appearance:
james is told constantly how much he looks like his mother. he stands almost half a foot taller than her, being 6'1", but the difference ends there. compared to his father, he's narrowly built, and has his mother's dark, thick, curly hair which thankfully requires hardly any maintenance. it's a little bit longer than his father would like, but james doesn't have any intentions of cutting it. his skin is paler than his mother, but like her, he tans extremely easily, at only the slightest exposure to light. he has his father's eyes though- narrow, almond-shaped, and a dark brown. his father doesn't particularly approve of tattoos, so james has so far abstained from getting any. on one forearm, there is a long, slightly raised scar. you'd hardly notice it unless you were looking. even still, james wears bracelets and wristbands on that arm to make sure it can't be seen, or else sticks to long sleeves.

personality:
james has become very, very good at hiding his secret. even his own family doesn't know how close he is to breaking point, because james doesn't come across as the type of person to have a nervous breakdown. he's always been very determined and independent. he was always so determined to do everything himself, to be his own hero. on his blog, he comes across as entirely honest about his experiences and outlook. his friends never expect anything, because he comes across as so open, so funny, so honest. and he is all of these things, it's just... he also has to hide a major part of himself. only one or two people know about what he's really going through. and they see a whole different side of him.

they see the man who's barely holding it together. how close he is to panic at any one time, how afraid he is, how much of his life is a pretense. he has nowhere to go to vent, to release his frustrations, and that's destroying him. everything he does has to be so carefully thought out to make sure that his public image holds true. he was smart enough to run his blog under a pseudonym, so he should be able to use that to express himself. but he can't. he's too afraid that somebody will find out that it's him running it, and if he spills his soul on that, he'll be found out. all he wants to do is write. he's passionate about it, and while his passion is what drives him forward at times, it's also tearing him apart.

he's started pushing people away, because he can't bear the thought of letting anyone else down. as a result he can be a little harsh and cold and almost cruel at times. he hates these times because he reminds himself of his father. there are times when he's barely holding it together, when he pretends to be sick because he just can't drag himself out of bed. those he lets in, he holds close because he hates the thought of being abandoned. he can be clingy and manipulative as a result. he doesn't want to let anybody know about the mess he is on the inside.

i think we've all got the dreamer's disease

jack and elizabeth devereaux married young. their parents set them up as a business deal, but luckily for all parties they fell in love at first sight and didn't object. the two families had always been allied. so when things started to take a turn for the worse, they joined with the devereaux clan so that both sides would survive. elizabeth was the youngest daughter who had never had much of a role in the business. in contrast, jack was set up to be the next leader of the gang.

james was much closer to his mother growing up. his father was loving, but he had an idea of what he wanted his son to be, and james didn't fit it. a bookish, quiet son... no, jack had always wanted an athletic, outgoing son, somebody who could help his older brother lead in future years. so jack made his son play baseball, run track, anything to get him to be a little closer to that image of a perfect son. the only thing james really took to was debating. he was outspoken and eloquent when he was on the podium- and yet it didn't spread into his daily life. james stayed quiet, reserved, and a bookworm. he stayed on the teams to keep his father happy. he wasn't terrible, wasn't amazing, didn't hate it, didn't love it. but he went because it was something to do and he actually enjoyed it at times.

the first of the conflicts came when he was sixteen. things had been strained between james and jack for a while. And james made the mistake of telling his father that he isn't straight. his father didn't lay a finger on him, or even remark specifically on his sexuality. but what jack did tell his son was that if he didn't learn to fit the devereaux image, he would be kicked out with no support, no claim to anything. his family would disown him. james got the message. so he tried, he tried harder to be like his father and his older brother. it was at this time he started writing anonymously online, wanting to express himself. he wrote about everything but his family life- and surprisingly, it was popular.

james didn't have the luxury of moving away for college. he just moved across the city. he knew that no matter where he went, there was eyes on him, watching him, making sure he was acting correctly. he stayed playing sports, stayed debating, stayed writing. and he hated his life. the thought of living this life nearly broke him. his father's words had sunken in. he was never going to be good enough, he was never going to be what they wanted. there was only one way he could see out, only one way he could take control of his fate. but even that didn't work. one of his best friends knew something was wrong and found him. they managed to get him to hospital without any of the family finding out, and made him start going to therapy once he got out. he still goes, but it's hard for him to do so without being spotted by someone who works for his family. or, at least, that's what he tells himself. so he misses far more appointments than he should. but he's surviving. the only person in his family who knows about any of this is his brother. he's the only member of his family james really trusts any more.

So begins...

══════════════════════════════════════

Chloe had been here many times, sometimes because of work with her family, others because she wanted to get away for a bit. Most people would recognize her when she walked around her won territory, always treating her different or fearing her. Chloe didn’t mind it, fear was a powerful weapon, helped you get what you needed, or kept people out of your way. But sometimes she just wanted to feel normal, well more normal than the only daughter and eldest child of the Salant family, who owned half, if not more, of Roseville. Right now, she wasn’t in the part of town where people would immediately recognize her, the part of town where she could just to mention her last name, and people would bend at her will. No, she was somewhere else, Devereaux territory.

The Devereaux family gang held just about everything else that the Salant’s didn’t, plus they were always at each other’s throats, always at war. Chloe would come to their territory most of the time to do a job for her mother or father, but right now she just wanted to feel normal. She was wearing casual clothes, dress long enough to cover her tattoo and a knife hidden in her boot, with light make up; red lipstick and black eyeliner. People wouldn’t recognize her as well here, yeah maybe an actual Devereaux family member might, like Ryan, but the usuals wouldn’t, she was just another girl on the streets walking around. Chloe had only seen two members of the actual Devereaux family, the mother behind everything, and the eldest son Ryan. She had only seen the mother during one of the few non violent confrontations between the two families, possible peace talks, but it just ended in both parties yelling and weapons being drawn before it dying down. And met Ryan through a temporally alliance, which ended with her stabbing him and ratting him out.

