He watches over us

0 · 415 views · located in New Cosmopolitian City

a character in “Heroes and Villains: A New Threat”, as played by Movintarget

Description

Name: Wade Thomas
Public Name Aka Hero Name: Watcher
Age: 46
Gender: Male
Appearance:
Hero/Villain Outfit: Brown Duster, White shirt, combat boots, black pants, fingerless gloves, black mask with plain skull design, brown fedora, red sunglasses
Villain or Hero? Hero
Power 1: clairvoyance (can see and live through up to three minutes into the future, every time he lives forward a millisecond passes so if he relives to many times it becomes obvious)
Power 2: enhanced physical durability and agility
Power 3: Can detect and identify radiation emitted by any Human (limited to humans and can detect animals if they are near a human)
Lair/home: Watcher Inc. Office building has an apartment above it
Extras: Always carries The Widow Maker and various nick-knacks for everyday life.
Affiliates: Multiple people owe him favors, but when he calls them out it usually involves a ride

He is six foot five, standing tall and strong for over twenty years, has grey eyes, a nice painful scar on my face that splices his left cheek in half; plus his voice sounds like a broken buzz-saw. He has broad shoulders that make him look like a line-backer. The clothes he wears are simple; he has a brown duster that he always wears as well as a decent white shirt, black pants, black combat boots, and black fingerless gloves with metal knuckles. He obscures his face with a black mask and a pair of red sunglasses that enhance his vision.

Personality

He is a sociable individual, his smiles are infectious and his frowns worrying. He has a dry, sarcastic sense of humor and is always quick with a witty comment about any situation he is in. He can come off as bitter in some places as he witnessed the Blue Rinse and was deeply affected by the horror of the deaths. But generally he is a good man.

Equipment

He always has his trusty Widow Maker; it is a modified 9mm pistol that uses these blocks of platinum as ammo, a sliver of platinum is seared off the block and shot at whatever target he is aiming at. This means that for just one clip he has close to a million shots (so far he's reloaded once). Another good weapon is a blade he picked up on a job; it is a sixteen inch slice of death, a combination of titanium and platinum the blade literally slices through steel. he also has the usual nick-nacks of everyday life.
Powers:
1) Can see up to three minutes into the future, giving him tactical advantage over opponents and saving his life and the lives of many others in the nick of time
2) ten times more durable than the average human: strength, speed, stamina, and senses
3) Can sense the trace amounts of radiation on humans from up to a mile away (gives him an edge while in the dark or something is obscuring his vision, and he does not need to be looking at the person to see them) (he can also get a read of an individuals radiation by having something of theirs)

History

Wade Thomas was born in the city, but his family moved to the suburbs after an incident in his childhood. When he was ten, his school bus was highjacked by a villain who bled radiation of some kind or other, so when a hero came to save the children he beat up the villain but in doing so he exposed Wade to some of the villains irradiated blood. This gave him his clairvoyance and convinced his parents to move out of the city. After that encounter he signed up for martial arts lessons, he is now decent at basic forms of all martial arts, not fantastic. The Blue Rinse detonated when he was sixteen, he was just on the outskirts of the blast and had been trying to evacuate anybody within his area of the detonation as fast as he could; when the blast hit he was exposed to another dose of radiation and this amplified his strength, speed, and senses to ten times what they would be for a normal human. Since the Blue Rinse he has dedicated his life to saving people and started the Watcher, an independent organization that helped find people in the city and surrounding areas. He has become known as the Watcher and it is a generally accepted fact that he is good at finding the lost and desperate. He has been known to work in barter to help the people who would normally be unable to afford help. He is seen as a hero by many.
He now lives in his office in the hear of New Cosmopolitan

So begins...

The peace was a pleasant change for Wade. In his meditative state he did not have to worry about the missile, the computer, or the warehouse. What he saw was the people, running about their daily lives in a three mile radius. He watched them move and flow, live and now die. He got to thinking of that psalm from that outdated religion 'I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end'. Wade could think of no more ironic statement than that, he had seen the beginning with the Blue Rinse, and know he was twenty feet from the proverbial 'Omega', the big bang that ends all other big bangs. Wade hated religion, so he cleared the thoughts from his mind and went back to perimeter checks.

Wade watched Masters walk into the room in a new change of clothes with his rad sight. The man gave the room a glance, possibly to see if there was anybody there. Masters shrugged and walked over to the missile to...sleep. Wade gazed skeptically at the prone form not fifteen paces in front of him. The mutant didn't even seem to see him, was he invisible or something. Chuckling at the young man's expense, he called out, "How 'bout them Nicks?"

