a character in “Kalani Magica”, as played by Magus1108

Description

Judith Lillian Cohen

Basics

Judith Lillian Cohen

Nickname(s)

Her entire family calls her 'Judy', for the most part. Judith also heavily encourages her friends, mainly Margaret, to call her 'Judy' as well.

Age

14

Gender

Female

Sexuality

Lesbian; her parents know, but Judith hasn't quite gotten the courage to tell anyone else. Especially Margaret.

Image

Appearance

Hair

Judith's hair is completely natural. Yes, that means that her hair color is naturally green. Don't think about it too hard.

Eyes

Judith used to wear contacts, but once she became a Puella Magi, her eyesight was pretty much fixed up.

Markings

A Puella Magi marking on the nail of her left middle finger.

Build

Judith is pretty average in build. Maybe a bit below average. Before she was a Puella Magi, Judith wasn't the most physical active person around.

Clothes

Judith loves to wear very frilly and girly clothes. She particularly likes to wear a blouse and skirt combo. Overall she likes to dress prettily.

Accessories

Judith has her Soul Gem always on her, in the shape of an nondescript ring on her right hand. She also has a large bow she always ties up with her hair that she rarely goes without.

Weapons

As a Puella Magi, Judith wields a wicked and fearsome scythe. It can cut through anything, and she can increase its size to the height of a skyscraper.

Skills

Natural Skills

Judith is a fast learner; once she brings her mind to learn a new skill or some such thing, it doesn't take her long to get a good hold over it. She's also rather good at getting a read of other people's moods

Learned Skills

Judith took a crash course in fighting once she became a Puella Magi, as well as how to properly wield and use her scythe in battle. Judith also learned how to surf when she was young.

Weaknesses

Judith can be very emotional at times, which is both a blessing and a curse. Judith is also easy to embarrass, much to her consternation.

Image

Mentality

Quirks

Judith is a very touchy-feely girl, and she gets a little too close for comfort for some people.

Likes

  • Margaret
  • Yuubey
  • Her little sister Ruth
  • Her family in general
  • Being a Puella Magi

Dislikes

  • Stupid boys
  • Dogs
  • Guns
  • Bullying
  • Tests

Fears

Judith has an irrational fear of dogs, for one reason or another. She doesn't really like to be around them. Judith also has an underlying fear of losing her sister Ruth again, so she's very protective of her. And Judith is worried that Margaret might get hurt real badly one day, while out on a Witch hunt.

Personality

Judith is a very bubbly and energetic young girl, with a smile always on her face. She takes great joy out of life, and is always eager to make new friends and meet new people. She loves her life, and she especially loves the people around her.

Personal Life

Significant Relationships

Judith is very close and attached to her family, of course. She loves her parents, and is especially proud of her father, who's an astronaut working on the International Space Station. Judith also adores and loves her little sister Ruth, and thinks the world of her. In fact, it was her original loss of Ruth that ended up making Judith into a Puella Magi.

Judith also has a new best friend, that she acquired after making her Contract: Margaret Faust, a veteran Puella Magi. Judith adores Margaret, and thinks of her as the bestest friend ever, and best sempai she could ever have; in fact, Judith is always trying to do everything she can to please Margaret and make her proud. Judith has lost touch with many of her old friends in the past year, so her new friendship with Margaret really cheered her up and has made her quite happy. Recently, however, Judith's feelings toward Margaret have...grown, in a sense.

Judith isn't quite sure when it happened, but she's fully realized now that she's completely in love with Margaret Faust. She's crushing on her mad, and despite her attempts at hiding her new feelings, she's been quite obvious about her crush. She's taken to staring at Margaret when she thinks she isn't looking, especially when Margaret's in her Puella Magi outfit, she's become even more affectionate and touchy-feely with her, and she's taken to blushing when in Margaret's presence. Judith is a bit scared of her new feelings, but at the same time, she can't help them. Love is love, after all.

