Fatal Reality

0 INK

A cursed video game called Fatal Reality hits the shelves, everything is extremely realistic, a little too realistic. Horrors and Nightmares are no longer the 8-bit animations you see.

975 readers have visited Fatal Reality since Trickster132 created it.

Introduction

In the small, quiet, quaint town of Stonestown Abbey near London, England. The survival horror videogame "Fatal Reality" made by a multi-million dollar company called NexCorp based in London, England has been universally acclaimed by many gaming sites including IGN.com, Gamespot, 1UP and Famitsu. Many magazines critically praised the game for its extremely realistic graphics and the deep, ominous storyline it carries. The anticipated game soon hits the shelves at many gaming stores around the world such as Gamestop and many others. However, the day after the release, the murder rate has shot up drastically and many have died just like how their character or avatar in the game have died. Some have died through decapitation, others have died by being grinded into a bloody pulp but most people died in many ways. The critically acclaimed game's graphics are not your usual 8-bit animations or 3D animations, it is extremely real and IT WILL HAPPEN IN REAL LIFE

Prologue

GAME, Stonestown Abbey, London, England

The GAME store was filled with many people waiting in lines for "Fatal Reality". A man came out of the store holding a collector's edition of the recently released game "Fatal Reality". Walking away from the store, the man went back to his house since it was quite near from the store. Opening the game, he loved the collector items from the bobbleheads to limited-edition in-game costumes inside the collector's edition box. Starting up his PlayStation 3, he inserted the disc inside the console. First, it showed a white screen showing the NexCorp company logo. The start-up screen appeared and the man pressed the start button. The man's in-game character appeared and the game's setting was dark and lacked any form of lighting. As he was led into one of the corridors, a monstrous creature with sharp blades for arms attacked the character and soon, the creature decapitated the character and cut it up to chunks of flesh. Soon, the bloody red words of "GAME OVER". Frustrated with the game, the man took a break and then a shadow that looked just like the in-game creature appeared behind him and cut his head off first and eviscerated him into chunks of flesh just like the game did. The shadow disappeared and all that's left is a headless man cut up to chunks of flesh.

Clary received a phone call from her favorite gaming store saying that a new video game has arrived. Without hesitation, she asked the employee to reserve her the game, thanked him, then hanged up. Clary immediately hurried to the game store, afraid that she would lose her reservation to some random person if she arrived late. when she arrived in the game store, there were people lined up, all waiting to get their copies of Fatal Reality. But lucky for her, the employee who called her have been waiting for her outside the store. As soon as he saw Clary, she gave the video game and Clary paid for it, then went home.

' I can't wait to play this game ' Clary thought as she placed the disc on the console. And she began playing.

James Riley sat down in front of his PS 3, looking at the new game in his hands with a passion almost bordering on hunger. He had been waiting for this moment for almost a year, since the game had fist been announced. The survival horrors that had been released in the last few years had been disappointing, with more focus on the action elements than horror - neither Inherent Malevolence 6, nor The Mound of Solitude: Sherds of Mnemosyne were anything more than third-person slashers with awkward controls. But this... Once he had seen the short video extracts and the screenshots, he had been sure that this would be different from any other horror game he had played.

He opened the package with trembling hands, his eyes ablaze, and inserted the CD. At first there was nothing, only a black screen, and he could only hear the whirring of the CD within the console. Then the credits appeared on a white screen, burning into his eyes within the darkened room. He adjusted the options to his liking, and with his heart beating faster each second, selected "New Game".

Savannah was at home when the phone rung. They said that her copy of "Fatal Reality" had come in. She had been waiting for this ever since she first heard about it. Usually she was allowed to play the games early. Why she wasn't allowed to try this one was a mystery to her, but made her want to play it even more. She quickly got into her car and drove to the video game store. She then payed the cashier and went home to go play it.

When she got home Savannah ran upstairs and ripped off the packaging. She then turned on her PS3 and put in the dist. Once she started up the game she pressed "New Game". Then the opening screen came up.