Wade absently noted the return of the women, remaining focused on his powers. A dull ache had begun to blossom in his skull from overuse of one or both powers, so he deactivated them and looked up at Malcom. The agent was looking at Adana in her cat for and Zoey was sifting through the frayed wires and missile bits to make sure nothing could be used.

"I take it that the mission was a success?"

Wade strode over to the missile and touched the now defunct world-ender. He turned his head to the room and said, "It's odd isn't it? Something so simple could bring about the apocalypse. I remember the day of the Rinse, the only way to describe the horror of it is to call it the end, no other word does it justice. The end of the world as we know it. And now we have in our possession a weapon of even greater power, with even more dire consequences should it ever be successfully launched."

Taking a breath he turned back to the room to look at the others, "I don't know about you guys but the implications of that are just starting to set into my mind. How many lives could be ended by this thing? So we need to decide, here and now, what happens should we fail. If somebody comes and manages to get the best of us, corners us in here with no way out. What do we do to make sure this goddamn thing never goes up in the air? We need to decide before the mercenary gets back."

He gazed at the four of them and waited for an answer.

"What about moving the warhead? Getting the actual threat as far from civilization as possible, or as far underground as we can go? It could work if the guy who made the damn thing put the actual doomsday element of it in a single location," Wade noted now that the discussion had gotten off its feet, "We should also prep for the fact that we might have to fight supers, at least one army has to have a few on payroll."

Wade nodded at both women and turned from the missile. He strode to the bags of guns ammo and parts, saying as he went, "Let's grab some of this crap and see if we can use any of it."

It was a while before noise at the door drew everyone's attention. The warehouse had been quiet before that as John and Adana napped. Even Rylie, her head back on the wall dozed a little. This place with the others around made her feel almost as if she didn't need to keep an eye open all the time.

Rylie opened her eyes and looked over as Warren and Daniel entered the room. "Welcome back boys. Nice to see you both in one piece." She nodded slightly at them. Neither looked overly happy or enthused and Rylie figured not much had come from their little excursion.

"There is food if you are hungry, rations mostly sorry. Was able to get a stock up on them while at the checkpoint. Adana got us a name, I got some info and Zoey was able to get things set up to give her better access. Productive on our end." She looked them over again. "I am assuming not so much on your side? Why don't you sit and now that we are all together we can get caught up again?"

Rylie slowly stood and moving to where Adana slept she crouched beside her. It was nice to see the girl sleeping and while she was loath to wake her, Rylie knew Adana would not want to be left out. A light hand pushed some of the hair out of Adana's face. Now that she would be able to see Rylie clearly when she woke, Rylie softly spoke.

"Adana, Warren and Daniel are back. Going to fill everyone in on what we learned okay?" She waited to see if the girl would wake and hoped she hadn't startled her. Glancing at Wade, "Might want to wake John. Gently mind you, no telling how he will react." She hesitated, hoping the man would take the warning to heart. Rylie's turned back to wait for Adana to wake.

Wade looked up from his work. Over the past while he had been building as much of a remote detonator as he could, feeling that if the worst came to pass he could destroy the entrance and make the place look like it had been trashed so nobody thought to look in the warehouse. Some well placed explosives far enough away from the bomb should compromise the integrity enough so that whatever the group happened to be fighting would think the doomsday device gone.

Seeing Warren he nodded and gave a questioning glance at the mercenary before returning his eyes to the teen.

Rylie smiled at Adana as the girl awoke. She was glad she hadn't startled her too much. Rylie knew Adana had only been in her human form for a short period of time now and she was skittish. She let Adana get comfortable, gave Daniel a nod as he sat down and watched the exchange between Zoe and Warren.

"Right well, once we have John awake we can go over what little we learned. Like Zoey said mostly just confirmed our suspicions and such but yes, a name. The man signing off on everything. I suspect John will recognize the name so he should hear this and add what he can."

Rylie stood and stretched her arms out and her back. She pulled out her bottle and popped a couple of the pills, swallowing them dry. Rylie gave a soft sigh as she considered the group. They may not have learned anything from the gangs but at least they weren't breaking down the warehouse and that was something.

She gave a small glance to Adana, the girl was sitting but looking rather nervous. "Time, she needs time to relax in her human form and around all of us."

Rylie, unsure if Wade had gone to wake John, the man seemed absorbed in working on something heading over to where John slept. She crouched at his feet. He was another that one couldn't wake harshly. As she had warned Wade, there was no telling what he might do in a half asleep state.

