Adaya was born to a very poor single mother in the slums located in what used to be New York. She had very little from the start and, after her when Adaya was eight, she was left to fend for herself in the streets, relying on the mercy of others and on her own malice to survive. The streets were difficult and Adaya struggled to stay safe; she often found herself being pursued by those seeking to use her beauty and, during one period, to escape rogue Rebellion members that would murder children with the goal that, one day, there wouldn't be any more Gilded candidates so that the system would collapse. She lived in constant fear and exhaustion. Adaya knew that she needed a way out; it wouldn't be long before she took a misstep and fell into the hands of the wrong people. The young girl found what she began to see as the only form of salvation many years later.
While most of the Gilded are directly chosen into the system, a few selected are recruited into the Prodigy Program, an illegal program that selects and prepares youths to become Gilded. At fourteen, Adaya became one of these recruits. She was relocated to one of the locations, given food and clean clothes, and told about the program. Adaya was told of the life she would have if selected to be a Gilded-- a life of abundant food, luxuries, and, most importantly, someone that loved you. To a girl who had known almost nothing, this was both impossible and so possible to imagine.
The program was difficult and, at many times, dangerous. The smallest mistakes could cause elimination from the program and, since only a limited few could pass to the next level, the competition was high. Part of the program being illegal means that it isn't regulated like the Gilded System itself; murder and suicide rates amongst members rang high and it is said that no bodies of the children killed in the program have been found.
When she was eighteen, Adaya was chosen to become a Gilded candidate. She spent the next year in another facility where she underwent the final stages of preparation, undergoing any needed physical modifications and lessons. When she completed the program, Adaya was placed in the pool of preferred candidates-- members of the upper class that helped fund the program and, therefore, had first picks. In reality, this group makes up the most corrupt of the upper class, the ones who dispose of Gilded like used napkins, but to the youth who have been manipulated into thinking that they are their salvation, being chosen first was a dream. Adaya, like the rest, had one week. One day passed-- nothing. Two days passed-- nothing. As her days came to an end, Adaya feared being eliminated. The week passed and she learned that she had not been chosen. Devastated, but not knowing that at least she had survived the worst, Adaya was inserted into the normal pool of Gilded candidates.

The source of such a dramatic change in character was her fundamental need for love; even though her mother could not provide her with economic stability, she gave Adaya love and protection. When her mother passed away, Adaya was left with a large void in her heart that she hoped to fill once she was chosen.
At the end of the day, the layers of anger and aggressiveness were the effects of a ruthless and dangerous world from which she needed protection instead of her nature. It was the result of a scared young girl trying to survive. She would come to use this later on, however, during a round of eliminations when a member in risk tried to attack her. Adaya was able to defend herself at the cost of the other's life. To this day, she still wakes up from nightmares filled with the violence and blood that tainted her past.
Adaya came to shed some of these layers during her last year, when she was no longer in danger of being eliminated and when others are no longer out to get you (or so it seems). It is during this time, in fact, that the program begins to define the personalities of the candidates. She knew that she couldn't be labeled as anything but gentle-- she was tired of having to constantly keep her guard up and didn't want to be chosen for those attributes. Although continues to struggle with the looming shadow of her past, Adaya has become calmer and relaxed, believing that whoever chose wants only the best for her. In her eyes, the Rebellion is a threat to the moment of happiness she has rightfully earned.