Family

Judith has two parents and a little sister. They are, respectively, Jeremiah Cohen, her astronaut father; Mary Cohen, her reporter mother; and Ruth Cohen, her adorable little sister.

History

Judith grew up as a normal girl on Kalani Island, more or less, and she was more than content to live out her days in relative peace. Then...tragedy struck. Her ten year old sister Ruth, alongside many other innocent teachers and students, died during a school shooting. Judith was crushed, of course, and grew into deep despair with the death of her sister. A month passed, and then...her salvation came.

A mysterious entity called Yuubey approached her, and asked her to make a Contract with her; in exchange for becoming a Puella Magi and fighting evil Witches, he would grant her one Wish, whatever it may be.

Judith jumped at the chance, of course, and eagerly agreed to become a Puella Magi, if it meant bringing back her sister. She didn't quite rush into things, however; she knew better than to simply wish Ruth back to life. People already knew she was dead, and would be shocked, to say the least, to see a dead girl among the living again. So, after thinking about it long and hard, Judith came up with her Wish. It was quite simple, and it would save the lives of both her sister, and everyone else who had died that day in the school shooting.

She erased the shooter from existence. And thus, with his absence, her sister was brought back to life.

Judith was overjoyed to have her little sister back, and soon she was back to her old, energetic self. Not long after becoming a Puella Magi, she encountered a fellow Magical Girl named Margaret Faust. The two of them soon stuck up a connection, and Margaret agreed to take Judith under her wing. In the six months that have passed since then, Judith has been Margaret's eager partner, ready and willing to fight against the Witches that plague Kalani Island.

Image

Magical Girl Outfit

Judith's Magical Girl outfit is fairly simplistic. It's a long, flowing, purple cloak that largely encompasses her entire body. It goes fairly well with her whole 'grim reaper' ensemble, to say the least. On another note, Judith used to be entirely naked under that cloak, which she did not know until she checked under the hood, so to speak. Now, however, Judith has added magical underwear underneath her cloak, just so she isn't entirely naked under that thing.

Judith's transformation into her Puella Magi gear is fairly simple as well. She just begins her transformation, and the cloak forms around her body until it's completely there. And, as an additional note, Judith's Soul Gem is embedded into her skin, near the center of her neck, which is thankfully covered up by the collar of her cloak.

Judith

Margaret's words mollified the mortified girl somewhat, and she finally looked up at her friend. Her face was still red from embarrassment, but the color was starting to fade.

"...You're, um, o-okay with me l-liking girls?" Judith asked hesitantly, looking away for a moment. "I mean...it, uh, doesn't bother you, Margie?"

Now that she was thinking a bit more clearly about the matter, that was something the green-haired girl really wanted to know. She'd always wondered how Margaret...felt about, well, girls like her, especially due to her Catholic upbringing and Judith's own crush on the older girl...

M-maybe if Margaret was okay with her...sexuality...they might actually have a chance? Er, if she ever actually got the courage to...confess, that is. Which Judith rather doubted happening anytime soon...

Margaret

"I'm perfectly alright with it; it doesn't bother me a bit." Margaret replied emphatically, or at least, as emphatically as one could say anything with barely a change in tone. To her own ears it sounded more that she was stating it as though it were obvious, rather than making it clear. But Judith was good at reading people's moods, and would hopefully pick up what Margaret meant.

It was true too. While it had not occurred to the veteran Puella Magi that her partner might be gay, she certainly saw nothing against it, and it did make sense in retrospect. And while it was true that the faith that she had been raised on wasn't exactly keen on such things, it technically wasn't forbidden in the case of females, besides, Catholicism, and indeed belief in any benevolent deity, did not mesh well with the world as Margaret had learned it truly was.

Of course, she wasn't exactly going to give that full explanation to Judith even if she did ask. She'd tell her that much, but wouldn't elaborate as to how exactly she'd found out.

Margaret considered asking if they should begin now, both as a genuine question and a way for them to move on to another subject if Judith wanted to, but she ended up deciding against it, as it might be interpreted as Margaret changing the subject, which might in turn imply that it made her uncomfortable. Perhaps she was over-thinking this a bit, but it was important that Judith did not get the wrong impression from her right now.