As Chloe weaved through the crowds on the sidewalk, a man caught her eye β€œFuck…” Chloe whispered to herself, the man that she spotted was a henchmen that she had a run in with during one of her previous β€œadventures” to this side of town, she got away easily, but she was worried he would see her and recognize her. Chloe looked and saw a small coffee shop, and decided to duck into it in the hopes of not being recognized. Why did I have to come into a damn coffee shop, ugh. She thought to herself as she stood in line, she grabbed a tall energy can and a pastry and handed cash to the barista that gave her a weird look for buying an energy drink at a coffee shop. β€œKeep the change.” Chloe said with a light smile after handing them a 20 dollar bill, she scanned the room, there weren’t many seats left, and most of them were facing the window. She spotted one seat where the back was to the door, and from behind was just some guy who looked like he was writing something, Chloe quickly sat across from the boy and opened her energy drink and took a swig, hoping that they wouldn’t come in. Maybe they won’t recognize me, it was dark when I ran into them last time after all…. she thought to herself, then finally looking at the boy across from her.

Black curly medium-long length hair that somehow seemed to glow, deep handsome brown eyes, sharp jaw line, pretty solid built, probably around six feet tall, and much more; he seemed so freaking handsome. Chloe caught herself staring and quickly looked back down and took a sip from her drink before trying to start a conversation. β€œHey, sorry. Weren’t many seats around, hope you don’t mind me sitting with you..” Chloe said with a smile, trying to think of what else to say, but all she could think about was just wanting to say how handsome he was. β€œSo, uh, whatcha writing about?” She continued, little nervous about talking to him, but not really caring about the henchmen she had just tried to avoid, all her focus on this boy. Chloe ran lightly ran her hand through her hair so it wasn’t in her face. Chloe continued listening to him, looking all lovely into his eyes, blushing a little.

xxx"i've never so adored you

James practically lived in this particular coffee shop. Even if it was further within his family's "territory", it didn't tend to be inhabited by his family and their people. Coffee shops weren't their spot, period. That would have been enough for James to spend a considerable amount of time there- but they also served damn good coffee. The staff knew him by name and knew his regular order by heart. He also got the occasional free pastry if they could see he was particularly stressed.

Which he was at that particular moment in time. His family was as bad as ever. There had been some kind of meeting at the house the previous night. James had been invited. He would have been expected to attend had he not had the excuse of an extremely important paper he was working on. Which he was still working on, the following day. He just couldn't wrap his head around it. It was Shakespeare, something he loved and usually was good at. But the stress was getting to him and was completely ruining his thinking process. Even his hazelnut latte wasn't helping his mood. And somewhere, a voice he was desperately trying to drown out was reminding him that if he failed, if he got kicked out of college, he'd be kicked out of the family. He ran his fingers through his hair in frustration.

He looked up as a girl slid into the seat across from him, taking out one headphone and raising an eyebrow. Really, an energy drink in a coffee shop? Those things tasted like shit on a good day. That seemed like sacrilege. She was staring at him now, making anxiety bubble in his stomach. Had she recognised him or something?

Her casual tone didn't think to imply so. He shrugged as she asked him about what he was writing. "An essay for college. And I'm really more attempting to write it, it's... slow going at the minute," he admitted with a grin, subconsciously tugging his sleeves a little further down over his hands. "What brings you here with your... energy drink?" He asked. She was pretty... and a little familiar. He glanced back down at his coffee, unable to sustain the eye contact for quite that long.

As the boy opened his mouth and spoke, he had a warming voice, but Chloe could tell something was bothering him, was it her, or was he just stressed? He talked about how the thing he was writing was for college, some essay. Oh. Cute AND smart, that’s good. Chloe thought to herself, and then hearing him ask a question about her energy drink, she looked down at it and giggled and blushed. β€œUh, seemed like a cool coffee shop, wanted to stop in and see what they had, I kind of forgot I’m not a fan of coffee.” She had to think on the spot, she couldn’t just straight out say the real reason; because she was a Salant in Devereaux territory.

Chloe took a quick glance around the coffee shop, making sure those guys didn’t come in and luckily she hadn’t seen them, after turning around she sighed. Yeah that was smooth, tell him you came in here and you forgot you don’t like coffee, real believable. she thought to herself before talking again. β€œOkay, I like being honest, so sorry. I saw some guy on the street, who I had history with, and didn’t want to have confrontation.” Chloe said, sulking in her seat, trying to sell the whole possible ex-boyfriend story. Plus it was not lying, just not telling the whole truth. β€œAnd I thought if I sat with a good-looking person, I would look less noticeable to him.” Chloe said with a smile, flirting to see what type of reaction she could get out of him.

Chloe leaned a little over to see what he was actually writing about, she had learned how to read different things form various angels, helps with getting information. β€œShakespeare? Really?” Chloe asked, while in high school she loved doing drama, it helped shape the beginning of how well she was able to act when doing assignments with her family. β€œI love Shakespeare. All the varieties he wrote, from tragedies like Romeo and Juliet, comedies like Much Ado, and my personal favorite, Taming of the Shrew.” Chloe relaxed a bit more after finally having some conversation with this cute boy, but hoping she wasn’t being too bothersome.

After finishing her energy drink, Chloe continue to listen to this boys sweet voice. She took off one of her many bracelets and started playing with it to ease her nerves. Yes, Chloe may be relaxed, but she was still nervous being in Devereaux territory, as well as talking to a cute boy. She pulled her jacket sleeve back down, not realizing she accidentally pulled it up while taking off one of her bracelets, hoping he didn't see any of her scars. Some from fights, others from her just being dumb with her knife.

There was something... different about this girl. She lied to him at first about why she was here. He hadn’t fully believed her, so he wasn’t terribly surprised when she admitted the real reason. But before he could say anything more, she made a comment about him being good-looking. He was so shocked that he didn’t even say anything as she leaned over to look at his screen, something that usually would have irritated him a little.

