For once in her life, Scarlet felt utterly and completely useless. She had always been the golden child, the brilliant scientist, the one who was destined for something big. Smarter than smart, bigger than big, Scarlet's identity was forged by her parents, molded to give her the power and privilege she would need to get away with her unusual talents, and allowing her to use them for the most good with the least possibility of discovery. Who would question a surgeon who could heal people by putting their hands inside them? That's what they did, after all.

But somehow, somewhere, that world had come crashing down, and her identity along with it. She hadn't realized until she was knee deep in guard blood that she wasn't Dr. Scarlet Taggert anymore. She couldn't be her, there was simply no need. Now, she was simply Scarlet.

Maybe she needed a new name. Like Scar, or something.

But more than just not being Dr. Scarlet Taggert anymore, there was a far more humbling circumstance that she just couldn't wrap her brain around. For once, in her short but brilliant lifetime, Scarlet wasn't the hero. At this point, she could barely call herself a sidekick in her own story.

What, exactly, had she accomplished? She saved Babble's life in the first five seconds, but it was all down hill from there. Following a madman, screaming in terror at a psychic, tripping on a shoe, having a nervous breakdown over some grass. Yes, Scarlet's life had taken a turn for the unimportant. She had hoped to turn this series of events in her favor, to eke out some justice to save her soul, which was still covered in the blood of that boiling, screaming man.

"You'll need to stay close. I'll keep everything quiet starting... Now."

Well, if she didn't already feel like just a sidekick before, she sure did now. Babble's efforts produced an utter and complete silence that left Scarlet with nothing but the physical sensations of sound, like her pulse beating against her ears and the steady rise and fall of her chest as she breathed.

Suddenly, Babble – her tour guide, her savior, her patient – stopped his relentless movement in search of what was clearly something of interest, something she could not hear, or really see. Deaf and effectively blind, for once in her life, Scarlet found herself wishing Babble really was psychic. Once again, Scarlet had no idea what was going on, or what she could do to help. She opened her mouth to ask questions, but no sound could come. Really, why did he even need her along? At this point she was less than a sidekick, she was a damsel in distress or something similar, and that did not sit well with the former head of pediatric neurosurgery.

But really... what else could she do? She felt her coats for a scrap of paper or a pen, turning them inside out but only finding three cigarettes and a pack of cinnamon gum with a little bit of blood on the corner. Grimacing, she offered the treasures to Babble, as if he would want anything she offered. It didn't really matter if it helped, it was something she could do.

The longer they remained in the unearthly husk of a building, the more Ember's anxiety grew. Unconsciously she shifted uncomfortably, her feet itching to move. She considered using the air to move them all out the entrance quick enough that the cyborg wouldn't react, but she'd never attempted using her abilities to affect others in such a way. She doubted they would be able keep their balance and she would not be able to keep them upright without practice.

That was when there was an uncomfortable tugging in her head and a strange type of pressure. She stiffened, immediately gathering all her will to remove the presence from her mind. In that instant Xandre was gone and she had no need to force him out. Nevertheless she gritted her teeth at his intrusion even as her plans began to be rewoven. If he was still around, she wanted to find him. If there was any chance to throw Sam off, it was to make allies with his only threat. At the moment Xandre meant no harm to her, otherwise he would have killed or controlled her then and there. However she was unsure if he intended to meet up with them or if he was merely keeping tabs on those in the area. Either way, she would have to find him as she was not going to rely on him revealing himself to them.

The rhythmic pattern of yet another's breaths entered the facility, and for a moment Ember went cold thinking they had been found out. She was pleasantly surprised to find Hector had moved just behind her. Her relief was still not enough to make her forgive him for his previous, untimely interruption to her plans. Coolly she ignored him, neither driving him nor acknowledging his presence.

"They are uncertain about this place. They stay clear of it after it collapsed. But your arrival may upset that balance."

Ember inwardly rolled her eyes. Obviously they had upset that balance- they'd destroyed the whole bloody facility. She was careful not to reveal her feelings though, not wanting the female to have any reason to side against them.

"Are you alone or is there more of you? Already I can hear them gathering."

She ground her teeth slightly, wishing that she did not have to answer to this thing. Again she replaced her blank mask, and responded civilly.

"I would prefer to remain alone, however there are many more Anomalies now roaming the forest that may decide to add their presence to our group. There is one other that I am determined to find. If there is anyone that can help us avoid the guards it would be him."

She hated to acknowledge it, however Neppie also needed to know of her plans. She had also managed to send a fairly clear message that she was only interested in teaming up with people who would make themselves useful. She carefully scrutinised the cyborg in front of her again. The thing hadn't moved nor made any suggestions of hostility. Did she dare make a move? Either option was a risk. The longer they stayed her and did not find food nor water the weaker they made themselves and also made it far easier for them to be found. However she did not need to open herself up to being attacked. Her growing headache and hollow stomach decided for her.

"If you'll excuse us, we need to keep moving." Her tone was respectful but firm, and gritting her teeth she started to turn back through the exit hoping not to get shot in the back.

BABBLE

Couldn't things just be simple again?

If dimes were wishes he'd still not have a dime. He waited behind the bush, listening through the bubble but not really in the sense that he could hear them. Their words were all but canceled out but he could still identify the noise coming from the facility. They were still in there. As much as having a roof over their heads sounded alright jeopardizing Scarlet's safety was not a risk he could take. Honestly at this point he was at a bit of a crossroad.

