Introduction

Set in Italy, Gunslinger Girl follows the exploits of the Social Welfare Agency (often referred to as simply "the Agency"), ostensibly a charitable institution sponsored by the Italian government. While the Agency professes to aid the rehabilitation of the physically injured, it is actually a military organization specializing in counter-intelligence and counter-terrorism. It is composed of two independent branches: Public Safety, its surveillance and intelligence-gathering division, and Special Ops, the anti-terrorist division. Special Ops is itself divided into Sections 1 and 2, the latter of which employs young girls who have experienced traumatic and near-death experiences fitted with cybernetic implants as agents. The implants, which consist of synthesized muscles and carbon fiber frames, result in heightened strength and reflexes as well as high resilience to damage and pain. Each girl is paired with an adult male trainer, or "handler", and together they are referred to as a fratello — Italian for "siblings". The handler is responsible for the training, welfare and field performance of his charge, and is free to use whatever methods he considers suitable. While these methods vary according to the handler, a common part of each girl's regimen is brainwashing called "conditioning", which produces a deadly assassin with unquestioning loyalty to her handler but, if used excessively, also limits her life span.
Each fratello exhibits a unique dynamic. Most of the handlers have police or military backgrounds and were recruited directly into Section 2. Most also chose their own cyborgs from a list of candidates, though some appear to have been assigned a cyborg. The Social Welfare Agency primarily concerns itself with dealing with the Padania Republic Faction (PRF or RF), an organization seeking an independent Northern Italy through acts of terrorism and bribery.

With a rise of terrorism and anti-government organizations, America pleaded with Italy for their secret weapons, cybernetic fighting machines in the form of children. Italy, after some time, agreed to give their weapons upon agreement that the cyborgs would in no way be used against the Italian government (unless asked). It took years of scientists working to improve the technology. Now it’s 2013 and the cyborgs are needed more than ever. The scientists managed to adapt the technology and use it with boys. The Social Welfare Agency, American Division is ready to send out their little cyborgs on whomever they are ordered too.

Max

Max walked through the double doors that marked the end of her training session. She had been improving greatly with all the practice she had gotten in. But she still wasn't perfect. Occasionally she would trip here or miss a turn there, it wasn't good enough.

"Well done Max," one of the lab coats said. "I think you could work on your speed, but other than that, you are doing very well." That meant it was time for her to go to the track and run until she felt she was faster than before. On the last mission, she had gotten to messy and soiled her favorite jacket with blood. Ever since then, she had barely slept and continued to train as much as she could. She didn't feel she had time for anything else. What would come out of having a failure as a soldier. There was no reason in keeping her if she couldn't do her job right.

She absentmindedly made her way to the track of the 'institution' to continue her training. But would running nonstop improve her speed? It should have, but if it didn't? Maybe she was defective or something needed to be replaced. Was Max broken? On all her physical visits to the doctor, he had told her that she was in perfect condition. Maybe it was all the training, or something was just happening. All she knew was that she needed to improve.

Daniel Westfield

Daniel sat there, in the window, as the morning sun hit his hair. It gave it this golden look, a look of innocence. And maybe, for a moment, he looked peaceful. But only for a moment. Daniel looked over to a man carrying a suitcase enter a hotel elevator. Daniel, grabbing his backpack and slinging it across his back, quickly darted into the elevator with him. And then, the voice came.

"Good Daniel. Stay with your target. And remember, the priority is the contact, not the buyer. I will keep watch through your cyber eye".

The voice in his head was his handler. Daniel looked over at the man, smiled like any other innocent child, then faced forward again. A little thing about Daniel, is that he knew how to kill this man six different ways in this elevator. Seven, if he had no martial arts training. For a moment, he had an extreme amount of static over comms, but then it normalized again.

The elevator stopped. Daniel knew this was his floor, so he got out first, and walked in any direction. The man got out, and started to walk the other way, so Daniel knew what to do. "Oh, wrong way..." he noted out loud, turned around, and started following the man. As he made his way forward, however, he got a strange message.

"Be careful. We finally figured out what the payment is. They are paying the Triad with a shipment of young girls, ages 10-16, and that briefcase holds their location. Priority change. If we stop the payment, it could damage relations with the Triad. Additionally, try to acquire both Briefcases yourself, and only leave the bodies of one side. Make it look like a betrayal. Oh, and give the discovery of the bodies some...increased speed..."