"John, everyone is back. I am going to fill them in on what we learned and you might want to be awake for this." She tensed, ready to move should he react poorly to being awoken. Perhaps he wouldn't wake at all. The thought nagged at the back of Rylie's mind.

Rylie nodded as John woke and behind her Daniel explained what he knew. β€œWell a truce is good. Contacts are never bad, information is never bad.”

She moved back towards everyone. β€œSo we headed off the a checkpoint. I went to see the CO in charge of it. She was none too pleased to see me.” Rylie shrugged, she got the impression the woman wouldn't have been impressed with anything.

Rylie stopped and crossed her arms. β€œI asked if they had made contact with any supers and was told that any they encountered they dealt with, she isn't fond of supers. Adana headed off to find what she could and I loaded up on supplies and chatted with a couple of the guys. They are under the impression that they are there to secure some big weapon so that the other factions don't get a chance at it. It being our missile as we assumed. The average grunt on the ground knows nothing about it. Not location, not what it is or what it does.”

Rylie looked over at Adana, β€œNow Adana was able to get us some very useful information. See there is a name that keeps popping up. Signature on all the documents. Zeke Newman. There isn't a soldier in the U.N.E. who doesn't know Blitz.”

Rylie rolled her eyes a little, β€œHe knows everything that goes on, every move, every unit and his name is what gets things done. He is the reason they are here. Problem is, there is very little that will stop him from getting what he wants. If he wants this missile he will stop at nothing to get it.”

Rylie began to pace, β€œWe cannot easily move it, although that would be our best option. We can't dismantle it all the way as Zoey said she would need help. We have planned on making this place as defensible as we can, Zoey and Wade have already started to make that happen.”

She looked around at everyone. β€œSo thoughts, questions, concerns or comments?”

Wade looked up from his work and swept his eyes over the group. His eyes rested on Zoey and he asked, "Did the computer ever say exactly where the missile was programmed to go initially? I mean, is there a place the guy who made it had it set to go to? I know we've decided to launch the damn thing under any circumstances, but where would it have ended up..." (he chuckled and added) "...who knows, he may have had it sent to Canada or something. You know, a place nobody would miss if it got the crap bombed out of it."

Rylie nodded as Zoey added to her statement about Blitz Newman. She shook her head at Daniel's suggestion. β€œI agree with Zoey, he won't be easy to take. Chances are he isn't even in the city. He signs off on everything but he likely isn't here. He would be the best person to talk to but we can't just walk up and say tell us what you know. He is too high up the food chain. We can be sure though he is controling all of this.”

Rylie turned to look at Wade, β€œAs for what we know about the missile. Before it was locked down, Warren, Adana, John and I asked it a few things. First off, it is a bio nuke. It's range is transcontinental, with no known interception capabilities. It needs launch codes to activate and those are a class SSS security clearance. Second, Andreas Radcliff made the computer, brought it online, locked it down and then died. Third, he died as a result of the Blue Rinse being detonated over New Cosmo back in 2075. Fourth, the computer had no idea why the missile was constructed as Radcliff was not under contract at the time. Fifth, he designed the computer to store data, monitor military activity and to catalog supers. It's objective however is to monitor the missile, ensure it is not launched and if it gets launched to alter the coordinates to a predetermined location. That location is 32.412429 North, 158.049316 East.”

Rylie looked around. β€œThere is a chance he was watching the missile, protecting it and designed the computer to send it someplace where it wouldn't do as much damage. There is a chance that he set it up to take out a major target if it was launched. Andreas wasn't a super. Perhaps he had a grudge against the military and planned to take them out if they happened to launch it, perhaps he was sending it into the ocean. Perhaps he was crazy and planned to wipe out as much of the world as he could. We don't know.”

She paused, letting all the information soak in. β€œWe do know the missile was here, he built the computer to alter it's course if it got launched and we know that the computer was also set up to store information about the military and about people like us.”

Wade listened to Malcolm and nodded, accepting the information. Looking down at the remote mine he had finished he walked to the far wall and placed it in a corner. Turning back and listening to the mercenary's statement he told the young shadow-man, "Grabbing a guy that high up in the chain is never good. First there are contingencies to worry about, then the resulting chaos the grunts will cause with nobody holding the leash, as well as the fact that the other militaries will view it as a sign of weakness and press harder into their turf, and last is that it will draw unneeded attention to us...which would be very bad with the ten mega-ton pile of death right behind you."

