In the middle of the Caerdran caravan of merchant travelers and guardsmen—mercenaries paid to escort humans through the Wild Lands—there was a large wagon. Inside the wagon was a woman with hair black as night and eyes as gold as shadowstalker cats. Her dirty hands clasped at the wooden planks holding her captive and the woman’s eyes were red from many tears which had been shed.

“Pa-leese
” Her voice was a dry whisper from not having water as Loore pleaded to the mercenary walking behind her crude cage.

The Osrinarian flinched back at the cork being spit at her but once the skin was thrown into her cage, Loore was fast to pick it up. Her cracked lips eagerly sought out the water skin. The woman drank down as much as she could which was nothing more than a few swallows.

When it had run dry, Loore stalked toward where the guard was standing and held the skin back out to him. Her wild eyes watched him like some predator even through her weakened state. She smelled like sweat and fur. It was not a pleasant smell; the smell of a zafra: a slave.

“The gods will kill you,” the Osrinarian said in her native language unknown to most Caerdras. Only a scholar would be able to decipher her words.

Turning away from the mercenary, Loore moved to another side of the cage and placed both her hands on the wooden planks which served as prison bars. Her eyes swept through the forest tree line nearby. A shadow moved and prowled between the trees.

“Ta’ar,” Loore breathed, watching her companion for a moment longer before something else caught her eyes. She looked directly at Kangee; hunter’s gaze meeting another hunter’s gaze.

The Osrinarian was jolted around as the wagon-cage stopped so suddenly. She collapsed on the floor but was quick to pick herself back up. A lajak, Loore thought to herself. No, a fonak, like herself; a hunter.

“Rhellaya,” Loore called out to Kangee and the other men in a pleading tone. It sounded very smilier to a cry for help. The mercenary that had been so cruel to her in the small gift of water was far too near the cage’s bars. He was watching the wildsmen in defiance.

Loore wasted not the opportunity and grabbed him around the throat. Her fingers held fast around his throat and the woman started to suffocate the life from him as he struggled and claws at her hands to be free.

“Me drivolat,” Loore said while locking her gaze onto Kangee’s as he watched him rightfully kill the mercenary. Skin was torn away on her arms and the backs of her hands, and yet the Osrinarian did not so much as flinch. The man started to struggle less as spittle frothed from his mouth and dribbled down his chin. His face turned blue.

and then he was still with no life left to him. Dead eyes stared at nothing before the body was dropped from Loore’s grasp.

“Rhellaya anna fonak,” Loore said to Kangee, knowing that he would not know her words. But her eyes told him what she wished as they darted from the wooden bars to his own eyes.

“I know words,” Loore said with a heavy and strong accent as her eyes again locked dead onto he man offering her help. He had freed her from her bonds and the Osrinarian was forever in his debt. She slowly made her way out of the cage without taking his hand. Loore was a warrior and would show her strength until there was none left.

She stood tall and proud before him. Loore then reached out with a hand and touched the man on his chest where heart laid. There were no words to say ‘thank you’ in her language but the gesture would suffice.

“I debt you,” Loore said before her eyes trailed off to the forest tree line. A large, black, shadowstalker from Osrinar came forth. It was the size of three men and had enormous and graceful muscle clinging to it.

“Ta’ar,” the woman said with a pleased smile.

Ta’ar stalked toward Loore passing its bestial gaze upon the Caerdrans. A growl formed in its throat, deep and intimidating. It was a warning just as was the baring of its long dagger-like teeth. The shadowstalker came to the woman and pressed its great head against her torso. It’s chest began to vibrate in a throaty purr.

Loore ran her fingers through the silky fur of her companion but her eyes returned to Kangee. She watched him with curiosity. He looked like the other men but was not the other men. Where they were weak, he was strong.

“Loore.” She understood what he was saying mostly through the non-verbals Kangee had made.

“What you do men,” she asked as if wondering what Kangee had in store for the men that had caged her.

Night had fallen in the Wild Lands and the creatures of Night were beginning to stir along the tree lines. Only the light of flame kept all the men from harm and the patrolling of Ta’ar. Loore watched her companion with those intense golden eyes and a slight smile placed on her lips.

A piece of black bread was held in her fingers with a piece of hard, sharp, cheese placed in it. Sitting crossed-legged on the earth, the woman bit off another bite and chewed on it while her gaze sought out the man whom had saved her.

Loore’s eyes swept over the men bound together like zafras; slaves who would never become companion to shadowstalkers. A man glared right back at her and spat on the ground at his feet.

“It is a good night,” Loore repeated in a questioning tone. She knew some of the words but how they were said was difficult for the woman. Her people did not use words like “is” and “a”. The woman moved closer to Kangee and did not leave much space between them. Her eyes intently focused onto his and how he watched the sky above.