On one hand he could continue forth until they reached the city where he might be able to find shelter and a grocery to pilfer but she was quite slow and he was quite hungry. The energy he'd spend getting to a city quickly would threaten to eat him up before he could get a meal for himself and he couldn't just leave Scarlet behind either. What to do... Hm...

He turned to Scarlet before noticing she was offering some miscellaneous items to him, three cigarettes and a packet of cinnamon gum. Gum wasn't his favorite snack by far as it starts off hard and crunchy before getting all squishy sounding, like chewing on soft flesh like some sort of cannibal. In addition it was also cinnamon, the flavour equivalent of getting shot in the mouth. He had no real desire to try that gum any time soon. Cigarettes were just grody, he'd have no part.

With a simple shake of his head he declined the offer. He did have an idea though. When in doubt of how to best lead Scarlet he figured he could just ask her, present her the options and let her pick her destiny. Either which way she could pick he'd guide her to the best of his abilities, it wasn't like he was presenting any choices that seemed like bad ideas to him. With that intent he lowered the intensity of his sound dampening field so that basic conversation volume was no louder than a faint whisper. It was quiet but just loud enough for her to be able to speak to him.

"I-it seems that the people inside are starting to leave. We could stay hidden back here and wait for them to leave or we c-could move away before they have a chance to see us and continue through the forest. What d-do you think we should do?"

The Hologram emitted a strange hum of disapproval, tinged with static that lasted a second or two before speaking again as the leader of the group made to take her leave.

"Others are seeking you. They will bring danger to us. You have brought danger to us by coming here, but also by escaping. They will seek you here. I-I"

Her voice faltered as she cast her gaze across Ember and the others with her, a little unsure if what she was doing was the best choice but she was without much in the way of alternative options as it was. Her hand reached out a little as she stepped forward, her movement making no sound save that of her voice as she continued.

"I cannot just let you go… You’ve endangered us, and you are already in danger. There are weapons below, tools and food. Old Storage that was never emptied, if you will help us we will help you."

She’d moved towards the group as she spoke, her body language doing its best to convey a sense of trust and honesty in her words but the movement was jerky at best and broken at worst due to the malfunctioning imagers.

"I don’t trust you but because of you this place is no longer safe for her so I need her to be safe."

Several floors below in the room she’d spent much of her life in Eve was lying down on one of the beds that had served as repair stations for the technicians to operate. She stared unblinking up at the ceiling above, looking at the faded cracks and dents that still marred its once pristine surface. Turning her head she looked over at the wall where she’d placed the weapon she’d been repairing with the others, though for the most part they were a mismatch of equipment and even though she’d fixed them they had little to accompany them to make them functional for very long.

At first Ember thought that would actually get away with it and manage to escape outside. However her movement was cut short as quick burst of static sounded the cyborgs displeasure. Ember froze, carefully turning herself back around lest this sound was followed by an attack.

"Others are seeking you. They will bring danger to us. You have brought danger to us by coming here, but also by escaping. They will seek you here. I-I"

Immediately fear tugged at Ember again. She'd made the wrong move telling this creature the truth. It was evidently making her more wary of them and less hospitable. Suddenly it stepped forward. Horrified Ember immediately took two faltering steps backward. Something wasn't quite right in the way the machine moved. She cocked her head to the side slightly her eyes narrowing in concentration. Despite her best efforts the source of her unease was not found before the cyborg continued.

"I cannot just let you go… You’ve endangered us, and you are already in danger. There are weapons below, tools and food. Old Storage that was never emptied, if you will help us we will help you."

This time Ember's reaction was one of alarm. Not only was she now stuck here temporarily but the crazed piece of machinery wanted to attack the guards? She made a strange noise of disagreement unintentionally before quickly silencing herself. There was no way to win a battle with the guards. Their weaponry would far be superior considering how long this old facility had been rusting away. The cyborg continued to step forward sounding more welcoming, but her movements again put Ember ill at ease. That's when it hit her- there was no sound. No noise to suggest the slight grinding of metal nor the transfer of weight onto the concrete floor. And the movements were jerky and uncoordinated. [Perhaps a hologram?[/i] she thought wistfully, as the cyborg continued.

The was when the cyborg mentioned a 'her'.

"You don't need to trust us." Ember started in a neutral tone. "But we can leave you and thereby keep whoever it is you want safe. Fighting the guards is a sure way to get all of us killed. There is no way I am going up against them, I'm in enough trouble already."

In her panic Ember failed to notice the breathing entering on the peripherals. When the breaths suddenly got within one meter, she let out an exclamation of horror and spun around preparing to grab her knives.

She’d moved towards the group as she spoke, her body language doing its best to convey a sense of trust and honesty in her words but the movement was jerky at best and broken at worst due to the malfunctioning imagers. Her hand never touched the hilts. The nozzles of seven guns were pointing at her companions and her own heads.

"Don't move or we'll be forced to shoot." The man in the lead said evenly, carefully staring down the viewpoint at Ember. "Despite what it looks like, it would do you good to trust us. The names Zac, and these are a few of my men. We are not aligned with the facility, on the contrary we oppose. We'll help you get out of this predicament, however we are not stupid. Unfortunately the use of the weaponry here is a necessary evil, as we are all away not all Anomalies are peaceful."

He cocked his head slightly in Ember's direction at the end.

"Now lay down any weapons you have for Ammon to collect."

