The sun sat high up in the sky, looking down upon the city of Akida, Japan from its place among the clouds. Scurrying below like small ants in comparison to the grandeur of the illumination above were the students of Akida Academy, most of who had just been dismissed from class and were eagerly heading to lunch. Most there were mages, any other beings familiars, most of which staying at the side of those they identified as their partners. Though not everyone was accompanied by a familiar, some walking surrounded by their mage friends and others instead walking alone. And our prime example for the latter would have to be Yoriyuki Yoshida, hovering solo at the back of a crowd of students, his hands stuck deep into his pockets and a displeased frown painted upon his face, one that didn't look like it would waver in any time soon.

It was no secret that the young mage had struggled with using his magic. The familiars he had managed to summon were rather weak and unhelpful, remaining in a somewhat stable state for merely minutes before fading away to who-knows-where. Though, he wasn't the type to demand sympathy, quite the opposite actually. He'd never been one that was open to criticism or helpful hints, most deeming him rendered hopeless due to nothing other than his own stubbornness.

While most students flocked to the lunchroom, Yoriyuki had other ideas. He wasn't particularly hungry, and he didn't enjoy the crowded atmosphere of the cafeteria anyway. As their last class had been outdoors, Yoriyuki thought it perfectly acceptable to stay out doors while most went inside, knowing the perfect place for a possible afternoon nap. Near the front of the academy sat a bunch of wooden picnic tables, ones that had become the home to a quiet crowd, as it was a very good place to study. And, upon arriving to his desired destination, Yoriyuki found that many of the people there were regulars, like the one boy who wore comically large glasses and made weird choking noises as he reviewed his homework, or the couple who seemed to be content with skipping lunch to instead devour one another’s faces. Though there were a few new folk, such as a kid who could have only been- twelve maybe?- playing with his familiar who seemed to take the form of a dog. Or, maybe the two very muscular females, accompanied by their familiars, threatening to give a terrified looking kid carrying a whole lot of text books a wedgie. Yoriyuki probably should have said something. He didn't say something.

Instead, he plopped himself down upon an empty table, hoping to take a nap or something, though the sun's brightness was obviously going to get in the way of his attempts at slumber, not to mention how uncomfortable the bench he was seated upon was. Realizing that a nap was not going to work out, Yoriyuki straightened himself up, the young boy catching his eye once again. The kid was laughing rather loudly now, rolling around upon the vividly green grass and obviously enjoying the company of his familiar. Yoriyuki shouldn't have thought anything of it, as this wasn't the first time he'd seen such a display. However, he couldn't help but wonder how it was that the boy had managed to summon a familiar at such a young age. He was, in all honesty, jealous, though he quickly tried to swallow the feeling and turn his gaze to something out. He'd even prefer to watch the make out session going on over to his left than continue staring at the child, though he found himself stuck on the kid and his familiar.

But it just wasn't fair. Why was he so bad at magic and summoning? What was he doing wrong? His hand balling into a fist and eyes slamming closed, he decided that he'd try. It was a pointless thing to do in the middle of school, as he didn't truly need a familiar in that moment, the action's only purpose being so that he feel a little better about his own skill. He cursed himself for giving in like that, though that didn't stop him from pouring his concentration into the act of bringing a familiar to his side. He imagined, just for a second, that he did have the power to order a familiar around, and that he was going to command it to come to his side, just so that he could have a little bit of bragging rights. But, the internal thought of what the heck am I doing washed over him and he slumped forward in his chair, pressing his face against the table's wooden surface. Why was he wasting his time trying to do silly magic tricks? He'd just.... but before he could offer himself any sort of mental support, he noticed that the surrounding crowd had gone rather silent. Had the couple eaten one another in the brief time that he'd been consumed in thought? He would have guessed so, as it seemed that even the birds had stopped chirping, watching something he was rather oblivious to in complete awe. He sat up, ready to see what on earth was going on when he too noticed it, something... someone just to the right of him. Who... who was that?