“Sheirak. Addo ajjalani asavva,” Loore said while taking Kangee’s hand and making him point to a star. “Sheirak,” she said while bringing up her other hand to spread his fingers apart. “Addo ajjalani asavva,” she then said. Sheirak meant star and the others had meant the night sky.

“You teach words?”

A word struck Loore as odd and her brow knitted together tightly in confusion. She dropped the man’s hand and folded hers into her lap.

“Heavens? What word mean,” she asked curiously as there was no word in her tongue that matched. There was no such thing as heaven for Osrinarians. A person lived and then they died. It was the way of life.

“Stupid bitch doesn’t even know what heaven is. She’s not meant to walk the lands without gods. Witch, I say!” It was the man that had spat at Loore that had spoken aloud.

“Ezas eshna tech ahilee!” Loore did not know what the man had said but by his tone alone, she knew that it was an insult.

“See? She talks the witches words, I say! You should kill her before she slaughters us all in our sleep!”

“No,” Loore said shaking her head with a smile. She had liked how Kangee spoke to the men from stone cities. It pleased her to see them treated as she had been treated even if in only words.

There were no words to say ‘family’ in her tongue. Each person was part of the whole to create one people. But she did know the word ‘god’.

“Vojjor. God,” Loore said before placing her hand on the man’s chest and she pushed against him not to force him to fall back but to apply pressure.

“People. God. Vojjor,” she repeated with that same smile. The fire danced in her eyes and it was clear just how untamable the woman truly was even for the Wild Lands. Loore’s gaze dropped from Kangee’s eyes and came to rest on his mouth. Her face drew closer to his and yet, just before anything could take place, Ta’ar stalked forward with his bestial grace and power to nudge Loore’s shoulder with his forehead.

The Osrinarian laughed and moved away from Kangee to wrap her arms around her companion.

“Sleep, Khangee.” And without another word, Loore rose from the fireside, slipped a leg over Ta’ar and rode the shadowstalker like man would a horse into the shadows.

Ta’ar was exceeding gentle around the children and purred for them all. It made Loore smile and she threaded her fingers in the great cat’s fur. The shadowstalker nudged a skinny runt of a kid with his enormous nose and made him fall over. Loore sighed and shook her head before turning her gaze upon Kangee.

“Home,” she repeated while trying to remember what the word meant. There was no word for ‘home’ in her tongue but Kangee was a good teacher. Loore had learned many words in their travels.

“My home is much different than yours,” she said before dismounting Ta’ar. The great beast swatted his large tail and ended up smacking a poor child in the face, who in return just laughed.

“And what happen to them now,” Loore said nodding to the men who had been captured; the men that had attempted to enslave her. Caerdrans. It was then that Loore’s eyes had caught something in the distance and a single brow lifted in curiosity. They were being followed.

Loore watched as another man emerged from the tent, her gaze being drawn towards it when Kangee has spoken. The two men highly resembled each other and the hunter knew they were related.

“Kangee is good teacher,” the woman said with a small smile and stepped away from Kangee. Loore came to stand before Aleho and greeted him in the traditional way for an Osrinarian chieftain. A kiss was placed on each of his cheeks, chaste and respectful, but Loore retreated from the man.

“Loore Sa’thor,” the Osrinarian said before gesturing to Kangee. “I am debt to your brother. He saved me from stone city men. He killed one in honor.”

They spoke many words to each other which Loore did not understand. She could catch a phrase here or there, but as a whole, the woman was left without knowledge of the discussion. Her mind wandered back onto the one whom was following the hunters. Golden eyes sought out the figure and found him closer than before.

Ta’ar picked up the tenseness which was running through Loore and stood up after having laid down for the children. A girl of very young years giggled and slid down the shadowstalker.

“Aresak,” Loore said to herself before walking away from Kangee and Aleho. The great feline followed after and soon passed Loore. The pace of the cat sped up and all too soon it was running for Kyal. Ta’ar would soon be upon him with teeth bared and a growl in its deep throat, if Kyal did not run faster than the cat.

The hackles on Ta’ar’s back rose and it crouched before the unknown man with his long fangs still bared. It was only standing still due to Loore’s command, who was now approaching Kyal. The woman stood before him and dared not to come closer at that moment.

“Why do you follow,” she asked with a small tilt of her head. Loore waited for his answer before hearing footsteps behind her approaching as well. It was noticed that the man did not raise his hands in pretense of a fight. He had surrendered when Ta’ar had come after him. Loore could not help but to think the man wise and knew that he valued his life.

“You come closer,” Loore demanded, still watching every move he made.

