"That was my sin, and this...this is my punishment."
Vincent is a difficult character to figure out. He is calm and dark and mysterious, and seems to prefer being alone to having much company, and yet he has a clear soft spot for other people, especially children. He is more loyal to those he considers friends than he would like to admit, and though he can be blunt and cynical and somewhat unpleasant to be around, if you wheedle hard enough, no matter how much he wants to refuse, he will generally help out. He comes across as cold and even heartless, when the truth is that he is remarkably sad, tortured by immortality and his failure to prevent what essentially led to the destruction of the world as it once was.
Cloud - "It's just that you're always so cold. I thought you didn't care what was happening."
Vincent - "Cold? Hmm...... I guess that's just how I am, sorry."

Once a member of the Turks, he was assigned as supervisor to the Jenova Project in Nibelheim, where he fell in love with Dr. Lucrecia Crescent. The pair of them fell in love, but when he discovered her hand in the death of his father, Grimoire Valentine, she distanced herself from him. Lucrecia eventually entered into a relationship with Vincent's nemesis, Professor Hojo, and became pregnant. The fetus was slated for use in the Jenova Project. The treatments on her unborn fetus made Lucrecia severely ill, and Vincent challenged Hojo on her behalf, resulting in his death by Hojo's hand. The Professor used Vincent's body in various experiments, strengthening him and increasing his endurance, and studying mutation, which gave Vincent his ability to shift into various monstrous forms without dying. The experiments, though considered a success, were deemed a failure because no matter what Hojo tried, Vincent remained suspended in living death. It was Lucrecia who eventually revived him, infusing him with Chaos-tainted mako. At first, Chaos could not be controlled, taking Vincent's strengthened body as his vessel, but with the addition of Vincent's father's Protomateria, he was finally able to regain himself. Shortly afterwards, Lucrecia's child, Sephiroth, was born, and she fell terribly ill. Blaming himself for her illness, but unable to know what a monster Sephiroth would someday become, Vincent retreated into mourning, sealing himself inside a coffin to await reawakening by Cloud and his companions twenty-three years later.
Her ultimatum was followed by four shots aimed perfectly between his eyes. Caius held out his hand and a sphere of grey burst outwards, stopping all time. Caius smiled, he was fond of using Etro's gifts to bring about her downfall. He walked casually around the bullets and jumped to the roof Lightning had just landed on. He glared at his nemesis as she was frozen. "Why can't you understand my pain?" She was helplessly frozen before him, but Caius couldn't attack without time resuming. Even if he could he would never resort to such underhanded tricks.CAIUS BALLAD! You're not welcome here. Leave!
