"Say hello to Dad for me," Hannah Longbottom said, giving her daughter a peck on the forehead. Melissa rolled her eyes at her Mum. "Okay, Mum," she replied, giving her a small smile, before picking up her suitcase and her kitten, Pika, by the stomach, and boarding the train.

She was filled with a strange sense of nostalgia, like she was every year she boarded the train, at the strange kids that surrounded her, and the owls that often whizzed past her head. She took a seat in an empty carriage and waited for her siblings to board the train after her. Melissa let Pika down before putting her Nimbus 3000 in the overhanging storage compartment before opening her suitcase and taking out her purse, for refreshments, wand and an old magazine labelled The Quibbler, which usually contained rubbish, but sometimes she found an interesting article or two in it. After flipping through it quickly, she placed it back in her suitcase and took out a book to read.

Though she looked very antisocial, crouched over her book, she actually did love having conversations. Most people naturally assumed that Melissa preferred to be alone, when really she was just terrible at starting conversations, as well as feeling like an unwanted burden whenever she started them. The only people who really knew that she actually enjoyed company was her family, which was why she was hoping that one of them would sit in the compartment with her. They usually did, as well as several of their friends, but they did sometimes ditch her, and Melissa couldn't blame them.

Whether they chose to or not, Melissa would be fine. She could just read her book. Her new school year resolution this year had been to socialize and interact more, which was suggested by her mother (her new school year resolution last year was to get better potions grades, and she failed miserably) so she was sort of hoping someone would sit with her. At the same time, if no one did, at least she could finish her book and she couldn't be blamed for not socializing, right?

The last witches and wizards boarded the train as it blew the whistle, signifying that the Hogwarts Express was about to leave. Melissa put down her book to wave goodbye to her mother, who frantically waved back at her children. The train began to set off to Hogwarts as everyone began to file into compartments, and Melissa went back to ready her book.

On the complete other side of the platform was a young girl with thick black waves trying to see over the piles of books, robes, crates, boxes, and everything else she was currently holding in her arms. She'd always been much slower than the rest of her family, so there was no one left to help her out. By the time she'd even managed to cross over her siblings were boarding the train.

"Eden, sweetie, do try to hurry," her mother chastised gently as she dropped a kiss on her head and started back towards the entrance. "I've got to get back to the pub. Have a good year!"

"Yes mum," Eden Longbottom--who was hoping and praying with everything in her that she could just make it inside the train without killing herself first--replied softly. However, such hopes for her were unreachable, because at her feet a normally very lazy orange cat was swerving in an out between her legs, more excited than her owner by a long shot. In fact, in the next second, the cat's tail got stuck under Eden's foot, and she went toppling to the ground.

Both cat and girl shrieked out of surprise, one darting away to keep from being hit not only by the girl but everything she had been holding as well, and the other just dropped her forehead on the ground. Please...just let me disappear...

Fits of laughter shot up around her and she was torn between wishing at least one of her parents were there to help her up, and being extraordinary glad they weren't there to see her epic display of grace.

Scorpius was being kissed by his mother again "Mum, please." He wrinkled his nose at his mother who was dabbing away tears "It's not like I'm leaving forever."
"I know baby, I know." Scorpius rolled his eyes and accepted one more kiss from his mother, after she backed away his father Draco stepped up and the both looked at each other for a few awkward moments and then Scorpius sighed and went to give his father a hug.
"Bye Dad." He whispered against his fathers cloak.
"Good luck this term. Send an Owl when you get there." Draco murmured back. They parted a few minutes later and Scorpius went to gather his things and began to drag his things to the train. It was nearing departure time and so he wanted to find a good seat at least. He was walking there when suddenly a girl cried out right next to him and he turned just in time to see a cat darting away yowling and a girl topple over.

People laughed and he couldn't help the snort that came out of his nose. Scorpius went to the girl and after setting down his trunk he offered his hand to her. "Come on." He said. "Trains about to leave, get up." He wished he sounded more sympathetic. He offered the girl a bit of a smile and hoped that she wouldn't think him rude or anything.

Willa Knox, through no fault of her own, was late. Her father had suggested that he drive a muggle car and Willa and her mother had foolishly agreed. They had both assumed that Mr Knox had learnt to drive during the years living with his muggle parents, what could go wrong? A lot, apparently. Two hours later, a broken rear door and one confused police officer later The Knoxs had finally reached the train station.
They piled Willa's bags onto a cart, including the howling cat who did not like this many people, and ran for platform 9 and 3/4. They received a few curious glances from muggles on their way to work.
Pushing through the barrier Willa had a moments feeling of relief to see the train still there.

