It was mid afternoon, the sun was starting to make its decent into the west as Haley walked down the sidewalk. She had just unpacked her last box of things yesterday, and had already been working in the town for about a week now. This was her first day where she didn't have to work and she had the chance to finally explore her new hometown. At the thought of exploration, Haley couldn't help but to grin excitedly. All of the stress that was associated with finding a job and a place to live, along with moving expenses and bills that she would have to pay were finally starting to matter less. The town was quaint, but not too small. The downtown seemed to always have a hustle and bustle of foot traffic as well as road traffic, except not enough to have constant honking of cars. Shops lined the streets, one after another with tiny alleys occasionally splitting up the long mass of buildings. It seemed to go on this way as far as the eye could see, which meant if one wanted to explore every place it would take longer than a day.

Haley started to peer into the shops as she walked, seeing a small little coffee shop where people sat at tables and talked with others, or sat alone working on their laptops. It was a few stores of clothing after that until she came across a pet store. But what struck her about the pet store wasn't that there were cute little animals in the windows, but rather images of humanoid animals. She stopped walking and stared at the posters in awe, knowing she hadn't seen anything like them before. Her eyes wandered to the bottom of one of the posters showing the price and how they were on sale today. Tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear, she decided that it wouldn't hurt to look. She knew she could use the company of a pet in her apartment, since she always found herself bored out of her mind after a day at work. She tugged open the glass door of the store, hearing the small jingle of bells as she did so. Her eyes wandered around the lobby, noticing there were some people playing with small kittens and puppies in small cubicles off to the sides.

She smiled a little, feeling the warm sensation that animals brought to her, and started towards the desk at the back of the store where. A woman stood with a huge grin on her face, her eyes locked on the redhead who'd just walked in. Haley's attention shifted from her to just behind the woman, where a large windowed door was. Down a long stretch of hallway, she could see there were more open rooms and other families looking around, she could only assume that it was there that the humanoid pets were. Haley's distraction had been strong enough to make her bump into the counter just in front of the woman. She jumped a little with a small embarrassed laugh, and met her gaze with the woman.

"Hi, what can I help you with today?" She asked in a peppy tone that seemed a little forced. She must have been working a long day, and was ready to go home. Haley nodded absentmindedly before licking her lips and taking in a breath of air.

"I saw your poster for the humanoid pets. I'm new to the area, and thought I would just come in and see what they looked like." Haley responded, her gaze had moved back to the windowed door and down the hallway. From where she stood, she couldn't see much but just enough to make her want to leap over the counter and wander down there. To woman stepped in front of her view, and smiled.

"Right this way." She said and pointed to a broken section of counter, that allowed one to pass through. As she pointed she moved towards the door. Haley nodded, walking rather quickly behind the counter, now dying to see what was in the back rooms. The woman opened the door, and stepped in to hold it open. "Let us know if you need anything." The woman finished as Haley made her way in. Her fast paced slowed to one of a snail as her eyes scoped out everything in view. She was taking in every bit of detail as possible as hear heart pounded in her chest. She was excited to see this new kind of pet, but at the same time, the idea was so new to her it made her nervous.

It had been a long day thusfar for the raven, but as expected, he hadn't been selected by anyone to bring home. No child-rearing family would even consider letting their precious spawn anywhere near his inky black form. No dainty women, no elderly couples, widows or widowers. Everyone wanted something soft and cuddly. Something utterly adorable they could hug and groom and show off with pride.

Bran was none of these things, and he expected another day would pass him by, him sitting in his room. It would be normal, except like all his fellow 'pets', the front of the room was entirely cage-like, bars not unlike a prison. There were human sized doors and smaller upward sliding 'doggy' doors for food, water, and toys. Each had locks on them. He wasn't entirely sure if his other housemates had locks on them, but his certainly did.

