A morally grey tale of mercenaries in a failed African state...

1,105 readers have visited FarCry 2 since shmband created it.

Introduction

The story takes place in a small, failed West African state, currently embroiled in a civil war. The government has recently collapsed, leaving two factions vying for control. At war are the United Front for Liberation and Labour (UFLL, led by Addi Mbantuwe, a former opposition leader) and the Alliance for Popular Resistance (APR, best far led by Maj. Oliver Tambossa, Chief of Staff for the former government).

Both factions have claimed to have the people's interests at heart, but both have shown ruthlessness, warmongering, greed, and a general disregard for the well-being of the people. Both sides have hired many foreign mercenaries to bolster their strength over the course of the conflict. The recent exhaustion of the nation's diamond mines has thrown the nation into further turmoil, leaving many foreign mercenaries without payment and no way out.

The players in this RP are individual expat freelance mercenaries, who have been in the country for some time working jobs for the factions independantly. They have no ties to either faction or any private military company, and are just looking to make money. The exception (played by me) is a new arrival who's been sent as a deniable agent to find and assassinate an arms dealer known as the Jackal, who has been selling weapons to both sides of the conflict. However, a new situation changes everyones fortunes, and the mercenaries all realise they will have to work together to get out of the country alive.

Aiden watched them run out of the warehouse and she grinned when they jumped in to the car. She laughed at Toby’s small joke and looked at it for a second, grinning. "You got my perfect size, we should do this more often," She turned her head back to wink at him and grinned at the two of them.

She put the car back in drive and swerved around, looking at the cars in the distance. If it were up to her she would have driven through them just to piss them off; it would have been fun. But she wouldn't, she had two other people in the car and they looked like they were panicking just a little. Aiden just laughed a little and pressed down on the gas, turning the wheel to the right.

"Hey, met some guy in the bar. Offered to tell me about the Jackal, his name was Aaron. He could be of use when all of this is over, 'kay?" She asked absentmindedly as she pressed the gas down to go faster. She smiled at the smoothness the car seemed to take it, the only major bumps was where she went over a pothole.

"And just throwing it out there, why do we have mercenaries chasing us? Not that I'm objecting or anything, it's pretty fun. I'm just curious is all," She said with a smirk and she took one hand of the wheel to take the safety off of the star .45 pistol.

She laughed as she swerved the car to a quick left in the timber yard, trying to get the white cars off of her ass, frowning as she didn't seem to lose them. "Maybe now would be a good time to shoot at their tires," She suggested.

Toby jarred his head up at Aiden when she mentioned about meeting someone who knew something about the Jackal. For a moment he wondered if the men who were advancing were actually after him...or at least whether this 'Aaron' would be safe when the approaching squad made it to the bar. This had the potential to turn very bad...but turning around to go back was not an option.

"Really?" he said. But there wasn't time to ask anything else, a white truck was on their tail. They must have been pretty quick off the mark to have followed them off road. The foliage gave way to another dirt track which seemed to circle around a punch-bowl in the landscape which had been completely stripped of trees and shrubs, and turned into an extensive lumberyard. There were plenty of abandoned buildings around, but it didn't look like they were being used as safehouses by the factions. Probably too exposed, Toby figured.

He looked back. The pursuing van was a heavy looking vehicle, and he wasn't sure taking the tires out would be so easy. Haeger was the only one who had a suitable weapon to try.

Then, he spotted something that gave him an idea.

"Johnny," he said, "put some fire on 'em, try and get a shot at the tires if you can, but mainly try to force them to keep their head down. Aiden, take the next right...make it a sharp turn and do a loop of the yard. Try to make 'em chase you back around to this point."

Without waiting for a response, he put his hand on the door handle, and when the car turned - the back wheels skidding around in a circle - he opened in and launched himself out of the car into the bushes. He stayed prone until the white van roared past, still chasing the jeep with Aiden and Johnny.

He heard the two cars move away around the circumference of the yard, and the sound of rifle fire. Once he was happy they were far enough ahead, and ran across the track and scrambled up an embankment, to where a piled of huge logs was set ready for trimming. He picked up a long-handled axe and wedged it halfway into the pile of logs, then watched the road for the two vehicles coming back around.