"Good bye honey!" Her mother said, giving her a kiss on the cheek and a swift hug. Her father did the same,
"Enjoy your year!" He added. Willa nodded,
"Be careful when you drive back Dad." The girl added, "Mum, don't let him kill anyone." The parents waved goodbye, each no doubt reminiscing about their own time boarding the Hogwarts Express.
Farewells over Willa boarded the train and began to search for a cabin. She passed many filled with excited first years, she remembered her first train ride and the anxious anticipation of finally arriving at Hogwarts. She had been scared stiff-less that the sorting hat wouldn't sort her into any house, that some kind of horrible mistake had happened when she received her Hogwarts letter. Luckily that hadn't happened and she had been placed in Gryffindor.
Finding an empty cabin proved too hard and Willa eventually had to settle with one already occupied.
"You're Melissa, right?" Willa asked, stepping into the train carriage. The girl, Melissa, was a sixth year like Willa but from Hufflepuff. "Do you mind if I sit here? Everywhere else is full." Without waiting for an answer Willa pushed her bags away and happily sat down opposite Melissa.

Kye wondered down the train, Head Boy badge proudly displayed on his chest. He was already in his robes too, the Ravenclaw blue and bronze insignia on his chest clearly stating his house. He was checking the cabins to make sure everything was in order, as would the other Hogwarts' prefects. He was tall and seemed to tower over most of the younger students.
'Was I ever that short?' He thought to himself as an anxious first year rushed by. 'Probably shorter' He added to himself with a smile. They seemed to get shorter every year, or perhaps it was just him gaining height. He had had another growth spurt over the holidays too.

He glanced out to the station where late students were finishing arriving and final farewells were being said.
Of course he had been here early, one of the first students to arrive. His parents had given him a farewell from home and left him to apparate to the station. Apparition was still new and exciting to him, he had spent most of the holidays appearing and disappearing around his family home - much to the annoyance of his older brothers. They had also seemed annoyed when Kye had been made Head Boy, something neither of the two had done.

He glanced into one of the cabins and found it occupied by two girls, both the year below him. A quick grin flitted across his face as he recognised Willa, his neighbour and old friend, sitting with a Hufflepuff girl. He changed his expression to one of mock seriousness and then grandly opened the cabin door, making sure to sweep his robes behind him as he entered.
"Students." He greeted, nodding in turn to both girls, "I trust everything is in order."

Willa, for her part, was able to stifle a snort of laughter and replied with a half bow from her seat,
"My Lord-King-Head Boy, what have we done to be given the great honour of your presence?" She couldn't stop the grin that spread across her face.

Kye turned to the other girl, was she one of the Hufflepuff twins? Melissa possibly? He couldn't quite remember.
"Ignore her, she has no idea what she is saying." he told her, placing a condescending hand on Willa's head and ruffling her hair. Willa just rolled her eyes and pushed his hand away. For all his serious work ethics and supposed responsibilities as Head Boy, Kye could still be an immature pain at times.

"Mum! Ah~cut it out!" James Sirius Potter complained as he pushed against the shorter woman holding her son captive. Now, normally, James was rather close to his redheaded mum, often enough that he would kiss her on the cheek before boarding the Hogwarts Express himself.

However, he'd caused a tiny bit of trouble before leaving the house (something to do with his sister not being able to find her cat...) and, as punishment, Ginny Potter was holding her son in a death grip around the neck as she covered his face with kisses. James Sirius, unfortunately, wasn't going anywhere.

"Come'on dad, help me out!" he complained, trying desperately to wiggle his way free. "Mum, the train's going to leave soon!"

Harry Potter was of no help to his eldest son, instead standing there with a smile on his face, one arm tossed over the middle child's shoulders as though both tried, pointlessly, to hide their smiles.

Ironically enough, it was said little sister who saved him from his capture. "Mum, as I much as I love this, James is right...the train will be leaving soon and I don't want to miss it..."

Ginny laughed at Lily's interruption of her embarrassing her oldest child. "Oh, alright," she says with a sigh and finally let him go. Probably because it was Lily's first year, and more important stuff needed to be done.

James Sirius stumbled out of her grasp and immediately began straightening his clothes and rubbing kisses off his cheeks. He cracked a smile as Lily promised she'd make the boys write and not get into too much trouble. He was actually sure she'd remind the boys to write, but as for getting into trouble...

