Jishua Rokunam

"What does 'The End' really mean to you?"

0 · 382 views · located in Helvetia

a character in “Helvetia”, as played by Lloyd999

Description

ImageName: Jishua Rokunam
Age: 29, but somehow his expertise may suggest otherwise.
Gender: Male
Height: 170cm (I use metric)
Species: Human
Skills\weapons\abilities: He is adept with necromancy, a little known fact, and can summon and channel all kinds of spirits and demons. The most precious piece of equipment he has is his Demon Lens, a tool that lets him see anything he wishes, as long as he looks at it through the lens. He can see ghosts, demons and other invisible creatures. He can see magical activity happening in all living things. He can see things from far far away, like a telescope, or even see through solid objects. He can even see into a person's soul, but not their mind of course. In return, however, it drains the user of his eyesight with every use, and while a person can easily heal their eyesight, constant use is unhealthy, and could result in permanent stages of blindness.

He also has a cat pet, named Jikorin, and while at first, it may seem like a normal cat, with the exception of it's split tail, it is actually a Bakeneko, a cat that has lived for at least 100 years and became a demon. This Bakeneko can; change in size and appearance, impersonate a panther or human, fly, speak, create will-o-wisps, control and feed off of souls, and even reanimate corpses. Jishua gets her to do his bidding in his more secretive and specialized affairs.

Personality: Jishua puts on a lot of faces, making it hard to tell when he's being honest or if he's being dishonest at all. He often keeps to himself during the day, only speaking if spoken to, as if spending all day contemplating. When he is in company of others, he tries to be as friendly as possible, but he has this philosophical side that makes it difficult for him to connect to others. Though, a wise man can tell, just by his gaze or speech, that he has ulterior motives of some kind, and indeed he is keeping to a secret agenda. He'll openly admit to it to, but all he'll reveal about is that he is "working on something for the good of everyone" and "needs you to keep faith in [him]".

So begins...

Akihina paced quickly through the halls of Helvetia's town hall, inspecting the place that she was now to work at. She toured the foyer, the main halls, and eventually found the wing for her and the Governor, two similarly-sized offices, her superior's being the larger and more ornate one.

A few of the old governor's housekeepers had prepared the building for the new staff earlier that day, and Akihina squealed in delight when she saw a massive slice of chocolate cake on a plate of fine china sitting on her desk, waiting for her. She plopped down into her fancy new chair, snatched up the ornate fork gingerly laid by the plate, and began enjoying the welcome-present.

A few minutes and a napkin later, she got up from her desk and strolled out the door, stopping by the Governor's office. The door was closed, so she gave the door a few knocks before calling through the door.

"Everything has been moved in how you asked! If you want me for something, I'm in my office. Good luck as the new boss!" She chimed, finishing with an audible giggle and trotting back to her office. She put her feet up on her desk, and summoned a few fox-fires that she slowly juggled in one hand while staring off into space.

"Good luck as the new boss!" After hearing her leave, he replied with a late "Thank you," before gazing out the window again. From his window, he could see much of the village, among the many millennia old trees of which they were situated in and against. The village was massive and was almost always in the shade. Below the houses and bridges and boardwalks were the shallow waters and swamps, that consisted of many waterlogged crops such as deepwater rice and watercress. And at the very tops were but a few homes for the upper class, perhaps in a literal sense, and a few public buildings like schoolhouses. Helvetia was a village of wonder, of history, of politics, of legend, of mystery, of peace.

And it was all thanks to the former Governor that the village was in the peaceful state it was in now. It was probably why the citizens of Helvetia were so reluctant to see him pass. And now, his role has been entrusted to Jishua Rokunam (which he still has to finish recorrecting papers that accidentally spelled it Joshua). How did he earn their trust, being not but a foreigner? The trick was to look at people's problems, and the problem of the citizens was that they needed a Governor, not just simply to manage tax payments and whatnot, but they needed someone to look up to.