The inside of his room was fairly standard. A slightly raised sling style pet bed, good for air flow and supportive with strong, chew-resistant material, and easy to clean. A large bowl of both fresh water and food. A drain in the rear center of the tile floor, easing the cleaning process. For decoration and entertainment, he was provided with a log, large tree branches attatched to the wall, some dangling rope with blocks and beads, and a cuttlebone. In one corner at the very back, one could make out a box with newspaper in it, some on the edges partially shredded. It was cleaned daily to minimize the smell. Good thing too, or Bran would be unruly and unhappy.

Hearing the door to his hallway open for what was precisely the seventeenth time that day, Bran debated about looking up from his perch. He honestly didn't see the point. Besides, he had a headache from a bunch of screaming children who had earlier disturbed his afternoon nap, which incidentally he was trying to resume.

The meows, barks, whines, chirps, and one whinney (a centaur, usually picked out by women as a humanoid pet) echoed throughout the hall at the arrival of a new human. Bran could feel his headache grow worse, a throbbing in his head. Tucking his face into his feathers, he tried to drown them out, but to no avail.

From outside, he resembled a large pile of midnight black feathers perched on a branch, his dark hair easily blending in. His wings curled around his body, he tried to get comfortable in hopes of sleeping off this headache.

Haley walked slowly past a few empty spaces, before seeing one for the first time. It was a humanoid dog, similar to the one that was advertised on the poster outside the store. She glanced at it for a moment before losing interest and walking further down the hall. Haley loved cute and fluffy animals that would cuddle. But what she loved more were the types that seemed to catch your eye. As she made her way to the next stall, what she saw definitely caught her eye. Still a little apprehensive about this new kind of pet, she froze and stared up at the dark mass that was perched in a large branch.

She looked like a deer in headlights almost, but she wasn't necessarily scared. Rather, she was more than just interested. She looked up at it for a little while longer before she looked around the rest of the cage. From what she gathered, she couldn't seem to figure out what it was. But lo and behold, the woman that had shown her to the back rooms appeared next to her. Haley jumped a little turning to look at the woman who tucked her hands neatly behind her back and smiled up at the dark figure in the branch.

"This one has been here for a little while now. Seems to not be the type of pet a child would want. Do you have children?" The woman started as she knocked on the metal bars a little to stir the raven's attention. Haley shook her head no, keeping her eyes on the raven with a small frown at how to woman seemed to be more focused on pitching her a sale. "Well, he's up for seven hundred. But we can throw in a free little something with it." She said as the woman glanced back over at Haley.

Just as Bran thought he'd finally get some well-deserved rest, the sound of his cage bars being drummed interrupted his attempts at sleeping. Looking up with an indignant sqwak, blue-grey eyes glared at whoever interrupted his rest. Seeing the familiar store lady, he ruffled his feathers in agitation, making himself look bigger. She irritated him. He should have known it was her.

Beside her was a red haired woman who was staring blatantly at him. The pale face watched her silently, calculating what he saw. Ordinarily, he would be ready by now to start letting out some of his various chirps, sqwaks and whistles. He'd then probably follow it up with banging his toys around, flapping his wings, and approaching the customer suddenly. He loved making a scene, especially in front of the sales lady. But today, he was just not interested. His head was in too much pain to be bothered to care.

"Oh? That's strange. He's never been quiet in front of a customer before. He seems to like you." commented the woman, smiling at Haley. "He gets his wings trimmed every two weeks to keep him from flying. He is free of any feather mites, and he will eat just about anything. He bathes once a week." She went on to explain, trying not to react to the raven. Turning her back to the animal, she smiled at Haley, awaiting her comments.

As the raven moved to ruffle his feathers and make himself look bigger, Haley couldn't help but to step back and let her eyes widen. Her hand unconsciously lifted to cover her mouth as if she was afraid. Except she wasn't, she was in awe. When the raven focused on her, Haley's hand fell back down at her side as she stared back with an interested expression. She smiled a little after a moment, and looked over at the woman. She chimed in almost immediately as Haley looked at her. "Oh? That's strange. He's never been quiet in front of a customer before. He seems to like you." Haley nodded at the woman's remark, not really listening to her but rather picturing what it would be like to care for a pet like this one. It was hard to even imagine to say the least.