"Do try, sweetheart," Ginny mumbled, trying to ignore the smirk on James' face as she hugs her only daughter goodbye. After that she waved as Lily climbed onto the train.

James Sirius glared at his mother--all in good fun--before hugging his father. Then he gave his younger brother a playful little shove towards the train.

"Ah, Sirius, cut it out," Albus complained as he stumbled away.

Eden looked up just barely when she heard a male voice, her nose resting on the cold ground and her big brown eyes staring up at him. He was younger than her, she could tell, but he struck some sort of familiarity. She probably just knew him from around school.

It was, however, rare for people to stop and help her. They were used to her issues by now, and generally they didn't even bother to laugh anymore. But, she figured the lovely display of flying artifacts and the yelping cat might have had something to do with the unwanted extra attention.

"Come on." He said. "Trains about to leave, get up."

She snapped out of her own thoughts when she realized he'd offered his hand to her. She took it gratefully and pulled herself to her feet. He didn't sound entirely sympathetic, but to be honest she couldn't blame him. She was the idiot that'd crashed, and his smile and offered help definitely made up for it.

"Thank you," she whispered, a bright blush appearing on her face. "People don't...do that very much..."

Then she realized the mess she'd caused when she'd fallen. Her trunk was split open, she'd been waiting for that to happen after one too many falls. "No, no, no," she begged under her breath as she dropped to her knees and tried her best to gather up her fallen things.

"Oh my Merlin I'm going to miss the train and have to go back home, and I don't even know why I try anymore I should just drop out and admit that I'm not good at anything and..." she trailed off, still whispering to herself between clinched teeth.

Scorpius
She took his hand and Scorpius helped her up, once she was up he too saw the mess of items all over the place and he sighed a little and bent to help pick them up. Her trunk was split open and he looked over at her and said "I don't mind helping. Wouldnt want you to miss school." She was blushing and he couldn't help but snort. "Come on, its not that bad. I'm sure your parents will send you a new trunk. For now just stuff everything in and I'll help you carry it." He told her as she went off talking to herself as if she were a failure.

Scorpius gazed at her for a moment and then said "Chin up." That's what his mother used to tell him all the time when he was down and the thought of her made him smile. He managed to help her stuff the last of her items back into her case and then they shut what was left of lid. Scorpius got up and he managed to lift his own trunk with one arm and drag it a bit. He then bent to retrieve her end and looked at her "come on then. Let's go find a place."

Scorpius wanted to make sure the girl would be alright and so he figured if they could find a carriage together they could sort out her things. Together they managed to get onto the train just as the last of the students filled the red cars. Scorpius managed to find them a place where a girl sat by herself gazing out of the window. He entered and asked if it was alright if they join her and the girl smiled and nodded.

Relieved Scorpius led the girl he had found outside into the cart and they laid her broken trunk on the seat and he went to put away his own. The girl stood and she lifted a hand to the two newcomers that had come into her carriage.

***
Alanna

Two people entered her room and she smiled her best smile that them. Alana was pleased that she would not be alone for the trip and she pushed her messy hair back and went to look at the obviously damaged trunk. "Hi." She smiled at the girl and the boy, "I don't think we've met before. I'm Alanna." The boy took her hand and introduced himself as Scorpius, he looked over at the other girl and it was apparent that he didn't know her name.

"Nice to meet you both." Alanna smiled and she looked at the broken trunk and sighed "That's a shame that is." She murmured. "I would fix it but no magic outside of school you see." Alanna sat down back in her seat hoping that she didn't appear to overbearing and then said "I suppose the best thing to do with that is to wait until school and then fix it yourself." She advised. Alanna was always very free with her words, this she knew but she thought the advice she had given was quite sound.

Alanna reached into her bag and she pulled out a few packets of chocolate frogs and offered them to the distressed girl, "These will make you feel better." She promised, Alanna never liked to see other people sad and she made it a personal mission to try and make them smile. She supposed some people might find that annoying but she didn't really care too much.

The door opened, and a blonde Gryffindor girl who was in the same year as Melissa walked in. "You're Melissa, right?" she asked. Melissa put her book down on her lap and nodded. What was the girl's name again? Will...Willow...Willa. "Do you mind if I sit here? Everywhere else is full." Melissa opened her mouth to respond, but Willa was already sitting down across from her.

The door opened yet again, this time Kye, a Ravenclaw and Head Boy. He gave Willa a small smile and Melissa felt butterfliesflit across her stomach, nerves.
"Students." He said, nodding at the two girls. "I trust everything is in order." Willa giggled, before giving him a half bow.