This was going to take good timing....and a whole bunch of luck....

"Understood." Johnny said, almost mechanically, as he moved to the back of the jeep and positioned himself in a somewhat stable, lying-down position in the moving jeep. It was difficult to get a good aim at the enemy when both vehicles moved fast and in rapid turns. It took just as much energy for the Swedish mercenary to just stay in the jeep and not fall off. He heard more than saw how Toby jumped out of the moving car, leaving him alone with Aiden. He chambered a round in the G3, and without further ado, opened fire on the other car. Unlike his instructions from Toby, he didn't aim for the tires. On the contrary, he aimed for the windshield of the vehicle instead. Hitting the tires was nigh impossible with his level of marksmanship, while the jeep was moving. Hitting the windshield, difficult, but possible.

More to the point, the bullets of the G3, were large and powerful, and would smash right through the plexiglass of the windshield. The driver and the person next to him would be forced to duck or get killed for sure. That was, of course, if he could just hit the van despite the snaking moves of both vehicles. He gritted his teeth as he missed with his first five rounds. He turned his head slightly, and called out to Aiden:

"Try and give me a few meters of straight driving. I can't aim when we're driving around like this."

Finally on a piece of straight road, he got his chance. Johnny took aim, and fired six or seven rounds in rapid succession. He watched the windshield of the van smash to pieces, and saw the two men behind it cower under the hailstorm of bullets. Even when the road began to twist and turn again, Johnny kept firing at them; if nothing else, the sound would do something to keep them busy and with their heads down. After a few moments, he pulled out the empty 20 round clip, tossing it aside and slapping another one into the weapon, chambering a new round, and returning the rifle to aiming position. But he held his fire, figuring they were closing in on where Toby had dropped them off, once more.

"If necessary, slow down and pick him up again. I'll hold my fire and be ready to cover you if need be." He told Aiden without taking his eyes away from the iron sights of the G3.

Aiden listened to Toby faintly, her eyes darting from the mirror to the road in front of her. She nodded at his instructions, not quite paying attention to him. The road was bumping with loose dirt and she feared being pulled into the sides and then flipping, not that she would voice the concern. She felt the corner of her lips twitch up a bit as she watched both Johnny crawl from the front seat to the back and Toby jump out of the car from her peripherals. Perhaps the two men that she had just met were crazy after all, a thought that Aiden liked. She laughed softly under her breath and swerved the car harshly, following Toby's instructions to drive in the circle.

She jumped a fraction when she heard the sound of a gun being fired but relaxed as she realized it was just Johnny’s gun. She continued to swerve the car to ensure that hitting either the car itself or the tires would prove difficult. She peeked through the mirror to see Johnny's form slight lying down in the back seat and then out the window to see Toby, something that was unsuccessful. She brought her eyes back to the road and nodded and Johnny's words. "No problem," he answered him.

She straightened the wheel out and took her foot of that gas just a bit, slowing down a tad and driving safely. She turned her head quickly when she heard the small sound of glass shattering and she saw the windshield crack. She smiled and turned her head back around, giving him another two seconds of straight driving and then continued to turn when she heard the round finish.

"Good job," She told him from the front as a small laugh came from her mouth. It was the second chase in one day, she was doing good. She nodded at what he had told her. "Don't worry, Toby's in good hands," She winked, knowing he wouldn't see it but it was something she was so accustomed to doing that she just did anyways.

Aiden tried to look for Toby as she neared where they had dropped him off and she slowed down a bit once more, afraid that if he were trying to jump back into the car he wouldn't have time but knowing somehow that he wouldn't be stupid enough to jump in front of the car or anything. She drummed her fingers on the steering wheel and looked in the back mirror, noticing the men in the white van suddenly a lot closer than she had remembered. She cussed softly under her breath; she did not want to get captured again.

"I hope Toby's idea is a fucking good one," She said absentmindedly, laughing a bit afterwards. Toby seemed like a man who would take care of things, especially if he said he would and she found herself trusting that he would.

