Introduction
Three rangers of the Night's Watch: Ser Waymar Royce, Will, and Gared have departed from the Wall to investigate reports of wildlings in the Haunted Forest which lies to the north. Will, discovers a number of wildling corpses dismembered and arranged in a strange, ritualistic fashion on the ground. He also finds a dead wildling girl pinned to a tree. He reports back to the others, and Gared believes they should return to the Wall and inform the Nights Watch. Ser Waymar overrides the older Gared's advice and instead insists on seeing the corpses for himself, to determine what killed them. When they reach the site, the bodies have disappeared. Will scouts around for clues, but Gared finds a bloody piece of clothing buried under the snow. Further investigations are curtailed when a tall, humanoid figure with glowing blue eyes, arrives and kills Ser Waymar with ease. Gared attempts to escape but is caught and killed. Will, in extreme horror, sees the dead wildling girl from earlier now walking with blue eyes, and also witnesses Gared's death.
Some time later, Will has fled south of the Wall in terror, rather than return to warn Castle Black of the White Walker threat. He is apprehended by outriders loyal to House Stark, the wardens of the North, and is taken to Lord Eddard Stark. Lord Eddard, decrees that as a deserter from the Watch, Will is an oathbreaker and must die. Will accepts his fate, but tells Eddard about the Walkers first, Eddard carries out the execution himself. Two of Eddard's trueborn sons, Robb and Bran, accompany him to the execution along with his bastard son Jon Snow, his ward, Theon Greyjoy, the master-at-arms Rodrik Cassel and his leading guard Jory Cassel. When Bran asks his father about Will's talk of White Walkers, Eddard dismisses it as a madman's ramblings, insisting that the Walkers have been gone for centuries. The party sets out to return to Winterfell.
In King's Landing, the capital city of the Seven Kingdoms, the bells ring out to commemorate the death of Lord Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King. As the Silent Sisters prepare his body for burial, Queen Cersei Lannister looks on. She is worried that Jon discovered something he shouldn't have, and may have told someone. She confesses her fears to her twin brother, Ser Jaime Lannister of the Kingsguard, but he tells her not to worry, since if the King knew the truth they'd be dead already. She tells him he should be the new Hand of the King, but he doesn't want the job. He considers it too much work. Cersei accuses him of taking nothing seriously.
A raven bears news of Jon Arryn's death to Winterfell, where Lady Catelyn Stark informs Eddard. He is particularly stricken because Arryn served as a father-figure to him, when he was fostered at the Eyrie. She also tells him that King Robert Baratheon and much of the royal court rides for Winterfell. Eddard realizes that King Robert means to name him as the Hand to replace Jon Arryn. He ponders refusing, feeling his place is at Winterfell.

The Story So Far... Write a Post » as written by 1 authors
Setting
0.00 INK
The common ring of steel sang through the training yard of the great northern keep as it did many times when the two oldest sons of the Warden of the North sparred. The two circled each other in a dance, each carefully placing their next footing and timing their strikes carefully. For years they had practiced together, and for years they had learned each others strengths and weaknesses. Jon moved in for an overhead slash, with Robb stepping to the side and raising his sword to shield it off.
"Good" Sir Rodrik Cassel, the houses master at arms said overseeing their work "You two may finally be ready to join your father on the battlefield" the old man laughed while smacking a thigh.
"There hasn't been a battle in years Sir Rodrik" Robb said moving in with a thrust, which Jon parried while stepping back
"Well maybe not the like the stories you lads were told as children, but there is fighting that needs doing to keep the North safe" Rodrik said moving over to the weapons rack
"The only real action is at the Wall, and its the best place to go if one wants to keep the North safe" Jon said feinting a slash and coming in with a thrust as Robb rolled to the side and caught Jon in the back of the knee with a pommel.
"Your still going on about the Wall" Rodrik said looking at two sparing knives "Here, you want a challenge" He tossed a knife to each boy.
"What are we to do with these" Robb asked
"There are stories about men across the narrow sea that wield two blades into battle, each acting as if they were controlled by their own man" Rodrik crossed his arms "You boys want a challenge? Lets start small and see how you do"
Across the training yard the ward Theon Greyjoy gave archery lessons to Eddard Starks three youngest children; Arya, Bran, and Rickon. Arya was to be training to be a lady as her mother insisted, yet Arya never was one for the arts of being a lady. A compromise was met, her father decided that her mornings would be spent training with the boys and her evenings spent with her elder sister Sansa training as a lady. Arya quickly agreed.
"Now remember, don't pull with your arm" he tapped Rickons elbow "Raise the elbow and let your back do the work"
The three released arrows, Arya and Brans hitting their targets, with Rickons grazing and flying over the top of his. Rickon lowered his bow with a sigh.
"It is alright little lord" Theon said rubbing Rickons head "You will get there with practice"
Ned and Caitlyn Stark walked into the training yard, Caitlyn smiled at her children, Ned looked up again from the ravens message "Children, come here"
The children put away their training weapons and moved to their father , each one with a mixed look of worry and intrigue.
"I received a letter from Kings Landing' Ned kept his solemn and stoic face "Jon Arryn is dead"
"Father I a sorry" Robb said "We all know how much he meant to you"
"I also received further news" Ned said clearing his throat "THe King rides for Winterfell"
