I'm sure 'Freak' is exaggerating...

Description

My Name Is Rosa Evangeline.

I Am Twenty One Years Old.
I Am A
Female.
I Came Here Because I am an audience member who wishes to find out more about these...people..
What Am I Like? Well... I guess you could say I'm a bit of a hippie. I tend to believe everyone is equal, no matter what age, race or creed, or what happened in the past. Hell, if it's in the past, it sticks in the past. I'm a vegetarian who likes the smell of the country air, starry skies and rainy days. I also like hot beverages and chocolate. I also find a love for animals and the extraordinary. I dislike when people tend to be abusive towards something different, and can't stand loud-mouthed people. Sure, I'm a little shy, but towards people who are different, I tend to not really hold back. Oh, I forgot to mention. It's quite hard to have a standard conversation with me, I'm deaf. I can lip-read, and I can sign things, but is it a little bit of a struggle sometimes. My voice doesn't tend to be slurred as I learnt to speak before my hearing was no more. I have an irrational fear of heights and if I get confused or scared, I'll quite often freeze up, unable to move and I'll feel like I'm about to throw up. I try not to judge others, but those who are mean, I tend to judge as being rude or quite evil..
My Life Has Been Interesting. This is How it Went I'd always worked down on the farm back home with ma and pop. We ran a quaint little place, with a place to stay for people passing by. My childhood was a good one, and it's something I wouldn't change for the world. However, I just wish it had lasted longer than it did. By the time I had reached about 16, my ma and pop had a big break up and things took a turn for the worst. My pop moved to the big city, and I stayed with ma on the farm. But, soon things went downhill, and we had to sell our animals. Ma fell ill, and by the time I was 18, she died.

I soon moved to join pop in the city, and boy is it a different place indeed. I learnt about the different problems of the world that I was concealed from before. I very often listened to news reports, looked up scandals on my laptop and other things such as that. One day in the city, I was walking to school, crossing a busy road and tripping over in the street. Just as I was about to stand up, my head peered just over the car and the horn of the car blasted into my ears. I was escorted to the hospital and couldn't hear a thing. Life had really changed from that humble little farm. For about a year until I was almost 20, I was stuck learning to live with being deaf, pop helped a lot, but it was also something I had to learn on my own quite a bit. I use these reports to look at and see what these other people are like. I feel sorry for them, but it's the only thing that reminds me that I'm not worse off. Don't ever get me wrong, I still know that my life is pretty good. I wouldn't change my life at all, but my intentions now in life are to try and improve others, even if I can't improve myself.
.
Wait! One More Thing! I'm sorry if I get in the way, I don't mean to, but I just feel like I could help sometimes... Also, I ride a shiny red motor scooter to get about. Just saying.

Writing Sample?

Freaks, Freaks, and more freaks! Roll up, roll up to the most exclusive zoo in town!

Her eyes drifted over the bold letters and the specifically coloured writing of the leaflet, eyebrow raised and a small thoughtful pout rested upon her pink lips. Freaks... Surely that's exaggerating, at least a little... Her eyes scanned the newspaper article and she finished it quickly, biting her lip. This sounded cruel. Or... interesting. People who were different, all gathered in one area for the public eye to see, to be exposed and put down for having something unseen and different. She frowned a little, flame red hair slipping into her eyes slightly as she looked up the destination and then picked up her handbag. Her dad must've known that she'd be interested in something like this. It was certainly unusual, something that caught her eye, and made her want to find out more. "I'm going out!" she yelled to her dad, unsure whether he responded or not, but knowing he wouldn't say much else than, "Okay, see you later, love you!" She walked to her motor scooter, flinging her keys in and starting it up before straightening out her flower patterned dress on her body and over the scooter. Soon she was zooming off, driving down the streets of the city and zig zagging between cars.

Let's see how freaky these people are...

So begins...

*CRACK!*

Hmm, well that didn't look too good... Rosa frowned at the ominous black cloud of smoke that erupted from the back of her motor scooter when it came to a stop in the parking lot. She pressed her hand against the scooter, just where the engine was and felt vibrations where the cracking was happening. Giving it a small whack, it stopped vibrating, and cracking. "There we go." She said to herself with a small smile, pulling out her keys and shoving them within her bag before heading towards the gate entrance, trailing along behind the snails that filled up the queue for the entrance. She absentmindedly looked at everyone around her, their lips moving vigarously as if they had to speak loudly over the noise around them. Still, it was peacefully silent for her, and she wore a content smile as she purchased a ticket and walked towards the entrance of the 'zoo'.

The man that was greeting people as they entered, 'The Owner' his lips moved widely and the expression he pulled was like he was yelling loudly, and yet he had a smile on his face still. She smiled at him slightly, though she tilted her head. Something about him rose suspicion's in her head, but she simply ignored it, grabbing a map of the zoo and then reading it a moment, before looking up and around at the 'freaks'. She wandered if any of them would speak to her. Their expressions all looked vaguely miserable. At first glance, no of course they didn't, but there were quite a few who had somewhat of a sour look in their eyes. She could only imagine that they were thinking 'I hate my life'.

Herrick Mederionos

With the Zoo open, Zero stayed to himself. As usual, many gave his cage a glance and then hurried right on by. Herrick even had his eyes closed during their escapes, which simply confirmed his fears: He was too scary for most, or not scary enough. It was depressing really that he could be both and yet neither at the same time, almost like a paradox. He sat in the middle of his cage, his head slouching down slightly so that his hat covered his face. The scorpion tail attached to him was as defient as ever, poised above his head. Zero had always thought that the thing had a mind of its own, never resting and always keeping watch for onlookers that got too close. To Herrick, that seemed to be one of the reasons why most people just ran on by - who wanted to get near a thing that could kill you without looking?

It was as if the tail had eyes. How childish.

Zero's ears perked up to the noise of the people as they entered. Their heavy footsteps, Jack using his fake announcements, Lilith and Ara arguing about something. Zero wasn't sure how their relationship made sense: Constant bickering between each other, and they somehow stay stronger together? He hadn't read that anywhere, and Shakespeare was supposed to be brilliant with deep and developed characters. Zero made a mental note that 30 minutes after showtime, he would skim through all of his book collection to see if he could find evidence of such characters. Hopefully that would help him understand how Lilith and Ara worked. The problem was that he had already done that 3 times already... He knew that he had, but a fourth look over couldn't hurt.

