If you were to describe Ashton with only one word it would be peculiar. He tends to keep to himself. He is reticent but always wears a smile and when approached he is extremely polite.
Considering the facts that he spends most of his time reading or doing other non-social activities he should be considered mysterious, but he most certainly isn't. The magic of mystery is quickly broken by what can only be considered weirdness. Ashton does quite a lot of odd things like always carrying an umbrella in case it rains, with London’s quickly changing weather it seems reasonable but the odd part is that he likes to stand in the rain. He simply settles under the umbrella, safe from rain and stands there for hours, no matter how cold or heavy the rain is. Another thing that makes him stand out (except for his unusual white hair) is the fact he is almost always accompanied by a cat, his parents managed to convince the principal to bend the no pets allowed rule.
His grades are average and he is most certainly not the next Einstein but he makes up for it with his resourcefulness and quick thinking. He learned not to trust people easily and question everyone everything, so he does, but his unintentional polite charm and innocent looks make other people trust him easily,
His grandmother taught him to always be grateful so he never complains. Still there is one thing that he can’t stand and that it loud and overly dramatic people who have to make a scene out of every little thing. It is in those cases he forgets all of his social anxieties as well as manners and snaps. The tantrums are rare but they can happen out of nowhere.
For the most Ashton is reserved but not stuck-up young man who should not be tempered with if he didn't have his afternoon nap.

Ashton was born on a Saturday morning in early spring. He is the only child of Claire and Oliver Brooks. Since a very young age he lived with his grandmother in a small town south from London while his parents lived in the city itself. His parents rarely had time for him since they were, and still are, successful business people, The only time they spent together was on Christmas or other holidays. They always tried to make up for it by giving him extraordinary presents, but no present could make up time they should have spent with Ashton.
Living in a secluded area he never had real company, the only "friends" he had were his grandma’s cats. He was a very timid child, never venturing outside grandma’s garden or even trying to make friends with local children, mostly because they were all older and he was afraid of rejection. It used to be his greatest fear since he was too young to understand and thought his parents rejected him too.
It didn’t go well when he started school, he became even shyer and spoke only when spoken to. He was 12 when his grandmother died. He moved back to London and started attending a private school. He spent most of his time home alone.
It was a year later that Ashton decided to make a change, to stop living in his closed world and try to fit in. Ashton was suddenly a little ray of sunshine, he started making lots of friends and was always in the centre of attention. The change was obvious even to his parents who praised his new social life, so he didn't have the heart to tell them that wasn't the real him. Every time he went out to a party just because he was expected to, he felt uncomfortable and sad that the only time everyone like him was when he was pretending. Underneath the fake smiles he was still an introvert who just happened to have a lot of fake friends.
He had, and still does, one true best friend, if she can be called that. The only one with who he feel completely comfortable around, the one who he shared his secrets with and could be sure she'll never tell them, his cat, Nya.
He once had a near death experience (It wasn't but he just calls it that.) While on a school trip to Blackpool Sands he was pushed into the sea and almost drowned, the water was only waist deep and he could have just stood up but the experience was still traumatizing. He often says he and Nya must be somehow related, her fur and his hair are the same colour and they are both terrified of water.
Although he has almost no interest in crime or anything that’s connected to violence, on the urging of his parents Ashton enrolled in the Sherlockian academy. He ended up liking the school quite a lot since everyone there was a bit odd and in his own way he fits in just right.

So begins...

Typical, boring, predictable. It seemed every hour was the same. The same routine being played out daily. That was until the recent announcement of the missing principle. Maybe things were actually getting interesting at last.

Anna let out a sigh as she stood quietly among a small group of other students in front of the academy. Well, I say among but really she was more off the the side. She'd arrived to school quite early that day, or really that was something she did everyday. Anna was many things, but never late. And never absent.

In all honesty, the black-haired girl was actually a little excited for today. Only a little bit of course. There was no way something as trivial as the news of some transfers could cure her constant feeling of boredom. Maybe she felt a little excited, but surely not for that reason. Her sliver of excitement was merely the result in the new mystery that has enveloped her school. This was no ordinary case, after all. If there were any students at the school who couldn't comprehend that then they really had no right to be here. As for having to be partnered with an assistant...well Anna would have to get back to that frustrating topic in due time.