A strange ringing sound was echoing in Ember's ears as the blood began to rush to her head. She had failed to listen to Zac's little speech, and even if she had there was no way she would trust a human. Her eyes were mere pin pricks surrounded by white iris in her terror and all she could think of was being taken back to the facility. Her frame began shaking violently once again, her small body no longer coping with the intense stress of the last few hours. All of a sudden she felt very cold.

"The wraiths going into shock." Zac's voice was devoid of emotion. He glanced over at Hector, his gun remained aimed at Ember. "Disarm her."

"We're not treating her until I'm sure she won't kill of one of our men. Ammon, once she's disarmed, approach from behind and cover her mouth."

"Ember!" Neptune shouted, putting the little girl down and running over. She felt weak but it was nothing Neptune couldn't shake off. "Don't touch her! Move back!" Neptune didn't care if there were guns pointed at her head, she wasn't about to let these strangers touch her sister. "I said move!" Neptune growled and shoved one of them out of her way. She caught Ember, her grip gentle as she tried to bring Ember back to reality. "Ember it's alright, it's me." She had never seen the raven haired girl act like this before. What had they done to make Ember so afraid?

"It's just Neppy," She hugged the girl tightly, shielding them from whatever attacks were being launched behind them. If she had to Neptune would absorb the brunt of them, she would be the one to get shot if someone dared use their gun. Neptune didn't mind as long as it meant Ember lived. As long as her sister escaped. "They're not with the facility, no one is taking you back. No one is taking us back, we're free." She reassured the girl, rocking her slightly as a mother would do. Neptune was not used to comforting others and so she was a bit awkward with both action and word, but essentially knew what to do.

"You need to give her space!" Neptune turned her head slightly to the people whose guns were still trained on them. "When someone is having an anxiety attack you don't rush towards them! That just makes it worse!" Neptune turned back to Ember then, trying to get the girl to focus on her. "Hey, you gonna be alright? Do you need me to carry you?" She would do it if she had to. Neptune wasn't weak, neither physically nor mentally. When they had been kicked out of their home, Ember had been Neptune's rock. Now Neptune was going to do the same for Ember, she would be the emotionally strong one for the both of them if needed.

Hopefully the others managed to get away. Neptune thought, praying that Reyna, Xandre, and Evan still had a fighting chance. Sure these people claimed that they opposed the facility but you never knew anyone's true intentions. Sam had people everywhere and Neptune doubted he didn't have spies in whatever underground group these people were claiming they were from. Neptune finally released Ember, hopefully the girl was a bit better, and turned to Zac. "Do you have proof? Show me something that says I can trust you." Otherwise she would put Zac and all his men into an illusion that would allow the anomalies to escape.

Reyna wasn't sure what Xandre was telling Evan through his weird psychic powers but she waited patiently for him to tell her. Suddenly a branch behind them broke and Reyna turned, acutely alert to their surroundings. Without her noticing they had been surrounded, guns raised and pointed at them. "Don't move! We're not with the facility and we won't hurt you unless you give us a reason to." Reyna's arms shot into the air, not as a surrender, but a show of she wouldn't try anything. Xandre was deeply embedded in whatever it is he was thinking so it was up to her to advocate for them both. "We're not gonna do anything," Reyna promised, attempting to appear small and weak so that she had the advantage.

"We're hikers, we got lost and have been in these woods for days." The girl attempted to feign innocence, trying to use a story she had just come up with in her head. "Please we're just scared and hungry. We've been walking for days," it was true that the facility happened to be in a popular recreational hiking area. They were located far behind a barbed wire fence so that no one could get near, but Reyna had heard a few rumors that stragglers were taken into the facility and questioned before being killed. That was just a rumor of course, she bet that all they really did was take them back into town and erase their memories of ever having seen the facility.

A few of the guns lowered, they were clearly confused and looking for directions from their leader. Xandre was still deep in what appeared to be thought and Reyna could only hope he had heard her and would play along. Hopefully he would actually speak rather than use his mind talk or whatever he called it. "My brother's sick, he's been babbling on about random things and is starting to hear voices. Please, we just need help." Reyna was so proud of herself, she was giving such a convincing performance and even teared up. They seemed so convinced for a moment until one of them broke the formation and walked up behind her, pushing her hair back to reveal the barcode tattoo. It was the unexpected touch that made Reyna react and her fingers twitched, the man screaming and dropping his gun as his eyes began to bleed.

"Darn, just as I was getting to the good part." She tsked and sighed. "Don't move!" The gun was pushed into her back. Reyna's hands were lowered behind her and tied together. She didn't need her hands to use her ability, but if these guys wanted to feel better by doing so then she might as well let them. Reyna wasn't stupid enough to get caught again, she wasn't going down without a fight. As soon as he stepped back Reyna turned and kicked him in the groin, kneeing him in the face when he fell. She ducked quickly as a bullet whizzed overhead and watched as two men suddenly began moving towards each other, clearly horrified at the seemingly magnetic pull that made them slam together. As soon as the circle was broken Reyna grabbed Xandre's wrist from behind her back and broke into a run, hoping that he could keep up. She didn't get very far though, there were more and a bullet whizzed past her ear, clipping a piece of her hair. She kept running, if they shot from behind Xandre would get shot. It didn't matter to Reyna though, she told herself it was a means to achieving her end but really it was because she knew Xandre could take care of himself.

A terrible pain shot through her leg and blood trickled down her pants. Reyna collapsed, rolling into a patch of earth and grass. She groaned, thankfully it wasn't a bullet that had gotten her but a dart. The world began to feel floaty, as though she were flying through a cloud. Her breathing slowed and Reyna giggled, eventually stopping when whatever was in the dart took over and her head lulled to the side. She was still awake, she just couldn't move.

