a character in “Indestructible”, as played by AngelBell

Description

Hi.

My Name Is: Karin Fairson

And I Am This Old: 17
I will be posting from this Time Zone: PST (Give in relation to GMT. Example, East Coast Time: GMT-5)
This Is My Power: Shifting Pretty much, I can change what I look like. Weight, height, skin tone, hair and eye color, yada yada yada...sometimes, if I have enough energy, I can shift into an animal.
I Look Like This: I think...pale blonde hair, porcelain pale skin, and blue-green eyes. Slender and curvy, with a heart shaped face. I like wearing dresses mostly, or skirts and flowy shirts.
These Lyrics Relate To Me:
You don't know how it feels
To be outside the crowd
You don't know what it's like
To be left out
And you don't know how it feels
To be your own best friend
On The Outside Looking In

And, just to be fun, here's Something Else About me: I am blind in my left eye.

So begins...

Karin Fairson's Story

Karin stumbled blindly into the kitchen, blinking her eyes rapidly. One was a shocking green, the other blood red. She had been attempting to train this new ability of hers--the giant knot on her head was proof. When one of the staff had seen her practicing unauthorized, he had rushed over and hit her down, ruining her concentration. Her eyes were stuck these colors for the moment, temporarily blind, and her hair was a strange ice-blonde shade. Not the most comfortable of ways to be first thing in the morning. She tried to look around, attempting to make out any sort of shape around her. She could tell there were other people here, but she couldn't exactly see.

The announcement made Karin jump, but a final few blinks set her eyes to right so she could pace down the hall. A tall, handsome but cruel stood there, with a syringe in one hand.

"Hello," he smiled, his voice like rough cut steel, "my name is Tobias, and I'll be your assistant. Would you like a shot?"

"Loaded question," Karin panted, but held her arm out. Pain bled through her veins along with the solution, and she hissed gently, desperate for release. Whatever this stuff was, it hurt almost as bad as her "power."

Down the hall, left, left, right, left, and she was thrust into a conference room with a few other people her age, all in similar clothes; white tees and black slacks. A distant thought rang through her muddled mind, wondering if any of them were as bothered by the clothes as she was. Though she doubted it, since she was the only one she knew who could actually shift her skin. She guessed that was why the heavy, clumsy clothes were bothersome; her skin was rubbed raw recently, from unwanted shifting, and the cloth was in no way soft. First chance she had, she would ask for some sort of outfit that might be able to change and melt with her flesh.

She leaned against a wall, suddenly tired, and felt beads of sweat rolling down her face and neck. Someone around here was very powerful, and it gave her the chills.

Xel slightly grunted and sat down not wanting to make a ruckus, he wanted to cool down he was to angry and irritated, 'Intelligence and Motor skill interference eh? So my ability's are quite even out, I wonder if they have something to counter measure our ability's...' Xel thought and shook his head.

He heard the Mans briefing, 'Hm a mission, Baxter, enhanced biological functions and elector-magnetic ability's, biological-functions?...' Xel thought then information on everything he had read, seen or heard about biological-functions flowed into his head; Xel grunted, Xel's head throbbed as he placed a hand over it 'I guess this is what he meant about intelligence... Zephir's Teleportation and Cryokinesis seems promising, and myself, on top of that we are being tracked with the microphone and earpiece.' Xel thought. Xel's new found knowledge was making his head pound, but he soon overcame it.

"So what are we expected to find in said places?" Xel said still having a bit of a migraine, but his irritation and anger where already going away.

Parachute? No way, not in a million years! But one look at the men told Karin everything; didn't matter, she was going. She looked at the other girl, Lowe, and tried to smile, though she was sure that it looked more like an angry grimace. In a protective habit, she reached up and covered her left eye, feeling a familiar twinge of anger. Why couldn't the shifting fix her blindness? It would make everything so much easier!

When they had tested on her, she had been sure they would toss her out once they learned of her defect. She had nowhere to go, noone to run to, if they threw her out, she would surely die, if they didn't kill her first. But they had kept her, strapped her naked to a table and injected her with fire and acid and ice. The first shift had been the most painful, like stripping her flesh and muscle from her bones. Screaming wasn't enough to relieve the intense pressure inside her skull, thrashing around had done nothing, and no matter how much she begged, nobody helped her.

Xel spoke suddenly, and Karin snapped back to reality. It would be nice to know what they would be up against, what would happen. She tucked a stray strand of blonde behind her ear and nodded in agreement.

"Yeah," she chirped, voice quiet and shy, "what the hell are we supposed to even really look for? If the people have disappeared, why are we looking for them?"

Karin changed into the clothes quickly, taking a small battle knife and slipping it into a sheath she tightened around her thigh. With a quick sprint, she dodged out to the chopper, wrapping her hair around and around into a bun.