"Orders?" Daniel whispered.

"Charge in and kill everyone" he got, though the message was kind of staticy. Some sort of interference on the comms. Unknown to Daniel, that was not what his handler had said. What he said was "Listen in on the conversation, we are also hearing rumors they may be discussing secrets they learned about our government". But unknown to Daniel, someone was intercepting and altering the messages he got from his handler.

Someone was playing Daniel, and he didn't even know it. But worse, this meant that someone knew about his Cyber Eye frequency.

Vladimir

Fields, freedom, cheap wine, and a burly woman by his side. Vladimir frolicked through this vision when he was suddenly interrupted by the irksome and deafening sound of the alarm. In the haze of the early morning Vladimir pulled out his trusty pistol from underneath his pillow and unloaded four hollow point rounds into his digital alarm clock. Vladimir sat up and shrugged off the sheets that beckoned him to stay. Vladimir dangled his feet off the edge of his bed and gingerly inserted them in the pink bunny slippers that he had gotten from that silly secret Santa party last year. Vladimir picked up the broken remains of the digital alarm clock and dropped it into the waste basket by his desk. With a few taps Vladimir signed into his computer and checked the time. 9:30, Shit, someone must have messed with his alarm clock. Vladimir quickly got dressed into his suit and tucked away his pistol in the depths of the jacket.

Vladimir did a quick mental check. Suit? Check. Watch? Check. Pistol? Check. Shoes? ... shit. Right where his shoes were supposed to be was a fallen cardboard file box, its informational entrails strewn out in a disorganized mess. Vladimir raised his arms in frustration, "I don't have time for this nonsense." Vladimir slipped his feet back into his slippers and stepped out into the SWA living quarters. Vladimir made a quick turn and banged slowly and deliberately against the door adjacent to his. "Yo China Face, it's time to get a move on! We got things to do and then after that we'll probably have other things to do." When there was no reply Vladimir banged on the door harder. "Hey, you in there? Cause those thing we most likely have to do are not going to wait for us."

Alice

Alice tossed another chunk of bread out to the ducks that were ushering their babies around the lake. "Ducks," she shouted repeatedly as she giggled uncontrollably. "I wish I could keep a baby duck. But I think it would miss you to much Mama Duck." A baby duck wandered from it's mother to the chunk of bread resting at Alice's side. "Hi little duckie." Alice picked up the willing duckling and held it in the palm of her hand. She gently pet the little animal with her finger, giggling as it quacked happily to her.

Not to much longer after, the rest of the babies family made their way to her. "You guys are so cute! So pure ..." The ducklings were fuzzy and soft still new to the world. Some of them probably wouldn't make it, but they were looking at the world like nothing was wrong. "I wish I could be like you guys. Besides the feathers," Alice giggled. "Oh well. I'm here now."

The bread was soon gone and the duck family headed back to the pond. Alice herself put in her headphones, blasted her music and laid back in the grass, watching the clouds pass. She got fed, had people to take care of her, she had a room, what was missing? Nothing as far as she was concerned. Maybe she was the only cyborg who thought so, but Alice knew that what they did wasn't right. She wasn't sure what the difference between right and wrong were anymore. But if she told that to the shrinks, she might have to be completely reconditioned.

Alice yawn and stretched, a nap sounded amazing. So when her eyes drifted shut to the beat of her music, she didn't try and stop it from happening.

Daniel Westfield:

Daniel watched as his target entered the room. He armed himself with his dual Desert Eagles, and took out a pressure grenade. It is like a regular grenade, only it uses pressure and compression, not gunpowder. As a result, it is, in essence, a silent grenade. It is packed with shrapnel, as it lacks the actual fire and explosion. He kicked open the door, and shot everyone in the room. Except there was Justine problem.

There was no one in the room. There was a dead body however, and a computer set up next to a green screen. The body had a bullet wound in the head, but he heard no shot and saw no flash. As he went over to the computer, someone shot at him from the bathroom while he was in front of the green screen. He shot back, but the shooter moved to the window and jumped out immediately after shots were fired. However, Daniel did graze him, something the man had probably expected not to happen because of his plan. Daniel then went over to the computer as he tried to contact his handler. On the computer, there was a video however.