Judith

Judith visibly relaxed at Margaret's words, giving a relieved sigh. She was very, very glad to hear that; she didn't want her friendship with Margie marred at all by her sexual orientation. And, well...

If Margie was okay with her preferring girls, well...m-maybe...they might have a shot, as a couple?

Heh. Assuming she ever revealed her crush on Margaret to the girl in question, which Judith very much doubted. As much as she loved Margie, the green-haired girl didn't want to potentially ruin their friendship...

"Th-thanks, Margie." Judith eventually replied, giving her best friend a small smile. Regardless of her feelings for Margie, she was really glad to have such an understanding friend. "I really appreciate it."

Margaret

Margaret actually had been thinking about abducting Yuubey at some point during the night, though she probably would have attempted to trap him somewhere for a while rather than stay with him or bring him back to Judith's. She had some temporary success with putting large heavy objects on top of him in the past.

Ironically, she ended up being unable to do so, since she herself was pinned in place sometime during the night when Judith rolled over onto her arm. The irony was not lost on her, but that didn't mean she appreciated it. Margaret couldn't hold the situation against her, but there were more important things that she could be doing than sleeping. None of these things, however, were possible in her current position. So, for the first time in as long as she could remember, the stoic Puella Magi did sleep. Before she did though, she briefly pressed the Grief Seed she had on her up to her partner's Soul Gem, purifying it of whatever corruption it might have acquired since that morning.

As was always the case on the rare occasion that Margaret did sleep, she did not do so soundly, and her dreams were filled with fire and death and exploding glass. All the same, she did rest, and was probably better for it regardless.

Judith

Judith stretched slightly as she stirred into consciousness, blinking as she laid back on the bed. After a moment, she cracked one eye open, and turned her head, checking on Margaret.

The green-haired girl smiled, happy to see her best friend apparently sleeping peacefully. On an impulse, she leaned over and brought her lips to the older girl's cheek, giving her friend a light kiss.

Judith pulled back, giggling slightly. She nestled up closer against Margie, resting her face against her friend's rather long hair, enjoying the nice, warm feelings she got from being so close to her fellow Puella Magi partner. All the while, Judith still didn't quite realize that she was laying on Margaret's arm.

Margaret

Margaret moved with unerring grace through and around the barrage of attacks thrown her way. She hadn't always been able to do so, and she certainly wasn't able to the first time this fight occurred. By now however. while she was not currently cognizant of the fact that she was in a dream, she had grown intimately familiar with how this Witch moved, and was able to dispatch it fairly quickly. Another thing she'd learned since was how to read runes, though the phrases she saw as she glanced around at the now dissolving barrier made her wish she had not.

As usual, her conversation with dream Yuubey was more of a blur, and the dream faded out with relative speed after that. Sometimes there were variations, rarely there was a dream where the whole trio survived, and those were arguably the cruelest. Tonight, however, it had been rather normal, and the dream had proceeded much as the reality had.

The noirette was roused from her sleep by a light touch on her cheek, followed by the realization that her arm was completely numb. Margaret remembered the reason why this was the case, just as her eyes opened, revealing the girl in front of her. A tired, but surprisingly genuine smile spread across Margaret's face. "Ah, good morning Judith. Is Ruth up yet?"

Judith

"Morning, Margie!" Judith beamed, opening her eyes again. She smiled brightly at her friend. "Probably not. Ruth loves to sleep in, whenever she can get the chance."

It was at that moment the green-haired girl realized that part of her body was resting on something that wasn't bedding. Judith blinked, puzzled, before she realized. She quickly rolled to the side, finally freeing Margaret's trapped hand.

"Oh! I'm so sorry Margie! I didn't realize I was sleeping on your arm," the younger Puella Magi apologized, rubbing the back of her head sheepishly.

Margaret

Margaret gave a nod of understanding in reply to Judith's initial answer, shortly after which the green-hared girl finally seemed to realize that she was pinning Margaret's arm, and rolled off of it.

