Description

~Bang Cordinus~

~Age~
67

~Occupation~
Inventor, Engineer, Philosopher, Writer, Alchemist

~History~

Bang Cordinus was born not far from Silverstone. His father was a stubborn old warrior who had lost his fief to unscrupulous money lenders and a age long feud with a neighbouring Bann. Cast out and overcome with shame the family moved to escape the derision of those they knew. The mines of Silverstone beckonned.
What his father lacked in vision and drive his mother more than made up for with a kindred spirit and a sharp mind. She was from the Lowlands and had access to the best teachers in Penumbria, that is those who were willing to teach a girl. She quickly learned to dress as a boy if she wanted to stimulate her mind as opposed to her social graces. Book after book was stored in her mind, and abstract concepts constantly evolved in her thoughts. When she was married off to young Lord Cordinus in the rural Highlands, her only mental outlet was her young and gifted son. With a mind matching hers he absorbed and mastered everything she had learned by the time he was fifteen.

When young Bang designed a system of pulleys and pipes to feed fresh air into the depths of the silver mines his fortunes quickly changed. His mother called in her last favours and sent the boy to Langsmerth to study under the tutelage of another old free thinker and sage. The boy blossomed and quickly caught the attention of other teachers who noticed his capacity to absorb information and grasp complex problems, whether it be mathematical, philosophical, or logical. However, his time in the limelight was quickly extinguished, as jealous colleagues and intimidated teachers quickly banished the young prodigy as a sorcerer.

Bang returned to Silverstone where he further contributed with redesigned tools, a trolley and mule system, and advanced bookkeeping techniques to aid the growing town and mine. Every last Crown he saved was spent in Langsmerth on books, formulas, recipes, and new ideas. The boy became a man, and the man became the local repository of knowledge, and solver of intricate problems. He became known as Cordinus the Wise. To get away from his semi-celebrity status the Sage moved into a comfortable mountain home. Here he began his career as a contract inventor, with people quickly taking notice he started to get requests from all over the realm. His mistake was agree to work on weapons and war machines. As his fame spread so did the demand for his knowledge. The last challenge he accepted was to invent a special steel to manufacture weapons.

A dungeon in Arv Rondalion suddenly became his new home with Lord Arv Rondalion as his new landlord. With skills such as his, Bang's landlord soon called on him to start earning his keep, the result was a compromise. Bang now lives under house arrest just outside Arv Rondalion, quietly removed from society and the kingdom's consiousness. He has proven to be a key element in the meteoric rise of the Lowlands with his inventions gracing every corner of the Wardenship. Foremost among these was his enhanced steel formula, which allows Arv Rondalion to produce the finest weapons in all of Penumbria. Neither the Lords of Arv Rondalion nor his thirty-five years of imprisonment has dulled his sharp mind or diminished his passion for new ideas.

So begins...

Large bubbles of air floated to the surface of the pond, "Now cover the outlet with the re-breathing bag!" Bang shouted into the the copper bell-shaped speaking apparatus. Attached to its round bottom was a copper rod which disappeared into the water. It enabled him to speak to the diver inside one of Bang's new creations, number four of eleven commissioned by Lord Rondalion's master-at-arms. The bubbles disappeared and a satisfied grin transformed Bang's face. "Keep watching the hourglass and record the time!" he excitedly shouted at an assistant.

Fifteen minutes later the signal rope was going crazy, "Pull him out!" A huge oversized barrel with two leather satchels attached, rose out of the water. Men quickly twisted a trap-door on the side and it opened with a loud hissing sound as air escaped. An exhausted and sweating man emerged, "Fifteen minutes is not enough! We are going to need men from the Highlands, men who are used to light air of the mountains. They should be able to last longer in there." The old man wiped some of his white curls away from his eyes as he eyed his apprentice, "Please arrange for twenty Highlanders from the highest and most remote village, and make it fast, this must work by the time our patron arrives." By patron Bang meant the master-at-arms of the Ice Queen. All his work in the last thirty-five years had been exclusively for Arv Rondalion, he doubted whether anybody outside even knew of his existence.

