Their Story Goes Something Like This. No one really knows where Ebony came from. As a child she was raised in a small town on the Mexican border, near Texas. As a result she speaks fluent Spanish and often talks in it. The old woman who found her as a child and raised her, whom Ebony called Abuela, knew the girl was different. Though other villagers called her diablo chica, the woman took care of her as best she could, homeschooling the erratic wall-climber until she was about ten years old. By then the entire village refused to speak to either of them, and it was hard for them to get food or clothes at the market. The woman thought things would be better for the girl and herself if she sent Ebony to the States with her elder sister. She sent Ebony over with her small reserve of money. However, tragically, as Ebony was crossing the border, Abuela’s sister died of a heart attack. Becoming quickly lost and not wanting to go back to Abuela, for Ebony knew the pain she caused her, Ebony set off as a street performer in Las Vegas. She kept her tail hidden, hoping to be seen as a simple contortionist. She fell in with some wrong crowds, some who tried to use her 'freak' attributes to their advantage. Desperate to escape the pressure of debts, drugs, men and theft, she hitch hiked out of town and stumbled upon the Traveling Zoo. Though they seemed a bit strange, Ebony was lured in at the pretense of being accepted. Though everything in the Zoo isn’t exactly perfect, she finds it better than Las Vegas, as long as she gets to perform for people. .
Even If They Are Freaks, They Have Personalities... Ebony’s a happy-go-lucky practical joker and teaser, basically making the most out of everything, despite being displayed in a zoo. She’s overjoyed when she can be with any of the other ‘freaks’ and gets quite down when she’s stuck in her ‘showcase cage’ with no company. Unless someones watching her. Of course she amuses herself with visitors, but she’s not one of the popular ‘attractions’. Ebony can usually take whatever is handed to her with optimism, and though she and the others don’t exactly live first class, she figures it’s better than her other life. She sometimes gets herself injured with her carelessness in climbing as she never expects to fall. Ebony is a daydreamer, and is very spacey. .
Wait! One More Thing! Though ‘Jetta’ seems interesting at first glance, with her tail and blue tinged pale skin, her ‘exhibit’ doesn’t get much attention as all she does is bend, dance and climb, and it makes her sad as she thinks no one likes her. She gets along well enough with the others but doesn’t know anyone all that well. Ebony also speaks fluent Spanish..
Moving on to our next freak...
Writing Sample? Ebony stumbled out of the rusty pickup, rubbing sleep from her eyes and ignoring the pins and needles coming from near her tailbone. Keeping her tail curled up for hours like she had was not ideal at all. She turned, shaggy black hair swinging with her, and walked lightly around the front of the truck where her driver was filling gas into his truck.
“Gracias…for the ride, I really appreciate it!”
She tried to keep her voice grateful, as she was.
“You’re dropping out here? Let me at least take you to the next city.”
She shook her head at the tan man in a ball cap, taking a few steps back and glancing around. They had stopped at a little run down gas stop, empty except a small car parked next to the building that was missing part of its door.
“Estoy bien aquí... Here is okay.”
He gave her a dubious look but didn’t complain. He raised a hand to point off the dirt road into the trees.
“If you follow the road up a little, then take a little side path, there’s a little hunting town that might be able to help you up it a little ways.”
“Gracias!”
Ebony immediately set off up the road, figuring the town was her best bet. She wasn’t ready to hit a city just yet.
A few moments later she was stumbling down a barely visible forest path, hopelessly turned around.
Ebony let out a loud sigh, breathing in the musky scent of pine cones.
Now she was lost. Great.
After nearly an hour of blundering through the woods, she came upon a small clearing…
Filled with what looked almost like Zoo cages. Surprised and worried she had stumbled upon something you had to pay to get into, ebony turned away and nearly ran into a man in a shabby suit.
“Hello, hello!” He chortled with a grin that unsettled Ebony.
“¿Quién eres tú ... ¿Qué es esto ... zoológico?” She asked in Spanish, hoping a foreign language would discourage the strange man.
“Who am I? I’m what you could call a worker here I suppose. And yes, this is a Zoo but not just a normal zoo… You look special yourself, like you belong.”
Ebony thought about her appearance, a bit put off that he fluently understood her.
She was tall at 5’ 8” with a thin willowy form weighing only 100 pounds. Her hair was jet black and hung to her mid back. Her hands and feet were large and adhesive, and could stick to things, allowing her to easily climb sheer walls and upside down, but she didn’t think that was visible. Then there was her skin, extremely pale and tinged blue. Her eyes were a stony blackish grey. She wondered if her tail was showing from her shorts, which matched her skin tone, long with a devils point at the tip.
“¿Qué quiere decir especial?”
“I mean special, like a ‘mutation’. Like you have. Though, here those so called mutations are cherished and praised. You’d fit in nicely.”
He reached out and twirled a lock of Ebony’s stark black hair. She twitched back a bit.
“We would call you Jetta.”
“¿Perdón?”
“Jet, adjective, a deep black. Turned feminine. You like? It’d be your stage name. You’d be accepted, Jetta. Preform and live with those like you.”
Ebony took a step back and examined the ‘zoo’. There seemed to be other people. It couldn’t hurt. If it was some kind of slave drive or sex zoo of some sort, she’d just use her talents and leave.
“Maybe you could tell me exactly what kind of place this is, sir.”
“I’d love to.”