"Oh! I'm so sorry Margie! I didn't realize I was sleeping on your arm." Judith apologized. Margaret attempted to wave the apology off, but found that her arm was not feeling particularly cooperative at the moment, and it merely made an odd twitch and jerk when she tried.

Margaret settled for a shrug, though it ended up slightly lopsided.

With a stretch, Margaret sat up, took her hairband off the nearby end table, and put it in place with her currently working hand. She wasn't terribly concerned about the arm; she was, after all, a Magical Girl. Even if the arm were for whatever reason in a state that would mean permanent paralysis for ordinary people, her regeneration would most likely have her back to normal fairly shortly.

Looking over at her partner, the noirette said, "Alright then, since we're both up now, I propose I make breakfast in return for your hospitality."

Margaret actually did know how to cook. Such skills were almost necessary for one who had the home life she did. Nothing against her mother of course, the poor woman was home as much as she could be, she was just passed out from all the work she'd been doing the majority of the time she was there.

Judith

"Sure!" Judith beamed at her friend, giving her a wide smile. "I'd love that, Margie."

The green-haired girl felt it was more her responsibility to fix breakfast, truth be told, but if Margie wanted to do it, she certainly wouldn't mind. Judith was more than happy to accommodate to her best friend's wishes. Besides, it had been ages since she had tasted Margaret's cooking...

After a moment, Judith clambered off the bed, stretching slightly as she got to her feet. As she stretched, Judith couldn't help but look over at Margie, observing that the older Puella Magi was bent over, rummaging through the bag she'd packed for the sleepover. And with her in such a position, the younger girl couldn't help but peek at her rather...at her....heh....

Judith felt her face flush, tearing her gaze away from her friend's posterior. God, she was such a pervert! And very, very bad at resisting the urge to c-check out Margie whenever the opportunity presented itself...

"Y-you, uh, might want to wait for your...ar-arm to, uh, heal first, before cooking," Judith belatedly suggested, hoping to get her mind off of such perverted thoughts.

Margaret

It didn't take Margaret long to get her clothes out of her bag. Unsurprising, since she had brought little else with her. Having not turned around during this brief period of time however, Margaret failed to notice her friend's gaze.

Judith's comment though, did get Margaret to grin, or at least give the slightly different expression that passed for it in Margaret's case. Either way, it was an expression that few saw, and Judith was the person among those few who saw it the most. "I appreciate the concern Judith, but I've killed Witches with the arm cut off, I'm fairly certain breakfast with it a little numb won't be too problematic." And with that she slipped into the bathroom to get changed.

It was true, even if the Witch thing had only happened one time, and her arm was starting to feel better, or in this case, just starting to feel at all, anyway. The noirette was fairly certain that, by the time she'd finished changing, she'd have regained enough manual dexterity in the appendage that it wouldn't be too much of a hindrance.

Judith

Judith nodded, accepting Margaret's answer as her friend went to change. While she was in the bathroom, Judith changed herself, taking off her pajamas and putting on a new blouse and skirt in quick order. After she changed, it occurred to the green-haired girl that she might have enough time to turn invisible, and try to peek in on Margaret in the bathroom whilst doing so...

Said idea made the younger Puella Magi blush a great deal, and she immediately discounted it, trying to put it out of her mind with good haste. She'd already acted enough of a pervert already, and certainly didn't want to do anything to add onto it! B-besides...god, it'd be so mortifying if Margie happened to catch her...she'd die of embarrassment if that happened, Judith had no doubt about that!

Luckily, her opportunity to spy on Margie seemed to have passed, for the girl in question came back into the room a moment later. Oh, thank goodness...

"I'm ready for breakfast when you are, Margie!" Judith declared, smiling widely at her very best friend.

Margaret

Margaret returned to the bedroom fairly shortly. She had considered heading straight to the kitchen and just starting breakfast right off the bat, but it occurred to her that Judith might be waiting for her to retrieve her first. Why, Margaret did not know, it was Judith's house after all, but it seemed like something that social convention might dictate, probably did.