His handler was sitting in mobile ops, when someone who looked exactly like Daniel shot him. Daniel looked back at the green screen. "What the hell? It was a trap...".

Daniel knew though any novice computer expert could tell it was fake when they examined it. But that would take some time. And they might send someone after him, probably someone like himself. Someone had at least temporarily burned him for the next few hours. He knew he needed to disappear, but he needed to make sure the message got sent to not overlook examining the tape. He sent a message to his handler's comm network, hoping someone would receive it. But he got a message back.

"Nice try, Danny Boy".

That, if only for a moment, made him feel a pinch of fear. He looked at the briefcase on the ground, and opened it. They had his handler's file, as well as his own. Though, the picture they had was fuzzy, at best, if compared it could be recognized. They also had files on the Social Welfare Agency, including one operations post.

But, Daniel got lucky. Checking the pockets of the dead body, he found a business card for a warehouse downtown. "They forgot to clean his pockets. Good. My target is still the buyer, even if he never intended to buy anything".

He left the room, but he took pictures of everything inside the briefcase. By now, there would probably be a yellow alert out on him. Wanted for detainment if possible, death if necessary. And that almost always meant death, unless he got lucky. He just had to survive long enough for the analysts to determine the video was a fake. Additionally, maybe he could find evidence at this warehouse.

He wondered who would be sent after him? They might send multiple people, since he is one of them.

He got onto the elevator and went down towards the lobby, hiding his weapons. He had off site safe houses established in several cities including this one. He just hoped that HQ didn't kill him before his innocence was established.

(Let the plot begin! Hope it's interesting enough for ya!)

In a time when most were sleeping, that sacred period in which bliss and utter peace was bestowed onto each individual, was a time in which a particular girl’s attention was consumed by dread. No matter how many times she blindly lashed out to grab hold of slumber’s thread with vain, it always evaded her..and for good reason, one could suppose. After all, it must be taxing on the body to continuously replay those horrific events, to relive those damned memories when others were dreaming up pleasantries...to experience, each night, the deaths of your targets and the death of your own purity, of your own holiness. And so, here lied Seiren, those cerulean orbs straining in that hushed lighting to make out various shapes and scenes in the ceiling’s paint, anything to make the time pass by until she was needed once more.

With a resigned sigh of annoyance, that imagination of which she desperately needed evading her...much like the taken-granted of sleep, she sent a quick flicker over at the clock. 9:15…. I guess that’s enough for today.. mused her stony inner voice, only a slight twinge of bitterness lacing those words. Exhaling once more, the doll-esque girl swung her legs over the side of her bed before gingerly slipping a foot down to make contact with the floor. Giving a slight cringe at the knives and needles pricking up the length of the appendage, Seiren wasted no time in making it’s suit follow. With a suppression of the yawn that was clawing it’s way up her throat, the cyborg groggily chased away such human reactions as she crossed the room to the cabinet designated as her own.

Mid-way through pulling on her usual outfit, a loud bang erupted the silence and rattled the hinges. Yo China Face, it's time to get a move on! We got things to do and then after that we'll probably have other things to do. Hey, you in there? Cause those thing we most likely have to do are not going to wait for us."

With a soft sigh, Seiren had just finished pulling her shadowed curtain into the two uneven pigtails, her signature, and was currently making a move to answer the door. Pulling it open, a blank expression in her gaze, the girl's voice come out as a soft whisper, no emotion adding color to the tone. "Alright. I'm ready."

Walter woke up from his sleep, with the realization that he was still at his computer, the browser flickering to indicate he had received a new message. Clicking it open revealed it to be work, sending him a mission. An odd one.bartached to the message was a video clip of a child killing man using a handgun. Walter's sleepiness evaporated. The child had yellow hair. Closer examination of the blurry picture led Walter to realize it was Daniel Westfield, one of the cyborg field operatives of the SWA. The mission was to apprehend him to be brought back to the SWA. This mission probably was sent to other handlers and cyborgs. That, however, Walter did not know. Locking the computer, Walter got up and grabbed the briefcase at the side of his chair, containing his equipment, and took his coat from the coatrack nearby. In his haste, he decided he could skip the hat. With that, he began to look for Alice.