Snapping back to reality, she looked back up at the raven. "He's beautiful," she said in a soft voice as a smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. "He gets his wings trimmed every two weeks to keep him from flying. He is free of any parasites or mites, and he will eat just about anything. He bathes once a week." Haley nodded once again, only to find herself moving closer to the bars once again, except this time closer. One of her hands gripped the bar as she kept her stare on the raven. Letting out a tiny whistle, she watched him curiously to see how he would react.

"What do you think, should I give you some time to look?" The saleswoman asked, but Haley flat out ignored her. She was almost in a trance over this creature. He was nothing like she had ever seen before, and could only imaging what it would look like to see him fly. Or to see him in a happier habitat that this one at least. Imagining him in her apartment was a whole different story, one that seemed so abstract she had to shake the thought from her head.

Seeing the awe on Haley's face, the saleswoman smiled, feeling a wave of triumph. She knew that look oh too well. She would sell the bird and get a comission off of him as well. She hadn't expected the raven of all things wound get picked, but she wasn't complaining. He was a handful.

Bran wondered if the human was scared of him, but despite her initial wide-eyed, silent gasp at seeing his face, she moved closer. Eyes fixed on her like a hawk, the raven watched as the human gripped the bars of his cage- something no one had done after his first day, and she continued to watch him, even murmuring softly to herself.

Upon hearing a whistle, Bran tilted his head to the side, curiousity in his eyes. After a second, he mimicked the whistle perfectly, looking quite pleased with himself.

"He's intelligent, just like a regular raven. They can learn to mimic human speech." explained the saleswoman, noting the exchange between bird and woman.

After a moment's debate, Bran shifted, leaning on one foot then the other. Time to test her. Leaning forward, he spread his wings and glided downward, landing in front of the human directly. The saleslady flinched and gasped, pulling away as she always did, much to her charign. Bran ignored her this time, eyes riveted on the customer.

Now that his body was visible, one could see he looked human in body, except he was covered in feathers from head to toe. His feet were talons, and bare of feathers like a normal bird. The feathers were thinner on his hands, each of wich was equipped with a handfull of dark, sharp clawlike nails.

At the sound of him mimicking her whistle, Haley grinned. She was more than interested now. All the thoughts of what she would even do with him disappeared, as she was captivated by the moment. "He's intelligent, just like a regular raven. They can learn to mimic human speech." Haley didn't even bother responding to the woman anymore, as she had barely even heard what the saleswoman had said in the first place. She didn't really care what the woman had to say anymore, but rather what was going on with the raven that was before her. She watched as the raven shifted feet, and leaned forward. She wondered if he was about to move.

Her question was soon answered as he swept down and landed right in front of her. A whiff of air rustled the strands of hair that framed her face, but Haley stayed unmoving. Her grip on the bar however, loosened only for her hand to reach out into the cage towards him. She felt just a little bit of his feathers, soft to the touch before her eyes flicked up to meet his. They stayed there for a moment, her eyes big as she took his sight in. Then they moved to give him a once-over, and as her eyes made their way all the way back up to his face a grin was plastered across her cheeks.

"Hello there." She said in an excited voice, her hand moving back to grip the bar. She stopped for a moment and looked at the saleswoman, finally paying attention to her. "I'll take him." She said in a quick voice, thinking to herself that she was glad she had saved up a good portion of money. This was going to put a small dent in her account, but she knew it was worth it.

Having expected the human to jump back and freak out at his sudden approach, Bran was surprised when the young woman reached inside his cage to pet his feathers. He went still, wide eyed as he let out a startled chirp. She wasn't rough at all, just barely grazing him, but he felt it. His eyes watched hers as she stared into his sharp gaze, another new response. Interesting human.

Her voice elicted another whistle, his own this time. Head cocked to the side in wonder, the male reached a hand out to slowly, gingerly tap the human's hand. He pulled back quickly, unsure if she would retaliate.