It made sense for creatures like short-lived creatures like dogs, wolves or ants to be more submissive, and Humans, though greedy, always seem to look to others to solve problems and make choices to difficult for them. Many creatures did evolve from similar lineages that gave them a need for a 'master'. Goblins, Merfolk, Avians, Kitsune, Centaur, Imps and other similar creatures had this trait. Though, somehow, longer-lived creatures, (Dragons, Vampires, Fairies, etc.) didn't share this trait. Supposedly, creatures with shorter lifespans are more social, while a creature with a longer lifespan were less dependent on others, likely to due knowledge, perhaps even arrogance. In theory, however, it was by nature that the citizens desired a leader.

Bees, though they had a Queen, never took orders from her, and yet protected her with their lives. The Queen simply bred for the hive. Bees even had a security force meant to search for and punish any other bees caught laying eggs, as it was treason. Wolves are not so different, as their Alpha Male and Alpha Female did all the breeding, and they hunted down any wolves that simply left the pack, like deserters in wartime. There were so many crimes for treachery that go punished in the wild, as they do in the civilized world. Why? A leader can easily be replaced, and any scholar makes a better leader than a birthright. Some say it's religious, but religion was simply a way to explain the natural. Interesting, however, how many frown upon basic instinct, and at the same time, embrace it.

Is there really a God? Are there many? Is there life after death? Many disagree with each other, but each is equally true. Some say the Universe existed as humans perceived it. Everything in the heavens rotates around the Earth; the Moon, the Sun, the Stars, but is that only because humans perceived it that way? Does God exist because humans had perceived him? Some people depicted many mythical creatures as wicked and nasty, yet here the Governor stood, governing over a village full of these things. In fact, many monsters are fear incarnate. People feared the dark, and Shadow People existed. People feared swimming, and Sharks existed. People feared loss of privacy, and the mind-reading Satori existed. People feared loss of sight, and the Demon Lens existed. In this thought experiment, this theory of perceived universe held all to true.

But what if humanity ended? With nothing left with the ability to observe, nothing can be observed. This is why Rokunam feared death most of all. If he simply perceived other humans, than would the universe end as soon as his did?

The Governor turned at the sound of meowing. Jikorin lay lazily on his desk. She clearly was looking for attention, all cats did. Rokunam turned away from the window and sat back at his desk. He then simply picked up the black cat and dropped her on the floor, whom simply ran off and jumped upon the windowsill. The cat was rather upset about the new job, as all she wanted was constant attention. She'd go running off in the town hall and already get plenty of affection from the staff, however. "The Governor's Cat" wasn't such a bad title. Perhaps she'd go wander around the village and return in the morning. Jishua wouldn't have minded. The cat glared at the Governor as he went on about reading and signing papers, before jumping out the window.

Shfff, KERCHUNK,

Akihane's ears twitched as the telltale sounds of a window opening broke the silence. She stood up from the desk and slowly opened the door to Jishua's office, turning the handle and letting herself in.

She quickly glanced towards the open window, noting the lack of a cat, before looking back to the Governor.

"Exciting job, isn't it?" Akihane gestured to the papers and chuckled. "Signing papers, passing and denying laws, all with that pen in your hand. You really do have an enormous amount of power in an institution such as Helvetia, and the common folk don't even realize it. Hell, most people that don't work with you daily have no idea about some of the things that show up on this table."

The kitsune let out an exaggerated sigh, before continuing,
"Let's not get ahead of ourselves. I'm more than confident that our governor can make the right decisions." She finished with a playful wink and a giggle, her tails perking up slightly.

"Exciting you say?" Jishua paused. He thought about it for a bit, reexamining the paper in front of him. "In a sense, yes, there is a sort of exhilaration behind it, it being a huge bout of responsibility on my part... Have you seen-" he looked around the room for a second, "... Nevermind..."

