Eve looked around wildly, trying to stay calm as she brainstormed possible strategies. She tried to keep her cool and think about things reasonably, instead of losing her mind, which it felt like was going to happen. Okay...the head reaper showed us what to do if we were attacked... now we need to find a way out of here. Let's analyze the situation. It took us forever to get down here, there's a hellish red mist that's making looking ten feet in front of you impossible, it's hot as, well, Hell, and let's see... hordes of angry vengeful damned spirits want to painfully end out existence. That covers just about it. Now then...

Evangeline could only think of one thing to do at that moment to get out of there as quickly as possible. It was what she wanted to do at the time she had been murdered, though she had been unable to. Run.

"Rand," she said. "Let's sprint for it. Unless, of course, you've got a better idea. In which case, let's hear it."

The Afterlife

Meanwhile, in the afterlife. Mikel then came up to Pagan seeing her torturing her father yet again. Coming towards her. Mikel said to her "Geez, you sure must love your dad a lot" in a sarcastic tone of voice. "Seriously, I think your dad's had enough torture, why don't I take care of it" Mikel added to Pagan. Noticing the blood running down the side of Pagan's face, he wiped it away with his hands. Getting out his scythe, Mikel looked at Pagan's dad with a sense of seriousness. Mikel's eyes were piercing and serious. He may not sem serious at first but when it comes to punishment for souls that have committed sins, he shows the word "seriousness" on his face...

Rand was about to answer when suddenly something rushed out of the mist behind Eve. It looked like it was human once, but countless years of torment had warped it nearly beyond recognition. It had animal like characteristics right down to the pointed fangs and fingernails more akin to filthy claws. It was only after he was spinning past Eve that Rand realized he had moved... his body felt so light he had not noticed the action. Rand's heel spin around with him and then up above his head as the creature wildly charged the next target. Rand's heel came down right between it's eyes and it let out a shriek before dissolving into a cloud of mist. Rand had barely felt an impact when he hit and had to struggle to regain his balance from his attack. This mist.... maybe this was what let the spirits here take form. If so... it would be a never ending fight.

"You are right" Rand said to Eve and grabbed her hand to avoid getting lost in the mist. "We need to move, now"

Eve held onto Rand's hand tightly as they ran half-blindly through the veil of bloody red vapor. She stumbled and almost fell over the unidentifiable masses, which she concluded were most likely bodies... bodies of what? Everything there was dead. She heard bestial roars coming from behind them, indicating that they were being persued by more demonic creatures. Their feet pounded the dusty ground as they charged on. The calls of the beasts seemed to be drawing nearer, but that could have been her mind playing tricks on her, forcing her to pick up the pace. Even so, they did not appear to be far behind. The mist surrounded them, appearing to be closing in as they pushed their way through. The shadows were more frequent, dashing here and there all around them. The killer heat didn't help much, either. It felt like running through a super heated desert within a giant celestial oven. It seemed to take longer going out than coming in, even though they were sprinting like crazy. Evangeline began panting heavily as they made their way across the vast wasteland.

Pagan looks over at Mikel for a moment and he wipes the blood from her cheeks and her image begins to fade to normal. She stepped back, the first day she had felt hate towards her father still lingered under her skin, made her cheeks heat up with rage. Pagan sighs, turning around and biting her cheek, walking down the street away from her father and Mikel.

She grasped onto her scythe tightly, her knuckles turning white as she did so.

Rand began to realize how they were able to find their way to the entrance of Hell so easily. He could actually FEEL the gateway now. Perhaps it had something to do with the situation or more likely it was something to do with his unknown reaper abilities. In any case it was like he had a voice in the back of his mind telling him where to go. The weirdest part is that the voice sounded feminine....which at any other moment in his life would have given him pause. Around a corner of rock jutting from the ground and the gateway they had come through was staring him in the face. With a load creak, the door began to close as they ran full pelt towards it.

"We have to get through, I don't think we can open it once it closes!" Rand shouted at Eve and pushed her in front of him.

Eve gasped in surprise as she was pushed in front of Rand. The door was closing at a terrifying rate. She was reminded for a moment of those Indiana Jones movies, where he'd slide under the brick wall and grab his hat just in the nick of time. She wasn't sure they'd be so lucky.

She charged forward faster than she thought she could go, still gripping Rand's hand so tight that her own hand was numb. And yet, the door was still closing... But they were so close! Evangeline felt the hellish souls nipping at her heels. The demonic heat scorched her inside and out, threatening to trip her up or slow her down. They couldn't afford either. They were closing in fast on the door. Three feet, two, one... With a cry, Eve crashed through the small opening and turned around just in time to pull with all her might on Rand's forearm, yanking him through with her, and out of the fiery depths of hell. She stumbled backwards, pulling them both to the ground.