He peered from under his hat to notice a girl. Roughly his age, red hair. Colourful and interesting clothing style. Piercings. She seemed to be noticing all the freaks, though he couldn't read what her facial expression was. Possibly she could tell how miserable some were? Zero hadn't a clue. All that he knew was that she seemed to be nice, but he didn't want to scare her off now.

Rosa blinked around the Zoo, frowning a little before noticing that someone was staring at her through the corner of her eye. She turned to her right, looking up to the mutation and looking his body over. The scorpion tail especially grabbed her attention and curiosity for abnormal and supernatural. She turned to him, smile slowly growing on her lips as she neared closer to the bars of his cage. "Hello." She said to the man, eyes drifting down from his tail and then to his eyes. Well, his hat. It was kinda hiding his eyes. She wrapped one hand around one of the bars and then simply leant against the cage. "Your tail is really amazing..." She told him, smiling curiously at him whilst trying to look at him from underneath his hat. The only thing she could really pick up was somewhat of a frown on his face, and it made her frown a little in return. "Do you mind me asking, why you have to be in a cage?" She asked carefully, wondering how someone could really be that dangerous that they had to be barred up like this. She blinked, before shaking her head. "No, oh, sorry, I shouldn't ask that first, should I?" wow, she was even failing at talking to people who weren't perfect today. "I'm Rosa. What's your name?"

Herrick blinked at the sudden attention he was getting from the girl. He hadn't expected her to notice him peering at her, yet she caught on to him in a flash. It amazed him how at times normal humans could be highly dense, yet at other times they could have the senses of a freak. The thought made him chuckle inside his mind a little: It was somewhat amusing to think that Jack was hunting for freaks, when some of the normal people were somewhat freakish themselves. Sure it wasn't obvious, but it was still there.

Hello. He blinked once again once the girl had spoken, but remained silent. She was leaning against his cage, a move that could have her killed if she was looking at one of his older comrades, or if his tail decided to have a little bit of target practice. Your tail is really amazing... That caught him off guard a little, and his body language showed it clearly. He, along with his tail, jerked back a little, confused as to why someone would compliment it. After many years, most comments about his tail included "What the-' profanities, the 'So, can you like kill people with that' obnoxious comments and the ever popular 'So are you supposed to be scary?' naive comments. Rarely - in fact, the recorded count was now at 8 because of her - had anyone thought of it as amazing. The lady suddenly frowned, noticing his straight face, and stated a very odd question.

Do you mind me asking, why you have to be in a cage? Zero didn't know what to say to that. He never questioned why he was in a cage, or how or when. He was simply IN the cage. No real point in asking that sort of question. And the lady seemed to realize it as well. No, oh, sorry, I shouldn't ask that first, should I? Zero made no response, but he gave a lighthearted smile in the absurdity of it all. She then asked a question only 2 other people that weren't freaks had asked him. I'm Rosa. What's your name?" Zero couldn't believe it. Somebody actually cared enough to know his name? He started stumbling over his massive memory bank as he instantly remembered her name for life. Her name is Rosa, and she is #2 to ask such a question. But should I give her my stage name or that other name that Jack said I was named? Really, I only know myself as Zero, but that may come off as weird, so I guess I'll go with both.

Zero paused, then lifted his head to finally show the lady what he really looked like: His pure white eyes stared at her, and his head cocked to the side a little. She was quite feminine, a definition of what most men would probably call pretty. He then sucked in a small breath, and spoke in his soft, sweet tenor, also keeping his tongue firmly in his mouth. Didn't need her freaked out by his third eye. "Herrick Mederionos is the name of this one. Stage name, Zero. Pleasure to meet you Miss Rosa." He gave a small smile, and noticed the lady behind her. He assumed that she was the new staff member that Jack had talked about 7 days ago. Jack never gave a name, which somewhat irritated Zero. The new staff lady seemed to also be in awe of his tail, which always seemed to be the focal point of onlookers. They never seemed to notice the protruding ankle talons - they resembled therapods actually - or his feet, hair or hands. The tail was all that seemed to matter.

Rosa smiled when Zero finally responded, though with such polite wording (well, the ones she could make out anyway) that she was astounded that he spoke with such high class. She laughed a little, before giving him a dainty smile, lifting up the tips of her dress and giving him a little curtsey. "Pleasure's all mine, Mister Herrick." she responded, tilting her head up to him and then standing upright and leaning into the bars again. She took a good look into his pure white eyes and her smile grew even more, especially when she managed to spot the small smile that finally snuck it's way onto his lips. "You know, you really are quite stylish." She commented, looking down at his clothes. "I mean, for a man in a cage, you wouldn't expect them to look that great in a suit." She hoped she could make him smile even more. She could tell by the facial expressions of people passing by that Herrick appeared to scare others, making her wonder just how lonely he must be. Kinda like how she felt when someone realised she was deaf and suddenly decided that trying to talk with a deaf person was possibly too much hassle. Her eyes drifted down to his lips as she awaited his response, still softly smiling at the man with a scorpion tail which swayed side to side.

Ah, so they have conversations with the visitors as well. She smiled, not being able to help herself as she watched the scene while the girl and the one int hec age exchanged words. Well, the visitors who are brave enough to close as close as I would. She paused, debating on whether it would be wise to allow the girl to be there so close to the cage than what the average one was comfortable with, but the male (as Avarella focused better, there was a male's suit being worn and other indications to help support her theory) didn't seem to be threatening her in any sorts of way. In fact, Avarella could've sympathized that he seemed relieved to be rid of the apparent loneliness that his cage seemed to emit from the appearance itself. Running her hands through her hair again, she murmured to herself, looking away from what seemed to be quite the intimate moment between the two, "Maybe I should come back later?"

Crossing and uncrossing her arms that seemed to done so on their own, she seriously considered her options. Looking around, there didn't seem to be many staff members anywhere present in this range of the premises, and she didn't want to leave should there be any case of an accident. It made her regret not coming by much earlier to check up on everyone before opening hours began, so she could at least be able to believe that she could trust all of the mutants (still working on that) here. Geesus, all of these moral conducts pulling at me.