Silence. Tegan could hear nothing. Blinding. Even though her eyes were closed she knew she was surrounded only by light of ever changing colors. She wasn't sure where she was going, nor was she sure where she had even come from anymore. Her ability to consider these ideas began to slowly fade however as she drifted further and further away from consciousness and into the comforting nothingness that came with sleep.

Just to Yoriyuki's right appeared a single mote of green light. He of course didn't notice at the time as he was too busy burying his face in the table. Slowly this solitary point of light grew, spawning several more motes which in turn grew and spawned even more motes of their own. Those who had been standing around simply minding their own business began to take notice of the odd phenomenon and had grown silent. The motes of light began to coalesce together at the table and had this point taken on a shape that almost resembled a person. As the lights finally seemed to be done expanding and multiplying, a gentle but unnatural breeze rolled over the area and as the wind blew across the mass of lights it carried them along with it, much like the white white puffs of a dandelion. Left in its place was... A girl?

Seemingly sound asleep and leaned over on to the table much in the same manner as Yori was himself just a moment ago was a girl with shockingly red hair and very odd clothing. She looked rather peaceful and serene as she slept with a silly looking smile on her face, but as the onlookers stood by and stared in silence the girl began to stir. With a yawn she raised her arms up into the air in a stretching manner before rubbing and blinking open her tired looking eyes. The smile she was wearing as she slept remained as the green orbs of her eyes looked to Yoriyuki, "G'morning." Who this girl was was quite a mystery, but one thing Yoriyuki was certain of was the connection he felt with the being that sat across from him. The flow of mana he felt would make it quite clear, this girl was certainly his familiar.

"My name's Tegan, who're you?" Her voice was a bit high pitched but clear as crystal and her eyes were full of life and curiosity as she tilted her head quizzically at the young man who sat just a short distance across from her. The small crowd of onlookers began to mumble among themselves about what they had seen but none seemed keen on approaching either of them as Tegan leaned forward and pulled her feet up to cross her legs, awaiting her answer.

Of all the horrible things that could have been at his side, things bad enough to silence a crowd, Yoriyuki was rather surprised to find that it was, and was only, a small girl slouched over the table in a deep slumber. Her presence had certainly startled Yoriyuki, to say the least, the boy scooting a good measure away from her, nearly falling off of the bench they sat upon in doing so. Her appearance was quite eye-grabbing, her hair a brighter shade of red than he’d ever seen and her sleeping face lit up equally so. Though, the girl as a whole was rather eye-grabbing, considering she had appeared out of thin air, which was not much of a natural thing for one to do.

However, Yoriyuki’s thoughts didn’t linger on her, as he became concerned with his own wellbeing. Inwardly, he felt some sort of draw to the stranger. Did he… did he know her? No, he didn’t think so. Yet it felt as if there was some already established bond between the two of them. That, and the feeling of being shocked by something, his eyes flickering downwards to his arms, which were hovering above the table’s wooden surface. It took him a moment to realize that he was using magic, or electricity to be exact, though he wasn’t summoning volts, more like a bit of static that caused his hair to stand on edge. Quickly, he attempted to do away with this, as it certainly wasn’t helping the already rather confusing and stressful situation.

For Yoriyuki knew what the girl before him was, even if he continually, mentally denied it. He’d seen familiars of all sorts, but never ever had he seen a human. He was positive that no one had; that summoning a human-familiar hadn’t been done before. So, logically speaking, this girl was not his familiar. She couldn’t be. But, if that was the case, what was she?

Obviously, the answer was on its way, as the stranger awoke, her wide eyes meeting Yoriyuki’s as she sat up and sleepily greeted him good morning. “My name's Tegan,” she said,“Who're you?" With this, the crowd broke into fits of whispers, Yoriyuki having to swallow the rising urge to tell them all to shut up.

He was hesitant to answer the rather strange stranger, Tegan, fiddling with his thumbs rather anxiously as he eyed the surrounding group of people, an audience that seemed to be growing larger and larger. It was only a matter of time before a teacher would be called and the matter would be sorted out, right? Turning his attention back to the girl before him, now sitting cross legged upon the bench, the mage introduced himself. “I’m Yoriyuki,” he muttered, though he didn’t stay on the subject of his name for long. “How… did you get here?”

