Introduction
Setting: The setting is in Marin, the capital of the Kingdom of Akadia. To the south of the city are the docks and a beach which on the outskirts in the other directions there are flatlands with fields and woods. A couple years ago, a paved road to the city was completed for a more comfortable ride with steampowered vehicles. The architecture of the buildings are similar to German-Austrian imperial era buildings (see Vienna for example) and the roads in town are either cobblestone or paved. The castle sits on the top of a hill overlooking the city. The general era is steampunk type second half of 1800s. While horse drawn carriages exist, also steampowered vehicles exist. Most current horseless vehicles are slower than horse carriages. There are also steampunk type prosthetics and some factory automation.
Most nobles will find vacancies in the Schlassheem Hotel (I am using Luxembourgish for place names ^^) but otherwise will stay in personal villas during their stay.
Please be aware that some social rules of old times still exist in this rp such as: While bikinis exist, within noble families bikinis are considered a taboo at the beach and seen as at least adventurous up to dishonorable, where bathing suits are more desireable for women within noble families. Or that gossip may arise if a noble woman wears pants or too short of a skirt. It is up to you if your noble family is more liberal on that topic. But I am just saying to keep it a bit more realistic.

The Story So Far... Write a Post » as written by 4 authors

"Yes madame!" The four men and one woman shouted. These were only the five responsible for the prince in the capital alone. When outside of the capital, Aurore quadrupled the number and would never leave the princes vicinity.
"At ease!" Aurore said. The five in their blue uniforms sighed. And began to talk to each other. "Why did I apply for this position anyways?" The female guard said to the others. Then one of the male guards said: "That's what we are all asking ourselves. Our precessors made it look so easy."
Meanwhile Aurore headed out of the palace down to the market. It was busy and many seemed to be anticipating the arrival of the nobles. Some of the merchants bowed in respect to Aurore. Aurore though disliked being treated like a noble and would have been satisfied with smiles instead. While walking, someone covered her eyes and said: "What's a fine lady like you doing along on the streets." Aurore spun around and twisted the stranger's arm.
"Hey! Cut it out!" Janosz said suppressing a giggle. Aurore then was surprised it was him and let go: "Oh, it's you. You came in a bit early cousin." "I am still devastated over your refusal to go out with me." Janosz said putting his arm around Aurore. Aurore then replied: "You are too childish. Grow up and maybe I'll accept."
Janosz chuckled and said: "Oh! I get it. You are after HIM. Maybe I should treat Darann more like a rival then." "By the way, why are you alway wearing traditional Kamaran hunting garments. Oh that's right! You are poor! Let's get you something more for your status but nothing too extravagant. That leather vest and pants might become the talk of the day and the ladies might avoid someone who looks like a Kamaran commoner and smells like ale and oil." Aurore said. She then took his hand and pulled him towards where the tailors were located.
After ordering her guards to stay with the carriage, Aleksa ventured inside the palace alone. It was certainly something of a risky move, but entering with her guards might have given the impression that she did not place her trust in the security provided by Prince Darann. And of course, it was vital that she made a good first impression.
For the time being, Aleksa simply wandered down one of the corridors at a leisurely pace, taking care not to stray too far from the entrance hall. The Akadian palace had looked quite bigger than her own from the outside, and she wasn't too keen on going further without some proper means of navigation...
There’s nothing like the endless drumming of horses’ hooves on the ground and the repeated bouncing of a carriage in movement to give someone an enormous headache. Such was the fate of the princess Noelani, who, at this very moment, was sprawled out in a most unladylike fashion in the back of her royal carriage. Laying on her back taking up an entire bench, one arm swung over her eyes to block out the sun that was shining through the window, one knee pulled up and the other leg hanging down off of the bench – all of that couple with her piteous moaning might have made one feel bad for her. However, the two others in the carriage had been privy to this exact scene for many days, and repetition had worn away their sympathy.