"Anna, heeey!"

Anna narrowed her eyes slightly at Nick as he approached her with a seemingly friendly greeting and that incredibly annoying smile of his.

"What's sup? You trying to get onto the case too? Sucks for you! With me and a partner, I could beat this case faster than you could say Ouch~!"

She crossed her arms over her chest and turned so she wasn't completely facing him.
"I'm not trying to get onto anything. There's no need for me to try. And I understand your lack in self-esteem makes you feel the need to try and prove yourself, but do you mind putting your urge to compete with me aside and shutting up for once?"

Pausing a moment to adjust her balance, Anna shifted her weight to her left leg before lifting her arms and gently running her fingers through her raven hair. With a swift movement she flipped the black strands away from her neck, the locks softly settling around her shoulders, and then crossed her arms over her chest once more. She glanced at her fellow student for a second, her expression dull, before moving her eyes in the opposite direction, not really looking at anything in particular.

"I only hope this Ashton boy that I'm to be partnered with isn't as irritating as you are."

Image"No, Nya stop it." Ashton sighed for the at least tenth time. He was trying to get ready but his cat was very persistent in the attempt to eat his tie. Today was the day now students arrive and he wanted to get to the school gates a bit early but that wasn't likely if Nya kept slobbering over every single tie he pulled out of the drawer.

He took out a dark blue tie and and put it on the top of the dresser where Nya couldn't reach it. Ashton proceeded to button up his shirt when he noticed that the light in the bathroom was still on. He turned it off and heard a breaking sound, when he looked back at the rest of his room there was a sight to see.

Nya had somehow managed to climb up the curtains and jump onto the dresser, knocking down a lamp and was just about to reach his tie when he snatched it away. "I can't take you." He said compassionately scratched the cats head. I'm meeting the detective I'm paired up with today, I have to make a good impression. The cat purred as Ashton continued to pet her. "And we both know you'll just end up trying to eat her hair. He picked Nya up and put her on the bed. After arranging his tie and another glance to the mirror he was out the door.

I wasn't that late after all and he got to the school gates relatively early, it was only 7:15. He settled for a place a bit off from the crowd. He leaned onto the wall a few meters or so away from the gates and started inspecting the students that were slowly gathering. He wasn't all that interested in the missing principle case, mostly because he believed it to be a hoax. It must be just a welcome prank for the new students to give them a taste of what real mystery is like. Nevertheless he revised some last year lessons. What was it observe, locate target estimate distance and then take action or did he miss any steps? He was doing good on the observing part but locating Anna seemed to be causing him a problem and who could even concentrate with all this yelling.

Ashton turned towards the source of the unpleasant noise and discovered it was coming from Nicholas. That guy was always so very loud and seemed to love making a fool of himslef. He was apparently arguing with a black haired girl. She had her back turned towards Ashton so he couldn't get a good look at her face. Well, he might as well be polite and go say hello to Nicholas. At the girl's mention of his own name he stopped for a moment. Was this the mysterious Iridian he was to work with. He came closer to the pair and started speaking in a courteous manner. "And, with all due respect, I sincerely hope you're not this strident all the time."

Mornings. . . Catrice wasn't overly fond of those. Were they bad? No, of course not. They were the start to the day, how could they possibly be bad? Mornings were like the first pages of a book, they were always the introduction, the beginning of a bigger story.
Unfortunately, today's introduction was going rather badly.

"Why aren't you downstairs yet?" Her mother called from the kitchen, reminding Catrice that yes, she was running late. She had been supposed to be on her way to the Sherlockian Academy thirteen minutes ago, at 6:40. It was 6:53 at the moment, and she didn't know when the bus would arrive. Heck, it had probably already passed.
"One more minute!" The girl replied, pulling her socks around her feet in a hurry.
". . . Fifty-nine, fifty-eight, fifty-seven. . ." Catrice could hear her mother counting from down the stairs, the words only adding to her already existing frustration.
"Stop it!"
"Fifty-three, ten seconds off! Forty-three, forty-two, for-"
"Mum!"
Catrice snapped, bolting down the steps so fast she nearly tripped. Shooting a scowl at the grinning woman beside her now, the girl rolled her eyes as she snatched her bag from her mother's hands and rushed out the door.