β€œI, uh... Hamlet is my favorite. The eternal question of whether or not Hamlet is truly mad, the question of Gertrude’s motivations, whether or not Claudius is a good king, and whether or not Ophelia’s death was a suicide... I like things that make you think. Leave you wondering,” he said. In reality, he related to Hamlet a hell of a lot more than he was going to ever admit. A depressed prince left in a role he was unable to handle, and eventually going mad? It seemed a little too close to home. James just hoped that his story would have a happier ending.

β€œI’m actually doing my essay on Hamlet. How his character would have been received at the time and how that perception has changed. The second part is okay. But I hate history and I’m struggling to put my thoughts into a coherent sentence that will be acceptable to my professor.” He admitted. β€œI thought coming here for a change in scenery and a good coffee might help, but... it isn’t really.” He shut down the lid of his laptop and shoved it back into his bag. β€œBut maybe a conversation with a pretty girl might?” He remarked with a smirk, returning her compliment from earlier.

”Hamlet is in my top three for sure. I feel so bad for Ophelia, poor gal.” Chloe said in response to the boy talking about Hamlet. Chloe took a lot of her life lessons from books and poetry, they went hand in hand with what her parents taught her. Ophelia basically teaching her not to be too dependent on people, gotta rely on yourself. β€œDoesn’t seem like too hard of a topic to write about? But then again, I never started any college school, family stuff you know.” Chloe had to be careful not to spill any information that could end up with her in trouble, but there were a lot of family businesses around Roseville, so hopefully it wouldn’t be suspicious.

Chloe blushed a little with comment he gave her, yeah she had just complimented her, but it was just reaction from a handsome boy calling her pretty. Plus back over in her territory, males were too intimated by her own name to try in fear of her father, and even if they didn’t know who she was exactly, they weren’t like this boy across from her. No, there was something about this boy, something that just fascinated her.

After finally finishing up playing with her bracelet, Chloe just set it aside instead of putting it on. β€œWell, I actually do know this one pretty girl. I think she would really like you.” Chloe said with a giggle. β€œSo, Mr. Hamlet, what should we talk about?” She said, not knowing his name at the time so just referencing the play he talked about. Chloe set her elbows on the table and put her chin on them, holding her head. In the middle of their conversation Chloe’s ringer on her phone went off, she pulled her phone out and quickly declined the call and placed it face down on the table, not wanting to be pulled back to reality. She had no idea who had just called her, and hope they wouldn’t call again.

He rolled his eyes as she said the topic wasn't too hard to write about. He'd thought that at first, but it was definitely turning out to be harder than expected. Or maybe that was just to do with everything else that was going on in his life. Apparently there was talk of a meeting with the Salants. These things seldom ended well, so stress levels were high. And it had been made perfectly clear to James that he was to attend, regardless of whether or not he wanted to. His absence could be seen as a sign of a fracture within the family, a weakness that could be exploited. And that was not acceptable under any circumstances.

As she asked him what they should talk about, he took a sip of his coffee, giving himself a chance to think. "Tell me about yourself. About what exactly went down with that guy you had history with. Tell me something interesting," he asked. "I like interesting people, and I like interesting stories even more," He remarked. He didn't miss her phone starting to ring, and her knocking it off almost immediately. "You can take that if you want, I don't mind," he said, shrugging a little. His own phone buzzed, and he glanced at it. A text from Ryan. [i]Meeting with the Salants is confirmed. Tomorrow evening. Couldn't get it in a neutral place so we're going to them. Dad says we're going to go armed.[i]

James had to suppress the temptation to grimace at the text, somehow managing to keep his expression neutral. He hated carrying weapons. Sure, he understood why it was probably a good idea, but he hated the feel of a gun on his hip. He wasn't terribly happy about having to go to them either. But he knew he didn't have an option.

Chloe tried to play it cool when he asked about the guy, she knew she would have to word her words carefully, enough to be believable, but not to lie straight out. β€œI’d rather not pick up the phone while I’m focused on something that catches my eye, doesn’t happen often.” Chloe said continuing to flirt. This was great. Yes, she enjoyed the life with her family, but right now she felt actually normal talking to this boy.

β€œFine, if you really want to know about what happened.” Chloe sulked a little, not really wanting to tell the story. β€œCouple of weeks ago I ran into him. Before that we hadn’t seen eachother in awhile, more of my choice than his.” She continued, speaking in a quieter tone, a tone that would hopefully put the correct point across. Chloe pulled her jacket open a little and moved her hair out of the way to show a bruise on her collar bone. β€œHe did this to me before I was able to get away from him, I carry a blade on me now.” Once again, everything she had said was true, just some details missing. β€œSo yeah, that’s that heartwarming story.” Chloe gave with a light sarcastic chuckle as she fixed her jacket and let her hair fall back down.

As she finished the story, Chloe’s phone dinged twice, signaling some text messages came through. She grabbed her phone with a sigh and unlocked it to see what all the commotion about. Next time pick up your phone when I call you Was the first text from her father, she just rolled her eyes and continued. Devereaux want to have a talk tomorrow night. Our territory, the old garage we use to run guns through. But awhile but we will know it better than them. Expect them to bring heat. Chloe locked her phone and slid it back into her pocket. β€œParents right?” she said leaning back in her chair.

Chloe was surprised to have the meeting in their own territory, but it would hopefully prevent them from starting anything, she wondered if her father would make her carry a gun, or just let her have her knives. β€œAnyways, I’m not entirely from this side of town. Have to live a slightly rough life on the other side of Roseville, if you get what I mean.” Chloe paused for a second. β€œSo what is there to do besides get an energy drink at a coffee shop?” Chloe let out with a giggle, she wanted to push the conversation away from herself, so she wouldn’t have the chance to slip up.

As she told her story, James suddenly felt like a massive idiot for asking. It obviously hadn't exactly been pleasant for her, and now he'd gone and put his foot in it. But she didn't seem too bothered by it, which made him feel a little better. He found himself wondering if the man was one of his father's henchmen or otherwise affiliated with the family. His father didn't tend to care about those kinds of things. But it wasn't like James could say anything about it anyway.