"Should've asked about this during the apparent job interview." She ran through her hair again, sighing. There was a slightly tugging at her side, and looked down to see the pulling of a child, very young and asking for directions for the bathroom. Pulling it from memory as she could, Avarella told the girl the information and watched her run back to her mother (to what she could see, anyway) and then point in the direction she told her and began to run. Pulling her gaze back to the cage that she has been transfixed on for a while now, she gave in, and began walking past, unsure if she were to regret this decision. She quietly whispered to herself, "Okay, if she gets hurt by any means, I'll just be over by the next cage, and I'm sure that I can run fast enough. And Jack- ugh, The Owner, probably would've put some sort of glass in the cage so he wouldn't be sued for lawsuit should anyone get hurt if the guy there was really dangerous, right?" Avarella reminded herself that this was the man who she had been arguing with over how the state of the cages were in the first place. She stopped in her steps. "Goddamnnit."

Turning herself around, she slowed down as she walked back to that cage, and cautiously entered into the hearing range of their conversation, slightly tapping the girl's - a redhead, huh? It was a sorts of reddish brown. - shoulder to gain her attention. "Hi. Uh. I'm .." She begrudgingly said the title that she never felt comfortable saying, "Dr. Avarella Lee. I was hoping to.. inquire about your close proximity with the, uh," she struggled to find the correct word that she could feel comfortable saying, "exhibit?" She cringed a bit. "I'm unsure as to what the protocol is around here, but I must ask you to please step back a bit as.. The Owner may not appreciate your'l being there." She shrugged. "I suppose." She knew to even to her own ears that she seemed unsure as to how to approach her tone as she struggled through speaking to the girl, her accent coming back in within the last words it slurred up a word here or there. I hate this professionalism. Not much use when you've got a stupid employee card clipped to your person. Avarella reminded herself to get herself a damn script next time, seeing as professionalism made her clamp up in entire nervousness. A good main reason why she didn't pursue this job immediately after graduation. Her cheeks burned, just a little.

Rosa turned when she was tapped on the shoulder, looking round to the woman with a slightly confused look as she attempted to read her lips. It was pretty hard though. Her words consisted of lots of pauses, 'uhm's 'Ah's and such and it seemed as though she just couldn't collect up what the woman was saying. "I'm sorry, could you say it again, but a little clearer for me." she asked Avarella, frowning slightly. "I do appologise, I, uh... Read lips." she informed her, biting her lip as her grip loosened a little on the bars.

She always felt like she needed to tell people if she couldn't understand them about her problem, purely because she was told by one person that "Deaf people need to have a sign attatched." then again, she'd always been pretty embaressed about her faults. Purely because it needed more attention than other things. And attention was the last thing she wanted. She glanced back to Herrick, looking down his body towards his feet and smiling when she saw the spikes at his ankles. She grinned, wishing she could touch them but looking to Avarella's lips to see her response.

Pleasure's all mine, Mister Herrick." She leaned farther into his cage, something somebody hadn't done for about 4 months and 13 days. That last person accidentally thought his tail was cool, and it didn't like that. But she seemed particularly calm about him, so he did too. You know, you really are quite stylish. I mean, for a man in a cage, you wouldn't expect them to look that great in a suit." Herrick blushed a colour red that he didn't know existed. Sure, he had been complimented on small things, such as his suit, but never like this. He was at a complete loss for words at the compliment, and he didn't know what to do about his now red face - it almost matched her hair colour.

Zero noticed the other lady that had been in awe of his tail walk up to Miss Rosa and say the most bizarre thing yet. Hi. Uh. I'm ..Dr. Avarella Lee. I was hoping to.. inquire about your close proximity with the, uh, exhibit?" Zero started chuckling at her speech, and as she spoke it slowly got louder. "I'm unsure as to what the protocol is around here, but I must ask you to please step back a bit as.. The Owner may not appreciate your being there." She shrugged. "I suppose." Zero couldn't stop himself, the entire question and statement, along with the Dr. Avarella's embarrassment was all too amusing. It wasn't a rude laugh, just one of actual enjoyment.

When he slowly controlled himself, he noticed that Rosa didn't seem to hear his laugh as he turned away and then he heard the statement to clear up everything I do apologize, I, uh... Read lips Zero's white eyes widened in understanding, finally figuring out why she was staring at his mouth the entire time he had spoken. Probably not a good idea to tell her that he had mouths on his hands - he remembered reading that humans couldn't focus on more than 1 thing at once. When she turned back to him, she noticed the talons in his heels - he couldn't wear his shoes because of them, unless they had holes in the back - and smiled. Zero couldn't understand why she was so facinated with him, it made no sense.

But so that the new Doctor could understand his situation, he turned to Avarella. "Do not worry, Miss Avarella. I stopped being dangerous roughly 5 years and 295 days ago." He gave a small smile, and then continued to speak. For her, his voice would sound like a tenor, but since his eye acted like a tongue ring, his talking had the same oddity as it did if he had one. "You are already introduced, so it is my turn. Herrick Mederionos. Most remember me as Zero." He tipped his hat a little while still sitting cross legged. "You are the new doctor Jack spoke of? Then I shall have to show you my differences to humanity." And with that, he simply stuck out his tongue to reveal his third eye. Unlike most people who didn't have another eye, his actually worked - he just kept it shut. His third eye is actually better for night vision, and can only be used if another eye is shut while its open. Otherwise, if all three are open, his eyesight goes blurry.

Rosa looked back to Herrick as he began talking to the other woman, by the looks of her name tag, she worked there, but she didn't know quite for sure. However, when Herrick revealed his third eye, it appeared that she became distracted. "W-wow..." she murmured with a giant grin lighting up her face. She leant into the bars again, "That's really... Wow." she laughed at her own lack in vocabulary, though her eyes remained glued to the eyeball within His tongue, unable to pull her eyes away.

Rosa unconsciously snaked one hand around one of the bars again, her eyes moving from the third eye, back up to Herrick's face, her smile never seeming to fade. "You really are amazing... But..." she trailed off a little, leaning against the cage slightly. "I can't help but get the feeling that you're not used to human interaction." she said, tilting her head at him with a slightly raised, questioning eyebrow that went beneath her messy red fringe. "You look very thoughtful about every single word someone else says, as if every word matters..." she smiled at him. "Don't get me wrong, knowing that you're listening at all times is really great to hear." As ironic as I sounded... "But... I'm just wondering. You looked really quite sad when people walked past you, only managing to spare a glance." she frowned a little at him. "It must be rough."

