Dean Lyrett

"If this is what I must do, then I shall see it done right."

0 · 603 views · located in The Planet of Epoch.

a character in “Humanity's Last Hope - The Fall of Epoch”, as played by Centi85

Description

Dean has long, straight, shaggy black hair that normally would be kept combed back or to the sides, but now hangs down in front of his face. A ghost of a mustache lines his upper lip as well, which is the only thing he keeps trimmed nowadays. His eyes are a bronze color, the mutagen turning them from their once stale brown into a color Dean can't say he dislikes. He has a tall, average built and is exceptionally muscular, however the left half of his body, from his neck to his mid torso and arm resembles the tough skin of a crocodile, being cracked and rough, but with a green shine.
Normally he can be seen in a white T-shirt, covered with a simple black leather jacket, as well as a pair of blue jeans that are slightly torn and stained, and a belt made to accommodate shotgun shells. He wears also black boots, and a silver chain around his neck, a parting gift from his mother whom until now, he had taken for granted.

Personality

Dean usually comes off as blunt and apathetic. Normally he masks his emotions and true feelings quite well, though it should be known that he cares in fact for many things, not including himself. Typically lazy in a way, he prefers to spend his time in the background, observing quietly before acting, but will step forward if the situation so requires. He is extremely intelligent, learning only when he feels the need to, he is a vast collection of useless facts. If one can get past his outer shell, they would find that behind the uncaring demeanor, resides a gentle, loving person who would be the most loyal of acquaintances. Never turning his back to a friend in need, he'd sooner give up his own life than watch a someone he's grown close to perish, especially now that he's doomed to die anyway.

Equipment

Dean carries with him a 12 gauge shotgun with limited ammunition, carrying only 11 more shells he uses it for emergencies only. He preferably wields a .45 semi-automatic sidearm, enjoying the maneuverability and accuracy, let alone the sheer firepower over the close-quarters spraying weapon, but has only two magazines left. Besides the two guns, he has little else, having either lost them in skirmishes, or simply felt no need for their presence.

History

Dean joined up on the little endeavor simply out of curiosity, and the need for something more. His life at home had become tedious and dreadfully boring, let alone it was at a standstill, so why not? The idea of extra terrestrial beings was quite intriguing, and Dean couldn't help but feel interested. Upon his arrival, he was taken aback by the large buildings and cities, as well as the beings themselves. He spent most of his time wandering aimlessly, simply taking in the scenery, and after a short while even began picking up on the lingual patterns. While he is no expert, he can do some translations.

Upon the sudden violence and announcement of the mutagen, Dean couldn't really say he was all to displeased. Because he felt no attachment to anyone on this planet, he had really no issue with having to face up against them. This was exactly the excitement he needed to assuage his own virus of boredom. Dean did well in masking his true feelings, and joined up with the resistance, however, it wasn't until after his little guerrilla group was massacred that he felt the true weight of the situation. He wanders now in search of this woman who reportedly is immune to the virus, hoping to get her safely to her destination. While his life was meaningless to him, the lives back home weren't, and he'd do whatever it took to save them.

So begins...

"Get down!" hollered Dean from behind the two people as he raised his sidearm. Aligning the sights on the creature he squeezed the trigger and felt the gun kick. Quickly he readjusted himself, placing both hands on it now before firing again, three more rounds, each penetrating into the vicious mouth of the creature before him. He watched the bullets impact and tear out the back, splattering it somewhat and causing the wall and floor behind it to take on a new coating of green ooze. The creature reared and collapsed, a puddle of the thick substance forming around it as it continued to bleed out, but otherwise remained unmoving.

Dean slowly lowered the weapon, eying the idle creature. If need be, he'd pull out his shotgun to finish it, but it looked like the .45s did the trick. Sighing he stood up straight now, and looked to the two before him. A young woman in a labcoat, she was fairly tall and quite pretty with her hair tied back, but oddly he noted, her eyes were of different colors. He made a point also to notice the odd device around her wrist, but said nothing of it.
The man next to her seemed to be a pilot, or so his uniform states, and a gruff looking one at that. He looked the man over momentarily, he had messy hair and work-hardened face. He glanced only once at the scales along his arm before shifting his gaze back to the woman.