A quick look at Walter's phone gave him the position if Alice. She was outside, near the lake. Walter began to walk towards her position. When he finally got to her, he noticed she was nearly asleep. Or maybe she was fully asleep. And listening to music. Walter moved closer, sat down next to her, and then lightly tapped on her shoulder, just enough to wake her.

"Alice, wake up. We have work to do."

Alice

Alice was reaming sweetly of riding a giant duck when a tapping on her shoulder awakened her. Her stretching was most feline-like and her yawn was like a roar of a howler monkey ... well ... sort of. The young girl looked up to see her handler, Walter, sitting next to her. Alice smiled at him.

"We have work to do." She heard and nodded.

"What is the job now," Alice said, trying not to whine. It had seemed like they had just gotten back from one mission, why would another one come up so soon? Because the world couldn't handle it's own problems and shoved it on little assassin girls. "Recon, protection, capture, siege and destroy, silence, tell me if I'm getting warm." Alice took out her music and paused it as she stuffed it into her pocket. "Is it gonna be more than one day? When are we leaving? Am I allowed to bring a pop tart with me?" The last questions wasn't truly random, Alice's stomach grumbled due to her feeding her lunch to the ducks and fish.

The flood of questions caught Walter off guard. Luckily, he could satisfy most of them with a single answer.

"Well, you see, we have to locate an agent, a cyborg, and detain him to bring back here. Or to kill them, depending on if your orders change or not. For now, we need to get him back. As for who it is and what happened, it looked like Daniel Westfield, and it looked like he killed somebody that maybe he wasn't supposed to. We will probably leave soon, unless you have something urgent you need to do. I use the term, "urgent," loosely. It will possibly be more than one day, but I doubt any more than 2. Or it could go very badly, and then it might take a while, or make more missions to do in the future. Also, you can definitely bring a poptart. I'll be in the car, planning our route. Come by when you're ready. Also, I expect other agents to be there, but we can't rely on support until we know for sure. I haven't gotten a call yet from other agents, so I don't know if others are on the same mission or not. Anywho, I'll be waiting."

Walter smiled as he turned to leave. He walked through the headquarters building until he reached the car they were to take, a black SUV. Walter placed his large suitcase into the trunk, and climbed into the driver's seat. Within the next few moments, Walter brought a laptop from under the seat out, and began to plan their route, consulting information of where Daniel was seen last, or rather, where his mission sent him to.

Daniel Westfield:

As he went down the elevator, he got another message from whoever was screwing with him.

"You can try to run, Danny boy, but you can't hide. And we both know you can't run forever. Well, I do at least"

Now Daniel knew something was up. Something about himself. He turned off the cyber eye communications, so they could not track him. He would have done it earlier, but he wanted one more long message like that one, so he could analyze it with the previous. It was the second time he was referred to as Danny Boy. He had never heard that nickname from anyone else, but it stung of familiarity. Danny was a popular nickname for Daniel, so maybe it was just an attempt to manipulate him, or maybe...Daniel considered that it had something to do with him, before he was taken by the SWA. Before the mind wipe.

Unfortunately, this wasn't one of those fictional stories were if someone tells you something about memories that were erased you get that sting and then it comes flooding back. No, this was real life. The memories were gone for good. The sting was the closest he ever would get to remembering.

Another thing that the message said that supported this was the last sentence. It would indicate this person knows about the SWA and the Mind Wipe.

Of course, this could all be a lie in an attempt to manipulate him into investigating one thing when it was the other.

When the elevator stopped on the lobby level, he got off. He expected it would be mere minutes before other agents arrived. So he began to make his way towards the hotel exit. He would get a ride to this warehouse.

Of course, the warehouse might be a trap too. They have planned this out, and clearly they did their research on me. Yes, this is definantly a trap. So I will just have to go Anti-Trap.

Of course, his Anti Trap usually was code for explosives. People could plan traps for breaches, for thieves, for hackers. But it was hard to predict explosives. What they might do to any traps you set, how powerful they might be. Unless you somehow manage to control the exact amount of explosives used, the exact placement of where they will be, and what type is used, explosives were hard to predict. You also often don't know when they will be detonated either.

