Violet Whitt

I'm here to meet and study new creatures

0 · 671 views · located in The Island

a character in “Island of Doctor Moreau”, as played by Phil Ein Blank

Description

Name: Violet Whitt
Age: 30
Species: Hybrid of flowering vines
Height: 5’ 10”
Weight: 145#

Appearance: Tall and slender, Shoulder length blond hair (usually in a pony tail) , crystal blue eyes, prefers comfortable, practical clothes, wears round wire frame glasses.

Special Needs: Human: Glasses, without them all she can see is vague, blurry shapes and colors.

Strengths: Smart, Violet always excelled at science and math and can do complex math equations in her head faster than most can with a calculator.
Level Headed, Violet rarely lets her emotions ‘run the show’
Experienced Scientist, Violet is familiar with the purpose and operation of most lab equipment.

Weaknesses: Slow to Act, Violet prefers to have as much information as possible and carefully consider before deciding on a course of action.
Easily Led, Violet has been held ‘prisoner’ before and survived by being passive and cooperative.

Career: Junior Field Scientist, Environmental Sciences, Princeton University.

Weapons: Her wicked sharp Mind

Personality: Calm, friendly and thoughtful most of the time. Loves to engage in Intellectual debate with equals. Prefers intellectual conversations to emotional ones. As she usually keeps her own emotions in check, she expects others to do the same.
Only Three things really ‘get her goat’. Politics, pseudo-science (like “intelligent Design”), and dumb blonde jokes. If you bring one of these up Violet is likely to keep after you until you either admit to being wrong or apologise. Or Violet might pretend you don’t exist for days if necessary.

History: Violet was a bright child from an average upper middle class family. Her excellent grades earned her a partial scholarship that allowed her parents afford a top tier school like Princeton.
After graduating with high honours, Violet went to work for one of her favourite professors. Violet now travels the world cataloguing new species and environmental changes. Her work often puts her in less ‘civilized’ parts of the world. Violet has been held prisoner/hostage/at gun point on multiple occasions. Her level head and remaining cooperative with her captors has seen home safe each time so far.
Violet’s most recent assignment brought her to the Amazon. There she kept hearing rumours of an island with creatures that exist nowhere else. Too curious to pass the opportunity up, she searched for a local guide to bring her to that Island. After a long search she finally found one such person. During the boat trip she shared a couple drinks and nice conversation with the captain. Before long she felt very sleepy and retired to her cabin, only to wake in a strange room with a sore arm.

So begins...

Violet finally stirs, her head pounding like the morning after a long night of drinking. She thinks to herself, 'I didn't drink that much, did I? I only remember having two at dinner with the captain. I wonder what time it is? How long til we arrive?'

Opening her eyes seeing pure white fuzziness, she was beginning to suspect she wasn't on the ship anymore. Violet paused and felt for the telltale rocking motion. Now certain she was no longer on the ship, Violet searched for her glasses. Finding them on the bedside table she dons them and looks around the bland room. "I asked to be awake for our arrival. Not only did that not happen, I've been placed in guest room. Well at least there's food."

While eating Violet notices the sore spot on her arm and finds a small needle mark. Sigh. Forced inoculations are nothing new to her its just nice to be warned.

Turning to the camera, "All this cloak and dagger shit is totally unnecessary. Just bring out what ever nondisclosure paperwork you require. I'll sign them all, no problem. I was promised creatures like nothing I've ever seen before. I'd like to move on to good parts ASAP."

After waiting a minute for a response Violet decides to go seek out her answers. She was always good at ferreting out secrets. Dressed in a mans white shirt and blue jeans,Violet enters the hallway and spots the group by the elevator. Too far away to hear clearly without shouting and they don't look like they work here in any capacity to be of help she decides to approach before speaking.

Just about to ask for directions when the elevator dings it's arrival. Ignoring the other skinny young men Violet moves directly to the young scientist. Picking up his glasses, "You, lab assistant. I'm Dr. Violet Whitt. I was promised creatures I've never seen before. Where are they?" I take the box of beakers and put his glasses back on. "Sorry, I can get impatient when science awaits. Just take me to your bosses so I can sign whatever NDA paperwork they require so, I can get to good part."

"Shit." Connor murmured, squinting down the hall and at the woman who approached him with much purpose.

'You, lab assistant.' Connor scowled at that. After all he was very highly regarded in the lab. It wasn't any sort of hierarchy down there all the scientists did their part. Connor didn't recognize the name she mentioned and took the moment to look around her at the other experiments. The name finally ticked his memory and an apologetic discomfort took place in his expression along with pure bewilderment when she'd taken his supplies.

"I-I need-...." He'd started, adjusting his glasses promptly after she'd placed them on his head.

'Sorry, I can get impatient when science awaits.'