"Well, what do we have here? I take it you're miss Alyssa Erde, no?" he nodded to her, putting his pointer finger to his forehead as if to tip his make-believe hat at her. "And you," he turned to the other man. "Pilot eh? Nice." He cleared his throat and dusted himself off, then extended a hand in greeting to both of them.

"Name's Dean. Dean Lyrett."

Alyssa turned around with Sean to see the horrible leech like beast about 50 feet down from them. "Don't move, don't do anything" she hissed under her breath. The creature was exactly what she had feared might have started to inhabit the abandoned underground system. Alyssa began to have thoughts rush quickly through her head, one after another, and none of them were feasible considering the Viscearri were actually a somewhat fast creature. Then suddenly a gun sounded, and Alyssa ducked instinctively, "SHIT" she shouted as she hit the ground.

The Viscearri dropped to the ground writhing and screeching. She turned on her heels to see their saviour running up just behind them. Alyssa's jaw dropped and she looked to Sean, then back to the man before them. He introduced himself, and like everyone she met nowadays, seemed to know exactly who Alyssa was. He introduced himself, and Alyssa took a moment to process the whole situation then spoke, "Well hey" she croaked, "I can't believe someone else was down here... I can't believe even more that there are more humans getting around in the city".

Alyssa's mind wandered off, most of the humans who were alive now had split into two groups on Epoch, the fighters and the hiders, and it was common knowledge there were more hiders than fighters. She came back to the conversation shortly after, "So Dean, what are you doing down here?" Alyssa's wrist computer beeped, it was picking up Dean's mutation, she lifted her arm up so she could see the screen, "Wow... you're fairly far into your mutation" she muttered to herself, "yet you seem fairly cognitive, interesting". Alyssa pushed a few buttons on the screen and a syringe popped out, "Mind if I take a sample of your blood?" she asked nonchalantly. Alyssa then realised how rude she must have sounded, "My apologies, this is Sean"

"Well hey, I can't believe someone else was down here... I can't believe even more that there are more humans getting around in the city."

Dean smiled again, somewhat amused. So, this is the great Alyssa Erde? She seemed like a nice woman, and it seemed he had arrived just in time. He nodded again, thinking for a moment. "The humans are scarce, far and inbetween but we're around. I think though that currently any larger groups have been wiped out. What's left are either those who really know how to defend themselves, or the idiots who've hidden away." he nodded a bit to himself, hoping his words didn't sound as depressing as he thought they did. He was somewhat relieved when she then changed the subject.

"So Dean, what are you doing down here?"

The usual question, he thought to himself as he opened his mouth to respond. He didn't get much time to answer however, when suddenly the odd device on her wrist began beeping. He looked at it with a mild curiosity, wondering exactly what it's purpose was. "Wow... you're fairly far into your mutation" she spoke, "yet you seem fairly cognitive, interesting. Mind if I take a sample of your blood?" Dean raised an eyebrow in question. Now that wasn't the usual question, nor was it the best of conversation starters. Still, he'd heard of her and her research, and it might be for the better. He ignored the apology that came afterwards as he held out his hand. Normally he wouldn't care, but right now he was all too happy to help.

He allowed her to take a sample as she introduced her companion, and he nodded again to him. The name sounded familiar, but he couldn't figure out from where. He shrugged the idea away and returned to the conversation at hand.

"To answer your previous question, I was down here simply because I needed an escape route. I've been wandering for a fair while, and I heard some noises up this way.. I suppose had I listened to the voice in my head that told me to go back, I may not have gotten the pleasure of meeting you two, let alone possibly saving you from... whatever that is." Dean gestured to the dead worm, then looked to the two guns in yours and Sean's hands. "But then again, you might have been able to take care of yourselves." He smiled again before continuing. "Either way, it's not safe here. We really should either get moving, or get out. Worse things reside down here and while I've never seen one of those, I have no doubt there's more. I may not have enough ammunition to last us that long, and I don't know about your supply."

Sean was silent through most of the conversation. Not because he didn't want to talk, but because he literally blanked out. The infection, although having a low physical effect, was taking a fairly large toll on his mind. Black outs like this weren't uncommon to him at this point, and he knew his time to get into one of those cages was near.

"Either way, it's not safe here. We really should either get moving, or get out. Worse things reside down here and while I've never seen one of those, I have no doubt there's more. I may not have enough ammunition to last us that long, and I don't know about your supply."