***
The distance from her house to the academy was a bit far but not overly long on Monday, May 25th. The impressive time was due to Catrice running half the way and catching a ride on the bus for what was remaining.
She arrived at the school gates just a little bit over the time she had wanted, and quickly tried to navigate this 'partner' she had been set up with. What was his name? Nicholas Pa... Pal? Palmer? Whoever he was, Catrice only knew his name from a list she had been given through the mail. Due to never being an actual student at the Sherlockian Academy a day in her life, she had no clue who this Nicholas was, but she was sure she would hardly even need him.
Still, finding him may be a good idea.

"I'm looking for Nicholas Palmer, have you seen him?" Catrice asked as a rather cheerful looking girl skipped up to her, probably to say hello. The girl nodded, "Yeah!"
Catrice blinked, "Can you tell me where he is?"
"Oh! He's right over there!" The girl said happily, pointing through the growing crowd, "I'm guessing you're here for the case, huh? Have fun, working with Nick!" She giggled, almost knowingly, as she skipped away.
Shrugging, Catrice headed in the direction of which the girl had directed.

The crowd had grown big now and the girl quickly lost her way. Annoyed with herself, she turned to the first person she saw and asked for directions again,
"I'm looking for Nicholas Palmer, do you know where he is?" she asked, speaking to a blond haired boy who was caught up in a conversation with two others.

"Hello there.."

Image
Nick almost dropped his smile at her remark, almost. An expression of heartbreak came across his face for a moment, but just a moment! It'd take a lot more than that to break is character. Nicholas quickly bounced back with a cheery smile, and a delighted laugh. He acted as if he had never heard anything funnier.

"Oh but my darling-" He froze in mid-sentence, interrupted. Just before he was going to go off about how better he was again, some little white-haired weirdo came by and stole the show from him! The nerve, he thought to himself. He listed to the boy's remark, while crossing his arms. At the end, his eyes widened with curiosity and held an expression of pure honesty. "Gosh! Don't get so clever, she's not always like that..." He expressed with crossed-hand motions, as if trying to keep too bulls from ramming into each other. "...Just to people who like fun, though. But hopefully, you're just as colorless as your hair... You two should get along fine! Anyways, I guess I should be going now. It looks like the assistants are arriving. Tootles! " He responded quick and hurried, turning back towards Anna and giving her a small bow.

"I'm looking for Nicholas Palmer, do you know where he is?"

Nick was a little relieved and surprised that he didn't have to go off trying to find his assistant now, but by turning his head towards the woman, that relief ended in a flinch. He looked actually a little puzzled to see her. Well, not exactly puzzled, more as if... upset, and dumbfounded. He turned around to her fully, and gave a small huff. "What? You come to an investigation and don't even know your partners face!? How foolish you are.." Nicholas rolled his eyes and sighed, crossing his arms once again. He let a moment pass for that to sink in. "..Oh well. I have a special question for you, Catty!" he smirked, and resumed his cheery attitude. "I'm thinking of a number between 1 and 100.. Give me the numba that first comes to your mind, and I'll make the real judgements on ya then!"

Anna paid no attention to the blond boys reaction to her words. It was cruel of her to say such things, but by now the boy had to of been used to it. Why he even decided to start talking to her at the beginning of the year, then continuing to even after her signs of not wanting to socialize, is still a mystery to her, and not one worth solving.

Nick began to speak again, giving Anna the cue that it was now time to ignore him and walk away without another word. However before she even had the time to turn around she heard the voice of a young man behind her.

"And, with all due respect, I sincerely hope you're not
this strident all the time."

She turned so she could match the voice with a face, blinking with only a slight hint of curiosity in her eyes. It barely took her a second to figure out that this was Ashton, the boy selected to be her assistant on the new case. It wasn't that that difficult really. One could even say it was absolutely obvious, that 'one' being Anna. As for the boys bold introduction... She gave him a small smile.

"Ah, straight-forward. I like that."

"Gosh! Don't get so clever, she's not always like that... Just to people who like fun, though. But hopefully, you're just as colorless as your hair... You two should get along fine! Anyways, I guess I should be going now.
It looks like the assistants are arriving. Tootles!"

