Long post, sorry about that.
When she finally got home, things were a little tense. Alan made a point to check on her every few minutes, Allison would constantly come in Elisa's room to make sure Jess "was behaving," and her parents were on the phone talking about what a klutz their daughter was. As uncomfortable as it was, she did her best not to think about it. After all, Beck would be picking her up soon and she might actually have a good day.
Elisa wasn't really the type of girl to care what she wore, or at least it had been so long since she had dressed for a boy that she couldn't remember being that type of girl. Today, though, her bedroom looked like it had been hit by a hurricane of clothes. Jeans, dresses, skirts, shirts, and everything in between were thrown across all the corners of her room. She had tried things on, taken them off, and tried them on again. Elisa was frustrated, staring at her now nearly empty closet with her hair in a bun wearing nothing but pajama pants and a bra. Jessa, on the flip side, was having a grand time trying on her "big sister's" clothes and pretending she was a princess.
"Ellie, look!" Jess said with a giant smiled plastered on her face as she wore one of Elisa's more formal gowns, one she would usually where to a charity event of her mom's. The dress swallowed the toddler, in a mess of black fabric. Elisa laughed and shook her head.
"Come help sister get dressed," Elisa said with a smile. Jess immediately balled up the rest of the dress and ran over to her on wobbly legs.
"Where are you going?" Jess asked, her eyes wide with curiosity.
"Out with a boy," She answered. Jess's already big eyes nearly popped out of her head and she sucked in a dramatic breath. Everything Jessa Grace did was overly dramatic and absolutely adorable.
"Does he make you happy?" The little girl continued to question. "You're always sad." As young as she was, you could tell she was wondering if what she had just said would make Elisa upset and just like Elisa did, she chewed on her bottom lip nervously.
"Yes, he makes me happy but so do you. So help me pick a dress and you can take all the credit if he says I look pretty," She said with a smile, motioning to the remaining dresses hanging in the closet. There wasn't much, but she was sure one of those dresses had to be perfect. They were casual and flirty, but wouldn't make it look like she was going to a club. Jessa motioned to a white one that was short, with a brown belt around the waist. Elisa wasn't entirely sure if she was comfortable wearing it, or if she was comfortable wearing a dress at all. The last few years she had been a converse and jeans kind of girl, only getting dressed up if she absolutely had to. "Alright, I'll wear that one, go wait outside." She said with a small smile. Jessa responded with a loud okay, and ran out of the room - still wearing Elisa's black dress.
It only took her a few moments to put the dress on and take her hair down so that it fell over her shoulders. She stared at herself for a long time, realizing that she needed to put a sweater on to cover her bandaged arm. Today she was going out with Beck. Maybe it was a date, maybe it wasn't, sure wasn't sure if they had ever really decided on that, but even so...Something felt different. She had kissed him and later he kissed her.
"Now we are even..." He had told her, and she blushed at the memory. She didn't know how the day would end, but she hoped for the best. She put on a pair of flats and then made her way out of her bedroom and into the living room where Jess was arguing with Allison about whether or not she should take the dress off.
"No! It's mine," The three year old pouted, while her nanny tried to take it off of her.
"Jessa, that dress if very, very expensive. I don't think Elisa would appreciate it if you hurt it." Allison said firmly. The exchange went on for a few more minutes before Elisa finally cleared her throat to get their attention.
"Sorry, Miss Grace. Jessa took one of your dresses," The older woman frowned.
"It's okay. I let her."
"Oh...Okay. How are you then?"
"I'm just fine."
They stared at each other in an awkward silence for a few more moments before Allison decided to leave the room. Jess sat watching them with a puzzled expression on her face, like she couldn't figure out why there was so much tension, but once her nanny left a smile promptly returned to her cheery face. "Elisa you look like a princess! Just like me!" Jess exclaimed, pointing her dress with one hand and a plastic tiara she had found in a bucket of toys. Elisa smiled. Beck was supposed to be there soon and she really wanted to look good for him.
