched him up and he eventually set up shop as a repair-man/hacker. Every now and then, he would feel like going out and adventuring, but then no one would go with him, and he didn't particularly feel like going by himself. He heard stories of famous adventurers, and always dreamed of getting back out there.

Extra information:
He can juggle and play the violin. He speaks Latin, German, Vietnamese, and English.

So begins...

'Hurry up, zombie, I gotta go get drunk.'

Yen looked up from the gun he was tinkering with in amusement. A tough looking fellow in merc armor was standing impatiently in front of him. This man had set a Mr. Gutsy down on the table and was implying not so subtly that he wanted Yen to fix it. He observed the hapless robot with a critical eye and then looked back at the man.

'You hearin' me, zombie, or did the radiation destroy your fuckin' hearing, too?' He leaned over the table to get closer to Yen. 'Well I'll say it clearer. HURRY. THE FUCK. UP.'

Yen casually reached down, grabbed his pistol off the floor, and pointed it in the man's face, which he had so nicely put so near to him. "Please back up. I'm working." The man slowly leaned back. Yen put the pistol back on the floor, and continued talking. "This rifle is for another client. He hired me yesterday, and said it was of the utmost importance. Therefore I will get to you in a minute. I am almost finished, as you can see." A piece on the gun clicked into place. And another. "Done. Now I will go outside to test it. If you'll excuse me." He stood up to leave, only to find the merc's gun in his face.

'I can play this game too, zombie. Put the rifle down and fix this damn hunk of metal, or I will put my own hunk of metal right through your motherfuckin' brain.'

Yen set the rifle down, still coolly, and sat down. Then he looked at the robot. "There's nothing wrong with it."

'What?'

"There is nothing wrong with your robot." Yen repeated. "It is simply out of batteries."

The merc stood there angrily. 'Then what the hell did I come here for?!?'

"Nothing, apparently. Get out of this shop, and find a new battery. At least I'm not going to make you pay me."

The merc left grugdingly. Yen sat back and sighed. There were at least two clients like that per day. Well, he was gone now. Yen picked up the rifle and walked outside to finish it.

Yen closed up his shop with a sigh. Hopefully this was the last time. The last time he would offer to be a group's hacker. He had made dozens of offers to dozens of groups, but none of them would accept him for different reasons: he was a zombie, he was too old, they didn't believe that he was as good as he said he was, they were full up, they needed someone with caps, etc. He was an expert in computers and repair, but you wouldn't know it by looking at him. He looked decrepit, like an old shack by the side of the road. He was so beaten up he didn't even recognize himself anymore. He certainly didn't look like an adventurer. But he knew he was one.

He turned the sign on the door to "closed" and paused for a moment, wishing himself luck. He didn't have much of it. Then he turned away, walking toward Silver Venom.

When he opened the door to the inn, the smell of whiskey and beer breezed by him pleasantly. He inhaled deeply and looked around. Seeing Emma looking at him, he smiled. This only made him look more gruesome, but he did it anyway. He liked Emma. Everybody did. She was talking to another ghoul whom Yen did not recognize. Intrigued, Yen walked over. "Hey, Em." he rasped. "How're you doing?"

More people made their way into her bar, several were just regular customers, but three found their way to her table. There was Yen, a fellow ghoul, but she knew she'd never really understand what he went through, no one treated her like they treated him. She still had her pretty face, never aging. Most people didn't even know she was a ghoul herself until she told them. The only give away was her left hand, and she usually didn't flaunt that around. his eyes were old, and wise, and to probably no one but Emma, they looked kind. She smiled at him as he sat down, he was somewhat of an old friend of hers. His shop down the way had a way of drawing in a lot of her regular customers, and vice versus, his random customers had a way of making it to her bar. His customers included her bartender, but she knew outside of her bar (and especially in Yen's shop) he was rude to any ghoul. He even had a hard time working under Em.

Em grabbed her glass of whiskey and finished off the almost full cup and looked back at him,

"I'm alright, hoping to have a few more applicants for the Reix, but can't complain too much, the bars getting good business."

The bar got louder as she said this, as though in agreement to her statement.

"I did have a favor to ask of you, I was going to make my way to your shop tomorrow, but since you're here anyway...My old pistols been on the fritz, and I could normally fix it myself, but this tick is just something I can't seem to figure out."

Em's charm and charisma oozed of out her. It happened anytime that she talked, without her meaning to. That and her pretty face was the reason so many people liked her, and would do almost anything she asked of them. It was nice, but she got somewhat bored with it, not much of a challenge.

The lights in the bar started to flicker, but then steadied. The place was nice, but it was still pretty old technology. Em's eyes were very sensitive to light, and she was probably the only one that noticed the fluctuation in how bright it was. She let out a small sigh of worry, she hadn't told anyone, but she was starting to lose her vision and hadn't been able to scavenge any glasses that helped.