He managed to come to by the time Dean finished talking. "Ah, right. If we need a exit, we can take this side path and it'll bring us straight up to the surface. We'll be a bit far from the center, but at least we won't have to wrestle with giant worms... As for ammo, we are pretty low. I've got less than a clip for this gun here, and Alyssa just has the six shots in that revolver." Sean hadn't told the truth at the very end. Yes, the majority of their weapons were right there in their hands, but he had one more weapon. He had a small snub-revolver, smaller than a computer mouse, hidden in the inside of his jacket. In the miniscule gun, there were only two shots left. Despite the amount, that gun gave Sean a lot of relief. Relief that if he were really ever to mad, he'd be ready to stop himself.

Now with another person to guard Alyssa, Sean quickly climbed over some rubble to a side path. "C'mon! The worms won't wait for you, ya know."

Alyssa took a blood sample from Dean while he continued to answer her questions. The syringe withdrew and began to analyse Dean's blood. "This will take about... thirty minutes" she mumbled to herself, slightly annoyed, since most DNA sample took about ten minutes. But, that in itself was intriguing to her. Alyssa listend to the boys before her talking in the background and lifted her head back up just in time to see Sean moving over some rubble to a side path, "We aren't getting far into the city without weapons!" she grunted as she followed Sean over the rubble and along the path, "I know that not too far from a Kismet communications tower there is an old military-style hidden base underground that was used by humans... I often conducted experiments there" Alyssa reminisced slightly and checked her wrist-computer, "But its going to take about 6 hours out of our journey... It won't be so bad if we don't get held up... but going into the centre of the city is a near death sentence without more weaponry... the Kismet that aren't mutated yet still live there and kill any humans on sight now... no questions asked..."

Alyssa's blood turned cold at her last sentence. The thought of dying like that scared her, but in some odd ways motivated her to push on too and fight against those who had damned everyone else on Epoch. She followed Sean closely but turned back constantly to make sure Dean was with them. Oddly she wasn't as concerned about Dean as she was about Sean. Dean seemed to be very cognitive, but Sean was very quiet at intervals, and while many people are like that, Alyssa knew from experience that some people undergoing mutation tended to trouble communicating orally... Dean looked at his arm as Alyssa finished taking the blood, and again took a moment to inspect the device around her wrist. It intrigued him somewhat, but that was the least of things going on in his head. He looked to the other man as he suddenly spoke.

"Ah, right. If we need a exit, we can take this side path and it'll bring us straight up to the surface. We'll be a bit far from the center, but at least we won't have to wrestle with giant worms... As for ammo, we are pretty low. I've got less than a clip for this gun here, and Alyssa just has the six shots in that revolver."

Dean nodded, that wasn't good, but it was something. "I have this clip, plus an extra," he said, holding up the sidearm. "Eleven shots left for the shotgun." He watched the man a moment, sensing he was thinking about something, but didn't feel it necessary to ask. He then watched as Sean started over a pile of rubble down another pathway.

"C'mon! The worms won't wait for you, ya know."
said Sean again. Alyssa began speaking, stating that she really didn't want to go along any further without the proper weaponry, or at least some more ammunition. An old base? Interesting, he'd never been there, in fact this was his first journey to this part of the city. It might prove to be interesting, but then again, what did she say? Survivors that kill any other humans on sight? Oh lord, that's no good...

Sighing he nodded, ushering Alyssa past to follow Sean before taking up the rear, once more placing both hands on the pistol before doing a quick sweep, ensuring that nothing was stalking them. He looked into the darkness, knowing well that there were plenty of grotesque beasts out there that intended to do them harm, but for now he allowed himself the rare thought that they were alone, and it was safe to proceed. He turned, satisfied and jogged quickly to catch up, slowing down as he came up on the other two and doing another quick check. Dean would continue this at varying intervals as they walked, and noted that Alyssa did the same, though it seemed more so to check on himself than for kimset mutants. He managed a nod each time he caught her gaze, and allowed a warm reassuring smile to spread across his face. Even if he was bound to die, he'd make sure she lived, and for now that meant making sure she felt safe enough to continue on.

