Description

Nurse Dolly Parker
Image

Name: Dolly Parker - Dolly is fine.
Occupation: A general nurse for Wing B.
Age: 24

Personality: Dolly is a spirited, optimistic, naive lady. She gets on well with all the patients of Wing B, and despite the limited life expectancy for most of them, she believes that miracles can and will happen and that every patient will survive. Most are likely to disagree with her, but she won't let them be miserable while she is around. This nurse brings fun to the wing, despite her sometimes clumsy and forgetful nature. She thinks the general doctor is kind of hot, but fancies the pants off the urgent care nurse.

Image
Likes:
+ The urgent care nurse.
+ Cheering people up.
+ Sitting outside on a hot summers day reading a good romance book.

Dislikes:
- Men who are unfaithful to their wives - she feels really sorry for the main characters in her romance novels.
- Seeing people who are upset, especially if it is at the hospital.
- Rats, because they spread disease and are just generally darn scary.

Image
Background:

Dolly has had a fairly normal, regular life. She grew up in a nice house with her mom, dad, younger brother and her grandma. When she was a child, she delighted in collecting Sylvanian Families, and to this day still has them all hidden away in the attic at her parent's house. When she was 9, she was given a pet Labrador called Mandy, who now lives at her flat and is a good subject to talk about with new or touchy patients.

As a teenager, Dolly was always looking out for her brother and making sure he was okay. She would fend off the school bullies, help him do his homework, and baby sit him while her parents were out. It was at this stage that she started to consider taking up a job that involved working with and looking after other people, and when she was accepted into Triple Science during Year 9 she finally decided that she would like to be a nurse.

Dolly worked and studied hard throughout high school, and eventually went on to become a medical student at university. In the recent years she earned her degree and started working at the hospital. She thoroughly enjoys her work and will never slack, but she won't say no to a night of partying and fun either, even if she is a little groggy in the morning. She dreams that one day she will fall in love with a suitable man, get a house with him, and have a big family. After reading all those romance novels, she defiantly believes in a happy ever after, for both her and her patients.

Now, some of her favorite patients, and some she has never met before, are moving back into Wing B, and she is oblivious to the fun that will be in store.

So begins...

It was very early morning, ridiculously early, and Dolly wasn’t sure why she had been woken up so early until she heard the scratching on the on call room door. Groaning, she sat up and swung her legs out of bed as the scratching turned into pounding.

“I’m coming, I’m coming!” She grumbled, yanking the door open.

The sight that greeted her was one for sore eyes. Her grouchiness vanishing instantly, Dolly crouched down next to Nick and Daisy as the later lay on the floor, covered in blood and coughing.

“What on Earth have you been doing Daisy?” She joked, noticing Nick looked very uncomfortable in the current situation. Gently, she helped sit Daisy up in a better position, and patted her back as she waited for the coughing to calm down a little.

Once Daisy was breathing a little easier, Dolly helped her get up. “I’m going to help you back to your room, then I will call your attending physician, okay?”

They began the slow journey back to Daisy’s room, then Dolly quickly called the attending physician. She hoped he would come soon, because Daisy really wasn’t looking too good.

It wasn’t unusual for Charlie to struggle to get to sleep. Bad dreams and nightmares laced her mind when she finally drifted into a slumber, and sometimes it was very difficult for anything to wake her out of them.

This was the case right now. Although there were shouts from out in the hallway, Charlie wasn’t waking up. Part of her brain wanted to come to consciousness, to find out what was going on and see if she could help, but the rest of it was adamant that she should stay locked in her nightmare. She was coming out of a deep REM sleep, her body still but sweaty, small whimpers emerging from her mouth.

The shouts came again as the REM sleep finally released her, and her body was free to move around. She shifted a little in the sweat soaked sheets, still whimpering, her bad dream not quite finished.

It was when, and only when she was about to die in her dream that she woke up. Gasping, Charlie bolted upright, grabbing the wet sheets and letting out a small sob as her brain fought to catch up with the rest of her. After a few seconds of blind panic, Charlie realised it was just a dream, and settled back down, but the bed was extremely uncomfortable now that it was soaked through. The bad dreams were getting worse and more frequent as the weeks passed by, and Charlie was constantly soaking the bed with her unusual amount of sweat that was common in leukemia patients. This, coupled with the fact that the nightmares haunted her mind for a while, made it hard for her to ever go back to sleep once she had woken up.

Deciding that there was no way she could get back to sleep now, Charlie gingerly got up and shuffled towards her door, hoping to find someone that could change her sheets, or at least give her something else to lie on top of. Sticking her head out into the corridor, she saw the back of Dolly retreating into Daisy's room, and wondered what was going on. Slowly, she began to make her way down to Daisy's room, hoping that Dolly would do something about her sweat soaked bed and that there was nothing the matter with her best friend.

