Description

XXXXXXXXXXXXSorn Di Genova
―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
I soon learned that day that the limitations of vampires were fables put about by their own kind. They were no more afraid of garlic and crucifixes than cupcakes with extra frosting. They were particularly proud of the wooden stake rumor since they made awfully good kindling for the fires. Drinking blood was all so last century, there was nothing better for them than a freshly roasted human youth. Their favorite book is Twilight, not for the content but for the effect it had on teenage girls. They all wanted a romance with a vampire, and what vampire would say no? It was all they could do to prevent themselves from salivating as they walked them to the graveyard.

PRINCE KAL THELGO
═══════════════✧══════════════
═════════════════════════════════════════
The afternoon for Kal didn’t go as planned, but perhaps it was for the best. He’d fully intended on spending the night in his personal cabin, a gift he’d received from a fairy one eventful morning after the creature had found herself in a predicament and the prince had stepped in to help her. Unbeknownst to her, of course, that he had an entire water kingdom he could call his own. Kal chose not to tell her and accepted the unusual gift as his little getaway home. As much as he loved being on land, he could never stay for as long as he wanted, not unless he braved it out and slept on the street. Granted, sirens didn’t need sleep, but Kal quite enjoyed it.

He enjoyed a lot of human customs which his parents, as well as the majority of the sirens, considered “trivial”. This is why he’d been looking forward to spending some time out on the town for what remained of the day, and a peaceful night in his cabin. His encounter with the pretty warlock, however, reminded him that not everything outside the ocean waters was enchanting. Despite appearances, sirens and warlocks were still locked in a cold war. A rivalry that dated back centuries. Generations of hatred, at the point where no one truly knew where this hatred had started, but they knew well enough to not bring out the name in front of the rival.

If Kal said this feud didn’t scare him, he’d be a liar. Warlocks were known for their physical strength, their power, and militant structure. Sirens, on the other hand, never truly showed their virtues until the very moment they chose to strike. Being part of the species himself didn’t change the fact that Kal found the siren mind to be one of the most terrifying weapons. Unlike the warlocks who ruled with an iron fist, a siren gave no warnings and felt zero remorse. If the cold war were to ever escalate into anything more, Kal feared for any species that got in their way. And after what he’d just experienced, the probable destruction felt closer than ever. The image of the tattoo on the boy’s arm was etched into the back of the young prince’s mind. Surely he’d say something, surely the word would travel among the warlocks that a siren attempted to kill one of their own. All it took was a single feather to tip the scales. Kal could only hope that the boy would return his favor by not talking about what had happened in the ocean, but there truly wasn’t anything that obligated him to keep quiet.

Worry-filled thoughts kept him occupied the entirety of the way back home, so much so that he almost didn’t realize he’d reached the island. A couple of guards watched from the top of the grand steps that led to the palace doors as Kal peered over the edge of the quay. His gray eyes met their icy blues as he offered them an innocent smile before dipping back into the waters. He didn’t want to go inside just yet. Instead, he opted to take the long way around, headed for the moonpool nestled at the back of the palace, just below his bedroom.

LADY SORN DI GENOVA

The sun now hung low in the sky, casting shades of deep blues and purples over the town. It was a beautiful place, no doubt, but the only place Sorn had ever known. She couldn’t help but wonder sometimes if there were prettier places out there. Being the daughter of Count Ambrose Di Genova didn’t exactly give her a lot of freedom to travel. What little she did have, she had to practically fight fang and claw for. Being the Di Genova family’s one and only daughter meant so many things. To her parents, it meant that she had to not only be the best, but also marry the best. Her father had always had this unspoken obsession with his daughter marrying a royal. He’d tried, and miserably failed, to set her up several times. Eventually, she had no choice but to lie.

That brought her here, as she checked her hair in the mirror one last time, smoothing out any wrinkles in her elegant red dress, before heading out the bedroom doors. ”Where are you going now?”. Her father’s booming voice echoed throughout the walls of the large estate. He sat alone at one end of the lavish Rococo dining table, eyes never leaving the stack of papers in front of him as he spoke. It had always been like this, and sometimes Sorn wondered why the man ever bothered to pretend he cared.

”Where I always go, daddy dearest.” she placed a gentle kiss on his cheek before heading towards the door, two of the family guards following suit. ”Don’t wait up.”

The trek to the royal Warlock family home seemed to pass by in a blur. Perhaps it was due to the fact that Sorn spent the majority of it wondering why Nikola hadn’t responded to any of her messages. It was quite unusual, and the young vampire couldn’t decide if she was worried or excited to hear the story behind this. The Di Genova family guards stayed outside, as they typically did any time Sorn visited the castle. It would be no exaggeration to say that this was equivalent to Sorn’s second home. The King always welcomed her with open arms, and Sorn always made sure to tell him exactly what he wanted to hear. ”Good evening to my favorite magical beings.” her voice announced her presence as she stepped inside, hoping that Nikola was in fact here and her trip hadn’t been in vain.