Getting more weapons didn't sound like a bad idea at the time. But, they were pressed for time. 72 hours may sound like a lot, but in reality, they had much less. The longer we waste, more and more mutants will go out into the streets, their previously human persona's finally succumbing to the mutagen. And, it wasn't like he and Dean had forever either. Not to mention that base of theirs may have already been ransacked, or worse, infested with mutants and Kismet. He knew they needed it but, was it worth the risk? There was also the option of continuing through the tunnels, but after the worm incident, that didn't seem very plausible.

In such a desolate situation, the usually bright Sean couldn't help but ask himself, "Why am I doing this?" He quickly shook off the thought. He knew that he had to do this. It was his responsibility as a soldier. But then another thought ran through his head, "I don't want to die..."

He turned around to look at the other two and said, "Well, if you're absolutely positive that this base of yours has good weaponry, then... I think we should go check it out."

"Well, if you're absolutely positive that this base of yours has good weaponry, then... I think we should go check it out."

Dean looked forward as the other man, Sean, now spoke again in response to Alyssa. He knew what thoughts the man was probably thinking, he felt the same. Should they risk going for a base that could very well be overrun, with such short time? Was it really worth it, or would they die with the detour. But then again, would they die because they didn't take it to re-equip themselves? Dean knew he'd die either way, but he was bent on ensuring the girl's safety, as was Sean. He finally made up his own mind, and nodded to the man.

"It's a fair risk, but it'll be worth it if we are able to pull it off. We just have to manage our shots if worse comes to worst." Dean smiled again to Alyssa before adding, "I have no doubt that he and myself can keep you safe, aye, Sean?"

Alyssa nodded in agreement with Sean and Dean, "I know how it sounds guys..." she said with slight annoyance, "But everywhere is dangerous... and we won't... I won't survive if we don't get these weapons..." She climbed over more rubble and kept following Sean, "The base also has a DNA analyser that's stronger than what I can analyse on my wrist-computer here" she mused.

Alyssa looked back to Dean, "You know you're a really unique case..." she said containing intense curiosity. "You should be nearly clawing at mine and Sean's face" she said without batting an eyelash. Alyssa never was one for beating around the bush, "I think I can use your DNA to maybe identify the means to start looking for an antidote, or immunisation".

Alyssa turned back forward to keep following Sean, "How far until we reach the surface?" she asked impatiently. As they kept walking Alyssa was growing more uncomfortable being underground, with those leech-worms moving in down there and god knows what else, she realised her idea of using the underground to get to the centre was rash and ill-though-out.

Alyssa's interest in these kinds of things amazed Sean, especially considering the predicament they were in. Sean would not go as far as to say she was giddy, but she definitely did not seem deathly scared. But Sean thought it would be all for the better, maybe instead of killing each other, again, we could find a cure or something, save both our races... But that was just hopeful thinking.

"How far until we reach the surface?"
Sean looked back at her, "Not far, this was basically just a-" He suddenly stopped. A low grumbling sound could be heard in the direction of the main tunnel, but this time, it sounded a lot more menacing. Worms... It just had to be worms... He turned back to his compatriots, "I think we should hurry-" A loud screech interrupted him, "RUN!" This time, three worms were on their tail, all three of them many times bigger than the first one...

(OOC: So basically we'll get outside (if we don't get eaten) then Dean/Alyssa is going to have to take the lead.)

Dean looked at the two speak amongst each other, and he admired the girl for her courage.

"How fare until we reach the surface?" she said. Dean wasn't entirely sure, he had never taken this course, so he looked to Sean for guidance as well, waiting for the man to respond.

"No far, this is basically just a-" the man got no further, and Dean heard it too. A sound, much like the ones from earlier, that of the worms. Dean listened, noting that it sounded closer, louder, a lot angrier. He waited, looking into the shadows behind them as he raised the pistol. Great, just great. He hadn't expected anything less, but he didn't want to encounter more in such close quarters.

"I think we should hurry," said Sean. Dean was about to respond, about to voice his agreement when suddenly a terrible, ear shattering screech came echoing through the tunnels. "RUN!" said the man. Dean looked back, his vision falling onto three massive worms, several times larger than the previous one. He reacted instantly, almost without thinking, idling pushing Alyssa onward behind Sean, though not hard, as he instinctively fired off two shots into the first. He didn't wait to see if they had any affect.