He could not think straight with all the activity that was happening around him. His mind was going haywire and it was as if bees were buzzing in his head. That was the drawback of being psychic. You could feel the presence, the very souls of others and it was like a thousand things happening at once and your mind attempting to keep up with it. It was torture, but Xandre had trained his mind and body to endure pains and torture that surpassed most of those he helped save. He concentrated and heard Evan speak to him, asking if he knew where Reyna was.

She is here with me, she is safe for now, but we must move.

At that very moment as Reyna was also speaking to him, the presence of scavengers surrounded them. Xandre looked at each of them, but he appeared to be deep in thought and this caused Reyna to have to communicate on her own. She was quite the liar, and he would make note to question her about her slippery tongue when they were alone, but for now he had to figure out how he was going to get out of here with her alive. Simultaneously he was broadcasting what was happening to Evan so that the male wouldn’t walk into a ambush of his own.

Be careful Evan, I will find you soon. That was his last message to Evan as their communication link was broken when Reyna attacked the man who attempted to subdue her. It was a mass of movement as Xandre took out three men with a single gesture. They weren’t as tough as they led on, but again, he was far stronger than the others, and he had more experience with his abilities than the others had. Still, he was no god and it was proven time and time again that his abilities had their limit just as much as anyone else. At the moment, he just wanted to get away from these men and find the others. He could only hope Evan listened to him and avoided any type of ambushes. As the men drew their guns at Xandre, a dust storm whipped up due to his psychic energy blasting the ground beneath them. This allowed for cover as he felt Reyna take off in the opposite direction. He would surely follow her in the cover of the dust and debris. He really had no choice because she had grabbed his wrist and tugged him along with her. Bullets struck the trees that they passed as they ran.

“Keep going, I have an idea,” he exclaimed as he broke their contact before stretching out his hands. The nearby trees began to rumbled and fall in their wake, blocking the path that was taken. He continued this for a moment until he realized Reyna was on the ground. A stray dart had found its mark and she lay motionless but alive. The fallen trees would give them enough time to get out of there. Snatching up Reyna as if she were a rag doll, he teleported, reappearing only a few feet from where they had encountered the bandits.

Snatching the dart out of Reyna’s leg, he examined her body as quickly as he could before placing both his hands on either side of her ears. She was lying flat on the grass and he was concentrating.

“Can you hear me Reyna?” he asked into her mind, “I am going to attempt to push the toxins out of your system which will restore your movement; however, I need you to fully trust me. Do you trust me?”

Do you trust me? That was a very hard thing to ask a child. Especially one who had been abandoned and abused; trust was something to be earned and Reyna hardly confided in anyone. She had misplaced her faith again and again, but if Xandre could truly do what he was claiming and she needed to have full confidence in him for it to be done then Reyna would have no other choice. Otherwise they would be taken back to the facility and the consequences would be even worse. "Yes," Reyna managed to get out through grit teeth. Whether it was a lie or not, not even she could tell.

If one stuck with a lie long enough, it eventually became truth. Or at least that's what her mother had once told her. The woman often believed that her husband was unfaithful and even though she knew, she would put on airs and appear as happy and carefree as always while hiding the fact that she knew her husband was an unfaithful liar. Mrs. Wynter had waited, hoping to catch him in the act but both of her parents had been killed the night she had been taken, so her mother never did find out whether her husband was having an affair. It had sparked quite a rage and Reyna had killed three people before they could subdue her upon seeing her dead parents on the floor.

Do your best Reyna thought to Xandre as the girl could no longer open her mouth. She attempted to relax, but whatever was in her system made her muscles clench up and lock so she couldn't move.

What he was about to attempt was far more dangerous than anything he could ever do. Xandre had never attempted this on a living individual. He had to concentrate, and still he had the chance of tearing Reyna apart limb by limb. Even he could suffer deep lacerations due to this technique. Still, he needed to do this. He promised them he would get them out of this, and he would. Everything was silent around them, but Xandre knew that the bandits were somewhere close. He heard Reyna’s response and knew that part of her was trying to convince the other part that Xandre was a friend. Sighing, he closed his eyes and began to work on removing the toxins from Reyna’s body.

“Reyna, I want you to know that as much strength as you’ve seen from me, the truth is I am just as scared as you are,” Xandre said, and it was true. While he showed great strength and mastery, he was as scared of being caught as they were. He simply chose a different medium of dealing with it. He had been caged for so long that freedom tasted as sweet as fresh nectar. “Truth be told you and the others are the only people who have shown any type of kindness to me since my time in chains. I only hope I can repay you.”

He felt his energy seep into Reyna. This was the first attempt, and it was pivotal in deciding if he would go for it or stop. His energy latched on to Reyna, penetrating her body, but something went wrong and a cut spread up Xandre’s hand, blood trickling onto the ground beneath. He winced and stopped as he examined the gash. He would not allow her to be a vegetable. He had to stop the toxins from spreading. He looked around to make sure no one was around before he closed his eyes again. He felt his mind reach out, he felt the sting of another cut, but this time he did not stop, he kept going and another sting was felt, but he was determined to help her. He felt her very core, and his mind began to reach out on a molecular level, attaching to each molecule of toxin within her body that was causing the paralysis. His body was suffering from this, as another cut formed on his face, and blood trickled down, dripping onto his hands, but he didn’t stop, he kept going. With a force of his will, he demanded the toxins to reroute and head out of the wound they came in through. It took energy, energy he should’ve been conserving, but instead he was using it to push toxins out of a young girl’s body.