------

Seemingly totally oblivious to any of the onlookers Tegan grinned and tilted her head after hearing the boy's name. "Yoriyuki huh? That's a funny one! Can't say I've heard of a name like that before." His next question promtped the red-head to utter a "Hm..." as she scrunched up her face and looked up at the sky, apparently quite deep in thought. "Dunno!" Was the the profound answer she had come up with as she looked back down at Yoruyuki and shrugged. "I think you'd have a better idea than me, I just kinda woke up here really." She rubbed the back of her neck and grinned, looking slightly apologetic or embarrassed at her lack of knowledge about the current situation.

It was now that she finally took a glance around at her surroundings and noticed the whispering crowd that was watching them. Tegan only smiled as she gave a few waves to the people, only some of whom gave uncertain waves in return. "But ya know, where I came from doesn't matter so much does it? What -is- important is that I'm here now and that I get the feeling you need me Mr. Yuriyaki." Rather suddenly Tegan scooted forward to close the distance between herself and the boy as she thrust her hand forward towards him, apparently offering a handshake. "It's nice to meet you, I hope we can be good friends." Her smile was bright and genuine as her green eyes gazed directly into Yoriyuki's.

It was at about this time that a gap began to form in the crowd, making way for a rather plain and boring looking man that was undoubtedly a teacher of some description who was attracted by the strange formation of a crowd. As he adjusted his glasses he raised a brow and gave the pair at the table a critial look, "What exactly is going on here?" He tried to sound firm and authorative but his rather weak figure and disposition gave him quite the opposite effect as he stood by and tried to look impatient.

------

Yoriyuki was not exactly paying attention to Tegan and whatever she may have been doing, his focus slipping away as soon as she admitted the eerie fact of not knowing how it was that she got there. Out of the corner of his eye, he watched the surrounding crowd, most of whom were obviously flustered. How had a crowd of such magnitude even gathered there, in that small patio area in front of the academy? Was it not lunch time? Yoriyuki, feeling that their presence was only making matters worse, opened his mouth to yell at them, though he was interrupted by Tegan, whose interest in the conversation had once again been peeked.

He needed her? If she did, somehow, turn out to be his familiar, that would make sense, he supposed. She may have been aware of the fact that he had summoned her, something most mages would have done had it been useful, not just because of boredom and jealousy. He also felt compelled to correct her, as she had done well to slaughter the pronunciation of his name. However, he was silenced by her next act, Tegan taking it upon herself to inch closer to him and offering her hand up for a friendly shake. Had she never heard of personal space? Yoriyuki pulled a rather visibly uncomfortable face, sliding off of the bench and instead standing up, taking Tegan’s hand and gently shaking it before dropping it as if she had some sort of disease. However, she didn’t seem deterred, continuing on about how she wished them to be good friends. She’d certainly found the wrong person for that.

Before the mage had to think of a reply, a bespectacled and rather small man instead spoke, shoving his way through the crowd and making his way to them. The man, a teacher, planted himself before the two of them, quickly demanding that they explain the situation. Yoriyuki didn’t really know how, as he didn’t truly understand it himself. Awkwardly, he stared at the man for a moment, who glared right back, pushing his glasses up his nose with his index finger as he waited. “I’m… not really sure,” said Yoriyuki, shoving his hands into his pockets, though he maintained eye contact with the teacher. He decided to speak again, though he kept his words quiet enough so that everyone wouldn’t be able to hear them. “I was trying to practice summoning and she appeared by my side. But, familiars aren’t… I mean, are they?”

The teacher certainly looked uncomfortable and maybe a bit shocked as well, sizing Tegan up like she was something to be feared. Even Yoriyuki, who was rather uncomfortable with her company so far, was already capable of telling that she wasn’t the type of girl who could inflict harm to something as small and insignificant as a bug. However, the teacher seemed rather put off by this, his widened eyes, magnified by the lenses that covered them, paired with his slim and short body causing him to seem rather bug-eyed. Yoriyuki might have laughed had it been in any other context. He wasn’t going to get in trouble for this situation, was he? Surely it had to have been a misunderstanding.
