The tiny county of Wyoming, New York was home to Sam for his first eighteen years and he hopes to never call the Upstate New York area home ever again. He was the only child born to Debbie and Rocco Shepherd, who were both unsuitable parents but refused to accept help from the government. The pair had also both been raised in Wyoming and like almost all of the other residents, refused to leave despite how undesirable the place is to live in. The two were never in love and had Rocco not raped her on the night of their prom, they never would have considered getting married. Well, once Debbie found out that she was pregnant, they were forced by their own parents to elope. The pregnancy ended up becoming a miscarriage, and in his teen years, Sam sometimes wished that his time in the womb had ended in a similar fashion. When Debbie became pregnant a year later, it all went smoothly, however. Little Samuel Steven Shepherd arrived exactly on his due date and seemed to be in perfect condition. It was a miracle really, considering how much Debbie had drank throughout his nine months in the womb. Although he was blessed to be spared from fetal alcohol syndrome and the devastating deformities that can result from drinking while pregnant, it would later be realized that he had some learning disabilities that were probably caused by this.
His childhood wasn't great, but Sam isn't the type to complain about it. In fact, he feels like he actually did well, given his circumstances. Most of his younger years consisted of him exploring the woods in his backyard on his own. When he didn't have school, he'd wake up at the crack of dawn, make himself breakfast and spend nearly all day outside. Sometimes he would play with the neighborhood kids, but he never got along with most of them. In school, Sam wasn't popular. He struggled immensely with his school work and although none of his peers were from high class families, he was scorned for his. His father worked as a truck driver and was rarely home, but when he did, he was extremely abusive towards his mother. Neighbors were constantly calling the police to their house as their fights would extend into the early hours of the morning and almost always end with his mother having a black eye or broken nose. She wasn't innocent in the events either though, because whenever her husband wasn't home, she didn't hesitate to get her sexual fix with other men. Debbie became something of the "town whore" and when word of this spread to Sam's peers, he was outcasted.
College was a chance for Sam to start over. He was awarded a full ride to Fulton for his wrestling score and since relocating to Miami, has only been back to New York once for his grandmother's funeral. He finds his family life to be toxic and rarely brings it up or wants to even think about it. He lives on campus during the year and rents an apartment in Orlando during the summer, since he spends those months working at a Disney water park.

— Joel Osteen
Sam tries to live by this. He could have easily followed the path that his parents set him up for. He probably never would have graduated high school, and definitely wouldn't have left for college. It would have been easy to turn his anger from being into bullied into violence on his own end, and had he not been so motivated to change his life, it's possible that he could have been the same person his father was today. He's not though, and Sam owes it all to self-motivation and care.

If you told Sam that he would be in a fraternity a few years ago, he wouldn't have believed you. Until he got to Fulton, he imagined fraternities to be nothing more than a bunch of rich white guys who wore boat shoes and bright polos, and did nothing more than drink beer and be complete assholes. Some of his assumptions were true, but he learned that being a part of Greek life was so much more than what he imagined. The people he's met through his fraternity have become his best friends and he can't imagine what college would have been like if he didn't pledge Sigma Chi Delta. Not only does his place in the system guarantee that he's never home alone on a Friday night, but it guarantees that he's going to be having fun.
His favorite Greek house is unarguably his own, but as goody-two-shoes as it sounds, he really judges people based on their own personalities and not their house. He would gladly befriend a Beta Gamma guy or Theta Chi girl if they were friendly enough to him.
Plans for after college:
Sam is on the track to earn a bachelor's degree in physical education. Gym was his favorite class in high school, and one of the only classes that he was actually good at and felt comfortable in. He's excited for his future in this field, and wants to work at a middle or high school, and hopefully also make some extra cash by coaching the lacrosse team at the school he works at.
Sam is surprisingly muscular. He spent nearly all of his childhood outside, and buffing up was the one thing that kept him from being tormented as a teenager. As long as he was strong, people just avoided him. He doesn't have the physique of a body builder, but his childhood combined with his wrestling career has kept him pretty fit.
Hair Colour:
Brown
Eye Colour:
Brown
Distinguishing Marks:
He has a two inch scar on his lower leg from cutting it open on a thorny brush when he was a child.
Style:
Sam has never been very interested in fashion, mostly because his family never had them money to be so picky. He prefers wearing casual clothes - shorts or jeans and a t-shirt. Over the summer he grew his hair out a little bit, but just recently cut it back down to it's more preferred length.