He opened his eyes and watched with surprise as a clear liquid began to run out of Reyna’s leg where the dart had struck her. He could’ve leapt for joy if he weren’t in such demanding concentration. After another moment, and as exhaustion began to kick in Xandre released his hold on Reyna. It was complete; she would have activity within the next few moments. He was exhausted, and his body has suffered cuts. He looked at them one by one and smiled.

“Xandre you’re gonna kill yourself one day,” he said to no one in particular as he simply sat there and looked at Reyna.

Xandre expressing that he was not confident in himself did not make Reyna feel any better. There was nothing left to lose though, death would be welcomed compared to the fate that awaited her at the facility. Xandre's ability was worse than being struck by lightning. The pain that ripped through her body made Reyna feel as though she were being torn apart limb by limb. She wanted to cry out in pain, to scream to the heavens but knew better than to make a peep. Besides that Reyna couldn't, her jaw had since locked as her body became rigid from the toxins. All the female could manage was a soft whimper and it sounded like a kitten being kicked.

When it was over and an opaque liquid trickled out of her leg from the hole in which it had entered her muscles slowly but surely unwound, allowing Reyna to relax. The mutant's grip on the grass finally softened and she rolled her spine upwards into a sitting position, dark dots dancing across her vision due to the fact that she had sat up too quickly for her body's liking. "Thank you," Reyna whispered, her voice hoarse. She could see how much pain Xandre was in and knew how much energy this much had set him back. Reyna wasn't stupid, she could see what this had cost him and now they would be set back. "Can you move? We don't have much time." The little girl urged, tugging nervously on the end of her white shirt, a habit she had picked up from years of torture.

"We should find the others and warn them, they need to know that the facility is already on our trail." That meant Sam was not far behind. Where his henchmen went, Sam was sure to follow. The thought of returning to his "care" gave Reyna chills. He had treated Reyna as though she were an animal that had t be dealt with, not a human with a gift she never wanted. No, she would not go back to that place, especially if Sam was there. The scars from torture were still fresh on her skin and in her mind.

"I can try to stop the bleeding if you'd like."

ImageShe is here with me, she is safe for now, but we must move.

Well that was a relief. Evan had been worried that the three of them were separated beyond the limits of the forest but somehow Reyna and Xandre found each other. Before he could talk however, images flashed into his mind, specifically of what was happening on their end. At first Reyna convinced the gun-toting men that they were harmless but once they found her bar code, they began shooting and the redhead had no choice except to defend herself. Watching bullets whiz by, he heard Xandre's voice for the last time before the visions were a distant memory.

Wait, don't leave me! Tell me where you're-

Yet again, someone left him in the dark. He couldn't blame them since the gunmen were chasing after the two, but he was starting to get tired of playing catch up. The psychic couldn't even be assed to give him a precise location. Granted, it wouldn't help Evan since he didn't have GPS, but the thought would have counted. The only things that he picked out from the vision were the trees and perhaps the clothing that the gunmen wore but it hardly helped when the forest was freaking littered with both of those things.

"How am I supposed to stay safe when you won't even tell me the places to avoid?" he asked, a touch too loudly.

"Hey who's there?" a voice called out.

Shit.

Evan slid behind a tree, watching as two women passed by with assault rifles cradled in their arms.

"I bet one of those rats is 'round here," the second woman answered.

He didn't want to alert them anymore than he probably had but he also worried that they could find the others. He hadn't found anyone else yet and Xandre (stressed guy that he was) hadn't linked anyone else's minds together so they could be anywhere. Well they probably were "anywhere." Hopefully these two would go back and he'd be able to sneak off.

"I'm just getting paid to patrol here," the first said with a shrug, "why should I care that some other facility fucked up?"

"How 'bout 'cause we don't want mutated little shits revealing us?"

"Screw that," the first nodded, "let's go back."

Yes! Good!

"Aha! Caught you!"

No! Not good!

He'd cheered too early because he immediately raised a wall to block the hail of bullets that came his way. With no weapons or training his first instinct was to run and encase himself in rock (which was a bit counter intuitive since rock tended to be heavy). He needed a vantage point or a distraction to take these two out because he feared that looking back for even a moment would mean certain death. He didn't know what those bullets were made of (or whether they were really even bullets), but there was no way they were rubber. The immense pressure from each hit made sure of that.

He turned a hard left, heading farther and farther away from the original campsite in favor of perhaps losing the two and hopefully, finding somewhere (or someone) safe.

A branch snapped as the two sat there. Xandre turned his head to see a familiar face.

"I leave you for one moment and you get cut up like this?" Niall said with a soft smile.

Xandre looked at him before turning to Reyna, "I'll be fine, we have to get to Ember."

"Ember, you mean Wraith? I've heard about her through the facility. She is quite the anomaly."

"Yes and I promised her and the others that I would get them out of here, and I meant what I said."

"I see that. Let me heal you up, you as well darling." Niall bent down and touched Reyna first. His mutation began to work immediately. His energy seeped into her, closing her wounds and giving her energy she thought was gone. Niall looked drained afterwards, but he turned to Xandre and nodded. "You're next handsome."

Again he placed his hand on Xandre's shoulder and within a few moments Xandre's cut had closed. It was strange the feeling one felt when they were healed by Niall. Leaning against a tree, Niall sighed.