With an echoing slam the door snapped shut behind them. Rand lay still for a few moments trying to catch his breath. In the mad rush to the exit they had been running for a long while and Rand's body took awhile to cool down once he was warmed up. It was only as he stared into Eve's eyes only a few inches from his own did he realize that she had pulled him down to the ground as they fell through the door. Blushing furiously Rand leaped up and fell backwards into a sitting position. He hoped Eve would assume the red in his cheeks to be from exertion and not embarrassment.

"Think this was a lesson to teach us what will happen if we go back on our contract?" Rand exclaimed as the thought came to him. If they went back on their contracts there is little doubt they would be sentenced to eternal damnation. He shivered at the thought of going back to that place.

Eve sat up and hugged her knees to her chest, catching her breath after such an extreme run. Adrenaline still caused her body to shake, and her voice cracked slightly when she spoke.

"I think... That's our new everyday job," she said. "On the bright side, maybe not all the spirits will go to hell. Maybe we'll get a good one, and a trip on the road to the Pearly Gates. I mean, not every spirit is hell bound, right?" She brushed a lock of sizzling black hair out of her face and fanned herself with her hand. The demonic heat still hadn't worn off. A small breeze blew north, bringing some slight relief from the sting off the remaining hellish heat and mist.

"I would just as soon be stuck with getting rid of the ones in the normal world" Rand said and brushed a bit of sweat from his brow. "I am not cut out for all this spirit world stuff". Rand flexed his fingers, still remembering the feeling of that spirit he had dissipated. It was awkward enough to fight an enemy that only barely resembled a human, but to fight something that did not entirely exist on the physical plain with his skill set was next to impossible.

"I just wonder what are we supposed to do during our downtime? I mean... do we just go about out lives normally back in the real world?" Rand asked Eve. It may be easy for him since he lived alone anyways, but for Eve who still saw her family on a daily basis it must be awkward.

Eve placed a hand to her forehead, testing her temperature. It was coming down nicely.  She shook her head in response to Rand's question and said, "I've got to check up on my mom and my sister, but it's so weird. I mean, I'll be around forever, but they'll both eventually die, and-" she cut off. Would she have to reap her family's souls?

"-and I probably won't see them ever again." she avoided touching on that notion. "And in four or five years, my sister will be older than me! Physically, anyways. Then, she'll end up marrying, having kids... all that good stuff. And I'll watch it all happen." She thought about what it would be like to see her future nieces and nephews. Eve probably wouldn't be able to appear to them. It would just be too strange.

"There are ways of looking older than you are, even without special Reaper abilities" Rand said thoughtfully. Indeed he had pulled that stunt a few times back in his younger days. Sometimes to obtain work positions otherwise unsuited to his age and also to get into various clubs are bars. Though he never had been an especially heavy drinker.

"We should probably find our wayward teacher and let him know that the mission was a success" Rand said to Eve.

Eve sighed and stood up, her legs still wavering because of the physically taxing run, though she didn't really have "muscles" anymore, so to speak. That sprint had been more stressing and hardcore than she thought. She never wanted to visit that godforsaken place ever again, though she knew it was only a matter of time before she was called on to do just that once again. Oh boy.

"Yeah," she breathed. "Let's get going." She began walking shakily, thoughts occupied by the future.

"Good idea but I have no idea where he vanished to" Rand said and pushed himself to his feet. His body still felt unusual, he wondered if perhaps he was light headed from all the adrenaline. Now that Rand thought about it, his typical Anemic reaction to prolonged exertion had not happened.... Maybe something really did happen to his body when he was made into a Reaper.

"That's right your body is all better now" a familiar feminine voice said from somewhere around his ankles. Rand looked down to see a most unusual black cat.

"That is it. I have officially gone insane. A cat is talking to me" Rand said more to himself than to Eve.

"What is so bad about being spoken to by a feline of my stature" It said to Rand. "Some thanks I get for guiding you out of Hell"

Rand was at the end of his rope, but then again the voices did match. Maybe this was some kind of Reaper thing again. Logic seemed to hold no place in this world.

Eve raised a quizzical eyebrow at the cat, wondering why it was speaking. This place just kept getting weirder and weirder. A cat, of all things, was speaking. Speaking. It didn't quite click with Eve. She could handle a trip to Hell and back... but not talking cats. What-

I guess you wouldn't take so kindly to a talking bird either, Evangeline."

She felt a pressure on her shoulder. Eve slowly turned her head to see a small, sleek raven perched there. On. Her. Shoulder.

Eve jumped and swatted the thing away. "Sweet Jesus!" she yelled in surprise.

The raven fluttered onto the ground before her. "My dearest Evangeline, it would be wise not to mention such a name in an inappropriate place such as the Underworld."

Eve grew more suspicious, less surprised. "Don't call me 'dearest'. Now, who are you, why are you here, and why are you speaking?"
She looked over at Rand, as if to say, You see this too, right?

Eve turned back to the raven, who began talking again. "I am your familiar, Evangeline, here to assist and guide you on your many Reaper duties. My name is Saphier. But you may call me anything you like."