"Sorry, sorry, sorry," she whispered, hunkering down embarrassed beside her partner. She didn't want to do this, and these clothes were worse than the previous ones...but she was too terrified to refuse. What if they tortured her again?

(I'm so sorry for the short post, but I just got home, so I'll be more active.)

Xel sat besides his teammates, "If we are this well armed then something's up, I don't think this so called mission might go as smooth, so be on guard, something just doesn't feel right." Xel said. 'Mayor's house... I wonder what might happen there? Lets see its the mayors house there might be a state of the art security system, and mostly likely armed guards... we have the advantage and element of surprise. This should be easy I guess if everything goes right that is.' Xel thought feeling his migraine creeping up again.

Xel was feeling bored and with his boredom came sleepiness, he was getting sleepy, Xel let out a yawn stretching out his arms, "Are we there yet?" he say's rubbing his face.

"Hey." Taylor grinned as her partner darted into the chopper. "I'm Taylor. We haven't been properly introduced. You'd think they would give us a bit more time to get to know each other before making us jump out of a plane, wouldn't you? Here, you might need these." She scooped down and picked up Fairson's parachutes. She tossed them to her as the door slid shut. "The bigger one is your main parachute. Pull that one first. I wonder how the guys are getting-" At that point the helicopter rose into the air. Taylor was unprepared and lost her balance, almost falling on top of Fairson. "Sh- Sorry. I think a greater sense of balance would be of more use to me than empathy, don't you think?"

Before long, there was a voice in her earpiece. "Okay, girls, get ready to jump." Taylor jumped. "That was fast." She pulled on her parachutes and went and stood by the door. The guy who stood there looked unhappy with his duties. "Lowe, you're jumping first. Fairson, you'll be jumping ten second after her." Taylor saluted as the guy slid the door open. The wind was unbelievable. "If I don't make it, tell the boss that he needs to loosen up." She instructed her partner, before jumping out.

One. Two. Three.

Karin couldn't believe she was going to do this.

Four. Five.

She COULDN'T do this.

Six. Seven.

But Taylor had done it...

Eight. Nine.

Oh goodness...

Ten.

She inhaled sharply, and threw herself from the plane, her scream ripped away by the rushing wind. When was she supposed to pull the chute? Now? No, it had to be after Taylor pulled hers...right? She counted to calm herself, and waited as her heart pounded in her chest. She watched Taylor's plummeting form, prepared to pull her chute once the other girl pulled hers.

She had counted to 37 by the time Taylor opened her chute, and Karin gratefully ripped at the chord, gulping in desperate gulps of air as soon as she was safely caught by the air currents. She tried to copy her partner's calm and cool descent, but raised a pale brow when she saw her suddenly tuck into a ball and plummet towards the ground.

"Taylor, what are you d--" she began to call to the other girl, when something burned into her calf, and she hissed at the pain. What the hell could that have been? What WAS it? Something whizzed past her face, then another, and another, obviously targeting whatever had disturbed it: her. She squeaked gently, feeling a gentle heat seeping down her ankle, and glanced at the ground. It was another 500 feet or so, bone-shattering to drop to; but what if she used the backup?

Before she could convince herself otherwise, Karin snatched at the knife strapped to her thigh, and sawed at her parachute ropes, gave up, and hacked at the actual chute itself. One string snapped, then another, and then she was tumbling towards the ground, a wicked freefall. She counted calmly...

One.

You are insane!

Two.

You are going to die!

Three.

Oh God!

She ripped at the backup chord, and it opened thankfully fast, though it was unable to slow her much before she crashed into the ground near Taylor, her neck whipping about wildly. Silence fell as dust and the chute puddled around her, then was broken by a quiet curse.

"F**king shit damn...," she chirped, and pushed herself to her feet, blinking her eyes repeatedly, "What in all the bloody hellish winters was THAT?"

"My leg...got nicked a little," she gestured to the bleeding slice on her leg, and grinned forcefully, "It isn't serious, it just stings a lot." She had to be stupid...stupid but alive. Her plan had WORKED! She was ALIVE!

"So, list of career choices dwindling. Not a spy...not a chimney sweep either though, or a parachuter. Good thing I'm finding out about these things now, hm?" she smiled gently, and turned her head to spit out grimy bits of dirt and debris. "My chute DID open, I nearly died anyway." Her laughter was short and unnatural, and she knelt to study her calf.

No tissue was damaged, no irreversible damage done, just a slight burn and a large cut, obviously the size of a bullet; she was lucky she had only this and some rattled bones to show for being shot at by anti-aircraft gunfire.

After doing as she was told, and wrapping her calf, Karin followed dutifully, her knife held tightly in her palm if needed. She didn't like stairs, didn't like small spaces, didn't like the dark. This was going to be a long, long trip if they didn't get into some open air soon.