The very purpose of his arrest was to ensure that all his inventions remain the sole property of the Lowland Wardens and their armies. Not all his inventions were meant for war, but lately the requests had all focused on warfare. Bang stopped caring years ago, his only focus was maintaining a retinue of helpers and all the materials required for his experiments. The bigger the challenge the happier the Sage. This latest one has been one of his most ambitious, and it provided significant implications in the balance of naval power in Penumbria.

~Bang Cordinus, Six Months Ago~

Bang selected another soaked plank of dark wood. Using a sharp dagger he pushed as hard as possible to see if he could penetrate the wet wood. The dagger quickly dug into the wood and then suddenly stopped. About half an inch had softened, and yet the wood had been submerged in water for more than a year. Next his men started pulling on a rope which was attached to a system of pulleys. They were stretching the wood and testing its strength. It did not budge, yet one of the ropes snapped and the frame of the pulley system creaked.

Of all the trees Bang tested this particular type withstood all the tests he subjected it to. It was a rare tree, and only found in the darkest recesses of the central forest. To obtain it his men had to pay off a female bandit leader in the forest. They told him she was called "The Witch of the Mist". It had cost him a small fortune, or rather it had cost Arv Rondalion many crowns.

The next step would be employing woodcutters brave enough to enter the dangerous parts of the forest in order to cut large enough quantities to produce his swimming machine. The few he had produced were made of an inferior wood reinforced with iron. They were unable to withstand the forces present under the waves of the ocean.

Furthermore, the man at arms of Arv Rondalion required him to install grappling hooks and and a large drill. This was to be attached on the outside but must be operated from inside. So huge crystals were purchased at Silverstone to make a looking glass large enough to navigate under water. It was still very difficult to know what was going on as they pedalled in the lake, with the sailor twice running into rocks.

Today, Right after Dawn

"Lower the hatch...now clamp it down with the tongs!" Bang excitedly shouted at one of his assistants. He now had a dozen of them as the master at arms had increased both the resources available to him and the manpower to achieve the goal that had been set after he had seen the potential of Bang's invention. The swimming machine slowly came to life as the three men inside started pedaling. Moving gradually it started to disappear under the water.

Two hundred yards away floated an old fishing boat. It was not fast or fancy, but it was sturdy and had a very thick hull. It had to be able to haul large loads of fish back to shore. Bang's swimming machine was now completely under water and could not be seen.

As the minutes ticked away they watched as first a little flash shot out of the water. Then a large explosion and half of the boat was suddenly engulfed in flames and immediately started dipping towards the side of the explosion. Less then twenty seconds later it had disappeared under the gentle waves.

Standing atop a hill looking down into the bay was the Master-at-Arms of Arv Rondalion. A smile started tugging at his lips, "Yes, the Ice Princess would be very pleased indeed. It was time for her to be informed about the existence of Bang and this tremendous experiment. It could alter her plans dramatically. With four swimming machines ready and eight more being built the ocean would soon be hers to control."

As the men exited the dome shaped machine Bang quietly hugged each in turn. This was one of his finest inventions and it might win him his freedom.

Arv Rondalion
As a merchant ship passed waving the signal flag for plan b the fisherman rowed in to the city and ran into a bar, heading straight to the back room. With the signal from the flag they spoke of what the plan was most people here were completely loyal, again some merchants would be sailing out today but the news of an inventor that had created a new water weapon was important to kill or capture.

Again the warehouse district was set on fire but instead of a dock riot, the inventors house was broken into and the guards killed, some of the group ran to the boat with all the papers they could find, while the others busted in a door where they found the inventor “come with us or die, don’t worry if you come with our boss has uses for you.”

Arv Stormkeep
As the giant ship passed the city a scene like in rondalion played, again merchants were the few that they were able to buy off. A fire and the riot played out like in the capital, but with less bars the middleclass and temples were dragged into the fight.

