There were many wide-eyed children who grew alongside Harry Potter in the halls of Hogwarts. Not all of them were close friends - some of them weren't friends at all - but all of their lives were impacted by Harry nonetheless. xxx
Cedar is a quiet, clever Gryffindor whose aversion to all things sociable has kept him far out of Harry's wake, even if he does still have to share a common room with the boy and his followers. Alexander is a quiet, private Slytherin who seems an outcast among his own housemates, and has avoided The Boy Who Lived for, well, obvious reasons. xx
Friendships between Gryffindor and Slytherin house are few and far between, but Cedar and Alexander are good at keeping secrets- a vital skill when their secrets become life and death amidst the Carrows' takeover of Hogwarts. xxxx
Also, the name of the one they're destined to love is written on the wrist of every person on Earth. Convenient, eh? xxx

XX Cedar Peverell

Cedar, after watching his brother leave in a fancy magic carriage and his sisters leave on a fancy magic ship, had been thoroughly unimpressed by the incredibly normal train on platform 9 & 3/4.

Now that he's sitting on it, however, he sees the appeal- no seasickness or fear of heights.

He's also been fairly lucky, having found an empty compartment that isn't bracketed by noise on both sides, something he can't say for most of the compartments he'd passed to get here.

The compartment isn't empty, however, presenting Cedar with his first chance to make a friend.

"
Can I join you?" He asks the other boy, a little too casually. He can hear his mother scoffing. "I want to read before we arrive, but everywhere else is far too loud..."

XX Alexander Greengrass

Alexander stared out at the moving countryside allowing his mind to drift away elsewhere. Where everything wasn't so complicated as the world he found himself in now. He had said quiet goodbyes to his parents, no need for showy fairwells. One look at his younger sister ans he knew he would miss her, one look at his 'twin' and he knew he wouldn't hear hide nor hair of her all year. She still hates me I suppose.

His silent thoughts are broken off when the door opens and he can't help but send a glare to the one who disturbs him. A visual unapealing boy he'd never met and quite frankly he doesn't want to talk to. "Can I join you?" He forced himself to scoff at the casual remark and made a half assed gesture to the seat in front of him. "If you must. I would appreciate if you don't initiate casual conversation." And like that his gaze returned out to the window again.

XX Cedar Peverell

The potential friend in question immediately glares at Cedar, which he bears with relative ease. He's always being glared at by his siblings, after all, and their glares hold much more heat.

Then the boy scoffs, and... well, Cedar doesn't really like him.

"
If you must. I would appreciate if you don't initiate casual conversation."

I don't like him.

Cedar hides his disgust with a smile and takes a seat as far away from the other boy as possible. He doesn't introduce himself. He doesn't see the point, considering his cabin-mates introduction.

And I thought I'd be escaping pureblood nonsense by coming here.

Cedar keeps his rather small suitcase close by - less because its contents are precious to him and more because he's too short to get it onto the overhead - and pulls out a book on basic charms he'd stolen from his sister before they'd left. He's glad he doesn't have to hear about it until Christmas.

His African Pygmy owl, Helen, peeks out from the hood of his cloak. She stares out at the boy on the other bench, then shuffles down Cedar's sleeve to nibble at the pages of his book.

Clearly their cabin-mate isn't very interesting.

They ride in strangely comfortable silence for a while. Cedar nudges Helen away every time she goes for the book and she makes depressed noises at him. Scenery rolls by outside the window.

Maybe half an hour into their journey, three upperclassmen tumble loudly into their cabin.

Cedar smiles politely, used to excessive noise through living with three incredibly argumentative older siblings. Two of the boys offer vague introductions and an even more vague question of if they're welcome to sit down or not. Neither Cedar nor the posh boy across from him say yes.

Cedar says nothing at all. The posh boy, however, says a lot.

Alex's teeth grits as he stares out of the window. The loud and needlessly excessive noise of the upperclassman was slowly but surely grating on his nerves. It was typical of Gryffindors to be loud and utterly annoying, however, this was becoming too much too quickly.