She started to hum to herself, a haunting and sorrowful tune, blinking her one good eye uselessly in the slight gloom surrounding the two girls. Karin couldn't help but wonder what this girl was about. How old was she? What did she remember? Did she have a defect like Karin's eye? Maybe they had been friends, but after her accident and her memory loss, she had just adapted the first look she had seen, a pretty girl on the cover of a half-smoldered magazine. Had Karin been a model or something? She didn't know, and wasn't sure if she wanted to.

Something skittered in the darkness next to Karin's face, and she whimpered, pressing herself tightly against the other girl's back. Spiders and creepy-crawlies were a few more things she couldn't stand.

"Kill it, kill it," she whispered uselessly, her hand reaching for the other girl's in a need for comfort. It didn't matter how old she was or who she was with, Karin was still so small and timid at heart.

She watched the man fall with a sickening thump, landing square on the unforgiving ground. She didn't like the man, true-he had beat her any time she moved or screamed while the people tested on her-but he was human too, wasn't he?

"Well, we can't leave him here," she huffed, squeezing past Taylor and hooking her hands beneath his arms, and began to drag him up the stairs and out the door, stashing him around where no one would see him unless they truly looked. She jogged back to Taylor and smiled weakly, shrugging her shoulders.

"If someone sees him behind us, we'll have 'em comin' from both sides"

Xel quickly jumped off and began running to the mayors house, getting there in 6 minutes flat, he investigated there was nobody guarding the entrance "Seems to easy if you ask me." Xel say's then look's around memorizing the landscape, then he quietly moved to the entrance, it was a normal double door "Pretty easy." Xel whispered wit a grin, then with two powerful kicks he breaks the lock off and opens the door.

Xel smiles and carefully goes inside hoping that his team is following behind him .

"i hate computers," Karin grumbled, her fingers flying across the keyboard while she searched for any disappearances. They were bright, and noisy; not that she didn't understand what needed to be done to do certain things on them. She was good with computers, but not as good as Taylor was.

A thought popped into her mind, and she leaned over to another clean computer, opened a search, and typed in her name, slow and smooth. 'K-A-R-I-N F-A-I-R-S-O-N', and hit enter, waiting to see what, if any, info they had on her. A creak made her jump, and swivel her head towards the door, panicked sweat breaking out on her forehead.

"Hey, Lowe, I think there's...someone outside. A lot of someones. More someones than we may be able to handle."

Karin was beginning to panic, pressing herself as far under a desk as she could go, squeezing her eyes shut and trying not to whimper. She was going to die, that much was obvious. Her mission was over before it ever began. She was going to die here, without knowing what her powers could really do. And where had Taylor gone? She could hear her voice, and feel her presence, but she couldn't see her. That made her even more nervous. And a knife was nothing as compared to a gun.

Suddenly, an idea popped into her head. "Taylor," she whispered, "I think I might be able to get out, and get help. Do you want me to do that?" Adrenaline punched through her body, and her hands tingled, ready to transform if she needed it to.

Karin could feel tears threatening to spring into her eyes as she ran, tugged along behind Taylor. She panted, then sprinted forward, determined to escape alive. They skidded out onto the roof, and she released Taylor's hand, mind spinning furiously.

"The guys," she gasped out, "I'll find the guys. They need to know...what happened here!" She stood, face screwed up in a slight fit of pain, as her body began to shake. She had to get to them, had to prove that she was good at something, good for something...how could she get to them? She had to be quick, agile, inconspicuous...maybe...a bird??

Karin had to hurry. The men were advancing towards her now, chuckling, circling her on the ledge. She had nowhere to go, and they knew it. She had to concentrate...focus on the change, the tearing of these stupid clothes, the ripping and rebuilding of tissue, the bones clicking into different places. Bird. Hollow bones, tiny body, wings. Big, beautiful wings, to fly her out and away from here.

Gasps and murmurs met her ears, and she grinned. She'd done it, made a full change into an animal...but when she opened her eyes, she still saw her legs, her hands, her human body. But how could...she had changed! She had felt it! Then something tickled her ear, and she reached up to grab it. It was a feather. A feather...? Then that meant...she flexed her shoulder blades, and huge wings stretched out on either side of her, at least 16 feet in diameter.

"Damn," she grumbled, "well, it'll work." She kicked off the ledge and hurtled to the ground, trying to tuck the wings tight around herself as she fell. The enemies had recovered from the initial shock and began to fire at her from atop the ledge. Just. Great. It took a lot of work for her to push her wings open and catch herself before she hit the ground, but she made due, learning quickly how to lean and bank and rise.

Below her, she saw Taylor running. She smiled, thinking she might actually be on par with her partner now, not a useless lump like before! She made a loud whooping noise, and streaked towards the mansion, a large smile on her face.