"I just agreed with Zoey that it was not a possible plan." Daniel said, an annoyed tone creeping into his voice, "I know you don't trust, I know why you don't trust me, but I don't need to be told the same thing over and over again to understand it, particularly after I just agreed with the first person to tell me it." He looked Watcher in the eye as he spoke, not backing down at all. "I know what happens when someone that high up disappears, I know how bad of a situation that would be for us. I am not some naive kid who needs their hand held."

Suddenly cutting himself off, Daniel drew in a deep breath and let it out slowly, "Alright, that's enough from me." He says, mouth twitching in a small smile, "No point in anger, now what about the rest of you? Anyone have any ideas for what we should do?"

"I agree, taking a wait and see may be the best option as it were," Wade began walking towards the ladder, grabbing one of the radios on his way, "We wait here for some new info and react from that, I'll take watch. Radio if something pops up."

So saying he ascended the stairs and sat at the edge, picking up the sniper rifle he checked to make sure it was still in good condition. It was decent enough, he looked thought the scope and activated his powers.

Rylie watched as the rest talked to each other, everyone keeping annoyance and irritation in check for the moment. At least that was progress.

"I know that is a lot of information to process and it doesn't all make the best sense but it is what we have to work with right now. We won't be able to do much with the missile but we seem to be in agreement about protecting it from someone setting it off and wiping everyone out."

Rylie looked them all over, no one immediately disagreeing with her. She shrugged slightly and rolled her shoulders. Talking took a lot out of a person.
---

In the city, about 10 miles from the warehouse a small skirmish had broken out. Members of the U.N.E and E.R.I.S. were engaged with a smaller gang. The gang had decided to make a stand, annoyed that the two groups had taken to patrolling their zone. The gang, the Londres jumped a patrolling group of E.R.I.S. soldiers. The gunfire drew the attention of U.N.E. "K Company".

K Company had a tendency to over react to situations so it came as no suprise to anyone but the Londres when they pulled out their big guns instead of assessing the situation properly. K Company immediately opened fire on anyone and anything in the vicinity of E.R.I.S. and the Londres.

Bullets and explosions rocked the area. Immediately, civilians headed inside, taking shelter and barricading themselves in where possible. It didn't take long before the streets contained no one but the fighting factions.

All sides began to take casualities. The Londres' taking the biggest hit to their numbers as they had so few to begin with. The fighting centred mostly between U.N.E and E.R.I.S. It wasn't long before the building showed signs of damage.

An apartment building, the one that E.R.I.S was using for cover took a lot of heavy artillery from K Company. Windows were blown out, bricks falling to the streets below.

A large explosion hit the second floor, blasting a hole and causing the floor to give way. A main support area had been hit and the upper floors of the building began to tremble. The building housed many residents as well as others who were hiding out until the fighting was over.

Another blast and the floors would not hold. A few more and the whole building might collapse in on itself. Calls on cellphones were placed from those inside and those watching, horrified as the fighting kept up, oblivious of the people inside the building.

Police, fire and ambulance were all sent to the area but none could get through as the military units kept them at bay. Time ticked by for those in the building. Every blast, every rumble threatened to send the entire thing to the ground.

Adana had heard the ruckus as the radio began to buzz, for no other reason than the fact that she was already on edge. There were pleas in the announcer's voice. He knew someone in that building, that burning building. He said that there was chaos, that people would die. Suddenly, everything seemed to become clear. Everything else didn't matter. Her entire goal was to help people, even if she couldn't figure out what sort of mess this was she could still save people. Her hand tightened around the doorknob. "People need help!" She said exasperated, breaking off running, shifting in mid-stride to a panther. Her muscles rippled under her fur as she disappeared out the house and into the streets, shifting again to a golden retriever, as to not draw attention to a large slinking cat.

She was running, running as fast as she could on four legs towards the column of smoke. Somewhere in the back of her mind Adana hoped that some of the so called heroes were following in her tracks, because she knew she couldn't do this alone. Even if she was able to get past the guards and fire and smoke, how was she to pull out the fire victims?

She slipped past the military units easily, acting like a confused dog trying to save their owner. Once inside her eyes began to burn. Coughing she shifted back to her human form to call out. "Hello?" Smoke was filling her lungs and burning her eyes. No animal could withstand this, not even Adana in all of her forms. Pushing through the cloud of smoldering ash and flame Adana stumbled through the fog of pain. There were cries of pain and torture coming from all ends. She couldn't concentrate. There was a child. A girl, maybe twelve or thirteen of age, clutching the hand of an even smaller child. Even if the other girl was only two years younger than Adana still her heart ached. "Come on." She urged, ripping off her own jacket to try and make the girl cover her mouth. This couldn't be healthy for either of them.