PRINCE KAL THELGO
═══════════════✧══════════════
═════════════════════════════════════════
As expected, the first words out of Iria’s mouth were about Kal’s well being. The prince couldn’t exactly pin her for it, considering it was her job to protect him. At this point in their life, however, Iría was much more than just his bodyguard. Kal trusted her, even with things such as this. He looked to her for advice. More than a guard, she was a good friend. The kind of friend that the young prince needed right at that moment. He was thankful that Iría seemed to pick up on that, because she chose not to lecture him, but instead commended him for what he’d done.

As far as warlocks went, Kal only knew what he was told. He’d never truly met one in person, but he’d been on land enough times to have heard other creatures talk about them. He’d heard both good and bad, unlike what was usually said about sirens. No one truly knew the sea creatures, and Kal wondered if that too was the case for the witches of the land. He could tell Iría was making it a point to make them sound scary and sinister, but that’s not what Kal had witnessed. There was no sense of malice in the boy’s eyes, no anger or bloodlust, only fear.

”I don’t know who did it…” he muttered as he watched the moon’s reflection on the water before him. The night time had come a little quicker than most days. ”What I do know is…that I’ve never seen someone look so…scared.” The young warlock’s features were engraved into Kal’s memory. His reaction, and the utter terror that drove him to try and run away the moment his eyes caught the siren prince. Those were the kind of things he’d never forget, regardless of whether he saw the warlock again or not.

Maybe he’d made a mistake. Maybe the first thing the warlock would do once he got back was tell of his near death experience. Sirens were hard to reach, but not impossible. Maybe come morning there would be ships crowding their territory, ready to seek revenge. There was a chance that Kal’s act of kindness would lead to a full on war between the rivaling creatures. The young prince hadn’t the slightest idea what was to come next, but he knew for certain that if he hadn’t saved that boy he would’ve regretted it for years to come.

”Anyway, I’m fine. He didn’t try to hurt me.” the prince concluded in hopes of easing Iria’s nerves despite not being able to ease his own. ”but I didn’t get to go check on the cabin.” he noted before turning his gaze towards her, eyes suddenly sparkling with excitement. ”Do you want to come with me tomorrow?”

LADY SORN DI GENOVA
═══════════════✧══════════════
═════════════════════════════════════════
To say that Sorn was mortified would be an understatement. The way Nikola told the story made it sound like the sirens didn’t need to lift a single finger to attack him. This only further confirmed the stories she’d heard about said creatures and their ability to, quite literally, charm one to death. The more she listened, the further her concern grew. It sounded like something out of a nightmare, the kind of thing that would keep you up for nights on end. The fear was still very real to her prince, so much so that she could almost feel it herself.

And then in an instant, everything changed. He was no longer speaking out of a place of fear, but rather amazement, as he spoke about the siren that saved him. Sorn listened in silence, taking in her best friend’s every word accompanied by small gestures. She hadn’t realized she’d formed a smile as she listened, but something about the way Nikola described this nameless creature made her feel giddy with excitement. She especially perked up at his statement about wanting to find the mystery man that saved his life.

She moved closer to the window where he stood, carefully placing her hands on his shoulders. Her smile had now faded, and was replaced with a stern look as she turned him to face her directly. ”Nik...do you realize what you’re saying? There’s more water on this earth than there is land. He could be anywhere in the world come tomorrow morning. You don’t even know his name and running away to the ocean again is going to be almost impossible.” she folds her arms across her chest, gaze still fixed on the prince. ”You’re not going to be able to find him.” her statement is immediately followed by a devious smile as she leans in a bit closer. ”Not unless you let me help!”.

As risky as it may sound, it had been a while since Sorn had seen Nikola so passionate about anything that wasn’t impressing his father. Not to mention the fact that this went against every single principle the warlocks stood for, something the king would most certainly not be pleased with, yet Nikola was willing to take the risk. That on its own was enough to motivate Sorn. She was determined to help her prince find his siren.

”I have one question though.” she lifted an index finger, making sure she had the prince’s attention before continuing to speak. ”If and when we find him...what do you plan on doing?”

Nikola couldn’t sleep all night, his thoughts were enraptured by the siren. He’d never been so stuck on one person, especially a man at that. The thought of the siren had used some sort of magic never crossed his mind. His thoughts were consumed solely for curiosity. Plus, he knew one thing was certain, no one had lied when they told him sirens were the most beautiful creatures one could see. The problem for everyone that saw a siren wasn’t the certainty that they would not live to tell the tale of their beauty. Nikola believed that was the reason his war-hungry father hadn’t started fighting them. There was a weak truce between the two species, simply for the fact that they didn’t know how to fight sirens.

In the morning, his dresser was surprised to find him still awake. Nikola enjoyed sleeping, it was much better than the grogginess that hit him as he stood to be dressed. ”Your majesty wishes you to meet a few lovely ladies today before your training, Prince Nikola,” His dresser explained the finer clothing.

The prince held back an eye roll at the thought of having to schmooze some snobby wannabe princesses who didn’t know how to hold a conversation. He hadn’t had potential spouses come to the palace in a while, considering his father thought Sorn was the most eligible woman to marry his only son. He wasn’t sure why he would make Nikola meet more women when he’d told Nikola plenty of times to keep Sorn around.

