Alaric continued to consume mouthful after mouthful of his stew like clockwork, a mass of questions swirling in his mind behind his blank, expressionless face. Where were the Holy Lands? What would they find there? Would the journey be a safe one? Were the Holy Lands safe? What did that book the Euterpe wanted so badly contain? Every mouthful of stew seemed to bring about a new question until Euterpe ran over and began fussing over him loudly, her voice filled with concern.
"Oh my! Alaric! You look awful! Did you sleep at all? Please tell me... I won't let you travel in such a horrid condition... That'd be a crime against my oath..."
Alaric appreciated Euterpe's concern, but he really couldn't be doing with her mollycoddling him like this, he wasn't going to allow himself to become a hindrance. What did she mean by "a crime against my oath"? What oath? Whatever oath she was on about, Alaric was going to have to make her commit this "crime".
"Yeah, I got some sleep." Alaric replied, his speech barely audible and slightly slurred, "I got to sleep about an hour or two after you did, and I woke up about half an hour ago. Although I wish I hadn't slept at all..."
Alaric mumbled the last sentence to himself, he would have been very surprised if Euterpe understood a single word of it, Hell, he wouldn't have been too shocked if she hadn't understood anything he said. He took another drink from his glass of bubbling liquid and continued speaking:
"You needn't worry yourself over my welfare. I've travelled in states far worse than this one, and I'm still here. If something goes wrong, it will be my fault, not yours, for not knowing my limits."
Alaric finished the last of his stew and drink before standing up wearily and ushering for Euterpe to follow him.
He lead her up the stairs and into his room, where the completed book rested on his desk. He picked up both books and handed them to Euterpe.
"I'm sorry, but I can't remember a single word I wrote." Alaric apologised, "I was too tired to process any of the information, and I wanted to finish as quickly as I could so I could go to bed."
Hajime slowly woke up on his bed in the hotel. “Rmmm….” He turned over onto his back. This bed, although he was grateful for it, was very uncomfortable. It seemed to be made up of little more than a few layers of cloth and a little straw covering a wood table. But it was a bed, nonetheless, and he was grateful for it. “Mm… what time is it?” He glanced out the window. Morning. “Greaaat…. Second night in a row I’m not nocturnal. Well, baby steps.”
Sighing, Hajime crossed his legs and sat on the bed for a few moments, thinking back to the last couple days. He had been mostly listening to Alaric, Maximilian, and the others educating him on the ways of the world that he and Miou had stumbled upon. While he was unsure about how Miou was taking it, he certainly was having a rough time of things. Every other word that they said didn’t make sense, and he had to constantly interrupt them in mid-flow just to be able to get a semblance of what they were saying. I hope I haven’t made them made by now…
Staring out the window again, he stared at the pale blue sky, flecked with clouds. “Well, at least the terrain looks like home,” he muttered. “Hm. Wonder if Miou’s awake or not.” He silently rose and opened the door to the room, peering out. It seemed like some people were active in the next room. Holding up a hand, he knocked on the door softly, wondering if he would get a response.