"Anyhow, take this for example. A permit for setting aside a section of land for use of woodcutting by woodsmen, a pressure every Governor before has had to face. The trees are absolutely pristine and tremendous on size, and as economic advisors are telling me, will seriously boost our economy up ten-fold. At the same time, however, there is much pressure from the public that is against the idea, with opposition of it's own. Many former Governors were funding money to bring in scholars to survey the land and trees, and there was even sections of land that were being cleared. However, it was the last Governor who revoked the whole thing, at the interest of the local public. Quite a waste, really..."

Jishua paused to look over the permit, which only lacked his signature. "Some homework for you, Akihana, as it would deeply please me." He looked at her and gave a reassuring smile. "I'd like you to find the results of these surveys, would you kindly?"

"Of course. I'll head to the university and inquire about them. I'll bring back whatever they give me." Akihana promptly stood and walked from Jishua's office to the foyer, then out the door. Her tails fanned out behind her, mimicking the tails of a suit jacket while she walked. Most pedestrians stepped out of her way when she came by, and she simply laughed.

I'm not some deity or something, come on, she mused at the way those around her acted as if she'd behead them for crossing her path. It was rather convenient to not have anyone in the way, so she wasn't one to complain.

She could see the university building ahead of her, the doors open and people going to and fro in the building.
"Alright," She muttered to herself, "Where do I look first?"

About time, the cat thought, seeing the young woman go buy her a rather tasty and freely earned treat. A cat's life, her's especially, is as good as always. At least nine times as old as any human, with nine times as many lives, and nine times as much luck, and of course, nine times as much power.

Though, once she gave her the treat, she had a smirk before leaving, which unsettled Jikorin. Nonetheless, she got herself what was entitled to her since she set eyes on it. But there was something she needed to do first.

Having returned to her normal size, the cat walked past the seafood stand, cod snug in her mouth, and even dared to make eye contact with the vendor. His face was so red, it might as well have been a tomato. 'Could anybody want anything but a cat's life?' she thought.

She didn't need to eat, but she was a cat, and cats loved fish. Some Bakeneko were known to drink lamp oil, as some lamp oils contained fish oil, and apparently it was a refined taste, but Jikorin thought it was a dirty thing to do.

As she walked around, slowly enjoying her treat as she did, she noticed somebody, the Governor, among the crowd. There were certainly quite a few eyes on him. Somehow, Jikorin was curious. Was he busy? Jumping on a rooftop, Jikorin finished her snack before transforming into her Human/Neko disguise, ears and tails visible. Jumping back down, she caught up to the Governor.

"I take it you used this form to speak with me in public," the Governor noted. "Well, a talking cat looks weird," she responded, "And I was wondering, well, where are 'ya going?"

Jisha smirked. "Just a little tree-viewing," he touched his jacket pocket, "You want to join me?" He asked.

"No thank you, I'm rather proud of my eyesight," Jikorin declined, "So, I'm assuming you suspect something's special about the trees, right?"

Jishua shook his head. "I don't think it's the trees I should be interested in," he said, "I think it might be something else, something bigger..."

Jikorin frowned. "Well, doesn't sound interesting," she said, "So, I'm off. Be back when I feel like it!" She then ran off in the other direction, looking for a safe place to revert back to a cat. Though, in the back of her mind, she did wonder exactly what would be bigger than the trees, but a larger part of it was more concerned in taking a catnap.

She loved the feeling of air rushing past her, the way the world looked when you were looking down on it. She could see everything and could feel the world around her flowing through her animal form. Out of all the magic in the world she was glad she had this one, it wasn't powerful or helpful towards other people but it was defiantly liberating and with her family, Beth defiantly needed some freedom every once in a while, away from expectations of her parents and the stress of trying to look after her older sister.

She flew all over the place, the town square and among the streets before finally returning to the woods to change back into her human form, that is until she noticed the governor walking through the woods, what was he up to?
Flying down to get a closer look, she miss judged her angle and face planted into the floor, right in front of the blue haired man.

The forests of Helvetia were down to be large and dark. Now, Helvetia itself was part of the forest, but the village hadn't ever expanded quickly, due to the inhabitants wishing to leave space for nature, some even speaking of curses being placed upon the greedy who claimed too much land for themselves.