"My Lord-King-Head Boy, what have we done to be given the great honour of your presence?" she replied. Kye turned to look at Melissa and she felt her cheeks turn pink. "Ignore her, she has no idea what she is saying." Kye ruffled Willa's hair, and Willa quickly pushed away, rolling her eyes. Melissa giggled lightly, unsure if she should feel uncomfortable, but she didn't, for once.

"It's Willa and Kye, right?" she asked them. "How do you two know each other?" As soon as she said it, she turned a darker shade of pink, wondering if she was being too personal or anything.

Eden nearly jumped out of her skin when she spoke to him again. She really figured he would have taken off already, better and better things to do than help an idiot girl with all her school stuff. She was staring at him for quite a long moment before he snorted and spoke again.

Would her parents send her a new trunk? Probably, but she was just such a trouble maker that she felt bad. She nodded again, snapped out of her thoughts, and started stuffing everything in just like he said.

"Chin up."

She froze for a moment, her hand grasping a few bottles of ink that had somehow not burst open. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and sat her jaw then lifted her chin. You're a Longbottom, Edie, pull yourself together.

Together they dropped the last of the items into the trunk and then, with his help, she managed to lift it and help him carry it. They made it on the train just in time, and with an odd way down the train until they found a compartment. Or rather, he did. A girl was there, gazing out the window, but no one else, and when he asked if they could join she smiled and nodded.

She sighed as they laid her broken trunk on the seat, and she pushed it into the corner as much as she could while he put his away.

She wondered where Melissa was, but she honestly couldn't be bothered to go find her. It'd already been a long day and really, she just waned to sit down.

The girl that had been there got up to look at the damage, but instead of commenting on it she just introduced herself with a smile. Eden's temporary savior introduced himself first, and Eden suddenly realized why he looked familiar. Scorpius. As in Malfoy. She realized she'd been staring too long when he looked at her, and she immediately snapped out of it. "Eden," she supplied.

She sighed and looked at her trunk as it was mention. "Shame indeed," she muttered. "I'd fix it but...I'd probably just make it worse..." She was staring at the trunk sadly when Alanna suddenly offered her chocolate. Her first reaction was to deny them--she didn't want to be a bother.

"Thanks," she mentioned with a shy smile as she took one and sat on the seat next to her mess of a trunk. "And you Scorpius...thanks again...really, I'm very grateful."

Kye, after having his hand pushed away, chuckled and took a seat next to the cabin door. From here he could see out into the corridor and would be able to see any prefects coming - or any trouble that needed dealing with. Of course he had already given the prefects their instructions for the train trip, they would be helping late students on board and checking that everyone was where they were supposed to be. He was supposed to be doing that too but felt that he could spare a few minutes.

"It's Willa and Kye, right?" Melissa asked, "How do you two know each other?"

Kye glanced across at Willa with a grin and Willa, recognizing the danger replied quickly before him.

"We're neighbours." She told Melissa. Willa noted the flushed cheeks of the other girl and wondered why the girl was suddenly embarrassed. A lot of people assumed that, because Willa and Kye were so close, they must be more than friends. But their relationship was completely platonic.
"Willa used to come over and run naked around our backyard." Kye added, unable to help himself. Willa turned a deep shade of red,
"I was three years old!" She protested, holding her cheeks in her hands. She turned her attention to Melissa and, leaning forward conspiratorially, told her quietly, "Don't listen to him, the power has gone to his head."
Kye heard but chose to ignore the comment. He glanced out into the corridor again and was pleased to see that the station seemed to be clear of students.

Willa leaned back in her seat and glanced from Melissa to the book she had been reading. Was that the Quibbler?
"You're a fan of the Quibbler?" Willa asked, interested. She really didn't know much about Melissa, apart from the fact that she was in Hufflepuff. She knew they would have had classes together in the past at some point.

Scorpius sat himself down on the window seat and he took a chocolate that Alanna offered and he looked over at Eden and gave her a little nod. "Don't worry about it. I'll help you with your trunk again when we get to school." He promised her. He opened the package and smiled at the frog tried to hop out but he caught him mid jump in a practiced move and took a bite out of its side. Scorpius munched happily and went to look at his card, he smiled when he got Ron Weasley and tucked the card of the confused looking ginger into his pocket.

He looked over at Eden and said "Hufflepuff right?" He asked her as he settled back into his seat and stretched his legs. Scorpius felt comfortable with the two girls in the room with him, he knew they were both older than him but he didn't mind. "I think I've seen you around near the divination tower." He said to her. "I think my Muggle studies class is around there this year." He said thoughtfully.