Oh. ... Oh. She read lips? "My apologies, again." She cleared her throat, forming her a thought process as she improvised on her apparent script again. This was definitely not working out for her, this professionalism. "I was concerned.. I mean, sort of worried there over how close you are to the cage here." To hell with professionalism. Avarella's attention was slightly distracted by the amusement that the man behind the bars in front of them seemed, but she focused on the red haired girl. She seemed slight nervous over revealing the bit of information to her, and Avarella became just a tad more embarrassed, if not more than she's ever been in her life.

She turned towards the cage as he introduced himself and quickly explained the situation - Herrick he said his name was, right? - with a sort of odd tone in his voice, and she carefully noted the 5 years, 290 days bit to herself, the passing thought of He keeps track? gone with the wind as she generally took in his appearance, much more so as Avarella quietly listened, more or less surprised that he knew of her presence and being on the job already (Well that saves some introductory embarrassments.) and caught completely by attention as he proceeded to show her the eye on his tongue. She wasn't sure as to what to say to that, her mind trying to process this all together as scattered thoughts formed in her mind, Well, this certainly beats everything that I've been through here in the States and Swallowing and tasting must some sight to wonder about. "Woah."

Avarella couldn't say anything, and turned her attention towards Rosa, who seemed much more utterly fascinated towards Herrick in such a.. non-negative sort of way. The blonde wasn't sure how to describe it. She didn't say anything as Rosa spoke quite softly yet so casually. Concerned. That was at least one way to look at it. With a sheepish smile of her own and feeling quite out of place, she looked towards Herrick, speaking quietly, ".. I should go, and uh, let you two to be." Her sight switched between focusing on either of the two slowly, trying to understand what to make out the situation here. "I could come back to see what other features you may have that I should be aware of, so you could talk to your.. uhm, lady friend?" God, she hasn't been this awkward since she was an early teenager, and even then she wasn't as much of a sore thumb as she was currently being right now. "Since the situation's all fine and dandy and all of that."

Herrick was again confused as he withdrew his tongue back into his mouth. Once again, Miss Rosa was not only in shock by one of his abnormalities, but in awe. Most humans went running when he showed his tongue, and yet this girl who could not hear a word he was actually saying quite enjoyed his act. One hadn't enjoyed his actual act since the day before he stopped being dangerous: 5 years, 296 days ago. Zero could remember it quite well, for it was the day before the last of the true veterans - aka one of the guys he grew up with, codenamed Maximilien - committed suicide. It was a sad day for most of the freaks, since Maximilien was well loved by most. Who didn't love a guy with the powers of a chameleon?

Zero brought himself back out of his memories - which were probably the most dangerous thing to him - when Rosa said something quite peculiar. You really are amazing... But...I can't help but get the feeling that you're not used to human interaction." Herrick was taken aback by this statement, but merely stated nothing. He knew she was right - he hadn't had a conversation this lengthy since the man that gave him his tie - One couldn't really call that a conversation much either. "You look very thoughtful about every single word someone else says, as if every word matters..." It truly does Miss Rosa - you have no idea. His thought to himself, sorrow streaking his eyes for longer than he would like to admit. Don't get me wrong, knowing that you're listening at all times is really great to hear. But... I'm just wondering. You looked really quite sad when people walked past you, only managing to spare a glance. It must be rough." Her frown that she gave was quite cute for a human, and he gave a sad smile to her before stating. "Truly you have spoken the truth Miss." That was all he had to say, for it answered most of her questions and simply got his point across.

When he turned back to Dr. Avarella, she seemed to be feeling very awkward and out-of-place, as if she was intruding on something. I should go, and uh, let you two to be. I could come back to see what other features you may have that I should be aware of, so you could talk to your.. uhm, lady friend? Since the situation's all fine and dandy and all of that." Zero raised an eyebrow at the new Doctor, while his cheeks did flush pink. His normal skin tone had returned to his face by now after turning a shade of red, but the pink hadn't left his cheeks. "Interesting how you would simply trust my word, Dr. Avarella." Trust wasn't something he was entirely used to, for it was usually the first of many morals to be lost in the zoo. His completely white eyes stared at her for a second, and he only muttered a quick "I shall show you the rest now." before raising both of his hands to show the mouths on each one. This was usually the part where the crowd either threw up or ran screaming, since they looked exactly like a mouth up until the point that they weren't on a face. They couldn't speak, nor could they really eat anything, but they were good for storing little objects if he had any - no gag reflexes.

Rosa gave him a sympathetic look when he gave her the sad smile and sighed gently. She didn't quite catch what Herrick had said to Dr. Aravella though tilted her head curiously when he raised up his hands. She blinked a couple of times, until she noticed the movement of mouth-like reflex's on his otherwise clean hands. She tilted her head at the hands, blinking a couple of times before a confused and somewhat nervous look appeared on her face as she tried to trace any speech coming from the two small mouths. Her eyes began to quickly flicker between the two lips on his hands, trying to catch anything, but also glancing to Herrick's other pair of lips, and also Doctor Avarella's lips incase she was saying anything in her direction. She was soon nervously flickering about 4 pairs of lips, biting her lip and worrying slightly.Too many lips... Too much... She soon just crammed her eyes shut, allowing her mind to calm down and stop trying to take in everything at once. She worked so hard to try and keep track with things as much as she could, but often in public places with large groups of people, she'd be the one getting lost. The one not being able to keep up, and being quiet. Just tagging along and just being... well, the freak.

After her mind cleared, she slowly opened her eyes and looked back to his hands, tilting her head as she wasn't able to read them again and then instead of getting worked up, she ended up just turning her eyes back to the lips on Herrick's face. "They're not saying anything, are they?" She asked shyly, blinking a couple of times. The only reason she would often get nervous with reading lips was because she felt like if she couldn't understand everything, then she'd disappoint. And disappointing someone was worse than saying anything at all. Well, that was what she believed anyway. "I... couldn't keep up with them, I'm sorry."