Since third day of their caravan’s venture, when the adrenaline of adventure had fallen away and the stark reality of spending fifteen hours each day in the cramped, hot, and unstable carriage for several weeks had fully set in, the Princess had been anything but endearing. As it was, the princess’s two guardians were instead trying their damndest to resist their own headaches and frustrations. After all of the days they’d already spent travelling in their unfortunately long journey, the capital of Akadia would finally come into sight this afternoon. As it was, the strange countryside was already whittling past, should any of the carriage’s riders had any desire to look outside the curtained windows.
But, they didn’t.
Instead, the uncompanionable silence persisted for the next hour and a half until the vehicle reached the interior of Marin, broken only by Noel’s groans and whimpers. When the carriage had finally come to a blessed stop, the riders slowly and arduously climbed from their seats, opened the door, and were the first individuals from Orosu to set foot on Akadian soil. The two retainers looked back in the carriage and saw Noel rise from her position and blearily blink away her disgruntlement. With a childish sniffle and pout, she held her hands out one of the men, he whose hair was white and who had wrappings covering his throat and mouth. With the air of a father being bothered by his daughter, the man took the princess’s hand and helped her descend from the carriage significantly more modestly and gracefully than she could have herself with her frumpled kimono.
Once she had touched the ground, she smiled sweetly and, standing on her very tipy-toes and pulling his head down a bit with a hand on his shoulder, Noel pecked the man on the cheek. “Thank you, Rai; you’re always such a gentleman,” she said teasingly, to which the man, “Rai”, shrugged and scratched the back of his head. The third companion snorted, tossing his long, black hair over his shoulder, and turned to start unloading the back of the carriage. Raising his voice so the two would hear him, he said, “Right, and always such a noblewoman too. Now, get your ass over here, Raitoningu, and help me carry the,” here he paused to add in a double dose of snark, “princess’s bags.”
“You don’t have to be jealous just because I didn’t ask you to help me, Sandaa!” Noelani stuck her tongue out at her grumpy retainer as she returned his snark full force. Raitoningu chuckled at the two, but moved to help regardless. Soon enough, the two men were laden down with several bags and trunks, the carriage was dismissed to return to Orosu on its own time, and the trio was on its way to the palace.
That was…if they could find it. Trusting their princess to find the palace, which had been directly north from their position, the two men followed Noelani until she made a tiny ‘oops’ sound. Already ticked by the entire event, Sandaa immediately latched onto the noise and growled out “What do you mean, oops!? You didn’t – couldn’t! – have gotten us lost, could you?” The two men heard a groan as Noelani turned around and looked at them both with embarrassed eyes, hands clutching at her hair, and said in a meek voice, “Umm, maybe? I thought that it would be a shortcut if we went left and then straight. But, I think I forgot to stop going left about ten minutes back that way.”
Sandaa looked like he would have picked Noelani up by her shoulders and shaken her like a rag doll if he wasn’t borne down with all of the bags. “WHAT? YOU. FORGOT. TO. TURN?” Rai set down one bag and, using his now free hand, grabbed the collar of Sandaa’s uniform to prevent him from charging at his mistress. “Yes, yes, I forgot to turn! Shut up! I’m not used to the buildings being so big that they prevent me from seeing the streets. I mean, I don’t know how I’m supposed to find my way around when I can’t even see where I’m going,” Noel complained, stamping her feet a bit at Sandaa’s criticism.
“Just. Get. Directions,” Sandaa seethed between clenched teeth while Rai gently patted him on the head, trying to calm him. The white haired man cast a gentle, placating look at Noel and said with a bit of amusement, “Find someone to tell us how to get to the castle, Madam Noel. I’ll keep this one here for now. We’ll be waiting.” Thanking her levelheaded companion and brushing off more venomous verbal attacks on her intellect by her less so companion, Noel tottered off, looking for someone who looked like they knew what they were doing. Because goodness knows she surely didn’t.
Finally unable to stand being in his room any longer, Darann checked himself in the mirror before carefully opening his door a crack. He had managed to escape the watchful eyes of his guards the day before, and he hoped to do so today. As much as he appreciated the concern, all he really wanted now was a relaxing swim. Making sure the coast was clear, he scurried out in haste, barely keeping himself out of sight. Keeping to the sides and utilizing servant's routes among the castle, prince Darann made his way down towards the first floor, having to stop only once and wait for a guard to pass around the corner. For a few brief seconds he was sure he'd be seen and intercepted, but thankfully, he was just still enough and careful enough to evade detection. Almost out!
