Melanie Fae

"Never fear shadows. They simply mean there's a light shining somewhere nearby."

a character in “Hero Factory”, as played by slcam

Description

Name: Melanie Fae, though most people call me either Mel or Fae. I am really weird-ed out when people call me Melanie. It just sounds awkward.

Age: Just turned sixteen a few weeks ago.

Tell me a bit about yourself: Well, I don't really like talking about myself, but I suppose I must. I am short, usually no taller that the average persons shoulder. I have black hair and blue eyes. I don't usually show much emotion.

Personality

I guess you also want to know something about my personality. *sighs* I am somewhat secretive and don't really talk unless someone speaks to me first, though I enjoy writing in my journal. I write a lot. I am pretty well introverted. I am somewhat awkward socially and won't really help carry a conversation. I prefer watching and listening to speaking and interacting. I am usually the person sitting in the corner observing but not really taking part. I enjoy trying to figure people out. What their personality is, how they will react to things, stuff like that. I prefer night to day and am usually up half the night walking around the school grounds. I could excel in school, but I don't really see the point in throwing myself into it. Don't get me wrong, I always get good grades, I just don't get the grades I could. When I get tired of observing, I enjoy exploring the school. It is large enough that there is always someplace to go and be alone. My favorite place to go is the library and I often find that hours have past while I am immersed in a new book. When I am outside, I am usually quiet enough that animals will come right up to me. It is pretty entertaining actually. If I were ever to get into any kind of fight, or if someone said anything hurtful or offensive to me, I nearly always run away and hide instead of fighting back.

Equipment

So what are your abilities other than being drop dead godly: Um... okay. My powers basically have to do with shadows. I can blend into a shadow (basically disappear) and travel in it as far as that shadow goes uninterrupted at about the speed that I can run. For instance, if a shadow goes under a door, I can get into that room without leaving the shadow, but if there is no shadow on the other side of the door, I can't even attempt it. This is really nice, I wouldn't want to end up stuck under a door. To go from one shadow to another that aren't connected, I basically have to come all the way out of the shadows to get to the other. I am working on that though. There have been times when I have gotten stuck in a shadow for an hour or two or fallen out of a shadow when I didn't mean to. That has gotten me into quite a bit of trouble, but I am improving at it. I can also control shadows, so far only when I am not in them. For now I can only change their shape, but I am working on making illusions with them.
This happens randomly, but sometimes I see things that are hidden, either an object or a secret of some sort. It is rare though.

History

How did you come to be at the academy: I came pretty early on, when I was about thirteen. It is kind of a long story, but I guess if you want to hear it... I was the middle child of an average little family. Everyone else in my family, my parents, older sister, and younger brother, are all extremely loud, extroverted, and active. I was kind of the odd one out and no one in my family really understood me. This is why I was often left out or just forgotten. One memory that pretty much sums up my childhood was a simple game of hide and seek. My brother and sister decided to play and dragged both our parents and me into it. We all went and hid with my brother trying to find us. He quickly found everyone but me and I just stubbornly kept hiding. They didn't even realize this, started playing tag, and eventually left the park. I ended up walking all the way home and slipping in unnoticed in the middle of the night.

I first discovered my powers when I got in trouble for something. I don't even remember what it was now. My dad was yelling at me and I turned and ran into my room and sat in the corner. I felt myself fade into the shadowy corner, not understanding what was happening. My dad came in, seeming to stare right at me before he mumbled, "Where did that girl go?" and walked away. I have been practicing ever since. Eventually, I got tired of never being noticed and just left. I doubt they even realize I am gone.

I just basically wandered around for a while, stealing food when I was hungry. One day at a mall, a mall store owner saw me walking out without paying. He started yelling for the mall security as I slipped into the shadows. I accidentally slipped out of the shadow, landing right in front of one of the security officers of course. I was arrested and taken to a police station where they tried to figure out how I popped out of the shadows and who I was. After a few hours of them yelling at me and me not saying a word, people from the academy got me out and brought me here.

So begins...

Mel woke up unusually early. She lay in bed trying to determine what exactly had woken her, but there wasn't really anything happening. She tried to fall back asleep for a while before giving up and slipping out of bed. She quickly dressed and slipped out of her room, looking up and down the hall to see if anyone else was up. Since all was still, she quickly and silently walked around to the library. Maybe she could get a good start on that book she was looking at the other day. Mel soon came to the door and pushed it open with a small creak, letting it close behind her as she breathed in the dusty smell of the still, dark, medium sized library.

"Now where was it?" Mel said softly to herself, walking further in until she found the correct aisle. She then grabbed the book and sat down in a small windowsill that couldn't be seen from the door and that had a view over the front drive of the school. She had spent many hours there. She quickly began reading and was soon immersed in the tale of a princess who ended up having to save her knight in shining armor instead of him saving her. Mel was enjoying the princess's sarcastic and outspoken point of view. What if I was like that, she thought, closing the book slowly with her thumb saving her place. Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a car coming up the drive. She glanced over to see the sun already up. It was already much later in the morning. It was almost time for breakfast. She looked down, watching as Yuki got up to greet the people getting out of the car. It was two girls. They were probably new students.

