personality

Desdemona is a very quiet soul who tends to distance herself from others out of fear that they will try to antagonize her. She comes off as rude and blunt to most, though it's the only way she's been able to defend herself all these years, so she does it on pure impulse rather than actual antagonistic purposes. In truth, she's actually incredibly lonely and would rather make friends over enemies, but her nature repels people and drives them to distaste rather than fondness. She's become aware of this, so she would rather keep herself away from others to avoid being an inconvenience over actively approaching them to try and talk.

This usually ends up lost in translation however, as people assume that because she makes no effort to communicate, that she's a cold person who thinks herself above everyone when that's far from the truth. Her sarcastic nature is a defense mechanism more than it is an ill intentioned arrogance, and she would much rather have a normal conversation with people if they weren't so hostile to her.

If she does manage to make friends with someone though, she will do anything for them as they made enough effort to get to know and care for her. Her loyalty will be taken to her grave, and it will take an incredibly convincing argument to make her turn her back on anyone who has earned her trust. She is not naive, however, and she will not blindly follow someone or allow anything outside of her moral ideals, her loyalty does not equal stupidity.

She prides herself in having a strong moral compass, or at least as much one can have while being gifted with abilities such as her own. She refuses to be the cause of a life meeting its end unless it is clear it is already inevitable, in which she will consider it a mercy. Even playing with things already dead is something she finds questionable, as she has spent her entire life communicating with the deceased and finds it incredibly immoral to disturb a resting place, regardless of time. There are exceptions to this however, if she deems that a life has been wrongfully taken, she will be upset by it and, if it's small enough, even try bringing it back.

abilities
PARENTAGE | Hades, Greek God of Death and the Underworld.
CRYOKINESIS | Desdemona can shape and manipulate ice, snow, slush, hail, icicles and the like to her advantage, as well as turn water particles in the air into ice, though it's not enough to make much difference. Due to this ability however, she becomes immensely powerful in the rain or near large bodies of water, which may make this her most dominant ability and it's certainly her most preferred one.
OSTEOKINESIS | A mostly unused ability, Desdemona can sense, summon and control bones found lying beneath the ground, using them for either protection or to attack. She can also manipulate her own bones as a last resort, though it is incredibly painful so she steers away from it, and she cannot control the bones of others if they are still inside flesh. She's against the use of this ability not for the grotesque nature of it, but surprisingly for a moral reason. She does not want to disrespect the resting place of the perished, so she will only use this as a last resort.
NECROMANCY | One of her more unique abilities, Desdemona can communicate with the fallen, usually for information or warnings of some kind, and can raise them bodily, though the biggest thing she's managed to bring back was a rat, as she is very wary of playing with dead things and is much more itrigued with speaking with those already gone. Perhaps with some practice, or desperate measures, she could learn to bring something back without the consequences.

character

STRENGTHS | Desdemona is quite observant, noticing things most others would overlook, and she is incredibly talented at adapting to nearly any situation that may be thrown at her. Due to her quiet nature, she often goes unnoticed by those around her, which may allow her to gain access somewhere much easier if she sneaks through. She also has a good sense of direction, managing to navigate her way through large cities with ease even during the evening.
WEAKNESSES | Desdemona is known for being quite temperamental, getting worked up over the smallest offense and her attitude has landed her in trouble on more than a few occasions. Her silence also can backfire, as many are unwilling to take her very seriously without her vocalizing herself clearly. Her sarcastic personality may also clash with many people, as she usually comes across as rude or even mean, which is hardly her intention, but she's far too stubborn to say otherwise and would prefer to wallow in her spite than apologize for being herself.
FEARS | Ironically, one of Desdemona's biggest fears is death itself. She's surrounded herself so closely to the end that the spirits have made her afraid of becoming a lost soul with no one to keep her company. Due to this, another fear of hers is loneliness. Having no one to care about her existence was her reality growing up, but she's terrified that it'll follow her to the grave. She would do anything to keep that from happening.

background

Desdemona was born under a frosty winter evening in the city of angels to a young, pretty and naive Lenore Quill who had left her fiance at the altar. She encountered a lonely looking man in the far corner of the bar who approached her cautiously, seeing her distress. They talked for hours and he eventually offered to take her home, which lead to what she considered the biggest mistake of her life. Time passed and eventually, Desdemona found herself brought into an unhappy family, with a mother who was working far too much to ever be home and a "father", who she much rather would call Douglas, who neglected her because he knew she wasn't his own. It didn't help that she was always known as the weird girl growing up in a small, closed minded suburban neighborhood with many eyes to judge.

Since she was eight, she was known as "the freak who punched the mayor's son", when she really had only did that because he held her hand without her permission. Her reputation only got worse as she continued these stunts, standing up for herself rather than allowing herself to be pushed around and she ignored the scolding that always came her way for it. She endured years of bullying and never made any friends, instead preferring to hide herself away and "talk to herself" so she could be left alone. The only person she could find solitude in was a substitute teacher who would come in every so often and seemed genuinely worried for her life. He claimed that he hailed from a neglectful family as well and offered to talk to her parents, which she immediately turned down his offer.

Eventually, she figured enough was enough and she was ready to take off, but before while she was storming out the door, her teacher blocked the way, standing before her. Her mother became horrified as she recognized him as none other than Desdemona's father, which was a whirlwind of confusion and anger for the girl and her mother's husband. An argument ensued between Lenore and Douglas, her mother becoming increasingly upset at the fact that her husband wanted to send her only child away who she barely got to be with. Desdemona didn't even get a say in the argument, but eventually it was decided that she would be going away, and she would be lying if she said she was upset by the thought of leaving home. However she did offer to contact her mother as often as she could—it was a promise she wasn't sure she was going to keep, but it seemed to satisfy Lenore enough to calm her down. She gathered her things and prepared to leave to the academy, and she hasn't looked back, though her relationship with her mother has significantly improved since she left her home.