Connor pursed his lips and peered up at her with clear blue eyes an apology in his gaze as he listened to what she had to say. "I'm....I'm sorry I shouldn't even be on this level. I....I don't know what they promised you but I can't let you go to the lower levels. It could lead to an incident.....um...Is he holding a weapon?"

He was looking at Kyle now, a worry line appearing between his brows. He moved to reclaim his supplies. "I-I really need to go."

The wide blue eyes, the small, bespectacled features and trembling lip: Kyle tried to feel angry, but he just couldn't muster the energy. More than anything, he just felt worn-out and confused. There were a lot of people in the hall, some that he didn't recognize. But he did recognize the need for prudence.

After the encounter with this facility's 'security', his desire for rebellion had cooled. He had no illusion that any antiauthoritarian action on his part wouldn't be met with crushing force. Acutely aware of the cameras' scrutiny, he stepped forward with a placating gesture.

"The man's on the wrong level," he said matter-of-factly. "Let him through."

Stooping to assist the man with his dropped burden, he pressed the bundle into his hands with a meaningful glance. "If you like, we'll accompany you to your destination." His tone was forceful, and though he drew up unthreateningly, his meaning was clear. "I'm very anxious to meet our hosts."

He'd never been much for subtlety.

Even the soft sound of the elevators closing was enough to make Crombie jump, he listened to more footsteps and voices, listening to the mere vocalization of the few people that stood in confusion, not the words or the structure, but the sound. The sound in itself was calming. The room was still cold, he had noticed, a breeze arriving from somewhere.

The elevator doors opened again. Somehow he had forgotten about that noise within the short amount of time, so hearing it again close beside him made Crombie scramble to another stance, no longer hanging onto the pure safety of the wall. He staggered, and caught himself, now unsure of his position in the area. The voices were altogether too quiet to hear an echo through the hall. Where he presently stood, though he wasn't sure of it at this time, was behind Kyle and the other, off to their side.

Several new people had arrived, as far as Francis could tell. Another women, and someone from the elevator. Something had fallen, the fluttering of paper falling to the ground. From what he could hear, the man wasn't supposed to be there. The new women interrogated him. Though she spoke in clear, concise phrases, there was ring to her voice that sounded like she didn't totally know what she was getting into.

Connor also glanced up at the cameras, adjusting the pile of supplies in his arms. His eyes fell on Crombie, a slight but very static expression of confusion and panic on his face. He caved, immediately, feeling great concern for the man. "I can't bring you to my bosses. Not only is it against the rules but....I don't even have access to that level....but.....I can request a meeting to see if they can explain things in better detail for you. Um.......c-can you hold these for me for a moment please?"

He offered the supplies to Kyle and went to Crombie with gentle step. He placed a hand lightly on the shoulder like a friend might to a wounded friend. A kind and supportive gesture. "Hello, sir? I'm Connor. I.....I read your file on your condition. Have they not put your walking stick in your living quarters? I apologize for the mistake, it was requested of them. I can see what I can do about finding it for you. Would you like to walk with us or be guided back to your room until we return?"

Varin returned to his normal posture, arms crossed and slightly slinked forward as him trying to hear what they where saying. His brow raised, his thoughts turning from the male who had the weapon to the (at least his two perspective) two doctors. His face showed irritation with a hint of curiosity. Something about this doctor didn't sit right with him, but like everything else on this island, couldn't place it.

"I just want to know where the exit is, if you don't mind. Getting some sun might do my mood some good." He said, looking at everyone in the face brifly before turning to the wall. His face made him look irritated, however the thoughts soon turned to the others in this place. So many walks of life he imagined, but it's still odd that they were just picked up like this.

He turned back to the others, watching them for any sudden movements. He tapped his foot nervously, starting to feel somewhat nauseous. "Damnit....hate these." He muttered as he put his hand to his forehead.

Violet is sorry she didn't notice the young man was blind in her haste. "Sorry, I don't want to get you in trouble. Its just the forced inoculation, waking up in a strange room an all has put me a little off. If this is part of an unusual interview process I must be doing awful."

She carefully places the beakers on floor of the elevator, adjusts her own glasses, and takes half the pile handed to Kyle. While leafing through the papers, "Conner, After you help the blind man to his chosen destination, why don't we take the elevator to the lobby. There the skinny one can get some sun and you, me, and the tall one here can sit down and talk. That sound acceptable to everyone?" Looking around for assent, "Oh, I never did get any of your names. I'm Dr. Violet Whitt but can just call me Violet."
She goes back to leafing through the papers.

Crombie stood still again, almost afraid to move. There was more shuffling and voices, and then a hand was set on his shoulder. Then hand belonged to what seemed to be a very small man. His words were apologetic and concerned. Francis looked in the direction of where he assumed the face of the shorter man was

I can see what I can do about finding it for you. Would you like to walk with us or be guided back to your room until we return?" He sounded nervous, but this only made Crombie wonder if that's how he always was.