Ta'ar was displeased and now pacing back and forth. There was a scent on the winds which his keen nose had caught wind of. The giant shadowstalker began to pant and hiss toward the wood. Watching him and removing her eyes from the unknown man—Kyal—made Loore frown. Grabbing a handful of the beast's fur, Loore swung her leg over his back and sat on Ta'ar.

"This foe will be great. I fear many death to come soon," the foreign woman stated with sternness in her voice. Kyal no longer became her concern. There was a greater event about to take place other than a spy trailing Kangee and his people. The woman looked to Kangee and asked, "You have weapons? I need weapon to defend if this is a—" Loore's words were cut off as a roar cut across the air, shaking the very foundations of the earth itself.

Loore had felt her heart leap up into her throat and a cry lingered on the edge of her lips. And yet, it was not loosed into the air. The woman’s liquid eyes grew wide but for a moment. The Osrinarian’s gaze hardened and narrowed in challenge of the beast.

“Shieraki gori ha yearn!” Loore’s voice called out in a battle cry as if she feared not the beast before her. The markings along her shoulder in the likeness of Ta’ar—the shadowstalker Loore sat upon—began to glow and shimmer along the woman’s skin. The pupils of Loore’s eyes became like slits and narrowed blade thin.

His Sight had become her Sight. His Breath had become her Breath. His Sound was her Sound.

Ta’ar and Loore had become one in two bodies. The foreign woman’s hands clutched at the fur of the beast beneath her, and Ta’ar release a long, low, and throaty roar to match the dragon’s.

Wheeling around, Loore forced Ta’ar into a run and she felt in her legs the strength of the shadowstalker’s own. Their eyes met Kangee and Loore steered Ta’ar toward him. Claws dug into the earth, rending it to shreds beneath Ta’ar’s feet. The creature’s speed was impressive and every muscle that clung to its bones rippled beneath his fur.

It was no small wonder how the Osrinarians had been fabled to be fierce in battle, or how men would flee before their very presence. Loore was a match for the dragon’s fierceness but she knew that this day would not come to battle.

Her hand reached out for Kangee’s and if he took hold of it, Loore would take the man to safety or he would be left behind to perish along with all the others

Loore urged speed into Ta’ar’s legs and lent him as much of her own as the woman could. A cry tore from the shadowstalker’s maw and from Loore’s own mouth as a sharpened stick struck into the soft pads of the beast’s paw. The Osrinarian slumped forward and held her hand close to her breast. While there was no injury to her flesh, Loore could still feel the agony of her bonded.

“Graddakh,” Loore muttered beneath her breath as tears sprung up from her eyes. Ta’ar could no longer run and was leaving a trail of bloodied prints in his wake. The beast stopped while ash floated through the air like flakes of black snow. When Ta’ar finally came to a rest, Loore dismounted him and motioned for Kangee to do the same.

Relieved of his burden, Ta’ar moved to a broken tree and sat down on his haunches to lick at his front paw. Loore was holding her hand as well while she paced around. Passing Kangee a third time, the wild woman stopped and looked at him before taking his face into her hands.

“Mori drivolat zhavvorsa,” Loore said in a rough but hushed voice. Her eyes were sad for him as Kangee had been left to witness the entire slaughter of his family, friends, and his people. The dragon’s ashes continued to float through the air and landed in Loore’s hair and on her cheeks.

“Shierak jadat save,” the woman stated in her foreign tongue before speaking in Kangee’s own, “You live. No forget, Kangee. No forget.” Loore’s eyes wandered over his face as her fingers slipped down from his cheeks. Her gaze swept over his chest then his arms and her hands found his. She looked for injury and when Loore saw that Kangee was well, she released his hands.

“Come, we move. Fast,” Loore said before starting off through the forest with quick eyes taking in every detail of their surroundings. That was how she found the man from before; the one who had stalked them since Loore had been rescued by Kangee from the Caerdrans.

Ta’ar gave him a warning growl as the beast followed Loore faithfully, limping with each step taken by his front-right paw.

A wave of concern washed over Loore as she watched Kangee speak to the unknown man who was holding a curious stone. It reminded her of the giant eggs in Osrinar from the great reptile beasts that roamed the land. Her eyes studied it for only a moment longer before she nodded.

“You come,” the foreign woman stated, approving of Kyal’s involvement with traveling in a group together. Looking again to Kangee, the woman took a step toward him. Loore pressed a gentle kiss to the corner of his mouth in the hope that he would find comfort in it. It was a chaste touch that lasted for only a second in time.

Giving one last look at their new addition, the woman spoke to Ta’ar in her exotic tongue and the beast responded by following after Loore when she began to lead them all away. They were to head toward the coast where smaller tribes of people made their home. Ta’ar needed his paw mended before Loore made her way back to Osrinar.