But, he had no choice; not only would his father force him to anyway, after the night before, he needed to make sure he was in his father’s good graces. He did what he could to please his father, being the heir to the throne since his two sisters would not be eligible by kingdom law. Nikola was never able to fully please his father, and he worried if he did find the siren, how he would react.

Breakfast was just the royal family, and Nikola noticed that his sisters were in their fine clothes as well. ”Nikola, I trust you’re feeling better after your rebellious outing yesterday,” The king announced as soon as he entered the room, causing Nikola to keep his head down as he sat to the table and ignored his sisters’ incredulous looks. ”Yes, father.” He answered quietly, not wanting to touch on the subject again, especially with his sisters in the room.

But, breakfast was spent with his father berating him, making sure he understood there would be stricter regulations on his traveling privileges, amongst other privileges his father knew he enjoyed. ”Until you prove to me that you are behaving like a proper prince should,” His father ended his second lecture, leaving Nikola and his sisters to endure the courtship or strangers.

Apparently some royals from another land were visiting the kingdom, and they had two daughters, as well as several sons. One of the princesses was obviously disinterested in the warlock prince, but the younger of the two was practically throwing herself at Nikola and making him extremely uncomfortable. Unfortunately, there was not much he could do, but both of his sisters looked at him sympathetically. His eldest sister Penelope seemed to hit it off well with one of the princes, while his older sister Guinevere enjoyed the attention of the rest of the princes.

It made Nikola quite thankful for his training. Training was one of the few things Nikola was required to do that he sincerely enjoyed. It took his mind off of the visiting princesses, and the siren man too. He could focus solely on improving his magic skills and swordsmanship.

He was coming in from training when Sorn started their plan to get him out of the palace. Although his traveling had been restricted this morning, it appeared his father was weak to Sorn’s charm. ”Nikola, I’m allowing you to travel to Lady Di Genova’s estate for dinner tonight. I expect you back here once you are finished.”

Nikola quickly changes back into his fine clothes and gets out of the palace before his father changes his mind. ”I’ve been looking forward to this all day.” Nikola hums with excitement as they pass through the palace gates. He still wasn’t quite sure where to start, but he figured they could make their way through the villages and if they ran out of time today, they would have to make another excuse to get him out of the palace.

Iria didn’t usually sleep except for the few occasions every few months where she felt like it would help. She was a bit nervous about joining Kal up on the land, but she was concerned about the warlock still and wanted to be sure that he was protected. Plus, she had heard that fairies were beautiful creatures, and she wouldn’t mind bumping into one on the way to Kal’s cabin.

Mornings were usually taken for Kal’s future wives, though the thought of any of those women actually marrying Kal would make Iria laugh. She used to stand guard but it was a waste of her time when palace guards could protect Kal just fine and she could work on her other duties and keeping her training frequent to be at the top of her game. It wasn’t like Kal truly had a need for a bodyguard, considering his own level of skill. She figured it was the queen making extra precautions for his safety, considering Iria had enough healing abilities should something ever happen to Kal, and she always prayed that would never be the case.

Iris used the morning to practice her swordsmanship, working on one of the training decks. She wanted to be a good fighter, more than just a charmer. There was one time she went to land without Kal, and it was only to persuade a gifted swordsman to make her a special sword. She carried it with her everywhere, boasting from her hip as she fulfilled her duties.

Iris finished her training and met Kal at the moon pool as promised, already working on a speech in her head on why this wasn’t a good idea. Unfortunately for her, Kal sprung into the water and gave her no chance to convince him to stay. It was all she could do to keep up, he was a speedier swimmer than she was. It had been a while since she’d gone up to land, probably since she visited the swordsman. Her legs were slightly wobbling as she first stepped onto the sand, but adjusted quickly and took on her glamour she made when she visited the swordsman.

”Lead the way, your highness. Let’s see this cabin of yours.”

Thankfully, Sorn knew him well enough to know when one particular topic was consuming his thoughts. She was right, he was overthinking it, especially with the little chance that they would find the siren. He followed her instructions to breathe deeply, which allowed him to temporarily calm his mind. Though the image of the siren in his full glory, staring at him with curiosity and concern, that made a permanent place in his thoughts since the very moment it happened. He could picture every detail of this siren but yet knew next to nothing about him. Not even his name.

”I’ve told you everything I know. I mean, I was unconscious half the time we were together,” Nikola replies, and it reminds him that he really doesn’t know how to find this siren. He wasn’t even sure if this search trip was a good idea, considering if they got lost or actually met the siren, he could end up arriving past his father’s curfew and being locked away until his father was satisfied he learned his lesson. But the threat of that did not deter him as they pushed forward. ”I guess we’ll have to start by the ocean, maybe he’ll come up on land if he sees me again.”

He had told himself he wasn’t afraid of the ocean, but the moment they stepped onto the sand he froze in his tracks. He could almost picture the icy blue eyes staring at him again, waiting to pull him in and actually kill him this time. He grabs onto Sorn’s arm, taking a moment to steady himself, before moving towards the water and the rock where he had first laid eyes on his siren savior.