Double shifts today. These were not the most exciting three words, but neither were they the rarest. He had seen triple shifts from his four years at Marion Hospital, more specifically during the times he worked to help earn his sister's matriculation fees. He was particularly insistent on helping, and his [immediate] family grew increasingly worried that he may not be living the life he should be at his age, or as they described it, 'peak of his prime' and 'the summit of his adult years'.

He thought he was doing fairly fine at that point. He was a registered nurse at 21, he had gotten a job at a relatively new hospital, he had an apartment of his own, and he could still afford to eat and pay the bills. He had argued with her about wanting to contribute to something better for her and something that could make her happy, not daring to mention what she had done to herself before he got to nursing school and the effect it had on their mother. Of course, he had to relent some time. It took some convincing on his sister's and his parents' part for him to slow down, and was only further relaxed when she had decided to become a freelance graphic designer on the side. Despite everything, she seemed to love and genuinely enjoy what she was doing, but he understood how tiring it could all get at the end of the day. There was only so much mental energy one person could sustain within a given period of time. Consequently, Cato took it upon himself to call or video call every now and then to check up on her. Now was one of those times.

However, he could not stay on long, needing to walk the few blocks to the hospital, and so disconnected from the call and checked if everything was in order before he locked his apartment.

It was Nance and Marion, two older RNs, who had informed him that Daisy McGrane made yet another daring escape from her room a few minutes before, despite Dr. Reeves's particular orders not to engage in any form of physical task that exhausted her lung capability. Word spread fast amongst the nurses of Ward B, and the latter, ever the type to chat with you until your jaws dropped off, engaged in conversation with him while they were in the locker rooms.

"Dolly managed to get her back to her room," Marion went on as she put on her scrubs, "but she called Dr. Reeves."
Cato's brows furrowed at that, and sighed heavily. "She shouldn't have," he said as he pulled the scrub top on. "The man hates being disturbed at this time. I'll go call him. How did they find her?"
"Coughing, and coughing hard. Minimal amounts of blood in her sputum, but nothing to suggest that her lungs require drainage."

He shut his locker and dialed Dr. Reeves's number to explain the situation and that he would carry out the patient order he assigned him. He received an earful, but the doctor eventually calmed down. "We'll have to run a laboratory test on her sputum, check how far the infection's gone, then from there adjust her course of antibiotics if necessary," he told him over the phone. He sounded so tired.
"Yes, sir."

He came to Daisy's room with Ventolin nebules and the urge to tell her off for not cooperating with doctor's orders again, only to find Charlotte at the door and Dolly with Daisy.

"I'll take over from here. Charlotte's at the door. Could you attend to her?" He was aware he said it all too hastily, but he needed to clear the room to allow Daisy to relax. He set up the nebulizer and eased the mask onto her nose and mouth, instructing her to breathe as deeply as she could.

Nick's head snapped up as the door to the call room opened, instantly relieved as he saw Dolly. Thank god she showed up because Nick was on the verge of a panic attack. "Sh-she was just out here when I came out, I don't know what she was thinking." He was slightly breathless as he spoke, on one hand still terribly concerned for his friend's well-being and on the other hand horribly embarrassed to be so useless in the situation, especially in front of his crush. Thankfully Dolly didn't pay him any mind, instead helping Daisy to her room.

He quickly stood, though didn't want to crowd Daisy so he opted to trail behind them, though not very close. Nick watched as Charlie and Cato both went to check up on Daisy, from the angle he was at he could just barely see a Daisy on her bed. Having a feeling that he might not be able to handle looking at a blood-covered Daisy again, Nick didn't join his friends in Daisy's room.

His attention was pulled from the entrance to Daisy's room to Scarlett as she walked towards him. He gave a weary smile at her concern, "I'm fine Scar, and I'm not sure about Daisy, last I saw her she had blood all over..." He crossed his arms over his chest, swallowing thickly as he looked off towards the room, "She'll be fine, too stubborn to die just yet." Nick gave a forced laugh, looking back to Scarlett, "We should check out the situation close up." He put on a brave face, slowly making his way to the room.

Nick scanned the room as he went to stand behind Charlie, eyes skipping over Daisy just to spare himself, "Hey," he called for the attention of the two nurses in the room, "Is Daisy going to be okay?" He questioned, frowning a little as his eyes blurred out for a moment. Nick cursed under his breath as he looked down, rubbing his eyes a little and shaking his head as if to shake it off. When he looked up again his blurry vision slowly cleared. "Sorry, I just blurred out for a second." He muttered, hoping that neither nurse read too much into it.