"Wonderful! Would you be wanting to have him microchipped for identification and security purposes? As part of our special, you can pick out one toy for free to go along with your new pet." said the saleswoman with a delighted clap of her hands. Fetching a slipleash, she approached the cage with her keys.

Bran fluffed himself up again in agitation, eyes glaring at the saleswoman. As quickly as she could, the lady opened the door and tossed the leash over his head, earning a sqwak of dissapproval.

Haley smiled as he touched her hand, and in response she nodded at him a little. "Time to get you out of this place!" She laughed a little. Her attention was soon focused on the woman. "Wonderful! Would you be wanting to have him microchipped for identification and security purposes? As part of our special, you can pick out one toy for free to go along with your new pet." Haley took it all in slowly, before glancing back at the raven.

"How much extra is the microchip?" She started, as she stepped back from the woman when she pulled out the slipleash. She glanced once again at the raven. She had no idea what kind of toy he would want. She would pick a few, and let him choose, she decided as the woman moved into the cage and placed the slipleash around his neck. She frowned at the sight and how he didn't like it, but she didn't really have a choice.

As soon as Haley was in closer proximity to the raven, she couldn't help but to steal another touch on his feathers. It was near his arm, and her hand slid along with the feathers gently. She couldn't believe how soft his feathers were and she smiled a little. Her eyes moved to look back up at the raven, studying his gaze, she gave him a little wink. Unsure that he would interpret it, she moved her attention to the end of the hallway from whence she came.

"Twenty dollars for a microchip. It only takes a few minutes." Said the saleslady, leading the annoyed raven from his room. If she moved in a way he disliked, the bird sqwaked at her. At one point, he took part of the leash that dangled in between him and the woman into his mouth, tugging back. Clearly the saleswoman was having trouble with the raven. She sighed as the other animals began to chatter loudly at seeing one of them led out.

"What? You want her to hold you? Oh, fine then! No tugging!" she scolded the black bird, holding the end of the leash out to Haley, feeling her irritation at Bran rise.

Bran for his part, looked rather smug. Quirking his head at Haley's wink and her touching of his feathers, he let out a shrill chirp, but otherwise made no threatening moves against the human, simply watching her in uncertain curiousity. Her smile was reassuring, and at her unthreatening body language and voice, he grinned right back, mimicking the girl as the lady led them back out to the main part of the store.

"Twenty dollars for a microchip. It only takes a few minutes." Haley nodded at the price, knowing that it would be best to be safer than sorry. "I'll do the microchip." She said with a small smile at the saleswoman. When the leash was extended out to her, she took it without a second thought and started to lead him over to the toy section of the front of the store. She stopped just in front of an array of colorful, fun looking toys, and looked at the raven. Extending her hand out towards the toys, she lifted an orange rope that had a few dangling blocks and bells from it. Extending it towards him with question of whether he liked it or not, she wondered if he would respond. Haley scanned the shelves more, looking for other items that may be of interest. Her hand on the leash loosened, her grip gentle in order to give him as much slack as possible.

The saleswoman took out a case behind the counter, withdrawing a microchip scanner and a microchip needle, then opening up a program on the computer. She had a form to fill out for the customer when she was ready to pay and finalize everything.

Bran followed Haley to the bright display of toys. Noisy ones, thick ones, dangly ones, soft ones, edible ones, wood ones, all sorts. Letting out a whistle, his eyes turned back to the human as she offered him one as a possibility. Picking it up, he examined it, grinning for all the world like a cheshire cat. Bells huh? Bells were fun..and he wondered if she had any idea how annoying he could be with them.

Deciding this was good, he held one end of the long rope in his mouth, obviously in better spirits than before. It was a nice sturdy, thick rope toy, with plenty of knots, blocks, and of course, bells.

"If you'd be willing to fill out your information, we can get you all set." said the saleswoman, watching from behind the counter. Bran held the toy in his hands once more, letting his face be free to scowl and glare at the irritating lady.