Lucenzo recently got the game"Fatal Reality" He had beaten other horror-based games but most of them focused too much on action and such but anyway, he inserted the CD. At first there was nothing, only a black screen, and he could only hear the whirring of the CD within the console. Within seconds, the main menu apeared, clicking on the "NEW GAME" option, he started up a new game. After hearing the dramatic dialogue from the game, it was time to play, his in-game character appeared, the setting was dark and lacked any sort of lighting. As the character walked along the corridor, he saw a girl supposedly staring into space. It turned its head backwards and smiled horribly with a devilish grin. Turning towards the character, the demented girl attacked it and the character had a pistol ready and shot it in the head. From there, the girl lay dead. Lucenzo thought to himself "This is so real... It looks way too real" as he played the game.

As Clary's in-game character appeared, she started walking through the dark corridor. There were several weapons on the floor, but she only got the nearest which was a handgun. ' I hope ammo can be found here too ' Clary thought. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, a weird shaped zombie appeared and tried to kill her, good thing that Clary was quick and immediately shot the zombie in the head. The insides of the zombie splattered onto her character, but besides that, nothing bad had happened to her.

" Good. I don't want to be dead on the first time of playing this game " she muttered as she continued playing.

The hallway was dark, and yet James could hear the sound of approaching steps. He readied his gun, and shot as soon as the monster came into sight. It was dead - lying on the ground was the nude body of a small girl with the face of a dog. It was surprisingly realistic, and even made him shudder when he saw the close-up of the..thing he had killed. However, now that he had begun playing, his excitement had abated a little. The effects were beyond anything he had seen until then, and the atmosphere was incredible. But where was the plot? A tutorial had been offered, which he had immediately skipped, but beyond that, there hadn't been any cutscenes or interactions. Would his character gradually find out why he was roaming those dark halls filled with those infernal creatures?

As he carefully made his way through the hallways and rooms carefully, killing the creatures from time to time, running and hiding from them at other times, and picking up whatever item that he came across, he noticed something else, something very peculiar: The more he played, the more his character seemed to resemble himself, even in terms of the way he moved.

Clary walked inside a door that seemed to have ended the long corridor. She opened it carefully and saw that she was inside a hospital room. The room was creepy and there were rusty things everywhere. But what she didn't notice that there was someone or something lying on the bed. The thing stood up, it was a mummified nurse, and it had a knife in her hand. The nurse walked slowly towards her character and tried to kill her, but before it got too close, she shot it in the head. Turning around to get out of the room, she saw a lot of mummified nurses, and it seemed that she had been transported into the lobby of a hospital. Clary's character ran from them as fast as the character could, but she was slowed down because of a cut in her thigh. Looking down quickly, she saw that a mummified nurse had thrown a knife at her, slowing down her running.

Clary paused the game to catch her breath. ' I didn't expect this to be so realistic. It was almost like I was the one in the game ' she thought as she stood up to get a glass of water. But something made it impossible for her to do it. Looking down at her leg, blood was coming out in a steady flow, and there was a knife on the floor, just like what happened to her character.

Savannah looked around in the game. Her character resembled her all the way down to her eyes. She noticed that at the moment she seemed to be in a old hospital building. As she slowly approached a old wooden door she readied her gun. She then quickly kicked open the door and shot at all the monsters in there. Never in her life has she seen graphics this realistic. It was great. As time when on Savannah got more and more into the game. She was having a blast. The monsters would pop out and as soon as they would she would kill them. Her character started to act like her more and more. Sometimes her character would hide without her having to push a button.

After a while Savannah noticed that there were no other characters, but enemies in the game. She remembered that she had skipped the tutorial and didn't know what the whole point of the game was. Then she picked up the box and it said, "Your mission is to survive and..." The game description them got cut off. It looked like the game designers did it on purpose for a dramatic affect, but she wasn't so sure. Then Savannah checked her e-mail and went back to the game.

The long corridor was dark and murky, it seemed like it was an eternity. As soon as Lucenzo arrived at the remaining door, there was a baby-like doll, it had a demented face with none of the facial features people have. It was nude and the head turned backward towards Lucenzo's character. It extended it's arm and clawed at Lucenzo's character's face. However, as Lucenzo felt a scratch on his face. He thought to himself "It's extremely realistic but is it too realistic?" and after thinking to himself. Lucenzo shot the doll's head with a double-barrel shotgun he had obtained earlier in the game.