He smirked as she made the comment about parents, but inside, he found himself wondering what exactly family drama meant to her. If it was just her father being overprotective or not caring enough. James did this to himself every time anyone mentioned anything about their family. He always found himself comparing their lives and wishing that he wasn't stuck in the life he was. It wasn't healthy and he knew it.

He raised his eyebrows as she mentioned not being from this side of town. She seemed to think it was relatively affluent, which surprised him. Everyone who lived in this city knew of the drama beneath the surface, and many knew the lines marking out particular territories, and where was no man's land. He wondered if she was from their territory, if that was what she meant.

"Honestly, there isn't a whole pile to do around here. The library's pretty nice if you want somewhere quiet to just chill, or get some work done. We have the park, which is fine as long as you keep yourself to yourself and don't look at anyone else too long or too hard. This isn't the most exciting part of town, people are... kinda afraid of it at times," he admitted with a laugh.

Chloe laughed with the boy as he talked about this side of town. She knew exactly what he meant, but she couldn’t just say that straight out to him. β€œWell, you don’t seem to afraid of it. I guess I’ll just have to stay close to you in case I get too scared right? Chloe said with a slight smile and a light blush, as she seemed to trace one of his fingers with her index finger, just being a little playful, also trying to read his reaction.

Usually in this territory, Chloe would have to watch her back, be worried about whats around each corner. But she felt safe right now, truly safe. Plus, a girl talking to a boy is less suspicious than a girl just walking around, people wouldn’t do a double take, they would just assume they were just on a date, or a couple. β€œBut I understand what you mean by people being scared. Fear is motivator for people, some use it as a weapon.” Chloe said trailing off. She knew very what fear does, and how it can be used. It’s how her family keeps people in check, she’s even had to use fear sometimes, and when that doesn’t work, you just have to escalate things.

Chloe’s mind wondered as she thought to back to the text from her father, this whole meeting with the Devereaux. Could they really put differences aside and come up with some sort of treaty? Chloe doubted it, there was already bad blood. Salant suspected Devereaux was responsible for the death of Chloe’s older brother. Plus, when Chloe betrayed Ryan, he definitely hasn’t forgotten or forgiven, but he hasn’t told anyone yet, she was sure of that. Because if he had, the Devereaux would’ve told her father or mother about Chloe betraying them.

A buzz in Chloe’s pocket brought her back to reality, as she pulled out her phone again she saw a message from her mother wondering where she was and wanting her back home ASAP. Needed to plan and get stuff straight before the meeting. β€œUgh my mother is starting to ask questions, I need to head back home.” Chloe said a she stood up. She grabbed a napkin off the table and a pen out from the inside of her jacket and wrote her number on it. β€œCall me sometime?” Chloe said as she leaned in and gave a soft kiss on the boys cheek and stuff the napkin with her number on it into his jacket pocket.

After the kiss, Chloe grabbed her trash and threw it away on her way out, looking back and giving a wink to him as she walked out the door. After she saw she was clear and he didn’t follow her outside, she darted down an alley way and went the fastest route back to her territory, the entire time thinking of the boy she met, hopefully he would call her, or atleast text. Chloe totally forgot about her bracelet she left on the table after she was done fiddling with it. It wasn’t anything expensive, and it wasn’t too special to her, all it said was her first name so she wasn’t too worried about it.

He grinned as she mentioned having to stick closely to him to stay safe. In some ways, it was ideal. In others... maybe not. Her finger started tracing his, and he had to suppress a blush. Play it cool. Play it confident. And then the topic went back to fear, something that he knew all too well. He broke eye contact for the first time, taking a sip of his coffee to cover it. The meeting with the Savants was bubbling at the back of his mind. These things never went well, and he hated the thought of having to be there. And if they were going armed, his family was expecting things to go badly. Were they all even going to make it out of there intact?

And then the girl across from him brought him back down to earth. She had to leave, her own family needed her. He smiled as she wrote her number on a napkin. As she kissed him on the cheek, tucking her number into his pocket, he was momentarily stunned. And then she left, before he could even respond. It was only when she was gone a few minutes that he noticed the bracelet on the table. He picked it up and spun it around. Her name. Chloe. He tucked it into his pocket with the napkin and her number, and found himself oddly cheerful for the rest of the day.

That mood, however, diminished quickly the following day. It was taken up with preparations for the meeting. For the most part, he avoided them, but that didn't do anything for the awful sense of anxiety he was feeling. And there was nothing he could do to get out of it. So when the time came, he dressed exactly as his father had instructed. The perfectly tailored suit. His hair tied back in a low ponytail so he couldn't even hide his face. No bracelets or anything he could fiddle with. They needed to look like a complete unit. And they did, and he hated that. He especially hated the feeling of the loaded gun at his hip.

As they drove to the meeting point, James tried his best to suppress the awful bubbling anxiety at the bottom of his stomach. But there was nothing he could do. He couldn't get out of this situation. Even thinking of his chance encounter the day before had done nothing. He hadn't even worked up the guts to text Chloe.

As Chloe got back to her house, her mother immediately asked where she was and if she got any information. Chloe replied with a shake of her head as she went upstairs. Her family owned an apartment complex, actually rented it out to a few people as a front. Easy place to store items and good to have people come and go. Chloe basically had her own apartment, so she had some freedom. Chloe took off her jacket and laid down on her bed, mind racing. Tomorrow night was a meeting with the Devereaux, but all she could think about was this boy she met at the coffee shop, she hadn’t even got his name or his number, so she just had to wait for him to contact her, if he contacts her, as she was laying down her father knocked once and entered, tossing her a pistol and two magazines. ”You’re carrying tonight, you can bring your knives, but you are carrying. You never know.” Abigail nodded as she caught both of them and laid them out on her dresser and went to sleep after her father left. Tomorrow was going to be a long day.

Chloe followed behind her parents in her own vehicle, she liked traveling separate, gives her freedom to listen to whatever music, and she could do what she wants after the meeting. During the drive Chloe checked her phone numerous times and has been the whole morning while getting the brief and plan for the meeting, but no text or call from the coffee shop boy. She sighed as she slid her phone into her pocket and turned into the garage behind her parents, backing in case things go south.