Haley couldn't help but to smile warmly as he took the toy in his mouth approvingly. After a small moment, Haley looked over towards the counter to see paperwork just in front of the woman. She took the raven over towards the counter, stopping just at the edge before looking back at her new companion. She looked at the toy, stuck out a hand and pointed at the counter. "I need to pay for that." She said in a warm-hearted voice, another smile at her lips. She watched him for a moment before taking another glance back at the counter covered in paperwork.

"If you'd be willing to fill out your information, we can get you all set." The saleswoman spoke, distracting her from the raven only briefly. She picked up a pen from the counter, and started to fill out the paperwork. She realized how much she had just gotten into as she finished off the paperwork, and she let out a small sigh of worry. She wasn't sure how she was going to handle him while she was working, because there was no way she could bring him with her… could she? As the thought crossed her mind, she finished off signing her name and sliding the papers towards the saleswoman.

Unconsciously, Haley pulled her wallet from the small brown purse that hung on one shoulder. She slid her credit card from the slot it belonged in, sending a sideways glance at the raven once again. "Hmmm… what to call you." She said as she tapped the pen against her closed lips, pondering.

"No need, the toy is free with your purchase." explained the woman as she entered the owner information into the computer, scanning the chip in the needle with a scanner attatched to the computer before connecting the information. A few more clicks, and a copy of the paperwork was printed out, along with the microchip information sent off to the humane society database, where they would no longer have control of it. "Now for the microchip, and you'll be all set."

Uncapping the needle, the woman came out from behind the counter, nodding at another employee. The assistant held Bran's arms still, earning an angry sqwak as the needle was swiftly pierced into his upper arm, his deltoid it seemed. Pulling away as soon as the chip was placed, they scanned him with the reader to ensure it was correct. With a beep, the machine read the ID number, and they confirmed it with the papers and the computer that the chip inside his arm matched the new record.

Bran practically hissed at the two who had violated his arm, glaring fiercely. Stupid! He had half a mind to claw them in the face. He didn't exactly want his new human leaving him there with them though.

"He doesn't seem to have a set name..half of the staff calls him Merle, the other half call him Bran, and some call him both. They both mean the same thing though..." remarked the saleslady as she printed out a reciept, one to sign, another to keep.

Haley watched as the woman injected him, cringing as the needle made contact. She was never one for needles, that was for sure. But soon enough it was done and over with and she send a reassuring smile to Bran. Haley moved over to him, taking the slipleash off of him and looking at a leash she had purchased along with various other items. She wasn't sure if he would just follow along with her, or if she had to put a leash on him. Unsure, Haley looked at the saleswoman for a moment before taking out a collar. She looked at the collar, then at Bran, frowning a little. She wasn't the biggest fan of collars and leashes, but she knew sometimes they were needed.

"He doesn't seem to have a set name..half of the staff calls him Merle, the other half call him Bran, and some call him both. They both mean the same thing though…" Haley's face twisted in contemplation, before smiling once again.

"Bran it is then." She said as she moved her attention back to the collar in her hand. For once she was nervous. Seeing the way he had reacted to the saleswoman throughout the entire time she had been in the store made her uncomfortable. She didn't want to get on his bad side, but at the same time she wanted to ensure his safety out in public. Reaching to put the collar around his neck, she shoved all other thoughts aside and made sure to stay assertive. "This is only temporary!" She said as she slipped it around his neck and started to clip it. She knew his wings were clipped, but she didn't know how well he could run.

She also had no idea of what his intentions may be once they were outside. No way in hell was she going to be alone anymore, that was for sure. Of course, leaving him alone in the house will be the biggest test. She frowned at the thought, knowing that her expressions must have shown all of the thinking she was going through. Someone could easily think she was going insane. Haley shook her head focusing back on the collar and its clip.

"Were you hoping to get that as well?" asked the lady, indicating the leash and collar. She hovered her hand over her keys, ready to punch in more numbers if needed. She would have to make a separate reciept and charge, having already completed the transaction. She pulled her hand away. "Nevermind, you can keep those, our compliments." She didn't really want to ring up another purchase, and besides, she was just glad the bird would be gone.