The dark hallways, which James had noticed to belong to hospital, seemed to know no end. He searched each room with a glimmer of hope for some plot at first, and yet his movements became more mechanical and despite the stress induced by the game, more careless as each room failed him, compelling him to roam the corridors in disappointment. It was at this point that he came up to a set of wide double-doors, turned brown-black as everything else in ages of rust. Just as he reached out to the doors, he heard a noise behind him, in the dark. He turned around just in time to meet..something that was composed of patches of the light pink of flesh, and the red and brown of blood lunged onto him, and the next thing he felt was something soft and round covering the area from beneath his nose to his jaw, a sensation of slight prickling, and then a horrible sensation of being sucked, with a slurping noise that could easily churn one's stomach. He froze for a moment in panic, and then when he could recollect his thoughts, he raised his arm and shot the...thing, whatever it was, in what could be called the head. It was dead. He inhaled deeply and exhaled. It was dead.

James started when he heard a knock on the door; snapping out of the game, he paused it right before the door was opened without his consent.
"Urgh, what is this smell?!" the familiar voice of his sister complained as she took a step into the dark room. "Are you playing games again? Well, I hope you're having fun, but dinner is about to be ready. Can you come downstairs and help?" By this time, he had already turned in order to face her. She had not noticed at first, yet as her eyes slowly adjusted to the dark, she became aware of something. She stared and frowned, and then turned the lights on to make sure to confirm what she thought she had seen.
"James..What are those?" she asked, her voice quivering in concern and pointing at his face. If he were someone else, she would have suspected some kind of a prank, but she knew her brother. He was too lazy to bother with this sort of a prank.
"What are... Is there something on my face?" he asked, standing up.
"You should probably go to the bathroom and check it out." She stepped aside so as to give him way. How could he not have noticed? Did it not hurt?

Turning off the game - for he had not encountered any savepoints, making it likelier that the game autosaved itself - he made his way to the bathroom and stared at his reflection in the mirror. On his face was a circular mark of pink, encompassing a wide surrounding his mouth, and tiny, darker puncture marks lining the borders of the pinkish area. Blood was still trickling from some of the holes.

" What the hell? " Clary muttered as she limped towards the medicine cabinet and fixed herself up. " I'm perfectly sure that there wasn't a knife here in the first place " she added as she cleaned the knife under running water, wiped it dry and placed it on the kitchen counter. After some moments of realization, she came up with one conclusion: that whatever happens to her character, happens to her in the real life. But again, maybe she was wrong. She'll do herself a minor injury in the game, and if she pauses the game and it really happens to her, then it will confirm her suspicions.

' Later, I will check if there were cases of the players who played Fatal Reality died ' Clary thought as she sat back down on the couch and continued playing the game.

When it was 1 o'clock in the morning Savannah had to save the game. She didn't really know how, so she just turned off her PS3. As she got up she quickly went to the bathroom. Something on her arms were bothering her. As she looked in the mirror she realized her arms were all bright red, like they were burned. As she racked her brain she tried to remember if she was allergic to something in the house. Of course nothing came to mind, she wasn't allergic to anything. As she touched one of the burns it hurt. She quickly ran them under some cold water from the sink.

When she was done she laid in her bed and started to think. She thought about Fatal Reality. There was something suspicious about it. For one there seemed to be no plot. This was a big thing to drive a person towards a goal in the game. Savannah had played plenty of different games, but none seemed as pointless as this one. Yet, it was strangely addicting. There were no instructions; no rules. It just seemed like you had to survive in the game.

What worried her is she wasn't sure how she had got the burns. As she remembered playing the game a thought ran across it. She remembered that she had gotten her character's arms burned. As she remembered it the scene got clearer. She was walking through the boiler room when she saw something in the back of the furnace. When she reached to get it the furnace then turned on and she got her arms burned. Savannah then sat up abruptly. What if whatever happened in the game happened in real life!