Though, the sheer size of the trees is what intrigued the Governor. They had to have been ancient, somehow able to suck all the nutrients out of the podzols and grow to gravity-defying sizes, hardly even cracking under their own weight. The Governor had only one explanation, that magic was involved, centuries of it.

The surveys, the Governor hoped, would give readings on the types and average sizes of the trees for each section of land, and he also hoped there was also some soil mapping, which made sense in a village. Though, what the Governor was hoping for most was some sort of Mana survey, probably the most expensive. That's why he was out doing a survey of his own.

The Governor walked among short grasses, wet grounds and toadstools alike. Toadstools often large where magic power is abundant, and were a good ingredient for all kinds of light-based magic, and often, they attracted fairies. Fairies have a deep connection with nature and were infamous for invoking tremendous plant growth simply through her presence. One tale told of a tree being split in half by a lightning bolt, but made a full recovery a few days later when a few fairies began living in it. The Governor was hoping to find these.

So there he was, wandering aimlessly as he kept one eye shut and gazed through a lens. His gaze would wander from his feet, up the trees and into the air. Whatever he was seeing seemed to keep him intrigued as to what was happening, invisible to the naked eye.

Although, he stopped upon hearing a twig crack. Bringing the lens away from his eye, he rubbed his eyes looked blankly into the distance. After about two seconds, he blinked rapidly, as if something was in his eye,, before focusing on the ground in front of him. He saw a little sparrow on the ground. He looked up into the trees, trying to determine where it came from, before placing the lens over his eye and looking back at the bird, crouching.

"Oh, dear me," he said, pulling it away and blinking a few times, "A little sparrow lose it's way, was she distracted and miss the branch?"

Beth stared up at the new governor, she had not met the man before and had only seen him briefly. She was curious through, why was the governor looking at the forest and there was no way it was just for a pleasant stroll.
Gingerly hopping up onto her small legs she ruffled her feathers and re tucked them, before tilting her head ever so slightly and staring at the man with her brown eyes, her eyes were the one thing she was unable to change, through she was lucky in the sense that most creatures had dark eyes and with hers being brown, unless you looked closely you wouldn't notice them as unordinary.
After a second of staring at the mayor, beth took flight and landed on a branch just above the mayors head, changing branches and flying after him as the governor continued to survey(?) the forest.
Eventually getting tried of just flying after him, beth decided she might as well sit on his shoulder, that way she could see what he was doing closer and not have to fly every 2 seconds to keep up with the man.

The forest, at a glance, seemed like a typical temperate rainforest, aside from the large trees, but one glance through the Demon Lens told a whole different story.

Mana cascaded up the tree trunks like coursing rivers, racing from the trunks and into the leaves above. What amazed Jishua was seeing exactly how far down the roots reached. Somehow, the energy must have been buried deep underground, but for what reason?

The trees that held the most energy were covered in fungi, which gave off magically enriched spores into the air. The air was filled with these spores, which sparkled like stars, but there were many areas where the light was clumped up, appearing in the lens like small will-o-wisps. He couldn't tell if they were spores or not, but they had a very similar shape to spirits, he knew that much.

Also, he noticed that while the energy in the trees was green, the energy of the wisps and spores was blue, and the fungi was where it met. "Two types of magical energy, perhaps?" He'd remembered his teachings; Mana was unusable and came from the earth, while Od existed in all creatures. Their origins are unknown, but Od stays in the soul even after it parts from the body. There was no way it was actually Od. But there was only one way to test.

Jishua turned his head to the sparrow on his shoulder, and brought the the lens away from his eye and waited for his vision before muttering a spell; Homofornum. A counter spell to the animal transformation spell, Anifornum, a spell that reverts magicians back to their original form. If the spell worked, then Jishua's hypothesis was right, that quite literally, magic was in the air.