Langsmerth
The servant brought up some spiced wine and meat from the kings personal cooks, along with some for the lord of the highlands. What the servant didn’t know was that it had been laced with the drugs by the traitor paid off by sturmaz. He knocked on the door calling that food had been brought for the king and his guest.

~Bang's House, Just outside Arv Rondalion, Late at Night~

His brow distorted into a huge frown, Bang was completely absorbed in an ancient text recently acquired from Sundregn. Reading with a crystal meticulously shaped into a magnifying glass, he did not realize something was amiss outside till a rowdy group of dirty pirates burst through his door.

"Here's he is!" they shouted and roughly grabbed Bang by his arms dragging him out of the house.

"How dare you! Who are you! What do you want! You will pay for this!"

All his threats and pleas fell on deaf ears as the rogue men led him down towards the coast where Bang saw several ships floating just off the shore. Row boats were ferrying men back to the ships. Many of the pirates were wounded and it looked like they were coming back from a war. As Bang looked towards the city he saw several buildings on fire with people running around trying to put out the blaze.

The pirates forced Bang onto one of the row boats and quickly rowed towards a waiting ship. There was a sudden urgency on the decks and Bang arrived to a hive of activity. He realized what was the matter. The forces from Arv Rondalion were overrunning the pirate rabble on the shore and some of the ships were full of sailors who were unfurling the sails in order to come after the pirates.

Bang Cordinus had no idea what was going on, as he had spent almost thirty years in house arrest and in isolation from the rest of Penumbria. He was ignorant of the current political situation and did not even know who was in command of Arv Rondalion.

Well, it seems like I will be going to different pastures, hopefully they will be greener, the old man contemplated.

His clothes were rags, and large welts on his back reminded him of the beating. After the pirates had brought him to the small village they wanted him to create a fire weapon. Something that spit out fire. They insisted that Lord Sundregn had such a weapon and since Bang was the smartest inventor in Penumbria he must make one for Lord Hightower. At first, Bang had refused, and then the beatings had started. Eventually they had broken him and won his cooperation.

It is best to forget. Bang quietly filled several of the test tubes with the concoction before standing back. He pulled a lever which caused the mixture to be blown against the wall, where it was suspended for a few seconds before bursting into flames.

Someone applauded from the other end of the room. It was the quiet pirate who seemed to be in charge of this rabble. "Lord Hightower will be pleased old man." the pirate stated in a raspy voice. "And you will be rewarded. You may leave this room and go outside with two of my men as escorts, provided you continue to work on perfecting the fire machine. And remember, you cannot escape, this is Hightower. An ocean separates you from the rest of Penumbria."

Stumaz docked at the village and walked into the village where the inventor Bang was, it was on his island in the north side where they would have to sail around. He entered the room after getting the news about the fire weapon and saw the bruises on the inventor. He suddenly brought out the murder grin tuned around brought out his cross bows and shot both of the prisoner guards in the neck, the poisons on the darts killed them quickly. “WHY. IS. HE. BRUSED? We are pirates but that doesn’t mean that we can mistreat guests like this, he is smart enough that I don’t want to risk his life, he is to have a paycheck, free roam around the village, and anyone else who admits right now before I ask him that beat him” he reloaded his mini crossbows while he talked “doesn’t get a present from my crossbow. He gets as much paper and writing utensils as he wants and the one guard will follow him all day.” He entered the room and looked at the inventor “were there any other guards that beat you or any you have a problem with because I can always make an example. You and me are not different we both dragged ourselves up to our positions, you were thrown down once the nobles saw your flame as they threw me out when mine dwarfed the kings, let me tell you you’re useful and I would kill one of my seven captains for five more of you, and let me tell you all of my captains are the smartest, strongest and most ruthless things on the sea that’s saying something. Once I think that you are trustworthy enough, you will have zero guards following you, unless you do something completely stupid you have almost complete immunity from the death penalty. Your plans for the underwater ship, can you build more of those and how do the fire weapons work under water? ”

Somewhere in the tears
Normally the Gator was a swamp bandit, he knew his way around river and streams, but this job he was given made him feel bad for his countrymen, sturmaz had given him the job to stop at fishing ports both in the tears and around the island to pick up a shipment of slave to take north to trade for ships, materials, and mercenaries. Anyone who didn’t die and wouldn’t serve stumaz was rounded up and shipped north.