Most everything was a blur after that. Her eyes were too foggy to really see her surroundings; her lungs ached as she struggled to regain herself, and her head pounded. Nick was the first person to find her, and even though he couldn’t do anything for her it was comforting to have him there. It wasn’t long until Dolly came out of the on call room though.

Daisy knew that even though Dolly was a nurse, she didn’t know the extensiveness of her disease. She just knew how to care for the day-to-day needs, and how to keep good bedside manner. It was nothing against Dolly, but Daisy was annoyed that she of all people was the one to find her. But that was fine, at least she was found. Despite that fact that she felt like her organs were turning inside out Daisy managed to get to her room with the help of miss Dolly. When she was laid down to catch her breath she was still coughing, though the tears that came with such intense coughing hard subsided.

It wasn’t until Cato entered her room that she was fully aware of the ruckus she had made this morning. In the doorway stood Charlie, and behind her were a collection of nurses and a couple of other patients, though she couldn’t really make them out.

In the midst of her hacking, Daisy managed to say, “Oh, here’s the man of the hour!” She smiled as he set up the nebulizer and inserted it into her nose and mouth. She grumbled at him as he stoically said the same instructions that he said every time.

She took in a deep breath and a felt instant relief. She closed her eyes for a moment and tilted her head back. There was nothing like the feeling of breathing. People really took advantage of just breathing and they didn’t understand how ultimately relaxing and wonderful is was. When she opened her eyes again she looked over at the door and waved her hand. That was enough of that; she wasn’t a fan of people watching her with those big scared-she’s-about-to-die eyes.

Daisy wasn’t going to die. She was doing the opposite of dying today. In fact, for those 30 seconds that she was strutting down the hallway she felt more alive than she had in the past couple of months.

Her eyes trailed over to Cato. She could tell that he was upset. And she knew that Dr. Reeves would be even more upset. Dr. Reeves was more like a distant father figure in her life. He had been her doctor for more than 10 years now, and it was never a pretty site when he had to be woken up to assist little ol’ escaping Daisy. Oh well, she would deal with that then.

Taking in another deep breath she looked over at Cato and said, “I’m sorry. “

Charlie stood in Daisy’s doorway, then moved to the side to let the various people in that wanted to or needed to come in. Although Daisy looked like she was in a life threatening situation, Charlie knew that it wasn’t the case, Daisy was too stubborn to die easy. She loitered in the doorway a little longer, unsure if she should go in the room or not. On one hand, she was worried about Daisy, on the other, she knew that Daisy didn’t want an audience. Plus, if she went in, she would no doubt get in the way of the doctors.

It was then that she heard her name being mentioned, and stepped a bit further into the room. Cato was asking Dolly if she could attend to her, and Nick and Scarlett were coming in. They stood behind her, and Charlie turned to face them a little as Nick began speaking, but didn’t really get to hear what he was asking before Dolly reached her side.

Following Cato’s orders, Dolly turned away from Daisy, satisfied that Cato had everything under control, and headed over to Charlie.

“Hey Charlie,” she said softly, and opened her mouth to ask her if she would like her sheets changing again, as usual in the middle of the night, but was distracted by Nick instead. “I’m sure Daisy will be fine,” she replied, frowning a little. “Take it easy,” she added once his eyes had had their blurry moment.

“Right Charlie,” she said, looking back over at the patient she was supposed to be helping right now. “I suppose you want your sheets changing again. You can wait here and see that Daisy’s all right, or you can come with me, whatever you choose.” Then Dolly walked out and down the corridor to Charlie’s room and began sorting out the sweat soaked sheets.

Nick nodded a little at Dolly's suggestion to 'take it easy', glancing over to Cato as he ordered everyone out of the room. "Whelp, I guess that means the party's over." He mumbled, rubbing his eyes a little as he walked out of the room, stretching up a little as he walked away, deciding to bypass his room to avoid the mess of parts he'd left scattered in his room. Nick didn't really feel like finishing up the laptop at the moment.

No, he found something else that had caught his interest more than his previous project could. Dolly was only changing Charlie's sheets but for some reason she looked amazing doing it. Nick watched her from the hallway, looking into the room at an angle. He really didn't know how she seemed to draw him in all the time, not that it was her fault, no, Nick knew he was entirely to blame for his crush. It wasn't like Dolly had ever come onto him or made him believe that he even had the slightest chance, but she did manage to supply an exceptional amount of optimism and admittedly naive hope. She seemed to genuinely believed that most the patients in the wing would get better, and Nick couldn't help but find it heartwarming.