"I wanted to find you. The others are dead. I found bodies strewn about, I think the group you encountered had something to do with it. I couldn't stay any longer, I had to come find you, I am certain Sam is behind this, though why would he kill us?"

"He wouldn't. To him we are play toys, things to experiment with to find out more about us. We fascinate him, we make him curious, and as long as we are alive it is like a game to him and he will come and attempt to capture us. I believe there is treachery at work here though." Xandre stood to his feet and closed his eyes. "Ember open your mind."

His mind reached out sending a signal to all of them, those that he had saved and those he saved who were still alive. His location was a mystery to even him, but he would feel their presence and know where they were. One mind stood out and it was Ember, though something was indeed wrong. Her mind was chaotic, several things happening at once. It was like firing a machine gun. The vibrations she had put off made him fully aware that she may be in danger. He looked at Reyna and Niall.

"They're in that direction," he said heading in the direction he had felt Ember's mind. He linked with Evan's mind once more and gave him his general direction. He could feel stress from both parties. "No doubt Evan and Ember are under attack as well. We must move, we must get to Ember. Evan knows how to maneuver, he can read the signs I left him in the visions, at least I hope.."

Scarlet shrugged at Babble's polite refusal. It wasn't as though she'd actually expected him to go for it. Harboring similar sentiments towards cigarettes and gum meant the items held little use to her for their intended purpose, but Scarlet was an intelligent, resourceful woman. Perhaps she might have use for some sticky binding or a water-resistant cardboard scrap or some slow-burning fuse later, and these atrocities could be put to better use. Slipping the items back into her pocket, Scarlet's focus returned to the building at hand.

“I-it seems that the people inside are starting to leave. We could stay hidden back here and wait for them to leave or we c-could move away before they have a chance to see us and continue through the forest. What d-do you think we should do?”

'People'. Objectively, a neutral term. In no other situation would Scarlet have felt the shiver that coursed down her spine as it did in this moment at the mention of 'people' leaving. But given what she had gone through since regaining consciousness, 'people' could mean any number of awful, wonderful things. Food. Shelter. Companionship. Purpose. Death.

Why did Scarlet feel like Babble was leading her through a 'choose your own adventure' book with all the happy endings torn out? Weighing the pros and cons effectively ended in a tie, and Scarlet mentally flipped a coin.

“Let's wait. Either they'll be friendly and we can join them, or they'll leave and perhaps we can forage. We need... supplies, I think. Food. A scalpel. Matches. Water.”

Maybe some clean clothes, too. Scarlet bent down to scratch at her leg where dried blood made her scrub pants cling to her in a most disturbing way.

As much as Scarlet desperately wanted to be not here, she also couldn't really name a single place she actually wanted to be, other than her old hospital. When had it become 'old'? It seemed like she was there only hours ago. How long had she even been here? Given her final few memories about her last day on the job, Scarlet very much doubted her old job would want her anywhere near the building.

If it even still existed. If she wasn't in Hell already. They were surviving, now, they were as safe as they could be, and in very little danger of being overheard. At least, so she surmised. And with a plan of 'waiting' now in place, it wasn't like they were pressed for time or brain power. The tidal wave of curiosity threatened to drown her now that she had space to breathe.

“What month and year is it? Do you know how long I was in there, or why?”

It seemed by the girls’ reaction to her offer of tools she had made a rather significant miscalculation of the stranger; her motives and her resolve foremost among her margin of error. She seemed more inclined to leave, without issue but alas her being here was dangerous enough. Before the Hologram was able to formulate another plan with which to best deal with the intruders she saw the girl cry out before spinning on her heels, her knives flicking into her grasp.

Within moments the doorway was filled with moving figures, well-armed with the barrels pointed directly at the intruders to the facility. Though in classification both groups could be counted as such despite there existing an uncertain animosity between the two, though, if his words were to be believed only on this side of the weaponry.

The sight of the other girl, who had muttered ‘Neppy’ which was to be assumed a shortened version of her actual name and would require additional intel to process, cradling the slowly stilling form of Ember in her arms was unsettling to the Hologram. Though overall the fact that these strangers had not only brought more to the facility but those who seemed to not be their allies deeply infuriated the Hologram. She flickered on the border between the darkened corridor and the light from remaining sources as well as the now opened doorway, unsure of how to proceed.

"You have been found." She whispered as quietly and sombrely as she could while standing there, helpless and unsure as her eyes locked on the armed guards. The moment the words had been uttered, laced and distorted by static she knew she had made a grave error. The guards had now surrounded the four, but as her unnatural voice echoed in the darkness the two nearest swung round and traced their guns towards her.

“Who said that? Show yourself. Step forward slowly or we open fire.” The man who spoke glanced towards Zac for a moment to clarify before returning his attention to the hall from which the flickering form of the Hologram moved jerkily into sight, her arms shimmering above her head.

"I want to hide. To be left alone. Leave us alone." Now her voice was distorting more as the imagers struggled to accommodate her commands, in addition to her rising uncertainty and desperation. At first she had seemed afraid but by the time her last words had completed she radiated fury, to the point that her body seemed to be wreathed in fire. The effect was only made worse by the loud pops accompanied by sparks as the four or five imagers she was linking together exploded simultaneously. The result was her image winking out of existence and her final three words echoing from the speakers for a few moments as if a badly kept record was stuck on repeat. At last it faded to a dull hum before a final crackle silenced even that.