She gave a small frown and perhaps pouted her lips upward in slight confusion. Why would it be interesting that I trust his word? He hasn't hurt her, so why fear? Avarella blinked, her pout dropping and her brow smoothing out to a more neutral position. Her eyes traced to its corners where some spectators seem to be watching cautiously, but turned her head back forward quickly, hands easily finding the pockets at the side of her thighs. Her brow couldn't help but quirk up a bit, and other joined as he insisted - at least, from what she thought that she heard - as he showed her his hands. Avarella failed to see why, until her eyes focused on just what was on his hands. Mouths. On each one. By dear god that's just.. She blinked multiple times, and leaned closer, staring at it as she processed this bit of information further. Her own hand slipped out from its pocket and slowly reached out towards it without even thinking. ".. Goddamn cool." She whispered, ending her train of thought in words, slightly entranced by it. It reminded her of that one cartoon where it had that character with hands on their hands, though she had trouble remembering what that was. She's met quite a few people who had to explain to her that the cartoon was something like a .. Annie? Whatever. Cartoons were cartoons to her either way.

She couldn't help the suddenness of her gut dropping as soon as she saw the hands, but she'd be lying if she couldn't help but admit that this was cool and incredibly unheard of to her at the same time. Her fingers were slightly reaching towards it, but she stopped mid air as if in a pause. Avarella was tempted to ask if he could lick anything, or rather, taste anything with those hands. Sneaking food would be fabulous, if he could eat from those hands. .. But he'd need something to connect that with his stomach. She frowned, seriously thinking hard on the matter. Wouldn't he? She couldn't help but just stare, her mind on a roll with countless questions that she could ask without being too rude.

Though, her head stopped when the red-haired girl spoke, her voice easily catching her attention from her own long silence. Turning her eyes towards her and then leaning back, an apologetic look on her expression for staring for so long. Though, it would seem the young girl was much more nervous than she was, and Avarella couldn't help but feel concerned. "What-"

Her attention was quickly diverted when there seemed to be some sort of a commotion that was rising about behind her, some distances away from where this cage stood. There were a few shouts going around, and she frowned further. Struggling to listen properly, she stilled, and heard some flashes of What's wrong? or Hey! She just fell! or Get up!. It was faint, and she pieced whatever it was that seemed to make sense to her, seeing as it seemed to repeat itself like an echo. Though, seeing as the context seemed to be of great concern, she turned her worried look towards the two in her company. "I-I'm sorry, but I think that I may have to go." Aren't they surrounding Ebony's cage? She visibly tensed, a bit more anxious. Did something happen? "There's seems to be a sort of commotion by Ebony's cage," she kept switching her glances between the crowd and Herrick's cage, unsure as to what to do. "I-I will be right back. I'm sorry. There might be.. " She quickly ran before hearing either of the two's responses. "Really sorry!" She yelled over her shoulder, though her legs kept running. It took her some minutes to try to see what was wrong. There was probably a cagekeeper in the front, and she quickly maneuvered through the crowd, excusing her way through. There was a decent amount of a crowd, though she suspected that it was for the wrong reasons. Avarella caught some snippets of oh, she fell or something along those lines, and as she got the front, yelling louder as she kept excusing herself through, she got the front, and try to process just what is happening currently. "What's going on?"

Herrick knew he shouldn't have done that. He should have connected the fact that a lip-reader would get extremely taxed by seeing more than one mouth on a person, and eventually freak out a little. However, Zero's mind had yet to calculate this possibility, for he had yet to truly meet any person that was actually deaf, or could read lips. He rarely got visitors as it was, let alone deaf ones. Noticing that her head was spinning, a look of remorse and regret flooded his mind and facial expression. He instantly chastised himself mentally, knowing that he should have thought that one through more carefully and meticulously. Doctor Avarella, on the other hand, seemed to be entranced by his hands, leaning into his cage as if to touch them out of awe. Her eyes, on the other hand, confused him - a mix of mystified and entranced. She whispered something about how 'Goddamned cool' his hands were, to which Zero promptly made a mental note to look up the origins of this 'goddamned cool' saying, and to figure out what that trance-like look in her eyes was.

They're not saying anything, are they? I... couldn't keep up with them, I'm sorry. Those words seemed to crumble the silence that had been created, to which Herrick quickly put his hands down and Avarella seemed to retreat. Herrick turned to face Rosa, a remorseful expression clear. "My deepest apologies Miss, I... wasn't thinking entirely. No, they are not capable of speech, nor digestion. They can taste, but that is all." Herrick dipped his head apologetically. Avarella, although concerned, had her attention diverted to a crowd that was growing near Ebony's cage to which she gave her apologies and ran off. Herrick made no motion to stop her, nor did he do anything besides sit cross legged. From his vantage point he could see Ebony - or Jetta, he called her both. She was quite a nice and optimistic character, one that Zero wished he would talk to more often. Perhaps she would bring up his confidence with her enthusiasm.

That lead his eyesight to the cage nearest himself - Ridley's. Those pieces of Scum had once again come back to sexually assault the mutants again, and Herrick hated it. Normally, the quirkly fellow did absolutely nothing, for that was his nature, and that was how Jack wanted him to be. On occasion though, he had been known to scare them by simply sticking out his tongue, or even just by opening his eyes at them. The normally went around his cage that way and ended up with the twins, which was amusement enough. He turned back to Rosa and gave her a smile. "Miss, it isn't your fault. I am assuming the pressure of actually communicating got to me." He smiled - unbeknownst to him, quite sheepishly - and turned to hear Mr. Jack roaring at Ridley.

He turned his head and instantly narrowed his eyes at the situation. He was quite fond of Ridley - same reason as with Ebony, she seemed to be quite a nice person to befriend if he ever tried - and Jack wasn't in a good mood. Ridley was hiding from those Comic book lowlifes, whom instantly noticed him and scooted around his cage. He then heard Jack threaten her with that isolation chamber. Zero did not fear that room, for it did nothing to him at all - in fact, it made him feel a little more free. He shook that thought and stared back. He didn't like where this was going, but he couldn't get involved. That was simply out of the question.

"I-I didn't mean to make her go." Rosa stuttered out with a frown, watching the young doctor walk away towards another cage. She sighed gently, looking back to Herrick. Miss, it isn't your fault. I am assuming that the pressure of communication got to me. Rosa's nervous feelings declined a little, and she began to give him sympathetic looks. You and me both Herrick... she sighed gently, looking to the spikes on his feet absentmindedly. "Please, just call me Rosa..." Rosa noticed Herrick's eyes narrowed in the direction of another cage.