Eventually, he had enough and loudly slammed his hand down on the table in front of him.
"I assure you that your presence is not needed nor wanted here. I am sure you remember the nerves of your first day?" He forced his face to show the nerves he was feeling underneath and despite being years older than him the boys quietly started to leave.

It was a matter of knowing which house you were dealing with. His father had been sure, as a 'pureblood', to know all about the houses and the type of people they held.

Knowing his job was done he settled back into the corner next to the window breaking every rule as he brought his feet up onto the seat so he could hug his knees. He was managing to keep a clear head but on the inside, he felt sick. The nerves of what he was about to face starting to creep up.

XX Cedar Peverell

Cedar has the dubious pleasure of watching the-boy-whose-name-he'll-probably-never-learn get slowly more fed up with the upperclassmen, until he explodes on them like a snarling kitten.

"
I assure you that your presence is not needed nor wanted here. I am sure you remember the nerves of your first day?" He says, expression betraying a strange anxiety.

Well, maybe not that strange. Cedar figured most first years students were a little anxious.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that I'm once again the odd one out.

The older boys, somehow intimidated by this angry first year, leave the cabin with nothing more than a few wary glances back at the two of them. Cedar watches it all happen with a frown. Sure, the boys came in loud and uninvited, but does that really justify being so rude to them?

(The quieter, angrier part of Cedar says yes, but he shoves that part deep down within himself.)

Cedar eyes the boy across from him. He doesn't seem quite as posh as he did before, sitting with his knees to his chest, looking sympathetic and much more like someone Cedar's age.

Sympathetic or not, he's still a posh bastard. Cedar tells himself.

Turning his attention back to his book, Cedar continues studying. He ignores the boy across from him. More scenery whips by through the window, drawing them ever closer to Hogwarts.

XX ❋
Since none of his siblings attended Hogwarts, Cedar was completely unprepared for the beauty of it. The lake reflected the school's silhouette and turned a hundred brightly-lit windows into stars in the night sky. Cedar wondered if the school looked as elegant and mystical in the daylight.

When the boats reached shore, he and the other first years were led through winding castle halls and up flights of stairs until they were left standing outside the doors to the Great Hall.

Then they all watched a plucky pureblood insult someone and try to win over Harry Potter.

A sense of awe washed over the crowd, and Cedar found himself wondering what this meant. The Boy Who Lived. How did his existence change their world? And would it be for the better?

Cedar can hear his mother's voice in his head: You've been reading too much poetry.

Professor McGonnagal returns before anything else can happen, and leads the now more anxious group of first years into the Great Hall. Older students' faces follow them as they walk from the door to the dais, and Cedar's previously absent nerves start to tingle under the pressure.

An opening speech. Vague instructions. Names called off a list in Professor McGonnagal's hand.

The different houses roar in victory with each new student added to their numbers. Cedar notices with vague amusement that Gryffindors roar louder than the rest.
How fitting, he thinks.

Cedar learns the name of his cabin-mate from the train.

Alexander Greengrass.

XX Alexander Greengrass

You are a wizard. You are a pureblood, you are a pureblood. A pureblood wouldn't be afraid. These lies pulse through Alex's mind as he forces his face back to the cold mask that had been beaten into him this past year. He feels his heart pulsing in his throat so loud that he can't imagine that this boy sitting across from him can't hear how close he is to breaking.

He manages to keep his cool until they arrive, then there are more impossible things thrown his way. Daphne, of course, has been nowhere to been seen, he wasn't surprised she still didn't like him. Large men, carriages that cart the older students away pulled by monster horses. He tries to point this out, however, people just stare at him strangely.

When he finally sees someone he recognises he has to stand by and watch as some boy with black hair and glasses just rudely brushes the only friendly face aside.

"Alexander Greengrass" . Too soon is his name called and too soon he approaches the scary woman with the , somehow, less scary talking hat. He sits down facing the crowd that's all staring at him

Curious, to bare the pureblood name. Such a soft and loyal nature, Hufflepuff would be proud to house you. He panics then, Mr Greengrass would punish him if he didn't get it. Very well then, so be it. "SLYTHERIN!"