"Damnit!" yelled Dean as he chased behind the two. He took the time now to put away the pistol, and stopped short, turning around and pulling the shotgun from his back, he pulled the trigger and felt the gun kick. Quickly he pumped, two metallic clicks coming from the weapon as a shell ejected, trailed by a wispy smoke. He fired again before turning his back to continue running. "I sure as hell hope you know how to get out of here!" said Dean as he reached down and began loading in several more shells. He knew he probably wouldn't try that move again, but he wanted to be totally ready if need be. He pumped the gun again, another empty casing falling from the gun as a fresh one was loaded into the chamber.

Sean heard several shotgun shots go off behind him, but he didn't want to look back, he had to make sure they got out safely. He was right about to reach where he thought the exit was when he suddenly stopped. A cave in had blocked the exit, and now they had no way out but to fight, is what Sean thought at first. But then he remembered there were emergency and service halls all throughout these tunnels, since earthquakes were frequent on Epoch. He quickly scanned to the right of him, the worms right behind them, nothing there. He then, taking a chance, yelled out, "Turn to the left!" He made a sharp left, hoping they would meet with another passage. Luckily for the three of them, the story does not end here. There they were, in a narrow, long passage, parallel to the side tunnel they were in, but this one was dimly lit by emergency lights, still working, as this truly was an emergency. Sean then looked around, making sure everyone was there, and thankfully, they were fine, albeit very exhausted. The worms were helplessly trying to fit through the narrow doorway, but gave up after noticing that one of their brother's had died in Dean's firing, and the rest seemed fairly wounded. Sean let out a sigh of relief, but quickly regained focus, there troubles definitely would not end there. "Alright, this is a Kismet emergency passage, built in case of, well, emergency. If we keep going that way, we should find our way out. Where, though, I'm not sure..."

Alyssa was about to begin another conversation when Sean and Dean kicked into over drive and were chaperoning her forwards towards the surface. The unmistakeable grumblings of the Viscearii were echoing through the tunnel and as they were running Alyssa took a moment to look behind them watching as Dean fired a gun and one of the worms fell...

"Turn left" is all Alyssa heard but followed the instructions and ended up just behind Sean with Dean bringing up the rear in, as Sean called it A Kismet Emergency Tunnel. Alyssa breathed heavily, "Holy Hell" she huffed. The worms were trying to squeeze into the small space but their size was too much and they left... Just in time too because Alyssa could see cracks forming where the worms were trying shove through.

"We..." she breathed in, "Have to... Keep... going..." she knew it was the only choice they had, but she needed these two to want to still keep going and not give up. Although she suspected they were chivalrous and loyal, you never knew what people were going to do in times like this. Alyssa looked down at he watch then to Sean, "We've wasted nearly and hour and a half since we met..." she said grimly, "But i'm not blaming you..." she smiled weakly then turned to Dean, "or you either just so you know... But we've gotta keep going...." Alyssa stepped past Sean and looked down the tunnel, "This looks like it only goes deeper" she said with a slight tone of worry, "I'm not afraid of the beasts down there" she said looking at the boys, "as much as I am by how much time we have left..."

Alyssa sighed and put a foot forward, "We haven't got another opt-"

Suddenly a large crack resounded and the ground began to shake. Alyssa lost her footing and fell to the ground, "Is that an earthquake?!" she shouted. As she attempted to stand back up suddenly the ground began to spilt the stench of decaying bodies filled the air, as Alyssa looked beneath her she noticed the Emergency Shaft was opening up right where she lay. "There's a cavern underneath us!" she shouted.

Not uncommon for Epoch really... The planet was famous for is honeycomb like caves... it was like having a world beneath world as the cavern's often had tree-like plants growing and illuminating fauna and flora so it was like walking through the sixties on a trip. Alyssa scrambled to get to her feet but the floor opened wide and suddenly she was falling into the cavern, right down into a lake.

Dean breathed a heavy sigh of relief as they escaped the worms, and nodded to them in respect as he watched them attempt to no avail to get through the small opening. They retreated soon, and finally he relaxed. He turned his attention now to where he was, a dimly lit tunnel, Sean saying it was an emergency tunnel. Interesting... Looking around, Dean never was underground a lot, so he was completely unaware of these little passages. He turned his attention to the others now as Alyssa spoke.

