At a very young age, Miles was introduced to some wildly different and admittedly unhealthy ways of showing affection, leaving him with a rather skewed idea of what it means to love and be loved. It leads him to behave in ways that most normal people might deem inappropriate, since he seems to possess very little understanding of the concept of physical or emotional boundaries. This shows in sometimes fairly subtle ways, and other times it's almost painfully overbearing. The bottom line, however, is that Miles will seek out an emotional connection wherever he can find one, perhaps as a way to substitute the attention that his mother once so generously afforded him. It's been exceptionally difficult for him to move away from the perceived comfort of the home in which he was raised and suddenly find himself surrounded by people who either can't understand him, or simply don't have the inclination to try.
Miles struggles with weighing up moral decisions and will heavily lean towards those fuelled by emotion more so than logic, meaning he is not always the most consistent in his actions or opinions. However, itβs always at least subtly apparent that he means well, and will often act in accordance with what he believes is in the best interest of those he holds dear. He so desperately wants to be seen as someone capable and worthy, but his choices very rarely yield the results he intended, giving him the reputation of someone who continually does more harm than good.
There is also the matter of other people's emotions, which he has little choice but to sense and draw from, as a result of his mother's so-called 'gift'. There are certain coping mechanisms Miles uses these days to prevent himself from becoming overwhelmed (fidgeting, over-stimulation, repetition of phrases, etc.) but there are also times that an emotion becomes so overpowering, it in turn becomes mirrored in his own demeanour. If the mood is low, he'll seem more lethargic than usual; whereas if someone is angry, he may become more irritable.