Toby listened tensely to the sound of engine's and gunfire getting more and more distant. He panicked briefly that there may be some other road out of the camp that Aidena and Johnny would be forced to take, but it was too late to change his plan. If something went wrong, those two would be forced to fend for themselves and Toby would be left sitting like a lemon behind a pile of logs.

He gasped with relief when he heard the sound of engined coming back in his direction, along the same path just as he'd instructed Aiden to follow. The jeep came into view, scooping up out of the depression that formed the lumber yard. Hot on it's heels was the white truck.

Toby dropped his head slightly so as not to draw any gunfire. He had cover enough, but he needed to time this just right, and bullets whizzing past his head wasn't going to improve his concentration any.

"Man I could really have done with a couple of dummy runs...." he mumbled to himself, waiting until the two cars were only a short distance from passing, and the pulling with all his might, levering the few logs on top of the pile free, so that they tumbled down the ridge.

They moved a lot faster than he expected, and his heart sank as it became apparent he'd pulled too soon, and the logs were going to hit the jeep! In a vain recovering attempt he lept over the remaining logs and sprinted down the hill.

By a stroke of luck, the first log rotated slightly and got it's end caught in a slight pit in the embankment. The log behind it impacted against the first one, clipping over it. The delay was enough so that it missed the jeep, and landed squarely on the windshield of the white truck. It crashed so heavily that the rear of the vehicle actually came off the ground, and the front of it twisted causing the whole truck to roll dramatically.

"Alright!" Toby whooped, leaping over the logs which were piling up at the bottom of the slope, and running full pelt towards the jeep. In tandem with his hopes, the jeep slowed just enough for him to catch up, grab a door open and jump in.

"Good work guys!" he said, finally allowing a grin to grace his sweat-soaked face, "Now let's get out of here, head north-east, towards the greenhouses."

Johnny allowed himself a slight wry smile as he watched the logs hit the white van. Soon after, Toby was back in the jeep, commending them for their good work. Haeger, without looking away from the white van in his iron sights, said to Aiden: "You heard the man." He secured the G3 and withdrew from the rear of the jeep, once again getting into the back seats, where he placed the G3 between his legs with the barrel up. He leaned back and heaved a sigh of relief as he placed a cigarette in the side of his mouth and lit it. After exhaling a cloud of smoke, he said:

"Now that we have a moment of rest, I guess I should welcome the two of you to this shitty excuse for a country, so...welcome to Leboa-Seko, the rear end of Africa." A dry laughter later, he added: "And the Jackal's playground." His face having turned serious, he pointed at Toby with the fingers still clutching the cigarette, saying: "You better remember I said that, my friend. Leboa-Seko might look like just another African warzone to you yankees, but out here, even the warlords can't match the Jackal in power and influence. If you're gunning for him, count me in - but you better be careful. That merc team back there was out for blood, and they were there on mission from the Jackal - you were their target, I'm sure. The man keeps track of all his enemies, even those that hasn't even been born yet."

He shrugged, and added grimly:
"As I said, though, if you're gunning for him, count me in. I hate that motherfucker to death."

Aiden smiled slightly at Toby's praise after he got inside the car. She nodded at Toby’s command as well as Johnny's and she turned the car north-east, feeling her eyes dart around for a greenhouse she would find. She slowed the car down a bit, telling herself that they were no longer in a car chase and she had absolutely no reason to be going that quickly. She looked into the back mirror and saw the large white van on its back. She grinned and laughed softly, happy that they had been able to get out of the car chase, not that she really had thought that they wouldn't.

The grin widened when Johnny welcomed them to Leboa-Seko. She wouldn't tell him that she had already been here more than a few time, that fact was unimportant right now. All she did was say a quick thank you and shoot him a soft smile before putting her eyes back on the road once more. Though the grin was quickly wiped off of her face at the Jackal comment, her hatred flaring up for the man once more. She started to drum her fingers nervously on the wheel before clenching her hands around it, watching her knuckles turn white. She was going to kill that man, she had vowed it. She did feel slightly comforted at the fact that it wasn't her the Jackal had been going after, perhaps he had forgotten about her. The common logic at the back of her mind told her that was quite unlikely, she had a feeling the Jackal would not give up so easily.