Nikola wasn’t surprised that there weren’t any siren sightings, which he was partially relieved. On one hand, he didn’t see his siren, but he also didn’t see any sirens wanting to pull him under again. He’d revealed his tattoo while they waited, hoping his siren would see the familiar markings and pop his head up. He wasn’t sure how much sirens learned about warlocks, but the white tattoos were reserved for the royal warlock family. And each one was unique to the warlock, molded by their magical essence and ink into a pattern. Maybe that was why the siren left so quickly, he knew Nikola was a royal and didn’t want to start a war. ”We’ve stayed here as long as we can. We should head back now.”

”I’m sorry, your highness, but I’m much more beautiful than you,” Iria teases the prince, enjoying the fabric of the human clothing much more than she thought. Kal’s clothing was almost a perfect size for her, and it made her feel more confident about this land trip. Iris cocked her head curiously as he asked her if she trusted him. She wasn’t sure if he was serious or not, but she was when she answered. ”I trust you with my life, Prince Kal.”

She wasn't sure what she was expecting from this trip. She told herself she joined Kal purely out of his own safety, though she knew that he’d gone plenty of times without her. If she was truthful, she was curious. She’d heard so much about land dwellers, different species and foreign items, there was so much to explore. Plus, there would be female land dwellers, and she wouldn’t mind getting a look at a few of them. It was a chance to walk amongst other species and not be the feared sirens they always were. And she could always tell Kal that she was ‘sizing up the enemy’, though the siren prince could usually read her well enough to know that the excuse wasn’t necessarily truthful.

The large vehicle made her a bit nervous, which Kal must have been able to tell because he tried to reassure her. ”You say that about your training too and I’ve seen the way you practice,” Iria answers, though she joins him on the motorbike anyway, clinging to him as they made their way to one of the human villages.

═══════════════✧══════════════
═════════════════════════════════════════
The small town bustled with excitement around them as Kal pulled Iría along. The different smells of the human food filled his nostrils with delight. Perhaps his slight obsession with land cuisine was a little odd to most, especially considering Sirens didn’t need to eat any tangible substance. They fed off the souls of the innocent, or so that’s what they were taught from a young age. However, from the moment Kal had first tasted the deep fried delicacies he’d fallen in love. ”Two corndogs please!” he called out to the man behind the stall. He never did figure out whether the oval shaped food was made of actual dogs or not, but he convinced himself that they weren’t if only to keep his conscience clear. He also hoped Iría wouldn’t ask as the man nodded and began to prepare his order. Thankfully, Iría seemed to be distracted. By a very pretty distraction nonetheless. As per usual, the siren girl apologized for Kal’s excited antics, which the young prince just brushed off and quickly turned to take possession of his food.

Sorn merely smiled, the woman’s beauty nearly leaving her speechless. ”I can’t say I blame him. This stall has the best snacks in town.” she giggled, almost flirtatiously. She opened her mouth to place an order for herself and Nikola, But was interrupted by a subtle tug of her arm. She slowly turned to the prince, immediately taking in the nerves that danced on his features. ”I think...I think that’s him. Sorn blinked in bewilderment. Him? Surely he didn’t mean the siren they’d risked going to the ocean for. It couldn’t be. It almost felt too easy.

”Excuse us one moment.” she said politely. Her statement directed at both, but mainly for the mysteriously beautiful woman which she hoped wouldn’t leave before at least giving Sorn her name. She quickly turned to Nikola, her gaze somewhat lingering on the dark haired male behind them for a moment. ”You’re telling me that’s the guy we just spent hours looking by the ocean for…?” she asked, still in disbelief, as she stole another quick glance at the young man. He was stunningly beautiful, yes, but didn’t exactly match Nikola’s description. ”I thought you said he had silver hair? Then again it could be some sort of glamour…” she muttered the second half more to herself than anything before quietly gesturing for Nikola to follow her lead.

”Alright, we’ll have two shakes and two of those adorable little sandwiches.” she called over the stall before turning back to the pretty girl. ”I’m Sorn.” she casually adds in then quickly gestures towards the prince. ”This is Nikola.” Amidst her introduction, the supposed siren joins them. Despite never having met them before, Sorn is almost certain that he is in fact the creature they’ve been looking for. There’s something about him, as well as his beautiful companion, that doesn’t quite fit with the other humans.

Kal had never met the red headed woman, but he is almost certain he’s seen the male before. Once he joined the group to get a closer look, his lips outstretched into a playful smile. ”Well I certainly didn’t expect to see you again so soon.” he said, promptly ignoring any odd looks from the girls. ”I’ve gotta say, you look much more handsome when you’re not on the brink of death.” His tease, followed by a bite of food, did not go unnoticed by the red head as she giggled quietly, her eyes searching the warlock’s face for any reaction. This was most definitely not what she’d expected from the mysterious siren savior.