Rosa turned to look at The Owner, watching his actions and behaviour with consideration. She frowned slightly at him. He was the man who looked so friendly, and yet suspicious at the entrance. She had a hunch earlier, but the way he was threatening one of the people, it was so cruel, and completely contrasting to the chirpy excited personality he had put on earlier. "I thought that he didn't seem like the type to be so happy..." she commented to herself, leaning against the bars of the cage lightly. "No one keeping people in cages and making them perform routines would be calm and kind." she sighed, hoping the girl within the cage wouldn't get hurt.

Katerina sits in the corner of her cage, her blue cat eyes scanning the crowd outside the iron bars. She takes a breath, wondering how she got herself into this situation. Her tail twitches as she sees the eyes appearing outside her cage. Katerina breathes in a sigh as she stretches out, amusing the patrons she sees. She begins her acrobatics standing on her hands and walking forward, doing splits and balancing on one hand. Different things she could think of. But, of course, the crowd was distracted by her cat-like features. They always were. Why is it different now? Because she's in a cage? She chalks it up to that.

Pretty soon, Katerina hears a commotion outside her cage that isn't coming from the crowd. She carefully walks on all fours to the bars and peeks her head out as much as she can to see what was going on. She flicks her ears to hear the commotion better. She picks up on the conversation and her tail twitches as she hears it.
"Who are these people?" she thought. Being the newest member of the show, Katerina really didn't know the others. She had arrived, then when she agreed to stay, she was put in this cage. It wasn't until she felt a familiar sensation on her head that she was hit back into reality. A little boy stood in front of the cage stroking her head. He couldn't have been older than 5. Immediately, Katerina hisses to the boy, her nails extending in attempts to scratch him.

The boy screams and falls back, his mother catching him as he cries.
"What the hell is your problem you freak of nature?!" the mother screams.
"Maybe you should tell your spawn not to touch the performers!" Katerina hisses back, her back up like an angry feline, tail lashing back and forth.
The mother's eyes are filled with fiery anger, "How dare you speak to me that way!"
"How dare you speak to me that way!" Katerina glares at the woman in front of her.
The mother stands, helping her son up, "You WILL pay for this you realize. I will report you."
"Go ahead. As long as it gets me the hell away from you and that thing you call a child I'll be fine." Katerina goes back to her corner and curls up.
The boy and his mother walk off, mother seething with anger and giving one more yell before she leaves.

Herrick could tell that by Miss Rosa's constant apologies that she was a very sweet and caring lady, something that made him smile just a bit. However, his mind was focused on other things when she stated Please, just call me Rosa... to which he could only nod his understanding. He didn't want to get anymore involved than he should, for even if Zero had been around the longest of most, that didn't mean that Jack had grown soft for him or something. He would be punished the same, only he wouldn't feel it as much (been there long enough, pain just seems natural after a while).

I thought that he didn't seem like the type to be so happy... No one keeping people in cages and making them perform routines would be calm and kind." He simply nodded throughout her speech, hearing every word even if she meant to keep that to herself. "Right you are, Miss Rosa. His occupation is not one he does calmly." He stated simply, for there wasn't much to hide it. Jack thought that Ridley would ruin the show if she stayed up there, but from Herrick's simply observations, he could tell that the yelling he did on occasion would actually have a more negative effect on the onlookers. Nobody would want the Ringmaster yelling at his elephants during the circus.

Zero! Can you see what is going on with Ebony? Zero's head turned slowly and casually over to the other nearest cage, the Twins Ara and Lilith. Ara didn't seem like she was enjoying the fact that Ebony's cage wasn't in her vision, so he decided to enlighten her. "She fell. Dr. Avarella is investigating." He said in a quiet voice, hopefully loud enough for her to hear. But then Lilith noticed Ridley and Jack and started yelling profanities. Zero had to sigh at the sight, it truly was tiring and depressing. Lilith wasn't the happiest lady in the show, but that didn't mean she had to yell all the time...

Rosa flinched back quickly at the web suddenly covering the cage, blinking at it in dismay. Was it really possible that he was making a person so distressed that they'd react in such a manner? She couldn't see it as possible herself, but apparently it was. She frowned to herself, looking to The Owner and letting out a sigh. Whatever he was doing, he was doing something mean to these people, simply because they were different in a pretty spectacular way. Rosa bit her lip a little, her hand clenching the bar of the cage a little. Maybe she'd have to come and visit this zoo more, try and find out more about what this horrible man was doing and then report him to the authorities. "Hmm, but that could be trouble for everyone else in the zoo... So authorities is out..." Last thing she would want is to get these people in a worse situation. Imagine them getting dissected...

Rosa looked over to Herrick, biting her lip. "Are they going to be okay in there? He's not going to hurt them... is he?" Rosa asked with a frown, referring to Ridley even though she didn't know who it was in there. Rosa sighed gently, rolling her shoulders back. "I mean, has anyone tried to tell the cops about that guy yet, or will there need to be a first?" she asked, glancing to The Owner, and then back to Herrick.

Herrick was starting to get slightly agitated, and worked up - which slightly shocked him. The whole situation was spiraling out of control, something that Jack rarely let happen in the Zoo. Normally, he would simply accept the fact that the freak was being disobedient, and then beat them later. This was Jack when he was seriously angry about something. Zero should know, he had been documenting Jack since he was 5 years and 340 days old. However, these comic geeks must be extremely regular for Jack to side with them over one of his own. True, Jack usually didn't care much for them, but freaks were slowly becoming harder to get - at least, according to Zero. Most freaks that were showing up today were older than when Zero was their, when seeing 5-10 year olds was common. Nowadays, most of them are either older than 16, or not in the zoo.

Herrick turned to see that Rosa wasn't overly eccentric for the act either. In fact, she seemed rather horrified (if what his books told him to be true), with her muscles tense and her lip being bitten. She turned to him with a look of concern. "Are they going to be okay in there? He's not going to hurt them... is he? Herrick thought it best to not answer that, for he could not be certain. There were days when Jack was feeling generous and only beat them, and days when he through them into isolation for making a child cry. I mean, has anyone tried to tell the cops about that guy yet, or will there need to be a first? Herrick gave a puzzled look until he figured out the slang. I see, cops are the slang form of law enforcement... Herrick could only look at her with a sad and somber stare, and slowly shook his head.