Adana could heal in other forms, these two couldn't. When neither of them moved Adana scooped up the younger one and cradled her carefully and urged the twelve year old to climb onto her back. This wasn't going to be pretty. The twelve year old was thin, thankfully, so it wasn't much for Adana to carry them both. It was still draining. There were more. Where was Rylie? "Rylie, Wade, Waren, Zoey..John...anyone.." she called out pathetically, finally making it to the doorway. She wouldn't be able to go back in as a human, not with so much debris in the air. She looked around through stinging eyes for help, clutching the sickly child in her grasp.

Wade looked down the scope of his rifle and watched as Adanna ran down the street in panther form, then he saw Masters follow the shape shifting girl down the street. Watcher decided to follow the pair and stood, keeping the rifle in his clutches he turned along the roof and started following from the rooftops. After a few moments of running he caught up and saw the blaze on the opposite side of the street. Noting Adanna exiting a burning building with children and Masters rushing into a second; Watcher hefted the sniper in his hands, aimed into he sky and fired. The crack of the sniper rifle stopped the fighting between the military and gang units and all eyes retested upon him.

"All of you! Stop fraking shooting each other and look around you! There are three buildings burning down right now, thanks to you! Now I suggest you stop trying to kill each other and start saving the fraking civilians!"

One of the gang members raised his gun and with another crack the gun exploded as a .50mm bullet slammed through it and into his hand. The man fell to the ground, clutching his hand as the others looked at him then back up to the Watcher on the roof, "Now you have two options, watch your neighborhood burn to the ground around you or save it and the people in it. U.N.E. personel, as a freelancer hired to assist in the city I formally request your assistance in saving the people trapped in the buildings. E.R.I.S personel I request your aid in this endeavor."

The gang members looked at their injured member, to the buildings, to Warhcer; they did this for a few moments and then looked amongst themselves and ran into the nearest building. The military forces watched them and looked up at the man with he high powered rifle and then as one ran into different buildings to begin the rescue.

Wade nodded to himself and slung the rifle onto his back, retreated on the roof he was on, then sprinted and leapt from the roof to a window several stories down. He crashed through the grass and tucked into a roll, barreled for a few more feet and came to rest on the balls of his feet. Looking around the room he noted the smoke and was thankful for the mask he wore. Wade walked through the doorway to the hall intent upon the rescue.

Rylie watched Adana bolt out of the room. "Ada...."

The girl was gone and John followed quickly on her heels. Rylie frowned and looked to Warren, Daniel and Zoey. Daniel made not motion to follow. With a glance at the remaining two, Rylie felt certain that knowing their distrust of the man that neither Zoey or Warren would be leaving him alone.

She walked slowly to the door. "I will...follow. They might need help. I don't know what made Adana bolt but I can't imagine it was good. We will be in contact." Rylie gave them all a quick curt nod and silently hoped the trio didn't turn to bickering and accusations while the others were gone.

Rylie took off in a run, trying to keep up with John. There was no way she could catch Adana but she could stay close enough to John to figure out where they were headed. Wade appeared as well. Ever watching. Rylie wasn't surprised he was joining in the chase. She wished she knew what it is they were running into.

By the time she came upon the scene Rylie was clenching her teeth. She should have known. It was bound to happen and these likely weren't the first civilian buildings to take heavy damage. Wade and John were busy, chaos and fighting was going on around them.

It hit Rylie like a hammer. Adana's call. She looked around trying to figure out exactly where the voice in her head was coming from. Wade and John were yelling to but she need to focus on Adana. The doorway was filled with small figure cradling another figure.

Rylie ran to the door. "Adana."

Wade watched as the soldiers and gang members dragged out the people from the burning buildings. He had directed them to check the buildings that his associates weren't checking and at least fifty people were now on the street, with Wade directing them toward more with his rad-sight. looking at the family he had saved earlier he made sure they were okay, the parents hugging the life out of their kids and the dog licking them all. Turning to the building that the others had gone in he saw Masters exiting the building with a woman with weird hair. Checking the buildings he saw that they were empty and he whistled loudly and shouted, "Alright everybody get to the other side of the street and wait for the authorities!" turning to the soldiers he asked them to return to their bases, which they did reluctantly. turning to the gang members he told them to ditch their weapons and help out. Most of them did that but several watched the soldiers leave with itchy trigger fingers.

Wade strode over to the others and told them, "the buildings are clear, we should probably get out of here before the cops start asking questions we have no interest in answering."