LADY SORN DI GENOVA

═════════════════════════════════════════
Sorn could feel the nervous adrenaline radiating from Nikola’s body beside her. Enough to raise her eyebrows in suspicion. The young boy, Kal, seemed nice enough, sure. But wasn’t that exactly how sirens worked? An abundance of beauty sprinkled with charm and witty compliments, and you’d willingly die for them. Needless to say, her concern matched that of the pretty woman that accompanied him as she began to connect the dots. Of course, they were obviously concerned for very different reasons. But unlike her, Sorn refrained from saying anything. Not only was she aware of how much the young prince wanted to find this siren boy, and didn’t want to ruin his moment, but she had always known Nikola to be level headed. Out of the two of them, he had always been the one to follow rules. Even though he was obviously ignoring all the possible dangers that surrounded this boy, Sorn was confident that he wouldn’t push the limits.

“Looking for me?” Kal asked, his voice lined with curious mischief. What could a warlock possibly want with him, other than to kill him. Though if that were the case, Kal doubted this boy, Nikola as he was so formally introduced, would have been so vocal about the search. “Well, here I am.” He adds, a shadow of a playful smile still lingering. “Now what?” There wasn’t much they could do in the middle of a public street, crowded with humans of all shapes and sizes. Still, he wondered what the warlock’s intentions were. Though he wasn’t given much of a chance to hear the answer, as Iría was already tugging at his arm to get his attention. Once again, she warned him of the dangers of warlocks. Dangers that Kal was fully aware of, most especially on land.

Sirens may have ruled the seas for centuries but Warlocks had long since reigned over all magical and supernatural forms on land. He and iría, should anything happen, would be at a disadvantage. A soft sigh left Kal’s lips as he agreed. “You’re right.” He muttered. Much like always, Iría was always his voice of reason, however just like most of those other times, Kal chose to ignore it. “Have time for a walk?” His question was mostly directed towards the warlock, though his lady friend Sorn was more than welcome to join them. Perhaps it would keep Iría distracted long enough for Kal to figure out why mister tall, powerful and handsome had been searching for him after having been together for less than two minutes.

Sorn quickly turned to Nikola, her resolution to not interfere beginning to waver. Especially after hearing the beautiful girl, Iría, refer to Kal as “your highness”. It was quiet, and faint enough to have Sorn question whether she had even heard it correctly or at all. Her gaze searched Nikola for any signs of whether he too had heard it or not, because if he had they were in even more of a dangerous territory than they had originally thought. Sorn wasn’t too familiar with the siren hierarchy, but she knew for a fact that the term “your highness” was universally used for royalty. She decided to give Nikola a chance to answer, seeing as the question was mostly directed at him. She only hoped that his excitement wouldn’t cloud his judgement. As happy as she was that her best friend found who he’d been looking for within such a short amount of time, the longer they stayed out the more at risk of being caught they were. The last thing Sorn wanted was to be separated from Nikola, knowing he’d be locked up for who knows how long.

Kal, in turn, was in no hurry. Despite Iria's verbal and physical warnings, there was a subtle desire in him to know more about this warlock. Mainly, why he'd been searching for Kal in the first place. Surely he hadn't gone to the trouble just to thank him for saving his life. There had to be a motive, and the aura of mystery around that as well as around the Warlock himself was what pulled Kal in like a magnet. He hoped Iria wouldn't be too upset with him. She'd always known the young prince for taking delight in adventure. Kal's wandering spirit had always taken him to things and places no other siren had ever experienced, one of those being a life among the humans. Though he didn't want to shout victory too soon, he'd never been in a complicated situation he hadn't been able to get out of. He had no reason to think this time would be no different, after all, it was just a simple walk.

Nikola barely heard his friends’ warning, and against his better nature, ignored her and the lingering worry in the back of his mind that he shouldn’t be here, that he shouldn’t have searched for the siren in the first place.

Nikola was intrigued by this siren, that he’d known for days now. But finding him on land with a girl by his side just raised more questions for him. He was sure a lot of the things he’d been taught about sirens were false, but the few bits of information he was sure of told him that sirens were much less powerful on land, especially the farther they removed themselves from the water. Still, it seemed as if Kal wanted to be on the land amongst the humans. There was so much about him that went against everything he knew about sirens, and Nikola only wanted to learn more.

Plus, something about Kal drew Nikola to him. It wasn’t just the fact that he wanted to know why Kal saved him, but it was more of a feeling that made Nikola want to see him more. He didn’t feel like the prince he failed to be, but just another person. Of course, the siren probably had no clue that he was talking to the warlock prince, and Nikola would be careful to keep it that way for as long as he possibly could. He didn’t understand why he felt this way around a boy who barely knew him, it was just a feeling in his chest finding him again.

He was distracted from his thoughts when Kal answered him, and the reason why he saved him was not as noble or in depth as Nikola thought it would be. Nikola shouldn’t have expected more, but at the same time, the answer suited the siren walking beside him. From the little he knew, he seemed to be the type to act on instinct rather than purpose. And whatever the reason, he saved Nikola from an unfulfilled life ended by death, and the warlock prince was grateful for that.

Before Nikola could ask any further questions, the siren had his own for Nikola. Why were you looking for me? It was an answer he wasn’t sure he had. ”I don’t know,” were the first words that slipped from his mouth, giving him enough time to think over why he was so hellbound on searching and finding Kal. He’d thought so much about where to look and the things he might say, but the reason why was something that never crossed his mind.