He didn't expect her to actually love him back, Nick knew very well that no one loved a dead man, but he was perfectly content with being friends with her. It wasn't that much longer before Nick realized he'd been staring at Dolly and he quickly averted his gaze. Keeping his eyes on the floor he walked over to Charlie's room, stopping at the door.

Trying his best to act casual, he leaned against the door frame, looking over to Dolly with a slight smile, "That was quite a scare huh?" he shook his head a little, "That Daisy will never learn will she?" Nick joked, chuckling lightly.

Following Nick down the hallway to where Daisy was, Scarlett felt a wave of sadness wash over her. It was times like these that made her regret the amount of time she still has left to live. Sure, it still wasn't easy living with Haemophilia, but at least she had a normal human lifespan.
It all happened rather quickly. Daisy was struggling to breathe, Dolly was trying to help and Cato was there to rescue Daisy before she would've ventured off into unconsciousness. Scarlett liked that about Cato; the fact that he was able to have a friendship with most of his patients, and willingly help them survive.
Unlike her, he was able to make a change.

When Daisy needed time alone, Charlie went with Dolly to her room. Scarlett watched as Nick followed the two of them, knowing he was planning on talking to Dolly.
Scar knew Nick long enough now to have noticed the way he is when around Dolly. She also knew that if she went with Nick to Charlies room, she would tease him even more.
"Maybe time alone right now would be nice." She thought.

It was still early in the morning when Scarlett went up onto the rooftop. A lot of the patients weren't able to make it up to the rooftop and when it was as early as it was, there wouldn't be a soul who knew of Scarletts disappearance. She smiled a faint smile and looked at her surroundings. Because the other patients were unable to climb the stairs to the rooftop, or just didn't bother, Scarlett was usually up there alone. The doctors possibly knew about it, but were never around when she was up there.
It was her stage up on the rooftop; the only place where she could let it all out.

Scarlett had danced up on the rooftop till her bones began to ache, and her joints began to stiffen. She wanted to dance before having to get blood infusions later on in the day, which meant she needed to rest in her bed for a while. Sitting down, she began to stretch out her legs. Looking up at the sky, she sighed happily. It was a nice day. She sighed once more before realizing that at this point, Scarlett had never felt so alone.

Charlie followed Dolly down the corridor to her room, seeing that Daisy needed time alone. She walked slowly, tired and a little breathless, but her room was not that far away. Once she arrived, Dolly had already started changing the sheets, so she opted to sit on a chair beside her bed as she waited for her to finish. She hated having to bother anyone at this time of night, but she more so hated having to sleep on wet sheets – or not being able to sleep at all. At one time, she might have been embarrassed about her excessive sweating during the night, but she wasn’t anymore. It was just a part of who she was, a part of her illness.

Placing a small smile on her face as Dolly glanced over at her, Charlie stretched and sighed as she grew impatient for her bed. She was so tired.

In fact, Charlie was so focused on how tired she was and how much she wanted to sleep that she didn’t realise Nick was approaching her room until he stood in the doorway. Then, finally sensing his presence, she looked up, but he kept his eyes on the floor, before looking up at Dolly.

Dolly was lost in her thoughts as she carried out her usual job, and didn’t notice that she had a visitor until he started to speak.

Smiling, she turned around to look at him as she finished tucking the new bed sheets in.

“A scare indeed,” she agreed, “but nothing too unusual. Daisy will never learn.” Humming lightly, she started on the thin duvet, which was also a little wet with sweat. She quickly slipped the soiled cover off and dropped it on the floor next to the old bed sheet, before starting the tricky job of shaking the duvet into a clean cover. Once that was completed, she placed the duvet neatly on the bed, ready for Charlie to use.

“Did you want anything, Nick?” She asked pleasantly, folding up the soiled bedding and tucking it under her arm. She didn’t like getting out of bed at silly ‘o clock in the morning, but now that she was up and about she was her usual happy, helpful self.

He didn't need to be reminded of that fact.

He could see it in the weary look she wore, weakened by the coughing fit and the vigorous enough activity she put herself through. Perhaps, if he weren't quite so upset, he would've been impressed. Every time he came by to attend to her, day after day, year after year, he could see the growing exhaustion with the life she was leading now and the clear disparity between it and the life she so desperately wanted to chase, but as it was, she couldn't even make it past the call station to make her great escape. Her disorder was the spotlight from the watchtower; the nurses, the dogs; her doctor, her warden.

He didn't want to bark or bite.