Just as she started to think about her problem, two more made their way over to where she sat. Alex and Niklas. At Alex's question she looked at Trent,

"You want to tell him where to go?"

Alex wasn't really someone Em knew anything about. So she left Trent to give him any information that he needed. As for Niklas, she nodded her head towards him in acknowledgment to his greeting, but looked away. She knew him a little better than Alex, but didn't know how to feel about him or his mask, she'd never seen him without it, and she never trusted anyone that she couldn't really make eye contact with. After the exchanges, Em turned her attention back to Yen, awaiting his answer.

Yen nodded, then strained to hear her proposition. Well, not exactly a proposition, more of a request. Em was too good a friend for him to make her pay him for the occasional favor. "Of course. Do you have it with you? I could take a quick look at it now if you want." But then someone tapped him on the back. Yen flinched slightly. He wasn't used to being touched. Turning around, he saw Niklas standing behind him. Yen frowned inwardly. He didn't really like Niklas. There was something... odd about him that Yen couldn't quite place. But outside he gave a tight smile. "Hello, Niklas. It's going well, I suppose. How is sitting around being bored going?"

Yen's eyes narrowed when Niklas's accent dropped completely away. "Yes, I'm going to try to join. Again." he said with a chagrined look.

'So, you were always unnerved about seeing mein face, correct?' The accent was back. Odd.

Yen replied with a sarcastic smile, "I've found that people are usually more unnerved about mine."

Yen stared at Niklas, then rested his gaze when Niklas' attention was directed toward a newcomer. He rolled his eyes as Niklas showed off his sword and knowledge of them and how to make them, etc. To be quite honest, Yen wasn't exactly sure why he didn't like Niklas. Maybe it was the mask, maybe it was the over-confidence, maybe it was just his personality. But there was something else... Something off.

Another man came over, bringing Yen out of his thoughts, and asked with an odd accent if this was the Reix meeting. This place was just full of odd accents today. "Yes." Yen answered, smiling and standing up. "I'm Yen. Pleased to meet you." He extended his hand for the man to shake.

Sean shook Yen's hand firmly, returning a friendly smile.
"Likewise, Yen, my name's Sean, or so I'm told." He said with a light chuckle, there was a strange charm about his own accent, only a twang of a slavic slur, take that away and he could pass as an American.

"Er, I hate to sound dumb, but I'm not very informed about this new group. What exactly is the Reix setting out to acheive?" He asked as he pulled up a chair.

"I mean, with time, of course."

Yen smiled more easily now, liking this strange man more and more. "I'm not sure exactly. Something about taking back Charleston from Black." Then he chuckled, "Truth is, I don't really care what they're doing as long as I get to do it with them. Sixty-four years of repairing is just beginning to get boring." He laughed. It was something he did a lot. He knew that most ghouls were ornery, sarcastic fellows, and he got pretty tired of them pretty quick. So he chose to be a chummy, sarcastic fellow and be happy with that. It was good enough, he thought.

He looked over at the crowd and decided that they looked like they weren't going to start yet. So he started something he truly enjoyed - conversation. "So, where did you come from, Sean? I haven't ever seen you around."

Sean squinted, thinking for a second.
"I've been traveling on the old highways for...a few months, it must have been now. I was heading along route 64 from Indiana when I heard about this meet up." He explained, leaning in towards Yen slightly.

"However, as far as roots go, I was born a traveler I suppose. You see I was of this entire wandering tribe, and they all spoke like I do, but stronger and in another language. One day, we were moving along this massive sand dune, when a storm picked up. I swear, it was so thick my eyes were red for days afterwards." He told his story with great enthusiasm, knowing all the right times to pause and where to put emphasis on his words.

"I ended up getting lost in this storm, and found myself in the hands of these friendly, capable people called The Followers of The Apocalypse. They taught me English, basically made me the man I am today. I owe them a lot, that much can be said." He said.

"How about you, Yen? I bet in your age, you've seen a Hell of a lot more than me." Sean asked this time, more interested in hearing Yen's story than retelling his own.

Yen smiled and launched into the story telling with gusto. "Well, for sixty-four years I've been here repairing, like I said. But I've been around longer than that. In fact, it was..." he stopped and thought. And thought. "Around 240? Yeah. Around 240 years ago that I started my adventuring career." He laughed. "You know, 240 years ago I would have said that no one could live to be over 120. And now here I am. Living proof that that ain't so. Does that seem right to you? Anyway, there I was, thinking that I was the only living soul left in the world. Until I found the, uh..." He paused for a moment. "Tribesmen." He figured that this man wouldn't take too kindly to a person who had helped the Raiders. "I helped them as an expert hacker and repair man for a good 156 years." He laughed again. "I guess it was pretty funny when I figured out I wasn't going to die of old age. I just kept thinkin', 'anytime now,' but nope. I just kept on living like nothing in the 'verse could stop me. At first I was pretty freaked out, but then I got accustomed to the thought." If this were an awards ceremony, Yen would probably be given the 'Best-Sport-in-the-Galaxy Award,' but he didn't seem to know it. He just lived, and was happy with that, no matter how long it took for him to finally die. "But then..." His eyes grew pained and the smile disappeared from his face. "I, uh... betrayed one tribe. I chose to skim some of the loot. They didn't take too kindly to that. They, uh... Well anyway, that's how I lost my ear." The grin returned. "I know exactly what you're thinking. 'Which ear, Yen? Aren't they both missing?' Yeah, the other one fell off." He guffawed. "You know, before the war, I never thought I'd be able to say that. 'My ear fell off.' Ha! Oh, that's too good." After a moment of calming down, he continued. "I escaped from them one day and made my way here. I gotta say I was surprised. I didn't think settlements existed anymore. But they patched me up and so I set up shop. Ever since, I've been wanting to get back out there, you know?"