”I couldn’t stop thinking about you since the day you saved me,” Nikola continues after thinking over his next words, ”You’re nothing like what I was taught about sirens, and I wanted to know more. And I know you saw the tattoo on my arm, so I didn’t understand why you would save me- I’m grateful, of course, but… I don’t know,” Nikola sighs, running a hand through his hair and turning his eyes to the scenery around them instead of the siren as he admits with a growing blush, ”Part of me just wanted to see you again. You’re quite beautiful, you know..”

Sirens only created more sirens out of necessity. They weren’t immortal beings, and those who cared about their family name made sure that at least it would live on forever if they couldn’t. Some sirens made bonds with their offspring, treated them as family, but Iria had never known that kind of bond.

Her parents did as any siren would do, created their own offspring. As a female siren, they craved to obtain the power of nobility through a marriage of their only child. Iria was written off to be someone else’s responsibility when a marriage was arranged to an old siren Duke. He’d only wanted her for her beauty, standing out amongst most sirens, but she wanted more for herself. She wanted to be strong and powerful on her own, and one day while visiting the palace as the Duke’s future wife, she protected the youngest prince from what could have been a nasty accident and got herself a position as a trusted bodyguard for Prince Kal. Not only was she away from the man she didn’t want to marry, but Kal became more than her prince, he was her best friend.

Watching him walk away with a warlock, alone, it made her angry and scared. It didn’t matter how nice the warlock boy was, that was her siren prince and the two species had always been sworn enemies. She had half a mind to run after them, but decided against raising suspicion among the humans and turned to the girl, Sorn. She was quite lovely, which did stem some of the anger she felt as it was mainly directed towards Nikola rather than his friend. ”I know Nikola is a warlock, Kal told me. Are you one as well?” Iria asks low enough that the humans wouldn’t be able to hear them.

She moves back to lean against Kal’s motorcycle, wanting to be out of the way of any wandering ears or eyes that would interrupt her conversation with the girl. Iria didn’t think that Sorn was a warlock, given the energies between her and the warlock boy were different, but she wasn’t exactly human either and that made Iria suspicious. Why were these two looking for the prince?

”Why is he looking for Kal anyway? Considering the near death experience he had, I wouldn’t have thought he could even be near an ocean again. Not like he should be anyway,” Iria continues to interrogate the warlock’s companion, determined to get as much information from her as to figure out how much of a threat the two would be to herself and Kal. She knew on land they were at a disadvantage, though she would protect Kal with her life if she had to.

PRINCE KAL THELGO
═══════════════✧══════════════

Charmimg others was nothing strange for Kal. In fact, this could almost be said to be built into the siren DNA. Though he’d been told many times that his way of speaking combined with his quick wits and beauty was strong enough to persuade even other sirens into submission. But Kal had never tried to be that way, he’d always just simply been himself. Reckless, dramatic, driven by instinct rather than purpose and perhaps that’s exactly what drew others towards him. At the very least, it seemed to be what drove Nikola to trying to find him.

Truth be told, when saving the warlock, Kal had acted on pure impulse. Something that had long since been part of his nature. He didn’t stop for a moment to think of the possible consequences that would come from it. Just as he told Nikola. He had the means to save him, so he did. It was truly that simple. Not to mention he wouldn’t have been able to forgive himself if he saw this drowning boy and ignored him knowing he could have easily helped. He could have also missed out on this opportunity to meet a warlock in person, and to find out that just as he thought, the world outside the ocean knew nothing about how sirens truly were.

”So you wanted to search for me because of my beauty?” Kal smirked as he watched the warlock’a cheeks flush pink. ”I’ve gotta admit I expected a much more profound answer.” he teased, not particularly caring whether this was the real reason the boy had been drawn to him or not. His attention remained on their common point of interest. It seemed like neither species truly knew the other. Though if all warlocks were like Nikola, it would be difficult for Kal to understand why they were deemed the enemy in the first place. ”I don’t believe in that ancient sworn enemies stuff” he admitted. ”As far as I’m concerned, you’re just another innocent life that didn’t deserve to end.” This is something he had also talked about with Iría before. Kal had never understood the reasoning behind a centuries long feud. the past should always be left in the past but both sides insisted in maintaining this rivalry, and for what? There was nothing gained on either side, only fear and hatred.

”So then tell me.” he came to a stop in front of Nikola, his eyes catching the taller boy’s gaze which was obviously trying to focus on anything but him. The image of the drowning boy flooded Kal’s mind and in that moment he felt an inexplicable sense of relief that he’d been the one to find him, and not the sirens that had attempted to kill him in the first place. He could see the fear in Nikola’s eyes in that moment very clearly, as well as the distinct tattoo that covered his arm. ”What exactly have you been told about us, your majesty?”