"Well, if we're going after this guy I guess I'll come with. I mean you guys do need a lucky charm." She told them with a wink, grinning once more. She softened her hold around the wheel and started looking around the car with one hand, her eyes darting back and forth from the road and the compartments she was opening. She wanted to see if she could find any worthwhile in this car; perhaps she could even find some more weapons. "What do you think this guy had carrying around?" She asked with a small giggle before grinning as she leaned over and opened the compartment on the passenger’s side. She pulled out a few cartons of cigars and then a medium sized roll of cash.

"No wonder his car door was locked," She thought out loud to herself before sitting up when she had noticed the green house out of the corner of her eye, lurching the car to park in front of it. "So, anyone know for sure why they were chasing us?" She asked before putting the car in park.

Toby sat with his eyes closed, catching his breath as the others spoke, and as Aiden got them out of the lumber yard and out onto the dirt track through the jungle. He listened with particular interest to Johnny's relation of the situation in Leboa-Seko.

"So," Toby appended Haeger's story, and also partly in answer to Aiden's question about why they had been chased, "seems like the Jackal has enough people who hate him even within the country. But I'm gonna guess it's mostly foreign mercs. I'm also going to guess that there have been attempts before to force him out of the country or take him down. But I'm also going to guess that those attempts required mercs to form teams, and that forming teams generated unwelcome attention both from the factions and from the Jackal's men. And for a last guess, I'm gonna say that unwelcome attention is the reason business at Mike's ain't so great these days. How did I do?"

He pulled out his map again, satisfied that it had proved relatively reliable so far. By the looks of things - and provided they didn't run into any more trouble before getting there - the greenhouses were about fifteen minutes away at a decent pace. Didn't really matter if it took longer, the sun was starting to set and for a job like this darkness was going to be their friend.

Looking to the side, he searched around for the IED he'd put together earlier. In the haste of the moment he'd absent mindedly left it rolling around the jeep, but he decided not to mention that. He doubted Johnny and Aiden would appreciate it.

When Aiden chipped in saying that she wanted in on any attempt to go after the Jackal, Toby raised his eyebrow in surprise.

"So we're all happy to probably be the next trio of bodies down the river?" he said flippantly, "Awesome. In that case, we're gonna have to find somewhere to base other than Mike's. If we're seen together too often there, it's gonna generate suspicion. No doubt there's a ton of safehouses in the region, but we're either gonna have to find one that isn't occupied, or we're gonna have to clear one out. But we can worry about that tomorrow. We have to go back to Mike's with the Khat-sack anyway."

He checked the shotgun slung at his side, noting how it was in much better condition than the weapons being used by the factions. The same was true of all the weapon's they'd procured from the arms merchant. At least now they'd have a slight edge over the APR soldiers when it came to weapons malfunctioning.

And for a last guess, I'm gonna say that unwelcome attention is the reason business at Mike's ain't so great these days. How did I do?"

Haeger made a conceding move with his hand.
"Very good. Let me give you a bit of insight. A live example, if you will. Me." He looked out the window with a distant glimmer in his eyes. "I came here a few months ago, with a band of South African private contractors. We were here for an escort job with an NGO. They had a lot of important things with them - things like generators, fuel, food...things valuable to the Jackal." He scratched his chin. "Someone sold us all out. We were ambushed. My entire team got wiped out by a mercenary army. I'm the only one, the only and single person from that convoy, who got out alive. Everyone else was killed during the fight, or executed if they survived it." When he looked back at Toby, his eyes seemed slightly glazed, as if he was crying, yet couldn't find any tears to shed.

"Those mercs were my friends. Those NGO workers were innocent people. I've been here for many months now. I've made a lot of new friends among my fellow expatriates and mercenaries...only to see them killed for crossing the Jackal on some bitch detail. The man thinks he's some kind of god, and I want to prove him wrong. Until a few hours ago, I thought it was just a hopeless dream of mine. Now I'm thinking if I stick around with you, I'll get the chance. So you're not getting rid of me even if I die."