Anna had turned slightly so she could stare at Nick with an irritated expression as he spoke. When he excused himself she let out a relieved sigh and turned her attention back to the white-haired boy, her small, polite smile returning to her lips.

"You must be Ashton Brooks. Please, call me Anna. It's a pleasure to meet you.", she said with a friendly tone, holding out her right hand to shake his.

Ashton mentally cursed himself for speaking so bluntly. The sentence sounded lass offensive in his head, he hoped it didn't offend the girl he will be working with. His doubts soon disappeared as Anna spoke. "Ah, straight-forward. I like that." She even smiled. It had seemed that the greeting had upset Nicholas far more than it did Anna.

"Gosh! Don't get so clever, she's not always like that... Just to people who like fun, though. But hopefully, you're just as colourless as your hair... You two should get along fine! Anyways, I guess I should be going now. It looks like the assistants are arriving. Tootles!" The boy's rant surprised him considering the fact that his potentially insulting comment was directed at Iridan who he obviously wasn't the best of friends with. The joke, was that part about his hair even a joke or an insult, well whatever it was, it went over his head. Ashton crooked his head a bit to the left and watched the blond boy leave.

He was now alone with Anna, well not really alone since they were standing in the middle of a courtyard filled with their fellow students, but their attention was directed only at one another. "You must be Ashton Brooks. Please, call me Anna. It's a pleasure to meet you." She held out her hand for a shake but instead of doing so Ashton lifted her hand and kissed it. It wasn't anything special, just what he was thought a gentleman is supposed to do. "The pleasure is all mine, Anna." He said with a genuine smile.

"I think the welcome ceremony for the first years is about to start." He spoke after a short break. "Don't you think we should go, the vice principal might talk more about the disappearance. With at least 300 other students as competition we should use every opportunity to find evidence." By the discussion Anna had with Nick Ashton assumed she would be more than keen on solving the case. His words were spoken with the best intentions but they lacked honesty. He would be happier if the principal just popped up from behind the podium and said it was all a joke but that was highly unlikely.

It's not like he's not going to try it's just that he wasn't as excited about the mystery as the rest of his schoolmates. Ashton is rather good at finding missing things. How much different can it be with finding people?

Ashton took a step in the general direction of the auditorium the ceremony was going to be held in and waited for Iridian to follow or take the lead he was fine with either.

That....was unexpected.

Instead of returning her gesture for a handshake the white-haired boy instead
took her hand and kissed the top of it. This instantly made Anna feel a little uncomfortable. Not that she didn't appreciate it, she'd just never met anyone who'd even think about doing such a thing. Frankly, none of the boys at her school were brave enough to give it a try, or dumb enough. This boy was a strange one...

"The pleasure is all mine, Anna."

She pulled her hand away and crossed her arms over her chest before turning her eyes away from his smile as he straightened up from leaning to kiss her hand. She wasn't about to admit that she was a little embarrassed, but she was. However Anna was a professional at keeping up her composure, so only someone who was extremely perceptive would possibly be able to spot her discomfort and for some reason she found it a bit hard to believe that Asthon was that good.

"I think the welcome ceremony for the first years is about to start. Don't you think we should go, the vice principal might talk more about the disappearance. With at least 300 other students as competition we should use every opportunity to find evidence."

She moved her eyes back onto him and replied, somewhat apathetically. "Personally I don't really see this as a competition. To be honest missing person cases come off as rather dull to me. The only reason I chose to participate in this one...well I have my own reasons." She gave him a slight smile, letting her arms fall to her sides as she passed him by. "But if this is going to be a competition, I'd rather be the first to cross the finish line."

She couldn't go letting that blonde idiot pass her up, at least. Even if she wasn't entirely interested in this case, she still had her pride as a detective.

The two of them made their way to the auditorium. At first Anna had started in front of Ashton, figuring that she should lead since he probably didn't know his way around the school. As they approached the entrance though, she fell back to walk beside him, however keeping at least a foot of space between them. Anna wasn't really fond of being close to other, both mentally and physically. When they entered, Anna didn't bother sitting down and instead found a mostly clear space along the back wall to lean against. Asthon could sit down if he wanted to, she didn't really care. Her mind was currently on other matters.
