Personality

Daiyu is quiet, choosing to speak only when spoken to or when she needs to correct the children. Even then, if she can she prefers a gesture rather than her voice. She speaks Chinese and English, doing both well. Daiyu is calm, angering very rarely, crying hardly ever and smiling is equally as rare.

She enjoys the children and taking care of them. Daiyu can sing and her voice is soft and sweet. Occassionally the sound of Chinese lullabies, song softly will float out of their wagon.

Equipment

Daiyu has very little besides the clothes on her back. The rest, she realies on the Porter's for. She has a small ornate hair comb from her mother that she wears all the time. It is her most prized posession.

She can sew, mend clothes and has a steady hand for embroidery.

History

Daiyu came from China with her family was she was just four years old. Her father and two older brothers went to work for the railroad. Her mother and Daiyu went to live in a well off rancher's homestead. Her mother cooked and cleaned. Daiyu did her best to help where she could. When she was seven, one of her brothers was killed in an explosion while trying to open a mountainside for the railway. By thirteen, Daiyu was helping in the household with the cleaning and minding of the children. Her other brother and her father continued to hlep lay the railway.

When she was seventeen, the household was thrown into disarray as the rancher was killed during a cattle drive and a rival rancher took the cattle. There was talk to foul play in the death but no one could prove anything. Daiyu was seperated from her mother and sent to work in the new household. The Thompson's took her in and made Daiyu the nanny of the three youngest of the children. The Thompson's had seven children in total. Mark (24), Annette (22), Brian (21), Hector (18), Maybelle (14), Jillian (11) and Lucas (8). Mark and Annette were both married and out of the house. Brian was engaged to be married. Daiyu was happy in the household. They treated her well.

A year after she came to live with them, Hector became engaged. This new girl took an instant dislike to Daiyu. Bethany Myers was convinced that something unseemly was occuring between Hector and Daiyu. The man had never laid a hand on her and nothing had every occurred but the girl's jealousy knew no reason. She embarked to get rid of Daiyu. She would trip her, knock things over and blame Daiyu for being clumsy, a large fit was thrown when tea was spilled on Bethany's dress; clearly Daiyu's fault. While most of the Thompson's knew it was not Daiyu, Mrs Thompson so adored Bethany and the match between her and Hector that she sent Daiyu from her household.

For two years, Daiyu has worked for Nathan Porter and his family of four. The Porter's recently joined up with the caravan, taking Daiyu with them. Mr. Porter, in the business of textiles was hoping to find a new place to set up shop or strike it rich, whichever comes first. Mrs Porter, is overdrawn and longs for a life of settling down and has become a bit bitter with her husband's new ventures taking them away from everything they ever knew. Daiyu helps Melanie Porter with the children, mending and cooking. The Porters are not mean people but they do not treat Daiyu as well as the Thompson's had. She did not want to travel with them but given she had no real choice she bears it with a stoic calm.

The Porters are:
Nathan
Melanie
Helen
Patrick

Nathan hit the ground with a thud, blood pouring from the wounds on his neck and face. His life slipped away as the red fluid pooled around him.

Daiyu from her hiding place watched Jesse hit Nathan and she gasped, her hands going to her mouth as the man hit the ground. Her heart pounded in chest as she waited to see if Nathan was still alive or if the things would come for her. Jesse, the man that had saved her earlier was one of the creatures too.

Nathan pushed himself to stand. He was stiff and slow but eventually he made his way to his feet. He looked at Jesse, understanding in his eyes. As a simple man he could do nothing to fight the brave or the others but now, now there was a chance.

Anticipation hung heavy in the air. There was no sounds, no wind as if the world around them knew a fight was coming.

Daiyu's hands remained on her mouth, holding in her exclamation of surprise and terror as she watched Nathan stand again. He and Jesse were planning to fight the brave and his warriors. It was madness. She swallowed and reached for a rock, readying herself.

Nathan watched Jesse change. He knew that he too could do that and knew it was going to be painful. Losing his family had been worse, this was just physical pain. What more did he have to lose? His life, that was already gone every part of it.

With a breath in and look of acceptance in his eyes, Nathan allowed his body to change. It was as painful as it looked and as Nathan expected. Bones cracked and grew, he cried out in pain an claws formed and all his limbs extended themselves.

Finally, the change was complete and the now beast thing that Nathan was stood beside Jesse, ready to face the two warriors.

From her hiding place Daiyu ducked her head down. She was unable to watch the two men change into the creatures. She had seen them as men and now they were in agony and changing their bodies to no longer be human. Daiyu was scared and saddened.

When the cries ceased, she poked her head up to look over the wreckage of the wagon. She saw them. Two on one side and two a distance away. There was to be a battle and death was the only accepted fate. Daiyu wished she had a place to hide, a place to go but nothing was close and she would die of starvation or exposure or even from an animal before she found people again. Not only that, she knew that no one would simply accept a chinese woman walking into a town alone. Daiyu would be shunned and left to die.

She picked up a rock and waited. "Die now, or die later but at least I die fighting..." She watched and waited for the men to begin, unsure how this all worked.

The creature Nathan snarled, waiting to unleash his anger in battle.

As Jesse and White Owl began to fight, rolling around like dogs in the dirt, Nathan attacked the other creature.