The blind man clenched his jaw to keep from shaking. "Thank you," he hesitated, "I...Um, that -- being taken to my room -- would be much appreciated." His eyes fell downward, knowing there was really no point in trying to look at a person when addressing them. It was clear he'd have to get used to referring to that cell as his room.

"Thank you," Crombie said once more, along with a small nod. He exhaled silently as the pushy lady began to speak up at Connor.

Connor nodded towards Violet. "A-alright I suppose."

He was originally going to take his things and set up his station again. He had a lot to catch up on in research notes. They'd done a whole stage in injections without him and it was the first that was the most important. He shook off the thoughts however. This was also a rare opportunity for him to study up close the effects of the injections.

Connor offered his forearm to Crombie, as was custom for guiding the blind as much as he understood it. He put his arm close enough to Crombie's hand that he could feel it. "Here's my arm, I'll guide you."

With that He guided Crombie down the hall towards his room. "I'm sorry for the abruptness of all this, personally I think testing would run better if they took to accepting willing participants. This isn't going to be pleasant for any of you, unfortunately." Connor's frown was almost audible in his tone and it wasn't hard to tell he was genuinely upset about the testing being done on them.

He opened Crombies room door. He then further helped him by walking him to each of the items in his room, the sink, toilet, small desk, small dining table with the slot next to it, and the side table so that he could have a complete map of his own room inside his head. "The hall is safe to wander if you want your room is The fifth from the elevators. Left side facing the elevator, right side with your back to it. The showers are on the other end of the hall. Men's room on the left and it's seventeen doors down on your right coming out of your room. All the signs do have braille if you wish to use it."

Once he was sure Crombie could fare on his own down there he left him at his bed and went to re-join the others.

Varin followed close behind the group, his head aching as he rubbed the left side of the head on the temple. Slight dizziness, he could feel it, but stood his ground. He was fairly used to little things like this, lack of sunlight most of the time and nothing more than a bit of sun bathing wouldn't fix.

Then again, nothing in this place made him feel at ease with life. Not at the moment anyway. "If I may ask, what is everyone's names?" He mused as he followed, his arms crossed in front of him. His curiosity of this bled onto the people here, at least his fellow members of this rag-tag group that he not walked with. At the very least he could get to know them before going back to his normal exclusive ways.

Kyle stood off to one side, watching intently as the scientist, Connor, led Crombie around by the hand. He made no move to interfere. Crombie's condition worried him, and in truth, he did not know how to help the man.

Nagging doubt tugged at his mind. Everything here seemed too surreal, too contrived. It was like something out of a B-list horror movie: the corny plot, his fellow cast of characters--nobody seemed quite... human, more like caricatures than anything. Could it be real? Or was this all some kind of elaborate psychological experiment?

Crombie seemed alright, but there was no telling who might be in on the act. Whatever the case, he was sure that he wouldn't be anyone's fool. He'd play along, biding his time to strike, and then he'd... what, exactly? Escape? Break out? Contact the FBI, the CIA, the FDA? He had to admit that he didn't know exactly how to proceed.

A voice cut through his thoughts. The long-haired man had asked his name.

"Kyle Ruck," he answered duly, "but you can call me confused..."

He straightened up as Connor returned, moving to block the man's exodus.

"Hold up, buddy," he said sternly, resting his pipe-weapon on his shoulder. "You're the closest thing we've got to a bargaining chip at this point. I'm not sure I'm ready just to let you go." He moved to position himself in the nearest camera's line of sight, blocking the shorter man from view. "I'm not going to hold you hostage, but I'm going to ask you to cooperate. Could you turn out your pockets for me, please? Got a phone or anything?"

His hand flexed unconsciously on the shaft of his weapon. If the man was armed, he wanted to know about it sooner rather than later.

"Anybody have any questions for the man?"

"Wait a second. I'm confused now. Why are you threatening Conner, Kyle? What's really going on here?"
Violet begins to realize the situation is not what she thought at all.

"I was told I could see and meet creatures unlike anything I ever seen before. And that's saying something, I've been all over the world studying the evolving interaction between animals and their environment. Conner, what is this place? What's being done here?" Violet doesn't like or fully understand what's going on but her tendency to simply cooperate prevents her from acting beyond asking questions. Violet slumps against the wall beginning to suspect her fuzziness is not just a hangover.

Varin's patience was starting to wear thin. Then again, it was already stretched tightly when he found himself here. "I would like to know how I even got here if the first place. And Kyle, don't be stupid. If the minotaur is something from this place, who knows that they could sick on us for something like this." He said, closing his eyes again in an effort to relive the pain be was feeling. He shook his head, making his shaggy hair shake around like a wet dog before leaning on the wall opposite of them. He yawned slightly, trying to calm himself as he thought about how he would have gotten here from his...perdiciment.