As much as possible, he tried to figure out how to let the upset dissipate. He let out a deep sigh, the best and the easiest way how he could muster at the moment, and put on a wan smile for her. "You know I can't play devil's advocate. As one of the nurses delivering care to you, and to the best of my ability, I urge you to follow the course of treatment and all advice given to you by your attending physician. It's inadvisable for you in your state, urgent, fiery need for existential confirmation or not, to wander past the bathroom provided for you in this room, much less wander into the hall. Your lungs show signs of infection. You've been put on a course of antibiotics to counter it."

He paused, taking a good look at Daisy before he pat her gently on the shoulder.

"But as your friend, I can't stress how important your treatment here is enough. I want you to be well, happy, and all the things you want to be, but you can't be all of those if you're writhing around in pain. And I don't want to see you that way."

He gave her shoulder a little squeeze before he set off for the door. "I'll be off. I need to go over patient orders in the nurse's station."

Just before that, he thought he would pay a little trip to Nick's room to ask him something, but upon finding him by the door of Charlotte's room, he approached him there instead.

"Nick. D'you think—" He turned to look inside Charlotte's room, and waved Dolly a polite hello. "—sorry to interrupt the conversation. Nick, could I ask a favor?"

Nick struggled slightly to maintain a casual composure as Dolly smiled, having to resist the urge to just melt at her adorable doe-eyed face. He couldn't help it as his smile grew a little wider and he lost himself to thought for a moment or two, tuning in just in time to hear Dolly ask him if he wanted anything. 'Well, I'd very much like for you to reciprocate my feelings, that would be nice.' Nick desperately wanted to just voice his thoughts so they'd be out in the open, and maybe if it was anyone else besides Dolly he might. But she'd always been so bright and sunshiny around him, Nick felt the need to hide his bitter comments on anything.

It took him a second to think up some sort of response that wouldn't make him sound like a complete idiot in front of her, "I mean I don't need anything technically, besides you know someone to talk to, cause Daisy's out of commission at the moment and uh, oh Charlie's sleeping, huh, you think I would have noticed that." He was blabbering, 'Crap, very rough start, just wrap it up.' he thought to himself, "So, I overheard something about a gala? You gotta go to those kinds of events right?" He questioned. Nick had been itching to ask Dolly about the Gala for sometime now, he'd overheard/ eavesdropped on some nurses' conversation. They hadn't provided much information about it besides there was a formal dress code and that they needed dates. Nick figured that Dolly wouldn't ask him to be her date but a guy could dream.

Nick must have been a little too keen on listening for Dolly's response because he didn't even notice Cato until he spoke. Ah, Cato, the guy that Dolly actually liked, not that Nick would let that little detail effect their friendship. He gave his friend a wide grin, "Sure, what do you need? Got any tech questions?" Nick loved helping out when he could, especially when there was a possibility of getting to fix up a device.

Dolly sighed, nodded and chewed her lip as she fiddled with the sheets that were tucked under her arm. The Gala. It would be a great night, she was sure, but she needed both a dress and a date. The latter being hard to find.

She would love to go with Cato, of course she would. It would be her dream come true. But it was fairly obvious that she was the only one doing the lusting in their relationship. Still, he might ask her, if he found no one else to go with.

Before she got a chance to give a proper, verbal answer, the Devil himself appeared in the doorway. Argh, awkward. She had been thinking about him only a second ago. A wide smile occupied her face, despite her inner blushing, as she moved a bit closer to the door, preparing to leave while Nick and Cato spoke, and trying not to look at Cato. She looked back at Charlie one more time, who had gotten into bed without Dolly even noticing. She looked like she was asleep, so she hoped the men didn’t wake her up.

"Well... It's about Daisy." Cato paused and pinched the bridge of his nose. This was more complicated than he thought, being a carer and a friend to a patient in the hospital. There was no escaping the connection between him and them. He simultaneously wished he could afford to be as aloof as some of the doctors seemed to be around their patients. "Look, I'm aware it isn't exactly news: she feels as if she's wasting the rest of her life here, and I can see that. We all can see that. She practically kills herself just wandering out of her room despite patient orders just to prove that her life is still worthwhile, and if she keeps up with this destructive behavior, then she just might."

He took a moment to pause and look Nick in the eyes, and he shook his head and started to chuckle. "Sorry, man, I... It's stressing knowing that she isn't all right—and I'm digressing."

He rummaged around in his pocket for his phone and showed him a picture of a video camera he had lying around that a cousin of his gave him. "I've got this camera here. It's working, all right, but all I'll need is a sturdy tripod and some video editing software. I just want to give her her shot at directing films. Filming herself like one would in a video blog to help cope with it all. It could turn out real good for her, Nick."