But that wasn't the point, nor was that the entirety or even the majority of the reason she did. If Margaret had decided to examine it, she might have realized that it was because she wanted Judith's company while she made breakfast.

Regardless of how aware she was of this, the noirette briefly re-entered the room to retrieve her friend. "Alright then. What shall we have? I can, as I'm sure you'll recall, make just about anything so long as we've the ingredients on hand, and perhaps a recipe for anything especially complicated." She had gone to count off the various things she could cook for breakfast, but then decided to just simplify. Even so her arm and hand still raised into the proper position. Oh, good. So that was back.

"Alright then. What shall we have? I can, as I'm sure you'll recall, make just about anything so long as we've the ingredients on hand, and perhaps a recipe for anything especially complicated."

Judith considered her friend's query, wondering what they should have for breakfast. "Hmm...maybe pancakes, if that's all right with you, Margie?"

The more she thought about it, Judith did like the idea of eating pancakes for breakfast. Margaret's food, in general, was enjoyable to taste, and she did recall that the older Puella Magi could make some pretty good pancakes. She was fairly sure Ruth would enjoy having that for breakfast too; her little sister rather enjoyed eating that for breakfast. Heck, she was fairly sure Ruth would eat that for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, if she could do that...

"I'm sure Ruth wouldn't mind pancakes either," Judith added absently, smiling gently. "She usually doesn't like to wake up on the weekends until noon, at least, but I'm sure she'll get up early if it means eating pancakes."

"Pancakes it is then." Margaret said, making her way towards the kitchen. Perhaps it was a bit of an assumption, something that Margaret usually was rather adamant about not making, but she sort of figured that Judith would follow her.

Her hands kept curling, attempting to tighten her grip on a creature that was not currently in her hand. It was a force of habit really. While she preferred not to bring Yuubey here, especially not overnight when Ruth was home, it was still rare that she didn't have it within her reach, and even rarer that she did not have it and wasn't pursuing it.

This wasn't exactly for no reason. Exactly two girls had made a contract with the Incubator on Kalani Island after her, excluding Judith, and neither one had had a very pleasant end to their invariably short career.

But that was not relevant right now, at least in that she could do nothing about it, and dwelling on it would serve no purpose aside from distracting her from what was supposed to be downtime. Well, while Margaret and relaxing were no longer on speaking terms, she could at least turn her mind to things that were present and addressable. Not the pancakes that she was gathering the ingredients for, she was in the kitchen now, collecting things from the cabinets where she knew them to be, that was too simple, and wouldn't hold her attention for long enough.

Judith, perhaps.

Arranging the things on the counter and turning the dial on the stove, Margaret spoke. She wasn't speaking very loudly, and she wasn't yet entirely certain that Judith was still behind her, but it was irresponsible to take one's eyes off an open flame that one was using to cook. "So then, Judith, is there anything you'd like to do today?"

Judith

Judith followed Margaret to the kitchen eagerly, happy to accompany her friend as she fixed them breakfast. The green-haired girl kept back as her friend set out to work, idly watching as she started to prepare the food.

"So then, Judith, is there anything you'd like to do today?"

The younger Puella Magi blinked, startled slightly at the dark-haired girl's sudden and unexpected query. Judith thought for a good minute, weighing her options, before replying,

"Hm, maybe we could go see a movie, Margie? That might be fun! And then maybe we could go out for lunch afterwards. How does that sound to you?"

"Yes, that sounds fun." Margaret replied, her hands moving automatically as she continued to prepare their meal, surgeon's hands, her mother had called them. She had actually once considered that as a possible career option in the future, though the fact that she probably wasn't going to live that long meant that she no longer did.

Of course, again, that was not currently relevant. Geez, thinking on it, which of course was precisely what she'd been trying not to do, it occurred to Margaret that she'd become an extremely morbid person.