Daniel saw a taxi pull up near the hotel, looking for any new customer right as Daniel came out the front doors by a bus station. Daniel got onto a bus that would take him towards the warehouse, and the Taxi started to follow the bus.

Daniel might be a bit paranoid, but right now, paranoia was justified. And if he wanted to get to the bottom of this, he would need to work fast, before either side caught him, or worse.

Alice jumped up happily, nodding to her Handler. "I'll be out soon! I'll go grab my stuff." With that, Alice was off into the nearest building, where her dorm room was located. Once she arrived to the room, she looked around. She had tons of stuffed animals, toys and whatnot. It looked like a little girls room, but a look outside the window showed something like a military base. Alice grabbed her shoulder bag and threw some cloths, her music player and many poptarts from her secret stash under her bed. She felt ready enough.

After a search for the giant SUV, she found it sitting idle with Walter in the front seat. She opened the passenger door and struggled in her attempt to enter, but made it after a finally leap. Alice held onto the armrest as she closed the door and kicked off her shoes. It was a habit of hers to sit in cars cross legged. She thought she may have forgotten her weapons, but a quick check revealed she had them already in her shoulder bag. Good thing too, it would have been terrible if they had gotten there and she had left her instruments at home.

"Ready Captain," Alice saluted Walter. She placed her shoes on the floor neatly and her bag on top of them, then buckling herself in.

It hadn't taken Walter very long to plan a route. The specifications of Daniel's position and mission, last he was seen, were clear, and available. The rest of the time Walter had stayed alone in the van was spent quietly. Walter had lost his train of thought, and, in his wait for Alice, a dark look returned to Walter's face. He could already remember the horrors of war. Fighting wa not something Ealter enjoyed. If possible, he would avoid it. Well, that was probably why Walter was working with the SWA, to prevent more war. However, here Walter was, working with another child soldier.

"Ready Captain," Alice said as she saluted Walter. She placed her shoes on the floor neatly and her bag on top of them, then buckling herself in.

Walter snapped out of it. Alice had stepped in. He enjoyed her presence, watching as she sat down in the passenger's seat with her legs crossed. Walter had seen the moment where a child becomes a soldier, and to Walter, it was horrifying. Walter ad never seen the moment in himself, but maybe for him it happened too early to remember. Or maybe it had never happened. Maybe that was why Walter was so eager to become a scientist, rather than work as an agent, or assassin. Whatever the case, the fact that Alice was so much unlike most of the other cyborgs here really made him wonder if, even with conditioning, she hadn't lost who she was to war. Walter smiled, as he set the car on it's course for the apartment where Daniel was to fid his mark.

Alice

Alice may have felt like a dog sometimes with the urges to stick her head out of the window, but she couldn't be too wild. It always cause trouble for Walter when she was. So she simply pressed her face to the window and stared at the clouds.

"Oh!" Alice reached into her bag and handed Walter a pop tart package. "Just incase you get hungry, okay?"

It didn't take Alice long to distract herself with clouds and moving around in her seat like a monkey. Cars were just so much fun when no one was yelling at you. After she got comfy, she continued to stare at the sky. Alice remembered when she thought she was growing wings. She had been having dreams about growing wings and flying. So when her back hurt, she thought that she was going to sprout wings at anytime.

It only turned out to be faulty joints causing her distress. Of course she was disappointed, but she was also happy. Where would Alice go? She would probably have been hunted down and killed. That or experiments. The white coats would have way to much fun.

Flying seemed to nice to Alice. If she had they chance, one thing she would do before she retired was fly.

(So, is this still alive then?)

Daniel got off a block from his stop. The warehouse was close. But, he needed to re-supply first.

He still felt shaken, and it wasn't something he was used to feeling. For the first time, he felt targeted and hunted. It was not something he was used to. He worked solo perfectly fine, but even then, he had intel, ops, and supplies. And the one man he actually knew that he trusted more then anyone else was dead.

