When you first meet Mona, she can come off as much more aggressive than she actually is. It is always difficult to foretell, in a given situation, how Mona is going to react. When he was sentenced to three years in prison Mona thought her whole world would end. She wouldn't eat and couldn't sleep, everything was worse without her big brother there, so when she asked to move to New York and attend high school there her parents were more than happy to comply. It was easy to get lost in New York, and it was easier for Mona to find herself and become the confident young woman she was now.