Bran sqwaked at the collar, looking annoyed. He didn't retaliate in any threatening manner, simply ruffling his feathers in displeasure. The raven frowned, eyes watching the human. She had been uneasy a moment before, and he could feel her hesitation. Good, know that he was not to be trifled with. He didn't pull away from her, scowling his only protest. If one were to try and describe it, it would seem as though he were pouting.

Haley nodded at the woman, now focused on taking Bran home. That would be an adventure in itself! She started towards the door, making sure there was a good amount of slack on the leash as she started to push the door open and start down the sidewalk from the direction she had just recently come from. It was still nice out, although it was much darker. She had been in there a while! Looking at her watch she frowned, realizing it was already dinner time. She would have to make some food. Enough for two. The thought made her smile.

Haley walked slowly, making sure that she wouldn't tug on his leash. She stayed that way, focusing on making her way up the two blocks to her apartment. After a few minutes, they arrived at an apartment tucked in the center of a bunch of identical ones. She walked up the couple of steps and started to unlock the door. Her apartment was fortunately on the first floor, unlike others that had to mike a five or six story hike to their place.

Stepping inside and wandering down to the end of a hallway, on the left side was a small little red welcome mat and a black door. She unlocked this one as well, before turning and removing the collar and leash from Bran. "Home sweet home!" She said excitedly as she moved to let him walk in first. The door led in to the living room which had two three-person couches and a television with red and orange colored carpet. It was spacious, making it look like she didn't have that much stuff. But by the television was shelves upon shelves of books and movies.

Bran and his papers and reciepts were now out of the store, the bird cocking his head and looking around, studying his surroundings. He lingered occassionally, going slowly so he could experience the outdoors. This was kinda nice, very big world out there.

He let out a trilling chirp as he saw Haley withdraw her keys. He reached for them, the shiny objects eye-catching and visually appealing. She kept them out of his reach for now, and he simply followed to a door further in.

Upon feeling the collar released from his neck, Bran whistled in delight, going in circles around the human before speeding into her apartment, only to crash unceremoniously into a couch. Squaking at the offending object, he fluffed up in defence, glaring at it warily for a few moments before getting back up. The colors were certainly to his liking, and Bran scuttled around the carpet in facination. He poked at it, then poked the tv screen, chirping.

Haley couldn't help but to laugh at his reaction to her furniture. Smiling, she set her keys in a small drawer of a little dresser that was right at the entrance of the apartment. She felt her stomach growl, and immediately after pulling off her shoes she made her way to the kitchen. Stopping just before the fridge she realized she would probably have to set up a lot of stuff for this new pet. She would need a litter box of some sort… leaving the kitchen, she crossed the living room and over to a door that led down to the basement. She disappeared momentarily only to come back up with a long but somewhat shallow bin and some newspaper.

Making her way once again across the living room, she headed into the bathroom which was just down the hall from the kitchen and set up the two items in a space just in the corner of the bathroom. After a moment, she nodded to herself before calling out a small whistle, hoping it would summon Bran. It was something she hoped would work to get his attention. Leaning against the bathroom counter, she waited for a moment.

Bran grew bored of the television, thankfully not having found the buttons thusfar. Making his way across the carpet, he poked the couch insted, it's softness pleasing to him. Regardless, he deemed the house in need of more exploring. Making his way to the kitchen, he opened the large white box the human had stood before, opening the fridge and letting out a sqwuack at the sudden chill. He glared at the offending device, swiping a drink container out of the fridge in annoyance before letting it fall shut, the door unable to close completely due to the impeding containor.

He perked up upon hearing the whistle, repeating it back as he followed the sound to the source. It was a smooth room, and a strange white seat looking device sat in one part of it. Chirping in confusion, Bran approached the human, grinning nonetheless. This was a big enviornment, he much preferred it to the pet shop. Letting out another whistle, he then followed it up with a meow, something he'd heard often at the pet shop.