Relaxing a bit more as he stepped into a corridor leading towards the gardens, the prince froze upon seeing a young woman not fifteen feet ahead. While he was glad she wasn't one of the guard, he hadn't expected to run into anyone on the way outside. Normally everyone was busy in the morning, and this was heading away from the entrance hall, not towards it. But looking her over again, Darann realized the woman was not from his castle at all. Were his guests here already?! No one had announced such a thing. The prince felt an unusual uncertainty. He wasn't against guests, and he was the one with this idea after all. But this was happening a lot faster than anticipated, and he had yet to ready himself to greet his visitors.
Darann's thoughts ceased to sink into reluctant acceptance as the arm of said woman caught his eye. It almost seemed as if from her elbow downwards, the appendage was made of metal. A Prosthetic? If so, it was the most well-crafted and elegant looking prosthetic he'd ever seen, for what few that was. Without realizing it, the prince took a step closer, eyes drawn to the arm in facination.
Aurore paid for Janosz' clothes and they headed for the castle. Once they made it to the entrance hall, Aurore noticed Darann standing close to an unknown woman. It sort of angered her, especially because the royal guard was no where to be seen. "Get in position!" Aurore yelled. The royal guard came hurrying to Aurore. "You have failed me once again! I will have the maids take a day off and you guys will be cleaning this place up from top to bottom! You understand me?!" Aurore continued. "Now get going! You know where the cleaning utensil and the servant uniforms are!"
Once the royal guard had left, Aurore calmed down and headed over to the prince and the guest. Janosz followed. "Darann. You shouldn't be wandering off. You should make sure that at least one guard stays nearby while you wander about, even within the palace. What if someone was to assault you?" Aurore then turned to the guest and said: "Pardon me. I should properly introduce myself. I am Aurore Lindner, head of the royal guard and leader of the Akadian Kamaran. This here is my cousin Janosz, duke of the Hubnerian Duchy."
Janosz bowed to the woman and said: "I am Duke Janosz Hubner. I am delighted by your presence, my lady." He suddenly felt Aurore elbow in his side. "You do not need to overdo it." Aurore whispered. That gave Janosz an idea. "Lady Lindner here was my first love. It is hard to keep my mind off of her, even to this day. She could be a formidable candidate for queen with her bravery, skill and beauty." Janosz said. It made Aurore blush. She then whispered to Janosz: "I will beat the living crap out of you when the prince and the guests aren't present." This statement made Janosz sweat a little.
"Greetings, your highness. I am Aleksa Kinova. I shall be attending the royal ball," she told him, although there was no reply. "You know, the Sovereign of Austron? The Silver Hand?" Eventually it dawned on her that his attention was focused almost entirely on her mechanical arm.
"You wish to take a closer look? Perhaps in good time, after the other guests -" Aleksa's words were cut short by the sound of a woman yelling at the guards evidently under her command for allowing the prince to wander out of their sight. Once she had dismissed them, the woman then made her way over to Aleksa and Darann, and after scolding the prince she introduced not only herself, but also a relative of hers who appeared to be of a somewhat lesser status among the other nobles.
"Her Serene Highness Aleksa Kinova, Sovereign Ruler of the Nation of Austron," she said to them in a more businesslike manner. "I am, of course, here to attend the royal ball and negotiate any deals with the Prince." Keeping her expression impassive, Aleksa carefully observed the pair, waiting to see how they would react.
Composing himself, Darann began to offer his hand to take her own and grace it with a kiss, when the head of his guard approached him, scolding him once more. It took considerable willpower not to sigh, the prince straightening and turning slightly to face the two. Aurore's shouts to the guiards made Darann feel a tad guilty for sneaking out, and thus, getting them into trouble. But surely his captain was being over-cautious?
"Not entirely thier fault. I do appreciate your concern Aurore, but surely I am allowed some freedom in my own home? I simply needed a swim." Darann explained, rubbing the back of his head in what could be a sheepish manner. He allowed for introductions to be passed, and once the others spoke, he bowed automatically, hand over his chest as he took his turn.