Scorpius was excited to start his new classes, care of magical creatures and muggle studies. He felt like he had more responsibility now, a mature feeling had filled him and Scorpius enjoyed it.

Alanna
***

Alanna gazed at the two people in the room and she smiled, she was happy they had accepted the chocolate frogs and felt perhaps she had done a little good. She sat where she was and leaned back, her legs were stiff from sitting so long. She had arrived very early for the train and had been seated and ready to go an hour before the train had actually departed.

Alanna had been excited, school was always something she looked forward to and she was excited to get back into the groove and back to classes. She pushed her glasses up on her nose a bit and brushed some invisible speck off her uniform. "Are you two excited for school?" she asked wondering if there was anyone who enjoyed school as much as she did.
Scorpius nodded and said "I'm looking forward to it. It's always nice when school starts again." He said finishing off his Chocolate frog.
"What about you Eden?" Alanna said gazing at the brown haired girl "are you excited?"

"We're neighbours," Willa said quickly. Melissa nodded her head. "Willa used to come over and run naked around our backyard." Kye added, and Melissa laughed. Willa blushed and immediately protested an excuse. "I was three years old!" She turned her head to Melissa as she continued. "Don't listen to him, the power has gone to his head."

Kye ignored Willa's comment as he glanced out into the corridor. Melissa glanced up at him but was interrupted by Willa. "You're a fan of the Quibbler?" she asked, obviously spotting the book sitting next to Melissa's knee. Melissa crossed her legs as she continued. "I wouldn't say fan," she stated quickly. "There are sometimes a few good articles, though most of it is just a pile of fiction." She hoped the girl wouldn't be annoyed at the fact that Melissa didn't believe most of the Quibbler articles.

The train started to move and Melissa realized that she was sitting alone with two strangers - that was, if Kye decided to join them, since he was still standing at the door - but didn't actually mind. Usually, she would feel uncomfortable and awkward around strangers unless a family member or friend was there, and would excuse herself to go to the bathroom or make up another pathetic excuse to leave. She felt strangely comfortable around them, and wondered if it was because of them as people, or because she was actually making an effort in the conversation for once.

Ava kissed her mother and father in turn, on the cheek as they ushered her on-board the train that would, inevitably take her to the place she felt most - Alive.
Magic was always awe-inspiring to Ava, no matter how many times she saw a spell being performed or a Quidditch match being played, she truly appreciated the wonder that was, magic.
It must sound gushy and mushy that she feel so strongly about these things but when it comes down to it, not one single person can sum up what magic is in a single word - It's amazing sure, but it's also much more than that, a power beyond humans a power that Wizards and Witches can never fully master as new and exciting spells are made everyday; no matter how small they are, they show that the end to the power of magic is limitless.

Shaking her head from these thoughts, Ava realised that she must get on the train as soon as possible, she could not risk missing one of the best things that has happened to her.
Hugging all her brother's in turn Ava grins as she turns back to the grand vehicle and hops on, pulling her little cat's cage on after her and looking for a cabin in which she could sit.

"I wouldn't say fan," Melissa assured Willa "There are sometimes a few good articles, though most of it is just a pile of fiction."
Willa nodded, "I know what you mean," She said brightly, "Most of it's garbage. But I like the potion recipes they sometimes give out. Most of the time they don't do what they're meant to do and it's always fun finding out what they actually do."

Willa laughed. She had once read a recipe in the Quibbler that said it could turn your enemies into frogs. Willa had been pretty sure that the actual potion, which they had learnt in class the previous week, was vastly different from the one offered in the magazine. She had given it a go out of curiosity. As she had dropped the last ingredient the cauldron had given a loud croak before large, green frogs had began to leap out of the bubbling liquid. It had been hours before the frogs had began to disappear in poofs of green smoke and during that time they had managed to bounce their way around the potions class and out into the dungeons. The potions professor had not been happy with Willa, who had been uncontrollably laughing at the whole mess.

Kye for his part just shook his head. He never read the Quibbler, preferring to read things that gave actual facts instead of fantasy. The train had started by then and he knew that, until they came closer to Hogwarts, he would be able to relax for a time. He leaned back in his seat and turned his attention from the corridor back to the two girls. For now, not having anything good to add about the Quibbler, he didn't join the conversation. He did however crack a grin as Willa laughed, he knew her fondness for experimenting with the Quibbler's potions and had been one of the prefects tasked with cleaning up the frogs mess.
