In The Muddy Waters

In The Muddy Waters

In the small town of Mayfern, six youths are about to have their lives changed forever when they receive special powers from a faerie king. With these gifts they are charged with the defense of the realm of the fae, and their own.

1,119 readers have visited In The Muddy Waters since hixxi created it.

Year One - Summer

In Mayfern things have always been a little more … peculiar than most. Strange sounds out over the ocean at night.
Things go missing and turn up in odd locations. Sometimes it snows in July, or you can wear a t-shirt in December.
Some people go as far as to claim to have seen angels in their garden or monsters on their rooftops.

Unbeknownst to most, Mayfern is home to the courts of the Unseelie and the Seelie, located atop sources of magic
that nurture the fae far beyond what the rest of the world can provide them. But they have a problem - having existed
in a delicate balance for many years, they are dying, and both sides have differing opinions on what should be done
about it, leading to heated arguments and sometimes ... even violence.

Aelfric, King of the Seelie Court, chooses six young people to defend him and his realm against the actions of his counterpart.
Imbuing them with the powers of the elements, his hope is that humans can succeed where he has failed and save not
just his people, but their own, for if the Unseelie manage to tip the scales in their favour everyone is in terrible danger.

There’s just one problem.

Aelfric’s Guards do not yet know that they have been chosen.

Follow proper RP etiquette and the RPGateway TOS. This shouldn’t have to be said, but you will
always get that one clown that is like: “bUT YoU NevEr sAId!!!"

Please remember that the gm and the moderators are the beginning and the end of the law. Do not
argue with us about things. If there is something that bothers you, we will hear you out. But do not
downright refuse to do something without giving us a reason and a work around. We will remove you.

We're not as much of a stickler when it comes to this; if you've managed to be accepted into the roleplay,
we are not going to worry about literacy. Just write at least 3 paragraphs per post. At minimum, just
remember that your post should push the roleplay forward in some manner, so don't have your character
just thinking back to whatever everyone else did and have them do nothing at all.

Romance, violence, cursing, acts of heroism, acts of vagrancy, melodrama, and all the fun stuff of the
RPs will be present. Just don’t exceed the rules set in place (i.e. no sex, no intense violence, no
controversial writing, no overly graphic language.) Also, save us the impending eyeroll of instalove.

Keep IC drama out of OOC, and vice versa. We shouldn’t have to say this, but we always manage to get
one or two drama-bombs in our RPs. Along that same vein, don’t be a prick. Don’t bicker needlessly in the
OOC, or anywhere else you may manage to go. If you have a problem, come to us. Our PM Box is always open.

You are required to hang out in the OOC.. You must poke your head in there once every few days. We don’t
really care what you talk about (as long as you aren’t alienating others or ignoring RP related conversations),
but the idea is that we are building this story together, so we need to be at least tolerable to each other.

Please post in a timely manner. We're not asking for an IC post every day, but at least keep the roleplay lively
and alive with AT LEAST a post a week. If not and we notice that you have not been active in the OOC at all,
you do run the VERY SEVERE AND OBVIOUS risk of us killing and dropping your character. As for post layouts,
we absolutely do not care if your layout is not the Sistine Chapel.

We would rather have you tell us if you get bored that you wish to drop this roleplay instead of us having to hunt
you down and then painfully write your character off as dead. Deposit any RP ideas in the OOC and quote the mods.
That would be the best given that we can deliberate on the idea. If you want it to remain a secret, then makes sure
to PM ONLY the creator.

“Ingrates! Whelps! Vagabonds!”
“My queen has a flair for the dramatic, as always.”

The thorns that looped around the Unseelie Throne seemed to pulse and contract in fear of the creature that heavily slumped backwards into them. Rosalba lifted a black, clawed hand and used the tips of her talons to draw thin lines of pressure across her temple. Above her and below, shadowed denizens of her court flit and buzzed with mild curiousity and an undercurrent of bloodlust that had become regular when their regent was angry.

To her left, slinking around the blackness to her side, appeared Blaecleah. His wings cut the air for only half a heartbeat before he settled on one of the thorns and bowed, barely the size of the queen’s palm. She glanced his way briefly.

“Is it true?”
“We confirmed that Aelfric’s attaché has been in contact. It would seem so.”

She hissed and the throbbing cloud of shadowy courtiers, solid black in the darkness, retreated just a little for fear of any misdirected rage. But Rosalba stilled herself rather than lashing out and then, after a few moments of thought, the queen tipped herself forward to stand again. Blaecleah pushed off from the throne, arcing through the air up until he was level with her cheek so that he could talk.

“My queen,” he said, “it will only be three months. We can endure.”

“Of that I have no doubt Blaecleah. Keep your men in constant contact. We will not pull back our efforts - Aelfric cannot be made to think he has won this - but I will not lose fae to his idiocy. As soon as they are awake, observe and report at once. Do I make myself perfectly clear? No more mistakes.”

Blaecleah bowed in mid air.

“Yes your majesty.”

The sign outside of The Needle and Thread Lunchroom had been caught in the rain and smudged all of Minnie’s hard work in proclaiming everyone a happy June. She supposed that she could meander outside and fill in the parts that were missing, but that would have left the establishment without its sole employee for more than a few minutes and Wallace had helped himself to free coffee refills in the past when her back was turned.

The Assembly Hall had the exact same brand of machine as she did for fueling audiences during intervals.

Wallace, however, was quite happily tapping away on his laptop, wedged into his usual corner on his own. Today he was furnished with a green, motheaten beret and Minnie knew from past experience that he only wore that hat when he felt he was really onto something. The next Andrew Lloyd Webber, no doubt. So she opted not to disturb him unless he fancied another drink or a sandwich - tuna and cucumber, as per the norm.

The lunchroom quiet, she turned her face towards the big glass fronts to watch passers-by, of which there were few. It was almost noon on a Wednesday and those that lived in Mayfern these days often commuted out to the city for their office jobs. They were probably doing sushi or Starbucks or whatever it was that people in the city did.

She wouldn’t know.

Aside from Wallace, her only customer was a small, round fellow in a suit whom she had never seen before. Her attempts at conversation had fallen flat immediately, so she had left him alone after bringing him a cinnamon danish and a tea. She had to admit she was curious at first, but he had opened his briefcase and she had caught the words ‘Crystal Games’ printed starkly across the top of a few sheets of blindingly white paperwork which answered more questions than it generated as far as she was concerned.

He had got to writing and signing and Minnie wondered if finally, finally, Amelia had decided to sell the building itself. A shame, all things considered. She really could have used her right now - they all could have.

Old, unbidden memories suddenly flit across the front of Minnie's mind and the woman frowned at herself, pushing them away and forcing herself to concentrate on the dark clouds still lingering on the horizon. The weather had been funny lately, but hadn’t it always been like that?

Rain in June was not uncommon, but the weather prediction online had been all sparkles and big animated sun cartoons. Hence she had replicated them as best she could on her now ruined sandwich board. She hoped it was not a sign of things to come. If so, she might have petitioned God to save them all, but she had long ago accepted that if God existed? He had abandoned Mayfern a long time ago.

“Amelia … please be okay,” Minnie Sullivan said anyway.
