Aura was born Gerard Michael Hottinger in November 1981 with a twin sister, Brie. His mother, Denise Hottinger, named him after her husband, who left the family shortly after the twins turned a year old. Denise toted her kids around from boyfriend to boyfriend, oftentimes leaving the kids with her parents in El Paso. Aura and Brie grew up in that rickety old desert house with their aging hippie grandparents, Thom and Basil Rosesson. When Aura turned eighteen, he legally (and bitterly) changed his name to better reflect those he loved.
He and Brie would often go months without so much as hearing from their mother, though she would take Brie with her a lot more often than she took Aura. This led Aura to believe, perhaps logically, that he was an inferior child. He grew to resent his mother and, though somewhat hesitantly, his sister. His mother, he would later discover, did have her own issues: she was a consistent victim of domestic violence and an alcoholic. Aura tended to be a "problem child" turned "rebellious teenager," and though there were some venomous hard feelings between his grandparents and their daughter, they did as right as they could by Aura. He started drinking and smoking cigarettes and pot as a very young teenager. He would run away, skip school, and dropped out twice. He graduated two years late as a result, but by then he was already deep into his passion for music.
He hopped a few bands before he and his best friend Ricky Bardosz moved to New York and founded Sorry About That (circa 2002). Ricky, front man and rhythm guitar, was twenty-three, and Aura was about to hit twenty-one. The band accepted their drummer Blaire Aceves, twenty-three, and bassist Jack Darling, twenty-six. (Shortly thereafter, Blaire and Ricky started dating, and are still married in the present.) Aura turned out to be the lyrical genius and chief songwriter, partnered up most often with Blaire's taste for edgy, relatable cynicism. They allocated a steady fanbase throughout the first several years, and were signed to an independent label during their fourth year. In the past several years, they have really broken out, and enjoyed some stressful but overall exciting word touring.
Aura settled in Manhattan after a couple of years of touring. He met his long-term girlfriend Lestari Kiaidemak during a run of Warped Tour in 2009. She moved into his Upper West Side apartment in late 2012.