"Two types of magical energy, perhaps?" Beth heard the governor say. Why was he looking at the magic of the forest? Everyone knew that this forest had some magical powers within it, it surrounded the village and protected it. But what did he meant by two magical energy's? Beth was good at shapeshifting but she was not old enough to have entered the university and had therefore not studied the types of magics, she did know however that the forest was very high in mana which she heard from her father.
Beth froze as she saw the governor turn to look it her, he couldn't of figured her out right? The man removed his demon lens and suddenly muttered a spell which Beth was only vaguely able to work out, "Homoforum", Beth cursed in her mind, she had been found out and she only had a few second to get away.
Suddenly taking flight from the mans shoulder she felt her body begin to spasm as she was forced back into her original form, she luckily managed to land in a bush which at least protected her modesty, but she was stuck here for a while as the effect of his spell wore off. She heard the man approach the bush, no way was he going to see her!
"Are you crazy!" Beth called out, "You do know that a shapeshifter can't be clothed when they shift! You can't just go forcibly making us shift back to our original forms when we have no cloths near by to change into!" She continued, hopefully the governor would realise his error and bring her some cloths, or else she would be stuck naked in the middle of her forest for who knows how long until she could shift again!

"Oh, my deepest apologies," the Governor said, turning away, "I was just testing something, not sure if you were paying attention. Didn't want to burn the forest down or something if something went wrong." What he didn't mention was that he'd already seen her bare human form when he saw her in the lens the first time, but Jishua was not a perverted man.

Although, that proved one thing, the magic energy in the air was Od. Humans were known for having very little Od compare to other creatures, including animals, so while the old fashioned wizard borrowed the powers of creatures such as fairies, djin or demons, the modern magician used tools like wands and staffs to convert Mana into Od. However, both arts required the use of enchanted items. Yet Jishua, human by almost all definitions, could preform a basic counter-spell with nothing but a cursed eyeglass on his person, and not feel any weaker.

However, the Governor was simply just that, the Governor. He wasn't any professor in magic or nature, he just made decisions. He came to make the decision as to how the trees should be dealt with, preserved or opened for logging, clearcut or selective, free or monopolized. But it was here that he realized he was dealing with something bigger, possibly something he could use that would help the village, perhaps economically, and the trees were clearly a key to the whole process. There were just a couple missing details that could possibly be of even more worth. Where underground was the Mana coming from, and why? How were fungi releasing Od into the air? Why did it collect in bulbs? What would happen if they grew even larger, or even too large? Could they be harvested, used and sold practically?

Though, of current concern was the woman's plight at his own fault. "Is there anything I can do for you, young lady?" he asked.

Beth smiled, thank god he was going to help, "Ya, my cloths are in a clearing not to far from here, I am not able to shift back for at least 3 hours after that spell you cast so if you could get them for me I would be really grateful!" She called back over the push, before pausing a second and continuing, "How were you able to do that counter spell? You had no wand or staff on you that I could see and I through only those with nature magic like shifters and element benders could do magic without staffs?" She asked.
Beth was curious, she couldn't help it, the trait kinda ran in her family through with Beth it wasn't strong enough for her to go seeking it out or put her life in danger to find out the answer.
She wanted to know why the governor was out her and why he had a demon lens, they let one see magic right? But the only magic in this forest was mana, the place was overflowing with it after the event happen a couple of years back, and even before that it still had a large mana energy.

Jishua looked into the distance using his Demon Lens, rotating steadily to find the woman's hidden clothing articles, but as he did that, he heard her bring up a question; "How were you able to do that counter spell?"

"There's a special type of magic in the air" he explained, "This forest is definitely magical, no doubt, but there's a special type of magical energy, the kind found only in living things, the kind magicians like ourselves use to preform magic. And, I think it's connected to the various fungi in the forest... I'm assuming those over in that direction are yours."

Placing the lens back in his cost pocket, he began walking, before tripping over a bush. Getting up and regaining his composure, he continued walking.