Yen then realized that he'd been yapping for quite a long time and quieted down. "So, you're thinking of joining up too?"

Sean listened carefully, he was always fascinated by the stories that ghouls had to tell. A combined age and wisdom always made for great listen.

He scratched the side of his face, then realized how grizzly his facial hair was getting, months without a shave was certainly making a difference to his appearance.

"I guess I can't say you're grinning from ear to ear then..." He muttered jokingly.

"Well you have a very interesting story friend. And yes, I am hoping to join as well." He gave a nod, then glanced over to the man removing his mask, giving Yen a seemingly heartfelt apology about something.

Yen nodded in thanks at Sean, then looked up in surprise at Niklas. This was a turn of events that he had definitely not forseen. For once the talkative ghoul was completely speechless. Now he understood why the proud swordsman kept up his disguise, and why he was so overconfident. It was all an act. Well, some of it. He was glad to know about the accent: that had been bothering him. And though Yen usually didn't drink, he would gladly take a few rounds on this apologetic fellow.

'Now, i apologise for intruding. Still dislike me?'

Yen blinked in surprise. Then he opened his mouth to speak, but didn't really know what to say. He wasn't used to being apologized to. So he just shook his head and shook Niklas' hand. "Thanks." he managed to croak. Then he recovered his composure and stuttered a little. "Um, uhhhm yes, fantastic. Uhhhm thank-you. I'm sorry for um, being so hostile. Um, yes. Fantastic." Completely recovered now, he stood up and grinned, shaking Niklas' hand more strongly. "I had no idea I was speaking to the Swordsman of the Apocalypse. And yes, I love the reference."

"Ah." Niklas muttered, directed towards the male. "The name is Niklas Amsler, but you can call me Niklas." He laughed, drinking some Whiskey.

"And you, friend?" He smiled towards him. Something is different about this one. I hope we can maintain a friendship. He thought to himself, a grin forming on his face. "I'll be back in a minute, hold on."

He returned around three minutes later, in a new getup. He had a white shirt, missing one sleeve, and a leather vest over it. With black trousers and boots. The missing sleeve showed his Metal arm, which thankfully Yen had made. Probably out of spite. He also had his long, blonde hair tied back, with a perfect fringe.

"Yen, did i ever thank you for making me this replacement? It's so much more useful. Remember, explosives aren't a joke. Although, i learnt that the hard way."

Yen lifted his glass in salute then took a swig. It had been a while since he had drunk and the whiskey burned his throat, making him cough. When he recovered, laughing at himself, he saw that Niklas had gone and returned with a less ridiculous outfit. "Yes, I believe you did give me some snarky but grateful response." He smiled, his eyes still wet with tears from coughing. "You never did tell me the story, though. Of how it happened, that is."

"Ah, well." Yen said to Niklas, smiling. "Another day, perhaps. A day when we're out on the road with the Reix!" He lifted his glass once more, downed the rest of the whiskey, coughed, and then set the glass on the bar. Scooping up Em's pistol, he put it in his backpack - the same old backpack he had had with him since high-school. "Wish me luck." He said with a nervous smile, then took out his application and walked to the door of the VIP room. Handing it to the guard, he waited for him to read it. And waited. And waited. And waited. He cleared his throat uncomfortably. "Uh, look, can you actually read that thing?" The super-mutant looked up at him and nodded, obviously lying. Yen didn't catch it, though. "Okay." he said. And waited some more. "Um. Yeah. I don't think you can, 'cause I didn't write that much. So could ya just let me in now?" Yen started to walk forward, and the super-mutant pushed him back.

'You no go in 'til I say.'

Yen put up his hands. "Okay, I don't want a fight."

'Then go home.'

Yen looked chagrined, then angry. "Nevermind, I do want a fight. Lemme in, you scumbag!" He pulled out his pistol, trying to look tough.

The super-mutant smirked, then pushed open the door. 'You go in now.'

Yen spluttered for a moment, then put his pistol away, smoothed out his shirt and walked in as coolly as he could.