He raised an eyebrow, somewhat amused at the girl's words as she urged them to press on. He really didn't need the reassurance, he assumed she'd be in more use of it, but apparently she was just as strong willed as Dean had assumed. Nodding in agreement, he was caught completely off guard by the cracking noise that echoed through the tunnel, and just managed to maintain his balance as the ground shook and split. What a terrible stench, Dean though as the smell of decaying bodies wafted up into the little passage.

"There's a cavern underneath us!"

He didn't get much time to react as suddenly he witness Alyssa fall through a massive crack that tore down the center of the tunnel, claiming her like the worms wanted so much to do.

Dean stumbled as he made his way forward, still slightly off balance and he dropped to his knees, peering down into the darkness. He heard a splash, and was somewhat relieved. If she fell into water, there's a better chance of her survival, unless if course it was shallow. "Alyssa!" Dean yelled down as he waited for her response. "Damnit. Sean, do you have a rope? Anything?" Dean wasn't sure how far down it was, as there was nothing to illuminate the cavern beneath them. Sighing he looked around for anything to help. He didn't really want to descend into the unknown horrors that lie in the darkness.

When Sean saw the gaping hole consume Alyssa, at first he was shocked. He did not hear the splash, nor did he hear Dean's questions. He simply dived in after her. After all, if she was dead what was the point to their survival? The next thing he knew, he was half-drowning in murky water. He struggled to swim back up to the surface, until he noticed that the water wasn't all that deep, maybe a foot shorter than he was, and he simply stood back up. He had landed somewhat on his back, not being the most graceful diver on Epoch, so he was OK, but he could not say the same for Alyssa. "Alyssa!! Are you OK? Where are you?!?" Sean called out into the echoing tunnels.

If Sean was not panicking to try and protect Alyssa, he may have noticed the beauty of the natural cave. The cave looked similar to caves on Earth at first glance, but in reality they were very unique. The typical stalagmites and stalactites were growing green at their tips, the glow coming from a type of bacteria that thrives in caves, and lives off the silicon and water on the tips of these structures. Great pools of water form as well, on account of the abundance of natural groundwater. You could also see various gem-like minerals poking out of the walls, glinting in the dim glow of the bugs. But Sean did not care about any of this at that point, he was just wondering if Alyssa was safe or not.

Alyssa hit the water splayed out so she luckily didn't go head first down into the shallows... That could have been fatal. The pain from hitting the water the way she did though was intense and she opened her mouth to cry out but began swallowing water. Alyssa flailed but managed to stand up with her head just above the water where she was. Coughing and spluttering her eyes began to adjust to the dim glow around the cavern.

It was actually rather beautiful how the plant life underground glowed and the fauna too. But suddenly Alyssa was aware of the sound of Sean calling out to her, "Y-yes I'm here" she coughed roughly... "I'm ok too... nearly drowned... but I'm ok". Alyssa coughed a few more times and her wrist-computer beeped a few times and an automatic light illuminated from her wrist providing a small area of light around her so she could see and be seen.

Alyssa kicked off the bottom of the lake and swam to the side. As she neared the edge she noticed the cavern floor covered in a light, spongy luminescent moss. She was taken aback by its beauty, and the moss was actually capable of creating a fair amount of light so that you could see a small ways ahead. There was no telling how big this cavern was though, because while the life underground did glow, it seemed that for some reason the life in this cavern wasn't as luminescent as other caves on Epoch.

Alyssa coughed the last bits of water from her mouth and took a deep breath and called out, "Sean, are you down here? Where is Dean?" she stood up and shook herself off in a feeble attempt to get dry, "the cave isn't as illuminated as others!" she yelled out, "I think because its below the rail system the Kismet built it might be subjected to pollution.. I think that stops some caves being directly under the city from glowing brightly..."

Alyssa paused for a moment, something was stirring from the darker depths of the cavern, "Not now" Alyssa hissed under her breath, "Be careful!" she called out to her friends...

Dean was somewhat dumbfounded at the audacity of Sean as he witnessed him plummet down after the girl into the darkness below. He heard a splash as he landed in the water, and waited until he could hear his voice. So at least he was safe, but what of her? Sean was calling out to her, and he waited, holding his breath as he stood on the edge of the crack. Finally he heard her too.