Beth nodded her head apsentmindedly when he asked where her cloths were, her brain preoccupied trying to remember this other type of magic.
She heard a thud and glancing up saw the governor trip over the bush, trying to stifle her giggles as he quickly got up and regained his composer, it was nice to know that he wasn't perfect.
Glancing around she was now alone the forest and couldn't help but feel a bit self conscious, god she hoped no one would see her! It was already embarressing enough that she had been forced to shift back, but she also knew that her parents would misunderstand somehow and she would probably get in loads of trouble after all she was supposed to be the 'responsible' one.
'Please hurry up mr... I never asked his name! What was it, what was it?' Beth thought, They said it when they introduced him as our new governor but she hadn't been there, chasing after Leigh again, and had not learned the mans name.
'I will just have to ask him when he comes back.' Beth thought as she settled down to wait.

The Governor rubbed his forehead as he looked for the woman's clothing, the topple doing a bigger number on his ego than his body. There were many enchanted treasures in the world, thirteen from what Jishua remembered, though, that could easily have changed, but the Demon Lens was not one of these. It's a cursed item, and not just some jinxed trinket some charlatan might sell you. The creation of one is a form of dark art, which involved hexing an animal (some of the more preferable choices are hawks, owls, cats, spiders, snakes, frogs and humans) to be unable to close it's eyes for sixty nights and sixty days. After such a period, it's eyes are gouged out and offered to a three-eyed demon, whom the caster must barter with to trade one of his eyes for, but it will only trade one and will devour the other. The demon will usually accept eyes that are very strong or very pretty, and are very picky. Once the transaction is made, the clear-glass pupil must be carefully carved out and dipped in Kudoku fluids (insect toxin) and only afterward it can be crafted into some sort of eyeglass. It would be twice as much work make two separate lens for a pair of glasses, so a simply monocle was enough for Jishua.

However, even after all that work, the tool requests one more sacrifice, it's user's eyesight is fed to the newly-born spirit inhabiting the glass, and not to mention, being able to see more than the human spectrum allows puts a lot of strain on the eyesight as well. The way the Governor used it did absolute terror on his eyes, especially right now. He'd often have that problem, as his vision would go blurry, or black. Sometimes, he'd be colorblind for a minute after. Very soon, he would become completely blind, perhaps totally reliant on the Demon Lens. Maybe he'd need that second lens to make himself an enhanced pair of glasses. But why the risk?

They say that once you experienced wonders, you'd never go back.

Finding the hole in the ground where the young lady had hidden her clothing, he picked them up and neatly hung them over his arm, but as a gust of wind blew through, a piece had blown out of his grasp and deeper into the woods. Sighing, he brought the lens back over his eye, and easily caught sight of it blowing in the wind, but something else caught his eye. The blue wisps of magical energy were being blown by the wind as well, not unlike seeds or spores. They raced past him in the wind, weaving between the trees, headed in the village's direction. Jishua could hardly contain his awe. Were they simply a part of an enchanted mushroom's reproductive cycle, or something bigger?

"Madam," Jishua called, returning, her clothing folded over his arm, approaching the bush, "I've retrieved your clothing, many apologies on my part." Jishua may have had quite a a lot unanswered questions, which had only increased with the last event he witnessed, but it was probably best for him to return to his duties and do some more research another time. Perhaps he could do some studying beforehand, see if he could find some information on the phenomena.

Beth peaked over the bush when she heard the governor return, "Thanks!" She said as she grabbed the cloths and began to redress. "So what's your name mister?" She asked over her shoulder as she pulled on the last item of clothing. Hearing no reply, Beth turned back around only to see that he had left.
Sighing, Beth stood up. She had had her little moment of freedom today and with the event with the governor she was a lot later than usual. Her parents would probably be wondering where she was and if she didnt return with Leigh in tow there might be trouble.
Walking out of the forest she headed back to the university, maybe if she was lucky her sister had returned for her lessons... But than again when was she ever lucky?
Walking up the stairs she suddenly noticed to familiar figures carrying books down the stairs of the university, one was of the governors Assistent and the other was of... Leigh... "Well I guess today is my lucky day." Beth mummers as she rushed up the stairs towards her sister, "Leigh! I have been looking everywhere for you! What are you doing?" Beth asked as she came to a stop in front of the pair.