"The law enforcement never seem to get entirely involved. Those who threaten with criminal punishment never go through with it, to my understanding." Herrick lowered his head, his mind starting to get worked up. Needless of his passive nature, he was highly defensive of the freaks in the zoo and the zoo itself. He knew that struggling through these forms of hardships either killed off the freaks, or let them stay around long enough to be killed off. A depressing life, but one that Zero only knew - without it, what was he? A mutation of a man that wouldn't dare leave his cage for too long. The correct term would be agoraphobia. Zero also connected with most of the freaks - the new ones who didn't understand anything, the middrifters who were trying to piece together their 'lives' and the veterans who were mostly depressed (and comprised of himself and a few others, namely Dawn).

Nevertheless, if things escalated, he may have to intervene - something he hadn't done in 4 years, 149 days. Roughly.

"The law enforcement never seem to get entirely involved. Those who threaten with criminal punishment never go through with it, to my understanding." Sounds about right... Rosa frowned at Herrick's pitiful yet angered look and wished she could just try to calm him in some way. She knew that the conditions he had were rough, but also had come to terms that there wasn't much she could do to stop it at any rate. Without thinking much about it, she reached in through the cage and gently wrapped her fingers around his hand. Well, as much as she could anyway. It was pretty hard to do, what with all the bars and metal in the way.

"Please don't work yourself up." Rosa said to him, frowning and stroking the back of his hand with her thumb. "And it's hard, I know. You want to help your friend, and that's really sweet. But if you get angry and do something you shouldn't, you'll just make things worse." She looked at their hands and sighed softly, before closing her eyes. "Calling in the authorities could cause more hassle for you guys." She looked up to him. "I don't want to try and put you in a worse situation than you already are in." she loosened her hand around his, knowing that human contact was different to him, and that holding his hand could be freaking him out a little bit. She kept her hand in there, but didn't hold his hand so tightly.

"Come on Froggy! We wanna see you jump!"

Tagonoly ignored the little boy stood outside his cage, teasing him and trying to reach in to feel his slimed skin and see what his webbed feet looked like. He was sat on a floating lily pad that was in the center of the small pool he had. He looked down at his reflection, mixed with the mossy green slime that floated on the surface of the water. Why was he here? He didn't need to be here... did he? No, he didn't. He wanted to go home. Home to where there was no bars and no restrictions.

"Come on froggy! Do a trick for us!"

"He's not doing anything."

"How stupid..."

"What a rip off!"

Tag sighed softly, jumping off of the lily pad into the water and swimming around below the surface, skin shining slightly in the water as he stayed under, feet sticking to the bottom of the pool as he breathed through his skin. He looked to the surface, watching the people outside the cage slowly make irritated expressions and then leave. Finally... He closed his eyes under the water and allowed some bubbles to escape his mouth. Some peace and quiet...

Something soft and warm touched his hand, and his reflexes were no where near fast enough to jolt out of the way. Instead, he looked down to see that Rosa's hand was grabbing his own. His eyes widened considerably, and like most times, Herrick was at a loss for words. Human contact - most contact for that matter - was something Herrick shied away from. He wasn't even sure if that was legal, but he didn't mind. The heat that her body radiated through her hand warmed his own hand, which resulted in a small smile on his lips. For a second, he forgot completely about the entire situation that was going on, as if his memory decided to take an unscheduled vacation. Instead, it came back quite quickly, deciding that it had been gone from Herrick's brain for far too long, and he looked back at the zoo while she spoke.

Please don't work yourself up." Herrick now just realized how pent up his frustration may have exceeded his mind and entered his face, and he didn't like that. He had been taught to keep himself to himself, and only let important things show, like fake amusement and acting emotions. Her thumb rubbed his hand slowly, and he could feel his face slowly melt away. Zero instantly made a mental note to investigate this odd grouping of feelings that he was having - hopefully one of his books could help. And it's hard, I know. You want to help your friend, and that's really sweet. But if you get angry and do something you shouldn't, you'll just make things worse." Zero wasn't sure if he could call Ridley one of those 'friends' that literature and others had always spoken of, but he did feel the need to make sure the zoo ran nicely, and his fellow freaks made it through the day. He looked at her, and her eyes had closed by this time. "Calling in the authorities could cause more hassle for you guys." He nodded while she looked up at him. I don't want to try and put you in a worse situation than you already are in."

Her hand loosened on his own, but didn't leave. He gave a smile to her, and spoke. "Very kind of you to think of us like that, Miss Rosa. Not many do." His smile got sad, before he turned back to the world. "You are also right, anger has yet to solve any of my problems. Solitude, on the contrary, has." He didn't look anywhere but straight ahead while he spoke. He could see a photographer arrive, with an accent that Herrick hadn't really heard before. Zero knew that those types - the 'journalists' as they called themselves - besides the 'creeps' were the worst form of customer. They usually asked profane and highly controversial questions, and wanted to drill into a freak's private life with one of those spinning drill things.

"Very kind of you to think of us like that, Miss Rosa. Not many do." This made Rosa frown again, and she looked sorrowful for him. It was a shame that many people judged them as animals. Either that or a pest to society, meaning they should actually be locked up in cages and such. She disagreed with it all. She disagreed with normal zoo's. But she was a hippie, she had an excuse... "You are also right, anger has yet to solve any of my problems. Solitude, on the contrary, has." Rosa tried not to disagree too much. It was true. Solitude could bring independence and help to make people more mature.

"But... too much solitude can damage someone too." Rosa responded eventually, frowning as she just watched his lips. Lips, she had found, most defined expressions. Although eyebrows may raise or lower, or eyes can tear up or widen, lips can smile, and frown, and pout, and smirk. Every thing can be more defined with lips, no matter what the expression. "If you're alone for too long, then you don't know how to act around others. Or, when other people speak, how to respond." She sighed gently. "You must've had a lot of solitude. It's probably come with this dark exoskeleton of a scorpion." She frowned a little, her hand still lightly holding his.