He leaned back in his seat, heaving a sigh and staring up into the jeep's ceiling. Thinking back to the many friends whose lives had been taken in the Leboa-Seko conflict made him exhausted.

"So we're all happy to probably be the next trio of bodies down the river? In that case, we're gonna have to find somewhere to base other than Mike's. If we're seen together too often there, it's gonna generate suspicion. We have to go back to Mike's with the Khat-sack anyway."

Haeger mumbled through the smoke of tobacco filtering out his mouth:
"I know a place. An old copper mine. Used to be an illegal South African-run operation during Apartheid. Run by a shell company to circumvent sanctions against the Apartheid government. It closed down along with the company in -93. It's a bit of a way from here, but it should be abandoned still. Nobody knows about it except me. My crew were going to use it as a base of operations in the country after our first job, but we never got that far. It might serve our needs pretty well." He looked at Toby and Aiden with a wry smile.

"Unless you're afraid of the dark, or the lady over there can kickstart an old generator again."

Aiden grinned and put the car in drive once more, setting out towards Mike's bar. The distance wasn't too far away and she saw no rush so she actually drove at a slow speed, well, slow according to her. She peeked in the mirror at the bag of khat laid in the car, sitting harmlessly beside Toby. She grinned in victory, knowing that that small bag would get them an in with a lot of people here. People they needed an in with, skilled mercenaries because if you weren't dead yet, well, it meant you had a certain degree of skill here. She looked back to the road, wondering how many people that would impress or how many people they would be able to bribe to help them with that small bag. Her guess wasn't that many.

"And I'm sorry about that mission. I know how it feels to lose someone important to you," She told him, leaving it at that. She didn't say anymore, not wanting to profusely apologize and get the memories into his mind once more. Aiden wouldn't be able to stand losing teammates, which was the sole reason as to why she usually worked alone. She like the socializing fact of it but when it all came down to the survival part of it, it always scared her that she would be left alive while her friends would die.

Aiden nodded at the base idea, something that made her a lot happier than they realized. She wouldn't have been able to go to the last place she had been staying at for fear of being killed in her sleep so she was expecting to sleep wherever she found a place. But an abandoned place sounded just as good. She beamed at Johnny, laughing a small bit at his joke- well, what she thought was a joke. She wasn't quite sure with him but she would take it as a joke regardless. She wasn't one to constantly stay serious, in fact, she was hardly ever serious. She knew being a mercenary and not being too serious was a generally bad combination but it didn't seem to faze her.

"Well, I'm not afraid of the dark and I don't know much about you two but I say light never hurt anyone. And for kickstarting the generator, as you guessed, I'm your girl. Anything with wires I can do," She told them with a wink. She had always been good withthings such as those and she always enjoyed fixing old things. Hell, she had fixed so many generators just in Africa alone it was uncanny.

She jerked the car sharply left and then braked it, the process a lot smoother than it should have been. She put it in park and placed the emergency break on now that they were in front of Mikes once more. She opened her door before turning around. "Don't lock your door, we'll need to get into it again and I really don't feel like crawling through the window again." She smiled at them and then hoped out of the car, turning around once more to face them. "And if you guys see him again and he makes a scene, just knock him out or something, I really don't want him leaving with the car," she added as an afterthought.

She left the car idling and she peeked through the dirty bar window to check that no one too suspicious sat in the bar, making sure the Star .45 was tucked into the loop on her jean shorts. If something went down she wanted to make sure she had a weapon but then again the weapon would make her look more menacing and take away the fact that she looked like a lost girl in Africa on a misfortunate chance. Well, they could always just assume she found it and was using it for safety, Aiden hoped that was what they would do.

"Ready?" She asked with a small grin before opening the door, not waiting for an answer.