After Chloe got out of her vehicle the popped the trunk and got ready for the other family to get here. She slid her knives into the sheaths inside of her jacket and tucked the pistol her father gave her in the back of her belt, easy access and not fully shown. She liked wearing sleeveless tops whenever doing jobs, items tend to get caught of stuff less and it showed off some of her scars. Her jeans were a little ripped and dirty, but her family didn’t care too much about what she wore so she wore whatever was comfy. The jeans did have a hole on her thigh, she liked to show off her Salant tattoo so people knew who they were messing with.

As the waited for the Devereaux family to get there, Chloe was getting bored so she started throwing two knives at a time into a wooden pillar, walking and grabbing them, and repeating. She saw some headlights out of the corner of her eye as she retrieved her knives after about the 7th time. The doors opened from the vehicle’s she threw the knives into the pillar a last time, as she was walking back her mother said something to her father. ”Looks like they finally brought the other son, think his name is James” Chloe looked up after getting back to her parents, looking at the Devereaux, being completely shocked at who she saw.

The boy from the coffee shop, he… was a Devereaux? No, no this couldn’t be real. Chloe attempted to keep a straight face, hide her emotion. She put one of her knives away, and kept the other one in her hand, twirling it around her fingers. β€œLet’s get this over with sooner rather than later dad.” Chloe said outloud to her father. Her stomach was in a knot, the boy she fell for, is one of her greatest enemies.

James stopped only to straighten his suit before following his parents and brother into the garage. The whole idea had been to make them all look alike, like a solid unit, and yet James still felt like he stuck out like a sore thumb. Even the Savants had to know that he was the odd one out. No amount of tailored suits would ever make James truly fit. For the first time, he looked up as his parents started the pleasantries. And then his blood ran cold. Because the girl from the coffee shop was standing beside the Savants.

"Enough pleasantries. Shall we get started?" His father asked, his tone already indicating that it wasn't a question. James wasn't listening to the actual discussion. He was having to focus all of his attention on three things. Not freaking out, not staring at Chloe, and trying to quell the increasing wave of panic that was building in his chest.

It suddenly felt like the universe was mocking him personally. A girl he had genuinely liked, who had caught his interest and who had seemed interested in him... and she was from the one family he could definitely not interact with. Not unless it was with a gun at his side and his family surrounding him. He couldn't be a Devereaux. Because Devereaux did not even look at Savants like that. He was truly not one of the family.

And the panic came crashing over him like a wave. "Excuse me," he said, nearly more to his parents than to anyone else, and turned around into the fresh air, stepping outside and out of view. He had to stop himself from sinking the ground, and instead took a deep breath, instinctively going to run his hands through his hair and pulling strands out of the neat ponytail he'd had it in. He couldn't do this. He didn't know what to do but he just couldn't.

Chloe ignored what her parents were saying to the Devereaux, she saw Ryan staring her down, probably not happy with her, and the coffee shop boy, James, wouldn’t even look her in the eye. But she couldn’t blame him, they were born to hate each other, not be interested in each other. Chloe watched as James excused himself from the situation. She wanted to go after him, but she knew it would be suspicious. Chloe was brought back into the situation feeling the vibrate on her phone go off and checked it.β€œGo see what that Devereaux boy is up to, don’t know what they are planning.” Chloe walked back out towards her car after readying the text from her mother. β€œI got to take this, Kent is saying some stuff.” She said to her father. They had code phrases for things, the name Kent meant she would be checking on people. So in this case it was James who had wondered off.

As Chloe got out of sight of the others, she climbed up a ladder and stayed up above to go around the building, trying to see James from above. After a couple seconds she found him adjusting his hair out of the ponytail, she crouched and watched him. His poor beautiful hair is wrapped up. Probably because of that professional looks Devereaux try to give off, like they are better than us. Chloe thought to herself. Chloe stood up and quickly threw a knife to get his attention, it’s blade sticking into a tire about a foot next to him, probably spooking him, but knowing she got his attention.

β€œFirst you don’t call, and then you have the audacity to not even look at me? Is it the scars on my arms? Or my tattoo?” Chloe asked in a fake questioning tone, slightly sarcastic. β€œOr is it you forgot to mention your family basically owned the damn coffee shop!?” Chloe asked rhetorically, raising her voice slightly to get her point across, but not enough for everyone inside to her hear. She climbed down and walked past James and grabbed her knife out of the tire, turning around to face him. β€œBefore you ask, everything I said was true and I meant it. The bruise is from someone I didn’t want to confront, one of YOUR henchmen. And yes, I do like you. I fell head over heels for a damn Devereaux.” Chloe said with a sharp tone as she turned her back to him. She was upset, with herself and James.

Chloe’s mind raced. What was she doing? Why doesn’t she just forget about him, go back to hating his family, and continue living her life as she just was? Her mind told her to just walk away and rejoin her family back inside, but her heart was telling her to stay. Chloe’s hand was shaking a little, she was letting her emotions get the best of her.

James hadn't even been paying attention to his surroundings, so when a knife came flying out of nowhere and stuck in a tyre that was perhaps only a foot away from him, he whirled around, his hand already going for the gun on his hip. He wasn't exactly a good shot, especially in the dark, but the noise would at least draw out the others. And then he heard a familiar voice, one that sent shivers down his spine. And despite himself, he scowled at her comment, shoving the gun back into the holster and folding his arms. He let her talk, watching her as she climbed down. The panic in his chest was still there, held back only by an anger he couldn't quite explain. Was it at her? The universe? Or both?

He didn't even let himself watch her as she brushed past him. He stayed staring at a fixed spot, only looking back at her when she came to stand in front of him again. And as she revealed that the bruise was from a "damn devereaux", he just laughed. "Really? You have the audacity to come looking for trouble on our territory, then say it's our fault you got attacked? If I set a foot in yours without my parents, without being on official business, I'd be killed in a heartbeat. And I don't even have anything to do with it."