LADY SORN DI GENOVA
═══════════════✧══════════════
═════════════════════════════════════════
Sorn felt an unsettling sense of nervousness the moment Nikola disappeared with Kal. She could have completely chalked it up to her worrying for his safety, but she knew that wasn’t the case. The moment her eyes unintentionally caught Iria’s she knew the girl had a lot to do with it. It wasn’t fear, as would be expected when in the presence of a siren. No, it was jitters. The kind one felt on a first date, or in Sorn’s case, the kind she felt when attracted to someone. [b]”I know Nikola is a warlock. Kal told me. Are you one as well?”[/color] though her question was stern, and just seconds prior she’d been glaring daggers towards Nikola, there was an underlying softness to her voice.

Sorn couldn’t help but to smile a bit as the girl continues with her questions, not giving her much of a chance in edgewise. Somehow, Iría was both nothing and exactly what Sorn imagined a siren would be. She was painfully beautiful, a bit intimidating and obviously very level headed. But there was a kind, softer undertone to her words that Sorn hadn’t expected to hear. ”There’s no hidden motive, if that’s what you’re worried about.” the redhead finally spoke, her eyes glancing in the direction the boys had walked off to. ”Niko is very grateful for what Kal did. As am I. We may not be blood relatives, we may not even be the same species, but Nikola is like family. I don’t know what I’d do without him” the vampire explained, being as transparent as she could. It was obvious that Iría didn’t trust them, and in all honesty, Sorn didn’t fully trust either. However, that didn’t change the fact that the two owed Kal a great debt.

”I’m only here to make sure he makes it back home safely.” Sorn adds, knowing Iría could at least understand that. She wanted nothing more than to befriend this beautiful siren girl, despite common sense telling her it was a terrible idea. ”So now that we know none of us are human, let me formally introduce myself.” the redhead chimes, features illuminating with excitement. ”Sorn Di Génova, Nikola’s best and only vampire friend”

Nikola hadn’t quite realized what he’d said until Kal said it like that, and he couldn’t help but flush at the siren’s words. Neither of them had a profound reason for finding each other, and yet here they were together again. Nikola was just glad that this time he wasn’t on the brink of death and needing to be saved. And he had no witty reply; he wasn’t used to talking to a handsome boy like this.

Him and Sorn were familiar enough to have casual conversations, but everyone else treated him as a fragile prince that couldn’t be normal. His father only saw him as a disappointment. His sisters were too involved in their own arrangements to ever have a proper conversation. And the rest were too aware of his status to ever treat him as equal. In most people’s eyes, he was a superior being just because of his parents, even without seeing his true magical ability. That was why Sorn was his only friend, she made him feel like just another person. He was starting to feel this way with Kal too, even though the two barely knew each other.

And Kal seemed to have the same curiosity as he did, wanting to know if this rivalry their species shared with one another was truly worth it. Nikola could admit that they were probably both outliers, considering Nikola was not what first came to mind when warlocks were mentioned. He was sure anyone would think of his father: a mountain of a man with a terrifying control of the darkness. That was how their family stayed on the throne for years, arranging their sons with powerful women to make them the most powerful creatures to roam the Earth.

Kal was also not the first thing that came to mind, rather, the sirens that stole Nikola from the land painted a better picture of what Nikola had been told of sirens. Dangerously beautiful, and could make anyone their prey with just a pretty look. He knew all too well their power, which was another reason why Kal intrigued him.

The siren in question planted himself in front of Nikola and locked his gaze, leaving Nikola no choice but to look down at him. His eyes widened as Kal called him that name reserved only for royalty. ”How did you…?” Nikola whispers, subconsciously clutching to his arm where his tattoo was safely hidden under the fabric. He wasn’t sure if the two sirens attacked him knew it was a royal mark, but Kal certainly did. ”You must know then that my father would have told me whatever he needed to keep me away from the ocean,” Nikola adds, keeping Kal’s gaze as his always wandering mind started to ramble out of his mouth.

”Warlock children are warned of sirens coming to pull them away into the water if they didn’t listen to their parents. We were always taught that sirens were evil creatures who could only think of bloodlust. The ‘demons of the sea’. I almost believed it when… those two…” Nikola’s mind flashes to that day, the two pairs of eyes pulling him in and the claws that dragged him down.

Only for the sense of dread to be replaced by relief, looking back to the siren in front of him. ”You saving me has made me question everything I know.” Nikola finishes with a soft, hopeful smile. He was going against everything he knew and all the warning signs, but Kal was there to continue pulling him into the unknown, where he could learn what the world was truly like outside of the suffocating warlock castle walls.

It had been some time since Iria actually felt attraction for someone. Being around the prince meant she saw many beautiful women, hoping to be his bride, but she was honestly quite bored of the ‘siren beauty’. The main reason she followed Kal up to land was to see what other kind of beauty was out there. There were plenty of fair ladies around the village they had picked, but the moment she saw the flash of red hair, Sorn Di Genova caught her eye.

Her being with the warlock Kal saved only complicates things, but now that they were away from the two boys, she could admire Sorn more. She definitely seemed more like Kal and less like the warlock Nikola. Though it was obvious she shares the same concern Iria has, only for Nikola, watching the two boys walk off. She didn’t trust either of them, but she could understand that they weren’t that different from each other. ”Kal is really the only friend I have. So please excuse me if I come off overprotective. He’s like a young brother, I love him dearly but he can be, quite frankly, an idiot sometimes,” Iria sighs as she responds to Sorn’s comments about her relationship with Nikola.