"Y-yes I'm here. I'm ok too... nearly drowned... but I'm ok" Dean sighed, that was relieving to hear. Now that they were both safe, it was a matter of either getting up, or following. He looked down into the darkness and as his eyes adjusted somewhat, he found that a glow was emanating from the cave. Most likely some sort of fungus he concluded as he listened to the two's splashing beneath him. He heard her call out for Sean, and then she called to know where he was.

"I'm up here!" Dean yelled down. "The hell do we do now?"

The girl spoke of the cavern being not as lit as others, and he could tell, but at least a light came from her watch now, marking her position. He looked down at the rough shadow broken up by the ripples in the water, and he tapped at the shotgun, waiting impatiently. He didn't like the situation, and he'd be glad to get out of it and into a... dare he say, safer place. Suddenly she yelled again.

"Be careful!"

Careful of what? Dean had a clenching in his gut as he sensed something bad was going to happen again. He looked around warily, eying every dark spot and crevice. He held the shotgun ready, but didn't want to have to fire down on the two, lest he endanger their lives with the spraying weapon. "Is everything okay?!" he said finally.

Kyna had been doubled over, gulping in the oxygen like a fish out of water. Her legs were trembling and felt like jelly. Her left wrist thumped in agony. She looked down into darkness & decay that she just stumbled out from and swallowed, her throat dry. She tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear and tried to slow her racing heart. She could still hear their voices; speaking in our tongue, yet it sounded completely different - hollow, terrifying. Especially when you are running from their armed forces through the darkness, relying on nothing but memories and the faint light from their torches.

Kyna had been in a base with several other survivors for the last month or so. She couldn't really tell anymore, time had a way of blurring the days when they were in peril. There was six of them, two marines, a doctor, two children and herself. Each had contracted the heinous virus and each other them was at varied stages and mutations. Some had pustules, some were delirious, some were constantly bleeding or vomiting. The doctor tried her best to keep them comfortable, until her bones began to shattered under some unknown pressure and she was reduced to laying on the floor, blinking sadly at the roof. One of the children was nearly completely covered in a thick green 'gauze' and the smell was putrid. Kyna herself was suffering the affects, but only superficially. Her already pale skin was fading into almost transparency, her snaking olive-green veins visible and her once onyx eyes were now coated in a pearly film.

She was pacing the room, chewing on her lip as she slipped deep into thoughts. The two marines had been gone for twenty minutes, apparently to raid the armory and nab some weapons. Everyone was starving and if they had any chance of escape, they needed protection. Kyna missed her work; she missed the rock. Their stories, information they hid within themselves, explaining how and when they came into being. The caverns beneath her called to her in a luscious way, making her body tingle. Her passion was strong and the excitement of finding something never seen before by another human being was almost too much for her. She heard her tummy rumble and was snapped from her thoughts, just as there was a hysterically rapping at the door.

"Let us in! For fuck sake let us in!!" Kyna recognised the voices as the marines and ran to the door, and threw it open. She looked between the two wild men and opened her mouth to speak as all-too-familiar shrieks of the Kismet and their 'hunting dogs' echoed around them. Kyna's eyes widened as she glared at the Marines - "W-wha-"

"The armory was overrun. Th-they must've known someone would try to get to it eventually and they were... waiting for us." He panted, cutting her off abruptly. More inaudible shouts and screams resonated through the base and everyone was on their feet, panicked. Kyna could hear the thundering footsteps as she grabbed one of the marines by the shirt - "you lead them right fucking to us!!" she hissed, before turning to face the others.

"No time to get anything! Let's get ou-" An explosion of lasers and bullets deafened Kyna as she hit the floor. As if in slow-motion, she ricocheted off the ground, feeling the vibrations of explosives going off around her. She could see blood, unaware if it was her own or another's. She looked up through debris and greasy hair to see tall figures shadowing in the doorway as another rumble from her stomach echoed in her ears. Only it was louder this time, and Kyna realised it wasn't her starvation calling when the ground began to shake violently. Then, in a flurry of movement, she was falling with the rubble and bodies and she hit the ground, left side first and cried out when she felt her wrist collide with rock. The bone shattered, she could feel it and her pulse quickened. She looked up just in time to see the shadows looking down onto her limp figure and a shot of adrenalin kicked in as she stumbled to her feet and began to run. She had fallen into the caverns she knew, but as the light from above began to fade she began to trip and graze against the jagged walls. She could hear them talking, their voices booming yet muffled and then the stomach-dropping sound of them jumping down into the cavern.