Eve was stunned. She crouched down and held her hand out. The small bird stepped into her palm, and she rose again. Despite the downright strangeness of the situation, Eve smiled at the raven, Saphier. It's voice reminded her of a... librarian. It was odd, but that's what it reminded her of. She wasn't sure why. Even so, Evangeline found that she may start to like this bird.

She looked down at the black cat. "Thanks for helping us back there."

The Afterlife

Mikel looked at Pagan's father, her father had hate in his eyes, his hands shaky and murderous and he had a grim and devilish smile on his face.
Looking at Mikel with an evil intent, he attempted to attack Mikel with his sinned and bloodstained hands. However, Mikel stopped him with his scythe and sliced his head forming a deep and bloody gash on his head. Enraged, Pagan's father strangled Mikel. Mikel gasped for air as he started to lose consciousness. As Mikel was being strangled, he elbowed Pagan's fathers hands and sliced them off.

Huffing and puffing, Mikel said to him "Pretty strong but not strong enough"

"It was my pleasure Nyaa~" The cat responded and began licking it paw and rubbing it's face as all cats seemed to do. Rand chuckled to himself as he watched it casually clean its self. Such an ordinary action after defying the laws of nature as Rand knew them. Not to mention the bird perching on Eve's shoulder. He did not know how she could take it all in such stride. She must have been an unusual woman even before she had become a Reaper.

"Seriously? You are going to start adding 'Nyaa' at the end of whatever you say like this is some anime?" Rand said to the cat. If cats could bristle indignantly, that is what she did.

"That was just a joke you thick headed Ape. It is a wonder you humans think you are the most advanced beings in the world, especially the men." The cat said sourly. Great, just what he needed as a companion. An arrogant cat that looked down on humans and more so on males. He did not know what this familiar business was, but clearly he was going to be stuck with her for a long while... So he was going to have to get used to her.

"Lilith, that is your name right?" Rand paused, he did not know how he knew but somehow the name was seared into his brain. "I appreciate the help, but where exactly did you and Eve's new friend come from?"

"From the underworld naturally" Lilith said in a matter-of-fact tone. "We were part of the contract you formed with the Reapers when they offered you the deal. You should have read the fine print"

Eve scowled. Fine print. It had actually proven difficult to read the thing at all through the shocking haze of...death. The cat, Lilith, sure did have an attitude. Eve could tell that she was actually a friendly being though, despite the initial snippiness.

Her own familiar, too, was quite a character. Eve wouldn't have been surprised if the raven had been sporting small, round "spectacles" and maybe a tie. If he were human, Saphier probably could've passed as a professor or a doctor or something. Heck, he was probably smart anyhow.

Something clicked within her head. Saphier did remind her of someone! The librarian at her old school. Mr...Grant? Something along those lines. They had almost the exact same voice... same attitude, too. Mr.Grant was an elderly, slim, spectacled man, but he had the spirit of a youngster. He was always reading when he wasn't adjusting his poorly fit glasses. He was a nice man, always ready to engage in a meaningful conversation. He gave good advice, too. If her familiar and her librarian were anything alike, Eve knew that she'd get along well with her familiar.

Smiling slightly, she addressed Rand. "Looks like I might actually be able to get used to being a Reaper."

Pagan turns to the sound of a fight breaking out and she walks over, fire in her eyes as she does so.

"Nothing personal, Father..." Her Irish accent thickens as she becomes more angry, "Just the way life is."

Her scythe began to glow a bright white and she raises it high over her head, swinging her scythe across his throat as a white light swirls around them. Sudden darkness sweeps over as her father's body slumps, the screeching sound of the soul tearing from his body bounced off towards the sky and his spirit dropped before Pagan.

Pagan lets out a chuckle, snapping her fingers and suddenly her father's spirit was sucked into a dark vortex and sent straight to Hell's Gates.

She turns as Talia appears next to her, her fur billowing in the aftershock wind.

You have done the right thing. Talia says, her electric blue eyes brought Pagan back to a calmer state.

Pagan rests her hand on Talia's back and stands for a moment, not saying a word.

"Speak for yourself" Rand commented as he tried to take his eyes away from Lilith. The thing was stubborn as any woman he had ever met. He had a feeling that she was going to try to be right in any conversation they ever had. If Rand said snow was white, she would say it was black just to spite him. Maybe that was the main reason why Rand had never tried to find a girl for himself.... or maybe he was just lazy.

"I don't suppose we are able to trade familiars?" Rand said and received another indignant look from Lilith. "What I am not allowed to make jokes too?"

"Oh you can" Lilith said with a low growl in the back of her throat. "But just know that I have a long.... long memory and have nothing better to do but get back at you"

Rand wondered when Mikel would show up again. The test was done, but Rand did not know how to return to the mortal world, where he assumed they would be stationed and called upon whenever a soul broke loose.