Re: [OOC] FarCry 2

I won't be able to post either this coming week, as we'll be stuck "out in the field", i.e., in tents, for the next six days or so. You guys can auto my character while I'm gone, as long as it's not out-of-character behavior. ;)

Re: [OOC] FarCry 2

sorry it took so long. School came up and bit me in the ass >.<

Re: [OOC] FarCry 2

I didn't want to give the impression that Haeger jump at any chance to get merc work. Hence, I had him prepare to leave, hahaha. XD Feel free to stop him. If not, I'll figure something out to have him return to the bar right away again. :D

Re: [OOC] FarCry 2

It's all cool bud!

Re: [OOC] FarCry 2

No worries, man. I got stuck without a 'puter for three days after making my last post. Anyway, I'll have a reply up today or tomorrow. :D

Edit: Changed your post a bit to fit more with the idea I have of Haeger. Hope you don't mind. :D

Re: [OOC] FarCry 2

Hey Loxley, filled in for ya a bit there, hope you don't mind. Just that we have a pretty sweet pace going, and you did say you might have trouble getting on at times. If you get online before Aiden replies, feel free to make a post that completely disregards and supercedes mine. :-)

Re: [OOC] FarCry 2

Gotcha. I have limited time with the 'puter anyway right now, so there's no rush, haha. XD

Re: [OOC] FarCry 2

It just occured to me that there's no real reason Johnny should have started the RP with no weapons...oops! Not your fault Loxley, you were just following the rules! And you handled it very well. :) Once Toby and Aiden make their escape, they'll be headed to Mike's bar, so you won't be on your own for much longer.

Re: [OOC] FarCry 2

OK! Starting scenarios are as follows. We're all seperate to begin with, so just develop your character and do what you like, but don't make anything major happen until we're all together. I promise it won't be too long. :)

And one last thing...your opening posts don't need to be as long as mine! :-) I just needed to create the events that are eventually going to bring all our characters together.

Johnny Haeger - He's been in the country for some months after a job went disastrously wrong. He's been playing both sides against the middle and keeping himself alive and in the money all this time, spending most of his time at an ex-part hangout known as "Mike's Bar". The beer's local, but it's better than nothing, and the factions don't bother anyone there. However, things have been tense lately, and a few of the mercenaries haven't returned from their little soirees on behalf of the factions. And last night, two of Johnny's friends went out, saying they were being paid by the APR to launch a dawn-raid on a weapons caravan delivering arms for Gakumba (UFLL). Neither of them came back, and Johnny finds himself at Mike's bar with only a handful of remaining companions, and a whole lot to worry about...

(Loxley, you can play your companions as NPCs if you wish, and either take them from the canon characters of FarCry2, or just make them up, entirely up to you!)

Aiden Grey - Coming to Africa to escape her troubled home situation, she surprised some of the local gangs by being a heck of a lot tougher than they originally took her for. Having proven her worth, a few of them trusted her with a couple of low-level runner jobs. Eventually, an APR liutenant got too big for his boots and sent her to assissinate his boss, so that he could get into the hotseat while it was still warm. Unfortunately, after Aiden had left to begin the mission, the liutenant in question realised he could gain even more brownie points if he called his boss to tell him about the impending assissination attempt. Thus, Aiden was double-crossed and captured. In self-defence she naturally told her captors that it was one of their own liutenants who had sent her, and the suspicious captain saw some truth in her story. So, while the captain decides who to believe, she's being kept under watch at the fishing pier by Lake Segolo - not strictly a prisoner...as long as she makes herself useful and keeps herself out of trouble. But she's certainly not free either...

Re: [OOC] FarCry 2

Thanks, man. I'm glad you liked it. I've never roleplayed a Swedish character before even though I'm from Sweden myself, so I figured I should give it a shot for once. XD

I should warn you, though. I'm enrolled in Army bootcamp currently, so my activity might be a bit bad at times. It shouldn't be too much of a problem from now on, but there might be the occasional period. If those comes along, feel free to auto my character as you see fit. ;)

Re: [OOC] FarCry 2

Wow, two awesome bios there guys. I'll give it a couple more days and we'll get going. I'm really not fussed about the number of people we get, I'm more interested in quality. Not RPed with you before Loxley but your profile impressed me so I'm sure we'll get on just fine! ^_^