Lucenzo washed his face and soon he got himself a bandage to help up the scratch from the monstrous baby-like abomination. Just thinking about it made him shiver. After he patched himself up, his sweaty hand firmly gripped the SIXASIS controller to the PS3 and resumed the game. He kept playing and the rest was a breeze. Soon, he saved the game and turned off the console. Walking to his room, there was a long silence even though, there wasn't even any abominations and monsters. He fell asleep to his bed, closing his eyes as a world of darkness appeared

James reluctantly descended the stairs in order to help set up the table. He bowed his head for as long as he could in order to prevent anyone from seeing the impressions on his face, but his hope of slipping by unnoticed was almost immediately shattered beneath the warm, honey-coloured light of the kitchen, when his mother let out a small shriek. It took many words and cheerful laughter to persuade his family that it was a makeup attempt for a LARP he would be doing with some of his friends. Despite their calmed countenance, he was not entirely certain that they had been convinced

The dinner went by with the rest of his family chatting, although the words passed by unnoticed by him as he wondered about the nature of the game he had begun. When the meal was over and the plates carried away to the kitchen, he was caught by his sister and dragged upstairs to her room, a rather brightly coloured place he seldom entered. Passing a bookshelf so full that books were almost gushing out, shallow stacks of photocopies and a desk with various papers and stationary strewn about, they arrived at her bed, and with unusual assertiveness, Katherine pointed at the bed, impelling him to sit down.

"You've seen it in the mirror, and I can tell that they are real. So please tell me, how did you get those marks?" she asked him, her voice softer than the resolution reflected on her face.
"I don't know, Katherine." James replied in irritation, turning his eyes to the window, from where part of their garden and their neighbours' house could be seen. He couldn't tell her, she wouldn't believe him in any case. And why did she always poke her nose in whatever he did, trying to impose her own conception of good onto him?
"It must've been an animal, right? But there aren't any animals that could leave marks like that; even if it were a leech, the mark would've looked like a Y..." she murmured, her eyes fixed on the mark on her brother's face. After a short pause, she spoke in a more audible voice laden with concern. "James, what is this? Don't neglect your health; what if the thing that did that to you was carrying some sort of a disease?"
"Stop trying to lecture me. Everything's fine, I'll be okay, it wasn't an animal or anything like that; it just appeared on its own." He got up as he spoke, taking a step towards the door, but was stopped by Katherine.
"James, I'm not trying to lecture you, I am very sincerely worried about this mark. How can you not know what left such a mark? How can that just appear on its own? Do you think I'll believe these excuses? I don't believe in intuition or..um, anything like that, but I have a very bad feeling about this." Her voice rose in a crescendo as she spoke, gripping her brother's arm tightly. "Please just tell me what it is! What if it's dangerous? What if something happens to you?!"
"Nothing will happen to me, Katherine. Don't worry so much, it might affect your health or your grades or something. Well, good night!" he replied in a cheerful tone and breaking free of his sister's clutch despite her fiercest objections, returned to his den.

Undisturbed by his sister, to his relief, he turned on his PS3 once more, this time with a clear objection in mind: He would try to discover the secret to this game, how it reflected itself to reality, what the purpose of the whole thing was.

Clary made sure that her character will get a minor injury, like stumbling down a short staircase. She then paused the game after some time and stood up. True enough, her arms were hurting and her left ankle was twisted in an unnatural angle. She groaned in pain and bandaged her ankle. Good thing that she had her medicine bag prepared. She opened her laptop and looked for some tabloids of recent deaths. She found a death of a man, exactly when the game Fatal Reality was released. ' God, I ought to go to the morgue tomorrow. But how do I save that thing? ' Clary thought as she looked to paused game.

She stared at the screen for some time and saw that there was a small doll at the side. She continued the game, seeing if the doll will attack her. But it did not. Clary character walked closer to the doll and saw that it was a save point. Clary sighed in relief, saved the game and turned off her console.

This is the prologue, for now, the characters will be on their own. In the main plot (the actual story), Our characters will meet each other through PSN (PlayStation Network, the online hub in the PS3).

Re: Fatal Reality

(I hope someone sees this.)

I am curious as to how you're planning to make all the characters interact. Will it happen during the later (in-game) games? Or are all of these factors up to the players? (I'm looking for a right time to kill my character's brother and actually start with my character, so..yeah.)