"As I see you've found out, I am his royal highness Darann Kieffer. Forgive my rudeness highness, I meant no disrespect." he said, holding out a hand to take Aleska's and place a gentle, chaste kiss upon her knuckles.
Being sure to greet any servant she passed as well as her father and her mother, Lea sat down and waited patiently to be served, placing her napkin in her lap. Thankfully her food arrived quickly, and soon she was able to soothe her hunger. Somehow, she managed to not spill a single crumb upon her lap, a good omen as far as she was concerned.
Once finished, she thanked her servants and excitedly bid her household farewell for now, accepting a parasol from a maid as she headed for the door.
Outside, Lea lifted her skirts just enough to keep them clean as she decended her steps, heading towards the simple carriage provided for her to head into the city and towards the palace, her bags already loaded. While Lea could technically just walk into the center of the capitol, she didn't want to bother with having servants carrying things for her, nor did she fancy walking that far in nice shoes. Her house was towards the outer edges of the city, and she decided it would simply be easier to ride there. Within minutes, she was on her way to the palace, her heart filled with anticipation.
The ride was uneventful, and Lea leaned her chin on her hand, gazing idly out the window. She and her coachman were only about a third of the way to the palace when she saw someone she didn't recognize. More importantly, a woman dressed very differently than anyone she'd ever seen before. "Stop the carriage sire!" she instructed, getting out as soon as the door was opened for her.
"I beg your pardon miss!" Lea called out, approaching the rather charming looking young woman of fair complexion and golden hair. But those clothes! They were beautiful, surely, but unlike any dresses she had seen or worn. Now that she looked closer, the exotic young woman seemed to look rather lost and confused. "Are you by any chance lost?"

"I'm afraid I must respectfully decline," she told Aurore. "I have only just got here after several days of travel and I doubt that going on a hunting party would be in my best interests right now. Perhaps another time?"
"You know I myself have no issue with talking freely with you. However, mind yourselves, we have guests, and you will address them as is proper. Surely you two know better to show our visitors the proper respect. Her highness herself should decide if you have earned the right to adress her so informally." Darann scolded with a slight frown, but otherwise didn't raise his voice or make a fuss. Besides, he knew they meant well, even if it did mean they were skimming and ignoring common manners.
"Stop teasing Aurore Janosz, you know I'm not a fan of idle gossip, but of science and knowledge, facts. Besides, my bed is of no concern to you, now is it?" he remarked, raising a hand to casually whack the duke upside his head, but he refrained, realizing that was a bit childish nowdays. Besides, that would look bad in front of his guests.
Turning back to his guest, Darann went back to his charming smile, relaxing his facial features once more. "You'll have to forgive me and my companions. I suspect they are merely excited is all."
Janosz chuckled and said: "Well I would really say that it is gossip. You don't recognize the way she looks at you or about how much she cares for you? I have ask her many times but she refuses me simply because we are cousins. Talk to her some time about it. She might be too shy to admit it but if she blushes, then you know that she has a thing for you." He said this to Darann outside of Aurore's audible range. "Just remember that while she is your protector, you might not realize what you are to her."
"You have my thanks, Miss Lindner. Should I wish to know more than I shall certainly enquire further," she told the captain. Truth be told, Aleksa had been somewhat disappointed at the arrival of Aurore and Janosz, as she had momentarily enjoyed the thought of getting the chance to talk to Darann alone before the ball started. After all, it would have been nice to get to know the person she would possibly end up marrying. However, overhearing a certain something the prince had said to the duke caught Aleksa's attention.
"A man of science, your highness? Perhaps you and I are both of the same mind. If you are willing, perhaps you could show me your laboratory at some point? However, if you are currently too busy then I shall not hold it against you. I could always content myself with a stroll in the palace gardens until the other guests arrive."

"Janosz here is also a doctor and a prodigy with mechanics. He saved me from dying from an assassination attempt by removing a bullet from my head and reinforcing it with a metal plate. He himself is modified to an extent and he can maintenance any artificial arms and legs in a jiffy as well as make better ones." Aurore said with the sole attempt to get Janosz off her and eliminate rivals.