"That and also tell me where the door is to get outside. I'd like to make like a lizard and get some sun." He sighed, knowing if he didn't get some time to himself, someone was gonna die or at the very least find themselves dealing with a very angry man with a penchant for subtle insults.

Connor was startled at the mention of using him as a bargaining chip. Technically a hostage no matter how it was worded. He pulled off the satchel he had been wearing and emptied the pockets of his white lab coat and simple black slacks. He glanced over at Violet then turned back to Kyle. "I'm only a scientist what weapons do you expect me to have? I'm not even supposed to be in direct contact with any of you."

It was only partially the truth. On the first day of his arrival on the island he had an orientation explaining his job description in detail. Thy had a summary on the 'subjects' and though it was all theoretical at the time possible hostile situations where discussed. Since then he kept a can of Mace pepper spray hidden in a hand sewn patch in the fabric of his satchel. It was located near the bottom, under all of his personal items. There was a binder of hand-written chemical equations and theories he was working on that had nothing to do with the experiment. Books on chemistry, biology, and genetics. A picture of him and his older brothers, one of which had him in a playful headlock. They where bigger and appeared much stronger than he was but shared his light hair and vibrant eyes. The oldest one was dressed in a military uniform, symbols of his low rank visible but with a much more mature and stern look to his eyes. There was also a tube of strange liquid. A mixture he'd created himself. It resembled a tiny lava lamp in the way that some of the liquid was of lighter mass than the other and always separated gradually but not without briefly mixing and emitting strange psychedelic colors and faint neon luminescence. It was beautiful and easy to stare at as you swirl the small tube in your fingers. Aside from that there was also a hand full of personal letters addressed to a PO. box in Connor's name. The return address was to a Robert James Talbot.

Connor looked to Violet. "You where misinformed. There are unique creatures here but they're not of nature's design. They're the result of an experiment, an experiment in which you are a part of now. As for the door all you need is to take that elevator over there. You'll find yourself in the lobby."

Crombie pulled his legs onto the bed and held his face in his hands. His eyes still burned faintly, he wondered how long the burning would last, or if it would ever stop. If it was some part or stage to all of this "experimenting." The cool air rolled over the skin on the back of his neck. His palms were clammy, presumably from the stress. Crombie laid back entirely, the sheets had grown cold, and now his whole back side infested with the bitter cold.

His arms fell above his head, running his finger through his hair. The thin metallic air mixed with the smell of food, and he managed to forget about the stinging in his head and the situation at hand. He could almost feel the artificial light on his skin. He could almost imagine it in his mind...

Crombie stared at what he saw, obviously, in his mind. The light seemed so vivid. He sat up, shaking his head. After nearly ten years without sight, he still kept his eyes open as though he could see. Pointless. He repeated, closing his eyes for a brief moment, but he just didn't want to close them. He forced himself back down on the bed, staring blankly at his hands, holding them in front of his face, trying to picture what they looked like, but all he could make out was the dark outlining. Crombie tried to color the image, but he couldn't. He moved his fingers symmetrically, able to make out the movements as well with the same dark outlining, but this was it.

It seemed so...authentic. There was no way -- could he really be seeing his own hands? A ridiculous thought. The memory of his diagnoses flashed through his head. The day Francis was pronounced legally blind. It seemed like his eyes were against him, then. First poor eyesight as a child and from there it was if his they were trying to blind themselves. One disorder after the next. It was a great surprise he managed to live on his own at such a late age.

He rested his arms once more. Don't worry. He told himself.

Crombie was not hungry, if anything he felt sick. He rolled to his side staring towards the wall which had the small desk and chair, the one he'd tripped over. Focusing, he amused himself by trying to picture the furniture too, as he did with his hands. Was he even sure this was the wall with the chair? He stretched to point towards the desk, only to jump when he saw to outlining of his arm faintly through the veil of his vision. Did he really just see himself? Could he see the desk, and the chair, and his hands as he saw Connor?

Don't be silly.

Connor looked to Violet. "You where misinformed. There are unique creatures here but they're not of nature's design. They're the result of an experiment, an experiment in which you are a part of now. As for the door all you need is to take that elevator over there. You'll find yourself in the lobby."

Conner's words hit Violet like a ton of bricks. 'Not of nature's design'? They're creating new species on purpose? How? Genetics, radiation, crossbreeding? 'An experiment in which you are a part of now'? Did 'they' do something to her? If so what? How long had it really been? Was she on the boat yesterday or had it been several days since?

Suddenly feeling claustrophobic and trapped, she 'needs' to get out of here. Get some space and air. Violet smacks the elevator buttons and slumps in the corner of the elevator waiting for it to arrive in the lobby.