I wonder what their stories are, she shook her head. Some of those who ended up here had sad, and even tragic stories. Mel had ended up hearing many of them though she wouldn't be the one to ask about that kind of thing. It was probably because people tended to forget she was in the room at all. She had heard many interesting stories that way, not always just about student's previous lives either. Her attention turned back to the newcomers as she watched them walk in, Yuki trailing behind them. One of the girls had red hair and the other had blond hair. They both looked around Yuki's age. Now Mel would have to get used even more people. She sighed. She would have to meet them eventually. Maybe at breakfast. She still had time though. She read another couple pages before she stopped. She found a piece of paper to use as a bookmark, put the book down on the windowsill, and left the library.

As Mel walked downstairs, she noticed Yuki, Amber, and Sylar standing around talking to the new girls. The atmosphere seemed unusually tense as Yuki walked away. She stood where she was, peering around the corner, waiting for the group to leave the hallway before she went to breakfast.

Aeon was vaguely aware of the fact that there were new students supposedly arriving today. She had awoken early because she had a busy day planned - she had hoped to get in at least one nice, long walk in the woods beyond the school; this included picking berries, taking pictures, and hopefully finding enough dandelion roots to make tea for her friends. There was a doubt in her mind as to whether she wanted to meet the new students. People had a tendency to come in with a poor attitude, due to their circumstances, and she found that it was usually better to give these people time to collect their thoughts before thrusting yet another new figure into their lives. It was her way of being sensitive to their needs.
As she gently and delicately pulled her orange hair into a low ponytail, she heard the rattle of a car engine.
In actuality, it may not have been rattling where anyone else could hear it; it may very well have been one of those times that her senses amazed her by being more pronounced than usual.
She ran to the window and pulled back the tawny silk curtains, staring down into the parking area at the car. Yuki was there, as usual, ready to greet the newcomers and show them about the school. When he opened the door, two young girls stepped out. One looked average - and the other looked discontent.
Aeon had no desire to greet someone with such a negative disposition. It's not that she didn't like new students, but rather that she didn't like new students to not like her. Poor overwhelmed teens coming into a new atmosphere, most of them in dire need of new guidance, being made to change everything they have been used to and start over.... not the best time to try to get to know someone.
Aeon sighed and moved to the dresser on the opposite wall. She pulled on a corset-style top with thick straps, purple boning and ivory lace trim. Against her extremely pale skin, she looked almost reminiscent of a saloon dancer. She coupled this with a flowing white peasant skirt with floral detail, and as usual, she looked stunning.
She closed her door silently behind her, carrying her four books to be returned to the library. She wore no shoes, and walked with the grace of a fawn over the old red carpet lining the hallway. The sun was beaming in through the high stained glass windows and playing a light show on her skin. The warmth made her feel fuzzy and light, and she started to close her eyes and just revel in the peacefulness of it.
Pretty soon she realized she was levitating by accident and quickly bumped into a wall.
She was wrenched back to reality just in time to catch Mel walking out of the library doors. She was still a good fifteen feet away, and rather than call to Mel she slipped into the library, deposited her books, and rushed off to meet her for breakfast.

Listening to what Yuki said about the school and then the introduction of Sylar, Amber knew she could just step out now after saying her piece. "Okay you two I'll hand you over to Sylar to show you your rooms." She gave a smile to the two girls and turned to Sylar, "take care of them won't you?" She managed to creep out on last smile for Sylar to show she didn't mean that in some sort of stereotypical view. She knew what he could do and she knew he knew that she was partially afraid of him because of it. Knowing all of a persons secrets in a single word? Powerful.

She turned around and began walking from the reception area attempting not to touch anyone skin to skin, the result being if say she did, they would get one hell of a shock. Amber let herself walk aimlessly down various corridors while she thought of something to do. She didn't feel like eating this morning, she never really eat much to be honest. As she kept on walking through different corridors and saying hi or hello to people as she walked she realised she had just walked in a big circle. To her right was the reception area and to her left was the library, as she went to turn around she noticed Melanie almost hugged up against a pillar, she walked up behind her and tapped on her shoulder, "Hey Mel-Mel"

Mel watched the group, especially the two new girls, while still mostly hidden from view. There was something about the red head that seemed odd. Mel guessed it was the fact that she stuck so close to the blonde and seemed nearly terrified. She didn't seem to say much and was unsure when she did say something. Most of the time when there was a new arrival, they might be surprised that there were so many others like them, and were usually still tired and sad from the life they left behind, but Mel had never seen someone so frightened by all of this.

The blonde on the other hand seemed confident in herself. She also seemed quite concerned and protective over the other girl. Before Yuki had left, she had seemed to act almost threatening towards him, and now her manner seemed to imply that she was taunting Sylar as well. Maybe she felt either she or her friend was threatened and she was simply defending herself. It was either that or she was naturally confrontational. Mel knew she would just have to keep an eye on her to find that one out.

Soon after Yuki left, Amber left as well. Those three seem to be moving off, Mel thought with a small sigh of relief. She was starting to get hungry and could just barely smell the sent of breakfast cooking. She was about to leave her spot, when someone touched her, sending a painful, but thankfully small static shock through her shoulder.

"Ouch!" she said, jumping and quickly turning around to see who it was, though she already had a good guess.

"Hey Mel-Mel" said Amber. Mel smiled as she said, "Hello, Amber." She glanced back toward the dining area. It would be rude to just walk away without saying anything or at least inviting her along. "Want some breakfast?" she asked simply, pointing a thumb in the general direction of the dining room.