Karin fluttered around for a moment, then landed back on the ground, tucking her wings close once her feet touched earth. She wasn't sure how to shape them away yet, so she kept them. Hey, maybe they'd come in handy.

A trap...? What kind of trap could it possibly be? She peered into the mansion, blinking her one good eye until it adjusted to the gloom. She couldn't see the guys, couldn't hear them...which made her terribly, terribly nervous.

"What...what should we do?" she whispered, turning her faith to Taylor. She didn't know what to do with a trap, but...Taylor might.

Where was Taylor. Oh no. No. No! Karin shoved her way inside, sprinting hard down the hall, panting. Something bad was happening, and Taylor hadn't gotten out yet. No, no, no!

She skittered to a halt and shoved her way into the room where she felt Taylor, almost smelt her. Taylor was running towards the door, and the timer behind her, the bomb she had mentioned, was still counting down.

7. 6. 5. 4.

Karin snatched Taylor's arm and threw her on the ground, falling down on top of her and tucking her wings tight around them both. There was a moment, a rare moment of complete and perfect silence, and then...Hell.

All Karin could feel was hurt. Her wings were tattered, hanging limply from her back, blood trickling from everywhere she could feel...but she had done it. She had saved Taylor. After Taylor put her back on the ground, she turned her head and smiled broadly at her partner, her teeth dotted with blood and dust.

Then she remembered the boys and bolted up, snapping her head around and searching for them. What had happened to them? Were they...could they have been...she had to pray that she was wrong.

The barrage of explosions Xel ran through them to the girls, he could take the explosions but so many at a time could've killed him but he ignored the pain as he looked at Taylor and Karin it would be okay if he would die form them, he had gotten close enough to cover them of some explotions. After a few minutes after continuous explosions ended Xel pushed a part of wall off himself, Xel was bloodied, blood ran down his head and and body, and he could feel his consciousness slip away but shook his head "I feel like I might pass out anytime know...." Then he looked down at the two girl " Are you... Okay?" Xel said with a slight pant, then he noticed it a piece of pipe through his stomach, Xel eyes widened then coughed up a lot of blood on his hand and fell on his knees, Xel was already seeing blurry and was sweaty. As blackness overtook his vision Xel vision he couldn't help but to wonder had he saved the two girls? Had his team survived? Karin pushed herself to her feet, tucking her tattered wings in, still unsure of how to will them away, and stumbled to Taylor, helping her support the boy. What was his name...his name...Xel. She had heard it somewhere, Xel. He had a pipe or something stuck through his middle, blood staining his clothes, and he was obviously hurting. She remembered feeling him behind her, he had tried to protect them as the explosions went off. He had been hurt trying to save them. It was her fault, she could just feel it. Tears pooled in her eyes, but she blinked them back, still supporting Xel.

Xel woke up to a very bright plain with red roses all around, "What...?" he said still drowsy, a woman in a green dress greeted Xel, "I remember know... I was here... before the...bombing run..." Xel mumbled, then the image of a plain melted to the ruins of he city, screams, pain, blood and flames haunted his sight as people died right before his eye's; Xel closed his eyes screaming "NOOOO!!!" as he placed his hand over his head in fear, then when he opened his eyes he found himself in the lab being experimented, when they turned him into a so called "hero" Xel was too scared to talk as the scalpel began to get closed and closer to his eye, when it dug in he awoke from his nightmare.

Slowly opening his emotionless eye's he found himself to being carried by the other girls, he could see the pipe stuck to his stomach and taste the blood in his mouth it was horrible. He tried to talk but he could not form any words except for a cough with blood. But Xel was happy he was glad he could at least save them, hat brought slight smile to his face, "Than...k...you...." Xel said.

Xel gave a grunt and walked out of the room not wanting o be with them he might snap again, he grabbed the place where he got stabbed with a pipe still feeling as if the wound was still open, "Hurts... alot." he mumbled, and sat on one of the nearby seat seeing the other two girls just a few row in front of where he sat, he had to properly thank them if it wasn't for them Xel would have died back there...

Karin was biting a towel, trying not to scream as the idiot technicians poked, pulled and twisted her mangled wings, hemming and hawwing with interest. They pulled feathers out, one by painful one, ignoring the blood seeping onto the floor from the huge gashes. Karin, however, could not ignore them. She inhaled sharply, then tried her best to pull the wings back into her body, sweat pouring down her face as she did so. They disappeared into her back eventually, leaving her shaking and crying as the disappointed techs began to clean and heal her gashed and bloody back. She turned her head and saw Xel. Annoyed and hurt as he looked, he was alive, and she sent him a strained smile, whimpering as they shoved a large needle into her flesh and pumped some strange chemical into her bloodstream.

"Hey," she called, trying to seem strong, "it's your turn to drag my body around next time, aye?"