"Ember! Don't touch her! Move back! I said move!"

The sound came as though from behind a closed door; muffled and altogether distant. Through her hazy sight Ember saw one of the men fall and suddenly someone was holding her. The touch was gentle but she was not in her right mind and her nerves automatically went on fire causing her to convulse in panic.

"Ember it's alright, it's me. It's just Neppy,"

She froze. Her tremors subsiding as her sister held her. For a moment Embers whole frame relaxed, collapsing in Neptune's arms.

Zac watched the proceedings with his eyebrows raised before turning to Ammon.

"I thought I told you to dart em if they came even close to hurting one of our men." he said in a low voice. His eyes accused Ammon as he stared him down.

Ammon just gave him a crooked grin.

"What was she going to do? Throw us into an illusion? She couldn't kill us." He paused, his expression suddenly lighting up to something cheeky. "…Besides she's rather pretty."

Zac appeared to ignore his last comment, instead turning his attention to Neptune, his expression puzzled.

"We need to get moving."

This had an immediate reaction on Ember with the girl once again going rigid. She clung to Neptune.

"They're taking us back, they're taking us back!"

"They're not with the facility, no one is taking you back. No one is taking us back, we're free."

Ember just went glassy eyed and gave up, once again just falling back into Neptune's embrace. She felt herself being rocked and finding herself having no energy to react she just let it all happen, staring unseeing at the ceiling.

"You need to give her space! When someone is having an anxiety attack you don't rush towards them! That just makes it worse!....Hey, you gonna be alright? Do you need me to carry you?"

Ember couldn't force herself to respond. As far she was concerned shutting down was her only option. Abruptly she felt Xandres presence on her mind. In desperation she immediately started mentally calling out to him. She wasn't even aware if he could hear her, but she figured she didn't have much to lose. She begged him to come help them for a few seconds before she felt herself slipping away. She accepted the unconsciousness gratefully allowing it to suck her in to its darkness.

"Do you have proof? Show me something that says I can trust you."

Zac paused for a moment, assessing Neptune carefully before he opened his mouth.

"And how would we prove it? Technically anything could be an act. However think for a moment, really you have two options. One: You fight us off, wander around on your own until Sam picks you all up and takes you to the second facility. Or Two: You risk coming with us.

"We're not your enemies Neppy. We're around here trying to pick up Anomalies to get them away to safe houses before the facility finds them. The guns are a precaution. Due to our moles in the facility we are well aware of the dangerous Anomalies. If it wasn't for your sisters bloody past, all the guns would have darts in them. As it is- darts aren't enough of a deterrent for the more deadly. We found that out the hard way."

His voice quietened at the end.

"We need you to come with us." He said with a sense of urgency. "If we take too long now, the facility will take all of us too and then who will stop them?"

“Who said that? Show yourself. Step forward slowly or we open fire.”

Zac glanced over to see one of his men aiming at a figure in the dark. Suddenly it came towards them, arms raised in surrender.

"I want to hide. To be left alone. Leave us alone."

The voice was distorted and difficult to understand. And then the tone changed. The figure seemed to explode in a rage before the hall was empty.

"Damn."
Zac breathed out for a second. "Who is she?"

Ammon shrugged.

"Never heard of her…she doesn't live here does she?"

Zac ignored Ammon, and gestured to two of the men to follow him down the tunnel, calling back to Ammon as he did so.

"Get the rest to the safe house. We can't leave this one here, Sam will find her otherwise."

As soon as Zac disappeared, Ammon chucked his dart gun to the ground. He ignored the sound of a disapproval of the man behind him instead grabbing the bag the man had been carrying behind the group. Walking up to Neptune he held out a wrapped bar of some sort out to her.

"Take it. I know you mustn't have eaten for a while. Sorry 'bout Zac an 'is guns. He lost one of his men a few months back and now he's just cautious." The blonde carefully peered over Neptune's shoulder to glance at the Wraith.

"Yer sister's passed out" He commented, before his eyes narrowed in scrutiny. "She's not really what I expected. Them moles described her as a right terror."

He laughed suddenly, seemingly unaware that perhaps his comments were not particularly wanted. Suddenly his whole expression changed. It held a strong sense of sincerity.

"Are you goin' to come with us?"

"Ember?" Neptune shook her sister slightly, attempting to wake the girl up. "Crap, she's out like a light." Neptune mumbled and bit down on her thumb nail in thought, an awful habit she had picked up inside the facility. It looked like Neptune would have to carry her sister after all although whether or not she was strong enough was the real question. While debating, one of the men came over, his shaggy blond hair falling into his eyes. Her blood boiled at the sight of him, at the fact that his partner had used the nickname only her precious sister ever used. Neppy, it was somewhat of a tease really considering Neptune was really the name of an underwater Greek God.

Her mind stopped whirling though when he reached out with what looked like some sort of packaged square. In response the girl's stomach growled. Neptune hadn't thought about it, but she really hadn't eaten in a long time. Gratefully, Neptune took it from him and opened up the silver wrappings to find a sweet and sticky granola bar. The flavors danced across her tongue in marvelous harmony, it had been a while since Neptune had eaten anything but bland gruel and the occasional piece of meat or cheese. Despite how she felt, the black and white haired girl attempted to suppress the overwhelming emotion of joy and swallowed, savoring every bite. It wasn't until she had licked her fingers clean that Neptune answered him.