Alexander mind blank walks to his new house, knowing he doesn't belong, knowing he could never belong. "Daphne Greengrass." Compared to him she walks with the grace of the princess she was supposed to be. Sitting down upon the stool one foot tucked under the other and hands resting on her lap. How long had she been taught to sit that way? The hat seems to touch upon her head for just a second when the hat speaks. "SLYTHERIN!" Would it of been anything else?

XX Cedar Peverell xx#027539

Cedar goes through everything he's learned from his parents and siblings about the Greengrasses. He remembers how many children there are, their names, how old the family is. Boring facts.

He watches Alexander Greengrass, a twin and elder sibling, treasured only son, climb the dais.

There's silence for a moment. Then: "Slytherin!"

Figures.

Daphne Greengrass is instantly sorted into Slytherin as well, and the Greengrass twins squeeze in among the other Slytherins at their table. Cedar doesn't think they look much alike.

After the Greengrasses is a frizzy-haired brunette girl who sits upon the stool as if it were a throne and she were a Queen, the Sorting Hat her crown. Cedar wonders if she's a pureblood.

I didn't recognize her name though. Maybe she's just posh.

The posh girl is sorted into Gryffindor. The next is sorted into Hufflepuff. Hufflepuff. Gryffindor. Cedar files away name after name in his memory, recognizing pureblood after pureblood. Many of them, as expected, are sorted into Slytherin, likely due to pressure from their parents.

After all, Cedar's own parents had spoken to him before leaving about how vital it was that he be sorted into Slytherin. It's the most prestigious house, they'd said. You'll make good connections.

They meant business connections, of course. Cedar didn't want to make business connections.

"Cedar Peverell."

So it begins.

Cedar finds himself void of any anxiety, despite his parents' warning. He knows enough about the Sorting Hat to know that there's more to the Hogwarts houses than prestige.

He climbs the steps of the dais and onto the stool. The Sorting Hat is placed atop his head.

A clever one, you are, says the Hat. A watcher. You see much, but you do not tell. Scared to be hated. Brave, but quiet and cunning... many Slytherin traits you have. There, perhaps?

And be stuck with that jerk Greengrass for the next seven years? Yeah, no thank you.

Hmmm, alright. But what else... oh, I see!

"Gryffindor!"

Cedar breathes a minute sigh of relief, more at the decision being made than the actual outcome. The Hat is removed from his head and he slips to the Gryffindor table, which is alive with noise. His arrival is applauded loudly and the other students immediately make space for him to join.

The next name Professor McGonnagal calls is Harry Potter, and the room is instantly silent.

Just like while they'd been waiting, awe captures the crowd, except this time, the crowd is much, much larger. Even the professors seem unable to wrap their heads around the fact of Harry Potter.

The Sorting Hat is placed upon his head. Harry Potter is sorted into Gryffindor.

Well, Cedar thinks, at least this year won't be boring.

XX Alexander Greengrass

The moment Alexander heard his name, Cedar's name. His heart stopped, His gaze drifted down as if he'd be able to see the name on his forearm through his sleeve. Cedar Peverell. His soulmate was a Gryffindor and hated him. Perfect.

These years were going to go fantastically horrible.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alex didn't mean to follow him. Okay well, following someone into a quiet portion of the library may have been following technically but Alex didn't even know why he needed to be so close to the lion. It was an itching urge to be close to the boy, he didn't have to talk just be close to him, watch him, be around him. However, he phrased it the answer was always the same.

Eventually, it became apparent that Cedar at least didn't find the need to avoid them. What was a purpose encounter a few times became silent companionship. It was awkward at first, but as Alex slowly learnt the ways of the magical world he started to understand where he'd gone wrong. So slowly but surely he and the boy who's name was on his wrist spent more and more time alone in silence. Enjoying the company in their solitude.

It was one of these days when Alex did the worst thing in their silent agreement. He spoke.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Alex was stupid. Well, he wasn't but still how could something so simple make him so confused. It was the first week and he already was behind on such a simple subject as herbology? Pushing past a handful of first years with a forced snear he headed over to his usual corner to find Cedar already there. A silent nod of acknowledgement was exchanged but Alex couldn't force his face to be his usual mask. His hair was dishevelled and his books fell to the table in a heap followed by Cedars head hitting the desk. "God kill me now because my mother is going to do it for you."