Thieves’ guild main hideout
As the meeting ended two of the best set out on their boat to the swamp lands “so let me get this straight, the boss wants us to steal signet rings, keys to the treasuries, and to replace food stores with poison, what does this get us?” the other slapped the other in the head “stupid, one we owe sturmaz favors, two with the keys we can send people to steal their treasure, three if stumaz wins then we all get immunity based on how much we contributed.”

Bang looked up at the giant before him, So this is the leader of these rogue men. How can Penumbria have changed so dramatically? He certainly kills with impunity.

"Do you have problems with any of the guards...?" The giant asked.

"No Sire, not anymore. I have been assisted and given the means to complete the task. Right now two assistants are sorting through my papers on which some of the designs are drawn. The rest are in my head. To make the underwater ship I will need Nujuni wood from the central forest. Without it the power from the water is too great and the ship would be crushed like an egg." Bang paused and watched if it all registered with the "pirate".

"Well my Lord, the fire weapon does not work underwater, unless you mean the exploding device. This is something we attach to the side of a ship and then allow to burn and great power destroyers the ship. And again, for it I need bat excrement from the Highland caves, or there is also some in God's Reach."

Bang could not believe this pirate, we are not that different!

"Thank you for your kindness Sire." Bang respectfully replied as the giant explained to him that he might one day be free to roam the fields outside. He had heard similar promises many times before, and knew that they were simply that. Empty words, uttered to manipulate. Smiling inwardly, Bang once again focused on the mixture of liquids to perfect the fire throwing machine.

Without the required materials to work on either his diving weapon or his explosive charges Bang had devoted the last week to improving and perfecting the ingenious repeating ballista of the pirate. With tangible excitement the old man had tirelessly worked into the night while the eyelids of his guards often fluttered shut. His drive had energized the few assistants that the giant Sturmaz had given him.

Bang immediately realized that the weakness of the repeating ballista lay in its poor draw strength. Due to the need for expedient reloading rates, the power of the projectile was significantly weakened. It took Bang less than fifty grains of sand to discover a proper solution.

He was looking at the machine right now. Perched on the edge of a cliff, a copy of the repeating ballista stood menacingly ready to bring forth destruction. Bang had replaced the wooden rewinding sprocket with a large pulley upon which a strong rope was twisted. Suspended from the rope hung a very large cage filled with boulders and all sorts of large rocks. The tremendous weight of this cage pulled on the pulley which, when released, spun the reloading mechanism of the ballista. Upon a large open field such a system would be worthless, but mounted on tall and defensible walls such a system provided the power of a normal ballista and the speed of the pirate's ballista.

"Fire!" Bang shouted at the men. The large cage started to descend down the side of the cliff, spinning the pulley to a dizzying speed while the "ka, ka, ka...ka....ka..." from the ballista could be heard above the "swish" of the large projectiles shooting out over the bay where they fell harmlessly into the ocean.

Bang Cordinus was dancing with joy! This is what he lived for!

Most of the ships escaped from the tears with some lumber and some guano, but some of the ships were caught in the tears and anchored in the middle waiting for some kind signal. While the ones that escaped sailed to bring the supplies for bang’s inventions.
Elsewhere on the island Typhon was sailing up to meet with bang with news of the new ballista he would give bang part of his promise. Back in the capital he had to lock his wife in the house till she got over that they were at war with the king. The others would do their jobs as long as they weren’t stupid they would get loot one way or another. As he entered he met with the ships and entered bang’s residence, “hello bang I got you some of the wood and guano, and thank you for improving my ballista. If you want I can get you a shack the same size as this in the country but you would still have to live with guards, or I can make it that your assistants are the only one’s watching you, I’m ruthless for idiots but I keep my word you may choice your choice of freedom. My only other question is wht special about the bat poop, why can’t we use human?”