He had established several safe houses in multiple cities, and only a little less then half were registered by the agency. He walked up the stairs, and entered one of them after he unlocked the door. He locked it after he entered, and re supplied ammo for his guns, and explosives for general use. Then it occurred to him that the ballistics wouldn't match. Each gun made its own marks on each bullet, so if they tested it the gun would not match the wounds. He left that gun in a secure case in the Safe house, got changed quickly, and left.

He left via the fire escape into the alley, and made his way to the warehouse by hiding in crowds or using back alleys. When he made it to the warehouse, he knew it wouldn't be long before they managed to follow him here. He set up a breaching explosive, enough to get in, but not to make a loud noise or big light. Once that was done, he went in. There were a lot of empty shelves, crates, and junk. But there was this room inside, with the light on. He went over there, to see if anyone was inside.

There wasn't, however. There was a computer though. Daniel moved the mouse, re activating it. A video file, with audio, started to play as he looked around. It was a variety of things. Financial reports, employment papers, approval of allocation of Government resources, transit records, flight plans, power company reports. He did not see it at first, but then he realized this was all related to the Agency. Because he found some files, on his handler, on the others, on the director. And then, he found his handler.

"Patient's name is listed as Daniel Westfield..." Daniel looked back at the video playing. It was him, after having been operated on it seems. "...we managed to stabilize him. He survived, though I am not sure if he should have. He was injured, well, not sure by who or with what. Neither of his parents are reachable, I fear whatever to him happened to them, possibly worse. Anyways, seeing as he hasn't fallen into a coma, I am calling the Social Welfare Agency. This case is just the thing they would handle, that is for sure..."

He could hear his own voice in the background, moaning. "He must be strong. He is awake already..."

Daniel wasn't sure what to think. This data was supposed to be scrubbed, it shouldn't exist. But here it was, a copy of it saved. Daniel felt like this was familiar, but there was this blank feeling combined with a migraine. Whoever was behind this had something big planned, and they were confident if they were showing their hand like this. However, Daniel got distracted again when another video started to play.

"Hey Danny, remember me?"

"Michael! Your back from college!"

The video camera was focused on Daniel, but Daniel ran towards this Michael. It appeared to be him holding the video. "Say Hello to mom. I plan to send this video to her".

"Hiiiii moooom!"

"Alright Daniel, let me make us both a snack. Is dad home?"

"Not yet. And nachos, please!"

The video ended. What was on the computer now was a certificate of death for Daniel Westfield. A voice was also playing from the computer now. "So tell me, what keeps you loyal to these people? The fact they saved your life? After all, you did mysteriously arrive at the hospital, with no witnesses how, and your injuries perfect for the SWA? Seems rather suspicious, I would say. And hiding you from your family. Tell me, why do you think they took your memories, as well? Why isolate you from the people you belong with? The answer is simple, to them you are a tool, nothing more. Now, they will see you as a liability. So they will discard you, end your life, and make it look like you died in that hospital room like they faked. You can't go to the media, not with what you have done. You can't return to the government, they will kill you to keep themselves safe. You have two options. Find your family, starting with your brother because he is closest, or work for us and let us protect you, and your family. The first option will almost certainly lead to us anyways, because they will see them just as much of a risk as you".

Daniel wasn't sure what to do. He was still processing everything. He looked back at the warehouse main room, then at the computer. "Why me?"

"You were sent on this mission".

"But why set me up if you wanted to help me?"

"Because..." The computer monitor switched to a traffic camera. He could make out a man and a girl in the vehicle. "The SWA has sent Alice after you. An assassin. If we had simply asked you, you might have not believed us. Your brother is currently in the city for a meeting. You see, after he was done with the army, he went to college, and after your death, strived to become great in your name. He is currently making massive amounts of money, and is planning to build the Danny Westfield Memorial Tower, just for you. He truly is a great brother, and you two were robbed of each other. So, are you going to let Alice kill you, or are you going to re-unite with your brother. They can't kill your brother in public, not with a government registered vehicle or with a government officer, even if his job isn't quite what people think. He is at Durrenbell Tower. You could wait for him in the lobby".

Daniel wasn't sure what to do. He knew he was being played like a piano. No way someone would do what they have done for the right reasons. But his brother had answers, and the truth would be a lot easy to find if they talked, he believed.

He just also knew this was quite obviously a trap. He was a mouse in a maze with a cat, and they controlled the walls.