It was bad, but she felt better knowing that the two weren’t romantic in any way. This wasn’t an ideal situation for any of them, it would be dangerous if either side found out of the species mingling like this. Still, she was amused by this girl, who identified herself as a vampire. ”Vampire, huh?” Iria murmurs, looking the girl up and down. She wasn’t as knowledgeable about this species, and was curious how a vampire came to befriend a warlock. Though if she remembered properly, warlocks were able to coexist with most other species, just not the sirens.

”Iria. I’m still Kal’s only friend, siren or not.” Iria says with just a hint of a smirk, folding her arms over her chest and examining the vampire in front of her. ”So, Sorn, how does a vampire become friends with a warlock?”

PRINCE KAL THELGO
═══════════════✧══════════════
When it came to warlock royalty, Kal didn’t know all, but the pointers he’d been taught if it ever came to a point where he’d have to defend himself against them on land had been enough to identify Nikola as one. Sirens were avid believers of avoiding physical confrontations with warlocks wherever possible, though were taught how to fight them if necessary, but the main lessons were that members of the royal warlock family not only specialized in certain types of magic, but were also marked with a tattoo. One that was distinct to the rest of the warlock species. Kal had recognized it on the spot the day before when he first met Nikola, as he’d spent hours studying about what they meant. If there was one thing about the young prince that was true to the siren nature, it was his knowledge. Trained to not only know about the world around him, but also know how to manipulate and use it to his advantage. On top of that, Kal had something most sirens didn’t. Experience.

He’d spent enough time on land to know which lessons were true to fact, and which needed to be tweaked a bit. He’d met just about every species imaginable. And now, he’d finally met a warlock in person. When it came down to it, even on land, Kal was not at a large disadvantage. He had both the books and street smarts necessary to protect himself, and if he truly wanted to, could easily persuade Nikola to do as he pleased. Ironically enough, believed him to be the most harmless. The thought made Kal chuckle quietly. In truth, he would never hurt Nikola. It would go against everything he believed in. But he had the means to easily do it, and that is what made the situation so amusing.
Kal hummed in response to Nikola’s tellings about how sirens were painted as evil beings, but he couldn’t disagree. What Nikola was told wasn’t too far from the truth, even if it didn’t specifically apply to Kal himself. ”Don’t be so quick to let your guard down.” Kal warned as he continued to walk. ”Just because I helped you doesn’t mean others will. In fact...most of that is true.” There was a very low, almost non-existent chance that any other siren he met would do what Kal did. ”Besides…” Kal slowed down his pace, glancing up at Nikola as he spoke his next sentence. ”What makes you so sure this isn’t all part of my elaborate plan to kill you?” He was joking, of course, though he wasn’t sure if Nikola would realize it.

LADY SORN DI GENOVA
═══════════════✧══════════════
Sorn was rather surprised at how quickly Iria’s anger seemed to dwindle. If she had to guess, she’d say it was most;y directed towards Nikola. Of course the vampire was fully aware of the bad blood between the species, so she knew better than to take said anger personally. Were she one of the too, she would most likely be weary herself. Iria, however, seemed to relax a little as they spoke. She explained her relationship with Kal, and Sorn was oddly relieved. She wanted to believe it was because she didn’t want to see Nikola heartbroken by the news that his siren boy was spoken for. However, deep down she knew that it was more of her being glad Iria wasn’t. At least that’s what she hoped.

She could fully relate to the siren’s explanation of why she was protective of Kal, though Sorn wouldn’t exactly say Nikola was an idiot. In fact, out of the two, she often tended to be that. ”An idiot, huh? I’ve always thought sirens to be mentally superior to other species.” Sorn joked. Of course she knew what the girl meant. Five minutes spent with Kal was enough to confirm it. He appeared to be whimsical, the type to often find himself in trouble. The exact opposite of Nikola. Though Sorn knew there were a million ways this could end badly, perhaps spending some time with him was just what Nikola needed. If anything, it would be a fresh change from his life spent within the warlock castle walls.

”Well…” Sorn hummed, Iria’s question filling her head. ”Honestly, they don’t.” she admits, briefly recalling how she and Nikola had met. ”Warlocks are not the type to make friends with anyone, and if I’m being honest, Niko is the only one I actually like.” there was a slight smirk playing on her lips. Though it was a bit of an exaggeration, it wasn’t a lie. Sorn had met many warlocks during her young vampire life, and most were arrogant, a-class assholes. Nikola had stood out to her the second they met. At first she thought it was due to a crush, but in the end realized it was because he was kind, caring, humble unlike most of his people.

”We met at a banquet. I was very young, but old enough to know when someone was being ingenuine. And then I met Niko. He didn’t fit in with the rest, and I liked that.” the retelling of the story almost made Sorn worry for her prince’s safety again. She knew he was easily persuaded, siren or not. ”I’m sure since that day, our parents have wanted us to get married.” she added with a giggle. ”But unfortunately, we’re not each other’s types.” she didn’t want to give too many details to this girl she’d known for less than ten minutes, but she did hope that Iria could read between the lines.