"It's just the same in the animal kingdom though... Even if it may feel like things are different here." Rosa's eyes gently lifted up towards the pincer on Zero's tail, noting how it seemed to move about to its own accord and do what it wished. "The scorpion would use it's tail to frighten predators as protection, helping to keep itself feared by those trying to kill it. It's for survival. Nothing more than something to threat with and defend itself with. However, since the pincer looks threatening most of the time, the crabs and other creatures like itself begins to fear the scorpion too, because it looks like it could attack at any moment. When deep down, the scorpion is just like most other creatures. Innocent and kind. Just... misinterpreted." She smiled sympathetically to him, her thumb rubbing the back of his hand again. She stared at him for a moment, smiling at him before she blinked a couple of times, stopping what she was doing and then letting her hand droop. "I...I-I'm sorry. I didn't mean to go into a whole... I'm sorry." She had just been talking and talking, not noticing that she had kept on going. She was mainly thinking out loud, but a whole description of the animal kingdom had come out. She had thought for a moment that he could be interested... Stop being so stupid... she thought to herself, looking down to her feet and then glancing to the web covered cage absent-mindedly. Anyone walking past probably thought she had come here just to have a little chat with the mutations. "I...If you want me to leave you now, I'll go and stop bothering you." She smiled gently to him, showing she wouldn't really mind if he did want her to leave him alone.

Instantly, Zero realized that she disagreed with his solitude comment, and he could guess where this conversation was going. Most of the originals had always talked about how they shouldn't be alone, and that Zero should always tell somebody if something was bothering him. However, as the originals began to disappear, so did his confidence to confide in others. But... too much solitude can damage someone too. "If you're alone for too long, then you don't know how to act around others. Or, when other people speak, how to respond." Her frowns intrigued him, and she sighed."You must've had a lot of solitude. It's probably come with this dark exoskeleton of a scorpion." Zero looked up at his tail, never really thinking that it was the problem. After thinking it over, what she did say made sense. However, a lot of people were simply scared of his eyes or hands, the tail (from what he could tell) was always just there to emphasis his oddness.

Rosa continued speaking, something that usually caused Zero to close up and not speak - he didn't always enjoy somebody that continued talking after their point was made. "It's just the same in the animal kingdom though... Even if it may feel like things are different here." Her eyes went to his tail, and continued. The scorpion would use it's tail to frighten predators as protection, helping to keep itself feared by those trying to kill it. Just... misinterpreted." Rosa seemed perfectly happy with what she was saying, while Zero was just trying to make sense of it all. It was truly astonishing what others could figure out for another, but Herrick still didn't really understand. Suddenly, the smile disappeared from her face and she dropped his hand.

"I...I-I'm sorry. I didn't mean to go into a whole... I'm sorry. I...If you want me to leave you now, I'll go and stop bothering you." Zero was completely confused. Is this how humans act? Finicky, presumptuous and apologetic? Zero was easily lost by her sudden switch to sadness, and he made that highly clear. "Miss Rosa, I do not understand your sudden apologies and behaviour. If I wanted you to leave, I would have stated so." He gave a small smile and reached for her hand. "While I do not entirely understand your reference, it is duly noted."

Rosa blinked at him a couple of times, before looking to his hand reaching out to hers. She tilted her head slightly, digesting what Herrick had just said.

"Miss Rosa, I do not understand your sudden apologies and behaviour. If I wanted you to leave, I would have stated so."

She found herself breaking into a smile and laughing a little under her breath. Though it soon turned into more of a giggle and she reached over, holding his hand again and then looking back up to him. She couldn't believe that someone would want her to stick around for more than a small talk conversation. That didn't happen often. She was more of a girl to get in a conversation, and then scare someone away because she didn't talk about things that other people would. She leant against the cage again, not caring if anyone was gazing at her and thinking her to be mad for holding hands with a mutant. Herrick wanted her to stay and talk, and she didn't want to leave his cage. He was taking to human contact better than she thought, and it made her grin from ear to ear. "While I do not entirely understand your reference, it is duly noted." she laughed a little at the comment and then shook her head. Yeah, no one does.

"Sorry about that. I like imagery and stuff. It's good in books, helps to get you to imagine something and picture it in your head." Rosa smiled at him gently, pushing her red hair out of her eyes with her free hand. She smiled at him, thinking to herself for a moment, before asking, "What kind of things do you do when the Zoo's closed? For fun I mean?" She tilted her head gently.

Sebastian

"Sorry to cut our conversation short, Sebastian. But, duty calls."
The photographer smiled back. "Of course. Expect to see me again sometime." He promised with a wink, and then the spider girl did a flip and shot a web, pulling herself to the ceiling.
Sebastian stuck around for awhile, capturing some shots of the girl in air doing tricks and listening as her song followed her movements, rising and falling, and sometimes adding a new instrument according to her movements.
After several failed attempts he even got a shot of her webbing, flinging towards a space on the wall. As the crowd began to thicken, Sebastian slipped away, never one for large amounts of people. After the beauty of Ridley's color and sound, a crowd seemed all the more messy.
He scanned the area once more, listening for anything that caught his attention. Once more he realized how unique and synchronized the entire zoo was in their music.
Maybe I should be a musician. I'd make a fortune if I could reproduce this sound. Then he laughed silently to himself and shook his head. Anyone else would simply find these sounds a clash of noise, not the beauty Sebastian saw.
Where to go, where to go?
The young adult began walking cage to cage again, coming across a man with a scorpion tail, holding the hand of a red haired girl. Sebastian smiled at the scene, angling his camera to capture the man in the cage and his small grin, their hands and the back of the girls head. They caused nothing but good music, and Sebastian quickly scuttled to the cage opposite before he could be a nuisance to them.
He glanced at the small plaque labeling Blueberry and Strawberry, before noticing the two girls, each glaring in the direction of the man Sebastian had scolded for his colors. Perhaps they weren't in the mood to humor his photography. He would try though, because the two girls were actually quite intriguing looking.
The the more blond one was covered in blue snakelike scales, while the more red haired one had patches of pink salamander-ish skin, and pink fins on her hands and feet.
While making his assessment of their appearance, some sort of electric-tribal music had started as a low drumming in his ears. The low electronic sounds stirring from the first girl kept time with the rhythmic drumming of the second girl. A rain stick startled Sebastian as he noticed they appeared to be conjoined at the hip.
He smiled. Everyone at this Zoo had such lovely sounds, he almost preferred it to regular people. Well, everyone except those two mean looking men, who, by how they were glaring, these two girls didn't like him either.
"Hello," He said, still smiling at their music. He didn't bother to conceal his French accent. Everyone seemed to notice it, even when he tried his best to get American pronunciation right, so why bother?
"I was wondering if I could take a few pictures of you. Si vous ne me dérange pas." He paused, quickly translating, "If you don't mind, that is."
He raised his camera slightly,to indicate it and ran a hand through his messy hair with the other.