He sighed and pulled out the hair tie holding his hair back in frustration. He'd tie it back up before he went back in to face his father. "I didn't ask for this, okay? I didn't even want to be here tonight. If I had my choice, I'd have nothing to do with this. But I don't. I didn't choose to be a part of this. If I had my choice, nobody would care what my surname was, I'd be able to fall for whoever the hell I wanted. I just..." He shrugged. Paused. Forced himself to take a deep breath and look anywhere other than at her. "You shouldn't have even been there in the first place." He wasn't making sense, his mind was a whirl and he really, really wanted to just leave already. But they were deep in Savant territory, which meant he wasn't walking out without his parents by his side.

Chloe scoffed at James. β€œTalking about audacity, I do my job. I go out and do what I have to do to help my family.” Chloe said harshly, sighing. Gosh why was she yelling at him, he was right. It’s not his fault she went into their territory, but it was his family’s fault she had to do the things she β€˜s done. She turned back to see him let his hair done, her mind flashing back to the coffee shop. Chloe was just staring at him again, thinking about if he wasn’t a Devereaux and if she wasn’t a Salant, she looked down at her tattoo on her thigh as different thoughts went through her mind.

Chloe took a step towards him. β€œYou’re right.” She said looking into his eyes, she could tell she was getting to him, see from his body language that he wanted to leave. β€œI shouldn’t have been there. I shouldn’t have feelings for you. And I shouldn’t do this.” She said, another step towards him, now right infront of his face. She raised her left hand and rubbed James and pulled him into her face and gave him a kiss. Chloe’s mind has been racing, but when she kissed James, her mind just went blank.

As Chloe leaned back after kissing James, she realized what she just did and stumbled back, tripping over the tire from earlier. β€œI’m sorry, I-I don’t kn-β€œ Chloe cut herself off as she scrambled to her feet. What did I just do, why did I do that. No, no no no. she thought to herself as she grabbed two knives from inside her jacket, one in each hand. β€œWe can’t do this James! You’re a Devereaux, I’m a Salant. This isn’t fucking Romeo and Juliet.” Chloe yelled at him, backing off but keeping both knives up.

James wasn’t quite sure what to think when Chloe took a step towards him. His mind went blank when she kissed him, and yet he still found himself kissing her back. And then they both stepped back at the same time as the shock of what they had just done hit them. He stood still, still in shock, as she stumbled back. He was only brought back to reality when she pulled a knife on him, and made it sound like it was his fault.

β€œYou were the one who kissed me first!” He said, forcing himself to keep his voice down. They weren’t far enough away to argue about this without being overheard, and that really wasn’t something he wanted. β€œListen to me, we can’t talk about this here. They’ll start to think something is up if we’re both gone for too-” He didn’t get a chance to finish that thought as gunshots rung out from inside the garage. James looked at Chloe for one brief moment, then drew his gun and ran back around to the entrance of the garage. He didn’t know what he was walking into. His whole family could be dead. The amount of gunshots still ringing seemed to indicate that there was still a firefight, so somebody had to be alive.

He hesitated for one moment before entering. He had never been good with a gun and it felt like an idiotic move to walk straight into a situation he was unprepared for. But he couldn’t leave his family to die. And if they lived, they’d never forgive him. Maybe this would convince everyone that he did fit, that he was a Devereaux. So he stepped inside and started firing.

Chloe listened to James, see that he was trying to keep his voice down, but he was interrupted by a sound she was all too familiar with, gun shots. She couldn’t tell who had fired the first shot, but she heard the return fire, both families were still up. Chloe knew she would need to get inside and see what’s going on before its too late, but before she could run off, she saw James draw his gun and head back in the way he came out. She wanted to chase in after him, but knew she couldn’t go with him, it would look suspicious as all hell. β€œIf you get out of this alive, you better fucking text me before I raise hell.” Chloe said towards James before darting off, heading towards a side door.

As Chloe peaked open through a door, she saw both families currently at full capacity, firing at each other. Luckily for her, the Devereaux hadn’t spotted her yet, she had the upper hand on them, plus she had them flanked. Before she knew what she wanted to do, she saw James firing into the mist. He really needs to work on his gun work Chloe thought to herself before quickly throwing a knife towards the mother of the Devereaux, the knife missing her by inches but sticking into the car exterior next to her. After missing Chloe decided to even the odds, a knife wouldn’t do much at this distance, so she pulled out the pistol from her belt but keeping a knife in her off hand.

Right when Chloe stepped out, she heard someone yell out in pain, as she looked she saw that mother was caught by bullet I her shoulder and was down behind a vehicle. When Chloe tracked to see who would’ve shot on her, she saw the culprit, Ryan Devereaux. Chloe looked around the room and saw some propane tanks across the room, away from everyone. Chloe quickly fired at them and a small explosion blew out part of the wall, causing smoke to fill the room, along with some flames that triggered the sprinkler system. β€œGet Mom out of here.” Chloe yelled towards her father and the few muscle they brought as she ran through the room using the smoke as cover.

Chloe tackled Ryan over a vehicle, both of them landing hard and their gun’s sliding across the room and into the fire. β€œI should’ve finished the job instead of letting you go.” Chloe said as she swiped with one of her knives, grazing his arm with it. She knew she couldn’t out fight Ryan, she was smaller and not as strong, but she was just trying to distract him and whoever else, so her mother and father could get out. Ryan punched Chloe in the stomach and pushed her back, her stumbling into the smoke that was quickly filling the room. A support beam fell a few feet to Chloe’s left, she looked around confused. Fuck, that explosion did a little more damage than I thought it would, took out some structure support. Chloe thought to herself, attempting to look through the smoke and crumbling debris.

This had escalated a lot more than James had anticipated. He was missing every shot he took, and there was too many shots being aimed in his direction. He took a few deep breaths, trying to stay as grounded as he could as he hid behind a car. He heard a woman's cry and felt his stomach plummet through the floor. He risked standing up, still using the car as cover, and watched what happened over the next couple of seconds. Something exploded, and James had to do everything in his power to stop himself from dropping to his knees and let the tidal wave of panic crash over him.