Not only was it difficult to see where you were going in a city, it was also difficult to find a kind stranger who was willing to show you the way. Noel wasn’t used to being around so many people and buildings and things! It was just too much for her to handle, leading to her losing her way and incurring the horrible wrath of her attendant, who should be subservient to her, and all in all spoiling her morning! She spent the better portion of ten minutes scurrying around the streets like frantic hen trying to find someone who looked both knowledgeable and kind. However, it’s been said that it takes like to recognize like. And, frankly, Noel wasn’t knowledgeable herself, so how was she supposed to know what that looked like in a person?
The result was that the poor girl began asking everyone she passed for directions, becoming more and more distraught with each refusal or brusque denial. By the time fortune had smiled upon her, she was already close to tears, her little nose sniffling consistently. Yet, not even the most piteous view of the tiny woman in near-hysterics stirred any sympathy in those around her. That was, until a feminine voice stopped Noel just before she fell to her knees and clutched desperately at a man who was turning to leave when she told him she didn’t have any local money to tip him if he did help.
Blinking back moisture from her eyes and closing her mouth to cut off her pleads, Noelani turned her head to look back towards the street, astonished to see a rather fancy looking woman – in the Akadian style, of course; nothing like the fashion of her homeland – looking at her. For a ludicrous moment, Noelani dumbly lifted a finger to point at herself as if asking “You meant me?” Just a second later, as recognition hit her upside the head like the slap that she desperately deserved, Noel leaped from her spot and ran, beaming towards the woman. Momentarily forgetting that she was a princess, in a foreign land full of different customs no less, Noel threw her arms out and wrapped them around the woman’s shoulders in a tight hug, having to stand on her tippy toes to balance, albeit quite precariously.
“Hi, hi, hi,” she exclaimed, looking up at the woman with radiant happiness. “Thank you so much for acknowledging me! Oh, just thank goodness, you’re so kind and wonderful and…” Her enthusiasm running ahead of her, Noel couldn’t help but fall into her habit of gushing compliments and nonsensical niceties. When her exuberance died down slightly, Noel checked herself and released the woman’s shoulders, falling back down on her heels. “Oh, I’m sorry about that…I just got so excited, see; everyone’s either ignored me or wanted money to show me to the palace, and I wasn’t quite able to get any exchanged before we left, so I’m just really lost and confused and you showing up was just so nice and wonderful and-”
Noel imagined that she could almost feel Sandaa’s intensifying shouting from where she was.
Reaching up to scratch the back of her head as she chuckled lamely, Noel caught herself and said, much more calmly, “And, um, yes. I am actually rather lost. My retainers sent me to find someone to give us directions, and, well…here I am?” She shrugged her shoulders lightly and gave a hollow, embarrassed laugh.
Cocking her head to the side a little, Noel shyly gave the woman a half bow as pink colored her cheeks. “I’m sorry, I’ve forgotten my manners. I’m Noelani L’Ariettre; and what might the name of my savior be?”
Perking up considerably as the subject turned to science, he began to beam in excitement as his guest expressed what seemed like genuine interest in the topic. Even better, she wanted to see his study...his workshop! Grinning like a child in their favorite candy shop, he returned his attention to the visiting princess.
"Well, this certainly is a pleasant surprise. Of course, I'm more than willing to show off my study to anyone who wishes to see it. I'll confess, I do get quite immerssed in my hobby at times."
Aleksa followed Darann down a few more corridors, leaving the duke and the guard to their respective duties. Despite her reserved outward appearance, the ruler of Austron was quite excited to see this man's workshop, and by the time they had reached the door her excitement was starting to show itself. Once inside, she was able to get a good look at Darann's private study. Although the prince did not have the same level of resources that Aleksa had at her disposal, it was still very neatly organised. Much to her delight, there were even one or two books that had been published by some of Austron's more renowned artificers.
"A somewhat limited workspace, yet... still very capable of fulfilling its purpose," she observed, a smile quite visible on her face. "I certainly look forward to getting to know you better during my stay in Marin."