Daiyu watched. The noise was intense, snarling and barking but there was little more damage than some bites. "They are no better than animals" Daiyu frowned. All the bloodshed, all the chaos and for what, so that they could roll in dirt like feral dogs? "No, this will not stand." Daiyu stood, her form appearing from behind the broken wagon. They were not far from her and so she hurled the first large rock that was in her hand.

The first hit Nathan in the shoulder. The second smacked off of White Owl's leg. Eventually the four creatures were pelted with a stedy barrage of rocks. Some were smaller, doing nothing more than glancing off the tough hides. Some of the larger ones hit them hard. She knew she wouldn't be able to kill them but they weren't exactly killing each other so what did it matter.

Nathan took a rock to the back of his beast like head. The next hit Jesse. Nathan turned to where the asian girl was standing, throwing her rocks. He was torn. To attack the female or keep at the other creature. He clawed at the beast and was met with a claw to his face. Another rock pelted the other brave-now creature, hitting it square in the maw as it came at Nathan, intending to bite him. The beast reeled backwards and Nathan turned snarling at Daiyu.

She challenged him with a look, "He will kill you if you don't get on with it." Her voice was a little cold. She was tired, dirty and had nothing left to lose. Nathan lunged at the other beast, his claw digging into the flesh of its shoulder. The wounded creature howled. Daiyu turned her rocks on Jesse and White Owl. She was angry that they had used her and to what purpose? The wagons were coming here anyway, they could have just killed her when they had the chance but no, terror was their only goal and it infuriated her to be used like that.

Another howl went up but it was unclear if it was from Nathan or the brave. The two were locked, jaws gripping the other's neck.

Nathan's jaws locked down on the other beast's throat. At the same time, pain ripped through his body. The brave took a chunk out of his neck. It wouldn't be long before he was dead but he felt proud knowing in the end he was not a coward, not the coward who had left a girl to die as the camp took off, not a coward who had never been able to really stand up to his wife.

Nathan gripped the brave's shoulders and keeping his teeth clenched, ripped at the man's neck. He pushed the brave away and took a hunk of his throat as the two bodies seperated. Both fell heavily to the ground. Blood soaked into the dirt as their life left them.

Daiyu watched as the thing that had once been Nathan died, the other creature dying a short distance away from him. And so there remained the two. Daiyu began to search through the remains of the wagon, hoping to find a rifle. There was none here. She spotted another wagon and ran quickly to it. There, after some searching she found a rifle. Running, balancing the thing on her arms she went back to her hiding spot. She was ready now.

Daiyu aimed the gun. If they finished the fight and whichever one lived chose to come at her she would be ready to fire at it before it killed her. Her hands shook ever so slightly as she watched the beast roll in the dirt again.

Daiyu's mouth went dry as the brave stood, leaving the beast that was Jesse lying on the ground. He moved towards her, shifting into his human form as he did so. Her hands shook a little more. "Stop. I have done nothing to you." Her eyes began to fill with tears of fear.

Daiyu pulled the trigger of the rifle. The shot ripped through the air. The gun recoiled into her shoulder, throwing her to the ground with a cry of pain.

She didn't see the bullet strike White Owl in the shoulder. She had been able to keep the gun steady enough that the shot was true. The bullet ripped through him. Entering just below his collar bone on the right side and exiting out the back. Clean shot through and through. The brave dropped to a knee clutching his shoulder.

Daiyu writhed on the ground. The rifle had bounced back into her left shoulder. She was sure it was dislocated. The pain was excurtiating. The gun lay on the ground beside her now. Daiyu rolled to her knees, hugging her shoulder as she stood. Clenching her eyes shut in pain she reached to grab the rifle. She knew that her only chance was to grab the gun and have it ready, she was going to die but she would do it fighting. Slowly, rifle in hand Daiyu stood and turned to face whatever may come at her.

White-Owl's walk toward the young Asian woman was full of bloodthirsty intent, reaching out his hands as he came upon her position. "You must die, no one must know of the danger which await them here. We will not stop until we wipe all foreigners from our lands. I am sorry but you must also suffer death."

Daiyu's shoulder hurt but she couldn't just stand there and let him attack her. Gritting her teeth Daiyu shot him again. She had no idea where it hit him but she knew from the sound he made that it had. She hit the ground with a thud, the rifle falling from her hand and sliding away from her in the dirt.

She scrambled backwards trying to put a great deal of distance between herself and White Owl. Daiyu rolled and crying out in pain pushed herself to stand. She began to run, trying to find some shelter behind another wagon. She needed to breathe. She knew deep down she was simply prolonging the inevitable but the instinct to perserve herself was winning out.

Daiyu made it to another wagon and she crawled under some of the heavy broken planks. Laying on her stomach she could see if anyone came near her and just to her left was a hole big enough for her to slip out of and continue to run. She waited now. The sweat on her face made the dirt stick to her and she could taste grit in her mouth.

Daiyu laid flat, she needed to take care of her shoulder. If she rolled hard, pushing it into the ground she wondered if she could get it to pop back into the socket. With grim determination Daiyu rolled, pushing her shoulder back in an effort to force it into place. She bit her lip as it painfully shifted and with a small pop hit home. The pressure release was immense and while it still ached at least she had mobility again.

Her eyes immediately watched the ground outside the wagon again. She could see where Jesse lay but not where White Owl was.