But his heart sank as he saw Chloe running towards Ryan and tackling him. They fought for a few moments, before getting to their feet and stumbling back from each other. A beam came crashing down, landing only a few feet from James, and he scrambled away from it, dropping his gun in his panic. He whirled around, wanting to call out to Ryan, to Chloe, but the words stuck in his chest. And then he saw it. A beam, already coming loose. It was going to fall. It was going to fall onto Ryan and Chloe. Or maybe just one. James didn't know what one, but before he had time to dwell on it, he was running and barrelling towards them. And just as he collided with Chloe, his arms reaching out to drag Ryan out of the way, the beam came crashing down. For a moment, he swore he blacked out with the pain. But then he was pinned to the floor by the weight of it, one leg completely trapped by it.

"James!" Ryan yelled, dropping to his knees. "What the fuck were you doing?" He asked, dropping his voice a little.
"Trying to stop you from getting crushed," James snapped.
"You know what I meant," Ryan muttered, but dropped the subject.

Right when Chloe spotted Ryan she felt a body collide with her, shoving her out of a way right before a beam fell down separating her and Ryan, but also the body that had shoved her out of the way, James. Did he just… Chloe thought to herself, piecing together that James had just saved her life. She could see through the smoke that James’ leg was pinned. She wanted to help but Ryan was back up, she wasn’t sure what he would’ve done if she went over there. Chloe’s mind told her to just leave, forget about James and Ryan. But, she couldn’t just leave them here, could she?

Chloe grabbed her pistol off the ground and tucked it back behind her belt, she looked towards the window and saw it could be her way out of here. But Chloe instead went the opposite way, and jumped over the beamed and rolled to a stop, a couple feet next to Ryan. Chloe ignored that Ryan had stood up and faced her as she went and grabbed 4x4 piece of wood that wasn’t burnt or damaged. She slid it under the beam James was under and looked at Ryan, not saying anything. β€œThis doesn’t mean anything Chloe, I’m still going to kill you.” Ryan said to her as he readied himself, Chloe just scoffing "Don't call me that Ryan."

β€œPull!” Chloe shouted, barely able to keep the beam up, after Ryan struggled for a second, he pulled James out right in time before the piece of wood snapped. Chloe stepped back and pulled her knife out. β€œGet the fuck out of my turf.” She told the two boys. She looked at James with soft eyes, basically saying thank you for saving her life. Chloe then ran out the building and texted her family making sure all was okay, getting a text back that they were okay, only a flesh wound to her mother. Chloe ducked in the shadows across the street from the building and out of sight, seeing what the Devereaux would do next.

James couldn't quite believe it when Chloe reappeared. It would have been such an easy way to get out of it all, just leave and pretend she knew nothing. But instead, she and Ryan worked together to get him out. It wasn't the most elegant solution. Ryan had to drag him out in whatever way he could, which wasn't exactly gently, and the beam barely missed his foot when the plank finally snapped. He hadn't missed Ryan's threat towards her either, but let it slide. The two sides weren't feeling particularly amiable to each other right now, and he wasn't going to interfere in that. He held Chloe's eye contact as she told them to get off her turf, wishing he could say something. But then she left.

"Fuck's sake, James, you have too much of a talent for getting yourself into trouble," Ryan muttered. "Pot calling kettle black," James muttered back. "Shut up or I'll make you walk," Ryan said as he pulled James to his feet- or, rather, his one good weight-bearing foot. "Do you want me to carry you?" Ryan yelled over the flames. James knew it would probably be quicker, easier, and safer- but his pride told him no.

"I can manage." They managed to get out of the garage without anything else dramatic happening. His parents were already in the car, the engine going. James knew that if they'd been much longer they probably would have left him there. Whatever about Ryan. Getting into the car was awkward enough, but they managed.

"Christ, what happened to him?" His father asked, the question clearly directed at Ryan. "Pushed me out of the way of a falling beam. I managed to get him back out, but he needs to go to the hospital," Ryan replied. His father went silent. He would never praise James, but the silence said something. "Fine."

The hospital was on neutral territory, and the doctors were very clearly neutral for obvious. But they still knew not to ask too many questions when Ryan helped James hobble in.

Chloe watched as the Devereaux met back up at one of their vehicles, she overheard them talking about needing to take James to the hospital. β€œGosh, why did he have to do that…” Chloe said under her breathe as she pulled out her phone and made a call to the hospital. Even though it was in the neutral zone, she still had some contacts there loyal to her name. β€œHey it’s Chloe. A Devereaux is about to come in for a leg injury. No, I don’t want you do deal with him. Get a room ready, no one fucks with him. I don’t care what you have to do, you will get paid good for this.” Chloe said before handing up the phone and heading back to her car.

Chloe dusted off her jeans and threw her vest in the back seat before taking off down the street, taking the β€œscenic” route back to her apartment. She weaved and sped by other cars, her mind racing to what had happened. She had kissed James, and then he saved her from being crushed by some falling debris. Chloe pounded her fist on her steering wheel. What the fuck Chloe. Kill the Devereaux, don’t fucking fall in love with them she thought to herself, rounding another corner before parking her car in front of the apartment.

β€œUnfortunately, they are all alive. One had an injured leg, another just a cut or two on their arm, heading to the hospital. Is mom okay?” Chloe said as she walked into the main apartment their family used as central operations, they had a doctor made a house call to patch up her mother since it was just a flesh wound. Her father debriefed her of what happened before the gun fire. There was some talk of peace, but somehow Chloe’s older and deceased brother came up, and one of the Devereaux said something that pissed off and triggered her mom, and thus a gun fight happened. Chloe dropped her pistol off and took her knives back to her place, she would probably be up most of the night worrying about James, so she thought she should at least sharpen her knives while up.

