Ylesse, dubbed the home of opportunity. It's a prosperous land by the sea that thrives on trade and exports of gold, iron, and coal. Many see Ylesse as a place to begin anew, or the beginning of a new adventure. It's a land of many different people from faraway countries, where the magical muddles with the non-magical and tinges the land with a peaceful beauty. Adventurers slay the monsters drawn by magic, creating a balance on which the prosperity of the kingdom resides.
Many different creatures from around the world, both sentient and non-sentient, can be found scattered throughout the land. Some are drawn by magic, others by the promise of peace, wealth, or adventure.
Some races form communities of their own that mirror their homes, while others blend into the culture of the humans that founded the country. Those foreign to Ylesse bring new ideas and inventions, enriching and improving the culture there already.

However, despite the so-called Golden age, the country is without a king, and nobles squabble for power. The country's political power has been in sharp decline for the past decade since the last king's passing. Many believe the country's fate is dissolution, as there is no new king in sight.
Ylesse has become the target of aggressive neighboring countries who desire the peace, prosperity, and resoures the country provides. Ylesse's only form of protection are mercenary groups, hired by nobles in lieu of a standing army. This plan has proved to be successful, despite the nobles not only fighting against the surrounding countries, but against each other as well.

While four of the five providences have nobles to protect them, the fifth, Tilon, has none. They had once been protected by the noble of the neighboring providence of Vetal, but when the noble was assassinated, it left Tilon to the mercy of the aggressive country Teva.
Teva, a much smaller country, seeks to take the entirety of Ylesse while it is in chaos. Seeing Tilon unprotected, they plan to use the providence to test the waters and officially declare war on Ylesse.

The only hope for Tilon is a mercenary group, dubbed 'the Shieldmercenaries'. They act on their own with no noble to hire them, seeking to protect their homeland. Rumor has it they are no ragtag group of starving mercenaries- They possess potential beyond that of hired thugs, and their leader is said to have the hereditary mark of royalty.
Though it is passed off as nothing more than rumor, there is more truth to it than many would believe. Unbeknownst to the Shieldmercenaries, their fate is tied to all of Ylesse.