"I wouldn't worry too much about Ember," as she spoke she shifted her sister in her arms, lifting Ember onto her back. This was no easy task considering that Ember was limp and so her body right now weighed twice as much. "She talks a big game, but really Ember doesn't want to hurt anyone." A steely expression suddenly adorned her face as she practically whispered the words, "It's Sam's fault. Not her's." Neptune would protect Ember to the ends of the earth, if she didn't; who would? "If anything you should be looking out for Xandre and Reyna, he's older but powerful and she's young and impressionable. The other's I'm not so sure about."

It's true what she had said and Neptune really did not know to what extent Sam had gotten into Xandre and Reyna's brains. She knew Sam had been torturing the two, using them to get rid of other's he no longer needed. It almost made her worry about reuniting with them. "I will come with you, yes. However, if Ember leaves, I go too." She got to her feet, holding onto Ember tightly. "So if your partner is Zac, what do they call you?"

Just the mention of that man's name was enough to make her blood turn cold. Reyna hated Sam fervently, he had killed her parents, made her kill ceaselessly, and used her as a puppet in his twisted game of marionettes. She had almost died in the maze he had created and so the very mention of that cold hearted man's alias sent chills down her spine. The goose bumps went away though, but the feeling of being trapped with no where to run was ever present. Even free she would live in constant fear of that man, of that name. "We should get going," Reyna mumbled as Niell healed her. She uttered a thanks and rose to her feet, suddenly fully awake and awfully energized, like a fully charged battery or a kid in a candy store.

Reyna felt antsy, she wanted to move and jump around and do anything that wasn't standing still. She had to wait though, it seems as though using his ability had taken a lot out of Niell and he was out of breath. "What if Evan doesn't know how?" Neptune questioned. What if he was like her and had an incomplete education and could barely write his name much less find clues in a mine field of facts. There was no time to wait though, it was do or die and they had to keep moving for the shouts began to grow louder and clearer with every passing moment. So Reyna did what she always did, she kept moving forward. Her hands felt empty, she played with the bottom of the sleeves on the jacket she was wearing but it was odd walking around and not having anyone yell at her for standing out of line or being forced into a situation where she had to choose self preservation or the life of another.

Reyna was not innocent, no her innocence had been stolen like so many other anomalies who had been forced into the clutches of the facility, but she would do anything to preserve the young girl's and boy's of today. So Reyna started walking in the direction Xandre had pointed. Her bare feet picked up leaves, the soles of her heels stained with the color of earth. Eventually another ruined building was well within her sights but before Reyna could even grow close a voice yelled at her to freeze. She obeyed, jumping in the air in surprise which set off a chain reaction and a bullet whizzed past her, grazing the top of her left ear. A high pitched yelped erupted from within her, causing yet another bullet to zoom past her, this one missing it's margin by a large streak. "Stop shooting!" Reyna begged, holding her injured ear and not wanting to be hit by another more.

BABBLE

“Let's wait. Either they'll be friendly and we can join them, or they'll leave and perhaps we can forage. We need... supplies, I think. Food. A scalpel. Matches. Water.”

Wait. That was to be their next move. Babble couldn't really argue with this, he didn't have any real idea of what to do either. He could do a lot of things right now but his desire to do so was not strong. He was content with listening, evading detection while monitoring everyone's conversations, spying on them without any real consequence. It wasn't that he necessarily wanted to listen in on everyone's conversations like he was the CIA or something but it was a built in function of being the embodiment of sound, something that he could feel as well as he could hear. In his mind sound was a limb of his, all sound forming an all encompassing appendage he could feel and interact with.

“What month and year is it? Do you know how long I was in there, or why?”

Her question stirred him from his train of thought, his eyes focused on her instead of simply wandering as though he were seeing shapes in the air.

"Q-quite a good question i-indeed my Scarlet Friend. Let me recall..." He mulled the thought over in his head, listing through all the various discussions people around the facility had, searching for relevant discussions about the date. It wasn't all too difficult as the facility was highly bureaucratic, complete with high volumes of paperwork which needed dates.

"Today is May the fifth, two thousand and fifteen. You were b-brought into the facility three months ago on February t-the first. I remember hearing about it nine months into my stay there. It w-was thirty five days after they had last opened the door to my cell. It was nice of them t-to of let light into my cell that day. They normally just kept my cell p-pitch black. They didn't want me to see m-my surroundings just in case. Oh, if only they knew how little it meant."

Suddenly a weird idea just popped right into Babble's head. A wide crooked smile plastered itself across his pale face. "I can recall the conversation they h-had when they first brought you in. I had it stashed a-away like so much else, now wouldn't be a b-bad time to share that? No, I can't see why not."

Like an echo fading back on it's return two voices slowly came into being. The voice of an older man and a somewhat younger woman, both scientists as evident by their use of complex terminology. It was the voices of the scientists discussing their course of actions as to how to approach studying Scarlet while she was in an induced coma. The beeps, whirs and overall hum of the machines which kept her under could be heard in the background as they spoke of her, continually referring to her as a subject.

Seeing as they couldn't examine the limits and functions of her abilities in the same fashion as the other anomalies there were a number of rather invasive and rather aggressive procedures suggested, many of which would of been deemed inhumane in a less amoral crowd. There were no real decisions confirmed given their lack of understanding of her powers and eventually they just decided to resume the discussion again in the future and separated to go about attending other examinations and experiments. As the room went quiet the audio slowly faded out, the sound in the area slowly returning to the gentle sound of nature and people talking far into the distance.

Babble simply turned his head like a curious owl, watching and waiting for Scarlet's response.