"Also, if you'll have time later, with homework and all, I'd like to see about taking those two from yesterday out with us this evening. The smaller one didn't seem to fully grasp the reality of it, and I don't want her doing anything rash." Margaret deliberately avoided the use of the word 'hunting'. They were, after all in Judith's home, and she didn't want to risk the possibility of Ruth overhearing.

As for the idea itself, it was, simply put, a blatant attempt to scare Chiyo out of her initial delight, and reaffirm Aolani's misgivings. Cruel? Perhaps, but kinder than the possible alternatives. Of course, this wasn't how she'd present the idea to Judith, but that was the purpose.

"That sounds good to me, Margie!" Judith beamed, giving her friend a cheery smile. "It'll be nice to see Aolani and Chiyo again. Sounds like a good plan to me!"

And it truly did! Judith was very hopeful about making friends with the two potential Puella Magi, and spending more time with them would help in that goal. It'd also be a good idea to show them more about their duties as a Puella Magi, too; that way, the other girls would have a good idea of what they might be getting into, should they decide to become Magical Girls like them.

Which, if Judith were honest, she hoped they would. The idea of having two more partners around pleased her quite a bit; it'd be very, very nice to have more Puella Magi on Kalani to help them keep the Witch population down. And with more Magical Girls around, it'd be easier to mop up Witches too, which meant that they could have more free time too!

Judith quite liked the thought of that.

"Alright then," Margaret replied, "we should give them a call sometime this morning to make sure they can make it." But what if only one of them could come along? Arguably that might be easier, convincing one person instead of two, but which would be the better theoretical 'one'?

Never mind that. No use weighing situations one cannot choose between against one-another. What might be better to consider would be the possible ways to scare the two off from becoming Puella Magi.

"Yours are done, by the way." she added, handing Judith a plate with her just-finished pancakes, while pouring the batter for the next batch. That was the only unfortunate thing about making pancakes this way in particular; you could only make one per pan, and only use one pan per burner. Margaret didn't mind though, it made for more time to talk.

"That sounds like a good idea. And thanks, Margie!" Judith cheerily replied, taking her plate. She put it aside for the moment, willing to wait for Margie to fix her own first before eating.

A few seconds later, Ruth stumbled into the room, blinking blearily at her older sister. The younger girl had clearly just woken up, given the fact she was still in her pajamas, and her hair stuck out wildly.

"Good morning Ruth!" the green-haired Puella Magi greeted, smiling brightly at her little sister. She was surprised Ruth was up this early...but if she knew her sister, there was only one reason for that.

"I smell pancakes." Ruth bluntly stated, confirming Judith's suspicions.

"Margie will fix you some in just a minute, Ruth. You can wait in the dining room in the meanwhile," the older girl replied.

Mollified by that, Ruth gave a brisk nod and shambled out of the kitchen. After a moment, Judith burst into giggles.

"She's so cute when she's grumpy in the mornings," she commented, smiling widely.

The black-haired Puella Magi nodded at her underclassman's remark, with a little grin of her own. "Indeed, Hers should be done momentarily, so there's no need to worry on that count." There wasn't really anything Margaret could do to speed the process along, but her statement was true enough. "In the meantime, I meant to ask, how has school been for you lately?"

That was a normal question, right? That's what normal friends discussed in place of battlefield tactics and most fruitful hunting grounds. At least, Margaret was pretty sure it was. Mind you, the two were not exactly normal friends, having to fight eldritch monsters to avoid becoming them, but even Margaret knew that friends needed to be able to talk about more than just combat, and she wanted very much to be a good friend to Judith... even if it was sometimes hard to remember exactly how to go about it.

Yes, it had occurred to Margaret that she might be acting a bit too distantly as of late, not physically or socially, but perhaps a little emotionally. Well, that needed to be amended as best and as quickly as possible.

Having finished making Ruth's share of the pancakes and flipping the onto a plate, Margaret turned to her best friend and Puella Magi apprentice-of-sorts. "There we are, hers are done. I'll just finish mine and put everything back and the I'll join you."
