Guy Bonnet

Corporal in the 9th Laufland Fusiliers

0 · 211 views · located in Earth

a character in “Hell in the Trenches”, as played by Iceheart

Description

Guy stands six feet even - a good height for a boy who has grown up on less than two thousand calories per day. He is thin, like all his peers, but strong despite it. His eyes are blue and small, while his hair is sandy, shorn around the ears and neck, and swept back on top with whatever grease he can find. He has a longish face with high, prominent cheekbones, a thin bony ridge of a nose, and a narrow slash of a mouth, giving him a perpetually curious expression. A scar splits his right eyebrow: he was shot with a small-caliber pistol, and the bullet deflected off his skull.

Personality

Guy grew up poor, working in a textile mile, and learned early, even before he was conscripted into the army, that the only way to survive in a hard world is to be harder; that in tight spots, aggression will carry you through when caution will kill you. He is brash, overconfident, and vaingloriously brave. Despite his tendency to rush into trouble unprepared, he is a ruthless taskmaster, as demanding of himself as he is his men, and has a reputation for always accomplishing the mission. Officers see him as a valuable, if somewhat unstable, man to have around, and good junior NCO material.

During his downtime, however, he is a glutton and overindulges in tobacco, alcohol, food, and literally everything else he can lay hands on. He smokes constantly, and regularly runs out of cigarettes and has to beg tobacco off those around him. He looks out for himself, and a friend or two, and the devil take everyone else. He has a cruel, cynical wit, and enjoys mocking those around him: friend, stranger, and enemy alike, and will do so at any opportunity, denegrating their race, sex, and family history. This is less because he is a bigot, and more because he loves to fight, and hopes to provoke a brawl. Despite his caustic manner, he can be fairly charismatic when he chooses. Men follow him less because of the beauty of his words, and more because of his raw, savage intensity.

Equipment

Guy carries a twelve-gauge shotgun, loaded with double-aught buckshot. He keeps a knife tied to his leg, and a field-modified fighting hatchet with a spike ground into the back strapped to the side of his pack.

History

Guy doesn't know his father's name, nor does his mother, who was 16 years old when he was born. She was a dirt-poor textile worker, pretty but sad and terribly lonely, and spent most of her pay on drink. By the time Guy was four he was working in the mill, scurrying under the great machines and plucking lint from the still-operating machinery, risking dismemberment on a daily basis. When he was nine, his mother took up with an overseer, a cruel bastard who beat him - and all the other children in the mill - with a brass-studded belt. When he was fourteen, he strangled his stepfather to death with his belt and ran off to join the army. As a volunteer, he has certain benefits - namely better pay and a higher chance for promotion - but he will serve an eighteen-year term, with no exceptions. He knows that he will die in the army, but he sees it as a fair bargain; he's comfortable with the army's discipline, he gets better food than civilians, and he rather enjoys the work.