"So what's so important about it?" the cat asked the Governor, lying in his arms. After the Governor left the forest, he had found her on the way back, her getting herself stuck in a tree (go figure) and they were making their way back to the Government building.

"That's what I'm wondering," he responded to the talking cat, "If the forest is producing magic, or possibly even souls, where's it all going?" The cat yawned and squirmed in his arms.

"When you think of souls," she licked her lips, "You think of dead people, right? But of course, the soul stays with the body for a couple days, but what's such a pain is how people bury their dead, and the soul goes to waste." The cat frowned, "I'm no dog, so I'm not spending all night digging them up."

"Yes, but that has nothing to do with the forest... unless..." Jishua pondered a hypothesis for a moment. It was a dumb thought, but it made him wonder. It only made sense if somehow, something tragic happened. It was a hypothesis, but it was quite the stretch.

Finally arriving back at his office, he let Jikorin jump out of his arms as he invited himself in, only to find his assistant there, presumably with his request fulfilled, but what he didn't expect was the woman he met in the woods. Even Jikorin wasn't expecting her, the same woman who she tricked into thinking she was a stray. Jikorin decided it was best to nonchalantly hide under the Governor's desk and out of sight.

"Well then, ladies," the Governor told them, if his presence was not already known, "Akihana, I see you brought what I asked for," she glanced at the woman she was with, "And a friend as well..." Jishua forgot to tell her to try and keep his actions related to the forest as a secret, as it would bring some political uneasiness if the public were to find out and start suspecting he was contemplating the cutting of the forests, unlike many of the Governors before who had little hesitation when it came to that decision.

"Jishua Rokunam," he said with a smile and bowed, "At the people's service."

Sitting at his desk, he then started looking through each of the books. "This is certainly a nice selection," he told Akihana. One was a yearly survey of the forest 100km around Helvetia, but what it surveyed, the Governor would have to find out for himself. Sure it would make sense for a community in and surrounded by forest would hold interest, but surveys are expensive and the only need for them would have been for economic development, which the rather closed community was rather uninterested in. Helvetia was always a special case, being smack dab in the middle of a rather mystical land, and was especially full of various creatures. Many of which were quite in tune with nature, like fairies, nymphs and whatnot, whom seem to come and go quite often, so to document the exact number of residents in the village was difficult in itself. It was difficult to find the real economic interests behind such a laid-back community. For most, even many of the humans, life was simply about living it.

Though, what was for certain was the interest the communities outside had in the forest and the township. Helvetia could easily become one of the richest logging towns in history, as lumberjacks could come in from all over the continent to cut down what was essentially brown gold, and the village would prosper. It was simply that the residents just didn't allow it. Jishua, being an outsider, could easily understand their perspective, but at the same time, he wanted to keep the trust of the public. His campaign was all about keeping their trust, but at the same, fulfilling the wants of everybody, which was quite appealing in the rather diverse community of Helvetia. Though, the Governor knew very well that it was blind to think there is a middle ground. But it wasn't blind to search for one, and if he could uncover the secret of the magical forest, perhaps he'd find that there was more than gold to be found.

"I really appreciate the effort, Akihana," the Governor told her, "Although, it probably was a simple task for a Kitsune like yourself to pick out what was best for me, isn't that right?" He proceeded to flip through the oldest book, it's worn bindings nearly falling apart out of time and misuse.

"I really appreciate the effort, Akihana. Although, it probably was a simple task for a Kitsune like yourself to pick out what was best for me, isn't that right?"
Akihana felt like his tone was similar to someone praising a dog that just learned to sit or roll over, but she didn't seem to mind much; she was actually a bit flattered from his comments anyway.
"W-Well, the only hard part was carrying the books, after all..." Her face flushed with a subtle, almost unnoticeable shade of pink.