XX Cedar Peverell xx#027539

Cedar wouldn't have thought that posh asshole Alexander Greengrass would later turn out to not only not be that much of a posh asshole, but the person he's most comfortable sitting next to.

First impressions clearly aren't everything.

The Sorting Hat had been right to call Cedar a watcher. He was always watching other students from the shadows, unnoticed, filing away every hidden thing he saw. Learning the truth of people was interesting as hell, though it often left him more than a little disappointed in others.

Cedar quickly discovered there were an awful lot of liars in the world.

Alexander Greengrass was one of them, but surprisingly, his lies were almost honorable.

After the third time he caught Greengrass tying a panicked first year's shoes in a dark hall, Cedar pretty much abandoned his original opinion of the guy, because clearly he'd missed something.

That didn't make it any less awkward the first time Greengrass sat next to him, though.

They'd sat there in a dark, otherwise empty corner of the library, open books between them like a brick wall. Greengrass didn't ask permission to sit or ask him to leave. Cedar kept reading.

And then, before Cedar had thought too hard about his observations of Alexander Greengrass, it had become an expected thing for them to sit together in the library, reading in peaceful silence. It was comfortable. Cedar felt like he could finally have peace and quiet in stupid Hogwarts.

Cedar kept watching Greengrass, kept reading in the library every day. He never spoke a word.

XX ❋
Cedar sits for far too long a moment without responding to Alexander Greengrass.

They've been sitting together in complete silence nearly every day for... a year? Almost? Never in that one year has Greengrass spoke to him, and Cedar has no desire to initiate a conversation.

But then, out of nowhere, Greengrass flops indelicately onto the table and asks Cedar to kill him.

"
I might do you the favor," Cedar repies coolly, "depends on why your mum's after you."

A calm, calculated answer, on the outside. Internally, Cedar was panicking a little. What kind of response was that? A friendly one, sure. But does he really want to talk to Greengrass? This is his only real quiet time, unless he stays up late to study in the Gryffindor Tower sitting room.

And sure, it'd be rude not to reply, but since when does Cedar Peverell want to make friends?

Since now, apparently.

XX Alexander Greengrass

In the long pause before the surprising response from the Gryffindor Alexander was considering his life and how short it had been. His 'Mother' wasn't the worst of his worries. You'd think after five years he'd be used to being the inside outsider, but the constant masking of his emotions was starting to get to him. Gryffindors hated him because he was a 'Slytherin' same really with Ravenclaws and Hufflepuff... He couldn't go there with why that hurt. Even his own house, the snakes that they were, knew he wasn't who he claimed to be.

"I might do you the favor," Those words, those sweet words. He slowly raised his head from the dropped position he was sulking in The red mark on his forehead stood out against his pale skin and a blank face. Except it wasn't blank. The look of desperation on his face was plain to see so strange on his face.

"She is going to kill me because I suck at herbology. I have a horrid essay from Sprout but my application for a time-turner was denied and given to Granger so instead of studying for it I focused on my medi-witch training. And if I don't do the extra credit I can't do the extra credit for Flitwick and if I don't do that-" He let out a groan and again his forehead hit the desk. "School was easier when it wasn't magical!

"She is going to kill me because I suck at herbology."

Oh. Of course it's something like that.

"I have a horrid essay from Sprout but my application for a time-turner was denied and given to Granger so instead of studying for it I focused on my medi-witch training. And if I don't do the extra credit I can't do the extra credit for Flitwick and if I don't do that-"

Several things about those sentences have Cedar's mind twisting. First, that anyone in this bloody school was qualified for a Time-Turner. He figured something that powerful would be kept far out of reach of students. It doesn't surprise him that Granger got it, though. Of course it'd be her.

Second, that Greengrass was studying as a medi-witch, though he probably should've expected to hear the unexpected. Greengrass has been throwing him for a loop for years now.

And third-

"
School was easier when it wasn't magical!"

What the fuck school did this guy go to before Hogwarts??!!