Kyna pushed on faster, her wrist throbbing and through squinted eyes she could see a T-intersection of cave systems up ahead, she instantly chose the left and slowed a little to hear the Kismet slow and plot their next move. She turned, taking a silent breath before her eyes were caught by the glow in the distance. She began to run towards it, and as the dull light grew, she slipped, tripped and regained herself just before she made contact with the ground.

Kyna's head shot to the left she heard noises from within the tunnel and her body stiffened.

Suddenly, she heard voices, a woman telling something to "be careful!" and a male's asking if everything was alright. She moved out from the rocks and saw a woman standing on the edge of the lake. Another was in the lake and the someone was yelling from above. Kyna ran up to the woman, eyes wild and heart pounding. "QUICKLY!" she hissed loudly, making sure, hopefully, they all heard, "THEY ARE COMING!!"

If they didn't hear her, then surely they heard the groans of the Kismet's hunters approaching.

Alyssa stood still, her heart thumping, there was definitely rumbling from ahead beginning to echoe across the cavern. Maybe aftershock she thought, the idea begging in her head to be true.

Suddenly out of the darkness and across the glowing moss ran a woman directly to Alyssa... The woman was half mutated too but her skin was transparent against the dim glow of the moss and it took on the hue too. Her eyes were pale, almost like she had cataracts but the woman was clearly able to see. As she approached Alyssa, the woman hissed that someone was following her. Alyssa struggled in vain to look out into the darkness...

The noises were there, but he physical evidence was not.. "It's the Kismet isn't it?" she whispered in panic as she grabbed the girl and led her into the lake. "KISMET!" Alyssa shouted once, hoping that the other two would hear her and hide.

Alyssa turned to the woman, "Get into the water and crouch down.." Alyssa turned around when she heard the unmistakable howls of "Kismet dogs" - four legged creatures that were renowned for their smelling ability. They looked something like a panther, but with nubbed paws and canine-esque snout. They had four eyes too, two for seeing in daylight and two for night vision... that's how a lot of nocturnal creatures evolved on Epoch, two sets of eyes instead of one pair with light adaptability.

Alyssa hoped to god that the dogs couldn't smell her, Sean or the new girl while they were in the water. Alyssa had led them out deep enough that the water was up to their necks and if need be they could just pop their head underwater. She scanned around the cavern trying to see if she could see Sean... Then suddenly the sound of growling filled the air... The Kismet were in the cavern.

Dean heard the new arrival speak as she came rushing into the cavern and approached Alyssa. From the light on Alyssa's watch, he could just barely make out the girl. While most features remained shrouded in literal darkness, he could just see the transparent skin. She spoke quickly to Alyssa who then repeated it, shouting out simply, "KIMSET!"

Lovely, thought Dean. He wasn't sure what to do, he supposed the others were safe as of now and he listened to them travel deeper into the water, most likely to conceal their scents and attempt to remain submerged and hidden. What was he going to do though? If he jumped down no doubt the splash would alert the creatures to their presence, but then again both the girls had just yelled a warning, and they'd of have to of heard them. He looked around, knowing he didn't have much of a choice, and he could hardly do much to protect them from up here. While he could see a little, he doubted it would be enough to get a clear shot.

Dean scrambled around, standing quickly as he put away the shotgun, pushing it behind him and allowing it to hang on the rough sling. If something happened he could swap it quickly and unleash hell, but until then he was relying on the light-weight, maneuverable and more accurate sidearm. He checked the clip quickly before sliding it back up into the magazine-well, a barely audible click resounding from the weapon as the slide slammed forward. He now simply laid back down, going prone on the edge of the large gaping hole, hoping that they wouldn't see him up on his perch. Holding the pistol out in front of him, he leveled the sights into the darkness and waited as the Kimset and their hounds made their appearance.

He held his breath, for now he'd remain still and out of sight, but should something happen he'd be ready. The one thought that ran through his head however, was the grave reminder that something could be lurking behind him as well. Dean didn't want to turn his head, that would simply merit attention in the Kimset's peripheral vision. He laid there, with his heart pounding, daring them to make a move, his finger caressing the side of the trigger guard, the cold metal somehow being reassurance that they were safe, for now.