A few days later

He'd had a lucky escape, according to the doctor. A relatively simple, straightforward break that hadn't required surgery or anything like that. He just needed to be put in a cast and on crutches for a while, and see how that went. He'd been kept in a private room, which had been nice. He'd had a bit of time to just think and be alone. And it was nice to just have some peace not not have to do anything. But now normality was returning. His family had never been the type to smother their sons with care. Once they were happy enough that he could move around well enough and negotiate stairs and such, he was let go back to college. Which meant a return to freedom. Against his better judgement, he'd sent a text to Chloe. He hadn't said much. "I still have your bracelet. Coffee? and had texted her the location. It was on neutral ground, meaning they were both a little safer.

He was reasonably sure nobody from the family had seen him going to this particular coffee shop on campus, but he'd still picked a secluded spot in the corner that would still let him see everyone coming in and out. He could never fully drop his guard. Even in neutral parts of the city that were free of violence, it didn't mean that they wouldn't be followed or watched. It would just mean that they mightn't attack.

But Ryan had said he'd do his best to try and get James a little more freedom in terms of being watched. He hadn't said anything yet, but James trusted him enough to know that he'd keep it to himself. They'd talk at some point. But they didn't get much of a chance to talk alone without being overheard, and Ryan was always so busy these days. They needed to talk, just the two of them. They'd find time somehow.

Walking up from the basement Chloe felt her phone buzz, pulling out her phone and checked it while she walked up the stairs. At first it was an unknown number, so Chloe was confused on it got her number, she rarely put her number anywhere. But after reading the message about her bracelet and getting coffee, Chloe deduced it was James. Chloe thought about just ignoring the text, pretend she never got it on continue her day, her life. But after a couple minutes she couldn’t help herself and replied. β€œI was wondering where that went. Do they have anything else besides coffee there? Give me 10.” She sent the text and quickly got to her room to change and head out.

On her way out, Chloe checked on her mother, her arm still in a sling, but besides that she was all good. β€œHeading to Neutral. Got to take care of something with a contact down at the campus.” Chloe said as walked out, calling a cab. She would occasionally take cabs around Roseville, it gave her time relax and deal with stuff on the phone, and the cabbies knew she tipped big for their silence and to turn off their tracking system. Plus, it’s not abnormal for cabs to be going by the campus, some students didn’t have vehicles, so it wouldn’t be suspicious for her to go there.

Chloe arrived a little past 10 minutes, she wanted to make sure she wasn’t being followed. As she walked into the coffee shop she took a glance around and didn’t see James at first. Worried it might be a trap, but after standing in line for a little bit and ordering a smoothie, she noticed him in a secluded corner and headed over after she got her order. Chloe sat with her back to the door and the rest of the room, she knew James would keep look out, and it would help with her not being recognized as easily. ”Glad to see you okay James. Hopefully the hospital wasn’t too rough. Oh, and what’s with you and coffee shops?” Chloe said with a light smile as she took a sip of her smoothie.

A million thoughts were going through Chloe’s head right now. The first time she saw him in the other coffee shop, she wasn’t sure it was good luck or bad luck she met and fell for him so quickly. When they kissed a couple days ago before chaos erupted. Chloe started to blush a little bit thinking back to the kiss.

[justify]James smiled despite himself as Chloe showed up with a smoothie. He shrugged as she mentioned about the hospital, and laughed a little as she mentioned the coffee shop. "They're good places to talk. Don't look suspicious, relatively easy to talk without being overheard by people, and nobody pays attention to anyone else." He took a sip out of his coffee. "And it has absolutely nothing to do with my caffeine addiction. Speaking of which, no energy drink today?" He asked, grinning at her. This felt too much like small talk, like the other night hadn't happened, with it's kisses and explosions and gunfire. It felt wrong and yet also strangely right.

"I suppose I better give you this after you coming all this way," he said, sliding the bracelet across to her. "Seems much longer than just a few days since then," he added, readjusting the bracelets on his own arm. He knew that she wouldn't notice the scar from this distance but that didn't stop him from still having that vague worry in the back of his head.

"I guess we also need to talk about... yeah. I think we need to talk. About everything," he said, dropping his voice a little. The bunch of girls in the booth next to them seem much to engrossed in their own conversation to pay any attention to James and Chloe, but it was nearly more out of habit than anything else.

"If it helps, I think my family has more or less come to a consensus that maybe bringing me to meetings isn't the best idea. First one I go to and I end up on crutches, and the building damn near burns down. I'm gonna use it to my advantage though," he said, wanting to at least start the conversation off on a light note.

Chloe giggled with his small comment about her not having an energy drink this time. β€œI mean, I’ve already had two today, thought it might be healthier to go with this, plus I’ll get less weird looks.” Chloe said before James slid her the bracelet she left last time. She didn’t put it on, and instead just fiddled with it. She noticed James readjust his bracelets and jacket sleeve, but just writing it off as being nervous and something to fiddle with, just as she was with the bracelet.

While James was talking, Chloe just sat quietly and listened to him, giving a light nod when he mentioned talking about everything. But what was there to talk about really? They both had feelings for eachother when they shouldn’t. Chloe gave a light smirk mentioning how he’s going to use the last meeting to try to get out of future ones. β€œWell, I’ve been to worse meetings to be honest. I try not to get too involved unless things go south. I personally don’t like gun fights.” Chloe paused for a second, lifting one of her sleeves up real quick to show a few scars. β€œMore of a sharp edge girl” Chloe gave a light chuckle trying to lift the mood, which this was an odd way to do so.

After taking another sip of her smoothie Chloe continued. β€œBut I agree, we do need to figure this out, figure us out. What are we supposed to do? Your family and my family don’t mix in this town.” Chloe looked around the coffee shop for a second. β€œYou sure this place is good? Is there somewhere else we could go. Maybe less public, more private?” Chloe asked, paranoid someone is going to learn about her and James. Which wouldn’t end good for either of them. Chloe knew the Devereaux despised her, especially Ryan. And even though her own family doesn’t personally hate James, they for sure do not like the Devereaux name.