Cedar's known the eldest Greengrass was adopted since the day they met. Well, even before that, technically. His parents had raised him and his siblings on a steady diet of Pureblood culture, and Alexander Greengrass had not existed before Hogwarts. But Cedar's knowledge ends there.

Outside of his family and Hogwarts, Alexander Greengras... kind of doesn't exist. Which Cedar normally wouldn't give a flying fuck about, but he's really curious about this non-magical school.

Does he just mean etiquette classes? But we were taught a few simple spells, even back then...

As puzzling as the matter is, Cedar files it away in the back of his mind, because it's not a priority. Which isn't to say that solving Greengrass' problems is, but Cedar's in too deep to back out now.

"
The personal choice essay? That's due tomorrow," Cedar says, marking his book and setting it to the side. "How much have you done? And what topic did you choose?"

XX Alexander Greengrass

Alex was ready to die. Prepared for the death that would smother him if he dared get anything less then an O on his essay. It was clear he had no options left. Alex was used to the pressure that had been thrust upon his shoulders, all pure-bloods were, however, with the limited knowledge he had in this world even he had limits.

He didn't expect Cedar to help, of course, he wouldn't. Under the table Alex's fingers curled gently over his forearm; as if the black name branded on his skin would scream out. A reminder of how much his life had changed.

"The personal choice essay? That's due tomorrow- How much have you done? And what topic did you choose?" Again, Alex raised his gaze to peer up at the red saviour in front of him. He forced himself to sit up straight. Casually flicking his wand in the air the red sting of a growing bruise on his forehead started to fade.

"Well, I picked mandrakes and how their healing properties link to Medi-Witch spells." He sighed and pulled out a haistily half-written essay. "But the more I looked into it the more I didn't understand anything about mandrakes. I mean healing spells are easy I'd always been interested in medicine and adding magic was just a big bonus but plants? How does Granger or in fact any mudblood do it? What do people expect for us to just know?"

Mandrakes? Really?

Cedar's a little surprised at Greengrass having chosen such a beginner-level topic for a 5th year essay. Sure, it's an easy topic to write about, but haven't they already written essays on mandrake medicine in previous years? Writing about them again is practically the opposite of impressive.

He has more than one comment on that specifically, but then Greengrass mentions Granger.

"
How does Granger or in fact any mudblood do it?"

Mudblood.

This isn't the first time he's heard a Slytherin refer to Hermione Granger as such, and sadly, he doubts it'll be the last. But as much as Granger annoys the whole of Gryffindor house, she's also the most studious of all of them, and Cedar hates hearing her determination insulted.

Cedar can feel his face heating up, and he grips his book tight. If Greengrass says anything else he might just hit the guy with it. And he does say more. But what he says has Cedar reeling.

Us. He said us. He called himself a mudblood too.

Cedar's thoughts run at a mile a minute while his emotions conflict with each other beneath his not-really-a-mask of pure confusion. His frustration at seeing Granger demeaned is warring with the fact that Greengrass also demeaned himself, and in that context, it's not quite demeaning at all.

Alexander Greengrass is adopted. Cedar knew that- it's not hard for him to believe. It is, however, a little hard for him to believe a Pureblood family would adopt a muggleborn child.

Then again, Alexander Greengrass just lives to contradict everything Cedar knows, doesn't he?

Cedar loosens his grip, takes a deep breath, finally moves his gaze from Greengrass' face- he sees now that he's been staring at him for far longer than should be comfortable for either of them.

"
Well, I think the problem is that you chose possibly the worst topic for a 5th year essay. The mandrake lessons were all in 2nd year and while they are still relevant to the current curriculum, you're going to impress no one with an essay about them, least of all Sprout."

His words are frank and probably a little harsh, but Cedar figures a little harshness can't hurt. After all, muggleborn or not, Greengrass still insulted Granger. Probably. Maybe.

"
I did my essay on Devil's Snare and Flitterbloom. There's no rule against two students picking the same subject, so if you do something similar, I can help with the research."

Why am I helping him? This isn't my problem!

Cedar pauses. Sighs quietly.

I swear, if this is me suddenly wanting social contact, I might just stab myself.
